Some TemplateStyles comments
[edit]Just wanted to leave a few brief friendly comments regarding Template:Location map/styles.css and its implementation in the module.
- It would be good to move the styles page to a subpage of the module, since it is implemented in the module. I know there's some inconsistency in the rest of the stylesheets on wiki, but my assertion is that those should be in the most-pertinent namespace to the implementation. It's not the worst when the module and template are equivalently named, but it is still some inconsistency in the module itself. I know of at least one example offhand where a module implements a few templates yet uses a stylesheet that is a subpage to one of those only.
- The class names are mayyybe too short and/or non-specific. Most of the rules in the CSS page are appropriately scoped to the location map, but you'd be surprised what might happen with not-very specific names. (They also don't do a good job indicating just what is intended for each class i.e. aren't very semantic--I'm sure you can puzzle them out but a newbie to the module would take a while for it :D.)
- Not all the styles have been converted in the module itself. I see a few cases where we have to take the parameter from the template (noting a ticket on that point), but the rest might be nice to get out of the module and into the style sheet.
Let me know if you disagree. --Izno (talk) 23:07, 9 August 2020 (UTC)
- @Izno:
- I have no objection to it being there, but at the same time it doesn't really seem that important. I'll definitely create future CSS pages under modules, but I'm nervous about moving this one now since CSS doesn't support redirects, so depending on the job queue, a lot of pages may end up broken for a while, no matter which order I do things in (unless I were to do something awful like this: do a C&P move, update the module, then request a histmerge).
- The reason I made the stylesheet at all was to reduce the size of maps that have thousands of marks, such as Template:Syrian Civil War detailed map. I intentionally picked much shorter names than I normally would, since every 1 byte saved from the name is several kilobytes saved from that page, which was previously right up against its post-expand include size limit. As for being nonspecific, I made all of the styles be descendants of .locmap for that reason, so that even if another stylesheet did this trick, there still wouldn't be any conflicting styles. To help avoid confusing newbies, I could add comments in the CSS or Lua that explains what each one means, but I'd rather not require longer class names to be used in the HTML.
- Module:Location map basically has two different sections that emit HTML: The top and bottom functions, and the mark function. I think I moved every style that I can out of mark (let me know if you see any I missed). Since top and bottom are only called once for each map, they contribute a lot less to the page size than mark does, so it didn't seem as important to move them. If you think the consistency would be beneficial, though, I'd be happy to move them too (and I'd also be okay with those ones having longer names).
- Jackmcbarn (talk) 23:37, 9 August 2020 (UTC)
- I'm happy to perform Awful things. Just let me know. (I did just that for the main page stylesheet.) :)
- Yeah, I think we should generally avoid designing for the pathological case. Did you test these lengths at all, if that's what you were thinking about? Maintainable names are more important to me than a location map that some would probably argue shouldn't exist at all (and for more people, not in its current form). I'm happy to have a community discussion on this one if you don't really want to budge.
- Yeah, I'm a fan of consistency to be sure.
- --Izno (talk) 23:47, 9 August 2020 (UTC)
- Okay, that all sounds reasonable. I'll start on that and let you know when I'm ready for the histmerge. Side note: this is turning out to be quite complex because there's 12 different ways to do a location map (3 choices for caption: automatic (unset), none (blank), or manual (anything else), times 4 choices for border: default (unset or blank), no border outside of an infobox ("none"), inside of an infobox ("infobox"), or a custom color (anything else)), those choices aren't independent/orthogonal, and they all affect the structure of the DOM. Your opposition to Kyiv category renames
[edit]Hi you posted an opposition at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Speedy to renaming the Kyiv categories following the main article move but have not responded to other users arguing that the naming convention is now out of date and thus the oppose is invalid. Given widespread changes and reverts in this area it's important that the proper processes aren't stalled into deadlock and just encouraging users to resort to edit warring. Trysten Hill page
[edit]Hi Jackmcbarn,
I'm an infrequent editor of Wikipedia. I noticed you had reverted the Trysten Hill page back to before my edit. Wanted to let you know my intent was not to cause vandalism, and was just to reflect the national interest he had garnered as a relatively obscure NFL player beforehand. My edits were the sourced portion, not the vandalizing "dirty" edits.
I wanted to know if my initial edit on that page was at all inappropriate. As a novice editor, I did my best to source it appropriately and just want to make sure my initial edit was fine. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.49.50.243 (talk) 06:51, 29 September 2020 (UTC)

Mistake
[edit]Hello. I'm afraid you appear to have fallen for a nasty ploy by a disruptive editor. You acted on their request for page protection which was made in entirely bad faith. They alleged vandalism; there is no vandalism visible in the recent page history. Their request was targeted instead at some of my edits, which made a number of necessary improvements:
- The version this editor is aggressively trying to retain was badly formatted; see MOS:BOLD
- It also did not adequately introduce the topic, failing to mention who Shostokvich was or what he composed and instead describing only his scheme for numbering his works. That is not what the article is about.
- It was not grammatically correct: "were never bestowed opus numbers" is nonsensical as "bestowed" can only be used in the passive voice.
- It used oblique references to "the composer" instead of referring to them by name or pronoun
- It used his surname instead of using a pronoun, after the oblique references.
This editor has aggressively resisted any edits not made by him to the lead section, and has persistently misrepresented such edits. Last month they aggressively attacked someone for replacing the formerly completely inadequate lead section which consisted of the single sentence "This is a list of compositions by Dmitri Shostakovich". See the following examples of their persistent dishonesty in regards to these edits:
- Not to jump into this debate, but is there a reason for replicating the header from the composer's article here? - the lead section did not replicate the "header" (this user's personal terminology for what everyone else calls the lead section). It had simply adapted some text from it to properly introduce the list of Shostakovich's works.
- [1] - trashing another user's work entirely to restore the laughably inadequate "This is a list" lead, without any attempt at explanation.
- Changed header. Needs work, but is better than the copy+paste job from before. - there was no "copy+paste job" before.
- Once again reverting bad faith edit by banned sockpuppet account - no, my edit was obviously in good faith and it obviously improved the lead. The accusation of sockpuppetry is nonsensical.
- Reverted vandalism - no, my edit was not vandalism. WP:VAND and WP:NOTVAND are very clear about what is and is not vandalism.
- ...it would be helpful if you could please explain why this page needs to replicate the header from the composer's main article... - the page never did replicate the "header". The user has repeatedly claimed this despite it being so obviously false.
- This isn't a biography of Shostakovich. No other article listing the works of a particular composer lazily copies the header from the composer's main article. - misrepresentation and personal attack. Nobody "lazily copied" anything.
- You merely copied and pasted the header from the composer's main article onto this one. - yet again with this obviously false claim.
- [2] claimed "Disagreement over whether to write new header or reuse header from composer's main article." - nobody had ever suggested reusing the lead section from the composer's main article.
That is not a complete catalogue of this user's disruptive activities but I think it shows that they are willing to lie and misrepresent other users to get their own way. Their spurious request for page protection shows an escalating abuse of process.
I hope it is clear to you from this that you acting far too hastily in acceding to this user's demands. Misrepresenting another user's edits so flagrantly and persistently should result in some significant sanction, not in an administrator enabling and endorsing such a bad-faith approach. 109.144.218.180 (talk) 15:12, 29 September 2020 (UTC)
- For background, see Talk:List of compositions by Dmitri Shostakovich#Lead section. Sankura changed the lead by copying the first sentence and fourth paragraph from Dmitri Shostakovich. EW ensued. Multiple editors in the talk page discussion disagreed with Sankura's approach to the lead on the list article; then, Sankura received a CU block. Since that block, multiple IP editors have tried to renew the argument on the talk page but nobody else has engaged. Previous protection expired: an IP editor restored Sankura's preferred lead yesterday and was reverted. It's plausible that the various IP addresses are the same editor, and that the battle over the lead will continue whenever the page is unprotected. Schazjmd (talk) 15:31, 29 September 2020 (UTC)
- Okay...
- For anyone looking for the logs of what I did, I didn't protect List of compositions by Dmitri Shostakovich. I partially blocked Special:Contributions/109.144.0.0/16 from editing it.
- To be clear, 109.144.218.180, are you claiming that you're not the same person as Sankura? Right now, that seems suspicious, and if you are Sankura, then you're block-evading and all of your edits can be reverted on sight for that reason alone.
- @CurryTime7-24: Courtesy ping, since this involves you.
- Jackmcbarn (talk) 18:45, 29 September 2020 (UTC)
- As Schazjmd stated, Sankura edited the lead in List of compositions by Dmitri Shostakovich by largely incorporating the lead from Dmitri Shostakovich, including a couple of uncorrected factual errors. Their editorial remarks on their original edit admits that they utilized material from the latter, despite later denials. Initially, Sankura was fixated on Melodia for reverting their original edit, accusing them of being “frankly despicable.” I then chimed in on the matter, politely reminding them to please tone down their combative language, and letting Sankura know I actually agreed with their view that the page needed a new lead. But I also informed them that copying one from the composer’s main article, then pasting it into the article listing his compositions was not helpful. Several examples from other composition list articles were then provided to Sankura, not only as encouragement to write a lead appropriate for the article in question, but also to demonstrate that no other composition list article followed their approach. Additionally, I offered my help if needed. Sankura refused, or at least did not acknowledge it. Instead, they accused me of “breathtaking rudeness” and persisted in editing the lead according to their personal preferences, despite opposition from at least three other editors. Further discussion with Sankura was unhelpful. Instead of engaging with fellow editors in good faith, Sankura accused anybody of disagreeing with them of making “personal attacks” against them. I attempted requesting a third-party opinion, but Sankura repeatedly would erase what they claimed were my “dishonest” petitions for such. This user then began to harass me on my talk page with offensive language. As a last resort, I requested that an administrator please intervene, examine both our behaviors, and determine any solutions to move forward. Administrators decided to ban Sankura for sockpuppetry. An IP account began to continue the debate on this matter the following day, accusing all editors involved of “coordinated trolling.” Edit warring has continued, which is why I had requested that the article in question be semi-protected. Deletion question
[edit]Was the deletion of Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents/IncidentArchive1048 a mistake? I noticed the page link was red in the revision history of AN/I, so out of curiosity, I searched for one of the threads archived to the page in this edit. It doesn't seem to exist. Please take a look. Thanks, BlackcurrantTea (talk) 05:04, 14 October 2020 (UTC)
- @BlackcurrantTea: The link in the edit summary is wrong. The threads in question should actually be at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/IncidentArchive1048. Jackmcbarn (talk) 05:27, 14 October 2020 (UTC)
- Right, that makes sense. I missed the mistake in the page name. Thanks for the explanation. BlackcurrantTea (talk) 05:41, 14 October 2020 (UTC)

IP vandal
[edit]Hi, you blocked the 27.34.0.0/17 range from certain articles but disruptions and vandalisms from the range (by the same user) continue into different articles. Most contributions from the range are by the same vandal with little to no useful edit by others. Can you put a wider block on the range for all articles? Gotitbro (talk) 09:04, 25 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Gotitbro: The problem is that's a gigantic range. Your suggestion would keep a significant proportion of Nepal from editing the encyclopedia. Do you notice any other patterns we could use for a more arrowly.tailored approach, such as a new abuse filter? Jackmcbarn (talk) 16:06, 25 October 2020 (UTC)
- How about putting a lower level block on 27.34.22.0/24 and 27.34.50.0/23 or 27.34.0.0/18 which are currently being abused. Let's see how that goes. Not sure about abuse filters but the sockpuppeteer/vandal makes a lot of drive by lead/ib changes and category additions maybe these can be tagged from this range. [edit]New Page Patrol December Newsletter
[edit]Hello Jackmcbarn,
- Year in review
It has been a productive year for New Page Patrol as we've roughly cut the size of the New Page Patrol queue in half this year. We have been fortunate to have a lot of great work done by Rosguill who was the reviewer of the most pages and redirects this past year. Thanks and credit go to JTtheOG and Onel5969 who join Rosguill in repeating in the top 10 from last year. Thanks to John B123, Hughesdarren, and Mccapra who all got the NPR permission this year and joined the top 10. Also new to the top ten is DannyS712 bot III, programmed by DannyS712 which has helped to dramatically reduce the number of redirects that have needed human patrolling by patrolling certain types of redirects (e.g. for differences in accents) and by also patrolling editors who are on on the redirect whitelist.
Rank | Username | Num reviews | Log |
---|---|---|---|
1 | DannyS712 bot III (talk) | 67,552 | Patrol Page Curation |
2 | Rosguill (talk) | 63,821 | Patrol Page Curation |
3 | John B123 (talk) | 21,697 | Patrol Page Curation |
4 | Onel5969 (talk) | 19,879 | Patrol Page Curation |
5 | JTtheOG (talk) | 12,901 | Patrol Page Curation |
6 | Mcampany (talk) | 9,103 | Patrol Page Curation |
7 | DragonflySixtyseven (talk) | 6,401 | Patrol Page Curation |
8 | Mccapra (talk) | 4,918 | Patrol Page Curation |
9 | Hughesdarren (talk) | 4,520 | Patrol Page Curation |
10 | Utopes (talk) | 3,958 | Patrol Page Curation |
- Reviewer of the Year
John B123 has been named reviewer of the year for 2020. John has held the permission for just over 6 months and in that time has helped cut into the queue by reviewing more than 18,000 articles. His talk page shows his efforts to communicate with users, upholding NPP's goal of nurturing new users and quality over quantity.
- NPP Technical Achievement Award
As a special recognition and thank you DannyS712 has been awarded the first NPP Technical Achievement Award. His work programming the bot has helped us patrol redirects tremendously - more than 60,000 redirects this past year. This has been a large contribution to New Page Patrol and definitely is worthy of recognition.

You've been unsubscribed from the Feedback Request Service
[edit]Hi Jackmcbarn! You're receiving this notification because you were previously subscribed to the Feedback Request Service, but you haven't made any edits to the English Wikipedia in over six months.
In order to declutter the Feedback Request Service list, and to produce a greater chance of active users being randomly selected to receive invitations to contribute, you've been unsubscribed, along with all other users who have made no edits in six months.
You do not need to do anything about this - if you are happy to not receive Feedback Request Service messages, thank you very much for your contributions in the past, and this will be the last you hear from the service. If, however, you would like to resubscribe yourself, you can follow the below instructions to do so:
- Go to the Feedback Request Service page.
- Decide which categories are of interest to you, under the RfC and/or GA headings.
- Paste
{{Frs user|Jackmcbarn|limit}}
underneath the relevant heading(s), where limit is the maximum number of requests you wish to receive for that category per month. - Publish the page.
If you've just come back after a wikibreak and are seeing this message, welcome back! You can follow the above instructions to re-activate your subscription. Likewise, if this is an alternate account, please consider subscribing your main account in much the same way.
Note that if you had a rename and left your old name subscribed to the FRS, you may be receiving this message on your new username's talk page still. If so, make sure your new account name is subscribed to the FRS, using the same procedure mentioned above.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask on the Feedback Request Service talk page, or on the Feedback Request Service bot's operator's talk page. Thank you! Message delivered to you with love by Yapperbot :) | Is this wrong? Contact my bot operator. | Sent at 18:01, 26 July 2021 (UTC)

[edit]Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled
[edit]A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:06, 7 December 2021 (UTC)
Pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity
[edit]Established policy provides for removal of the administrative permissions of users who have not made any edits or logged actions in the preceding twelve months. Because you have been inactive, your administrative permissions will be removed if you do not return to activity within the next month.
Inactive administrators are encouraged to rejoin the project in earnest rather than to make token edits to avoid loss of administrative permissions. Resources and support for reengaging with the project are available at Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/administrators. If you do not intend to rejoin the project in the foreseeable future, please consider voluntarily resigning your administrative permissions by making a request at the bureaucrats' noticeboard.
Thank you for your past contributions to the project. — JJMC89 bot 00:02, 1 January 2022 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users
[edit]Hi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)
