Materials in foreign languages
Hey Bean, there's two things you can do:
1) If you search online, there's image to text capture websites and programs like this: https://brandfolder.com/workbench/extract-text-from-image. You take a screenshot, upload it and it may be able to grab the text. You then can run the text through Google Translate. Here is a paragraph of what I got from the right column of the 2nd page of https://www-newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/image/640790774/?terms=turnverein%20tritschler&match=1. I have Snagit, so I don't need to use this as much.
2) Google Translate has its own app on mobile phones. There's a camera feature and if you use it, it will take a picture with the text translation. You can then copy what it translated to the app and paste it somewhere.
Hope that helps.

- Thanks, I knew about Google Translate but not about the places that can read the text from screenshots. BeanieFan11 (talk) 16:52, 10 August 2023 (UTC)

Distinguishing pages
Hello! I am wondering how you would go about distinguishing between Newberry head coach Todd Knight and Ouachita Baptist head coach Todd Knight.
I was thinking by birth year but I can not find definitively when each coach was born, and it appears they were also both born in the 1960s.
Thank you! Thetreesarespeakingtome (talk) 21:50, 13 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Thetreesarespeakingtome: Interesting. Two long-time sub-Division I head coaches actively serving with the same name born in the same decade! If you don't know the birth dates, some disambiguation in the form of Todd Knight (Newberry coach)/Todd Knight (Ouachita Baptist coach) might work. @Jweiss11: Might be able to help. New page reviewer granted
Hi BeanieFan11. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers
" user group. Please check back at the permissions page in case your user right is time-limited or probationary. This user group allows you to review new pages through the Curation system and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or nominate them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is vital to maintaining the integrity of the encyclopedia. If you have not already done so, you must read the tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the deletion policy. If you need any help or want to discuss the process, you are welcome to use the new page reviewer talk page or ask via the NPP Discord. In addition, please remember:
- Be nice to new editors. They are usually not aware that they are doing anything wrong. Do make use of the message feature when tagging pages for maintenance so that they are aware.
- You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted. Please be formal and polite in your approach to them – even if they are not.
- If you are not sure what to do with a page, don't review it – just leave it for another reviewer.
- Accuracy is more important than speed. Take your time to patrol each page. Steps such as checking for copyright violations using Earwig's copyright violation detector, checking for duplicate articles, and evaluating sources (both in the article, and if needed, via a Google search) for compliance with the general notability guideline are mandatory and will take a few minutes per article.
- Please review some of our flowcharts (1, 2) to help ensure you don't forget any required steps.
- Use the message feature to communicate with article creators and offer advice as much as possible.
The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you also may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In cases of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, or long-term inactivity, the right may be withdrawn at administrator discretion. If you can read any languages other than English, please add yourself to the list of new page reviewers with language proficiencies. — Ingenuity (talk • contribs) 22:26, 17 August 2023 (UTC)

Football in the early 1920s
Not intended to argue, simply to enlighten. We had a discussion recently in which you expressed skepticism as to my assertion that the NFL "wasn't even the highest league of football in 1922, as leagues like the Big Ten had far more prestige at that time". This was pretty clearly the case, as Big Ten games and players (likewise for Notre Dame, Princeton, Yale, and others) received far, far more press coverage and had dramatically better attendance than NFL games. The NFL was considered vulgar in those years, and many of the top players reacted with disdain at the idea of playing professional football. Here are a few passages that you might find helpful:
- "In the early days of the NFL, college football was king and playing professionally was not something most players aspired to do." https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/2019/08/08/nfl-at-100-how-college-football-became-pipeline-to-nfl/39929585/
- "In the 1920s and 1930s, college football rivaled Major League Baseball as the nation's most popular sport and, by the mid 1930s, it grossed more money than Major League Baseball, professional hockey, professional boxing, and the NFL combined." From Sandlots to the Super Bowl: The National Football League, Craig R. Coenen, p 98.
- "By 1920, pro football remained thoroughly overshadowed by the college game and a bastion confined mostly to small Midwestern industrial cities. ... Only after the signing of college phenom Red Grange in 1925 did pro football begin to increase in popularity." The Birth of the National Football League https://www.history.com/news/the-birth-of-the-national-football-league
- "In the first 90 years of football, college football was far more popular than pro football ... Ninety years ago, having more than 50,000 fans attend a college game wasn't unusual. During that same period, games in the NFL, which officially began in 1920, were fortunate to draw 5,000 fans." Football for Dummies, by Howie Long, John Czarnecki, p 13.
Food for thought. Cbl62 (talk) 01:41, 20 August 2023 (UTC)
- I'm still heavily skeptical that you could find more notable players on, say, the 1921 Cornell Big Red football team (whose captain doesn't even have an article) versus the 1921 Chicago Staleys season. As for general notability of NFL players during that time, I still and always will hold them of historical value and think that we ought to be able to keep those whom we've got enough for a decent biography of per WP:NBASIC, as even if the league may have been smaller, its still the league that became the biggest league of football in history and they're still NFL players. BeanieFan11 (talk) 01:48, 20 August 2023 (UTC)
- Or for a Big Ten example, I still doubt that there's less notable Staleys from '21 than there is for the national champ Iowa, who's best players don't even all have articles (e.g. All-Big Ten pick Fred Lohman). BeanieFan11 (talk) 01:55, 20 August 2023 (UTC)
- Having a Wikipedia article currently doesn't mean they're notable (particularly given past practice of creating articles for one-game players), but you'd find more truly notable players on 1922 Michigan Wolverines (eight truly notable: Jack Blott, Paul G. Goebel, Harry Kipke, Stanley Muirhead, Doug Roby, Edward Slaughter, Herb Steger, Irwin Uteritz, and three less so Jackson Keefer, Ray Knode, and Rudy Rosatti) vs. 1922 Rochester Jeffersons (maybe Doc Alexander and nobody else). Cbl62 (talk) 02:22, 20 August 2023 (UTC)
- And BTW Iowa's best players from 1922 do have articles (Gordon Locke [consensus All-American], Paul Minick (All-American) John W. Hancock, John C. Heldt, Max Kadesky, and Chester Mead). My guess is that's a more notable lineup than the 1922 Evansville Crimson Giants or 1922 Hammond Pros. Cbl62 (talk) 02:29, 20 August 2023 (UTC)
- Comparing the national champ of college to the worst NFL team isn't that fair a comparison - compare the best college team to the best NFL team and see how that goes. BeanieFan11 (talk) 15:13, 20 August 2023 (UTC)

- But it is fair. Even for a top 10 college football team from the 1920s (like Michigan or Notre Dame or Georgia Tech), we aren't going to create biographies for every player but only for the best and most notable players. Yet, in the case of the NFL of the 1920s, we have people creating biography sub-stubs for each and every player, including those who played only a game or two. That's precisely the disconnect. How have I never given you one of these before? Thank you for the insane amount of work you do in creating articles, getting them promoted to GA, featured at DYK, and included at ITN. You're awesome. Hey man im josh (talk) 12:25, 31 August 2023 (UTC) |
- @Hey man im josh: Thank you! By the way, if you didn't already notice, I advanced to the final round of the WikiCup :) – although it'll probably take about a near-impossible 100 good articles for me to have any chance of winning! BeanieFan11 (talk) 14:34, 31 August 2023 (UTC)

- @Hey man im josh: Round three was especially close; I remember watching the clock and clicking back at the ITN page every few minutes because in that last hour or two, the user who finished one spot behind me had a ready-to-go RD nomination that would have put him one point ahead of me for the win! – it ended up being promoted shortly after the deadline, I believe. BeanieFan11 (talk) 20:47, 31 August 2023 (UTC)
- Another interesting note: I'm the only finalist without a featured article, and just me and Muboshgu were the only members of the fourth round with no featured content at any point in the competition (though he's achieved it before, I've still yet to get one piece of featured content!)
