Changing access?
I've been using PROJECT MUSE for several articles recently, but have noted that as of today, The Wikipedia Library Project MUSE account has access to substantially less titles than just a week and a half ago - I accessed and used the Tomblin source at USS Marmora (1862) on November 21, but as of a couple minutes ago can no longer access it or several sources I was intending to use for a userspace rewrite of Siege of Vicksburg. Is this just a temporary thing, an item such as only being allowed to access a source once, or a general change in access criteria for Project MUSE? Hog Farm Talk 01:59, 2 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Hog Farm That's odd, as I still appear to be able to access that text here. Are you accessing Project MUSE by navigating to https://wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org/users/my_library/ and clicking 'Access Collection' under the MUSE entry? Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 10:18, 2 December 2022 (UTC)
- I was. It's now working again as of this instant ... WP:ITSTHURSDAY I guess. Hog Farm Talk 18:11, 2 December 2022 (UTC)
With Springer I have no issues
Springer appears as having service issues, I am not having service issues. Or I could access the articles I attempted. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 00:12, 24 December 2022 (UTC)
Addons/scripts to redirect from JSTOR etc. to Wikipedia Library?
Are there any browser addons or scripts that automatically redirect from pages like https://www.jstor.org/stable/12345 to the Wikipedia Library equivalent? ‑‑YodinT 12:48, 30 December 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Yodin, you can set up Zotero to automatically redirect through proxy (and also generate cite-template references). Alternatively there are two lighter-weight solutions described here. Nikkimaria (talk) 13:43, 30 December 2022 (UTC)
- Perfect, thank you! 👍 ‑‑YodinT 17:25, 30 December 2022 (UTC)
American National Biography paywall
Hello! I'm attempting to access American National Biography through The Wikipedia Library; however, it still appears that most of the articles are still paywalled. Would anyone be interested in confirming this as well, and/or offer any alternative options if the issue arises? Thanks so much! Silikonz💬 17:02, 10 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Silikonz: I'm bummed this hasn't been addressed yet! Just FYI, I used the "Contact us" link at https://wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org/contact/ to note the issue. Hopefully it gets to the right person. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 16:34, 24 December 2022 (UTC)
- Haha, thanks. Will do the same. I'm in no hurry though... happy holidays! Silikonz💬 22:08, 24 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Silikonz: a note from the TWL team:
"We're aware of this unfortunate issue and are working with Oxford University Press to get this reinstated."
You may want to follow this Phabricator ticket for updates on the issue. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 16:52, 6 January 2023 (UTC)

Adjust suggestions?
I have just read the suggestions of which I believe several have been successful. Maybe SAGE, Brill, British Newspaper archive and other added archives could be removed from the suggestions or archived? Paradise Chronicle (talk) 19:56, 13 January 2023 (UTC)
- @Paradise Chronicle We're planning to remove these! Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 09:28, 17 January 2023 (UTC)
Library doesn't load properly?
I was notified via email that an archive suggestion of mine was added to the Library, but upon visiting the Library, only the plain text and links will load on its pages. I've tried to access it in different ways, but it continues to be broken. The landing page here loads properly, but nothing beyond it. I've used the Library before and signed up for access to other archives, so I'm not new to it. Any idea what the problem could be? × Comtesse d'Autodidactica | 📝 11:42, 13 January 2023 (UTC)
- @Comtesse d'Autodidactica It sounds like the site's Javascript might not be loading for you for some reason. Try to do a hard refresh, and let me know if that doesn't work. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 14:19, 13 January 2023 (UTC)
@Samwalton9: After performing a hard refresh, it still doesn't load properly. × Comtesse d'Autodidactica | 📝 22:07, 18 January 2023 (UTC)
Just curious...
Asked in help, kindly re-directed here:
1. My notifications show that I was eligible for the Library "2 months" ago. And I know I used it then and thought I did for a couple of weeks after. How long does the eligibility last? One week on a calendar or a week from the date you become eligible? (I have no proof I used it over a week FWIW, too difficult to check that.)
2. I just looked at my contributions list (you can check) and I didn't actually make many edits at all in the past few months. Certainly not 10 in a week, and not 2 months ago (but did a bunch a year ago). So was it some weird goof that I was made eligible? Or do they actually count ONE edit session that includes several changes? (doubtful but looking at my history it is perplexing at best!) Thanks. gobears87 (talk) 17:58, 20 January 2023 (UTC)
- @Gobears87 Eligibility is checked on an ongoing basis, i.e. each time you log in. The edit activity requirement is 10 edits over the last 30 days. This is also checked at each login, so if you don't meet that criterion you can make a few edits and try again. During the first 30 days of your access to the library that criterion isn't checked (for technical reasons), which might be why you thought you shouldn't be eligible :) Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 12:03, 23 January 2023 (UTC)
- Not 100% sure I understand the last bit but I should get editing because I really did use that access!!! Thanks for teh reply. gobears87 (talk) 01:50, 8 February 2023 (UTC)
Question
I submitted an application for renewal of Newspapers.com access a week ago, but have had no followup. Could somebody advise? Thanks. Bearcat (talk) 16:53, 1 February 2023 (UTC)
- @Bearcat Sorry for the delay. It looks like your application has now been sent over to Newspapers.com, is everything set up and working now? Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 13:30, 21 February 2023 (UTC)
- Yeah, it's been fine for a while now. Bearcat (talk) 14:35, 21 February 2023 (UTC)
How to Sign In
Um, hey. A friend recommended me to this WikiProject and I don't know how to get in. He says it's entirely here on Wiki but I don't know how to start my account and such on here. Faith15 20:31, 22 February 2023 (UTC)
- Welcome, Faith15! The Wikipedia Library's 4 application requirements are listed here. It looks like you meet 3 out of 4, but as of today you have made 110 edits, and the minimum required for access is 500 edits. The wait may be frustrating to you, but resources available here are excellent, so do try again when you have enough edits. — Grand'mere Eugene (talk) 00:31, 23 February 2023 (UTC)
- Okay. Thank you for letting me know about this @Grand'mere Eugene. (Which, by the way, is that French for something? 'Cause one, I don't speak or understand French words besides the basic ones that most Americans know, and two, in case you didn't realize, I'm over here in the U.S.) If you ever need my help, just let me know in my talk page. I can't garuntee I will know it or be able to find it, but I have... certain ways to find out. Faith15 14:31, 23 February 2023 (UTC)

Shooting my shot
Hi there, I work on the daily with students editing Wikipedia, and am wondering if there's a way I can get access to the library to be able to help students find/evaluate sourcing?(my wiki edu acct is not old enough as of yet) It'd be helpful so I can spot-check and make sure sources support claims. Just thought I'd give it a shot and ask. Thank you. Brianda (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:51, 25 January 2023 (UTC)
- Brianda, I support your request, and hope you get exceptional access to TWL. In the meantime, if you have a limited number of specific sourcing requests, ping me from the article Talk page in question, and I'll try to help if I can. Meanwhile, I find the {{Find sources}} template helpful; you can find an embedded version of it on the Talk page of articles that have a {{Talk header}}, such as at Talk:Hashtag activism. The links can be added to talk pages of articles lacking a header using {{general sources notice}}; see for example, see Talk:Prosecutorial discretion. Mathglot (talk) 22:04, 1 February 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for the reminder of these resources! It's kind of you to offer your time and effort. Appreciate it @Mathglot! Brianda (Wiki Ed) (talk) 22:46, 6 February 2023 (UTC)
- @Brianda (Wiki Ed) Sorry for the delay! It may not be very helpful for you to get access to the library - we only have have certain collections and publishers. Is there any way you might be able to ask for access from the universities you're supporting? That's then obviously going to have a direct overlap with the students' resources. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 13:30, 21 February 2023 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, that isn't possible, but thanks for offering an alternative. Appreciate the response. Brianda (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:32, 23 February 2023 (UTC)

Access issues
Thanks for the wonderful resource access! Recently (over the last fortnight let's say) I have been hitting some access issues, with for example newspapers.com, JSTOR and springer: I can login into JSTOR then it says "Request Header Or Cookie Too Large" when I do a search; I can't access Springer, it immediately says "reason: Request Header Fields Too Large"; newspapers.com as I said at Wikipedia_talk:Newspapers.com#Access I'm getting "Oops, we are having trouble loading results" on any request. Any advice on this? I do notice I'm getting a message from Zotero which says "Zotero detected that you are accessing www.jstor.org through a proxy. Would you like to automatically redirect future requests to www.jstor.org through wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org?" which I have been dismissing, otherwise I don't think much has changed at my end. Other things eg Hein, Oxford and Taylor and Francis are still working fine. Thanks. Mujinga (talk) 12:32, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Mujinga For the 'request header too large' style errors, the fix is to clear cookies related to oclc.org. Newspapers.com has separate ongoing issues being tracked in T322916. Please post your error message(s) there to help us out. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 12:42, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
- Samwalton9 (WMF) the suggestion to cleasr cookies has resolved the issues! newspapers.com also now works for me, possibly because of that action or perhaps because of something else. Happy to be able to use the resources again. Cheers! Mujinga (talk) 16:12, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
Issues with Newspapers.com
Hello, I applied for Newspapers.com access on 17 February 2023 but I haven't received any confirmation email from Newspapers.com or TWL (already searched my email and the only emails from TWL are for JSTOR access back in 2019). Later, I checked My Applications page and as of today, there is nothing there (I can't view any historic applications) and according to My Collections page, I'm eligible for Newspapers.com access with TWL proxy (I can view newspaper pages with it, as guest) but unable to login there due to "suspicious activity". What should I do next? Thanks. Vulcan❯❯❯Sphere! 00:32, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
- @VulcanSphere We're in the process of moving Newspapers.com over to the automated method of access. Unfortunately we're hitting a couple of technical issues, which can be tracked in T322916. Could you share further information there about the "suspicious activity" error you're seeing? Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 11:40, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Samwalton9 (WMF) Ah, I see (I just subscribed to that Phab tracker, thank you) After I entered my login information on https://www-newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org, there is a message "Your sign in was blocked because of suspicious activity.".Vulcan❯❯❯Sphere! 13:24, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
- @VulcanSphere & @Samwalton9 (WMF): I've been having the same issue here. workaround for clippings with proxy-based URLs
For anyone who has found it cumbersome to create useful clippings on Newspapers.com and NewspaperArchive since those sites shifted to the bundle model, I've posted one workaround to Wikipedia talk:Newspapers.com#issue converting clipping to citation. Nick Number (talk) 18:20, 7 March 2023 (UTC)
Help with account renewal
It appears my Newspapers.com account (BeanieFan100) has expired. I forget how to request an extension. Could someone help me out? Thanks. BeanieFan11 (talk) 14:37, 18 March 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @BeanieFan11 - Newspapers.com is now accessed directly via proxy, rather than via individual accounts. Simply navigate to the library and click Access Collection to start using it. You can log in to your old account there to store/access clippings. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 13:30, 22 March 2023 (UTC)
Login/OAuth failures (T332650)
Do I need to do anything about this login issue? I've tried a few times now and can't log in for my Wikipedia Library admin work. Can't make a clipping on newspapers.com
I'm logged in via the TWL interface, with a "Welcome from Wikimedia Foundation" banner at the top of the page. I've found an article I want to cite, but when I click the "Clip" button, I get an dialog box saying, "Register with Newspapers.com™ to create a clipping". Am I doing something wrong, or is it just broken? -- RoySmith (talk) 17:13, 5 April 2023 (UTC)
- I'm not sure how to solve your issue, but I think this is the clipping you were going for. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 17:19, 5 April 2023 (UTC)
- Indeed, thanks. Although, it turns out it's also available at the LOC, so I've linked to that version. -- RoySmith (talk) 18:17, 5 April 2023 (UTC)
- @RoySmith If you don't have an existing newspapers.com account, click Register with Email and set up an account. Otherwise, click Sign In and log in with your old newspapers.com account. Then you should be able to save the clipping. It will have an unfriendly non-public URL, but you can either manually change "www-newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org" to "newspapers.com" in the address bar, or use the bookmarklet I posted to do it automatically. Nick Number (talk) 19:41, 5 April 2023 (UTC)
- Interesting. I do have a personal account. When I search, I find that article, but when I click on it in the search results, I get a dialog asking me to "Upgrade to a Publisher Extra Subscription to view this page". I'll try the bookmarklet thing, thanks. -- RoySmith (talk) 20:05, 5 April 2023 (UTC)

Tilastopaja application pending
Hi, I applied for Tilastopaja access on Feb 4 2023 but the application is still Pending. Having access would really be useful to improve athletics wiki pages, which has been the primary focus of my work here. The application is here. As it has been 76 days, is there anyone I can contact / ping to have it reviewed? Perhaps @Stryn?
Thanks, --Habst (talk) 01:33, 22 April 2023 (UTC)

Oxford Academic availability
This collection seems to be back online, I was able to navigate to it via a link on Oxford Reference and access the book The Oxford Handbook of Holocaust Studies which is part of Oxford Academic. (t · c) buidhe 22:20, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Buidhe We're honestly a little confused about what Oxford collections we should have and where we should be sending users to access them. We're desperately trying to get Oxford on a call to figure this out. Anyway, thanks for this information, hopefully we can track this down soon. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 14:03, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
I need some help with my Newspapers.com account...
I love Newspapers.com. I admit though, that I am kind of miffed about the general concept, that content that was already paid-for is now behind a paywall/somewhat unavailable... But anyway, I still think it is useful, it's the only way to access so much needed historical information. So. I posted about my issue over on meta. I have a fancy Newspapers.com account that I'd like to stop paying for and I know I can access Newspapers.com through the WP Library but...does anyone know if I will lose access to my paid account? Is there anyone - lol - that I can talk to at Newspapers.com about this? (I know, I know...) Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 23:01, 30 May 2023 (UTC)
- I found that my Newspapers.com account had expired and was looking for how I could get it re-instated. Then I found that is no longer the way-of-working. What you need to do is to access Newspapers.com from the Wikipedia Library, which takes you to the resource via a custom link. First off, I've bookmarked WP:LIB and I access resources via "The Wikipedia Library" link in the first paragraph. On that page you'll see a "login via Wikipedia" button; click that button and 'do the needful' and if you've set up some personal favorites, you'll likely land on that page. To find Newspapers.com, best way is to click through the "My Collections (71)" facet and scroll down to the entry. You can 'favorite' the entry by clicking on the star in the upper right corner of the resource panel. To get into the resource, click on the "Access collection" link and it will bring up Newspapers.com but via a quite different link; you should find your wikipedia login id as your identity already pre-populated. Snipping content still works the same way as before.
- I kind of miss not having my own account, but this works. Regards --User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 01:44, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
Eastview Online databases
Has there been any effort to add Eastview Information Services' extensive range of online databases to TWL? They have a wide range of newspaper collections that cover areas such as East Asia, the Middle East and Eastern Europe that are not included in the other newspaper archive providers that are currently in TWL. Adding access to these newspapers would help with addressing systemic bias against topics relevant to non-English speaking countries. Kges1901 (talk) 01:01, 2 June 2023 (UTC)

I cannot view any links to any Newspapers.com pages/images (recent example: https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/768971871/) that someone may have used as a citation in a wiki article, unless that person has accessed the image themselves via TWL and included the "wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/" in the url they posted (recent example: https://www-newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/image/811600174/?terms=%22Schmilsson%20in%20the%20Night%22&match=3). So it's not like having a Newspapers.com account. Softlavender (talk) 03:37, 11 June 2023 (UTC)

- You should still be able to create/log into an account from that link if you need for managing clippings etc. For viewing links that are posted without the proxy string in the URL, you can add it, either using a bookmarklet or manually (see instructions under Access tips). FindMyPast voucher not working?
I just got approved for FindMyPast via the Wikipedia library. I signed up for an account and then went to the voucher URL as described in the email I got and entered the code frommy email. The message I got was "The voucher code entered doesn't seem to be working. Double check it has been entered correctly, it hasn't expired and you haven't used it before. If you are using a code to claim a discount rather than redeem a subscription, this can be activated here." I did double check the code. I'm not sure what my next steps are and any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. Jessamyn (my talk page) 20:10, 17 June 2023 (UTC)

Citing urls to Newspapers.com
I have found an obituary in a UK national newspaper (the Daily Telegraph) that I want to cite. I'm embarrassed to ask this, but is the best way to cite the url simply to include the Newspapers.com's url, knowing that most users won't be able to read it as they aren't logged on? Is there any alternative to how I've done it below? I could put the url in the archive url box, but I don't know the archive date, so I get lots of red warnings.
Richard Francis died aged 58.[1]
- Nick Moyes, Are you not able to create a clipping using the WPLibrary account? I have a separate subscription to newspapers.com, and created a clipping that should be available to all readers.[2] — Grand'mere Eugene (talk) 23:08, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Grand'mere Eugene Ah - I wasn't aware of that 'clip' facility. I've tested it out to see if it's available to WP Library readers. Unfortunately, it appears one isn't actually signed in to Newspapers.com via WP:LIBRARY, and one has to register for a a paid subscription with Newspapers.com. Don't think I can afford that if I can't log in through Wikipedia.
.
- You know, one of the main weaknesses I feel with WP:LIBRARY is the lack of a really useful FAQ or Help section that addresses all these various issues.
- (Oh, and apologies for posting at the top of the page - don't think I've ever done that before in my 12 years here. More haste; less competence!) Nick Moyes (talk) 20:01, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
- I once had access to newpapers.com via the WPLibrary link, but it mysteriously disappeared prior to the date of renewal. Same with the Ancestry.com access via WPLibrary. I finally paid to re-subscribe to my personal Ancestry account, and signed up there for Ancestry's discounted membership to newspapers.com. I noticed both WPLibrary listings have tags, "An issue is impacting accessT327653" and "Ongoing work may impact accessT322916"
- NewspaperARCHIVE.com (also available on WPLibrary) is an alternative, but the search engine is clunky, slow, finicky., and somewhat maddening. But if you chance to select exactly the correct search terms, it has good resources, different from newspapers.com. — Grand'mere Eugene (talk) 21:20, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Grand'mere Eugene@Nick Moyes I'm sorry to hear that you're finding this confusing. Newspapers.com (along with Ancestry and NewspaperARCHIVE.com) have moved to the proxy-based method of access, instead of individual accounts. We're planning to send an email about this to Newspapers.com users soon, that got delayed because of some minor access issues we were fixing. We made this move because it streamlines the process of receiving access - users no longer need to request an account, wait an unclear amount of time for it to get setup, and then receive further instructions via email. You also no longer need to request renewal on a regular basis. You can now simply click Access Collections and get through to Newspapers.com with full access to the site's content. Unfortunately, that comes with some drawbacks, primarily the confusion above about how to cite the strange URL pattern.
- The easiest way to get a URL which you can cite on Wikipedia is simply to replace
https://www-newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/
withhttps://www.newspapers.com/
in the URL. This will give you a URL which looks just like it did when you accessed the site via your individual account. - Speaking of accounts, even when accessing the library in this way, you can still sign in to a Newspapers.com account to save and access Clippings. If you didn't have an account yet you can register a new one without paying. Unfortunately Newspapers.com is showing some confusing messages like "Try 7 days free" despite the proxy authentication working as intended.
- All the above will also apply for Ancestry.com (you shouldn't need to pay yourself!) except that there are a few technical issues we're still ironing out, as documented at the Phabricator ticket linked above.
- I hope that helps - is there anything that's still confusing or unclear? Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 08:49, 13 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Samwalton9 (WMF) Thank you for that advice. I will give that a try out in the next few days. I was certainly put off by the 7-day trial link to Newspapers.com.
- Seeing as how you asked: The thing I find most confusing/unclear about the whole Wikipedia Library resource is that one has to know how to use it before one can use it! In other words, it's a wonderful resource that is hard to understand how to utilise effectively becasue of the way it is presented.
- The main WP:LIBRARY page could, in my view, be improved by adding a 'How to use the Library' section. Even the top link in the first sentence is surprisingly easy to miss, as one expects a link lower down on the page to access it - but there isn't one. (It took me a few visits floundering around before I found it.)
- I feel my experience here - and probably that of many others - is rather like a new student on their first day at University, being shown the wonderful campus libary building, full of books, and lines of periodicals in the stacks (I'm showing my age!) and other amazing resources, but unsure how to gain access to use its facilities.
- In fact, despite visiting many times, I've only today spotted the 'Learn more' link which takes me here. Surely that needs to be accessible from the main library page?
- I think it would help immensely if, as seems likely, many of these databases have their own peculiarities for access and for creating useable citations, that an FAQ with a few worked examples are provided. The 'Citation practices' section could certainly benefit from expansion to help users better understand what to do. If needs be, why not offer a link from each resources to explain and special requirements needed to make use of it?
- Sorry to sound critical, but these observations are intended to highlight ways that I think could help make the resources here more accessible, both for research into possible notable topics and then, of course, to actually cite those findings. Cheers, Nick Moyes (talk) 10:47, 13 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Nick Moyes Don't worry about sounding critical - I think these are all great thoughts. We'll have a chat and see what we think is feasible. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 11:51, 14 July 2023 (UTC)

How to renew Newspapers.com Publisher Extra after it has expired?
Hi, I realized my access to Newspapers.com Publisher Extra expired a couple of months ago and needed to use it again to gather sources for an agreed upon split article. However I cannot find a way to request a renewal. It is still in my currently accessible collections but I am downgraded to Registered Guest. ToQ100gou (talk) 13:22, 9 June 2023 (UTC)
- I've noticed the same issue. I've had some success using the techniques described here, but it would definitely be more convenient to renew if that's possible. Hatman31 (talk) 01:05, 19 June 2023 (UTC)
- My Newspapers.com subscription also seems to have expired after 1 year.
- Past questions in the archives here say:
- It looks like your last renewal request was just over a year ago so you'll need to request a renewal. You can do this by clicking the Extend or Renew button on the Newspapers.com tile in My Library.
- But I don't see any "extend" or "renew" button, just "Access collection".
- Has the process changed? How do we renew the annual Newspapers Publisher Extra?

ISO standards
Greetings. I'm having trouble finding databases containing ISO standards, such as ISO 80000. For example, I've searched in EBSCO for "ISO 80000" [2]. Unfortunately, it only finds works discussing that standard, not the standard itself. Trying an advanced search with "ISO 80000" restricted to the title doesn't return any results [3]. Does anyone have any advice, please? Thanks. fgnievinski (talk) 00:45, 24 July 2023 (UTC)
- ISO standards are notorious for being "pay to play" - you'll very seldom find a full standard freely available. I think I've stumbled over superseded standards from time to time via Internet Archive, but those are only useful if you know how the standard subsequently changed so that you know you're not referencing an out-of-date part of the standard. --User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 15:13, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for commenting. Indeed, I was able to find older versions at alternative archives. But now I wanted to updated Wikipedia with the latest versions. I'll keep digging. fgnievinski (talk) 02:33, 13 August 2023 (UTC)
I've found the item on WorldCat [4] and at the BSI Group [5]. I've also searched in Compendex but it doesn't seem to provide the full text, only a link to BSI. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. fgnievinski (talk) 03:08, 1 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Fgnievinski it's available at the British Library but you can't download it, so I can make the relevant notes if that's all you need but otherwise the above advice stands. – Isochrone (T) 18:18, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Isochrone: Thanks for the note. Would it be possible to obtain access for browsing online (without downloading) the ISO standards held at the BL, please? fgnievinski (talk) 03:19, 13 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Fgnievinski unfortunately not as it's only accessible on secured BL computers in facility, so I understand if you'd prefer another way of applicable – Isochrone (T) 10:20, 13 August 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for the clarification, I better understand the access limitations now. I've googled for "iso standards library site:edu" [6] and confirmed even major universities have hurdles providing access to ISO for their students. E.g., the MIT provides access only in print, purchased upon request [7]. The only possibility for online access seems to be from the ASTM [8], as "ASTM has partnered with AENOR and offers all European Normative Standards (ENs) as well as all European ISO-adopted Standards." [9] Any chance TWL might be able to provide access to ASTM service, possibly via a physical library, please? fgnievinski (talk) 17:04, 13 August 2023 (UTC)

British Newspaper Archive email
If you have access to the British Newspaper Archive through The Wikipedia Library, you may have just received an email stating that the subscription cost will be increasing. As far as we understand it, this is an email sent to all users with a BNA account, and does not mean that you will be charged any money for your BNA access. When your 12-month voucher code expires, you will not be charged any money and can simply ask us for a new voucher code to continue receiving free access. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 10:39, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks, that's what I figured. They don't have any credit card or other payment method on file for me, anyway, so I wasn't concerned that I'd be getting an unexpected charge. But it's nice to know it was a universal email. Penny Richards (talk) 16:32, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
Sciencedirect/Elsevier journals not available
I've noticed recently that I am capable of logging into Wikipedia's Elsevier/ScienceDirect proxy, but that pretty much all of the journals that I was easily able to access maybe a week ago are now no longer available. Has the license expired like the OUP issue above, or is this just on my end? Hemiauchenia (talk) 22:51, 14 June 2023 (UTC)
- Here's an example paper that I was able to access in the last few months but am no longer able to [10]. Can I get independent confirmation? Hemiauchenia (talk) 01:41, 17 June 2023 (UTC)
- @Hemiauchenia: can confirm, I can no longer access journals on ScienceDirect that I could before either. I was able to read this article in full just a month ago, but now a notice states "Wikimedia Foundation does not subscribe to this content on ScienceDirect". Monster Iestyn (talk) 16:04, 28 June 2023 (UTC)
- I've confirmed this now with other people also. There was always some stuff that you couldn't read on Wikipedia's subscription (like Cell Press e.g. Current Biology), but it seems like now that Wikipedia has no access to any closed access sciencedirect material, which makes the proxy effectively pointless. Eligibility to TWL
Why a user must have an account for 6 months to access it? My account is four months old and want to try it out. Toadette (chat)/(logs) 18:19, 16 September 2023 (UTC)
- @ToadetteEdit We require this because the library's content is acquired through partnerships with the content publishers. They provide access for free, and therefore need some guarantees that the access won't be available to anyone who signs up for a free Wikipedia account (which would be equivalent to simply making all their content available for free to anyone). To make them comfortable, we found that '6 months' sounds reasonable as a length of time for someone to be editing before they gain access to the library. This still means that tens of thousands of editors can use the library. Unfortunately you'll just have to be patient for another couple of months! Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 11:24, 18 September 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks, I'll wait patiently. Toadette (chat)/(logs) 11:49, 18 September 2023 (UTC)

Can't register or make a clipping onto newspapers.com
Similar to the issue described over in Archive 8 in March 2023 and seemingly the same issue recently listed on the Newspapers.com talk page itself, it also appears I can't make a clipping on newspapers.com either. It seemingly has gotten access to the Hull Daily Mail, and when I try to register it, it prompts me to register. So I type in my e-mail tied with my Wikipedia account, and an error appears. Strangely, the error is offset far to the right, leaving my only information being "ERROR for [...] Invalid do", so after a bit of Inspect Element finding, it appears that it is an error related to an invalid 'grecaptcha' response.
Which is strange, because I never got a Captcha in the first place, and I also don't really remember signing up, or attempting to sign up to newspapers.com in recent memory. Am I also doing something wrong here, or is there something slightly borked in the system? For reference, I'm operating, as far as I know, on both the most recent versions of Safari and Google Chrome on my MacBook. Hullian111 (talk) 16:27, 23 September 2023 (UTC)

It just takes me to a page that says "www.newspapers.com needs to review the security of your connection before proceeding" and then nothing ever happens. There's no box to click or anything like similar sites. @Samwalton9 (WMF): Do you have any idea what's going on with this database access? SilverserenC 00:04, 27 September 2023 (UTC)
- @Hullian111, Silverseren, BeanieFan11, Jacona, Maile66, and Vaticidalprophet: Confirming that this seems to be a Newspapers.com-specific issue, and we'll be looking into it ASAP. Please subscribe to the Phabricator task T322916 for further updates. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 13:31, 27 September 2023 (UTC)
- @Samwalton9 (WMF) Seeing as how this looks like it might go on for some time, what workarounds would you suggest for citing newspapers.com in light of this current lockout? I'm currently sat on a number of PDFs that I've handily created from clippings of articles that I'd like to use on Wikipedia, yet I don't really know how to make them verifiable citations while I can't use the clipping tools on the newspapers.com website. Would I just cite them as regular newspaper articles with "via newspapers.com" attached to the end of the citation, albeit without the url for the time being? Or are there better methods? Hullian111 (talk) 11:38, 30 September 2023 (UTC)
- How long could this go on? I've got work requiring Newspapers.com that I need to get done... BeanieFan11 (talk) 14:48, 30 September 2023 (UTC)
- That does seem like the best option for now, just not including the url field in the citation. And then adding it in with the clipping link once we have access later. SilverserenC 15:42, 30 September 2023 (UTC)
- @Silver seren and Hullian111: How would that work, as I can't access the website at all so I don't know how I'd get to see the news pages I need? BeanieFan11 (talk) 21:35, 30 September 2023 (UTC)
- On the pages themselves, there's an option to clip save selected areas or a full page as either PNG or PDF on your computer, the latter of which saves publication information (i.e. work, date, page number) for later reference. I just so happened to do the former for a whole host of pages before access went down, knowing that I'd get back to them and save them as official clippings when I can create a newspapers.com account, so unfortunately, if you haven't used that method for 'offline' clippings, I don't think you'll be getting that info in much of a hurry. Hullian111 (talk) 21:40, 30 September 2023 (UTC)
- @Hullian111: I never thought to do that... grrr... do you have any idea of how long it could take to fix the issue - days, weeks, months? I'm admittedly getting a bit impatient here, as I've got a decent amount of articles I'm hoping to get done soon that I need the website for... BeanieFan11 (talk) 21:46, 30 September 2023 (UTC)
- @BeanieFan11 Out of curiosity, you wouldn't have access to a seven-day trial of newspapers.com? That's what shows up on my end when logged out. Hullian111 (talk) 08:50, 1 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Hullian111: I do have access to a seven-day trial. BeanieFan11 (talk) 20:24, 4 October 2023 (UTC)

- ...this is going to cost me a chance to win the WikiCup if this isn't fixed soon... ugh... BeanieFan11 (talk) 01:00, 8 October 2023 (UTC)
- BeanieFan11, don’t know what that is, but I do feel your pain. This makes me more cognizant of what an awesome tool newspapers.com is when it is working. — Jacona (talk) 01:28, 8 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Jacona: BTW the WikiCup is an annual ten-month competition for the most productive editors - I've done extensive work this year in order to qualify for the finals, and then this happened... BeanieFan11 (talk) 01:37, 8 October 2023 (UTC)
- @BeanieFan11 Sorry for the delay on this - we're at the mercy of Newspapers.com to fix the problem. Thankfully we're in touch with them and I just posted a brief update in the Phabricator ticket. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 10:52, 10 October 2023 (UTC)

- @Hullian111, Silver seren, Jacona, Maile66, Vaticidalprophet, Ekmz, KatoKungLee, and BeanieFan11: Good news - Newspapers.com is now working again! Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 14:38, 10 October 2023 (UTC)
- Samwalton9, hallelujah! Thanks! And thank you newspapers.com for providing us free access to this incredibly valuable resource!!! — Jacona (talk) 14:57, 10 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Samwalton9 (WMF) - Thanks! KatoKungLee (talk) 14:57, 10 October 2023 (UTC)
- Excellent, thank you! ...my WikiCup hopes are still alive! BeanieFan11 (talk) 15:04, 10 October 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you Samwalton9. I've been watching the developments on this issue and can finally access the articles needed for completing a GA nominee for Women in Green's October editathon, that was on-hold, so to speak, for lack of access to this vital resource. Thank you for fixing the problem! SusunW (talk) 16:29, 10 October 2023 (UTC)
- Oh thank goodness for that. Well, time to get that newspapers.com account going and make some clippings! Hullian111 (talk) 17:00, 10 October 2023 (UTC)
- Yay! Thank goodness. I was on the verge of having to try and source things though...Google searches. D: SilverserenC 19:44, 10 October 2023 (UTC)
No access to book anymore with Oxford Academic
I believe that I downloaded many books in the past through the collection Oxford Academic that were not free or opensource (under the green open lock), but now no book are available except the free and the open source. Did something change or am I mistaken and it was never possible? I do not know if it is related, but a link such as this one would have worked until recently, but now I get the reply

Whereas a similar link for Jstor still works. I checked that with two browsers: Firefox 118.0.1 on Ubuntu and Tor 13.0 on Ubuntu. Dominic Mayers (talk) 01:38, 16 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Dominic Mayers: Thanks for reporting this problem. We can reproduce the issue - I've filed T348967 and we'll contact OUP to try to get this resolved. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 10:33, 16 October 2023 (UTC)
- It might not be important, but I noticed that the domain academic-oup-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org behaves differently than global-oup-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org. With the former, you can access the site, but the books are not accessible. With the latter, we get the error message. Dominic Mayers (talk) 01:03, 18 October 2023 (UTC)
Appearing on Google Scholar searches
Is it possible to add Wiki Library to the results of a Google Scholar search? There are some journal articles in the library that are behind a pay wall on the journal website. Often the authors make the articles free to view on Research Gate or JSTOR for registered users and Scholar highlights these on their results as well. I usually contribute on Wikispecies and full text articles are a real bonus. I use Chrome mostly if that makes a difference. Thank you for your time. Andyboorman (talk) 13:16, 11 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Andyboorman Thanks for this suggestion! We're going to pursue this and try to get the library added as an option in Scholar. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 13:51, 17 October 2023 (UTC)
- That would be nice, too - I often need to hop from GS to the library. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 14:09, 17 October 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for your help on this. Andyboorman (talk) 15:16, 17 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Andyboorman: See my post below. With this you can click on links in gscholar and it will take you to the full text on TWL. SmartSE (talk) 14:17, 20 October 2023 (UTC)

Citing deep links?
Is there a preferred method for linking to sources that are deep within (e.g.) NewspaperArchive? At one extreme, the URL I get is dependent, if not on being logged in with my personal Wikipedia account, at least on having Library access. At the other extreme, I could just use bibliographic data with no links whatsoever. Is there a middle ground? DS (talk) 03:39, 17 October 2023 (UTC)
- Are you making clippings at NewspaperArchive? I do that, then I link to the clipping, after stripping out the TWL parts of the URL (so that the link starts "www.newspaperarchive.com/"). It's not quite as user-friendly as the clippings function on Newspapers.com, but it's doable. Penny Richards (talk) 15:55, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
- The bookmarklet works for NewspaperArchive as well as Newspapers.com, and could be customized for other sites. @DS, let me know if you need any assistance setting it up. Nick Number (talk) 19:55, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
- I just did an AWB run after some testing to confirm (see Special:Diff/1181129650). Basically, you can just find-replace
www-newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org
withnewspapers.com
, and I assume the same is true of other TWL deep links. I agree that this is a huge pain, though -- it might be worth setting up a bot to handle this stuff. jp×g 01:37, 21 October 2023 (UTC)
