Question from T24boo (02:07, 2 August 2024)

[edit]

Hi. I’d just like the edit I did today for Michelle checked. I feel like I deleted too much. --T24boo (talk) 02:07, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again, T24boo! Let's take a look at this edit you made. I like that you changed "is widely known for publishing" to "authored". However, my concerns aren't with what you removed, but with what you added. If you look at the diff and see what you added, it looks like you added a fragment (an incomplete sentence). It looks as if you added content, but accidentally deleted the first part of the sentence. It just starts with, "book [sic] that integrates family therapy and hypnotherapy". Obviously that doesn't make sense. :-) Another thing as well is the fact that the text you added, "Ritterman has worked extensively with survivors of political torture and their families. Her work has been translated into Spanish, German, Italian, and French". This isn't elaborated more in-depthin the body of the article, and it... might be seen by some reviewers as possibly being non-neutral or talking positively about the article subject. If you look at this guideline page, it should talk about how summary paragraphs work (which is where you made this edit). We generally want summary paragraphs to also be mentioned in the body of the article and be referenced by a reliable source. I don't expect someone new such as yourself to know this, but I figured I'd mention it as well in order to help you understand, learn, and grow here. :-) Your second edit here cleans that up, though... so that's good! However, if you look at both of your edits before and after, overall I don't think you did a bad job. Nice work! Just keep those things in mind; you'll learn as you do this more. :-) Don't be a stranger if you need my assistance with anything else. Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:24, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks but

[edit]

Thanks for blocking the IPs but in several recent cases I've seen by different admins, the block has been for a year with talk-page access off. Johnuniq (talk) 06:07, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Johnuniq! I saw this as well. The reason I kept them short was the fact that the LTA is cycling and tossing through IP addresses like a NASCAR racing car does with tires during a race. I haven't taken any time to look into any lists, patterns, ranges, or any data regarding this user's cycling of IPs, but in usual cases and in my experience, LTAs who use and toss IP addresses like people use and toss toilet paper rarely go back and consciously use them again. In fact, depending on what IPs are being "used and tossed", blocking each IP for a year is more likely to cause more harm than good compared to subsequently putting a stop to future abuse by the same (or another) LTA. If the consensus is (or if you strongly feel) that one year is an appropriate and acceptable duration in this case, please don't hesitate to extend the IP blocks that I made - you don't need my approval first. :-) Thanks for the message, and please don't be a stranger if I can discuss anything with you further. I'll be happy to do so. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 08:42, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from SaltyStarCat (15:27, 5 August 2024)

[edit]

Hey I recently uploaded an image for the page on North Korean defector, Lim Ji-Hyun. I uploaded the image through wikimedia but while there I could not find a category for ownership that applied to state broadcasts apart from the US. Since the image was a screenshot from the broadcast, did I mess up by uploading the image? --SaltyStarCat (talk) 15:27, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi SaltyStarCat! Welcome to Wikipedia! It appears that you've uploaded the image correctly in a technical sense, as I see image displayed on the Lim Ji-hyun article just fine. The only concerns I have involves whether or not the licensing attribute declared on the image's media page is correct, or whether or not this image really is in the Public Domain. So long as you know for absolute sure that this is correct, then I don't see any other concerns. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 15:55, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you

[edit]

Thank you for blocking that harasser, unfortunately it's not the first time he does this, and he can be quite persistent with his disruptive editing. Next time it happens, where can I report him in order to have him blocked asap? Also, he created this nonsensical draft, to be deleted. Cosma Seini (talk) 17:16, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Btw he is to be blocked in every possible way because he's highly disruptive. Cosma Seini (talk) 17:44, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'll be happy to do what I can to keep the harassment and trolling down. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 17:52, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot. He tends to be very annoying, usually starting on it.wiki and then, if blocked there, continuing to harass here on en.wiki. I'm not his only "victim", every it.wiki admin deals with him once in a while . He's just bored to death I guess :) Cosma Seini (talk) 18:00, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from T24boo on HMAS Korowa (05:59, 7 August 2024)

How do I add the entire history I found in a website which is quite lengthy. I archived it but do I use the original citation from 2016? --T24boo 05:59, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi T24boo! Welcome to Wikipedia! Are you referring to a reference that you found? Length should not matter; you should be able to cite the reference by using the URL and other information. I highly recommend checking out the page that I linked you to in the previous sentence, as it will show you how to use the {{cite}} template (as well as show you the other variants of it that are available) to cite your reference. You shouldn't need to do anything else. Hello there Grapefanatic. It's very nice to meet you and it would be an honor for me to ask you questions. Hi Jamathon1! Welcome to Wikipedia! When you say, "able to edit correctly without changing the lines of the sentences" - are you trying to make an edit that doesn't affect or change any text at all? Hi Oshwah, you may want to protect Amdo in the end. [edit]

hi i am itrwosu my school is blocked from editing and i just want to do some good edits for wikipedia --Itrwosu (talk) 00:47, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Itrwosu! If the school's IP address is hard blocked, this means that the block placed on the IP or IP range also will not allow any account that are currently using that IP from editing. It doesn't add a block or a block log to your account. Instead, the MediaWiki interface will simply tell you about the block that is currently applied to the IP address that you're connecting through. All you need to do is connect to Wikipedia through another internet or network connection that uses a different IP address, and you'll be allowed to edit as usual. Please let me know if you have any more questions, and I'll be happy to answer them and assist you further. :-) Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 01:14, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question Thanks so much from AradhanaChatterjee (15:38, 23 August 2024)

[edit]

Thank you for letting my very non-wikipedia style (sleep deprivation induced) rant/vent post stay on the wonderful Oshwah's talk page for this long. It did ward off the definitely not good faith editor from my talk page.

I made the post here after an editor with an older account assumed that because my account was new, they could just throw a bunch of (very incorrect) jargon at me (with a bunch of unrelated shortcut wikilinks) and assert some faux authority, I suppose? Then when I pointed out to them that only this account is new, I've been on this website all my life and their post was redundant, they made some ai text generation accusation (with no links or diffs this time) and warned me about "being cautious" and avoiding Wikipedia policy violations. 🤥🤯😖

I figured might just leave this post here that'd show up in my contribs so they know new user accounts have nice, kind and experienced editors helping them out and who definitely would see through that editor's nonsensical disruptive edits.

Anyway now I'm back to my peaceful copy-editing and adding citations wherever I can editor mode - so I'd be remiss not to edit this post too :) AradhanaChatterjee (talk) 22:14, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

AradhanaChatterjee - Hi there! I'm happy to hear that the issue is resolved. I always want disputes to end peacefully, but (as you very likely already know) that doesn't happen sometimes. If someone is being a bad faith user, they're usually users who end up being blocked for vandalism or other problems. My recommendation is to take the meat and leave the bones; what I'm saying is that there will often be someone who will try their best to help you, but the way and manner in which they relay this to you might be translated differently or "give a bad vibe". It takes skill and it takes experience to be able to convey your feelings, attitude, message, really your... "voice" ... through text. That's why I say, "take the meat and leave the bones" in these situations. People might not have a great attitude or they'll come out as outright mean - but they'll have a helpful message behind their thoughts. If you have any questions or if I can help you with anything, please let me know and I'll be happy to lend you a hand. :-) Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:28, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: Replying here bacause I kinda forgot about this interaction and failed to follow up after that. Additionally, the talk pages were not added to my watchlist and hence, I wasn't able to follow up. Glad to hear the issue has been settled somehow, but since I am the involved user here, I would like to clarify my points regarding what happened.
  • The user named AradhanaChatterjee !voted support on the move discussion at Talk:2024 Kolkata rape and murder (permalink) without providing any rationale, but with an edit summary Too many feelings to write out a more technically correct response - which is kinda what i do if u check my contribs. But the impact of proper nouns in India is something i'll never truly accept. i'm still here tho. so take my silent solidarity as a message before i lash out at the status quo enablers. in dec 2012, this is where i came to find out more information about the case because i'm not fear motivated and my parents for the first time imposed gender roles on me was confusing. I reverted it AGF within 3 minutes with an edit summary of Not exactly the place to show solidarity and support. The discussion is about the change of the title. The revert was because of the summary and blank support with no rationale (WP:VOTESTACKING) on the discussion.
  • Following that, I placed the level 1 warning template in the user talk, explaining the inappropriate usage of talk page for such edits. Since the account was new and few edits were there, I assumed it's a new account (also from the edit patterns).
  • About an hour later, the user added a rationale and !voted support on the move proposal.
  • Thereafter, this discussion took place. Some of the edits were giving a little LLM vibe and hence I pointed that put too and mentioned See WP:LLM for more. If not, ignore. Thanks.
  • One final point I'd like to make is about the I've literally had to put my original text to the scary LLM and humanise it. Sad. Kind of like most Indian men even comment from them, which I'm still unable to figure out quite as much. I'm not sure if it was a general comment about all Indian men or a personal attack on me. Nonetheless, I just let them be because last I checked, they went admin shopping and ranting on various talk pages, and giving long edit summaries about me gatekeeping.
It was never my intention to intimidate or be condescending to them and I apologise if I came out like that. If only they have asked me more for the diffs and permalinks, I'd have happily given them so. They are prolific and highly enthusiastic editor and I hope my behavior haven't caused them any pain or given a reason to quit Wikipedia.
Except on the case of very obvious vandals, I always assume good faith when any editor makes a mistake and try to help them out. I'm sure scores of users who have interacted with me can vouch for that. I have been doing the same for over a decade and never had such a interaction. Anyways, it's on the past and I just wanted to make my side of the story set right before proceeding. Thanks Oshwah. Happy editing yall :) The Herald (Benison) (talk) 15:46, 8 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Old edit apology

[edit]

You probably don't remember this, but I tried to edit a page back in 2019 without adding a source, and when you removed it (obviously) I tried to argue back (here is the link to that discussion: User:Oshwah/TalkPageArchives/2019-02#Ohi Day). I wanted to thank you for removing my edit and apologize for arguing back. Have a good day. CristinaK1756 (talk) 19:48, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi CristinaK1756! I really appreciate your message. No apologies are necessary at all, and I have no qualms, ill-will, or anything at all against you. We were all new here at some point in time. Just because you made a mistake or didn't do something correctly here doesn't make you a bad editor. We learn from failure; I have made WAYYYY more than my fair share of mistakes, including ridiculous stupid ones that had big effects on the site and other contributors. If you're not making your mistakes, you're not learning and growing. Never take a failure as a failure; take them all as learning opportunities. You will succeed; failure is not a "left-or-right split in the road" where you have to pick which way is the right way to go. It's nearly always one direct path - fail, fail, maybe fail again, and then success. :-) Thanks again for the message. It feels good to know that what we're doing is actually making a good difference for others, and that is something I strive for and do so seriously. :-D Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:39, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Gerda Arendt - Where is all this time going? At this rate, I'm going to blink my eyes and be 70 years old. :-) Thank you for the anniversary message. It means a lot to me (including the fact that I apparently am precious). :-D ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:56, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Jermaineqweli (20:08, 4 September 2024)

[edit]

Hello, pls how can I create a page that talks about me as an artiste? Like my own wiki page that talks about my story as an artiste --Jermaineqweli (talk) 20:08, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Jermaineqweli - Writing an article about yourself, or writing an autobiography on Wikipedia, is a highly discouraged activity. In nearly all cases, users who do this end up finding out that they wasted all their time doing this. If you don't meet the notability guidelines, any article you create about yourself will be deleted. I recommend that you spend your time creating or improving existing articles that interest you. If you are indeed notable, someone will undoubtedly write an article about you. Please let me know if you have any more questions. I'll be happy to answer them and help you. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:52, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Just let you know that 24.54.149.103 has just been blocked by Eli - see here but not the IPv6 editor. Thank you Oshwah. Cassiopeia talk 05:45, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Cassiopeia - 10-4; I just blocked the IPv6. It's pretty obvious when you gander through the IP's contributions. ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 06:11, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Oshwah. Have a good night. Cassiopeia talk 06:28, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion tag

[edit]

Hello, I see that you deleted the biography of the new artist article I was working on. I just wanted to let you know that I worked really hard on that trying to find new artist who don't have biographies. I am not misusing Wikipedia as a web host but instead using it so other people can find information about their favorite people. I have been using Wikipedia for 3 years and with my experience I think its better to have a conversation with someone before deleting their hard work. I will be creating a new article and as trust I am not using my favorite website a host for myself or others. Tati02lovee (talk) 15:53, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Tati02lovee - Ohhhhh, okay, I understand now. Thanks for letting me know - I've restored your user page. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 16:36, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
THANK YOU SM Tati02lovee (talk) 18:26, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Given that I see from your userpage that you graduated from Oregon Tech, I would think your time zone would be 8 hours behind me at Wales. Therefore tomorrow, I shall discover what you've said about any confirmed actions. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 20:15, 9 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Iggy the Swan - I just responded to your email. My apologies for the delay, but you should be all set! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:07, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Her magesty Aneira! Are you asking where to find article areas that interest you? Is that correct? If so, you can use the search tool here to find a WikiProject that interests you. From there, you can join and collaborate with others who share the same interest. You'll find lists of articles that they're working on, and be able to join them in contributing. :-) If I'm incorrect with your question, please let me know. :-) Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 17:57, 9 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from ShenikaSChapman (21:15, 10 September 2024)

[edit]

Is editing very useful and accurate on the first try? --ShenikaSChapman (talk) 21:15, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@ShenikaSChapman (talk page watcher) That depends on how accurate your edit is and how useful. This seems to me to be a question that you knew the answer to already.
As an example, this question of yours was accurate, but, because you knew the answer already and because that answer was in your control, it was not useful to the recipient, and the answer was not useful to you. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 21:30, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sources

[edit]

Hello, Oshwah. How are you? I'm new to Wikipedia. How do I add sources? I have about 5 sources from different universities and the U.S Federal government. I think I might have messaged you accidently 2 times. If so my bad. Infowars23 (talk) 21:41, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Infowars23! Welcome to Wikipedia! We have a page that shows you exactly how to do this. It's very simple, and you'll get used to it very quickly. Just navigate over to Wikipedia's page on citing sources for the information that you're looking for. If you have any questions about anything on that page, or if I can assist you with anything else, please let me know and I'll be more than happy to help you. :-) Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:25, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
