National Libraries Day

Hi, Noted that the article on National Libraries Day is marked for deletion. Bit surprised as it is a national event backed by a number of renowned national bodies. Can you advise on what would ensure that this item is not deleted? Thanks. Ijclark76 (talk) 12:26, 30 January 2012 (UTC)Ijclark76

Sorry, I thought I did that by linking to the official site...it has a full list of the organisations backing it. Is that not sufficient? Ijclark76 (talk) 12:38, 30 January 2012 (UTC)Ijclark76

Ok, so to clarify an official list of national organisations backing it is not sufficient, I need to provide national newspaper coverage as well? Just to be clear on this. How soon is it likely to be taken down as obviously it is this coming week-end and there is unlikely to be any coverage until later in the week? Thanks for your help, just want to ensure that I can address this appropriately. Ijclark76 (talk) 12:50, 30 January 2012 (UTC)Ijclark76

Ok, no problem. I'll add them when they are published. I take it BBC local news coverage at this stage doesn't count!? Perhaps I have created it too early. Will re-add after the week-end if required. Thanks for your help. Ijclark76 (talk) 12:58, 30 January 2012 (UTC)Ijclark76

Oh I see, didn't spot that I have a week. In that case it really isn't a problem and should be fine. Thanks again. Ijclark76 (talk) 12:59, 30 January 2012 (UTC)Ijclark76

  • Well, I did wonder. Wasn't sure how 'important' the source needed to be! I'll amend it at some point today referencing the BBC local news and the Evening Standard. Ijclark76 (talk) 13:18, 30 January 2012 (UTC)Ijclark76

File:Lawshall Swan.JPG

Hi. I have only just started adding photos to my Lawshall pages and have noticed that File:Lawshall Swan.JPG is put forward for deletion. I see it is tagged as "F2. Corrupt or empty image." but wonder what the problem really is so that I can make sure such problems are avoided in the future. Regards Finnish Gas (11:44, 31 January 2012 (UTC)).

  • Did you actually read the deletion tag? It says "an image, hosted on Commons, but with tags or information on its English Wikipedia description page that are no longer needed". Surely that is clear enough? You applied a category here on en:, realised your mistake, and applied the tag correctly on the Commons. Your only mistake was that instead of blanking the description here, you should have tagged it {{db-author}} to get it deleted. Incidentally, I consider it a crime to upload geographic images without proper coordinate information. See the gbmapping tag added here (thank goodness for Google Street View!). Geograph would welcome your images - and there they force you to geotag them properly. Incidentally 2: Wikipedians are very verbal people and tend to deprecate articles with too many images. Rather than overload the Lawshall article with even more images, create Commons:Lawshall as an annotated gallery of images of the village. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 12:02, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

Harper Adams University College

I did considerable editing to the Harper Adams University College on 14/11/11. Most of this has since been undone, with claims of copyright infringement. But it came from our own website and we chose to have the information repeated on Wikipedia. To make matters worse, it was replaced with an inappropriate reference to one of our competitors (possible vandalism). Is it possible to have it restored as per 14/11/11 please? (Communications Manager, Harper Adams) — Preceding unsigned comment added by JaclynGreen (talkcontribs) 12:48, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

  • Go to the college's website and, on any page where there is text which you wish to use in the article here, place a clear declaration that the text is released under the CC-by-SA 3.0 licence. Place a statement on talk:Harper Adams University College pointing to that licensing. And with every edit you do using such text, mention in the edit summary that you have copied it. But it is better to let others with no COI write about the college - most of the stuff added on 14/11/11 was too long winded anyway for a Wikipedia article. But if you want to restore it to that state, why ask me? Just do it. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 13:01, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

Redington (India) Limited

Hello RHaworth, I just now created article Redington (India) Ltd. After writing the article, I decided to move the page to Redington (India) Limited so that acronym for “Ltd” can be avoided. It was then I noticed that “Redington (India) Limited” was created 3 times in Jun 2011 and was deleted every time (A7, G11 & G12). As a result, the name has been blocked from creation. Redington is a public listed company with revenues over $3.4 billion. Since it is listed in two of the biggest stock markets in the world (BSE & NSE), I think there is a clear case for the article to be created and kept. Please review Redington (India) Ltd and should you deem fit, can you please move the page to “Redington (India) Limited”? Many thanks. Cheers AKS (talk) 14:39, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

RHaworth, I think you should be ashamed of using foul language on social platform. Please go ahead and delete the article if you think Wikipedia if you personal property. There is a reason why different user levels are created in Wikipedia (like Admin etc) so that less experienced people like me can be guided and administered. If you do not have the character or manners to be an admin; then it is not my fault. It might be worthwhile for you to know that most of the information presented in the article has been taken from the "investor presentation" which is 100% authentic and is filed with the regulator (stock exchange). However, for easy reading (since the investor presentation runs into several dozen pages (and although I have quoted the presentation), I have referenced some parts of article to company website. Cheers AKS (talk) 17:16, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

  • "Foul language" indeed - my remarks were well within the limits of parliamentary language. Also I am sorry if you did not recognise that I was giving you positive advice. I feel that you have very grudgingly done the absolute minimum in the hope that I will accept the article. I want to see a more enthusiastic improvement. I have e-mailed you one of the deleted states - it is hopelessly spammy but it will give you an indication that that a decent sized article can be created if you pull your finger out (and I am sure you will call that foul language!). If you get fed up with me, try the other admins who deleted previous states of Redington (India) Limited or simply move the article to Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Redington (India) Limited and apply the appropriate AfC tag at the top of it. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 22:20, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
    • Dear RHaworth. Let me bring you back you basics. Read point # 4 in Wikipedia:Five pillars. "Respectful and civil manner" - do these words ring a bell???? Expressions like "ashamed" and "pull your figure out" might be acceptable by you as it might be a part of your daily life but certainly not mine. I don’t use them in general conversation; especially once when I am conversing with strangers. Following;
      • "Positive advice": Already taken about significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources.
      • "Grudgingly done the absolute minimum": Who told you that I was doing anything so that you accept the article? I simply added some more independent sources (ref significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources you quoted). Article written by me complies with guidelines and is notable. I don’t have to prove anything to you. But as I said earlier, you want to delete the article - go ahead and do it; why wait for my actions?
      • "I want to see a more enthusiastic improvement": No one writes on Wikipedia as per your guidelines or desires. I will do what the Wiki rule says and if the criteria are met then I don’t have to show my enthusiasm to anyone - you included. What are you - a school teacher & Wikipedia a primary school?
      • "E-mailed you": Received, thanks.
      • "Decent sized article": What exactly is a decent size article & where exactly is "decent size" defined? If you feel that the article size can be expanded then do it yourself. Why tell me? I am not your assistant.
      • "If you get fed up with me": Thanks. I did not know you can read minds too :-)
It is good to see experienced people like you with so much of volunteer work. However it is a real shame & waste that the temperament is not right. For example, in your first message (not talking about the language you used) you actually ended up drawing my attention towards something that I could have done better. However, you made me waste my time and energy (including your own) on writing useless stuff when we could have utilized the same time, energy and effort in something more constructive and meaningful. I am not interested in talking to you any further and am ending my conversation here. CheersAKS (talk) 04:02, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

Deleting pictures

If you had actually taken the time to check the websites you would have realised the pictures were free because the websites had released them to the public. However I hold no anger but I just say unto you that all I try to do is make the politicians or artistes of Jamaica more known to the wider public in an attempt at promoting Jamaica. At the same time Wiki develops as a source for information. If you insist on removing harmless pictures that only help to develop pages.... Kudos to you. Bye. -JamaicanMD — Preceding unsigned comment added by JamaicanMD (talkcontribs) 01:25, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

You are a piece of work good sir. Since you love running through my uploads why don't you actually check the internet and do some of your own research... What a waste. You sir are the reason wiki has so little information.

Not sure if that is evidence but I provided the source JIS is free. Also as you can see I am new but I believe Jamaiaca, like any other country needs recognition. The tourism and Prime Minister are vital and two of the most searched politicians by any foreign persons. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JamaicanMD (talkcontribs) 01:41, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

Forget it

Ok do whatever you must. I am not used to Wiki procedure I will not argue. If this is the way Wiki admin behave (that is considering you are an admin) then I do not wish to continue here, I hope they find someone else who can contribute as much to Jamaican politicians and artistes as I have. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JamaicanMD (talkcontribs) 01:47, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

Deletion of page?

Hi. I notice on 7th Feb you deleted the Prisoners of Conscience Appeal Fund page. I work for this small charity and I would like to create a page for our organisation as it is our 50th anniversary year and I would like to explain our history etc. I do not think this would be classed as advertising or promotion as other similar organisations such as Amnesty have pages. Please could you put the page back up so I can edit it. Many thanks, Claire Ranyard — Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.36.117.250 (talk) 08:59, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

  • Consider yourself lucky that I am replying - I usually ignore IP address contributions. Deleting your article was an easy decision: I saw the words "we" and "our" and needed to read no further. Have you actually read any Wikipedia articles? My best advice is wait until someone with no COI thinks your fund is notable and writes about it. If you insist on trying to force an article in, try finding a sponsor. But first, actually try and write appropriate text for a Wikipedia article. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 15:57, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

Deletion review for Nick Pitera

Hi RHaworth. I've opened a deletion review on Nick Pitera, an article you deleted in July 2008. MSU Interview

Dear RHaworth, My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you. Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you. What is the proper procedure for fixing errors in article titles? Does the article need to be redirected or recreated with correct title? Some one just recently did this to my article, Blooming Grove High School. Indyjrg1762 (talk) 10:28, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

  • Four years here and you still don't know how to fix or know to link to articles from talk pages! This edit should have given you a clue. At the top of every page, to the right of "view history" is a pull-down list. It will offer you a "move" option. (If it seems strange that you should have a one option list, be aware that admins see "delete" and "protect" options as well.) — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 10:42, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

  • Why on earth request an answer by e-mail? If you cannot be bothered to watch this page for a reply then you do not deserve a reply. You wanted the article deleted so why nit-pick over the deletion reason? I have no idea why I used G8 for the deletion reason - just a temporary lapse. I've asked the contributor in a specific message to provide more information & references & an indication of why it's important for similar articles they've written, & intend to follow up with them. Regardless of the individual article, it sends a wrong message to newcomers to delete for the wrong reason, because then they will not understand the rules. Then either ask your dad to change your password back, or create a new account. Editing is not fun without an account! --Bmusician 04:38, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

i will create a new account. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.161.12.108 (talk) 12:30, 26 February 2012 (UTC) i made walter55024.--Walter55024 (talk) 14:30, 26 February 2012 (UTC) will someone reply?--Walter55024 (talk) 16:48, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

  • Thank you for telling us your new name. Indications so far are not at all promising: you have created two AfC submissions which do not even attempt to assert the notability of their subjects. Your addition to Toy Story 3 will continue to be reverted until you provide good, independent supporting evidence. Personally I will give you a week to prove that you have turned around but do not be surprised if another admin blocks you sooner. As to taking out vandalism, what advice do you want? Just watch new pages and recent changes and you will see plenty to keep you busy. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 17:10, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

anyway the afc was to get messages and help also can you put a link for a vandalism page?--Walter55024 (talk) 17:29, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

  • Did you actually see my links to new pages and recent changes above? The whole point about fighting vandalism is that we need more people to find it. If I see vandalism, I fix it on the spot. I don't pass it on to someone else to fix. An higher proportion of vandalism comes from IP addresses. Here are some examples (all now fixed): unsourced additions: this and this; pure vandalism: this. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 17:42, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi there - I've been waiting for someone to delete Tudor Grange Academy Worcester so the proposed page move I requested (and the move in the header of this message) can go ahead - why have you move protected the article? Mato (talk) 18:26, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

There are two schools, as I stated in my request: Tudor Grange School is now Tudor Grange Academy; Tudor Grange Academy is now Tudor Grange Academy Worcester. Mato (talk) 18:29, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

Thank you - yes I agree the comma is in keeping with convention, though the DfE lists the school's name without a comma. Dab page seems to work well, just one problem you misspelled 'Solihull' in the new page name. Thanks. Mato (talk) 18:41, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

Hello RHaworth , The template {{Indian mathematics}} contains the name of Bhāskara II but it doesn't include any of his work in the treatise section. I think Siddhānta Shiromani his magnum opus, should be included in the treatise section. Just can't figure out how to do it. Sourodeep25 (talk) 16:41, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

Redirects that include abbreviations

The deletion of redirects as a result of a page moves for article names that contain the abbreviation does not seem to be consistently applied. See Wikipedia:Redirects_for_discussion/Log/2012_February_19#CALM.2C_Campaign_Against_Living_Miserably and the following three entries. Who is "right"? Are there some overly pedantic admins out there? Cheers. -- Alan Liefting (talk - contribs) 23:31, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

Monetary annexation

My article on Monetary Annexation got deleted, and I think you deleted it(?). I am very new to Wikipedia, so I hope I am doing this correctly. As I understand it, my article got deleted under the speedy deletion process and you were the person who deleted it. I guess, what now? I think it got labeled as being "promotional". That was not my intent. I just think it is a really nifty idea (my enthusiasm may have been misinterpreted as endorsement(?)). I have also found that it is a rare concept, and even a rare name for it. I recently went to a conference where it was talked about, though people were generally not familiar with the name. Thus, I figured that there was a group of people that were interested in this knowledge, and I had the knowledge, so I posted it. Being my first article, I am sure my presentation was lacking and I didn't have many links. I tried to find some real quick because I heard that if you don't have links it looks like you are making something up. Did I not find enough, or did you not like the ones I had? Just let me know what I can do to get the page back. Thanks, LCM — Preceding unsigned comment added by LawrenceChesterManning (talkcontribs) 17:30, 23 February 2012 (UTC)

  • Whaddya mean "think" I deleted it. What does the log say? OK, perhaps is what inappropriate to delete as spam but it certainly read like original research / hopeless neologism (which you in fact admit). It was also written in very poor English. If you can actually produce a comprehensible version supported by reliable sources, feel free to submit via AfC. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 18:42, 23 February 2012 (UTC)

Deleted article - As Blood Runs Black

As Blood Runs Black. I'm trying to either create a new version of this article, or restore a previous version that was deleted. The original article was deleted as the band hadn't done much, and seemed destined to fold. They have since gone on to release their second album, and are as notable as many of the other bands on wikipedia. Can a previous version of the article be restored for me to update? Duncan3dc (talk) 20:55, 23 February 2012 (UTC)

I'm not asking for it to be restored on the strength of an unreference article about their second album, I'm asking for it to be restored as it meets 2 of the criteria specified by WP:BAND that I added to your talk page and you removed [1]. Why is this band not considered notable? Having said that yes I would appreciate you emailing me the text, thanks Duncan3dc (talk) 08:18, 24 February 2012 (UTC)

Why was this article deleted? — Preceding unsigned comment added by YakovKagan (talkcontribs) 21:19, 24 February 2012 (UTC)
