Indefinite IPv6 hardblocks

[edit]

Hi, I think you might have indefinitely hardblocked a single IPv6 and the associated /64 by accident – do you mind if I lift these? They're both covered by a rangeblock on the /40. --Blablubbs (talk) 12:40, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Just a question

[edit]

Hey Oshwah, hope all is well, and thanks for responding to my email! A question; am I wrong here? Because for songs released as singles, every other disambiguation page I've looked at lists the release year of the single, and not the associated album. QuestFour (talk) 18:14, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi QuestFour! I don't recall that there's a specific policy that specifies that users should list the year of a song's release as a single instead of as an album. If there were, I'd think it would be detailed here, or in a subpage that's linked from there. If you find such a guideline that does state this (it most certainly wouldn't be a policy), then sure, peacefully inform the other party. Other than that, does it really matter that much? We're talking one year in difference. ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:22, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, I don't know, I feel like consistency should be considered here; I'l try hitting up Wikipedia:WikiProject Disambiguation for a wider community input. Thanks for replying! QuestFour (talk) 07:25, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
QuestFour - Of course; I'm always happy to help should you need it. Don't be a stranger! ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 08:28, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

There's a few issues with this block. From WP:UAAI:

  • Only report accounts with edits and do not report those with no edits in the preceding 2 weeks. Account has no edits, live or deleted, and has not tripped the filter log.
  • Promotional violations require substantive evidence. no edits=no evidence
  • Do not warn someone about their name and then immediately report them to UAA. The filp side of that is that we shouldn't block an account that has been warned but not had a chance to respond.

I'm not suggesting you unblock, but maybe keep these guidelines in mind in the future. It's a bit of work to keep reporting users at UAA following these rules, it doesn't really help when an admin doesn't follow them. Just Step Sideways from this world ..... today 18:54, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Just Step Sideways! Thanks for the message and for expressing your concerns. I didn't report anything; I simply soft-blocked the account based on their username. Violating Wikipedia's username policy can lead to an appropriate block. In my experience over the many years that I've patrolled and handled disruptive editing in all forms as well as hundreds of such accounts (I'm sure you have as well), I can say that they will nearly always only make promotional edits; that's usually what they're here for if they set a company name as their username. In effect, that to me is evidence! I obviously don't hard-block or threaten them, but what a soft block serves to do is send a clear message that (of course) their username is not allowed, but also that promotional editing isn't allowed - and if you wish, you can just go create a new account or have this one renamed, and you can edit. I think that appropriately strikes a balance between enforcing the policy and allowing the user to easily overcome the problem. I'm (as you know) always happy to discuss this further; just let me know and, pull up a chair, and I'll share a case of beer with you. :-) Again, I appreciate you for coming to me and for expressing your disagreement, and doing so peacefully. :-) Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:15, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Update: I've re-read the UPOL policy on promotional usernames, and I acknowledge that it does state that, "the user should be offered the opportunity to create a new account or have their current username changed". So yeah... you got me there... ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:27, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I realize you didn't report it, and were probably unaware that the user who issued the warning did report them, and further that I declined their report with the standard "wait until the user edits" response.
I agree that the most likely thing the account would have done had it made any edits would be to edit on behalf of a client, but for whatever reason many accounts are created every single day that never make a single edit, and reporting them is something we actively discourage at UAA (unless it's something really nasty or a blp violation). There's even a template, {{UAA-no edits}} for this very purpose. So, for me it is less about you being manifestly wrong in blocking them and more about being consistent with what users see admins doing in this regard.
I probably should've made all that clear in my initial post, it has been a long-term goal of mine to educate users on when to report and when not to. Reporting names with no edits is something we actively discourage at UAA (unless it's something really nasty or a blp violation), there's even a template, {{UAA-no edits}} for this very purpose. So, for me it is not about you being manifestly wrong in blocking them, it's more about being consistent with what users see admins doing in this regard.
And thanks for being your usual cordial self and not getting super defensive. One never knows when approaching a fellow admin how they are going to take such things, even when I try to be diplomatic about it,. Just Step Sideways from this world ..... today 04:28, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Just Step Sideways - OHHHHH! I got'cha now! Okay, I see exactly what you're saying... :-) Also, HOW DARE YOU THANK ME FOR BEING CORDIAL YOU SON OF A.... (just kidding). ;-) Users need to be cordial if they're going to earn full community respect on this project - full stop. It's not about being perfect, about being right, or even about holding user rights; it's about being personable and understanding to others - even if they dispute, disagree, or even become heated toward you. A huge part of earning legitimate respect from others is showing that you're open to publicly being held accountable for your actions. I strive to do the right thing, and there are times where I'm wrong and that I do not do so. I'd much rather have someone come directly to me and tell me if they have concerns in this regard than not to. It's easy to "talk the talk"; it's a rare diamond to see someone who "walks the walk". Thanks again for reaching out to me. Don't be a stranger! We have BBQs and beer regularly here! ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 05:00, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Just Step Sideways - Oh and also: one of the main points that I will take from this discussion is to check the user's talk page for UPOL warnings before I take action. I will learn from this and I will honor it. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 05:09, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Clearly I screwed up when trying to edit my comments and wound up repeating myself a bit. Not sure how I managed to miss that. Just Step Sideways from this world ..... today 17:59, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

July 2024 response

[edit]

You certainly made a mistake. I know that Usagi and Mamoru being bisexual is a common headcanon from fans. However, Naoko Takeuchi has never confirmed that's what their sexual orientations are. Also, I think she said all the Sailor Senshi (except for Uranus and Neptune) are Straight. I can't find the exact source. But, I have seen it mentioned elsewhere online by multiple fans. That's why I removed them from your List of animated series with LGBT characters: 1990-1994 article. Also, I already gave an edit summary to my changes. You must not have noticed it. I hope you'll understand. Thank you. 2600:1700:4D81:C050:2D4E:B165:996F:F6B6 (talk) 01:04, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! Your edit here concerned me because you had removed a bunch of content that had references and citations. I would advise you to take your concerns about the content to the article's talk page and start a discussion there. Please take care not to engage in edit warring; it's an easy trap for editors to fall into before they realize that they've done so. Good luck. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:49, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Suspicious behavior

[edit]

I saw this discussion at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Tropical_cyclones#Can_someone_confirm_if_this_image_is_Hurricane_Floyd_or_Hurricane_Fran? and believe that the behavior of CurlyHeadCel seems to be suspicious, which was why I filed an SPI but it was closed with no action since there isn't a known master. Considering their comments here and on commons, I believe they are trolling us at the very least. Noah, BSBATalk 14:53, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hurricane Noah - Hi there! Long time no chat! I hope you're doing well. Is there any evidence to suggest that this might be a CalebHughes sock? That user loves to target hurricane-related articles. If you look through the SPI archives for this LTA, you'll see that he's likely still active as of late. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:17, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This involves uploading significantly modified images to commons without a source and trying to claim they are from a much older storm than they actually are. They asked us at the link I provided to identify the storm and we discovered the image manipulation. Seems a bit different than the person you mention but it’s rather odd for a new account to exhibit such behavior. Noah, BSBATalk 21:43, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, did you know that you both are red, blue, and green (not the same order, though). Very pretty.--Bbb23 (talk) 21:58, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I still believe there is something fishy going on. I don't believe they are acting in good faith and are merely attempting to waste our time and troll us. The off-wiki forum account they linked to makes me even more suspicious. Noah, BSBATalk 23:32, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hurricane Noah - Have you created an SPI report or created a discussion at ANI to report your suspicions? ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:22, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The SPI was closed and deleted because it was a one account report. Should I open a thread at ANI? Noah, BSBATalk 19:26, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hurricane Noah - If you think that a discussion and some pairs of eyes on this is warranted, sure. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 20:15, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I filed the ANI and notified the user. Noah, BSBATalk 20:53, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hurricane Noah - Perfect; keep me posted. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:28, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

My story today is - because of the anniversary of the premiere OTD in 1782 - about Die Entführung aus dem Serail, opera by Mozart, while yesterday's was - because of the TFA - about Les contes d'Hoffmann, opera by Offenbach, - so 3 times Mozart if you click on "music" ;) -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:30, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Today's story is about a photographer who took iconic pictures, especially View from Williamsburg, Brooklyn, on Manhattan, 9/11, yesterday's was a great mezzo, and on Thursday we watched a sublime ballerina. Hi Oshwah,

You recently protected Steve S. Stanulis because of a content dispute. The content that Screw the clout was adding is a blatant copyright violation of https://stanulisfilms.com/about/. Would you mind revdel-ing the copyvios so I can close the case on Copypatrol?

Thanks, C F A 💬 20:56, 17 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It's definitely safe to say that this user has exhausted all of their warnings; if these behaviors continue, this user will be blocked without further warning beforehand. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:07, 17 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

LTA on IP range?

[edit]

Hi. I've recently run into an IP editor who seems to be somewhat problematic. When I go to their talk page, I see they are on a IP range that you previously temporarily blocked for LTA. As I am not familiar with the LTA context, I have no way of knowing if the current editor is the problem child. The IP is 208.87.236.180 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log). Could you please determine whether this is the individual that was intended to be blocked by the range block, and take some action if this proves to be the case? Thank you. Skyerise (talk) 10:04, 19 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

To save you some time, I reviewed their contribs and found that they vandalized an LGBT userbox and also seem to have made a questionable edit to Transgender rights in Australia, so if the LTA had to do with LGBT issues, this is probably them. The issue I am having with them also indirectly relates to LGBT rights: they seem to object to the inclusion of a link to a Wikipedia page which asserts such rights, though that is incidental to the disputed content. Skyerise (talk) 10:19, 19 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Skyerise - I apologize for the delay with respond to you. Life has been busy... :-) Is this still an issue? Let me know and I'll be happy to check it out. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:36, 27 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the IP has since taken me to ANI: without much success due to their case not really having much merit. It's still not clear to me if they were the intended target of the range block, but for the moment it seems a bit moot as IPs are currently blocked from editing ANI due to vandalism. However, if you had anything substantive to add about the reasons that IP was previously blocked at WP:ANI#Skyerise: Edit Warring, aspersions, incivility, wikistalking, I wouldn't object to you adding it. If you don't, it's probably better to say nothing, as if there are no more replies there, the thread will soon be archived. Skyerise (talk) 13:24, 27 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I've identified the user behind the IP as the banned user Bethsheba Ashe. She slipped up by using a non-proxied IP when replying to the ANI thread, here, identifying herself with the 208 IP. See Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/Bethsheba_Ashe/Archive for further evidence. Skyerise (talk) 12:33, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Skyerise - HA! Whelp, that'll certainly result in the matter getting handled. ;-) Don't be a stranger if I can lend a hand or step in and take care of anything else, and I'll be happy to do so. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:34, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm a canadian musician from British Columbia, Canada, and i'm trying to make my own wikipedia page, can you help me? --Samoababy (talk) 11:51, 23 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Samoababy - See this page. Creating an autobiography on yourself is a strongly discouraged activity and for many reasons (one of which being that it makes it nearly impossible for you to add content that's written with a neutral point of view). I'd say that out of 100 autobiographies that users try to create about themselves on Wikipedia, 100 of them end up deleted. Don't waste your time; contribute in areas that interest you, become proficient with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, and expand your experience from there. :-) Let me know if you have any more questions, and I'll be happy to answer them. The Station

[edit]

Hi there! I noticed that you made an edit on The Station nightclub fire in which you put the name of the venue, The Station, in italics. I've never seen the name of a business in italics before, assumed it wasn't manual of style and changed it back. But I also noticed who made the edit and wanted to double-check with you as well. Doc Strange! It's so good to see you again! It's been wayyy too too long! I hope you're doing well! Hi T24boo! I'm always happy to help! Is there something specific that you'd like me to check your edits for? :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 01:48, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from T24boo (02:07, 2 August 2024)

[edit]

Hi. I’d just like the edit I did today for Michelle checked. I feel like I deleted too much. --T24boo (talk) 02:07, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again, T24boo! Let's take a look at this edit you made. I like that you changed "is widely known for publishing" to "authored". However, my concerns aren't with what you removed, but with what you added. If you look at the diff and see what you added, it looks like you added a fragment (an incomplete sentence). It looks as if you added content, but accidentally deleted the first part of the sentence. It just starts with, "book [sic] that integrates family therapy and hypnotherapy". Obviously that doesn't make sense. :-) Another thing as well is the fact that the text you added, "Ritterman has worked extensively with survivors of political torture and their families. Her work has been translated into Spanish, German, Italian, and French". This isn't elaborated more in-depthin the body of the article, and it... might be seen by some reviewers as possibly being non-neutral or talking positively about the article subject. If you look at this guideline page, it should talk about how summary paragraphs work (which is where you made this edit). We generally want summary paragraphs to also be mentioned in the body of the article and be referenced by a reliable source. I don't expect someone new such as yourself to know this, but I figured I'd mention it as well in order to help you understand, learn, and grow here. :-) Your second edit here cleans that up, though... so that's good! However, if you look at both of your edits before and after, overall I don't think you did a bad job. Nice work! Just keep those things in mind; you'll learn as you do this more. :-) Don't be a stranger if you need my assistance with anything else. Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:24, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks but

[edit]

Thanks for blocking the IPs but in several recent cases I've seen by different admins, the block has been for a year with talk-page access off. Johnuniq (talk) 06:07, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Johnuniq! I saw this as well. The reason I kept them short was the fact that the LTA is cycling and tossing through IP addresses like a NASCAR racing car does with tires during a race. I haven't taken any time to look into any lists, patterns, ranges, or any data regarding this user's cycling of IPs, but in usual cases and in my experience, LTAs who use and toss IP addresses like people use and toss toilet paper rarely go back and consciously use them again. In fact, depending on what IPs are being "used and tossed", blocking each IP for a year is more likely to cause more harm than good compared to subsequently putting a stop to future abuse by the same (or another) LTA. If the consensus is (or if you strongly feel) that one year is an appropriate and acceptable duration in this case, please don't hesitate to extend the IP blocks that I made - you don't need my approval first. :-) Thanks for the message, and please don't be a stranger if I can discuss anything with you further. I'll be happy to do so. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 08:42, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Codename Noreste 🤔 Talk 08:21, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Codename Noreste - Bah, I know... I haven't gotten around to updating any edit filters with the suggestions and conditions you shared. Let me get back to you today and let me get this task on my to-do. I apologize; I've been busy, tired, sick, busy again, and everything in between... I can only fit so much onto my plate per day and with the leftover energy that I have left after I'm finished with my day at the office... :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 08:44, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
