Use of the word Pickaninny / Piccaninny in Rolf Harris's "Carra Barra Wirra Canna"
You removed my edit from the Pickaninny page for failing to cite a source for a lyric from a song. The lyrics to the song are widely available from any of dozens of lyrics sites, or from listening to the song, which is possible on Youtube and other sources. The lyric is easily verifiable... as even a google search for the lyrics brings up the text from Lyricfind.com
Lyrics There's a lake in south Australia, little lake with lovely name And the story woven round it, from the piccaninnies came Every night the native mothers croon this lovely lullaby, Croon across the moonlit waters, to the star up in the sky Carra Barra Wirra Canna, little star upon the lake Guide me through the hours of darkness, keep me safely till I wake Piccaninnies' heads are nodding, drowsy crooning fills the air. Little eyes at last are closing, And the boat of dreams is there. Guide my boat across the waters, Cross the waters still and deep, Light me with your little candle, safely to the land of sleep Carra Barra Wirra Canna, little star upon the lake Guide me through the hours of darkness, keep me safely till I wake Source: LyricFind Songwriters: Marva Cogan Carra Barra Wirra Canna lyrics © Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLC
But here's a few more links. https://genius.com/Rolf-harris-carra-barra-wirra-canna-lyrics https://www.lyrics.com/lyric/4743801/Carra+Barra+Wirra+Canna https://mojim.com/usy134473x1x4.htm
However, my biggest problem with your rollback of my edit is that of the 36 entries listed under "Usage in Popular Culture" exactly 6 of them cite sources and you don't seem to have a problem with any of the 30 that don't besides mine. The only use in music that cites a source is the one from 1914, despite the fact that there are three previous entries from even further back that don't. The song itself is the citation. It exists, it is easily referenced, and Rolf Harris is notable enough... considerably more notable than Rhodesian folk artist John Edmund.
This isn't an opinion I'm listing, where some scholarly opinion is needed. I'm citing actual factual data that is easily corroborated. Rolling back the edit when it was done in the same style as other edits that you didn't rollback seems arbitrary, and if your objection is to the lack of citation on that one entry, you could have done even the slightest research to find a citation and linked it yourself. 12.52.143.131 (talk) 10:31, 28 March 2022 (UTC)
- @12.52.143.131:. Thank you for the info above. Pls note that information added or changed needs to be supported by independent, relaible source such as from the newspapers or books. The sources you provide are considered not reliable. The editor who added/changed the info needs to provide the source for verifcation - see WP:PROVEIT and WP:BURDEN. Those unsourced info as mentioned by have been removed since. Cassiopeia talk 07:16, 30 March 2022 (UTC)
- No offense intended, but if something is using a direct quote from the primary source, it should count as a valid source. Direct Quotes are more reliable than even independent sources. A newspaper article, by its very nature, is going to have the bias of whoever wrote the article. Ditto any scholarly work. Additionally, if we are accepting quotes from newspapers or books, which are published references, then a published book as a primary source, or published song lyrics should be acceptable as well. This isn't me (or any of the others commenting on why these works used the term, or judging them for using the term). We were quoting that they did, in fact, use the term. Facts that are easily verifiable by reading or listening to the work in question.
- Furthermore, what source would be acceptable for song lyrics besides places that collect and public song lyrics? 12.52.143.131 (talk) 06:50, 3 April 2022 (UTC)
- Additionally, the burden of proof entry states "All content must be verifiable. The burden to demonstrate verifiability lies with the editor who adds or restores material, and it is satisfied by providing an inline citation to a reliable source that directly supports the contribution.
- Attribute all quotations and any material whose verifiability is challenged or likely to be challenged."
- It must be verifiable. It doesn't need to be verified unless it is likely to be challenged. You have challenged it simply because citations weren't given, which isn't the proper methodology. Challenges should only be leveled when you actually doubt the veracity of the entry. Since these are all easily verifiable entries, your request for citation isn't valid. 12.52.143.131 (talk) 06:53, 3 April 2022 (UTC)
- I'm not going to source all the entries, obviously, but https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyfbD9vuJkA alone is the song, being sung. The word is clearly audible with no mondegreen easily confusing the lyric. 12.52.143.131 (talk) 06:59, 3 April 2022 (UTC)
- @12.52.143.131: Well, info added and changed should provide source for verification and the revert meant the info added was challenged. Direct quote can be added into articles but the source needs to be independent, reliable source and the content would state it is a direct quote either in quote form or states it is quoted from "who/by" in the body text. The issue here is the the lyrics sites are considered not reliable as per Wikipedia guidlines so are utube and the social media. Cassiopeia talk 07:48, 3 April 2022 (UTC)
- Youtube videos as documentation might be unreliable... which is highly debatable these days as a great deal of journalism happens in video essay form and Youtube videos are just as likely to be biased as newspaper articles. But a) a youtube video of a song presented as primary evidence of the song's lyrics should be reasonable and b) you challenged the information for the soul reason that a citation wasn't given. You had no other reason for challenging it. That's not what the challenge system is for. The challenge system is for questioning subjective judgements or for reportage of historical events. If I state "Stephen King, when asked, why he named a character Pickanny Jim, replied..." I would need a source of the quote. If I state "Stephen King, in the book IT, has a character named Pickanny Jim" the text of the book itself stands as evidence of the character's existence. I don't need to prove it with citations any more than I need to prove with secondary citations that the show Alex Rider has a character named Alex Rider.
- That said, the first lyric site I cited wasn't just any random Lyric Site. it's the primary one Google uses and is an authoritative reference. It is also a pay to access site. For most copyrighted material, no direct online source can be quoted because the full text of most non-public domain books aren't found online. For most songs, there is no official database of their lyrics and journalistic pieces are seldom in the habit of publishing the complete lyrics of a song. Relatively few journalists even do song lyric analysis, and those that do usually feature popular modern songs, not songs that are sixty years old.
- You are literally using the rules as written to block the dissemination of data simply because your obsession with citations is overriding your interest in providing people with accurate information. If you can suggest a methodology for citing song lyrics, I'll listen, but at the moment, I cannot think of a single reliable source for song lyrics, full stop.
- If I knew how to escalate my criticisms, I would. Since I don't, I'll just leave you with my commentary. I feel you are abusing the system for no good reason. I feel that the system exists for a specific reason and that your complaints aren't it. As an editor, your interests should be more in finding a way to make factual and relevant data accessible to the users of the Wiki, not in a doctrinaire and dogmatic adherence to rules that state "It's not my responsibility." Clearly, you feel strongly about Pickanny's usage for some unknowable reason, but honestly, I don't. I found the article from the song, found it interesting that the song wasn't listed, and added it. The song is of notable significance in that Rolf Harris is of notable significance. The song uses the word in question. Your denial of the usage being listed simply because the person who put the listing in place didn't have the wherewithal to locate an online newspaper article which quotes the lyrics does nothing to advance human knowledge, nor to make Wikipedia a helpful resource.
- Absolutely anyone who doubts that the line is as I reported it can verify it simply by spending thirty seconds going to https://www.amazon.com/Carra-Barra-Wirra-Canna/dp/B071LN9FSB and listening to the sample of the song, where the lyric is mentioned. Is Amazon a valid source? I don't know. Is Spotify? These aren't social media. They're vendors where you can hear the song in part or pay to hear it in full.
- Regardless. I have run out of patience with you. Have it your way. 12.52.143.131 (talk) 09:02, 3 April 2022 (UTC)
- @12.52.143.131:. Amazon, Spotify are not reliable source so are lyric sites. This is Wikipedia and Wikipedia is an online encylopedia and not a directory or helpful resource site. Wikipedia is not search engine like Google and verification of independent, reliable is the core policy of Wikipedia. Cassiopeia talk 09:15, 3 April 2022 (UTC)

- whoops,
as I was saying, I'm walking away from an edit-war with a partially-blocked IP user I can't seem to stop publishing in Renzo's controversy section, which was deemed unreliable in his talk page. Maybe you'd want to have a look? The information seems fairly relevant, but it's not written impartially and seems like an attack. Nswix (talk) 16:08, 3 April 2022 (UTC)
- Nswix, Just saw on the Grecia talk page, a discussion is raised but the issue has yet to be settled and the discussion yet to be closed. Pls do not edit the page anymore. I will look into it/as intermediary. Cassiopeia talk 01:03, 5 April 2022 (UTC)

- Some wikis will be in read-only for a few minutes because of a switch of their main database. It will be performed on 19 April at 07:00 UTC (targeted wikis) and on 21 April at 7:00 UTC (targeted wikis).
- Administrators will now have the option to delete/undelete the associated "Talk" page when they are deleting a given page. An API endpoint with this option is also available. This concludes the 11th wish of the 2021 Community Wishlist Survey.

Rejection of Draft: Peter Queally (fighter)
Hey man, I was checking my recent submission of the article Draft:Peter Queally (fighter) when I noticed that it has been declined. Someone who had previously declined the article had told me that it would likely be accepted if submitted again, which is why this was a surprise. It was also rejected on notability grounds (ie the fighter not having 3 fights in Bellator). This is confusing to me because Queally has 4 Bellator fights, has fought for world titles and has headlined shows. Sorry to be a nuisance, but could you clear up for me why this article has been declined (and if I am missing anything blatantly obvious). Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by FFCETT77 (talk • contribs) 21:58, 18 April 2022 (UTC)
- FFCETT77 Good day. I havd explained the reason in the comment section of the draft page prior your message above. Pls read it again and if you still dont understand then pop back here. Cassiopeia talk 01:51, 19 April 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks buddy, I went back and had a look and I still kinda am unsure. Do you know why there are specific time periods for Bellator where fights are seen as being notable enough for a Wikipedia article? And of this is the case, if Queally beats Benson Henderson at Bellator Dublin will this be enough for him to get an article? Is there anything else I can do (ie lots more references or something else)? Thanks (FFCETT77 (talk) 22:09, 19 April 2022 (UTC))
- FFCETT77 Good day. For a MMA fighter to be notable and have a stand alone page in Wikipedia as per NMMA guidelines and GNG,
- (1) the subject needs to have at least 3 fights under top tier promotions (UFC, Bellator (from 2009 to 2015 and from 2022 onwards for men divisions ; from 2009 to 2015 and from 2021 onwards for Women divisions), and Invicta).
- (2) the subject fails (1) but have fought for a championship belt under top tier promotion, such as Nicco Montaño.
- (3) the subject fails (1) but has been in the world top ten under Sherdog or Fight Metrix rankings at anytime of their MMA professional career - such as Janay Harding.
- (4) the subject pass general notability guidelines if there is anything notable that supported by significant coverage from independent, reliable sources such as from the major newspapers about the subject besides their MMA career (that would considered routine reports) such as Carlos Ulberg who is a MMA fighter and a model.
- (5) the subject fails (1) but pass other SSG (sport specific notability) such as Alex Pereira who passed NKICK (kickboxing notability guiltiness).
- To answer your question, Peter Queally does to pass the notability guidelines even after he has fought Hederson, but once he has 3 fights as per (1) then he is notable and not until then.
- If you are interested in actively edit MMA fighters/events pages, then let me know. I can send you a list of info on the norm of editing MMA related pages, to help you with minimum frustration and edits got revert or receiving warnings. I am here to help and let me know if you have any other questions. Cassiopeia talk 02:06, 20 April 2022 (UTC)
- First of all I want to thank you for helping to clear that up, it makes more sense now. I guess I’ll just have to wait until he fights a few more times. To answer your follow-up, yes I am interested in editing MMA fighter/event pages, and have created Draft: Andre Fialho (fighter), Draft: Zarah Fairn as well as the Peter Queally one. Hopefully they all can be accepted (although Fialho might need one more UFC fight-I’m hoping because Fairn was a top 10 womens featherweight on fightmatrix that’s notable enough). If there are any articles that need creating or editing please throw them my way- it’s quite an enjoyable and efficient process.
- Thanks again for the help. (FFCETT77 (talk) 10:57, 20 April 2022 (UTC))
- FFCETT77, In your user page, you mentioned you had numerous Wikipedia accounts, would you pls provide all the usernames of those accounts please? Cassiopeia talk 04:19, 21 April 2022 (UTC)
- Right so I’m not sure what I was doing or thinking when I wrote that because it makes it sound like those other accounts were relevant, but this is the first account that I’ve ever edited or done anything on, the others were when I was around 8 on old email addresses. (This bit is an edit—- Okay so I had a look and I found an old Wikipedia account that I had from 4 years ago, called User:JE77FFC, but there’s like 4 edits and I didn’t have a clue what I was doing back then) Basically what I was trying to say was that I’ve been using Wikipedia for a long time, but this is the first time that I’m actually contributing to the site. Why do you ask? Is it important?
- I’ve also updated my user page.

FFCETT77, Good day. This is a long message with lots of info, so you might have to reread it again once you have finished it. See below
(1) (important) Multiple accounts - Clean start - Some editors do have more than one Wikipedia account for a very specific good reasons, such as a few Wikipedia admins have 2 accounts, one the normal/active one, and the other just to set up so they would know how a default user page would look like without changing any of the setting or adding some function via user script so they may assist new editor's questions as they would able to see/understand and answer the new editor certain questions. When an editor create more than one account (say account A (initial) and account B (new account) and edit the same pages for certain particular reasons for certain personal preference - such as edit warring or create the second account after their first account was banned due to certain issues, then it is call WP:SOCK. Sock account will be banned indefinitely and it is a very serious offend. From your info above, I have check your User:JE77FFC's edits (total 8) , there are some disruptive edits but seem you dont have any tie with the edits and pages with your new (this) account. I had talked to an admin and they would advice with Wikipedia:Clean start - pls read the page and understand it well and follow what the page states (very important) - See the communication btw the admin and I regarding your case - here. I need to check with admin of your case as first, I think you dont know about SOCK and dont know it is not good to have more than one account nor clean start. I am a counter vandalism trainer and new page reviewer trainer in Wikipedia, and many editors would come to me to attend the programs or question regarding MMA editing and but being SOCK without my knowing. Pls do not edit disruptively or making any vandalism / unsourced edits but constructive edits here on.
(2) MMA editing - I have sent the list of editing MMA related pages on your talk page. Kindly read. I suggest your to observe the experienced and regular MMA editors on the events and fighters first for awhile prior editing so you would familiar yourself on how those pages are edited. You can check on the article history page to view the editors' edits and know who are the regular editors. Currently there are 3 editors, HeinzMaster, Ticelon and myself write upcoming notable fighter articles. We would only start writing the fighters page usually after they have fought their second fight in top promotion event. HeinzMasterl has help out writing a lot of the content Draft:Peter Queally (fighter) - you can go to the draft article history log to see them.
(3) WikiProject Mixed martial arts] - If you want to know more about Wikipedia MMA project - pls go to Wikipedia:WikiProject Mixed martial arts
(4) Welcome page - Pls read the Welcome page on your talk page and check out the links so your may understand some of the basic Wikipedia guidelines.
(5) Draft pages - As for the Draft:André Fialho (fighter I have change the fighter name with local name (with accent marks). I have declined the draft page. I have outline in details of the NMMA and GNG notability guidelines to you on the previous message, may I know why you still submit the draft page since it fails the NMMA guidelines. As Draft: Zarah Fairn - I have moved to Zarah Fairn Dos Santos and accepted the page.
Let me know if anything else I could help. Welcome to Wikipedia and thank your editing MMA page. Stay safe and best. Cassiopeia talk 04:59, 23 April 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you for taking the time to write this and check with other members of this community. I have read all of the links and attached information and I’ll continue to follow the rules as per. I might not be as active as before because I’ve got GCSEs (big UK exams) in a month, but thanks again for your help.
- (FFCETT77 (talk) 10:49, 23 April 2022 (UTC))
- FFCETT77. Study hard and all the best. See you when you in a month. Stay safe and best. Cassiopeia talk 22:58, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
