Dr. Tew, I looked around at some of the countries and the journalists with them. It was so difficult to choose just one to write on. Therefore, I figured it would be best if you would pick for me. I asked some friends to choose one out of group I have them, and they didn't help with my decision. I wouldn't mind writing on someone from Mexico, though. Thanks!Kdwerner (talk) 23:13, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
I assign you Mexican journalist Maria Elizabeth Macías Castro ("La Nena de Laredo") from Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas.Crtew (talk) 00:59, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
Dr. Tew,
I know you assigned me the journalist, Maria Elizabeth Macías Castro, but after searching several websites, most are saying that her name was actually Marisol Macias Castaneda. Should I continue with the name you gave me and write Marisol Macias Castaneda as an alternative name or use this newly found name instead? Kdwerner (talk) 19:02, 13 September 2012 (UTC)
Use the most recent (the stories with the later date) but address the other name in "also known as ..." Crtew (talk) 22:25, 13 September 2012 (UTC)
Dr. Tew,
I have revised my statement of nobility. I also think I have may have got the Reflinks tool to work. Kdwerner (talk) 16:16, 26 September 2012 (UTC)
Well, I tried the Reflinks tool today. The first time I tried was a few days ago. For some reason, it ran for me this time! So, I have no idea why it worked today and not the other day! Kdwerner (talk) 18:47, 26 September 2012 (UTC)

Dr.2, I recently completed the first steps to creating a Wiki page--hopefully with success. There were a few issues I had, which you may be able to notice when viewing my user page. I tried to create a numbered list within my bulleted list, but it did not appear correctly. I am probably doing something wrong with my format and any advice is appreciated.
Hope your weekend goes well, and a delayed thank you for signing me up for the workshop at The Shield. Hdfulk (talk) 21:32, 24 August 2012 (UTC)
You're welcome! And you're done with this part of the project! Crtew (talk) 20:36, 26 August 2012 (UTC)

Jatapley, Please be aware that you have an unusual case here among these assignments. You're researching and writing about a missing person case. You need to adhere to all the standards of writing a bio about a living person. You may wish to consult a well known case of a non-journalist who is missing , such as the Disappearance of Madeleine McCann. Your article should be entitled the Disappearance of Zane Plemmons. Another student is tackling the disappearance of Mario A. Segura. Still someone else is writing about a journalist from Michoacán who went missing in 2006 in the Disappearance of José Antonio García Apac. You may wish to also consult other articles in Wikipedia about missing journalists, such as Andrew Shumack or Frédéric Nérac, who are still missing (the articles are not very good at this time); or Dorothy Parvaz, who disappeared for a certain period of time (this article is well structured). As you're writing, err on the side of a reappearance. Look for what is noteworthy about this case. Just as in a newspaper article, you look for what is interesting and newsworthy, in this encyclopedic entry, you're looking for what is interesting and important in the big picture encyclopedic view of the world. Here you are emphasizing the long-term and not as in a newspaper the immediate, short-term point of interest. Good luck, Crtew (talk) 18:50, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

Hey Dr.2, I was thinking of doing an article on journalists killed in the Somalian Civil War. One journalist that stuck out to me was Abdu Jaylani Malaq.Nathan Cook (talk) 13:06, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
The journalist Abdi Jeylani Malaq Marshale already has a page. I know it's frustrating but often names from other cultures/languages are spelled in English in multiple ways (which is really a problem with our English language spelling system -- Fish or Phish) and Wikipedia search is unforgiving. Thanks for being patient. You are to write a section about missing journalists in Syria for the article List of journalists killed during the Syrian civil war. Other students are writing about foreign journalists, pro-state journalists and citizen journalists for the article. Crtew (talk) 01:16, 11 September 2012 (UTC)
Dr. 2, I have read through what you posted on my talk page. I have tried before to search for this assignment just on google, and I have not had mich luck. When I type in "missing journalists in syria" or "missing foreign journalists in syria" I get actual people that are missing. So, I tried typing "phenomenon in syria over missing journalists", and still I dont get a description or anything, no dates. Just getting alot of names of people that are missing, and what their families are going through. Maybe something over Syrian officials denying holding journalists, but still it is about one individual, not ALL missing journalists.
I don't want it to look like I am not trying, I have been working on this all weekend with little to no luck. You said you had posted something about United Nations over the month of August,--I don't know where you have posted this, I've looked on your page, my page, and searched wiki. (I also tried searching that as well on google, and names came up again and again, and the date august 30) I'm really frustrated with the searching and finding (to me, what seems like nothing) and I'm wondering if I have the assignment confused.

You've been assigned José Antonio García Apac, a journalist from Michoacán who went missing early in the Mexican Drug War. Here's a link to the article about journalists killed in the Mexican Drug War.Crtew (talk) 17:54, 4 September 2012 (UTC)
Please be aware that you have an unusual case here among these assignments. You're researching and writing about a missing person case. You need to adhere to all the standards of writing a bio about a living person. You may wish to consult a well known case of a non-journalist who is missing , such as the Disappearance of Madeleine McCann. Your article should be entitled the Disappearance of José Antonio García Apac. Another student is tackling the disappearance of Mario A. Segura and another student will take on Zane Plemmons.

You're assigned Somalia and a 1993 attack on journalists during the Battle of Mogadishu. Expand on the Battle of Mogadishu (1993)#Attack on safe house and in particular the murder of Dan Eldon, Hos Maina, Hansi Kraus and Anthony Macharia and the lone survivor Mohammed Shaffi. Movie rights have been purchased for a biopic of Eldon. You may find that interesting professionally. Crtew (talk) 12:42, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

You are assigned to create and write an article about Syria and the Shaam News Network, which uses citizen journalists to cover the Syrian civil war and then disseminates video and news information through digital technologies to domestic and global audiences. Crtew (talk) 19:12, 11 September 2012 (UTC)
Dr 2, I have created my statement about the Shaam News Network. I couldn't however find much to add to the info box other than "Internet" and "Syria" which had already been added. I did however add their service which is "News Reporting". I hope I did everything correctly. My statement is more of a summary. I inculded the info you suggested on Blackboard. I hope this fulfills the assignment requirements. If I have left anything out or done this wrong, let me know. I am saving my sources in a word document as I go. Thanks, Mewest — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mewest (talk • contribs) 02:34, 18 September 2012 (UTC)
Dr 2, I have began writing my rough draft for my Wiki page over Shaam News Network. I have filled in a few sections including "Notable Reporting and Reactions". I had trouble gathering information, but I continue to dig and research on my own. I am saving my cites as a go and plan to plug them into Easybib to cite them properly before publication. As of now they are bare links saved in a Word Doc on my laptop. I have not added Wikilinks to anything yet, but I plan to do so when work is becoming for finalized. However, I am a little confused on the last part of your instructions sent in your USI email. It said to run a "reflinks tool". If I am missing something or not understanding fully, don't hesitate to tell me so.

Arichardso, You're assigned Dona St. Plite a broadcast journalist from Miami, Florida, United States.
You said there is nothing on my user page, I thought last time I worked on my Wikipedia page I did it right. I guess I worked in my sandbox, so my I did is hopefully in my sandbox. So what do I do, do I just copy the stuff I wrote in my sandbox to my user page? I hope I don't have to start over.Arichardso (talk) 03:32, 18 September 2012 (UTC)==
I've been working on this Wikipedia for hours trying to figure things out on my own and reading. I think I figured out the InfoBox somewhat and I figured out the Notability statement somewhat. I also went to the sandbox and copied my Bio that I wrote in there along with my interest and put it on my user page. That's what I think you wanted us to do. Hopefully I got it all right. Let me know if I did anything wrong. I'm trying : / Arichardso (talk) 05:33, 18 September 2012 (UTC)
There is not a lot of information on Dona St. Plite. I looked at all your links and searched for info on this person and could not find his birth date, so I had to subtract the year he died by how old he was. There was not a lot of info on him, just repetitive information stating about the same things. So the page I build for this person may be very short. Also I could not find a picture of him. Arichardso (talk) 05:40, 18 September 2012 (UTC)
I've completed the infobox and notability statement. Arichardso (talk) 05:57, 18 September 2012 (UTC)

Hello, my name is Chelsi Carter. I am creating this page for a Mass Communications class. I will be writing about Ana María Marcela Yarce Viveros, journalist for the magazine Contralínea, who was found dead in a park in Mexico City by an early-morning jogger in 2011. Marcela was found dead with another woman and the two women had been strangled; they were discovered naked with their hands and feet tied and rope around their necks. It still is not clear why they were murdered.
Their killings follow a pattern of murders by organised crime gangs and drug cartels. But they are the first such killings of media workers in the nation's capital city.
Alison Bethel McKenzie, director of the International Press Institute (IPI), said: "The brave men and women of Mexico's media should not be put through such horrors for working to uphold the public's fundamental right to information."
The two women, both in their 40s, were long-time friends and were last seen having coffee together on Wednesday night at a city centre cafe.
The killings bring to 10 the number of media workers killed in Mexico this year, which means that the country has surpassed Iraq as the deadliest in the world for journalists.

A brownie for you!
Hello, Crtew. Thank you for your contributions on the journalists killed in the Mexican Drug War. I hope we can work together on a biography (or anything related to the subject) in the future. I'd gladly lend you a hand. If you ever need another pair of eyes, shoot me a message. Cheers. ComputerJA (talk) 20:07, 2 September 2012 (UTC) |
Last two were not journalists
Hello, Crtew. I just wanted to let you know that Article 19 reported that Arturo Barajas López and José Antonio Aguilar López are not believed to be journalists. The information still has to be confirmed, but a Mexican media outlet reported that they were photographers for social events, and that none of them had journalism experience. Judging by the way there were executed, I guess we have to wait and see. It is still unclear if they were killed for their profession. [1] You might want to notify any of your students who is planning to write about these two. Cheers. ComputerJA (talk) 02:41, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

I'm a blogger myself, and have worked for many years with projects related to citizen media in my country, so this is of high importance to me as well and would love to help. Cheers! Hello there, unfortunately I'm not an administrator so I can't restore the article so you can see or work on it. I simply delsorted the AfD to the appropriate Project delsort. The reasoning behind the deletion despite little input was that the admin agreed with the nominator’s rationale resulting in a soft delete. Your best course of action would be to contact the deleting admin User:ItsZippy & discuss the matter with him/her, possibly having it restored as a Userspace draft before being improved. If this proves unsuccessful you can always contest the deletion at WP:REFUND. Hope this helps, happy editing. ★☆ DUCKISJAMMMY☆★ 01:20, 8 September 2012 (UTC)
University class work
Hi, Crtew, I noticed on User talk:Cncarter1 that you and that user were discussing a class assignment in which Summary was to write about Raghida Dergham. I have had to mark xyr initial article for speedy deletion because it consisted of nothing more than the subject's name.
I would suggest to you that a) you familiarize yourself with the policies and guidelines for school and university projects; and b) that you instruct your students to create their articles in their own user spaces. Articles created in user space are not subject to all of the same guidelines as article space articles (although they must still adhere to policies against creating blatant attack pages or promotional pages). Your students will be able to create their article in their own space at their own pace, and then submit the page to you for review without risking the articles being speedily deleted. Unfortunately, even if created as a class assignment, articles in the main space must adhere to all Wikipedia policies, and are subject to deletion if they do not. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 15:27, 17 September 2012 (UTC)
I'm Peridon, an admin here. I suggested to one of your people (Cncarter1) that they construct their article in userspace and I moved their start into their space. It's a safer environment for article work - being liable to deletion only really for attack, spam and copyright violation. You might like to look at the comments I made on their page about starting an article. Good luck with the class... Peridon (talk) 10:53, 18 September 2012 (UTC)
Online ambassador
Hi Sir Tew! I've asked a great Online Ambassador, User:LadyofShalott, to support your class. I didn't realize you'd worked with AstroHurricane before, and if he is up for helping as well, all the better. It looks like your class is off to a great start, and I think it's a really cool project you've devised for your students. One thing you might think about is shooting for some multi-article "Did you know" entries to feature a set of related biographies at once.--Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 17:42, 17 September 2012 (UTC)

- Hi, Professor Tew. I did see your class being featured on the WMF newsletter, so you must have done reasonably well last semester. I don't feel like I had been of much help last year, as I was only able to provide a minimal amount of feedback. However, I can gladly be an ambassador again this semester. I'd just like to remind you of one thing - please be on the lookout for incorrect disambiguations, as a journalist who was killed or still living may in fact have the same name as another individual who also has a Wikipedia article. It's good that your class is checking notability more rigorously this time though, because that should help your students learn more about how to write encyclopedic articles. Also, it often occurs that new editors are discouraged from editing simply because there seem to be so many rules or the process may seem hard to navigate. Please feel free to contact me about any issues that arise, although due to workload this year I may take a bit longer to respond. Best regards,~AH1 (discuss!) 00:57, 21 September 2012 (UTC)

- Hi there. I'm not entirely inactive but for the time being have quite a few school assignments to deal with myself, but did drop in earlier yesterday to leave a message for User:Ldfeller. Just a question: is there a specifically assigned heading format to follow for journalist articles (personal, career, attacks/death, impact, context, aftermath, etc.)? While this is an ideal routine for assignments in terms of collecting research, it may make the article more readable once it is published to integrate the "context" of the journalist or targeted media group into the remainder of the article. Just a heads-up on some streamlining advice. Best, ~AH1 (discuss!) 00:57, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

Hello
Hello Sir Tew, I just noticed you signing on to the Free Speech Wiki Project, and I remembered enjoying your talk at the education meetup at Wikimania this year. I'm very happy to see that you have a classful of students working on journalism articles. This sociology class has been recently producing some excellent work and I'm very optimistic not just about the impact of Wikipedia on college students, but of college students on Wikipedia. Also, based on your interests, I wonder if you've heard of the case of Abdulelah Haider Shaye. I wish we had more information about it, but I haven't found all that much available in English. Maybe you or your students know something Wikipedia doesn't (yet)! Cheers, groupuscule (talk) 02:39, 2 November 2012 (UTC)
Thank you so much for the cleanup you've been doing on Michael Kelly (editor). I completely forgot the whole "change x to y" rule for COI edit requests, and thought I'd put off what would amount to a rather major overhaul to make entirely by edit request. So I was pleasantly surprised to see that you'd nonetheless undertaken the task of cleaning it up. Now, of course, I find myself seeing a million things I'd love to chip in, but can't. I think the best way to proceed right now is for you to leave a note at the talk page whenever you're done with major edits, and then I can file an edit request for any additional changes? Or do you think something else would be more efficient?
(For the mean time, by the way, I'm sure there are sources that give my mother's middle name as Greenberg, but it's not. It's Sue, but as shown here, she normally goes without a middle name.)
Thanks again! — Francophonie&Androphilie (Je vous invite à me parler) 15:03, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
- Don't worry about the "change x to y" rule, I have been watching the Michael Kelly (editor) article for a long time, and my first reaction matched your thoughts on the discussion page. I just always thought somebody else living in the US would take care of it and focused on journalists from elsewhere, but nobody ever fixed it. I'm going to go ahead with this revision in three steps: 1) Bring the article into factual accuracy and make sure fundamental information is sound and covered. 2) Address the notable body of his works of journalism. I'll be asking my students to contribute to this phase as extra credit and so you'll see an education banner go up on the talk page. 3) Wade into the more controversial realms. I'm not touching the Glass issue or his politics until the basics are squared away.
- About your doubts of factual accuracy, please challenge me on anything like this!!! I understand that Greenberg is not Madelyn Kelly's middle name but at least 2 sources indicate it was her maiden name (which is how it being used here), just as Kelly is the maiden name of Michael's sisters (in the same Wikipedia article) and this is followed by their married last names. The sources for "Madelyn Greenberg" are The Guardian (UK) and The Atlantic. If this is wrong, let me know. You can list any factual challenges in this thread or you can send them to me via email.
- Is it possible to get a photo of Michael Kelly in the public domain through Wikipedia Commons? As of now, I can't find one.
- Thank you for raising this issue on his article's talk page. Crtew (talk) 18:54, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you so much for all this! My mother will be thrilled - she's the one who asked me to request this edit, but I myself have always been dismayed at how poor Wikipedia's coverage of journalism is. In fact, right under the "Michael Kelly Award" section you can see quite a few pages that need some heavy cleanup; I should really take a look at it myself, but as a shameless WikiSloth, I always find myself more drawn to the little/obvious edits. As for the content points, I believe we have the rights to his "About the Author" photo from Things Worth Fighting For, so I'll ask my mom about that. And on the middle names, why not just go with a "neé" for my mother? I believe that's the standard style on here, though I could be wrong. As for the sisters, I'd imagine that it's going overboard (per WP:OBVIOUS) to list their maiden names when you've already said they're his sisters. On my Aunt Kate, though, who is currently referred to in the article as Katherine Bottorff, she generally goes by "Katy Kelly," and you can cite any one of the children's books she's written as proof of that. (If you need non-original research proof that that's the same person as my father's sister, I can go find out which book she dedicated to him, but I'll let you decide what the bar for sourcing should be on some of these points.) Thank you so much! I hope it doesn't sound like I'm complaining - just trying to do the best I can, from an appropriate distance. — Francophonie&Androphilie (Je vous invite à me parler) 08:05, 20 November 2012 (UTC)
- Your pointers have been helpful! Thank you. I have independently verified the point about Katy Kelly through a published interview. Wikipedia style on the use of maiden names includes the options of "neé" or the use of the parenthetical, which is the current form. I would advise you NOT to use the photograph on the back cover of book as it is in a copyrighted work, and your instinct to ask your mother is a good one. The first step of setting out the basic facts is nearing completion, and so are there any points where the media got it wrong? Perhaps further research on a point like this can lead to a verifiable correction. Currently, I'm on step two or identifying well-known reportage.Crtew (talk) 18:26, 21 November 2012 (UTC)
Hi professor Tew, I fixed the quote on my page like you said, but I can't seem to get the map on my page to work.I need to put one of Mexico City but it will not work for me. Your students' submissions at AfC
When moving pages from your students userspaces to AfC space for review, could you please complete this action as a proper page move and not a copy and paste move. We're ending up with almost duplicate submissions in userspace and AfC space and this is causing a headache for the reviewers. The reviewers tools don't work in userspace which is why we like the submission to be in AfC space. Also, we don't know which submission you want us to look at when you move pages by copy and paste. Pol430 talk to me 21:56, 12 December 2012 (UTC)
I'm not sure I understand. I have been using the "submit" link in the articles for the creation banner, and from there the "move" link in the banner at the banner. The only ones think I copied and pasted was one article in main space that a student had revised -- Rima Maktabi -- which wasn't submitted for review, and at least two students I think had incorrectly submitted early in the semester and edited from their userspaces, which created some confusion in our process. I think I copied and pasted the latter ones because they already had two article spaces and I didn't feel comfortable deleting articles from student spaces. If you're addressing all of the student articles in general, then I don't understand at all.Crtew (talk) 22:23, 12 December 2012 (UTC)
- The example I'm referring to is User:Lmhorn1/María Isabella Cordero vs Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/María Isabella Cordero. Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/María Isabella Cordero already existed as a working draft; I thought you had performed a complete copy and paste page move, but on closer examination I see you only copied some text across. However, on the 3rd December you submitted User:Lmhorn1/María Isabella Cordero for review despite there being a pre-existing draft at Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/María Isabella Cordero -- this is where the problem arrises. It is preferable only to work on and submit the version that exists in AfC space otherwise we end up tracking two different versions of the same submission (we keep track of all drafts and declined submissions as well as pending ones). I've been clearing a back log of userspace submissions tonight and I've had a few duplicate submissions for this project you're working on. I've sorted out the previous ones, but I just wanted to mention to avoid too many repeats of this kind of duplication. Pol430 talk to me 22:43, 12 December 2012 (UTC)

Bejinhan talks 04:07, 16 December 2012 (UTC)Hello
Hi, I was editing a couple of your students' pages before realizing that we've met before! My name is Evangeline and we met at the Wikimania Education Meet-up in July. We talked a bit about journalism, education and what not. I've been absent from Wikipedia the past few months... just gotten back from a 3-month army training stint. I noticed that your students are creating pretty good articles. If you need any help, please let me know. Best, Bejinhan talks 04:17, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
This persistent retagging has to stop. Communicating through edit summaries isn't working. You are not the creator of the page. The fact that you contributed substantial content doesn't change that. I am going to decline the nomination yet again. Do not retag it until we've talked this through. Thanks.--Bbb23 (talk) 18:33, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
- I wasn't doing that to be malicious, but rather the admins making the decisions were leaving me notes in the edit history and there were several. So I didn't have a central person to talk to. I am the instructor of the course. It's true I'm not the creator of the page, but the page was created by the student outside of our instructions. If you want to leave it, that is fine with me, however, the people at AFC do not like more than one contribution of the same name. So the developing page down the line will at some point bump up against this old, dusty article. I'm fine with this one sitting there, but I seriously doubt if this copy will be touched anymore. It seems like better practice to clean up stray work. It's up to you! Thanks, Crtew (talk) 18:41, 16 December 2012 (UTC)

Hello. I hope you are enjoying the holiday break. I have a question: Are any of your students working on the journalist Roberto Javier Mora García, assassinated in 2004? I had plans to create an article for him tomorrow. Thank you. ComputerJA (talk) 22:22, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
DYK for María Isabella Cordero
On 28 December 2012, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article María Isabella Cordero, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that María Isabella Cordero, a former Mexican anchorwoman on Televisa, was killed in Mexico's most violent state in 2010? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/María Isabella Cordero. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and it will be added to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

Thanks!
Thanks for reverting this edit as unsourced. It seems to be a myth that started with the article's creation back in 2004.[2] I've looked at almost every printed article out there on this and have seen absolutely nothing to support this assertion that the U.S. government refused to aid in bringing his body back in any way (or that the West German government had to "step in" for any reason). His own news crew brought his body from the murder scene to the plane, flew out with him, and then he was transferred to a plane sent by ABC in Panama. Anything else is not supported by the facts that were reported. Anyhoo, sorry to rant on about it, but I do appreciate your catch very much. He was a friend of the family; and, most importantly, a good man that didn't deserve what happened to him. Cheers :> Doc talk 05:17, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

No award
Hi Crtew, On David Bergman (journalist). The film was not given any award. It was given a special commendation, along with another film. http://www.rts.org.uk/sites/default/files/file/PDF's/Awards/Awards_Archive_February_2011.pdf — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bogra 1978 (talk • contribs) 07:23, 2 February 2013 (UTC)
Hi Bogra, Isn't it an award? It was presented at an awards ceremony, and so that much I know we can agree upon without dispute. Yes, it is a special commendation, and on that we can agree also, which means that it was set apart as special. Isn't a special commendation a type of award? If not, what is it? It depends on your definition of award, but even a narrow definition of award would have to aknowledge that an award doesn't have to called an award to be one. Trophies, medals, commendations, certificates .... So what is it? If you were given a special commendation at an award ceremony would you list it on your C.V, and if you did under what title? Crtew (talk) 09:54, 2 February 2013 (UTC)
Hi Crtew,
Thanks for your message. It is factually incorrect to say: "The program won "Best International Current Affairs Award" from the Royal Television Society in 1995". Because it did not. The award went to "The Dying Rooms". — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bogra 1978 (talk • contribs) 11:03, 2 February 2013 (UTC)
Bogra, This is the original cite.[[3]] Crtew (talk) 11:55, 2 February 2013 (UTC)
We have two conflicting sources. Neither of them are independently verified (hence weak). However, we know that an "award" was won. But we don't know what it says on the citation of that award. Crtew (talk) 12:06, 2 February 2013 (UTC)
But the two sources don't contradict each other in the special commendation (top line). What's missing is the citation of that award.Crtew (talk) 12:17, 2 February 2013 (UTC)
Ok, I finally found a better source in a database. The "international award" was won by "Dying Rooms" with "War Crimes File" receiving the special commendation in the same international category for its "courageous expose of Islamic extremists now living in Britain." (I'll put the citation in the Wikipedia article.) Still sounds like an award to me though but with a more accurate name. Thanks for bringing this other source to my attention. Response
Yes I have, including Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Anthony Johnson (reporter) and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/James Brandon, two extremely unnotable local journalists. I also proposed Lyn Brown (journalist) for deletion way back in 2006, but that was removed, though the article was deleted in 2011 via AfD, which I did not take part in. Honestly, due to all the nonsense that has happened to Wikipedia, which I learned will never be perfect, and having more important things to do in life, I am considering taking a long wikibreak or even just downright retiring and no longer really care what happens with Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Paul Douglas (cameraman) (2nd nomination), though I suggest not closing that AfD prematurely so other editors can express their views. The Legendary Ranger (talk) 01:10, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
Thank you for the list! I really appreciate that. I only work on journalists/journalism but just spot checking those three, I would argue that none of them are "extremely unnotable." I'm going to have them put in my sandbox so that I can salvage them. While I don't know what standards you're using to judge notability, I'm looking as well at their impact and work known within the specialized community of journalism. Brolan's 2005 award makes him notable under Wikipedia's own standards and award winners are always ("almost") saved in the AfD process, which is why I argued that he shouldn't be bundled. Douglas' work, I agree, may be perceived as non notable but that's only because he's worked in the background. Douglas' body of work as a whole and the number stories he has worked on pertaining to war and conflict in over 17+ years make him a significant journalist. Without knowing too much about Johnson (above), I already know he won awards and worked in ABC's flagship affiliate in New York, and you don't get to be a journalist there unless you're extremely competitive. The point here is not to berate your judgment. Your AfD nomination actually sparked some improvement in both Douglas and Brolan! When I am in AfD, I usually only get involved in nominations where I think that the person is significant but the Wikipedia article doesn't really communicate that significance. You rightly picked out two stinkers from the pot! Those were both awful pages and had been languishing for seven in years in a pitiful state. So I actually think you did them a service. But the listings were not broad enough to spark improvement or interest. I had both of them on my watchlist and only saw that they were being deleted when the pages were changed. A wider listing under news, television, Iraq and people would have helped. That's why your AfDs got so little participation in the cases of Johnson and Brandon. I hope I didn't discourage you, even though we seem to disagree alot (hahaha!). You have an eye for spotting badly communicated articles, which the mark of a good editor! Notification
Preface The following turn of events are illustrative of the problems one can get into in the most contentious areas of Wikipedia. Before this event began, I had no idea that users working in the most contentious areas of Wikipedia could be sanctioned by editors without a process. I would describe some of them as "hyper vigilant" editors with a completely different mindset than the average Wikipedian. I had some negative interactions with the User:Darkness Shines in an article about a journalist from his special area. Later, he issued this official looking warning about me (see below) based on my copy edits (punctuation, grammar, wording, placement of citations, etc.). I didn't take this sitting down and investigated his actions thoroughly. Others had the same experience with him. What ended up happening was that this template points to a list where DS placed us.
Here is the list of editors placed on notice (now edited with names deleted -- see history): [4]
It seems that DS was involved with all of these editors in editing disputes and then was placing them on a sanction list to quash their edits, which I gather were somehow opposed to his POV. I still believe this is intimidation as I say below. As an involved editor, he cannot place this banner down. You can read what happened "play by play" below as I am keeping this as a learned lesson about the tricky area of contentious Wikipedia, but the end result was that most of the names Darkness Shines put on the sanction list were removed by an uninvolved editor on 20 February 2013. Those names that were kept were put their for other reasons. The matter for me is now settled. From this experience, I learned about an area of Wikipedia I was unfamiliar with (contentious, controversial areas). For most of us, what is contentious to these editors isn't really a big deal but they take it very seriously. I also think I learned about how to make sure to keep my students in safe territory in the future. Keeping a difficult person away from yourself is quite difficult if you're involved in editing on a particular topic and they are in such a different mindset. Another lasting concern of mine is that editors can game the content by using administrative techniques to intimidate them. The one that DS used is not the only strategy one can use. For me, this stains the overall Wikipedia project and makes it vastly harder to improve content where there are so many passionate, sometimes unruly people. Crtew (talk) 15:39, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
The Arbitration Committee has permitted administrators to impose discretionary sanctions (information on which is at Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee/Discretionary sanctions) on any editor who is active on pages broadly related to India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Discretionary sanctions can be used against an editor who repeatedly or seriously fails to adhere to the purpose of Wikipedia, satisfy any standard of behavior, or follow any normal editorial process. If you continue to misconduct yourself on pages relating to this topic, you may be placed under sanctions, which can include blocks, a revert limitation, or an article ban. The Committee's full decision can be read at the "Final decision" section of the decision page. Please familiarise yourself with the information page at Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee/Discretionary sanctions, with the appropriate sections of Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee/Procedures, and with the case decision page before making any further edits to the pages in question. This notice is given by an uninvolved administrator and will be logged on the case decision, pursuant to the conditions of the Arbitration Committee's discretionary sanctions system.
As you obviously followed me to the ICT article which in my opinion displays a battlefield mentality I am posting this to let you know this article is under arbcom sanctions. Darkness Shines (talk) 16:38, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
- What are you talking about? I did not and would not follow you. I could give a flying anthill about you. Are you paranoid? This is absolutely crazy, and moreso after I explicitly told you on your talk page to NEVER EVER contact me again, and I mean it. This is the craziest behavior I have ever experienced on Wikipedia. Please stay away from me. I went to this page because of David Bergman (journalist) as there's an obvious wikilink missing from him to this article, but the article is so poorly written and horribly organized -- it doesn't deserve a C assessment. Crtew (talk) 22:55, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
MY STATEMENT ON THE ABOVE "NOTIFICATION"
- Let it be known by all who read this that Darkness Shines put the above template on my page. He did it incorrectly as this template makes him appear as if he is an administrator. He is not an administrator. Anyone may search this fact out. Nor is he or has he ever been a member of the Arbitration Committee. In fact, he holds absolutely no powers at all.
- Furthermore, the boilerplate template includes the words: "If you continue to misconduct yourself on pages relating to this topic, you may be placed under sanctions, which can include blocks, a revert limitation, or an article ban." I never did anything wrong and, therefore, I can't possibly "continue" to do anything but be myself. End of story. This is poorly worded and whoever is responsible for the wording should really consider the negative effects of it. It is throwing harsh words around without any system of controls.
- What is worse is DS's WP:Bad Faith statement that follows which says I was stalking him right under this fake template. For the record, I've asked him not to every contact me ever again. My only sin was to have picked a journalist who for some reason the above editor wants to chip away at with nominations for delete, reverts and some run ins with people who edit it. Now this editor happens to work on articles in a contentious area of the world and the Arbitration Committee allows anyone and their dog and pony to throw this template around. This is bad form all the way around.
- As for my two cents worth, the Arbitration Committee should never allow any Tom, Dick or Harry to go around like Marshall of the Outlaws and put templates down like this. There was and never has been any process for putting this template down. Darkness Shines didn't do anything special but put down the wrong code.
- Furthermore, I was never told anywhere in Wikipedia that by editing pages about the subcontinent, the system would allow for this type of template to be put on my page. That's wrong! Editors beware. This list should be made clear and a window should pop up that shouts "Trouble: If you edit any further, you could be harassed with warnings."
- What was my great sin in editing this page International Crimes Tribunal (Bangladesh), which is connected to another page of interest of mine David Bergman (journalist)? Oh yeah, I actually copy edited a bunch of commas. I corrected for style. I flagged some bad passive voice. And I rephrased some redundancies. I noted some places where citations could be better placed. And noted that some pronouns were actually ambiguous. (History exists for all to see.) Horror of all horrors, I did not make one single substantial content edit as the page was so badly written. Shocking as it is, I didn't want to make a content edit -- connecting Bergman with this content -- until the copy was somewhat readable. There is no way that this article should be C-assessed article. It's horrible and it's a start-article at best. It's disorganized and confusing and nobody who doesn't know a little bit to begin with can make heads or tails of what is going on. Probably because it can't be properly edited and people don't want to be around so many harsh editors.
- Back to the template: This template is a form of intimidation. The way it was placed here, incorrectly, and the way the template is allowed to be used with the Arbitration Committee's blessing if you happen to edit in the subsets of Wikipedia where there is infighting among editors. Since it's done with Wikipedia's blessing in these contentious areas, I can't hold Darkness Shines fully at fault because the system allowed him to place the templates (even if he did incorrectly and in so doing misrepresented his actually powers).
- Now we have to watch where we tread. This is a Wikipedia-allowed form of intimidation.
- Wouldn't it be great if people who wanted to make positive contributions in these contentious areas were allowed to do so. I must have ventured into another world because this is not the Wikipedia I have been editing on or using to teach students.
- In case you're wondering why I have to give this lengthy explanation, it is because these templates and the ARB COMM's approach is neither transparent nor are they communicated fairly to editors who stumble into a David Bergman (journalist) article or in International Crimes Tribunal (Bangladesh) territory.
- I was told that I could remove this template, but I'm going to leave it as it's a great learning experience for me and a great teaching lesson (should I decide to teach ever again with Wikipedia). I'm not so sure right now. Crtew (talk) 03:35, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
- He didn't pass the administration request, he is not an administrator. See this & this. Also he has to be uninvolved in the issue himself to be eligible to give anyone the notice. Mr T(Talk?) (New thread?) 12:42, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
- He does not have to be an administrator to use this template. The problem is that he did not realise that he needed to use an extra parameter that would have removed the 'given by an uninvolved administrator' line. I have explained this to him. CarrieVS (talk) 12:49, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
- I'm glad I have informed others who were also tagged about their rights and contributed to some transparency within this small circle. As the feedback from them comes back, they also now realize what is going on and it seems they were as confused as I was initially. I think they will begin to remove themselves from the list and assert their full rights! Crtew (talk) 13:12, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
- Clarification: I am talking about the notice he gave Crtew and me. Not the template in general. Mr T(Talk?) (New thread?) 13:15, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
I don't understand. What is the difference between the two? CarrieVS (talk) 13:18, 19 February 2013 (UTC)- Ignore that. I'm out of my depth here and I don't want to say any more on the subject for fear of making a mistake. I am going to ask for help from someone more experienced. CarrieVS (talk) 13:21, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
- It's amazing to me that someone with these kinds of basic problems and a history to boot can have "autopatrolled, reviewer, and rollbacker" rights. This is scary. Can anything be done about this? Crtew (talk) 13:24, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
- You might consult Bwilkins about it. Or take it to WP:AIV(for vandals and spammers)/WP:ANI if you want to report him. Mr T(Talk?) (New thread?) 13:32, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
- It's amazing to me that someone with these kinds of basic problems and a history to boot can have "autopatrolled, reviewer, and rollbacker" rights. This is scary. Can anything be done about this? Crtew (talk) 13:24, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
- I am going to ask for some advice. There are procedures for when someone's general conduct is in question, and I think it is possible (I am not going to commit myself yet) that they are called for here. Regarding, specifically, the removal of user rights, I understand there are procedures for that, but I have yet to research them.
- Regarding 'this is scary' and other comments in similar vein, I think you need a little sense of proportion: Darkness Shines is not in your living room with a baseball bat. The worst he can do is make editing Wikipedia hard for you until this is sorted out - unpleasant I am sure but many people get along their whole lives without ever editing. There is nothing that he can do that cannot be undone.
- Regarding 'It's amazing to me that someone with ... a history ...', what he may have done in the past should not stop him from getting any rights. It is his conduct now that matters.
- Regarding that list, I am not sure it was a good idea to remove names from it. It is simply a list of people who have been given that notice. Furthermore, I think it is best to leave it as it is in order to make it clearer for anyone who is brought into this discussion. With that in mind, I will restore the names, with an explanatory note. CarrieVS (talk) 13:47, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
No, do not revert my edit until you are absolutely sure of what you are talking about. I don't believe what you're saying is true based on my emails with an ArbComm representative. Crtew (talk) 13:50, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
- Has an ArbCom representative told you that you should/may remove your names? If not, I suggest that you do not remove them again unless (s)he has told you that. However, if you are now in contact with an ArbCom representative, perhaps you no longer need any help from me? CarrieVS (talk) 14:01, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
- I would also suggest that if you remove things form lists from which they should not normally be removed, on the advice of an ArbCom representative, you mention that in your edit summary, to avoid confusion. CarrieVS (talk) 14:05, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
- Carrie, This is the basic issue: The process is not clear and transparent and it looks like we are all under some kind of sanctions when we are not, there is no process, and DS and others like the Northern Light of something have misused the template. It is unfair for Wikpedia to allow editors to put us on lists without spelling out our rights and informing us about the process, especially with the language used in that template that implies we acted badly. I'm serious, this is a make or break issue for me. I will no longer participate in this environment that is appearing more like an anything goes scenario than a safe, civilized space. Crtew (talk) 14:09, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
- I understand your concerns. But I don't think they are best handled by announcing protests and deleting things. I don't know what is so unclear: there was an ArbCom decision that administrators may use more sanctions than usual on that topic. The Arbitration process, details of discretionary sanctions, and the ArbCom case in question are there for anyone to read. The notice states that the notification will be logged, so what is it that you were not informed about?
- Darkness Shines has misused the warning template - certainly he failed to use the appropriate parameters, very likely he used the template when it was not appropriate - but that does not mean that everything about arbitration is dreadful. We need to get to the bottom of this specific issue and do whatever needs to be done to rectify it, not to declare war on the arbitration process. This will be solved much more easily (and you will come out of it looking better) by allowing discussion to happen than by deleting things.
- Editors do things wrong on Wikipedia. Whether it's simple vandalism or something like this. It can't always be resolved instantly, but it can and will be resolved, and it doesn't mean that it should be made impossible for anyone to do whatever it was, because the only way to do that would be to stop anyone editing the encyclopaedia, which would defeat the point just a little.
- Now, do you want me to continue trying to help? I was intending to report this on WP:AN/I, but I don't want to do that if ArbCom are already assisting with this. CarrieVS (talk) 14:33, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
- I wrote to the ARB COMM List to tell them what was happening and I was told I could remove the banner from my page (similar to a disambig error). I mentioned the listing but didn't receive a response about this. Crtew (talk) 20:58, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

I'm backing off
You said earlier that you have been in contact with an ArbCom representative. I am very reluctant to get involved with a situation which has been/is being handled out of my sight by someone who is doubtless much more experienced with editing and policy generally and with some of the specific issues in this case (i.e. the Arbitration case) in particular. When I did try to help, you didn't seem happy with my handling of it, and suggested that I was acting against what you had been told by ArbCom, so I backed off. I do not want to contradict someone who almost certainly knows better than me.
There is also an administrator, EdJohnston, already involved with the case, and I don't want to oppose him either. My earlier intention was to go to AN/I to ask for the involvement of an administrator, but it seems that that is unnecessary; I will let him take the lead, and I certainly won't be reporting anything to anywhere off my own bat. I will keep an eye on the case and comment if my input is requested or I feel it would be helpful, but I would suggest asking EdJohnston's advice before mine from now on. CarrieVS (talk) 21:44, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
Thank you Carrie. I really wasn't trying to go around you but need to know what was going on about that warning list DS put me on and the implications of that template. The edits that we initially took care under your guidance got mucked up tonight. But maybe something will come out of this report I'm going to file. I'm not going to do anything now to the David Bergman (journalist) page so that I don't get sucked into a situation where people are gaming the system.Crtew (talk) 21:51, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

Don't worry
Well, there you have it. One tip for months to come. Don't worry and don't panic if you think someone is complaining about you. In Wikipedia very few things are actually hidden. If you are 100% sure you have done nothing wrong then relax. Don't get hyped and all involved in discussions on others' talk pages just because they mention your username. If DS feels he is being stalked; don't get offended, unless of course he frames it uncivilly in which case it will likely constitute a contravention of WP:CIVIL/WP:NPA.
I once was (and I guess still am) where you are and I can relate to you. I, some months ago, stumbled upon an essay (embellished with a cascade of candor), I recommend you read it.
I don't think you have contravened anything but as a precautionary measure please also read WP:CANVASS (also known as ″internal spamming″) because one might accuse you of trying to form a cabal (I have been accused of canvassing, that's why I know). why people refer to you as "Sir", "Professor" and why you "assign" subjects to editors? Are you running a class somewhere that has something to do with editing wikipedia? Cheers, Mr T(Talk?) (New thread?) 11:37, 24 February 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for you advice! I appreciate that. Yes I have used Wikipedia to teach. One of the issues here (in the
DS case) is my current concern about student safety if a student should run acrossthe likes of someone like a DS. For instance, I'm very interested in the Sagar-Runi murder involving the killing of two journalists in Bangladesh. What if I assigned that and it became contentious just because this area of editing is so wild? For the most part, I have my students write in their user space (once I get them started), which is 100 percent safe. But students stray (as they should if they're curious and independent)! And "Sir" is just an inside joke! Crtew (talk) 11:46, 24 February 2013 (UTC)- Okay then, Good luck. See you around, Sir ;). Mr T(Talk?) (New thread?) 12:29, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

Crtew, I'm sorry but your recent edits are beginning to look like stalking. They also, taken in conjunction, give the appearance of veiled personal attacks on him. If you have something to say about a pattern of editing by any other editor, then you have a couple of choices. Either start and RfC/U on that editor or take it to ANI. If the latter, you need to have a strong set of diffs to back up your assertions. I believe you are a good faith editor who has just gotten angry. That does happen so I'm not formally warning you, but you need to immediately put some distance between yourself and DS for a bit otherwise this is not going to work out well for you. Comment only on content, not on DS. Don't give the impression of following him around. Discretion, often, is the better part of valor.--regentspark (comment) 13:51, 24 February 2013 (UTC)
- That's fine but I told User:Applesandapples that I would comment on the edit war complaint on his page and I want to provide the editors there with the evidence for what I said. Crtew (talk) 15:48, 24 February 2013 (UTC)
- I suggest you stop commenting for the time being. AN3 can take care of it. I just noticed your comment above about DS and concerns about student safety. That is a definite violation of WP:NPA and the tenor is such that it is a blockable offense. But, since it was made before my mild warning, I'm giving you the chance to strike it out so please do that. Also consider this a definite warning that you'll be blocked if you make any personal comments about DS that are not on AN, ANI or at an RfC/U. --regentspark (comment) 16:20, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

Darkness Shines
Hey man, I see you're having issues with civility and unreasonable edits by User:Darkness Shines as well. I was wondering if you'd like to make a case to bring this before arbitration, as it seems like he has a history of doing such things. Cheers, Lostromantic (talk) 07:47, 25 February 2013 (UTC)
Lostromantic, Hi, thank you for reaching out to me. However, I cannot comment at this time. Let's wait and see. I have your contact info. Until then, there are a number of things you can do as a new editor to avoid problems with the people who are bothering you. 1) Gain some more experience editing in less contentious areas. You have to know policy inside and out. 2) Learn to use your user space for drafting. User space is the most powerful asset you have because you can draft, organize and perfect your copy there without any interruptions. Before you take it live, it would be good for you to get comments on your copy. 3) I can't really comment on tactics being used here, but the result is that a lot of great information is being buried in histories of articles. Go through those troubled edits page by page, and take out only the good information or information that can be made better by putting it in a document in your user space. From there you can fix it, make it airtight, and revive it in a much better form when you take it live. 4) Usually, in my experience, when copy is being criticized, your opponents have something right (maybe not all). Before you lash out, be generous and try to figure out where they are right and where they are wrong. Fix what's wrong elsewhere (in user space) or let it go. 5) Stick to you guns only when you have a locked air tight case. If you do, and you have problems, seek help from someone. 6) Never, go over 3 reverts. You might try other resources. But thank you for approaching me and saying hello. Best, Crtew (talk) 09:04, 25 February 2013 (UTC)
Regarding your edit war
Hey there, thanks for reaching me out and asking for advices. First of all, remain calm and assume good faith, getting a bad temper won't solve anything, secondly, answer any unanswered questions the other editor made in the article's (which the warring took place) talkpage, try to answer it carefully and non-arrogantly, I see that you tried to make the counterpart do further research, but we have to deal with lazy editors and getting a bit detailed won't harm you. If the discussion is tense and you need ask for third opnion on WP:THIRD (or I could even become the third opinionator, myself), if you want a broader feedback ask for a WP:RfC. If any of these fails, you may submit a report on User Noticeboard. Regards Eduemoni↑talk↓ 15:25, 25 February 2013 (UTC)

2013 Shahbag/Bangladesh Protests
The article should discuss the Shahbag protest within its context, neutrally, from an international point of view. Basically the Shahbag protest demanded the death of all accused, which has been criticized by UN, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty, David Bergman of New Age in Bangladesh, BBC, CNN, Al Jazeera, The Economist, The UK House of Lords, UK Bar Council, etc, as a mockery of the due process of law and responsible for counter protests from opposition. These media have claimed that the trial was not fair in the first instance, on top of that Shahbag is forcing mob justice on a court. Shahbag protest has expressed solidarity with government in suppressing opposition, and the government is justifying the killing of 140+ opposition supporters in 2 days using Shahbag demands as a popular back up. Its highly deceptive to say Shahbag is a peaceful movement. They have called on the government to eradicate Jamaat-e-Islami by force. Everyone killed were opposition supporters. The police is shooting opposition supporters on sight, without using any other method to quell the protests first. On the other hand Shahbag protesters are being provided by food and security regularly. Only one of them died, and even though the government is blaming the opposition for murder, several media has reported that it might well be an inside job by the government to blame the opposition. Some students arrested in relation to the murder have reported that they did not know their actual instigator well. The government is not arresting the actual instigator, leading to suspicion. Only expatriate Bangladeshi journalists such as Tahmina Alam have written positively about the protest. The sources used in this article quote only Bangladeshi media sources such as BDNews, The Daily Star, and some Indian articles which have been accused of yellow journalism favoring a fascist movement in Bangladesh. Bangladeshi sources revealing the situation of the opposition, such as Amar Desh, has also been ommitted from this article. Amar Desh reported that Shahbag backed goons are setting fire to Hindu temples, but Shahbag is claiming that it was the opposition who did it and so the police is justified in killing them. Shahbag has also threatened politically neutral professors, journalists, real 1971 freedom fighters such as Kader Siddiqui who expressed opinions against the mass killings. Every international media has confirmed that those who died belong to the opposition, so stop making deceptive comments such as the opposition is responsible for the killings. The rise of fascism and killings in Bangladesh is a direct result of Shahbag demands. I guess there are many Shahbag backers here trying to destroy the neutrality of this article. This article should discuss the situation about Shahbag fully. What's the context, what its demands are, the legality of their demands, the fairness of the original trial, their patronizing by government, the fascistic outcome of Shahbag and the mass killings of opposition using internationally reputed references, not the unreputed Bangladeshi ones that are already under severe criticism of yellow journalism. - BTW recently students in Denmark have protested against human rights violations in Bangladesh. (Shamelessshahbag (talk) 15:10, 5 March 2013 (UTC))
- Did you mean this for me or did you want it to go on the talk page of that article. I'm only for a neutral article. I'm not taking sides. But the article now is horrid. Crtew (talk) 15:13, 5 March 2013 (UTC)
- Same here sir, I do not stand for any political faction. I also want trial for 1971 war crimes which were committed by both sides and the statistics of which are twisted by both sides. But whats going on now is purely politically motivated because only a selected few opposition leaders have been charged with war crimes. Not only that, the trial that has been set up has been revealed to be unfair by many local and international media due to exposed govt. pressure on the tribunal, limiting of defense witnesses, abduction of some defense witnesses by law enforcers, allowing hearsay evidence by the prosecution and many more (refer to many international reports and authorities including UN and also one by David Bergman working for New Age in Bangladesh and a Skype conference revealed by The Economist and Amar Desh). To counter these allegations, and to divert public dissatisfaction regarding other govt. activities (check govt. activities since 2009), I believe the government staged the Shahbag protests with the help of some pro govt. media to justify the capital punishment as a public demand that cannot be countered. But this leads to a more unfair trial where a mob demands death penalty of all accused. How can a mob decide a court's verdict? The government urged the court to take the Shahbag demands into consideration. Can they do that? Where is the independence of judiciary. Obviously this will lead to protests by the opposition. Using a courage that they got from Shahbag the govt. open fired and killed 140+ opposition supporters in two days, and arrested 200000+. Isn't this fascism and a violation of human rights? That is why even though I am a politically neutral person, I just cant sit back and watch. I am for democracy and human rights. Bill Biggart
If you have a problem with material I have added, talk first. Wrong. If you want to add material in an article that isn't about that article subject, which violates both policy and basic, common sense guidelines about good article writing, then it is you who has to justify doing so to the rest of the editing community, and only after the discussion to that effect has concluded. Given your apparent ignorance of various policies and guidelines, you have zero authority or credibility to be issuing warnings to anyone, any more than you have to be giving orders to other editors, as you did repeatedly on the Biggart talk page. But if you really think that another admin will look upon your behavior kindly, then be my guest and "report" me all you want. Nightscream (talk) 16:23, 5 March 2013 (UTC)
I saw that you restored the information that prompted the warning.Crtew (talk) 17:08, 5 March 2013 (UTC)
- If you can agree to get rid of any reference of the word ONLY in WP:Bill Biggart... I have a question for you: Do you or do you not acknowledge that Biggart's notability is that was the only photojournalist killed while covering the attacks, and that the source cited for that statement supports this, yes or no?
- If no, then please elaborate, given that the cited source does flat-out says this. What do you think his notability is, and how is this supported by cited sources?
- If yes, then how do propose that the Lead section describe the nature of his notability, as is required by the Lead section guidelines, without using the word "only"?
- or any appearance that he was the single media-related death... There is no such appearance. Biggart is notable for being the only photojournalist killed while covering the 9/11 attacks. This is not the same thing as saying that he was "the only media-related death on 9/11", nor does it even resemble that statement, in appearance or in meaning, nor would any reasonably intelligent person who doesn't have a profound reading comprehension problem or doesn't suffer from a severe mental hernia infer such a thing.
- ...then I think I'm willing to come to a consensus. I think you mean "compromise". Consensus refers to the general majority of the Wikipedia editing community. Again, you really ought to try reading WP:CONSENSUS.
- I just can't stand to think of the word ONLY there or the appearance of it while 7 other people are forgotten. That's my only motive here. Your motive is incompatible with Wikipedia's mission. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. It is not a memorial (See WP:MEMORIAL), it is not a soapbox (See WP:NOTSOAPBOX), and it is not a platform for you to exploit in order to make a personal point (See WP:POINT). You need to learn these policies and guidelines, as well as the others I linked to on the article discussion page, and you need to familiarize yourself with them so as to incorporate them into your editing habits. Your apparent refusal to do so is hurting your ability to be a fully functioning and useful member of the editing community. In the end, neither the Biggart article nor any other article is going to be allowed by the community to include material that isn't directly about that article's subject, or have its valid content compromised to suit the whims of people with a personal agenda. The sooner you accept this, the better.
- But if you can see to it to agree to change the language as other people (cool, less passionate minds) are telling us... None of the other three editors who have weighed in on the article talk page to oppose the inclusion of your irrelevant section have suggested dropping the word "only". In fact, both the wording that Lexein suggested and the wording that siafu suggested (while arbitrary and less straightforward in Lexein's case, and bizarrely false in siafu's) include the word "only". RightCowLeftCoast suggested no alterations to the sentence in question.
- Please don't give me a long-winded answer with colors, bolds or italics :-), hahaha Hahaha, indeed. Nightscream (talk) 23:59, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
I'll come back to all of this when I have time. I'm not sure what to make of this. Crtew (talk) 00:12, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
- I can imagine. Btw, which editors did you invite to the consensus discussion? Did you post the invite on a particular project talk page? Can you link me? Thanks. Nightscream (talk) 15:36, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
- Please be aware of WP:Good Faith! I posted this to absolutely NO project pages. All I did was to create the discussion using the template offered and the relevant interests links are in the banner on the talk page. I'll take note of this last message for your future review. Crtew (talk) 15:55, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
- I am well aware of AGF, thank you, but thanks anyway for reminding me. It always warms my heart when an editor of a year and a half who has indicated ignorance of so many different policies and guidelines reminds an editor of eight years (and an admin of five and a half) of such a basic policy. :-) I didn't ask because I was accusing you of anything; I was just curious, that's all. Thank you for your response.
- Btw, I noticed that the German WP version of the Biggart article states that he was the only photographer killed in the attacks. I left a message on that version's talk page informing readers that this is incorrect, and cited the source for Biggart's notability from the top of the English article, and the 2001 CBS story you cited for that list of other media-related deaths, so that German editors can fix it. Thought you might like to know. :-) Nightscream (talk) 21:54, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
Hi. It's been two weeks since I asked you if you still felt that the passage in the article you felt was too closely paraphrased was still thus. You said you'd review shortly, and would be busy for the next few days. Do you still think it's too closely paraphrased?
Second, what is your response to my last message in the discussion about the Lead section's description of Biggart's notability? Nightscream (talk) 03:02, 20 March 2013 (UTC)
- Regarding your last edit, in which you added a dubious tag with the following edit summary: "readded dubious template; nowhere but on the official website have I read about a taxi driver telling him / that's dubious as it's not a neutral source".
- One more time for the cheap seats: You need to familiarize yourself with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines before editing here.
- Neutrality (notice the wikilink; you can click on it and familiarize yourself with it!) has nothing to do with sources. The idea that there are sources that are completely neutral, is inane. All sources have biases to one degree or another. Tell me, what would you regard as a "neutral" source? Name one.
- Neutrality (again, note the wikilink!) refers to the conveying of an opinion or viewpoint in Wikipedia's voice, either when an editor conveys his or her own opinion during the course of their edits, or when an editor chooses wording that is not as formal, dispassionate, restrained, journalistic or unbiased as it could be. This is in contrast to an opinion that is properly attributed to a reliable source that is relevant to the general topic of the article, and supported by a citation.
- The confidence that can be placed in a source, on the other hand, is Reliability, not neutrality. (Again, you can click on the wikilink to learn more about this policy. That's why we have wikilinks!) The fact that the information in question comes from Biggart's official site does not make it unreliable, any more than it makes it non-neutral or "dubious", since the information is not unduly self-serving, self-aggrandizing or promotional, and is not being used to support Biggart's notability. If you have a legitimate argument as to why the information on the official website is not reliable, then make it. Otherwise, please stop adding tags tendentiously to the article. Nightscream (talk) 20:27, 20 May 2013 (UTC)
- I believe that it is a legitimate argument to state that I can't find any other source that says such a thing happened. And I will never accept Bill Biggart's site as a reliable, neutral source. If you can find another source that says this, then I will not place the template again. It's as simple as that. Crtew (talk) 20:36, 20 May 2013 (UTC)
- I believe that it is a legitimate argument to state that I can't find any other source that says such a thing happened.
- And you would be wrong, since multiple sources, while welcome, are not obligatory.
- And I will never accept Bill Biggart's site as a reliable, neutral source.
- One more time: Sources do not have to be "neutral", and the very notion of a "neutral" source is questionable. What part of this are you having difficulty comprehending? Did the links above not make this clear, or do you simply reserve for yourself the exclusive privilege of ignoring them, because you think think policies and guidelines do not apply to you?
- You could have done that from the beginning instead of reverting
- And you could have simply read Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, including all the various ones you expressed ignorance of back in March, yet you didn't then, and you're still ignoring those policies now, even though I've again pointed them out to you. Why is this? Is clicking on a link too difficult for you? Nightscream (talk) 21:53, 20 May 2013 (UTC)

NPOV check
Hi! This is regarding 2013 Shahbag protests. So, how does the NPOV check occur? Who (or which group of editors) tends to do that? Does this NPOV check tag get listed in some noticeboard or talk page, so that experienced editors can do the check? Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 15:06, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

Hello. Regarding the recent revert you made to Amar Desh : you may already know about them, but you might find Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace useful. After a revert, these can be placed on the user's talk page to let them know you considered their edit inappropriate, and also direct new users towards the sandbox. They can also be used to give a stern warning to a vandal when they've been previously warned. Thank you. Toddst1 (talk) 23:12, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
Thank you for making a report about 123.49.27.128 (talk · contribs · block log) on Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. Reporting and removing vandalism is vital to the functioning of Wikipedia and all users are encouraged to revert, warn, and report vandalism. However, it appears that the editor you reported may not have engaged in vandalism, or the user was not sufficiently or appropriately warned. Please note there is a difference between vandalism and unhelpful or misguided edits made in good faith. If the user continues to vandalise after a recent final warning, please re-report it. Thank you. Toddst1 (talk) 23:14, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you for being so helpful on how I report incidents like this in a more effective way. I've been really impressed by the people at anti-vandalism and how you've been able to streamline the education of editors like me who haven't been active reporters and just do the occasional stray undo. Crtew (talk) 23:29, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
couple things.
Hey Chad, a couple things ...
- 1. The "motion for applause" comment was a reference to the "I applaud Kim" comment of yours. He often doesn't get the credit he deserves simply because he's so low key and un-controversial. The "motion" was kind of a snide thing about how bureaucratic and legalistic we get at times. So it was just my sense of humor, and I wanted Kim to know that you'd said something nice about him.
- 2. Going back to that "closed thread" thing, .. you don't have to be timid on the admin boards. In fact, a lot of times someone will even reopen a closed thread if they feel that it hasn't been resolved yet. It doesn't apply in this case, but you can also start a new sub-section below a closed section if it's related but a bit of a different topic. I only mention that because I don't recall seeing you on any of the admin. boards, and looks like you just mostly work on articles and such. (more people should do that, including me). To be honest, what caught my eye was where someone mentioned your name, and I thought maybe they meant me. That happens in real life too when someone says Chad, or Chet .. it catches my attention and I tend to respond with a "huh"? Anyway .,, keep up the good work, and thanks for all your efforts here. — Ched : ? 03:11, 12 March 2013 (UTC)

Murder of Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi
On my first pass, this article looks great; thanks a lot for all your work on it. I particularly like the context you offer. I flagged one quotation as needing an inline citation just so it wouldn't be missed. My only larger suggestion would be to integrate the section "Notable quotations/statements" into the rest of the text a bit more; it would be interesting to hear what the additional commentary on these statements was, how the statements fit into the investigation, etc. You might also mention in the lead section that it's unclear if the motive for the murders was the couple's journalism.
I can't remember off the top of my head how much experience you have with either area, but I'd say you should definitely nominate this one for WP:DYK, where it'll pass easily, and WP:GAN, where I think it should also pass, perhaps with a little tinkering. It's good stuff! -- Khazar2 (talk) 17:43, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
- Thank your for your thoughts on this! I really appreciate it that, and I'll move forward based on your advice about DYK and GAN.
- I've wanted to pass an idea by you for some time. How do you think we can get Wikipedia to participate in World Press Freedom Days every May 3? It would be great if journalists and press freedom could get some front page exposure on an international day of importance like that. It's not as radical a suggestion as going dark like Wikipedia did last year, but a suggestion that the front page have a theme that in line with the United Nations, Unesco, and all the other NGOs.Crtew (talk) 20:37, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
- That's an interesting idea. The main page editors try to feature FA status articles that have some relevance to the day so this is a distinct possibility. I suggest looking for a FA status article that is relevant to World Press Freedom Day and asking for that to be on the main page on May 3rd. --regentspark (comment) 20:50, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
- Yeah, good idea. If this passes DYK (and there's no reason to think it shouldn't), you can ask that it be held and run on that date. (Ditto for anything else that gets nominated in the meantime.) Finding an FA is also a good idea, but might be tough--it just depends on if there's anything appropriate that hasn't run before. If there's any way I can help with any of these processes, feel free to ping me! -- Khazar2 (talk) 21:14, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
- User:Crisco 1492 writes about journalism topics fairly often, and has a newspaper article up for DYK right now. More to the point, he's a leading admin in the DYK area. I don't know if you two have "met" before, but he's somebody you might talk to about main page journalism stuff for press freedom day. I opened a thread on his talk page about it under the header "Pembrita Betawi". You might also consider posting at Wikipedia:WikiProject Freedom of speech. -- Khazar2 (talk) 18:58, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

- Show me who is the copyright holder and then you might want to tell the Bangladesh courts, as they want to know who owns it more than we do. You're also forgetting about Fair Use. Crtew (talk) 10:16, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
- Leave the boring wili policy, lets think if I hacked your conversation with your friend (who is notable person) and publish that on your friend's wiki article, do you think that is Fair Use Mr. Human Rights teacher?--FreemesM (talk) 12:22, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
- There are other sides to this issue: Judge Huq is a public person and he is serving in a public capacity in a position of responsibility that deserves our scrutiny and full transparency. The issue is larger than Huq as justice is at issue. I realize that's not how things are done in Bangladesh as the court can clamp down on the republication of the videos inside Bangladesh. That's not the case elsewhere. You ask me to put myself in the place of Ziauddin. You might also put yourself in the place of the accused over whom Huq is ruling. Do you think what either Huq or Ziauddin did is fair to them? Interesting issues. Therefore, I disagree about boring Wiki issues, as Wikipedia is not here to cover up the foibles of public figures and these are issues appropriate for Request for Comment. The videos have been widely publicized, first by The Economist and Amar Desh, and then elsewhere, and they will never disappear, and they are not out of the scope of notability. If you believe copyright is truly the issue here, then you should take the matter up with YouTube.Crtew (talk) 12:49, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

re World Press Freedom Day
Cirt, I've been discussing with Khazar 2 and just started a discussion with Cisco 1492 about seeing if we could request that Wikipedia devote some space on the front page on 3 May about world press freedom and journalism as that is the day set aside annually for World Press Freedom Day. We just started talking at User talk:Crisco 1492#Pembrita_Betawi. Do you know some article under your project that would fit in DYK or in the Featured Article slot? Crtew (talk) 19:23, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
- Why don't you post a notice about this at WT:WikiProject Freedom of speech, and we can all discuss it centrally, there? — Cirt (talk) 19:25, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
You are trying to bury criticisms of Mahmudur Rahman
I'm shocked that you are trying to bury all criticisms of Mahmudur Rahman from this article with irrational news contents. This is the diff I am talking about. This doesn't assume WP:good faith.--FreemesM (talk) 17:35, 10 April 2013 (UTC)
- If you have nothing constructive to say, then please don't post to my page. I've ignored your accusations as you obviously are confusing the viewpoints of the subjects of articles with the editors who are trying to fairly portray their views. In my mind, that's your problem. WP is clear about editors citing the facts and not representing the facts they are writing about. You might want to review these policies as they are very basic. When you have something constructive to say, then you may post here. But if you continue to make these little outbursts, then I will report you. Crtew (talk) 22:46, 10 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi, is there a place where I can report a 3RR violation? Looking at the edit history of said user, he's quick to stomp on others for violating this policy but when it comes to him he's all about WP: ignore all rules. Given the fact that he's not giving other users a chance to edit and zeolously stirring up drama by nominating to delete well sourced articles, as well as acting uncivilised, I think dishing out some discipline is in order. Is there a place to report something like this quickly? I'd rather not go to ANI, as the user has a tendency to put up walls of beurocratic babble, to get his way by boring people to death. God forbid he becomes an afmin one day... 92.40.253.136 (talk) 09:33, 19 May 2013 (UTC)
I understand your points well, but you would have to go through WP:3RRNB as there is no bypassing it for some higher authority. You also might have a case against him for accusing you of following him without proof, which is a WP:Good Faith violation, but you seem to know how those outcomes turn out. The user has quite a long rap sheet at the ANI noticeboards, which is searchable, and quite a lot of enabling has been done in the past if you look through those records. Unless you've got a clear case, I wouldn't waste my time. Don't worry, he could NEVER become an admin with his past record. Crtew (talk) 09:41, 19 May 2013 (UTC)

I was reading you comments at VinoD Jose AFD! Excellent work there! See if anything from here help(s) you. Most probably you'll not get (m)ny detailed coverages on him, but, you might get multiple mentions of his works. --Tito Dutta (contact) 03:37, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

Recent reversions on Vinod Jose
I hope you will care to explain the rationale behind your recent reversions on Talk:Vinod Jose. The sources in question were removed from articles based on the definition of reliable sources as available in the content guideline page. There are several award winning journalists in the world, a few of them even have articles on Wikipedia. Yet their biographies do not begin with a qualifier that puts them in the category of "award-winning" in contrast to those who are not award-winning. — Nearly Headless Nick {c} 13:38, 22 May 2013 (UTC)
- You made a number of questionable edits (in good faith) but I dispute your reasoning. Your removal of valid trade publications as not reliable is something that I hope you learn more about. Trade journalism is an acceptable source and the journalists and editors who work in this area are typically experts in the subject matter. I'm amazed that you kept a newsletter but deleted any other pointer from it. Where I had included it and the source didn't provide the whole information, I had already included a citation needed template. This, in my opinion, was a mistaken edit on your part.Crtew (talk) 14:35, 22 May 2013 (UTC)
- Er, what? You are telling me that my edits were questionable? You were including peacock words ("award-winning journalist") and have extensively employed primary sources to write a puff piece. I am currently documenting the use of your sources on the AfD page. — Nearly Headless Nick {c} 12:51, 25 May 2013 (UTC)
- Very questionable. You introduced a factual error and you didn't write that an accused was acquitted. Those made my eyes pop! Good luck, Crtew (talk) 12:59, 25 May 2013 (UTC)
- Whether it is deleted or otherwise, I appreciate the effort that you have put into this. - Sitush (talk) 00:28, 28 May 2013 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for May 28
Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited List of films banned in the United Kingdom, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

DS
I have created a file here to serve as a repository of diffs linking to Darkness Shines' ill-conduct and disruptive editing pattern. Since he has been disruptive and continues to be so on multiple threads, it is impossible for any one person to follow him around. That's where I need your help. See, I don't usually edit those articles which you and DS edit. Thus, I encourage you to place any diff to potentially disruptive edit in that file. Will you help? Just sort it in any way you like. If you have any issues with my user space then I encourage you to use your own space but please keep records of those diffs; these will come in handy in case of a request for sanctions against him. I'm sorry, but even though he is a pain in the behind, I don't believe in keeping lists of such info on such a public space. Good luck, Crtew (talk) 21:30, 18 June 2013 (UTC)
DYK for Jacobo Timerman
On 26 June 2013, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Jacobo Timerman, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that lifetime Zionist Jacobo Timerman (pictured) survived arrest and torture in Argentina's Dirty War and reached Israel in 1979, only to return to Argentina five years later? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Jacobo Timerman. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and it will be added to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

Deletion discussions are not votes
My curiosity was aroused by your recent (June 21st) comment at [[:User talk:UnrepentantTaco#AfD voting pattern] ... nominating articles for deletion and then writing Delete in your nomination text. As nominator, you can't vote and so you should cease this practice in nominations .... My understanding is that deletion discussions are not votes, and that Afd discussions are closed by consensus. As Wikipedia:Articles for deletion#How an AfD discussion is closed says: Consensus is not based on a tally of votes, but on reasonable, logical, policy-based arguments. So only legitimate, rational arguments should be considered in assessing consensus. I thus see no problem with being clear in the nomination that deletion is requested. --Bejnar (talk) 15:33, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
