Question from Andy Yinger (02:03, 30 January 2025)
[edit]Hi.this is all overwhelming! I simply wanted to add information about my deceased father who was a coach at central mo state college in the 50s. I found the info on central mo coaches and just wanted to add him. I have researched and have citations but I started this in 2000 for his obituary but do not have sources on his win loss records. Can I submit info and some one write it since I have. Coi --Andy Yinger (talk) 02:03, 30 January 2025 (UTC)
- Andy Yinger Good day. I believe you edited the information above prior to your registration on Wikipedia. In order to evaluate the matter, please provide the name of the article in question. Regards. Cassiopeia talk 05:13, 30 January 2025 (UTC)
- Hi the category is Central Missouri Mules football coaches. I want to add my deceased dad to it as he was head coach there in the 50s. I am sure I can write and use citations but the pages have charts for information, win loss records. How is that completed? And may I quote the college media guides, although I know no way an editor access them. I do not recall the sources I used to compile the win loss records, as we did not use the inhis obituary. Please advise.Andy Yinger (talk) 18:42, 30 January 2025 (UTC)

- Andy Yinger, OK, now I understand what you meant. Your father (the subject) needs to have an article in the main space of Wikipedia in order to add his name in the category. To have a article/page in Wikipedia, the subject needs to meet the WP:GNG guidelines. That means the subject needs to have significant, from independent, reliable (secondary sources) sources, whereby the sources talk about the subject in length and dept an not passing mentioned. So you father is not currently have a page in Wikipedia, so his name can not be included in the said category. Regards. Cassiopeia talk 01:00, 1 February 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks but there is still misunderstanding. I want to create an article to include my deceased dad who was a central Missouri state football coach. The responses from Wikipedia never stated there had to be a stand alone article for him to be listed, but the creation of one, to be placed in the said category. I note that several of the men listed as coaches in that category were at central as assistants at one time. My dad coached football at central for ten years and later became an administrator at the college. This category to date contains biographical information on these men. Thank you Andy Yinger (talk) 02:20, 1 February 2025 (UTC)
- Andy Yinger If you put your father info in, that means you have a WP:COI (conflict of interest), which means you have to WP:DECLARE you COI on your user page and catogory page. Secondly, if you place a subject which does not have their page on the cat, then the info place will be removed. Cassiopeia talk 02:28, 1 February 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks trying to comply with your directive. I put Coi on user page but can not figure out how to use template thing. However, I do not understand the sentence, “Secondly, if you place a subject which does not have their page on the cat, then the info place will be removed?” I am struggling! New tech! I have a MA in American history and have not written a documented manuscript in 35 years yet alone get used to this application. Thanks for your assistance in advance. Andy Yinger (talk) 00:16, 2 February 2025 (UTC)
- Andy Yinger Good day. Cat =catogory. We occasionally utilize abbreviations, and I apologize for not considering that you are new to Wikipedia. Please refer to the explanation of categories provided below.
- Every Wikipedia page should be assigned to at least one category. Each categorized page ought to be placed in the most specific categories to which it logically pertains. Once a category is assigned to an article (located at the bottom of the article), it will automatically appear in the Category space. If a subject does not have a corresponding page or article in the main namespace of Wikipedia, then no categories can be assigned. For instance, the page for Jack Della Maddalena, an Australian mixed martial artist, includes the category in the categories section at the bottom of the article. By clicking on "Australian male mixed martial artists" under the "Catogories section", it will brings you to where you can find his name under the "D" section. Therefore, we can just add a subjects who does not have an article in Wikipedia to the "Categories" pages.
- I am able to add the Conflict of Interest (COI) declaration to your user page if you would like. Please inform me if you would like me to proceed with this action. Have a wonderful weekend. Cassiopeia talk 03:57, 2 February 2025 (UTC)

Hello! I was interested in looking at the page for the Gulf of Mexico just to observe the chaos in the Talk page (I have nothing to add to that debate), and while perusing the article, a line caught my eye under the Geology section listing life forms which subsist in a particular brine pool within the gulf. I'm biologically inclined, and the inclusion of bacteria on that list but not archaea seemed off to me. I went down a little rabbit hole and ended up emailing Erik Cordes, the researcher in charge of the expedition - he suggested the term "microbes" over "bacteria," and confirmed that there are lots of archaea in the pool. I can provide proof of this correspondence if needed - the main thing is that I need help suggesting the change! I'm new to this and any help would be amazing. --Halterian (talk) 04:03, 31 January 2025 (UTC)
- Halterian Good day. Firstly, any added or modified content must be substantiated by an independent and reliable published source, specifically a secondary source, such as those from major newspapers or books, in accordance with Wikipedia's core policy of verification. Sources derived from social media, organizational websites, educational institutions, government entities, foundations, and private companies are generally deemed unreliable and/or not independent. Given that Erik Cordes is the principal researcher overseeing the expedition, the associated source is classified as a primary source rather than an independent one. Furthermore, the emailed source does not qualify as a "published" source. I identified two entries related to "bacteria" in the Gulf of Mexico and both sources state "bacteria" - see SOURCE 1, and SOURCE 2.
