Nitro Type Failing

Is there a reason why your attempt to create a Nitro Type page failed? Should I know about something?

WP:UAA reports on users with no edits

Generally, there is no reason to report usernames with no edits whatsoever. Per WP:UAAI: "Wait until the user edits. Do not report a user that hasn't edited unless they are clearly a vandal. We do not want to welcome productive editors with a report at UAA, nor do we want to waste our time dealing with accounts that may never be used." The exceptions are obvious hate speech or names that attack a living person/Wikipedia editor, those are blockable even without any edits, but other run-of-the-mill violations such as names of organizations or products need not be reported unless and until they at least attempt to edit, and you should be able to clearly explain what the problem is if it is not immediately evident.

For whatever reason, every day dozens, if not hundreds of accounts are created that never make one single edit. It is our responsibility as admins to conscientiously review every report a user makes at UAA, so we have to check for contribs, deleted contribs, and tripping of the edit filter for every one of these reports, only to find out there's nothing there and therefore no problem to be solved. That's time that could be spent doing more productive things, but you basically obligate admins to do it by making such reports. Beeblebrox (talk) 18:12, 15 May 2020 (UTC)

I would add that "a sign of trolling" is not a valid reason to block a username anyway. If they actually were trolling that's another story. Beeblebrox (talk) 18:13, 15 May 2020 (UTC)

Miracle on Ice

Hi ||||, I saw this while perusing the RD1 category. I think you may be in error regarding this page. What is the source page (which really needs to be in the RD1 template for this type of reason)? That content appears to have been added organically rather than in 1 edit or 1 close series of edits. Thanks! CrowCaw 20:24, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

Miracle on Ice

I'm a bit baffled by the massive cull you performed at Miracle on Ice. You've removed nearly 40% of the article, including 53 citations, which seems highly unusual for a copyvio, no? The template you used requesting a revdel says on it, The revisions to be redacted have not been specified. Please check the talk page for more information, and indeed I am curious as to what and why, as the talk page does not include such info. Among other things, scrolling back through the edit history of the article shows that this mass of removed text was added in little pieces here and there over years and years - the last time this article was this small (aside from vandal content removals) was in March 2010. So, unless a legion of editors has been gradually adding copyrighted content on the sly undetected for a decade, and adding citations all the while, I'm wondering if you can explain the reasoning for this mass deletion. Such as indicating the source(s) to back up the assertion that 24,801 bytes of info was a copyvio? Echoedmyron (talk) 20:27, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

Ah, I see someone else above had similar concerns while I was writing my note. Still curious though. Echoedmyron (talk) 20:28, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

@Oshwah: About the first comment I made, your opinions? Signed,The4lines |||| (You Asked?) (What I have Done.) 02:40, 13 May 2020 (UTC)
I don't see how this article violates WP:NOTMANUAL at all - it is definitely not worded, formatted, or organized like a guide, manual, or similar material. I think you can safely remove that from your "to-do list" when to comes to improving this article. What I do understand are the concerns regarding your choice of references. It doesn't appear that you're using cablehaunt.com as a reference to cite content anymore - just as an external link and a website in the article's infobox. However, I don't recommend that you have it listed in these places either.
I agree with CaptainEek - cablehaunt.com appears to serve as promotional, in that the website's intent is to call for the reader to take a certain side or stance, or (in this case) take action on something. I'd recommend removing that website from the list of external links and from the infobox. It's not an official website for anything, and it definitely adds a level of "neutrality doubt" when you view this article from "the big picture". You could have perfectly-neutral content in an article, but if you're linking and pointing to a source that's not reliable and is blatantly biased toward a certain viewpoint, it can still add concerns to readers regarding neutrality and have them questioning the article's "underlying intent" (if you know what I mean).
If I remember correctly, for an article to be approved and listed as a "did you know?" entry on the front page, one requirement is that it has to either be newly-created and be at least a certain size large with content, or be expanded from a stub-level article, small article, etc, be a certain size large with content, and it has to have been added to and expanded upon by a certain ratio or amount compared to how large the article was originally (I thought it had to be expanded by at least 10X 5X the original size - meaning that you added 90% 80% more content to it, but please don't quote me - I'm not completely sure if I'm correct The requirements are listed here; I've fixed the information I gave). What we should do is go back to the research board a bit more... Locate more sources, references, and reliable publications on this subject and use them to expand the article and make it more tightly verifiable. If this exploit is indeed dangerous and wide-spread as the article appears to say it is, there has to be tons of information out there that's reliable and that we can find and use. I'd start there - compile another good list of sources and publications, and use that to expand the article's content and its verifiability.
I found a few small things that I went and fixed for you. However, I have a lot of projects, requests for input and help, and tasks on my plate. The best way that I can help you while making sure that I follow through on my commitments with everyone else who needs my help is to have you continue driving and being the active player in this article's expansion. I'll take a more "hands-off" and "behind-the-scenes" level of involvement with this article by being available to answer any questions, provide you with specific input and thoughts if you get stuck anywhere, and be willing to contribute and comment on any talk page discussions that arise. ;-) Please let me know if I can answer any more questions or help you with anything else, and I'll be more than happy to do so. I hope that my input was helpful to you and pointed you down the correct paths. Like I said, I'm available and happy to help you - please don't be afraid to reach out to me and ask. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 03:28, 13 May 2020 (UTC)

The4lines, yeah, that's what I was worried about. That's a very borderline personal attack - it's a bit shouty and rude, but a 4im for that is way over the top. I wouldn't even have used a template for that - perhaps a manual 'I say old chap, steady on' type of message, but nothing more than that. Please go easy on the 4ims - I don't know whether your warning has in any way influenced their decision to take a break from the wiki, but we don't want to start chasing people away. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 18:52, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
Girth Summit Sorry it was just my own clumsy finger. Thanks for the heads up. Best, Signed,The4lines |||| (You Asked?) (What I have Done.) 18:54, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
The4lines, no worries. If you do find that you've accidentally issued an over-the-top warning, just self-revert, and reinstate an appropriate level warning - or, and in my view this is the better option with established accounts, just tell them what happened, and explain why you thought they were out of line. Hi The4lines. I just wanted to let you know that I've started a good article reassessment of the Deep Blue (chess computer) article that you contributed to—please see Talk:Deep Blue (chess computer)/GA2 for my notes. Editor of the Week : nominations needed!

The Editor of the Week initiative has been recognizing editors since 2013 for their hard work and dedication. Editing Wikipedia can be disheartening and tedious at times; the weekly Editor of the Week award lets its recipients know that their positive behaviour and collaborative spirit is appreciated. The response from the honorees has been enthusiastic and thankful.

The list of nominees is running short, and so new nominations are needed for consideration. Have you come across someone in your editing circle who deserves a pat on the back for improving article prose regularly, making it easier to understand? Or perhaps someone has stepped in to mediate a contentious dispute, and did an excellent job. Do you know someone who hasn't received many accolades and is deserving of greater renown? Is there an editor who does lots of little tasks well, such as cleaning up a citation.

Please help us thank editors who display sustained patterns of excellence, working tirelessly in the background out of the spotlight, by submitting your nomination for Editor of the Week today! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 23:50, 26 May 2020 (UTC)

Phil King (Texas politician) - what tool did you use to determine copyvio? Atsme Talk 📧 15:29, 3 June 2020 (UTC)

@Atsme: Earwig, but we remove it because Presumptive removal over copyright concerns. @Moneytrees: Can explain it in bigger detail. Best, Signed,The4lines |||| (You Asked?) (What I have Done.) 15:34, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
No, I don't need an explanation from anyone but you, and why you thought there was a copyvio. I checked earwig - no copyvio in that BLP; none. You don't remove large blocks of text as copyvio if you cannot explain where the copyvio is in that article. Atsme Talk 📧 15:38, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
(watching) @The4lines: As of revid 942641226, Earwig shows the what-seems-to-be-massive copyvio of 41.2%, but which is actually only one sentence (In the regular and then the three special legislative sessions...that margin was reduced to). The rest should probably be restored; apart from the usual nouns and titles that are vio-exempt, a random Gsearch of other sentences in that version also raises no red flags. ——Serial # 15:41, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
Hey, SN - when I looked at the source (and got a low 39.3% unlikely), it's actually copied from the WP article, not vice versa. (source) When checking copyvios, the checker needs to look into that detail for that very reason. Atsme Talk 📧 15:47, 3 June 2020 (UTC)

4lines - I reverted your edit on the BLP, but you need to remove what you added to your list at Wikipedia:Contributor copyright investigations/20110727. In the future, please be sure to check the sources to make sure they are not mirroring WP as what happened in this case. Happy copyvio hunting! Atsme Talk 📧 16:03, 3 June 2020 (UTC)

Atsme, (I finished writing this before I realized JLAN resopnded, sorry!) as an explanation, the CCI that 4L is doing this as part of is a old annoying timesink revolving around the now banned LTA Billy Hathorn. In CCI's, it is encouraged to presumptively remove material in cases where the subject copied from offline sources, which is unfortunately what happened in this one, with several old newspapers and books. To make matters more annoying, Billy wouldn't always cite sources he copied from, and had several socks. Since earwig only does a limited web search, there's a likelihood that some copyvios may be missed, and given all of the socking, it's best if the material inserted is just wrecking balled.
For the actual content, this is a tricky article since some of the material still in the article from Billy's last edit isn't really copyrightable stuff... I decided to remove a bit of it, and left in parts that can't be rephrased. Moneytrees🌴Talk🌲Help out at CCI! 16:51, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
You're removing material that is not copyvio - they are government stats which is PD, and career accomplishments. There's a high likelihood that blogs and other unreliable sources got their info from the WP article. How closely did you check to make sure? For example, in this diff you removed government stats which are PD. While I appreciate that you're trying to get the mess cleaned up, I am concerned that you're removing material that isn't considered a copyvio. Stats and accomplishments always appear to be copyvio - it's hard to change the name of an accomplishment - such as ...an instructor at his alma mater, Dallas Baptist University, and a Parker County justice of the peace. Please self-revert what you removed after I restored it. Atsme Talk 📧 18:13, 3 June 2020 (UTC)

GOCE June newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors June 2020 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the June newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since March 2020. You can unsubscribe from our mailings at any time; see below. All times and dates stated are in UTC.

Current events

Election time: Nomination of candidates in our mid-year Election of Coordinators opened on 1 June, and voting will take place from 00:01 on 16 June. GOCE coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought about helping out at the Guild, or you know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here.

June Blitz: This blitz begins at 00:01 on 14 June and ends at 23:59 on 20 June, with themes of articles tagged for copyedit in May 2020 and requests.

Drive and blitz reports

March Drive: Self-isolation from coronavirus may have played a hand in making this one of our most successful backlog elimination drives. The copy-editing backlog was reduced from 477 to a record low of 118 articles, a 75% reduction. The last four months of 2019 were cleared, reducing the backlog to three months. Fifty requests were also completed, and the total word count of copy-edited articles was 759,945. Of the 29 editors who signed up, 22 completed at least one copy edit. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

April Blitz: This blitz ran from 12 to 18 April with a theme of Indian military history. Of the 18 people who signed up, 14 copyedited at least one article. Participants claimed a total of 60 copyedits. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

May Drive: This event marked the 10th anniversary of the GOCE's copy-editing drives, and set a goal of diminishing the backlog to just one month of articles, as close to zero articles as possible. We achieved the goal of eliminating all articles that had been tagged prior to the start of the drive, for the first time in our history! Of the 51 editors who signed up, 43 copyedited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Other news

Progress report: as of 2 June, GOCE participants had processed 328 requests since 1 January, which puts us on pace to exceed any previous year's number of requests. As of the end of the May drive, the backlog stood at just 156 articles, all tagged in May 2020.

Outreach: To mark the 10th anniversary of our first Backlog Elimination Drive, The Signpost contributor and GOCE participant Puddleglum2.0 interviewed project coordinators and copy-editors for the journal's April WikiProject Report. The Drive and the current Election of Coordinators have also been covered in The Signpost's May News and Notes page.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Baffle gab1978, Reidgreg, Tdslk and Twofingered Typist.

Thank you for your attention. — Preceding unsigned comment added by EditBer (talkcontribs) 20:26, 10 June 2020 (UTC)

Dear the4lines,

You have just reversed basic information about Bergen Community College's mission, values, and locations. We have played by the rules and cited all of our sources, but it was once again rejected. It doesn't seem fair.

Engineering technologist

Thank you for requesting revision deletion at Engineering technologist. I spent some time yesterday investigating the article and the blog, and came to the conclusion that the blog had copied Wikipedia rather than vice versa. I asked User:Dianaa's advice, and she confirmed that this is so. Nevertheless, thank you for your diligence. Please continue to ask for revision deletions any time you come across copyright violations. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 13:21, 15 June 2020 (UTC)

Conflict Thesis Post

I'm curious why my additions to "Conflict Thesis" keeps getting deleted. Can you clarify? Cheers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Somethingnatural (talkcontribs) 17:31, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

New to Wiki Editing and Not Sure What is Happening with my Edits

I'm new to editing Wiki and not sure why my edits are being deleted. I don't want to engage in controversy. I just wanted to add something new and unique to the discussion that I think is very important. Can you please tell me why things are being deleted? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Somethingnatural (talkcontribs) 14:33, 18 June 2020 (UTC)

The article Solar eclipse of August 21, 2017 you nominated as a good article has failed ; see Talk:Solar eclipse of August 21, 2017 for reasons why the nomination failed. If or when these points have been taken care of, you may apply for a new nomination of the article. The4lines, please do not make any edits to the main Good Article nominations page, as you did yesterday. The listings there are made by the bot, and so long as you make the appropriate adjustments to the article talk page where the nomination is made, they will be reflected on the GAN page within about twenty minutes. Thanks.

You can ignore that "Failed" message for Saturn V; the bot was confused by disappearance of the GA nominee template. I've dropped a note to the reviewer, saying that the review has been cancelled. BlueMoonset (talk) 13:53, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

Copyvio Script

Hi there! I noticed some of the great work you were doing on copyvios but notices you were tagging revisions for revdel manually. You might want to use User:Enterprisey/cv-revdel, it helped me out a ton! — Yours, Berrely • TalkContribs 09:00, 4 July 2020 (UTC)

@Berrely: Yeah I know, I been working with copyvio for a while so I know. But since I don't use firefox I can't use it :p. Oh well, Thanks, Signed,The4lines |||| (You Asked?) (What I have Done.) 14:23, 4 July 2020 (UTC)
The4lines, oh rip. Honestly, though, you've done some really big copyright cleanups, wish you best luck if you become a clerk! — Yours, Berrely • TalkContribs 14:31, 4 July 2020 (UTC)
@Berrely: Thanks! Hopefuly! Signed,The4lines |||| (You Asked?) (What I have Done.) 14:33, 4 July 2020 (UTC)

I'm not sure about revdel here. The quote is attributed and it looks to me like it won't make sense if any of it was omitted. That to me doesn't make it the blatant copyright violation that WP:CRD requires. Another admin may take another view but that's my opinion. Nthep (talk) 19:10, 4 July 2020 (UTC)

@Nthep: Your choice, I feel like we should remove the text still. But it is your choice on the RevDel. Signed,The4lines |||| (You Asked?) (What I have Done.) 22:25, 4 July 2020 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Saturn V

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Saturn V you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Amitchell125 -- Amitchell125 (talk) 12:20, 9 July 2020 (UTC)

GA reviewing

The one piece of advice I would give you on GA reviews is to be clear in your mind what is, and what is not, included in the GA criteria. GA does not require that all guidelines are complied with, only a very limited subset. The essay Wikipedia:What the Good article criteria are not is worth a read in this respect. Of the two points you raised at needle telegraph, the first one (on linking) is definitely not a GA requirement, and the second one (on dates) is marginal at best. That's not to say that I object to you raising those points; I think most editors are happy to deal with easily fixed issues like that. But what you need to consider is what happens if the article author, for whatever reason, declines to take notice of your suggestion. I've frequently come across reviewers who will continue to insist that something is done their way after it has been rejected by the author. If it's not covered by a GA criterion, you've given your opinion, now move on to the rest of the review.

Another thing that sometimes happens is that a review is done to a much higher standard, as if the article is an FA candidate. This can be annoying as it involves the author in far more work than they were anticipating. If you have a lot to say, it might be better to do a second review outside of the GA page. Some reviewers explicitly mark comments they don't consider within the criteria, or else put them in a separate section, but still on the GA review page. SpinningSpark 16:04, 9 July 2020 (UTC)

Saturn V

Hi! Interestingly, another editor has started addressing the comments I have begun to post for the GA review of Saturn V. You may need to check you're happy with how the comments have been addressed. by this editor. According to WP:GAN/I#N4, it is apparently OK for someone to do this (it's never happened to me though). Just to let you know you're the nominator still and changes made to the article by others don't alter that. Regards, Amitchell125 (talk) 21:22, 15 July 2020 (UTC)

Please see the message to the editor here, who is still replying to my comments addressed to you—he's been requested by me to leave the review process alone, unless he wants to comment on the work we are doing. Amitchell125 (talk) 08:43, 16 July 2020 (UTC)
Hopefully everything's back to normal again. I'm crossing out where points have been addressed in the way I wanted, but if one has been done by another editor and and you're not happy about it, let me know so we can discuss it—feel free to make change my mind! @Amitchell125: Thanks, sorry for being late, I was on a break. Best, Signed,The4lines |||| (You Asked?) (What I have Done.) 18:38, 16 July 2020 (UTC)
@The4lines: No problem, just to let you know, I'll be offline for most of the week from Saturday, but I'll do what I can before then, and then get back into the review on my return. Amitchell125 (talk) 19:04, 16 July 2020 (UTC)
