MPOGD cite on Furcadia

[edit]

Are you sure it's a republished press release from DEP? It does read like a press release, but MPOGD may have fact-checked Dr. Cat's "first MMO to be online for 10 years continuously" claim, and put it forth with their own seal of approval. Perhaps I'm giving them too much credit, though.... -kotra (talk) 02:46, 10 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. See the (window) title of this page, and compare the text. GreenReaper (talk) 03:06, 10 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I've adjusted the citation accordingly. Tsk. The lack of non-DEP-written sources are a problem. I wonder if I should send an email to DEP asking if they know of any news articles or such about Furcadia. Given their well-known lack of response to emails and my ...hazardous relationship with them, it's probably a lost cause, but.... -kotra (talk) 03:16, 10 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Per comments made here, could you please leave a time stamp on your post at WP:RB, and I am undoing your edit to the top of WP:RB, also per the comments made at WT:RB. Thank you. Griffinofwales2 (talk) 16:11, 19 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There is already a timestamp in the page history. I refuse to add another one. You are trying to make the process needlessly bureaucratic. GreenReaper (talk) 16:51, 19 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki-Conference New York Update: 3 weeks to go

[edit]

For those of you who signed up early, Wiki-Conference New York has been confirmed for the weekend of July 25-26 at New York University, and we have Jimmy Wales signed on as a keynote speaker.

There's still plenty of time to join a panel, or to propose a lightning talk or an open space session. Register for the Wiki-Conference here. And sign up here for on-wiki notification. All are invited!

Wiki-Conference New York panel

[edit]

We have moved your "Barnraisings and cross-wiki collaborations" panel from slot B-3 on Sunday to slot B-2 on Saturday, to avoid a scheduling conflict. Thanks!--Pharos (talk) 17:27, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

BTW, it would also be good if you folks could make some preparations among yourselves about how best to work together on the panel. I'll be sending you all an e-mail on this soon.--Pharos (talk) 17:30, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

DYK nomination of T.H.E. Fox

[edit]

Hello! Your submission of T.H.E. Fox at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and there still are some issues that may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! Materialscientist (talk) 11:03, 20 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks!

Yes indeed! This is a furry snail! See periostracum

Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed being on the Panel with you at the Conference, and to thank you, not only for your excellent talk, which was a perfect lead-in to Clockworksoul's talk and mine, but also for being so considerate about cueing up our talks and so on. It was great to meet you. If you live in this general area, as you may have seen, I can get you into any museum for free, so let me know if that would be helpful sometime. Oh and if that was your camera, I would love a copy of the photo of us three. Best, Invertzoo (talk) 22:29, 26 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I had a nice time too - I felt the talks and the questions together were very informative. And here's the photo. I think it came out well! :-)
I live over in Detroit, but if I return at some point, perhaps I could take you up on that offer. Either way, good luck with your projects, both on- and off-wiki. GreenReaper (talk) 02:33, 27 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Great to meet you!

[edit]

It was great to finally meet you in person. Best of luck with your pursuits, Furry and otherwise! - ClockworkSoul 18:25, 27 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Likewise - and I'm sure they'll go just fine. :-) GreenReaper (talk) 19:00, 27 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for T.H.E. Fox

[edit]
Updated DYK query On July 31, 2009, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article T.H.E. Fox, which you created or substantially expanded. You are welcome to check how many hits your article got while on the front page (here's how) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Hi GreenReaper, Just wanted to let you know that in a thrift store in California (visiting my in-laws) I bought myself a pair of apple-green jeans, and also another hoodie, a green tropical patterned one. I enjoyed my green outfit so much at the conference, and your appreciation of my being in green helped make me realize even more how great it really is. So thanks for the inspiration. Say hello to your avatar for me, Invertzoo (talk) 15:46, 17 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

*grins* - well, I'll be wearing green myself for the next five days, as I'm flying to RainFurrest in a couple of hours. I'll be sure to let him know once I unpack him from the overhead compartment . . . GreenReaper (talk) 19:28, 17 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Skin

[edit]

Hello,

I'm in charge of a regiowiki called Wiki-Brest, I'm looking for a skin to make more attract the wiki.

I searched to the net on these websites :

Could you help me to find beautiful and ergonomic skins ?

Maybe you know some companies which could develop skins.

Thanks you. Sorry for my bad english, i'm french Filyg (talk) 12:13, 28 October 2009 (UTC) contact @ wiki-brest.net[reply]

I may not be the best adviser for custom skins, as I campaigned for our host (Wikia) to keep the Monobook skin, and even moved a wiki to its own hosting because it was being removed. But still . . .
Firstly, MediaWiki is adding a new standard skin called Vector, which you can try on the English Wikipedia (and possibly the French one). It is not ready yet, but it will probably be in the next major release of the software in a few months. If you like it, perhaps that would be sufficient. See http://usability.wikimedia.org/ for more details.
On the gallery of user styles page, there are many skins available for download. Some *are* full skins, but these are packaged in zip files or on other sites. I do not think PHP is an enabled file format on the wiki.
Many of the skins are CSS modifications of Monobook. This may be good, as Monobook is likely to be updated with new features, and a modification of it is less likely to break with new versions. If you wish to try these, you can put the CSS in the MediaWiki:Monobook.css page on your wiki, or upload the file somewhere and @import it from there. You could also copy Monobook under a new name and override that instead.
Some sites have made or modified their own skins, for example tfwiki.net and aboutus.org. If you like what they did, perhaps they could give or sell you a copy. If you want to make your own, you could try this book.
You could also try asking on the Wikipedia IRC channel or MediaWiki and WikiTech mailing lists. GreenReaper (talk) 14:31, 28 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Merge discussion

[edit]

I closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Thomas K. Dye as merge. User:Barberio disputed this close and opened a deletion review, which was closed as the admin argued that merge closes are not considered at DRV. I merged the material to Newshounds and redirected the article; Barberio has reverted the redirect, though the material remains merged. A discussion on the merge is at Talk:Newshounds#Merge of Thomas K. Dye; your participation would be welcome. Fences&Windows 01:43, 3 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Conflicted licensing on image File:WindowFX drag out transition.gif

[edit]

The above noted image or media file appears to have conflicted licensing. As an image cannot be both 'free' and 'unfree', a check of the exact status of this media/image concerned is advised.Sfan00 IMG (talk) 14:53, 2 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes it can. It's not a complicated concept. Read the image description page. (Also, you got the image name wrong, I fixed it.) GreenReaper (talk) 20:21, 2 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Which means that the image as a whole has to be treated as non-free- IE, not be plastered in free content templates. J Milburn (talk) 20:31, 2 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
In fact, looking at the image, the background (the non-free part) is not important, and the main focus of the image is freely licensed. As such, the image should be recreated without the non-free components. J Milburn (talk) 20:33, 2 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Go right ahead. I spent far too much of my life getting that image onto Wikipedia in the first place for me to bother. GreenReaper (talk) 00:50, 3 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for File:Object Desktop 2 Logo.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Object Desktop 2 Logo.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 17:42, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

File:MidwestFurFest2005VarietyShowEnd.jpg missing description details

[edit]
Dear uploader: The media file you uploaded as File:MidwestFurFest2005VarietyShowEnd.jpg is missing a description and/or other details on its image description page. If possible, please add this information. This will help other editors to make better use of the image, and it will be more informative for readers.

If the information is not provided, the image may eventually be proposed for deletion, a situation which is not desirable, and which can easily be avoided.

If you have any questions please see Help:Image page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 17:59, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on File:TweakVista.png requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F9 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image appears to be a blatant copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted images or text borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Atomic Mouse issue 1.jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Atomic Mouse issue 1.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 18:09, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The deletion of File:TweakVista.png was incorrect. I had permission to upload the image under the stated license (which was later converted to include CC-BY-SA), and I did so in the correct manner. A message to OTRS is not required for those works which you yourself have created. Please undelete it.
Bear in mind that most of the other images were uploaded in 2005. At that time, a detailed fair-use image rationale was not required. All of the above messages were added in the space of a few minutes, a couple of hours ago. I cannot address them all at once, yet I still placed a hangon template on this image. It was apparently ignored. GreenReaper (talk) 20:14, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Cat reversions on MUCKs

[edit]

Seriously, in 2010 we're still doing the TinyParochialism where we don't want to be MUDs because MUDs are stupid kill-the-monster games? Come on. That isn't helping anybody, not with the way the community has evaporated. We have enough problems on Wikipedia without insisting on fragmenting ourselves for archaic reasons. If it helps, I can also produce reliable source citations spelling out that MUD is a generic, not anything implying combat or any other particular sort of game, and in fact encompasses "MU*" (counterintuitively, obviously). —chaos5023 (talk) 14:28, 14 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Then you should recategorize Category:MU* games under Category:MUD games rather than adding all members of that category to Category:MUD games. GreenReaper (talk) 17:42, 14 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, that seems pretty sensible. —chaos5023 (talk) 17:52, 14 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed that you have revised either Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri or Sid Meier's Alien Crossfire.

I intend to revise those articles following the Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Article guidelines. There are more details on the discussion pages of those articles. I'd be interested in any comments you have. It would be best if your comments were on the discussion pages of the two articles.

Thank you.

You are now a Reviewer

[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. MBisanz talk 02:11, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Template help

[edit]

I saw your hack for having a sortable template with {{Furry-con-list-start}} and {{Furry-con-list-entry}} with column spanning and wanted to know if you knew of a way to make the main column headings span and unsorotable while having secondary column headings sortable. I would like to use this with a visual novel listing currently at work on my page, but am running into issues with the sub headings. The desired format, minus the sortability, is on my userspace.Jinnai 06:11, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It didn't break the layout, but it did look very strange having both the infobox and TOC right-aligned. Feel free to change it back if you want. —Slicing (talk) 20:13, 1 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"Alphabetize" would have sufficed. It wasn't intuitively obvious to me that the entries were in alphabetical order rather than some sort of priority order, which I suppose is a failing on my part, but the failing wasn't that I don't know the order of the Latin alphabet. —chaos5023 (talk) 22:06, 4 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

MediaWikiAuth

[edit]

Hi There. I run a large wiki on Wikia, and we're considering a move back to being self-hosted. As you no doubt know, we can take the dump but not the user accounts. Obviously this is not just annoying for users who have to re-register, but dangerous as any randomer could register another users' account. The MediaWikiAuth extension would be absolutely great to help us deal with this. Even if we can't copy preferences, is there any chance we can get hold of the extension? Thanks - Gerardtalk 18:22, 6 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I have put a copy of the latest internal version of this extension here. Please note that it has not been tested with 1.16, or indeed outside WikiFur at all. It should work with the token changes introduced recently. I strongly suggest reading through the code to understand what it does. You will need a copy of Snoopy and configuration similar to the following:
 $wgMediaWikiAuthAPIURL = 'http://www.wikia.com/api.php';
 $wgMediaWikiAuthPrefsURL = 'http://www.wikia.com/wiki/Special:Preferences';
 require_once($IP.'/extensions/MediaWikiAuth/MediaWikiAuth.php');
 $wgAuth = new MediaWikiAuthPlugin();

GreenReaper (talk) 21:29, 6 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that - very nicely commented code (rare to see)! It seems to need a table to be set up - do you have the schema or sql for that handy? Gerardtalk 23:20, 6 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, local_users? It shouldn't be required since it also searches for past editors' names in the revision table, and probably isn't available to you anyway - we got a database dump which happened to have it in and used it as a shortcut - but here you go.
mysql> describe local_users;
+-------------+-----------------+------+-----+---------+-------+
| Field | Type | Null | Key | Default | Extra |
+-------------+-----------------+------+-----+---------+-------+
| user_name | varchar(255) | NO | PRI | | |
| user_id | int(5) unsigned | NO | UNI | 0 | |
| numgroups | bigint(21) | NO | | 0 | |
| singlegroup | char(16) | NO | | NULL | |
| rev_cnt | int(11) | NO | | 0 | |
+-------------+-----------------+------+-----+---------+-------+
Again, you could probably cut out the section that involves it and and it would work just fine - at least, for users who've actually made any contributions to the wiki. Or you could just have it try every username, and figure out some kind of cache (I strongly recommend not hammering their login servers with repeated failed logins). Just be careful; you don't want to run into a userid clash. GreenReaper (talk) 05:40, 7 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Your input is needed here. If you are not the person who does this, please let me know who to contact. Thanks. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 08:06, 14 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

From the look of it, the only change necessary from a developer perspective is the addition of the different notice for anonymous users, although it might be possible to handle this in script (or just use a combined message - don't see why you can't just say "you must be logged in, with an account at least X old with Y edits" to both groups). The Wikimedia IT people just need to change the configuration setting determining which user groups can create pages. You should probably file a bug (or two) along these lines, as this is how such changes are tracked and discussed. I'm not personally involved in Wikimedia's infrastructure - I'm too busy running WikiFur! :-) GreenReaper (talk) 19:15, 14 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Furry fandom

[edit]

hello. i understand your need to promote wikifur. however, a single sentence mention does not make it notable. there is an essay on this, but WP:GNG states that in general, a single sentence mention in insufficient to establish notability. :) -badmachine 19:42, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

As I explained elsewhere, Wikipedia's concept of notability relates to whether a subject should have its own article – not whether it should be mentioned in a section of an article about a wider topic, nor whether there should be a redirect to that section from the subject's name. Please read the guideline you are pointing at before trying to use it. GreenReaper (talk) 19:50, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination of List of furry conventions for deletion

[edit]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article List of furry conventions is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of furry conventions until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. Ridernyc (talk) 22:10, 4 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

RBW nomination

[edit]

RBW UK has been nominated for deletion. If we're going to save it, then we need more sources than just this Bizarre interview. Do you know of any other sources? SilverserenC 21:01, 9 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The only coverage that springs to mind is in Sugar (WikiFur), which merely identifies RBW (and ConFuzzled) as furry conventions. Personally, I am not convinced that RBW's article is justified. While it can claim to be the first "real" furry convention in the UK, it never had more than 300 attendees; others mentioned here are over 1000, and we don't have all of them. I think it is an excellent example of a convention which should be mentioned here, but not that prominently. GreenReaper (talk) 04:54, 13 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Talk:List of furry conventions

[edit]

Can you please respond at Talk:List of furry conventions? No one is going to agree with just allowing any convention in regardless, there has to be some lower limit of verifiability and notability. That's why my proposed "one reliable source discussing a convention" is the baseline of what we're going to get. SilverserenC 20:56, 12 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article DirectSkin has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Application doesn't meet the WP:GNG because there isn't significant coverage in reliable third party sources. A search shows only trivial mentions with basic descriptions, and nothing to establish notability.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
