Update on PressPass, and fixing busted newspapers.com proxy links
I have made an update to https://github.com/jp-x-g/PressPass/ that allows it to work with the goofy proxy URLS (i.e. newspapers.com
becoming www-newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/
). However, there is an issue, which is that this apparently busts the hell out of all citations -- there's already a severe problem with the new n.com layout busting the clipping citegen link, so this is just too much for me to deal with right now. I am considering just making a freaking bot to go through and AWB-substitute www-newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/
withnewspapers.com
. What do people think of this? jp×g 01:13, 21 October 2023 (UTC)
- Note: I've just fixed PressPass so that it works on the new clipping pages, and also it fixes the proxy-URL gobbledygook. jp×g 02:17, 21 October 2023 (UTC)

Access problem (ProQuest)
I'm having a problem accessing ProQuest at the moment - it's not taking me to a landing page at all. Is it just me, or are others also having problems? And does anyone know if this is just temporary, or an ongoing issue? Thanks - SchroCat (talk) 17:12, 1 November 2023 (UTC)
- I'm also unable to access ProQuest. Here's the error message:
- "This site can’t be reached

- DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN" — Grand'mere Eugene (talk) 18:02, 1 November 2023 (UTC)
- Yeah, that's the message I get too. Hopefully it's just a temporary glitch. Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 19:40, 1 November 2023 (UTC)

Access Problem (?) on Perlego
Trying to access this book (https://www.perlego.com/book/2526644/the-sacred-band-three-hundred-theban-lovers-fighting-to-save-greek-freedom-pdf): I can only read the first chapter on Perlego; trying to go further asks me to sign up for their mailing list so that they can send me one free book (presumably this one). Not sure if this is a feature of our access level or a bug? A book I read previously (https://ereader.perlego.com/1/book/3202652/8) has all chapters working fine. Any gadgets to convert links?
Are there any gadgets for converting links to the TWL proxies? It would be great if I didn't have to visit each publisher's page and then search for the article every time I wanted to read something. I could probably do something for myself using browser redirect tools, but I wanted to see if anyone else has done something first? SmartSE (talk) 15:47, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
- Ok well hopefully the answer is no, and I haven't wasted my time on this, but you can download and import this file into the REDIRECTOR add on for Firefox and Chrome and it will redirect you to the full articles e.g. doi:10.1016/j.drugpo.2010.11.001 to https://www-sciencedirect-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/science/article/pii/S0955395910001581?via%3Dihub. I've done it for Cambridge, Wiley, Annual Reviews, Springer, Sciencedirect, BMJ, Science, Nature and PNAS but there are probably more that could be added. SmartSE (talk) 14:06, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
- Cool. Here's JSTOR, Project MUSE, Taylor and Francis, Oxford Reference (tested). I don't have a github account:

- I don't see that escaping of "/" is required in regex, but it's been a while. These work for me.
- Although not a javascript gadget, this functionality should definitely be listed somewhere permanent!
- PS if you're willing to allow me to commit this on github, I will make an account and try that for the first time... and add a few more. Outriggr (talk) 22:52, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
- It seems like https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0032063309000269 for example is not properly modified from Google Scholar, though. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 09:33, 21 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Outriggr: Thanks for those - probably easier for me to just copy them over manually (I'll do it shortly), but if you want to submit a pull request for others later on, feel free. SmartSE (talk) 11:09, 21 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Jo-Jo Eumerus: Thanks for letting me know. I'll update the json soon, but if you've already imported it, you can change the include pattern field to this and it will work:
(?<=\www.sciencedirect.com)/science/article/(?:abs/)?pii\/(.+)
SmartSE (talk) 11:09, 21 October 2023 (UTC)- Even with that regex, https://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=de&as_sdt=0%2C5&q=Calculation+of+the+enrichment+of+the+giant+planet+envelopes+during+the+%E2%80%9Clate+heavy+bombardment%E2%80%9D&btnG= does not point to the correct page. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 11:13, 21 October 2023 (UTC)
- Afraid I don't understand - the link I get from that search is https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0032063309000269 and that redirects correctly. SmartSE (talk) 11:18, 21 October 2023 (UTC)
- I dunno, perhaps because for me it first goes through a login link? Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 09:10, 22 October 2023 (UTC)
- Ahh yes - if you're not already logged in to TWL, it will take you to the login screen, but once you're logged in, if you return to the search it should work. SmartSE (talk) 10:07, 22 October 2023 (UTC)
- I think it's actually a separate login to ScienceDirect that is causing the problem, not the TWL login. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 06:30, 23 October 2023 (UTC)
- For whatever reason, even with logging in to TWL the links don't redirect: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/0031018287900484 and https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/0377027389900620 Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 08:50, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
- This link is a variant of what SmartSE set up. If you go into the plugin and change "include pattern" to
https?://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/(.+)
and "Redirect to" tohttps://www-sciencedirect-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/science/article/$1
it should work. - SmartSE, the above URLs are different as they include "/abs/", so I just made the regex grab everything after "article". Outriggr (talk) 16:52, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
- Still doesn't work. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 09:40, 26 October 2023 (UTC)

@Smartse: I have a few more here. The first one is an update to Cambridge that works with books too (e.g. link [1]). It is now less specific than your version for the journal URLs, but I don't think that hurts anything. (I didn't escape periods in my contributions; OTOH, your "/" escapes are unnecessary I think, so we'll call it even :-) The rest are new.
I'd work on a few more but this is probably the majority of the most-used resources now (except perhaps the newspaper sites, and some more Oxford stuff). It would be cool to see if more than 3 people are going to use this great idea! I mean for me, to click a citation and land on a logged-in and accessible database, without having to think of the Library, what's available on it, etc etc, may well change the way I use the Library. Anyway, here's the code:
{ "description": "cambridge", "exampleUrl": "https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/weed-science/article/abs/glyphosate-environmental-fate-and-impact/85C5628F98E45060AE0B7046F11361E2", "exampleResult": "https://www-cambridge-org.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/core/journals/weed-science/article/abs/glyphosate-environmental-fate-and-impact/85C5628F98E45060AE0B7046F11361E2", "error": null,"includePattern": "https://www\\.cambridge\\.org/core/(books
This template format when "unhidden" hiccups on the pipe character (like last time) so, obviously, copy from the wikitext. Regards Outriggr (talk) 20:43, 22 October 2023 (UTC) P.S. Just now I found that the existing Wiley rule doesn't work for all cases (e.g. [2]). I simplified yours, as the most specific subdomain (eg "resjournals") can match, but not be included in the redirect - it will still work. Outriggr (talk) 22:16, 22 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Outriggr: Thanks - I'll update tonight. My regex is rubbish... thankfully chatgpt can help make something functional even if it's not the best! The Wiley ones are tricky but that's good news that the subdomain isn't actually needed. And yep, I agree, I have posted at WT:MED and WT:PLANTS about it already and there are probably other Wikiprojects where it would be helpful to post. We can also pop something in the Signpost at some point. SmartSE (talk) 08:38, 23 October 2023 (UTC)
- Noting that https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/j.1399-0004.1993.tb04426.x apparently isn't caught by the regex. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 09:13, 29 October 2023 (UTC)
- As with all the examples you've given here (except the last one I replied to) - I clicked on that and was redirected. I'm using Firefox on Windows.
- My current 'include pattern' for Wiley is
https://([a-z0-9]+\.)?onlinelibrary\.wiley\.com/doi/(.+)
(I suggested this update above and don't know if SmartSE has updated it on their Github page); and 'redirect to' ishttps://onlinelibrary-wiley-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/doi/$2
. Outriggr (talk) 18:28, 29 October 2023 (UTC)https:\/\/([a-zA-Z0-9.-]+)\.onlinelibrary\.wiley\.com\/doi\/abs\/(.+)
andhttps:\/\/([a-zA-Z0-9.-]+)\.onlinelibrary\.wiley\.com\/doi\/abs\/(.+)
, but let's see if your pattern works. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 18:40, 29 October 2023 (UTC)
- I've been using Redirector for a while, but I didn't post here because I'm normally behind the times with technology so I assumed it was something everyone was doing. Anyway, in case it hasn't occurred to you – rather than setting up individual redirects for every publisher, I just redirect
https://doi.org/*
tohttps://doi-org.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/$1
. That catches most of them. Sojourner in the earth (talk) 07:22, 5 November 2023 (UTC)
Just seeing this now, but wanted to add that Zotero (open source citation manager) has a browser extension that does auto-redirection to an academic proxy, so instead of needing to change the links in your browser via script, any time you navigate to relevant links, the extension will redirect you to go through the TWL proxy. Should be a lot simpler as this is what academics use with their own university proxy systems. czar 16:12, 8 November 2023 (UTC)
Getting access with new account
I previously edited under the account Scorpions13256, but I scrambled my password due to my rapidly deteriorating mental health. However, not long after that, things suddenly got better. The reason for my decline will forever remain a mystery, but I want to know if there is any way I can get access to JSTOR before February. Scorpions1325 (talk) 18:38, 5 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Scorpions1325 We can provide access earlier, but only if you're able to provide some proof that you own the previous account - you can email this to wikipedialibrarywikimedia.org if you're able. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 12:44, 27 November 2023 (UTC)
Getting access
Hi, I have 500+ edits, 10+ edits in the last month, and no blocks. The only criteria I don't fulfill is the minimum account age of 6 months, my account is only 3 months old. However, on the TWL settings tab, I see a prompt that says administrators can grant me access if they so wish. What would be the procedure for this, can anyone help out? Thanks in advance. Matarisvan (talk) 09:36, 9 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Matarisvan Hi - unfortunately we generally don't provide access earlier than the criteria so you'll need to wait for the 6 month eligibility period to be reached. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 12:43, 27 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hi, thanks for the reply, I thought I was not going to get one. I did think I was going to have to wait 6 months, but I had hoped I wouldn't have to, because I wanted to contribute to articles with paywalled papers I had been saving for later. Is there no way I could get early access, like @Scorpions1325 could get in the above section? I also have an account which is more than 6 months old but I lost access to it. Matarisvan (talk) 15:12, 27 November 2023 (UTC)
Tripped an automated security rule
Hi, I am getting an error message on trying to access collections:
You have tripped an automated security rule in EZProxy. Common reasons for this might be trying to download too many items in a short period of time or using a web proxy.
I haven't used the Library for at least a week (was getting the same error at that point) and am not using a proxy. I was using it without problems up until about a month ago. Error message appears after clicking "access Library" (or access collections, not sure what the text is) and after selecting a collection. It doesn't seem to make a difference which collection I try to access, though I haven't tried them all.
Any advice appreciated. Thanks. Tacyarg (talk) 09:28, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Tacyarg The reason looks to be downloading slightly too many (or too large) files in a short timeframe. I've removed the block on your account so the library should work again for you now. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 15:43, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you, this is great, all working again. Tacyarg (talk) 17:50, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
The Wikipedia Library emails are currently broken for many users
This is a quick notice to let you know that Wikipedia Library email notifications are not currently working as intended. You may not receive emails such as application approvals or access instructions until the issue is resolved. We will endeavour to manually re-send emails on a regular basis but apologise if the service isn't reliable over the coming weeks. We're exploring some other options for notifying users, such as using Echo notifications and directing users towards information in the library, and we'll let you know when we have opportunities for input into those potential solutions.
If you have any questions or expected to receive an email that you didn't, please let me know. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 12:36, 5 December 2023 (UTC)
The Wikipedia Library now available as a link in Google Scholar
A quick announcement that you can now add The Wikipedia Library as a link from Google Scholar results! This should match our holdings and send you through the library's proxy, so if you find a result in Scholar that's in the library, you can get quick and direct access to it. Thanks to Andyboorman for the suggestion, and courtesy ping to Jo-Jo Eumerus and SmartSE.
- Go to https://scholar.google.com/ while logged in to a Google account.
- Click the hamburger menu in the top corner and click Settings
- In the 'Library links' menu, search for Wikipedia
- Check the box next to "The Wikipedia Library - The Wikipedia Library"
- Click Save.
- You should now see "The Wikipedia Library" links next to applicable search results.
One minor issue with this is that the first screen you'll end up on from the results page will usually error, and you need to click the "open the page in a new window" link at the top. We're looking into this to see if we can resolve the problem. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 16:50, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks! I'll see if it works properly tomorrow... Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 17:02, 20 November 2023 (UTC)

- @Jo-Jo Eumerus Yeah this is just how that service is set up - we had to make the request of EBSCO to link with Google Scholar. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 12:50, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Samwalton9 (WMF) When I click on the "Wikipedia Library" link on Google Scholar, it prompts me to login with an EBSCO account & password. I don't think this is the expected behaviour. OhanaUnitedTalk page 20:45, 25 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hmm, correct, it should take you to log in to The Wikipedia Library if you're not already logged in. I wonder if you could copy the URLs you're being sent to here to help us diagnose the problem. When I search for 'test' I see "The logrank test" as the first result. It has an nih.gov link and The Wikipedia Library. Clicking it sends me to the library to log in. After login I end up here as expected. Could you describe the steps/URLs you're sent through? Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 12:42, 27 November 2023 (UTC)

Collection access
After logging into Wikipedia Library, I cannot open any of the collections. Any error message is received ie. www-jstor-org.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org didn’t send any data. Similar message for each collection with just the collection name changing. What could the problem be? Thanks. Conlinp (talk) 21:22, 7 December 2023 (UTC)

Newspapers.com is down.
@Samwalton9 (WMF) Queries started on TWL domains are given a failure message for me, and replacing the URL of a regular newspapers.com search (which works just fine) with a TWL domain also gives that message. Mach61 (talk) 06:28, 16 January 2024 (UTC)

- I have cancelled it. On 1 January I got an email saying: “Your Pro subscription will renew on 8 January 2024, granting you another 12 months of access to our vast record collection, handy family tree builder and so much more.
- Because you’ve opted for auto-renewal in your account settings, we’ll take payment on 8 January 2024 and as our way of saying thank you for your loyalty, we'll apply a 15% discount. With billions of records at your fingertips, what fascinating discoveries will you make?”
- Can you please resolve this for me?
- TrottieTrue (talk) 14:01, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
- @TrottieTrue Absolutely, and my apologies that you're having to deal with this. We had a lot of confusion around the codes at the outset of the partnership and weren't made aware of the proper procedure for activating them until recently. You (and all other BNA/FMP users) can expect to receive an email from me later today with more information.
- Have you been charged money, or have you just received an invoice? Did you enter credit card details into the Find My Past website? If you'd rather discuss this over email please feel free to contact me at swaltonwikimedia.org. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 14:24, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks Sam. I don’t appear to have been charged anything - it doesn’t look like FMP have any payment details for me anyway. I just got an invoice. I look forward to hearing from you about this being resolved. TrottieTrue (talk) 14:56, 9 January 2024 (UTC)

- In the interests of transparency, and in case anyone else comes here facing the same issue, I'm copying the email I just sent to all BNA/FMP users below:
- As a result of miscommunication when we set up this partnership, we were not made aware of the correct process for activating your codes. Activating them in the intended manner could result in you being charged money or sent an invoice when your subscription renews automatically. Please read on for more information.
- The email containing your access code stated that it should be activated at https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/coupon or https://www.findmypast.co.uk/voucher. This was incorrect, though some users may have been able to activate codes here under certain circumstances. The codes are actually intended to be used as a ‘promo code’ when activating a paid subscription to these websites on the relevant subscription pages (https://britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/account/subscribe or https://www.findmypast.co.uk/subscribe). The codes provide a full discount on a yearly membership. Unfortunately this requires you to enter credit card details and automatically puts your account on a yearly billing cycle.
- If you have activated a code in this way please follow these instructions to cancel auto-renewal for BNA and FMP respectively: https://help-and-advice.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/knowledgebase/articles/348626-why-did-my-subscription-renew-automatically and https://www.findmypast.co.uk/help/articles/360002795638. Even if you haven’t entered credit card details you may still be sent an invoice if you redeemed a code.
- We apologise for the confusion on this - we had a number of frustrating issues with the voucher codes when initially setting up this partnership and were not made fully aware of the required process. Our own testing of earlier batches of codes worked as anticipated on the coupon/voucher pages and didn’t require us to subscribe, which is how we missed these issues.
- We’re following up with Find My Past (who operate both websites) to uncover whether there’s a better way to provide this access which does not require credit card details or signing users up to an automatically renewing subscription. Wikipedia Library access should be free for all users and we don’t want you to have to provide personal information or risk being charged money. No other library partner requires this and we actively avoid any access methods which require personal information or the risk of being charged.
- If you have been sent invoices or charged any money for these accounts please let me know and I’ll do what I can to get you refunded.
- Apologies again and I’m happy to answer any other questions you might have. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 13:30, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
- Credit card details were also required to activate an Invaluable account when the Library offered these. I declined to give mine, and my account there was never activated. Ironic, as I was the originator of the relationship with them. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:10, 24 January 2024 (UTC)
- Unfortunately myself and another affected user no longer have access to FMP or the BNA - I guess this affects others who have cancelled their subscriptions as per Sam’s advice. I hope it’s resolved soon. TrottieTrue (talk) 15:29, 24 January 2024 (UTC)

Before posting the above, I wrote to FMP querying the invoice. They replied:
Looking at your account I can see that your 1 year free access has ended and the system had attempted to renew it at the normal price as the automatic renewal was on within your account.
I have cancelled this for you now, if you're still entitled to the free subscription you would have to let the person who originally set this up for you know that your access has now ended.
My subscription has indeed been terminated. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:25, 25 January 2024 (UTC)
Cloudflare issue with the Newspapers.com domain
If I go to:
https://wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org/users/my_library/
and then click the "Access collection" button for newspapers.com, it opens the URL:
https://www-newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/
Which now errors out with some kind of Cloudflare issue:
www.newspapers.com
Checking if the site connection is secure
www.newspapers.com needs to review the security of your connection before proceeding.
Performance & security by Cloudflare
If I wait for about 10 seconds, it then says:
This check is taking longer than expected. Check your Internet connection and refresh the page if the issue persists.
I cannot currently access the wikipedia version of Newspapers.com. The normal version of the site works fine, but we no longer have access to the site functionality.

Newspapers.com
Quick question...my Newspapers.com access seems to have expired; when I last tried to use it a few weeks ago I had full access, but now I've been downgraded back to "registered guest". If I'm logged in I basically can't see anything without getting an "upgrade subcription to access this page" popup, and if I try to use the library link instead of logging in I can see articles but can't clip them for use as referencing links unless I log into the account that I can't see anything in.
But the library has been reorganized since the last time I had to request renewal, and I'm struggling to figure out where to actually submit a renewal request: I can see a view my applications link if I'm logged into my library account, but I can't find where to submit an application. So could somebody advise me how to go about submitting a renewal for newspapers.com access? Thanks. Bearcat (talk) 17:20, 7 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Bearcat You should have received an email from us with instructions on how to access Newspapers.com now - it's copied here if you didn't receive it. You should be able to log in to your old account after accessing Newspapers.com via the library, and therefore create clippings as before. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 17:59, 7 February 2024 (UTC)
- Okay, thanks, that worked. If that e-mail went out last summer, I must have either missed or overlooked it given that I was only about five months into a one-year subscription period, so my existing access wasn't impacted at the time. Good thing there was a surviving copy to refer me to. Thanks. Bearcat (talk) 18:20, 7 February 2024 (UTC)
Newspapers.com
@Samwalton9 (WMF): When I go to the publisher extra papers on Newspapers.com (e.g. [3]), I receive a message that I need to "upgrade to a publisher extra subscription" in order to view it - I thought the Wikipedia Library gave access to all newspapers.com pages? BeanieFan11 (talk) 19:39, 7 December 2023 (UTC)
- @BeanieFan11 I also thought this. Let me check with them :) Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 10:26, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Samwalton9 (WMF) I have the same issue. My subscription appears to have expired. If I go via the Wikipedia library page I get access but that is a pain to do all the time. Can you help? Gbawden (talk) 11:26, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Gbawden This is the way that access is now provided to Newspapers.com - you can bookmark https://www-newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/ to go there directly, rather than via the library :) Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 12:35, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
- I apologize if the answer is obvious... Will this allow us to make clippings, and if so, can we do this without our personal email being displayed when someone views the clipping? Fabrickator (talk) 22:26, 3 February 2024 (UTC)
- Fabrickator, sorry in advance for the imprecision, it’s been awhile. You have to take care how you setup your account on newspapers.com so it displays a username instead of an email. Sorry i can’t give better instructions at the moment, but at least it’s a clue! — Jacona (talk) 23:03, 3 February 2024 (UTC)

Listing convenience tools
It would be a good idea to have some documentation of tools that can help make access to the resources more convenient, e.g. automatically redirecting pages to the TWL proxy URL. Digging through the talk pages, I've found that Zotero can do this, and there's a javascript bookmark solution described at Meta:Talk:Library Card platform/Design improvements/Archive 1#General design feedback. I also happened upon mention of JPxG's PressPass tool. These and any other tools out there should probably be more visible for new users. --Paul_012 (talk) 10:27, 12 February 2024 (UTC)

Is there any particular reason that Wikipedia:The Wikipedia Library doesn't directly mention the 500 edits/6 months (I think) limit? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:34, 15 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Gråbergs Gråa Sång No particular reason, but they're visible when you click the first, bolded, link on the page, if you're not already logged in. Feel free to add them if you think it would be an improvement! Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 12:30, 15 February 2024 (UTC)

Brill 'full access'
Hi, sorry if this is the wrong place! But a couple of times, I've gone into Brill through TWL to a green-open-padlock full-access item, and it still asks me for a username/password. Which, of course, isn't the WP info, but I have no other. Anything I can do, or is it a different level of access? Thanks for any help! ——Serial 15:06, 16 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Serial Number 54129 I've been largely unable to reproduce this issue unfortunately. Another user shared a URL which asks for a username/password, but I can't encounter it myself so I'm left a little confused - access still seems to mostly be working for me. How to get article text from EBSCO?
I've found an article I want to read in EBSCO (permalink) but all I can see is the catalog entry. How do I get to the actual text of the article? RoySmith (talk) 20:05, 18 March 2024 (UTC)
- That record appears to be only the catalogue entry, I believe drawn from this index. I think based on the content it's actually referencing this article, though the title is different.
- There's a checkbox in the left menu of the results page that lets you limit to only those entries that have full text. Nikkimaria (talk) 22:04, 18 March 2024 (UTC)

Access to Open Library through Wikipedia Library
While trying to add missing citations to Aileen Hernandez at Wikidata I could follow the probable source
Black women in America, 2nd ed.
by Darlene Clark Hine
through ISBN to Black_women_in_America at Open Library, which asks for logging in with Internet Archive account. Can I (and if I can, how) log in through Wikipedia Library, for which I seem to be entitled for?
It is probably unrelated, but might be interesting, that the same ISBN at Google books (where I also tried through all three links on Special:BookSources) just returned book not found, where it was - with some fiddling - at least found elsewhere, even if I couldn't look into it to cite from, yet. Marjan Tomki SI (talk) 11:34, 18 March 2024 (UTC)
- Internet Archive is being sued by publishers, some of which participate in TWL, for providing the exact service you mentioned. Providing access to it through TWL would jeopardize the whole enterprise of TWL. Nardog (talk) 14:01, 18 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Marjan Tomki SI: That would be the 2005 edition. You can access this directly through OpenLibrary using an OpenLibrary login, which is freely available from the openlibrary.org website. There is no requirement that you have WML access to obtain an openlibrary login.
- You can ignore (for the moment, at least) the Hachette lawsuit. Oh, and BTW, be aware that there are often several ISBNs for the same text (presumably different editions if you're talking about the same length ISBN) so it has its purposes, but if the ISBN doesn't allow you to get access, you'll have a hard time being sure that access isn't available using a different ISBN). Fabrickator (talk) 13:21, 25 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Nardog, @Fabrickator: thanks both for answers.
- @Nardog: I get the general meaning, but tried to find the meaning of TWL, gut not yet with a success. Google gives a lot of spam garbage on first pages, and I am neither from US cultural area nor a native English speaker, so didn't quess the correct meaning yet.
- @fabrickator:
- on Open Library login: I saw it, but didn't see it was free, and because I work on WP intermittently and usually not from the same device, and because for verifying on adding sources for citations I seem to be needing several tens of logins and passwords (and I don't carry logins and passwords with me - e.g. skippering a hired sailboat and training a novice skipper, and after looking for weather data at internet caffe in marina if the weather keeps us ashore I could add something to Wikipedia ;-); that's why I tried through WP library.
- I also thought that a lot less documents was digitized in my country than I am now finding is the case. It was google search often giving not found answers when I later found the data could be found targeting more specifically and/or with other tools. When I am working on a specific problem (as now a case about architecture, helping a historian find sources about a particular builder about a century ago, for a peer reviewed publication that will be a reliable source for WP too), I do test if being logged to see if it makes a difference on the results of a search. On that at the moment the result if not yet conclusive.
- I find general google is mostly getting unusable for me. Several decades ago I could use logical operators which either don't work any more, or I can't find the proper part of interface that allow it's use. The so called AI seem's to learn from answers that most people click on, which is not what I rarely look for. But it is not only that the info is not on the top pages; if I go more specifically I get that it found no answers (where, as I mentioned above, I have got answers with other tools, when before recently I thought it was not digitized (yet)). I feel if I search for something specific and unusual google silently assumes it's a typo and goes it's way. If there's a source (or project or...) about better searching (and how to evade traps it seems I'm falling in doing it, I'd be deeply thankful for info (or link) on that.
- Also, personal internet pages (or pages from personal or family enterprises) go offline (when they die, or stop paying for the space for any other reason), or often loose valuable info after they change ownership. The same often happens with enterprise pages after changes of ownership or changes of enterprise policy. When I made a set of links to such contents (regarding permanent anchoring, nautical) some of best info was on a server o someone doing maricultur; reliable info shared (not only how, but all the necessary why to) with no public relations professional bull shit, about what we should by targeting maximizing sales. When it went offline, I couldn't find anything even remotely like the same. In my eyes it is like Library of Alexandria (again), which was not destroyed by any singular cataclysm, but by slow erosion of mouldering papyri and parchments, which were not copied to new ones in time, because either economic power {to feed the scribes etc.), or will to sustain the library also got eroded. The same entropic process probably is/will be the problem with the info on the Internet.
- On ISBN: I understand each edition gets it's ISBN, and your meaning is that the source having one of edition won't need a redundant other edition, and that's why only one edition was found at one source. At the time I trying that for one of the first times and was not sure if I understood procedure correctly (or the procedure had a problem).

Any way for alt accounts to access TWL?
Hello, this is HistoryTheorist's alternate account created at a university library. I do not have access to the internet other than a guest research station so I cannot access my main account for a couple hours until I get home. (I will verify this identity when I get home.) Is there any way for alternate accounts of users with access to the Wikipedia Library to gain access on their alt? ResearchTheorist (talk) 22:33, 27 March 2024 (UTC)
- @ResearchTheorist I'd love to be able to, but unfortunately we currently only have a mechanism to ignore all library criteria, which would effectively give your alt account access forever, regardless of blocks or recent activity levels. That's undesirable, but you're not the first person to ask about this, so I've filed T361200 - we could imagine having a setting to only ignore the minimum activity thresholds in the future. For now you'll need to stick to using your main account for library access, sorry! Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 10:22, 28 March 2024 (UTC)
- Oh well. I guess I'll have to limit a bit of my Wikipedia research to areas where I can get internet access on my main laptop which will preclude the amount of research I'll can do or I can really get extreme on using my alt so that I can use TWL in October. It was worth an ask though. ❤HistoryTheorist❤ 05:04, 29 March 2024 (UTC)
Bad Request errors
I often get errors like https://academic-oup-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/pnasnexus/article/1/2/pgac048/6575909 showing up as https://academic-oup-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/HTTPHandlers/Sigma/LoginHandler.ashx&client_id=ACADEMIC&state=8cc77f69-008c-45cd-992a-425825b8d29fredirecturl=httpszazjzjacademiczyoupzycomzwwikipedialibraryzwidmzwoclczworgzjCustomErrorzsstatusCodezr404zn404z003Bhttpzazjzjacademiczwoupzwcomza80zjHTTPHandlerszjSigmazjLoginHandlerzwashxznclientzxidzrACADEMICznstatezr88c79896zy3a02zy4fdbzyb6c8zy8a4d5dfc9187redirecturlzrhttpszzazzjzzjacademiczzyoupzzycomzzwwikipedialibraryzzwidmzzwoclczzworgzzjpnasnexuszzjarticlezzj1zzj2zzjpgac048zzj6575909 what is going on with them? Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 07:14, 8 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Jo-Jo Eumerus Hm, I'm not immediately sure, I can ask our engineers. One common 'bad request' issue can be solved by clearing your cookies for oclc.org so I'd give that a try in the first instance and see if this keeps happening. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 12:05, 8 April 2024 (UTC)
- That didn't fix it, sorry. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 16:17, 8 April 2024 (UTC)
- Alright, I'll get back to you when I've heard from someone who knows more. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 16:29, 8 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Jo-Jo Eumerus,
- As @Samwalton9 (WMF) those invalid request errors tend to pop up when there is a state issue for our proxy in the web browser. The proxying and redirecting requires a set of cookies that can get too large for browsers to handle. That second URL looks like it has truncated data that probably shouldn't have gone into the redirect target. As a troubleshooting step, could you try accessing this resource from another browser, preferably one that you haven't used with the library before? JSherman (WMF) (talk) 18:08, 10 April 2024 (UTC)
- Chrome sends me to the login screen rather than the error message, for what it's worth. I am wondering if the cookie maker does not handle redirects gracefully. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 06:55, 11 April 2024 (UTC)

The Library on Wikipedia
For some reason, I haven't been able to access the Wikipedia Library, it says I have to have this account for 6 months and to have 500 edits, I mean it's kinda insane to have 500 edits tbh, I have only 100 something edits, and I had the account for what a month, 2 months now? Now, I'm not trying to be rude, you know. Just saying. How do you get 500 edits? Starixxgamerrix (talk) 18:37, 6 April 2024 (UTC)
- By being persistent? If the threshold was lower, it would be too easy to access for the content providers to agree to, and then the Wikipedia Library wouldn't exist at all.Hemiauchenia (talk) 19:07, 6 April 2024 (UTC)
- True, thanks for that, I will keep on trying Starixxgamerrix (talk) 19:11, 6 April 2024 (UTC)
- Agreed fully with Hemiauchenia, Starixxgamerrix. I'd just like to add, the progress Wikipedia Library has made with the agreements is incredible. When I first applied for access to Wikipedia Library, you had to request access to most databases individually, explaining how you'd use the content specifically in that database to help your editing. Now, an account in this program gives access to the vast majority of the databases instantly. -- Zanimum (talk) 12:15, 27 April 2024 (UTC)
- "Insane"? A lot of us do more than 500 edits in the space of a week or so, and thousands of editors do it within a month. And if you've been doing about 100 edits in the space of approx. 1.5 months, but you can't get access until you've had the acount for 6 months, then you'll reach 500 edits not long after having an active account for the required time period, if you keep editing at about the same rate. I.e., there is no problem here. — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼 14:57, 27 April 2024 (UTC)
