Tech News: 2023-19
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- Last week, Community Tech released the first update for providing better diffs, the #1 request in the 2022 Community Wishlist Survey. This update adds legends and tooltips to inline diffs so that users unfamiliar with the blue and yellow highlights can better understand the type of edits made.
- When you close an image that is displayed via MediaViewer, it will now return to the wiki page instead of going back in your browser history. This feature request was voted #65 in the 2023 Community Wishlist Survey. [1]
- The SyntaxHighlight extension now supports
wikitext
as a selected language. Old alternatives that were used to highlight wikitext, such ashtml5
,moin
, andhtml+handlebars
, can now be replaced. [2] - Preloading text to new pages/sections now supports preloading from localized MediaWiki interface messages. Here is an example at the Czech Wikipedia that uses
preload=MediaWiki:July
. [3]
Problems
- Graph Extension update: Foundation developers have completed upgrading the visualization software to Vega5. Existing community graphs based on Vega2 are no longer compatible. Communities need to update local graphs and templates, and shared lua modules like de:Modul:Graph. The Vega Porting guide provides the most comprehensive detail on migration from Vega2 and here is an example migration. Vega5 has currently just been enabled on mediawiki.org to provide a test environment for communities. [4]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 May. It will be on all wikis from 11 May (calendar).
- Until now, all new OAuth apps went through manual review. Starting this week, apps using identification-only or basic authorizations will not require review. [5]
Future changes
- During the next year, MediaWiki will stop using IP addresses to identify logged-out users, and will start automatically assigning unique temporary usernames. Read more at IP Editing: Privacy Enhancement and Abuse Mitigation/Updates. You can join the discussion about the format of the temporary usernames. [6]
- There will be an A/B test on 10 Wikipedias where the Vector 2022 skin is the default skin. Half of logged-in desktop users will see an interface where the different parts of the page are more clearly separated. You can read more. [7][8]
-
jquery.tipsy
will be removed from the MediaWiki core. This will affect some user scripts. Many lines with.tipsy(
can be commented out.OO.ui.PopupWidget
can be used to keep things working like they are now. You can read more and read about how to find broken scripts. [9]

Hello,
I am unsure of how accurate the "Available Trainers" section is seeing as you just accepted two new students merely days ago. However, I am a returning editor that mainly deals with vandalism and have over 50% of my edits in talk pages. I am looking to expand my scope to deal with more aspects of Wikipedia and thought this would be a great place to start. Let me know if you are available and if you are willing to take me on. Quick question, so while i was just updating ufc athletes’ status after the rankings system changed as i would usually do sometimes on a weekly basis, now is the time (especially the day after) where you chose to give me several warnings about “improper citation” when the source was already provided. I’m genuinely confused. Serassin (talk) 20:03, 17 May 2023 (UTC)
- Serassin Good day. I have been updating all the UFC rankings in fighters' pages and List of UFC fighters for the pas 5 years, so I know what you said and the warnings were valid. This is one of the examples of your edit on fighter ranking - see here-1. " As of April 11, 2023, she is #9 in the UFC women's flyweight rankings, and as of May 16, 2023, she is #11 in the...." was your edit. If you look at the source "[1]" - it states access date is April 11, 2023 which means it is for the ranking of April 11 on WFLW ranking. So where is the May 16 source? The second example here-2 - " As of May 16, 2023, he is #15 in the UFC welterweight rankings.[2]" The source indicated date of April 25, 2023 but the info is dated as of May 16, so the source is not updated. In this second case, all you have to do is to change the access date to May 16, 2023, which you didnt, since UFC ranking site stay in the same URL but in different date. I hope you can go back to all the edits you made on UFC fighters' rankings "as of May 16, 2023" and correct them. Be safe and best. Cassiopeia talk 23:19, 17 May 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for that, i will look for that in the future. Serassin (talk) 23:53, 17 May 2023 (UTC)

Tony Ferguson article
Hey, Cassiopeia! I wish all the best for you for giving me all the information i needed to change the articles. Like huge props for it. I did change it and i sended MMA Junkie as a source for it... But now there is a user who joined just two month ago his name is DarkHorseMayhem. He deleted my amendment and then said that you do not know about MMA articles since you're not participating in them for last time. Meanwhile i think you do you seem as an expert and maybe even a bit of a teaching person for me. Could you possibly just talk with him or tell me who is right or who is wrong. Look i would have did it myself but when i did things didn't go quite well... In my opinion he acted unprofessionally by insulting me by saying that i do not understand a simple things after being told them few times. Then he told that he didn't have time to answer me because he isn't a nerd who lives on internet. Which by the way means he thinks i am one. He literally said that: "You been told multiple times that what is written in site sherdog as resul of the bout will be written in fighters pages if you can't understand such a simple thing thats your problem if you continue to act like this and change things despite been told severe times its wrong i will report you. DarkHorseMayhem (talk) 06:39, 26 May 2023 (UTC)" and also "Second of all for all fighter we use sherdog for spruce to put as fight ending result despite even I don't agree on some but I won't change but it was said in Sherdog Cassiopeia probably just didn't want to argue with you so that's probably why you think you are right( no offense) when you left message and didn't get answer. Also I have personal life and stuff and don't spend all time here that's why my respond is late.. It should stay this way it is guess that's why we did for all fighter changing for two fighter now just because you think it's right it's not ok.. I didn't mean to insult you btw. DarkHorseMayhem (talk) 16:23, 26." You see? He claimed that he wasn't insultive by insulting me in every way possible saying that i'm stupid, annoying as some weirdo and probably a nerd. Since you was the person who made me introduced to the MMA Wikipedia i wish to ask you is it enough reason to complain on him for insulting me? Because if it is i would think about opportunity of complaining about him. With all respect to you and the other colleagues including him, Akaan327. Akaan327 (talk) 17:54, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
- Don't matter the situation have been solved. Thank you again and have a good time! Akaan327 (talk) 18:00, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
- So you didn't even try to understand what I mean in my last message.. Guess you seem have negative opinion about me although I explain thing also once again me joining two months ago doesn't mean. Also once again me joining two months ago doesn't mean anything should I start by saying that I have far more edits on you and edits more arrivals then you etc? Guess if we go that way it wouldn't end.. Once again try to understand what other person mean before making assumptions(this is not insult btw).... DarkHorseMayhem (talk) 18:08, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
- But how do you think was i right then? Akaan327 (talk) 18:41, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
- ? DarkHorseMayhem (talk) 18:52, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
- I just wanted his opinion, chill. I didn't want him to do anything bad to you. I just wanted to know if i'm right can he change that instead? Akaan327 (talk) 19:47, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
- ? DarkHorseMayhem (talk) 18:52, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
- But how do you think was i right then? Akaan327 (talk) 18:41, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
- @DarkHorseMayhem and Akaan327: Good day. I saw the conversations between you two in DarkHorseMayhemm (DHM)'s talk page and also the edits on Ferguson page.
- 1. when communicate with other editors, pls be civil and polite and comment on the edits and not name calling the editors - see WP:Civility.
- 2. there are many Wikipedia guidelines and for such the learning curve is very hard for most new editors for such it take a very long time before an editor know some of the fundamental guidelines.
- 3 - Since this is Wikipedia, we follow the policies and Wikipedia guidelines in regardless we agree with them or not. So when guidelines is presented to you, pls follow and pls read the links (highlighted in blue) and read them yourself). I have guidelines countless of new MMA editors and some stop editing and some become constructive experienced editors and some did not listen to the advice and get themselves banned for good and didnt able to create an account after that. So I do suggest to both you pls follow the advice and follow the guidelines.
- 4. All content added needs to be supported by independent, reliable source and all social media are considered not reliable and many other source, official websites, and content (sources) provided which have any affiliation, connection, associated are considered not independent. So pls stick to the sources I provided in Akaan3277 talk page for body text info and not using other sources except major newspapers. (note:sportkeeda is not considered reliable source and pls do not use it).
- 5. Wikipedia is all about verification and not about fact - pls see WP:But it's true!. So we stick to what the source say. Example : if the source says the subject has 2 sons but in reality he has 3 sons, we will state he has 2 sons in the article with inline citation (supported by source).
- 5. We use Sherdog for the fight result (fight method) on the MMA fighters' pages and UFC events as per Wikipedia MMA guidelines. So pls do not change the fight method and always check the info on Sherdog website.
- 6. Pls note that not all info that derive from independent, reliable source (IRS) are significant enough to be included in the article as Wikipedia is an enclyopedia. So social meme info is not usually to be added in the article.
- 7. Pls read the MMA list info I sent to both of you and refer to them so you would understand the norm and adhere to the guidelines.
- 8. Lastly, pls "observe" for awhile and do not edit anything you have not seen as an example first so you could understand the norm and how to edit (such as do not change the fight table in the UFC event page from vertical to horizontal), do not add the round # before the fight has finished, change or add the nick name of a fighter where it is not shown on Sherdog web site and many many more.
- Pls let me know what else I can help. Be safe and best. Cassiopeia talk 09:07, 28 May 2023 (UTC)
- Mm... Huge thank you for all! But with that being said i do not see the "punch or punches" as the fight method. I mean it is fight result.. Yeah, for sure. But in my opinion it is not kickboxing or boxing it was by the same MMA rules. It is not much different. And by using only the one source you give it the opportunity to be not objective. Because, it doesn't have any potential oponent opinions. Although, i still respect you and him and thinking thank you for all provided information! Akaan327 (talk) 17:47, 28 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Akaan327: Sorry for not being clear. In Wikipedia MMA article, fight method is how the fight ended, such as KO, TKO, technical submission, submission, decision, etc. with a brief info in the bracket such as (rear-naked choke, punches, flying knee and etc.). Fight result means "win, loss, draw, no contest. It is not about potential opponent/opposite (not sure which one you meant) opinions but it is about verifiability by independent, reliable which is the Wikipedia policies and this is Wikipedia all about. Using Sherdog as the source for fight method is the Wikipedia MMA guidelines as not only Sherdog is the largest (worldwide), and oldest (Sherdog started the collecting the info in the beginning of MMA history - even ESPN back buy the info and content from Sherdog before the deal with UFC as they dont have reporters to report MMA and dont have their own database) MMA source (fighters info) and fight content and also it will reduce edit warring in the related article about fight method. - Hello! Thank you again! All i wanted to ask that can you write that Sherdog says one thing and the other sources tell otherwise for example? Akaan327 (talk) 03:02, 29 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Akaan327: there are times when Sherdog states TKO (front kick and punches) yet other would sources would say TKO punches and another source would say TKO without further more brief info, and other source would simple indicates KO and etc. In this situation, editors can edit warring till the cow comes home and that would be not only unpleasant situation among the editors since in Wikipedia the spirit is to help, support, educate and work together with other editors to improve the project (Wikipedia) instead of fighting with each other and no consensus which method/source to be used, which make many editor so bitter and leave Wikipedia or some of them became destructive and not adhere to wider consensus Wikipedia guidelines and vandalize the pages and become banned (I have witness this countless times). So as all we the MMA editors, pls stick to the Wikipedia MMA guidelines. (Again, pls take your time to "observe" other regular, experienced MMA editors' edits to know the norm of editing MMA related articles). Take care and let me know if you have any other things which need help. Be safe and best. Cassiopeia talk 03:40, 29 May 2023 (UTC)
- Hello! Thank you again! All i wanted to ask that can you write that Sherdog says one thing and the other sources tell otherwise for example? Akaan327 (talk) 03:02, 29 May 2023 (UTC)
Let me know if you need further assistance for I am here to help. Be safe and best. Cassiopeia talk 22:33, 28 May 2023 (UTC)

Request for NPP help
Hello Cassiopeia, I'd love to get taught to be a new page patroller (PRIMARILY for drafts) I've read all the things (well most) I have all the perms (not really) but I don't know where to get started!!! Could you help? The Tips of Apmh 15:34, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
- The Tips of Apmh Good day. The program is for NPP (new page patroller) and Draft page (AfC - article for creation) is channel to write articles in Wikipedia. There is no program for reviewer for AfC; however, NPP program is very similar to that of AfC notability requirements for an article to be published after accepted by reviewer/patroller. (Draft is usually for new editors who learning how to write an articles and most of the time they are not familiar with the Wikipedia notability guidelines and not sure if the article meets the requirements) and new page is for editors who is experience with the notability guidelines and who is experienced on writing articles in Wikipedia. NPPS program is very complihensive and do require a lot of your time on reading the guidelines and working on the assignments. There is no time limit to finish the program as every participant work on the assignment on their free time. Most of the participants would finish the program in 3 months. If you are still interested after reading the above then pls complete WP:TWA (short program -- 45mins), and once you have finished it then pop back here. Be safe and best. Cassiopeia talk 08:25, 28 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Cassiopeia Hello, you are saying that I don't need to have special permissions to approve drafts for the main namespace? The Tips of Apmh 20:57, 28 May 2023 (UTC)
- The Tips of Apmh Good day. You need to have permission to be NPP (new page) and as well as Draft (AfC) to review the articles as they taking care by two different groups(editors) (as they are two different channel to submit new article for reviewing processes) in Wikipedia. The NPPS program is for NPP reviewers and there is no program for Draft reviewers. However, both NPP and AfC share the similar requirements for an article to be accepted to Wikipedia main space with slightly different info/criteria. I have guided some editors who interested in both reviewing process/requirements, but usually is after they have graduated from NPPS (New Page Petrol School) and additional info will be provide for AfC reviewing processes. Let me know if anything else I can help. Be safe and best. Cassiopeia talk 22:47, 28 May 2023 (UTC)

(note: if you cant go back and continue, then you have to start a new one again. Also, some of the format in TWA can not be computable with mobile device, so pls use your laptop/computer to work on the program). Be safe and best. Cassiopeia talk 09:41, 29 May 2023 (UTC)

- Apmh Pls note that I have set up the program for you. Pls book mark the page on your computer. Kindly read the "communication section" at the bottom of the assignment prior reading the links/guidelines provide or answering any assignment questions. Welcome to NPPS. Be safe and best. Cassiopeia talk 04:23, 30 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Cassiopeia This will take 3 months to complete? Apmh 13:30, 30 May 2023 (UTC)
- Apmh What I said was, most participants took 3 months to complete the program, few shorter than 3 months and some more than 3 months. It depends how much time the participant willing or able to spend time to read the material given (guidelines) and working on the assignment. To say all that, the program do not have a time frame set for an editor to complete the program as you work on the program as your own pace. Cassiopeia talk 02:18, 31 May 2023 (UTC)

Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 30 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 31 May. It will be on all wikis from 1 June (calendar).
