Recommending new editors to your WP Chicago

(Copied from my talk page)

Hi TonyTheTiger,

Our system generated a list of potential new editors for your project. They may be interested in collaborating with your project members on your project's articles. As you will notice, the list contains both experienced editors and newcomers. Both are valuable for Wikipedia and your project. Please go ahead and introduce your project to them, and point them to some project tasks to start with. We also provide a template invitation message to make it easier to contact the potential new editors. Just click the invite link to write the invitation message.

We'd appreciate it if you could fill the survey to let us know what you think about our recommendations so we can improve our system.

Can I send invitations to new members for your project?

Hi, I have been working on recommending new members for your project for a while, and have sent some lists to TonyTheTiger who helped invite those recommended members. I wonder if you mind me sending invitations directly for WikiProject Chicago to save time and efforts of yours? Thank you! Bobo.03 (talk) 05:16, 23 February 2018 (UTC)

Cloud Gate April views

Any theories regarding Cloud Gate's April pageviews?-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 05:36, 7 May 2018 (UTC)

Well, the Chicago Public Library posted about April 22 being National Jelly Bean Day on April 19, with a prominent mention of the sculpture. Also the Chicago Jazz Festival announced their 2018 schedule with some mentions of events there. But neither one of those really seems to explain such a large and brief spike. If it were 4/20, I would have some different theories. Nick Number (talk) 13:00, 7 May 2018 (UTC)
I have looked into this, and have a few theories. Anish Kapoor was in the news recently for objecting to an NRA ad using the sculpture, and for being a fellow recipient of an Israeli prize that Natalie Portman refused. His own article saw a large spike as well, though not as large as his sculpture. There was also something about it being recognized as the most-visited site in Chicago. I think the most likely, though, is some viral story about the similarity of the sculpture in Chicago to his new Houston work, Cloud Column. (I haven't been able to find something on the right date, but there were a few buzzy media pieces on this earlier in the month, and I could see it going viral in Houston/Texas.)--Pharos (talk) 15:40, 7 May 2018 (UTC)

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   07:28, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

Hi! Chicago-based Navigant Consulting has hired me to request some updates to its article, which I've done over on the article's talk page. The article is currently tagged with a few maintenance templates—{{third-party}} and {{ad}}. I'm hoping my requests will begin to address both. If anyone here is up for taking a look and sharing feedback, I'd appreciate it tremendously. Thank you! Mary Gaulke (talk) 03:49, 10 December 2018 (UTC)

Help with Magnetar Capital article

Hi there! I'm looking to see if there are members of this WikiProject who are interested in Chicago-area companies and can review an edit request at Magnetar Capital to clean up the infobox and add some clarification to the introduction. For those who don't know, Magnetar Capital is an investment management firm located in Evanston. The article has some fairly major issues that need to be addressed, but to start with, I'm looking to make some simple fixes to basic company information. As disclosure, I do have a financial conflict of interest, as I am here on behalf of Magnetar Capital as part of my work at Beutler Ink. I'm looking for input from uninvolved editors and assistance making edits if they're appropriate. Thanks in advance, 16912 Rhiannon (Talk · COI) 13:44, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

WP 1.0 Bot Beta

Hello! Your WikiProject has been selected to participate in the WP 1.0 Bot rewrite beta. This means that, starting in the next few days or weeks, your assessment tables will be updated using code in the new bot, codenamed Lucky. You can read more about this change on the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial team page. Thanks! audiodude (talk) 06:46, 27 February 2019 (UTC)

Portal:Chicago (and others)

In anticipation of the discussion regarding WikiProjects and portals on the Village Pump, I suggest we start discussing whether to keep Portal:Chicago. Even if that proposal falls through I still think it's a good idea to discuss it. As someone who never uses portals I couldn't care less as to whether we keep it or not, but it seems to have some activity, being edited 9 times in 2019 (although one of those was a reversion). -John M Wolfson (talk) 23:15, 30 March 2019 (UTC)

EDIT: I'll also expand this to include Portal:University of Chicago since that doesn't appear to have its own WikiProject. Feel free to add others. -John M Wolfson (talk) 23:35, 30 March 2019 (UTC)

A new newsletter directory is out!

A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

Ward articles

To the best of my understanding we have 2 articles on Chicago's wards:

(There's also a 50th Ward that redirects to the West Ridge page). I've done some improvements on the 4th ward page, but I wanted some more community consensus as to whether it's worth the trouble of improving those ward pages and creating them for all 50. I know other cities such as New Orleans and New York have articles on their respective electoral divisions but they tend to be poorly-maintained and are incomplete in NYC's case. What do you all think? Should we retain the status quo and re-shelve the current ward pages, should we (or at least I) create and flesh out pages for all 50 wards, should we delete/redirect the existing ward articles, or should we do something else entirely? -John M Wolfson (talk) 03:42, 19 April 2019 (UTC)

  • I am not a big fan of Chicago ward articles because they change like congressional districts and are far less encyclopedic. The 77 Community areas in Chicago, such as West Ridge, Chicago, have been fixed by the Census bureau for 100 years and are more worthy of WP space. People in New Orleans probably use wards like Chicagoans use community areas.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 20:21, 22 April 2019 (UTC)
    • Fair enough, I don't think there's much that can be done with them that can't be done with List of Chicago aldermen since 1923 and each community area's page for pre-1923 aldermen. Of all our wards I personally think only the 1st could be article-worthy due to Bathhouse Coughlin and Hinky Dink's antics, and the modern 1st ward doesn't even have the some boundaries. I suggest we no longer maintain these articles, but I'll balk at deleting them without further consensus. John M Wolfson (talk) 20:37, 22 April 2019 (UTC)
    • I generally agree Ward articles should be avoided, since most topics within the geographic boundaries are covered in other articles. The only time I might see a ward article worthwhile is if there is specific antics related to the ward - e.g. redistricting or political battles related to specific wards that aren't relative to the underlying neighborhoods/community areas. --Mindfrieze (talk) 18:28, 23 April 2019 (UTC)
    • No problem with an article on Wards [1], see also [2] as for specific wards I can't see why we would be against them per se, if they meet the general rules of notability (even though I would agree maintaining them would be a chore but then that is not a reason for delete, nor is 'I don't want to write it.') See also [3] [4] I mean, if someone actually did put together a well researched history of No. whatever ward (from 1837 to present) that would be an awesome service for understanding (not that I would suggest holding our breath on that). Alanscottwalker (talk) 19:15, 23 April 2019 (UTC)
      • Fair enough, I don't think I'll be working on ward articles myself here on out, but if someone really wanted to create those articles and improve them substantially more power to them. Legally-recognized places are inherently notable on here, IIRC. John M Wolfson (talk) 19:21, 23 April 2019 (UTC)

FAC for 1927 mayoral election isn't receiving much input

1927 Chicago mayoral election is currently a featured article candidate and its candidacy page is here. I know that the FACs related to this WikiProject are also on the project page, but the candidacy is more than a month old and has only been looked at by 2 general reviewers, a source reviewer, and an image reviewer. I was just wondering if anyone else would like to chime in as to whether it meets the FACR, any feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks! – John M Wolfson (talkcontribs) 01:04, 17 May 2019 (UTC)

JLL article updates

Hello, Wikipedia! I'm Jessica, an employee of JLL. I am seeking editors to review some updates to inaccuracies in the infobox of the JLL (company) article. You may review the full request with at Talk:JLL_(company)#Improvements_to_the_infobox. Since the JLL article is listed as being of interest to WikiProject Chicago, I thought there may be editors here with an interest in improving the article.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

Proposal for Community area taskforce

Hello,

I've been thinking about the community area articles, and noticed that articles on neighborhoods (not quite the same, but still) were an open task for this project. I was thinking of forming a taskforce within this WikiProject that would be devoted to the article Community areas in Chicago and each of the 77 community areas, for a total of 78 articles. The eventual goal of the taskforce would be to bring all of those 78 articles to Featured status; if that happens by January 1, 2030, I'll buy everyone who helped drinks at the Berghoff.

For reference, Community areas in Chicago is currently Start-class and each community area's article's assessment is located here (NOTE: You have to view the image in full to see the C-class areas, otherwise they appear as Start-class). In addition to work on the 78 articles, the taskforce would be tasked with annual assessments of each article. Depending on consensus, its purview could expand to Chicago neighborhoods in general, but I think 78 articles are more than enough to sustain it for now and I'd rather it not lose focus.

Would anyone be interested in joining such a taskforce, and is there consensus for or against its formation? I know that work on these articles is possible without one, and I understand skepticism regarding its viability, but I think that a taskforce could help unify and concentrate efforts on that front.

New bot to remove completed infobox requests

Hello! I have recently created a bot to remove completed infobox requests and am sending this message to WikiProject Chicago since the project currently has a backlogged infobox request category. Details about the task can be found at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/PearBOT 2, but in short it removes all infobox requests from articles with an infobox, once a week. To sign up, reply with {{ping|Trialpears}} and tell me if any special considerations are required for the Wikiproject. For example: if only a specific infobox should be detected, such as {{infobox journal}} for WikiProject Academic Journals; or if an irregularly named infobox such as {{starbox begin}} should be detected. Feel free to ask if you have any questions!

Athletic conference for City Colleges of Chicago

I was looking at List of college athletic programs in Illinois. Most of the Chicago city colleges are no longer part of the N4C conference. Only Wright is still listed on their website (and as an associate member). The city colleges do have an athletic department. Is there a particular name for the city college athletic department that could be used in the various college conference lists?

As an aside, it's not clear to me that the name Illinois N4C Conference was ever widely used. It should either be N4C by itself, or North Central Community College Conference. Zagalejo^^^ 05:41, 17 May 2020 (UTC)

Help with request for Chicago company

Hello editors, I am an employee of JLL and have a conflict of interest. I've recently made a request (here) asking for editors to consider removing some details that were added to the JLL page that are about the employee of a subcontractor. Since I have a conflict of interest, I know it's not appropriate for me to edit the page and I'm looking for editors to help with this request. Would anyone here want to help? "Chicagoland"

I'm told that there's a long-standing consensus on WikiProject Chicago that the term "Chicagoland" should be avoided on articles, with "Chicago" or "Chicago area" preferred. While this sounds reasonable to me, I'm unable to locate where this "consensus" stems from (nor was it provided to me) so I figured I'd ask the project directly. What are your views on using the term "Chicagoland" when referring to the Chicago metropolitan area? If you have links to recent discussions about the issue, that would also be appreciated; if not, then perhaps this discussion can be linked to in the future instead. – Rhain 23:30, 28 December 2021 (UTC) not watching; ping me if you want me to see your message

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

The page for Terrence A. Duffy, Chairman and CEO of CME Group (Chicago Mercantile Exchange Group) has some warning tags calling for edits to improve the page. I've put forward a couple of requests so far to help, and the newest request on the Talk page is to rewrite, trim down, and provide appropriate sources for all of the early life and career information. I work for CME Group and have a conflict of interest, which is why I am posting requests instead of just trying to edit it myself. While I've reached out to another WikiProject and also tagged some previous editors, I am still looking for an independent reviewer. Dover Corporation primary-sourced subsection removal request

Hello editors! I'm an employee of Chicago-based Dover Corporation and due to my COI I have been making requests about the company's page for editors to review, rather than making edits. The requests I've made have focused on the issues raised by the page's warning flag that mentions advertising content and overreliance on sources related to Dover. My latest request is about the subsections that discuss the company's different segments: each of these relies on references that are company websites. I'd like to suggest removing at least one of the subsections, and have put forward a specific request to source some content and remove the rest in that one subsection. Although an editor did comment initially, it looks like they are offline or busy and they haven't returned. Would any editors here be able to review and provide feedback? Northwestern Swimmers

If anyone is looking for some obscure athletes to write about, there are a couple of Northwestern Wildcats swimmers that I have stumbled upon that probably deserve articles. I got roped into creating an article for Kelly Hecking, which led me to creating an article for someone who I perceive as her primary rival (Tashy Bohm). While writing Tashy Bohm's article, I stumbled upon Amy Balcerzak {17-time All-American (8 individual) & 3-time AA honorable mention (all individual), 6-time Big Ten Champ (4 individual)}, and Courtney Allen {16-time All-American (4 individual), 4-time Big Ten Champ (1 individual)}, both were multi-medalists for Team USA at Swimming at the 1999 Summer Universiade, with a pair of individual medals and maybe relay medals. P.S. All-American means top 8 at NCAA championships and honorable mention means 2nd 8. this link should help you get your bearings on either swimmer.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 04:22, 10 August 2022 (UTC)

Request for peer review of William McAndrew

At Wikipedia:Peer review/William McAndrew/archive1, I have an open peer review on the article William McAndrew, which I am hoping to elevate to a featured article. If you'd have any input to help me enhance the article, it would be appreciated.

McAndrew was an educator who served most prominently as superintendent of the Chicago Public School system. That is his primary connection to Chicago.

His ouster from the Chicago Public Schools is the most interesting aspect of his bio, and is covered in more extensive detail at Administrative hearing of William McAndrew. It is a truly bizarre circumstance involving Mayor William Hale Thompson, during and after his campaign in the 1927 Chicago mayoral election, levying accusations of disloyalty to America against McAndrew, making cartoonish accusations of McAndrew being an agent of the British crown sent to indoctrinate children and set the stage for a recapture of America by the United Kingdom. Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments are used by Wikipedia editors to rate the quality of articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Anyone able to explain the artist discrepancy between Statue of Benjamin Franklin (Chicago) and commons:Category:Benjamin Franklin by Sigvald Asbjornsen (Chicago)? ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:10, 11 August 2023 (UTC)

It looks to be a complete misattribution. The existing references, plus this 1896 article from the Chicago Chronicle credit it to Richard Henry Park. Need independent editor to review new section for Edelman article

Hello, I'm an employee at Edelman, a PR and communications firm that has its HQ in Chicago. This WikiProject is listed on the Edelman Talk page, so it's my hope that someone here will help me out. I've placed an edit request (link here) on the Edelman Talk page that asks editors to review an all-new Notable campaigns section that I think will improve the article by adding information about PR and advertising campaigns that the firm has been involved in over the past ~25 years. If this sounds interesting to anybody at this WikiProject, please let me know either below this post or on the Edelman Talk page. Thank you in advance to anyone who reviews my request! MichaelBush48 (talk) 13:57, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
