Accounting Portal
Hi, have no idea where to suggest, but would any kind soul work on an Accounting Portal? I am surprised that there is none. =) It would be very useful for non-accountants to learn about accounting especially at times like this. Random featured portals
Hi. I stole. leveraged (also known as 'killed') the past 'portal of the month' entries from this page to set up display of a random featured portal at Wikipedia:Featured content. However, only about half the existing featured portals have been showcased as 'portal of the month' (or week prior to that) so far. Should we wait until each featured portal is showcased before adding it to the list of those randomly displayed on that page, pick out images for the remaining featured portals and add them now, or do something else entirely for portals on the featured content page? We used to show the full list, but it was getting too big and not as 'neat' as the other featured sections. --CBD 18:54, 19 September 2006 (UTC)
- I must be missing something, because I can't find any "display of a random featured portal." In any event, I wouldn't worry about what's been displayed here. If you still intend to do it, just pick the ones that work for your porposes there. Rfrisbietalk 03:37, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

Is Portal:list considered as the portal for Category:Portals?
?--Hillgentleman 07:50, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
- No. It isn't a portal, it's a list. Rfrisbietalk 12:10, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
- Then is there a portal for Category:Portals?Hillgentleman 02:18, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
- No, just this list and the guidelines page, Wikipedia:Portal. From Category:Portals, "A portal is a focus page which highlights a particular subject, to complement the main article on that subject. Portals feature articles covering the portal's theme, and generally provide lists of related articles, and thus provide an alternative means to browse on Wikipedia." Because portals focus on a specific topic, it doesn't make sense to create a portal of all portal topics. Rfrisbietalk 02:39, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
I added a portals navigation footer that shows how this relates to other general portal pages. Rfrisbietalk 15:05, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

Randomized featured portals here?
How about using the Wikipedia:Featured content/Portals page to randomly show featured portals here? I made a random featured portal test and it seems to work just fine. (In order to see it operate, you need to edit the test page, then "Show preview" to see the changes.) What do you think? Rfrisbietalk 16:23, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
- And lose the monthly? How will we get new featured portals? How about placing a random feature on the Wikipedia:Featured portals page instead? It doesn't have any graphics at all. The Transhumanist 18:26, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
- As Transhumanist notes, I've been taking the content for the 'random featured portal' from the 'portal of the month' images here. Still, it wouldn't be a big deal to just come up with an image for each portal as it is elevated to featured status and add it to the random list. I'm fine with whatever. --CBD 19:12, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
Replies to above comments: The box for displaying the "Monthly" isn't "lost," it's just updated every time the page is loaded. The "Portal of the Month" is just an arbitrary selection from the Featured portals list anyway. The process for selecting new featured portals isn't affected at all. The nomination process is described at Wikipedia:Featured portal candidates. The randomized displays for featured content appears at Wikipedia:Featured content. I already added all the remaining featured portals to Wikipedia:Featured content/Portals, the page that actually ramdomizes the display. Adding any new featured portals to this display page is a very simple process. I've already shown how straightforward linking them here would be. Rfrisbietalk 19:45, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
- I think that would be a good idea, having it change once a month (which didn't even happen that often a lot of the time anyway) stops a lot of the FP's from actually be recognised. Randomising it would make much more sense. chris_huh 19:53, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

- Looks very nice. The purge link right under the portal is a good addition as that's the only item on this page which changes. --CBD 10:55, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

Going for featured status
Now that this page has failed the featured list nomination, I would like some feedback here. The nomination was disqualified for two basic reasons. First, it wasn't in article space/was in portal space. The consensus was that it then must not be a "list"/must be a "portal." Second, it didn't have a references section. The only suggested addition was to an atlas that confirmed world geography.
The "not a list" issue resulted in two recommendations, submit it at featured portals or create a new "other featured content" process. IMHO, neither suggestion should be pursued. A more plausible remedy to the disqualifications would be to move the page to List of portals and add a references section. Then the nomination could be resubmitted to the featured list process and get another hearing.
Is anyone else interested in pursuing featured list status for this page? Rfrisbietalk 20:25, 11 November 2006 (UTC)
- I don't think it really belongs in mainspace (as "list of portals"). If anything, it would make more sense in projectspace, as its format and intent is nigh identical to Wikipedia:Categorical index. But, I'm also not sure it needs any kind of featured status, primarily because it's already linked very prominently on the Main Page, and so doesn't really need any extra "promoting". Sorry :(
- Ditto for the rest of the Contents pages, with the possible exception of List of academic disciplines which might be eligible as a featured list after a lot more work. The rest are too meta for me to think of them as articles. --Quiddity 20:45, 11 November 2006 (UTC)
- I see no point in pursuing featured status. It's a directory, not content.--cj | talk 07:48, 12 November 2006 (UTC)
Well, there's no point in spitting into the wind on this one. However, it is a mystery to me why "support" pages like this shouldn't be subject to the same types of quality considerations as "content" pages. Rfrisbietalk 23:09, 24 November 2006 (UTC)
- I suppose because they verge on meta-data.--cj | talk 09:44, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

Featured Portal stars
Anyone else feel the profusion of Featured Portal stars – though a good sign re quality! – detracts from the quality of this page...? Perhaps featured portals might be indicated by (say) italic or bold-italic typeface...? Regards, David Kernow (talk) 00:38, 8 December 2006 (UTC)
- I agree they're a bit much. I'll try bold-italics. Also, do you plan on doing anything about all the redirects and out-of-date page name references you created by moving the page? :-) Rfrisbietalk 02:26, 8 December 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for trying the bold-italics. I think the page has now lost that slightly overloaded feel, but (yes, but...) I'd sympathize if someone said the featured items are now too underplayed... Maybe each section's featured portals could be featured along the lines of the following (hopefully without overloading the page again), i.e. using a single FA-star...?:
In lieu of other ideas, though, I guess I'd prefer underplayed to overloaded.
Re redirects, I thought there were a few too many to update (semi-)manually, but if something/manything's broken, please provide pointer/s and I'll attend to it/them. (Alternatively, I suppose I could try post a request here...)
Yours, David (talk) 13:40, 8 December 2006 (UTC)
- Considering the FP box in the upper right-hand corner has a link to the FP page, I think understatement here is just fine. I'd support the bot request too, but changing things like page & template titles probably has to be done manually. Rfrisbietalk 13:59, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

Curiosity
Out of my own curiosity, where can I find info about how often the portal namespace is frequented? It seems to me that the namespace if not visited too often by too many people, as they are not publicized a lot. Anyway, I just wanted to know the popularity of the pages in this namespace. Thanks. → JARED (t) 02:27, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
- Wikicharts gives an approximate hit count for pages in the Portal namespace for the current and recent months. The major subject portals and the List of portals are linked from the main page, at the top, next to the "Welcome to Wikipedia".-gadfium 02:56, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
Idea for Portals
The Dutch wikipedia has some cool photographs at the top of all their portal pages. Any chance the english version could have these. I don't have the expertise to do something this compicated. This adress gives an example of what I am talking about. http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portaal:Kunst_%26_Cultuur Gollum45 17:03, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
- They seem to use images consisting of several photos joined together, with the portal name superimposed on top. It's certainly a possibility for this project – though it would require a consensus that changing the layout of the portal to improve it is a good idea, for some of the more popular portals. I'm not sure where best to find someone with the skills to do these images, though; I guess you could ask at Wikipedia:Requested pictures – Qxz 20:47, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

Coorodination b/w portal catagories here & on main page
The major portal categories here ("Arts and Culture", "Current events", "Geography", "Health", "History", "Natural sciences and Mathematics", "Philosophy, Religion, and Spirituality", "Social sciences and Society", and "Technology") do not exactly correspond with those listed on the main page ("Arts", "Biography", "Geography", "History", "Mathematics", "Science", "Society", "Technology"), but there doesn't seem to be any logical reason for this to be the case. I'd propose coordinating the two, or at least adding "Health" and "Philosophy & Religion" to the main page, and perhaps "biography" to this one. - The world of Monty Python my be big enough, but the real question is: is there enough Python content on Wikipedia to warrant a Portal? Looking at Category:Monty Python and its sub-cats, I count about 200 articles, 1/3 of which are sketches. I don't know if that's enough. LGBT, I think, should be spelled out as LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) as the acronym is not universal (presented elsewhere as GLBT LGB, LGBTI, LGBTQ) so many (most?) looking for the information are unlikely to figure out that LGBT is the magic key to get to that portal. Coordinating Portal:Contents pages
- See Wikipedia:Portal peer review/Contents/archive1 for the discussion on the new page format..
A group of editors is working on coordinating Portal:Contents and all of its subpages. This activity has two basic parts. The simplest part is to coordinate their presentation, such as page layouts. Most of the discussions about how to accomplish this are at Portal talk:Contents. The more involved part is to coordinate their substance, such as what gets linked from the pages and their classifications. Most of the discussions about how to accomplish this are at Wikipedia:WikiProject Contents and related projects such as Wikipedia:WikiProject Lists of basic topics, Wikipedia:WikiProject Lists of topics, Wikipedia:WikiProject Glossaries, Wikipedia:WikiProject Portals and Wikipedia:WikiProject Categories. Please feel free to join in on these activities. RichardF (talk) 12:48, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I am looking for items on Quantum Physics - what a mind blowing study! Have several theories but can't find any chat or info.
My main theory is that each partical in our Harmony vibrates within a limit governed by the speed of light (within our Harmony). This way particals can be observed to be part of a wave (The two slot trick). If this is true, there may well be other harmonics of the speed of light. Time ahead may be elongated or compressed relative to time as we know it if we were able to enter another light harmonic.
Hay but I may be way off. I there is a chat portal on "Quantum Physics" please let me know.

Environment portal
How about an "Environment" portal? This could cover all topics related to the description/characterization, modeling/forecasting, exploitation, destruction and preservation/protection of the natural systems of our planet. This would include many areas of growing interest, such as global climate change, global dimming, biological diversity, urban sprawl, air, water, soil, sound and light pollution, etc. There are many Wikipedia articles that would be relevant, though many or even most of them would not show up in a search for the word "environment" or "environmental." I am really surprised this is not a "featured" portal, and more surprised not to find it in the list of portals.

Placement of portals, cleanup
I propose that we place the articles in a way that is more in line with what most other classification systems already have: Universal Decimal Classification, Library of Congress Classification, Dewey Decimal Classification.
- Generalities
- Philosophy and Psychology
- Religion and Theology
- Geography (large enough to require its own space here -- although maybe countries should be place on their own page and just have continents here.
- History, Auxillary history, political science
- Music, fine arts, entertainment
- Language and Literature
- Science, Medicine
- Technology and applied science
Here are some issues that I see:
- Literature belongs in its own section, not arts and society.
- The and belongs in Social Sciences under family life (sex life). This is where LLC puts it. Or put it under People and Self since that category already has something related to it. Although all of the parts about "self" seem to be sociology issues or philosophy issues.
- Current events science and technology should go under science and technology
- current events sports should go under sports.
- Science should be combined with Mathematics to be called "Science and Mathematics". You can't understand science without understanding mathematics.
- Political science goes under history, since most history is related to political science.
- History belongs in history
- Geography belongs in Geography
- Freemasonary belongs in society organizations.
- Boy Scouts belongs in society organizations
- Military science is applied science and technology
- The society and arts category should probably be called Arts and Entertainment.
Since I am not allowed to edit this page, I will leave it up to somebody else to correct these issues. There is no point to reinvent the wheel when most standard classification systems use the same breakup. They just use different codes to indicate them.
I also think that we should assign a 3 letter code to each portal that is unique to that portal. The first letter should be the main category it belongs to. The next two letters are for the portal itself.
Since DDC and UDC both use beginning numbers, they only have 10 main categories. LLC uses alphabetic, so they have 26 main categories (not all of them in current use) and then a second letter in each sub category. After that are numbers in ranges.

Hi I created portal about Soft Rock genre of music (it's still under construction), but I'm starting to think about renaming it to Pop Rock, because this term is broader. In the other hand pop rock is a silly name, and not saying anything, and in fact one can argue what the pop rock really is, whilst Soft Rock as an opposite to the Hard Rock has rather clear description, it's a light genre of mainstream rock music.
Please give me some opinion whether should I leave Soft Rock name, or replace whole portal with a Pop Rock.

Portal needs improvement
This portal is viewed 200,000 times a month, yet is in pretty bad shape. Many issues have been discussed presviously (see talk page archives above) however some persist:
- no clear order: there is a lack of consistency in the grouping and ordering of the lists. It is a bizarre mix of thematic and alphabetic order;
- poor visual appearance: colour scheme, symbols, flags clutter etc. Have a look to german interwiki page for comparison German Wikipedia Portals
Some suggestions:
- Sports and Games doesn't fit verry well into Culture and the Arts. could be moved to Health and Fitness or form a separate section;
- Architecture is more than just Visual arts; could be separate sub-category; while Film is more a visual art than a performin art.
- The sciences: Mathematics and logic, Natural and physical sciences and Technology and applied sciences could be grouped somehow together. Elekhh (talk) 06:00, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
As per comments above I changed the icons from the Nuvola style [1] to the P_icon style [2]. I thought the improvement would be obvious to anybody: P_ style is visually coherent and provides wikipedia a more professional look. However the changes (in the template) were reverted by Quiddity requesting discussion. I still support P_icons. Elekhh (talk) 00:46, 22 October 2009 (UTC)
- The template Portal:Contents/Types TOC and its icons, are used in ALL of the pages listed in {{Contents pages (header bar)}}. Hence it would need to be discussed/mentioned at all of those pages, before any changes are made. (The parent wikiproject is ostensibly Wikipedia:WikiProject Contents, but I don't think there are more than 3 people watching it currently.)
- The same goes for any major resorting: The 12 section headings (eg "Mathematics and logic") are currently consistent across all these content portals. Sorting the contents within each section is perfectly fine, but changing the actual headings around is much more complicated. -- Quiddity (talk) 02:11, 22 October 2009 (UTC)
Icons
I'm proposing replacing the icons in the TOC with a visually more cohesive style. As these icons appear on multiple pages, please go to Portal talk:Contents/Types TOC to see and discuss this proposal. Elekhh (talk) 02:50, 22 October 2009 (UTC)

The existence of this portal is a discussed subject (see the discussion section on the Cannabis portal page). Also, Cannabis is a subject which reaches far more beyond Health and fitness. The Maclean Brothers
The MacLean Brothers are a rising Canadian rock quartet formed in 2008 by Paul, Travis, and David MacLean (sons of the late, popular musical comedy duo MacLean & MacLean) with singer/songwriter Michael Vermeylen.
The band is currently based out of Winnipeg, Canada, where they have earned the reputation of packing clubs to capacity.
In March/April 2010 the band embarked on their first Asian tour performing in Japan and South Korea where they were featured in a full photo shoot spread for the Korean pop culture magazine “Groove Korea”.
In January 2010, Michael Vermeylen, the group’s frontman, recorded a music video for Kab TV entitled Brand New World which is now in regular rotation on Channel 66 in Israel.
The band has shared the stage with Guess Who frontman, Burton Cummings, who is slated to collaborate with the group’s three brothers in an upcoming musical project entitled “M3C”.
The MacLean Brothers are currently working on an EP produced by Chris Burke-Gaffney of The Pumps and CBG Artist development (whose former clients include multi-platinum artist Chantal Kreviazuk and Mcmaster & James) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.77.234.214 (talk) 04:01, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
Introduction is too far down the page; portals as a better alternative to "random article"
I think the introduction to portals should come first on the page, instead of starting with a slightly off-putting list of links that takes up half the page.
Also, that introduction as it stands does not mention an exciting new use case of portals, more important than serving as an introduction and editing help: They can act much like the "random article" button, but with more control about the topic covered. The "random article" link seems to be surprisingly popular among readers of WP who are just bored, so pointing them to portals as a better alternative might make sense.
To back up my point, I'm quoting from a blog[3] that shows the problem with lacking awareness of portals:
- It was my intention to base my posts off of the first random article generated by Wikipedia. But some of them are maybe a little too random. To demonstrate, I am going to write down the subjects of the next ten articles I find:
- (...)
- None of those subjects really stood out to me as something I would like to dedicate a post to. Perhaps I'll record things that I'm interested in and would like to research anyway. I imagine much of it will be nutrition/health related...
So the above guy obviously did not find the Health and fitness portal! I don't know if the usability study has looked at awareness of portals among readers, but I think they are missed easily because the links are in the header ("Welcome the Wikipedia") where most people probably ignore them.
Perhaps the main page needs a "Still bored?" link after the dynamic content boxes with added suggestions such as portals. --Morn (talk) 13:03, 15 October 2010 (UTC)
how old is "traditional"?
Can anyone tell me ... how old does a recipe (or anything else come to think of it) have to be to attain the title "traditional"?
I only ask as I've been looking at potatoe recipes recently and found plenty from europe that have contained "traditional" in the title or discription. which made me wonder as obviously potatoes are not of european origins. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.159.20.228 (talk) 20:45, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

Bahá'í has no Indian roots, and what is "Abrahamic"?
I'm sorry, but the Bahá'í faith is no way a religion that have or refer to both Abrahamic and Indian sources. Bahá'í emerged from Shia Islam in Iran. In the beginning of the 19th century a Shia sect called Shaykhism was waiting for the promised one. In 1844 a young merchant i Shiraz in Iran declared that he was the gate to a new belief system enjoined by God. He took the name Báb (portal, gate) and the Bábí faith magnetized tens of thousands Iranians. After Báb's martyr death Bahá'u'lláh reshaped the Bábí faith to the Bahá'í faith, mainly when he was expatriated to Adrianople (1863-1868) in the European part of the Ottoman Empire. Bahá'u'lláh's son 'Abdu'l-Bahá traveled 1912-1913 to Europe and USA to spread the Bahá'í faith. Disciples spread the new religion to countries as India, and many bahá'ís also escaped from Iran to India. But India did not take part in the development of the Bahá'í faith. The only connection to India is that 'Abdu'l-Bahá identified Buddha and Krishna as messengers from God together with Zoroaster, Moses, Jesus, Muhammad, Báb and Bahá'u'lláh. Bahá'í has no Indian sources and I find the concept "Abrahamic" nonscientific.
There are a lot of Bahá'í believers in India, but this followers has not participated in building the Bahá'í belief system. Bahá'í has its sources in 1) Iran 1844-1852, 2) Iraq (Baghdad area) 1852-1863, 3) Adrianople (Edirne) in the European part of Osmanic Empire 1963-1868, 4) Acre and Haifa in the Levant part of Osmanic Empire and later British Palestine and Israel 1868-today, and in Europe and USA together with the world center in Acre/Haifa from 1900 – today. --Caspiax (talk) 14:33, 12 June 2011 (UTC)

It breaks down to micro-managed detail some "hard" topics, showing, for instance, Mathematics at the top of the page, but not a hint at any kind of performing arts or fine arts, which are relegated to a ghetto below the TopPage textbox. What I suggest is that the text box at the top have a least one link to the arts, even though there is a textbox for culture below it. Just, (yawn) MHO...(GeoBardRap 20:14, 22 July 2011 (UTC)

Outdated
This page is pretty outdated, as it is listing 1126 portals, and I have over 1300 listed at User:Sven Manguard/List of Portals, which was done using a namespace search.
My proposal is that we scratch this page entirely in favor of a dynamically generated page. Portals can be divided into sections using categories (likely purpose-built hidden maintenance categories to avoid compliations). Marking portals as featured can be handled by cross checking with Category:Featured portals.
Thoughts? Sven Manguard Wha? 20:43, 11 October 2013 (UTC)
- As far as I know, this page is not supposed to list all things in portal space, just those sufficiently constructed to be ready for viewers, which might explain some of the discrepancy. If an automated system were used then an opt-out/in code would have to be used. Also, some portals should be listed under multiple sections. Espresso Addict (talk) 18:12, 29 October 2013 (UTC)
- I don't really think that's what happened. I think it simply stopped being updated regularly. If what we want is a showcase of portals, perhaps we can just pick 200 or so that are on major topics and do that. But that's not what this page appears to be trying to do. Sven Manguard Wha? 21:26, 29 October 2013 (UTC)
- Espresso Addict has it correct. I've been watching and helping to maintain these pages since 2006, and can tell you for certain that they are only intended for reasonably-complete portals - incomplete/abandoned/broken portals are removed, following the same criteria as Wikipedia:Portal/Directory.
- I think the review & analysis that you've started at User:Sven Manguard/List of Portals is a really good idea. I'd suggest moving it to Wikipedia:Portal/List of Portals to encourage more people to help out, and maintain it continuously.
- Regarding the idea of just dynamically creating a list - that would make it too easy to avoid editorial scrutiny, because category-changes are very difficult to watchlist. –Quiddity (talk) 03:46, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
- I agree with Quiddity's idea of moving Sven's list of portals to somewhere centralised where other editors can help out. I've wondered about a coordinated review of featured portals; I know Bencherlite was working on one in userspace, but I've lost the link. Espresso Addict (talk) 19:24, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
- You all should feel free to take a copy, either the one I started or a clean one (go back in the edit history to get a clean one if you want), and move it to a centralized page. List of Portals isn't really my priority right now, List of Featured Portals is the priority, and that one I need to do myself. I'd be glad to help out with the list of all portals once I finish getting through the featured ones and seeing which ones need saving and which ones need delisting. Sven Manguard Wha? 17:30, 31 October 2013 (UTC)
- Interested in what you're doing with the featured portals and agree they are a more-urgent priority. I do think it might be more politic to do the review as a group effort, with agreed criteria, like the Good article sweeps of a few years back. I know Bencherlite was doing something similar a while back. Espresso Addict (talk) 18:14, 31 October 2013 (UTC)
- I've been doing it myself because there are very few people that would be as careful/harsh as I am in doing the reviews, and I want to catch everything so that we have a very good grasp of where we stand before we consider the main page. That being said, you've got recent experience with the standards (which are much tighter than they were when many of these portals were promoted). If you think you can be as aggressive/pedantic in the reviews as I am being, feel free to help out. Sven Manguard Wha? 05:51, 1 November 2013 (UTC)

Bullets or commas?
This portal and its subpages should have a consistent format. Should links be separated by bullets or commas? RockMagnetist(talk) 17:02, 24 April 2018 (UTC)
While we're at it, there should also be a consistent convention about formatting of headings. When should they be on a separate line from the links? And should they ever be linked themselves? RockMagnetist(talk) 17:02, 24 April 2018 (UTC)
- It is consistent. The commas are used within parentheses, and the parentheses indicated another level down the hierarchy. For example, in the regional sections, cities of a country are in parentheses, separated by commas. This allows cities to be included in a list of countries. The commas make it easier to visually discern a parenthetical grouping. It is the standard used across all the Portal:Contents pages. — The Transhumanist 23:15, 29 April 2018 (UTC)
- O.k., that explains a lot of the formatting, but (for example) Portal:Contents/Portals/Culture and the arts doesn't follow that scheme. RockMagnetist(talk) 15:06, 30 April 2018 (UTC)
These are not listed yet
Each item in this list needs to be processed as explained below. Please do as many as you have time for. Every little bit helps...
First, look at a portal on the list, and inspect it to see if it is completed. Most incomplete portals have one or more empty sections that have nothing more than a red subpage link in the middle of them.
If a portal is not complete, either complete it, or mark the entry " Not ready" with the {{Not ready}} template. That will let others know it needs work.
If an entry below is a completed portal, add it to Portal:Contents/Portals. After you've added it, please mark that entry below as " Done", using the {{done}} template.
Also use this list to update the Category:Portals under construction. To do so, add that category to the "Not ready" portals.
Thank you.
These (the unmarked ones on the uppermost list above) are missing from the adjacent page, and need to be added there. All help is appreciated. Mark each as Done after it is inserted. Thank you. — The Transhumanist 08:42, 14 April 2018 (UTC)
- I wasn't sure what to do about Portal:Human, which is a disambiguation page. Should there be such things in portal space? RockMagnetist(talk) 18:32, 24 April 2018 (UTC)
- It is best not to list non-portals as portals. The disambiguation pages don't hurt anything if they are not listed. — The Transhumanist 23:21, 29 April 2018 (UTC)

In the history section, I wonder if this would be better listed under War than under History by region - (other portals like Portal:Military history of Africa are in the latter group). Dunarc (talk) 22:47, 16 May 2018 (UTC)

Should be Portal:Contents/Portals be replaced with the layout at Portal:Contents/Portals (new)?

- Important note: It is good to take the initiative, and I hope that you keep doing so. The current community consensus is that this page is part of a set of navigation pages, each page sharing the same formatting. To change the formatting of this page, you need to establish a new consensus to change the formatting of the set (such as having a new standard design, or different designs for each or any of the pages). The members of the set are Portal:Contents/Overviews, Portal:Contents/Outlines, Portal:Contents/Lists, Portal:Contents/Portals, Portal:Contents/Glossaries, Portal:Contents/Categories, and Portal:Contents/Indices. This discussion is fine, as long as it is announced to the wider community, such as at Portal talk:Contents, the talk pages of all the pages included in the set, the talk pages of their corresponding WikiProjects, the CBB, and Wikipedia:Centralized discussion. If the format of this page is changed without proper notification of this discussion to the wider community, someone will likely be shocked by the mismatch and quickly revert it, pointing out that the prior wider consensus still stands. Just a heads up. Keep up the innovation! — The Transhumanist 21:42, 24 May 2018 (UTC)
- Closing I originally planned just to change the layout of [[this one page, to something along the lines of my proposed new layout, which includes design features that have been generally mentioned here and there. However some people have expressed concerns about the design which lead me to consider that additional "wishlist" input could be beneficial. Check out this mockup, an improved design does not have to be this improved design. Additionally I was not aware initially that it would necessary to redesign the entire layout of Portal:Contents, which is understandably a bigger job, which I have not yet prepared anything for. Therefore I will quickly close this RfC and open another one on Portal talk:Contents to get design input. JLJ001 (talk) 14:11, 25 May 2018 (UTC)
Survey
- Support This layout change serves to benefit navigation for users. In essence it's a visually improved, and highly functional TOC; as such i think WP:BOLD would have covered implementing it. As a proposal i'm happy to support it. Cesdeva (talk) 17:37, 23 May 2018 (UTC)
- Oppose - I prefer the old layout, which is more cohesive as a whole and has a top matter that is less gawdy. — Godsy (TALKCONT) 17:51, 23 May 2018 (UTC)
- Support This layout is great.--Broter (talk) 18:58, 24 May 2018 (UTC)
Discussion
- Perhaps a quick summary of the changes and the provided benefits is in order? Just for the record, I like the new one. — AfroThundr (talk) 16:59, 23 May 2018 (UTC)
- Short explanation is that it's exactly the same except the icons at the top are now really big.
- Everything works exactly as before, even the icons are using the same pictures, so for editors there is no change. For readers it is more accessible. The advantage of this layout is that people can easily see the options, rather like the home screen of any modern OS. This is to improve usability, and hopefully get more people to continue on to visit a portal rather than getting bored and clicking away. JLJ001 (talk) 19:38, 23 May 2018 (UTC)
fine tunning "Religion and belief systems" portal section
Under major headings of Abrahamic religions, Non-Abrahamic religions, Other and Non Religion or Belief there is some inconsistenty compared with Portal:Contents/Religion_and_belief_systems and Abrahamic religions. The Bábism and Bahá'í Faith religions are linked as "Religions with West Asian origin" with Zoroastrianism. Both are more often linked as Abrahamic though in some definitions they transcend the traditional boundaries of Abrahamic (more specifically the Baha'i Faith since it explicitly accepts the divine origin of Buddhism, Hinduism, and Zoroastrianism and there is some case for accepting individuals from Native American religious history.) Thoughts? Smkolins (talk) 12:10, 30 May 2018 (UTC)
- @Smkolins: Good spot. I'd say we should obliterate the 'West Asian origin' section; it's a rather odd grouping. Then merge Bahai and Babism into Abrahamic, and put ZA into 'other religions'. Cesdeva (talk) 19:05, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
