Question from AnDon Timer (17:25, 30 May 2024)

[edit]

I’m a music artist and i want to upload my bio to Google --AnDon Timer (talk) 17:25, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@AnDon Timer: Wikipedia is not a soapbox for your promotion. Wikipedia is also not Google. Please do not attempt to use this site to promote yourself. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 17:34, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

But people add their net worth using Wikipedia, i just want to upload a bio and about myself AnDon Timer (talk) 18:11, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

People do not add their net worth using Wikipedia. Wikipedia has reliably sourced artices on notable individuals that can come up in Google searches. There is no function through Wikipedia to get Google to show your net worth and this is not what Wikipedia is for. If this is all you are hoping for then please look elsewhere. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 18:14, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

But you mean i can write an article about myself or another person using Wikipedia? AnDon Timer (talk) 18:19, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If you are looking to write an article on Wikipedia, see this page which takes you through writing your first article. Please be aware that all Wikipedia articles should be neutral, and you obviously have a conflict of interest if you write about yourself. Wikipedia strongly discourages anyone from attempting to write an autobiography. As I mentioned before, Wikipedia does not exist for you to promote yourself or your brand. Thanks, Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 18:23, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from McCal Media (18:38, 30 May 2024)

[edit]

What are some key insights to know or learn when first editing and working on articles? --McCal Media (talk) 18:38, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@McCal Media: Before we go any further I have to request that you change your username. It currently only contains the name of what I assume is a company which is not allowed per the Wikipedia username policy. Please request a username change here; for people related to businesses the most common format to do this in is "[Your name] at McCal Media" or similar. You must also disclose your conflict of interest on your userpage and if you are being paid for your contributions here.
That said, the main points I think are useful to know are that every addition on Wikipedia needs to be several things:
  • Verifiable; this means that you provide a citation for any information you add that says where you got it from
  • Reliably sourced; any sources you do use for citations must be reliable (e.g. published, independent material)
  • Notable; the topic of every Wikipedia article needs to be notable for that article to not be deleted; this means it passes the general notability guidelines
There's a lot more that could be talked about. Your best placed to go when getting started is here. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 18:48, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Peri Otherly (03:32, 31 May 2024)

[edit]

Hello Wiki Mentor: regarding my recent [TH May 30, 2024] minor edit of the WIKI bio of Oney Judge, i.e., from 'slave' to 'an enslaved woman', should I edit all subsequent references thoughout the article from 'slave' to 'enslaved person/s'? THX Peri --Peri Otherly (talk) 03:32, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Peri Otherly: You certainly could for the sake of consistency. If you're worried about doing it you could ask this question on the article talk page, where I see another user has also mentioned the use of "enslaved". Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 12:28, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Shashankkala (13:17, 1 June 2024)

[edit]

My articles get declined with the reason that i did not cite the relevant or correct sources(even though i added many). even when i have seen many other articles (stubs) which are alive with no citations or sources at all. How? --Shashankkala (talk) 13:17, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Shashankkala: Each Wikipedia article is judged independently for its worth. You are correct that there are poor articles in main space, but this does not mean other equally poor articles should be accepted. In the case of Draft:Shashank Kala I am not seeing sources that really assist with WP:GNG, such as sustained, reliable coverage of the individual. The citations provided are minor. Considering that there are zero results when searching the name in Google News I think it unlikely that you will be able to demonstrate the notability required for the article to be accepted. I also note that from your username you are attempting to write an autobiography, which is strongly discouraged as you have an unavoidable conflict of interest. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 16:22, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Diksha1805 (18:01, 2 June 2024)

[edit]

Hey, how can I write a new article on Wikipedia? --Diksha1805 (talk) 18:01, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Diksha1805: Hi! I see you've asked two questions, I will answer them both here. This page is the best place to start to learn how to write an article. It will take you through the basics you need to understand (such as that articles and article subjects need to be notable, neutral, and supported by reliable sources) and explains how to use articles for creation. AfC is the process new editors go through when they produce an article for Wikipedia. It allows a more experienced editor to review the article first to make sure that it is right for the site, and provide feedback.
If you believe that an article needs page protection of any variety, then you need to request that protection here. Make sure you have a read of the policy for page protection before you make the request, and be prepared to justify why the page needs protecting. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 16:57, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Diksha1805 (18:15, 2 June 2024)

[edit]

Hey, can you please tell me how to add protection to a Wikipedia page? --Diksha1805 (talk) 18:15, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Shashankkala (04:27, 3 June 2024)

[edit]

i accept that Draft:Shashank Kala was not worthy enougth for wikipedia, the problem im having is with draft:seela , it os declined twice . can you evaluate? --Shashankkala (talk) 04:27, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Shashankkala: I echo what the article reviewer has written, that you need more and better sources. Right now your sources show that the village exists, but not why it is notable. You need to provide sources that have significant coverage of the village, while right now you have sources that either briefly mention the village or are directories. Simply, proving that a place exists is not enough to justify a Wikipedia article. You need to demonstrate through your sources and your writing that the topic is notable. Please also make sure that you are citing all the information you use; the first paragraph of your draft includes uncited information not repeated elsewhere. Thanks, Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 17:02, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Alaminislamsiam (14:36, 7 June 2024)

[edit]

i want to write myself in Wikipedia --Alaminislamsiam (talk) 14:36, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Alaminislamsiam: Hello, welcome to Wikipedia! We encourage users not to write autobiographies, or any other article relating to themself. You have a strong conflict of interest and bias that will most likely negate any work you attempt. All article subjects on Wikipedia must be notable; if you are notable then rest assured that somebody else will write the article at some point. Please do not attempt to do so yourself. Thanks, Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 16:51, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Your revert of the Canon S stub

[edit]

Hi,

Just some constructive feedback: I don’t think you acted in the best possible way by just reverting that stub back to a redirect. You could have, for example, put a “citation needed” or “Unreferenced” tag and then given a reasonable amount of time for this to be remedied.

Additionally, your explanation for the revert, that the “redirect does make sense”, seems to indicate insufficient familiarity with the subject matter, since “Canon S” is the exact name Canon itself retroactively gave that model (which was a key milestone in the company’s early history) when they released its successor, the S II. Using the “Canon S” article title to redirect to the historically insignificant PowerShot S series, which is not typically called a “Canon S”, seems wildly off-target to me.

Thanks for listening!

Regards, — tooki (talk) 20:41, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I reverted the change because it had been over an hour and no citation had been added to what was a new one line stub. The redirect did make sense in that "Canon S" is a shortened version of "Canon PowerShot S" which was the target. I am a layman, not a camera expert. I see you've added a citation now, thank you. I look forward to seeing how you expand the article! Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 20:46, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Didn't get much time with the new admin baton, which is a shame, as being the current holder doubles your admin salary (it's a signing bonus, though they don't tell it to you until after you RfA). So I held onto it a bit longer than normal after a successful RfA.

In all seriousness, congrats on your successful RfA :) I'm very glad to see you become an admin and hope you can pass off the baton soon as well. Elli (talk | contribs) 20:53, 15 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Monkeywire (20:38, 20 June 2024)

[edit]

Hello, the page for Ngwo Pine forest doesn't have the "F" capitalized but "F" is part of the title, so it probably should be. I don't know how to change that.

Second: The page for Golden Gate Biosphere Network includes a sentence that is vague, has no citation, and seems to be written by someone close to the group. I suggested on TALK that the sentence be striked rather than doing it myself. Is that correct protocol? --Monkeywire (talk) 20:38, 20 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Monkeywire: Hi, welcome to Wikipedia! Discussing changes to an article on the talk page is always a good place to start. If you don't get any responses and feel like your edit is justifiable, go ahead and be bold! Re Ngwo Pine forest I suggest you do similarly and first discuss on the talk page. If change was necessary it would be completed via a page move. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 13:58, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

CSD deletions

[edit]

Hello, Pickersgill-Cunliffe,

I'm finding a lot of left-over talk pages where you deleted the article or draft page (mostly CSD G11s) but neglected to delete the accompanying talk page. I've found if you use Twinkle to delete pages, and have the right boxes checked off in your Twinkle Preferences, you can delete the main page, the talk page and any redirects with just one click. The only thing it won't take care of is any talk pages for redirects so you're on your own searching for those. But it's very helpful for all CSD deletions and will even delete PROD-tagged articles and files effectively. I encourage you to give it a try so you don't have any of these "left-over" pages when you delete an article or draft. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 22:12, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Artlin2 (21:46, 25 July 2024)

[edit]

Hello Pickersgill-Cunliffe,

A page created and published on wikipedia with Chitra Ramanathan as subject in 2022, It was not self-created by the subject. It was written citing notability by wiki writers at that time, which got accepted and published in June 2022. It is currently on a draft, and upon direction from Geoffrey Lane, recommended a revision.

Who can help edit this article and publish it as it was already a Live article? --Artlin2 (talk) 21:46, 25 July 2024 (UTC). Response appreciated with thanks in advance.[reply]

Hello Pickersgill-Cunliffe,
As follow-up, which independent source is to republish the page Chitra Ramanathan since it was already published in 2022 by Wikipedia back then? Thanks in advance for a response. Artlin2 (talk) 19:16, 27 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Please see the comments reviewers have left at Draft:Chitra Ramanathan. The main point raised is a lack of reliable sources. The articles for creation process is what you need to go through once issues with the draft are fixed. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 14:03, 28 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Slade's modified Mermaid Class

[edit]

I am currently picking at HMS Triton (1773), one of 3 ships that were modified versions of Thomas Slade's Mermaid Class. I can't find anything that explains what those modifications were and wondered if you had anything, in Gardiner's The First Frigates, for example. Some of the dimensions differ by an inch or two but this is not noted by Winfield as being a design modification and indeed, this minimal difference in size could be down to natural expansion; ships within the same design class often differed slightly in their dimensions so I don't think that's relevant. I could be wrong though of course. Best --Ykraps (talk) 09:05, 28 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, so page 325 of Winfield says, "...the design was revived with a slightly longer keel" which was about a foot longer than the Mermaid Class (missed that). Still interested to know if Gardiner has anything to say though. --Ykraps (talk) 09:20, 28 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Ykraps: Particular mentions of Triton and the second batch in First Frigates:
  • P.82: Triton 9 May 1793 Quarterdeck 4 x 6pdr long guns and 4 x 24pdr carronades, Forecastle 2 x 24pdr carronades
  • P.111: Greyhound, Triton and Boreas of 1770, disposition of frame. One of Sir Thomas Slade's last innovations was the introduction of a separate framing plan, of which this is one of the earliest examples. Not all of the square frames are represented (the remainder duplicating the arrangement of those drawn), but it shows all the fore and aft cants, the hawse pieces and the transoms. There are two single filling frames between each doubled bend, with a single filling frame of enlarged siding in midships; the adjacent halves of the bends fore and aft of the midships filling frame are similarly sided (1ft 4in at the floor and first futtock to 1ft 1in in the toptimber according to annotations on the draught). Note also the sharp curves required of the hawse pieces.
  • P.74: Quarter galleries usually contained three equal sized windows, or 'lights'...but some of Slade's later ships (Lowestoffe and the later Mermaids) had a far larger, round-headed centre light, which also occurred on the Lyme.
  • PP.77-8: Although retaining the Mermaid's lines, Hussar and Solebay showed considerable alterations in the topside, principally an increase in the sheer ('made quicker') during the design stage (Feb 1762), which gave more freeboard fore and aft. In general, the second group were similar but there were further very small alterations to the profile of the bow and stern and the bowsprit was raised.
  • P.78: As with the follow-on Mermaids, the Orpheus and Diamond exhibit increased sheer and other topside alterations.
  • P. 98: Generally, not very fast (12kts is the highest quoted, before the wind); mediocre sailing free, but very good performance to windward, managing 10-11kts close-hauled in a topgallant gale. Speed held up relatively well in heavy weather, and they rolled deep but easy. Good, but not exceptional, manoeuvrability.
Let me know if you have any more queries and I can take a look. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 14:00, 28 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, that's really helpful. I'll try and weave all that in. --Ykraps (talk) 06:11, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding article deletion retrieval

[edit]

Dear Pickersgill,

I've been recommended to speak to you regarding an issue. Have attached the snapshot of my conversation with Bobby Cohn. Hoping you can help me here. Getting a bit anxious here as all of this is my first time.

Looking forward to your response.

Best,

Baldeep Baldeep1102 (talk) 19:18, 28 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, the draft was written in a promotional manner and deleted under G11 which is not commonly reversed. You have disclosed a conflict of interest with the topic but that does not then give you free reign to write what I would describe as a puff piece. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 09:52, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Pickersgill-Cunliffe it was my first and I understand this completely now on the tone (though the effort my side was not to promote) but i agree that the tone may not be the one going out on an encyclopedia.
Pls help retrieve this one last time (as I navigate wikipedia terrain) as otherwise all my multiple weeks effort would be zero and I need to start from scratch.
Looking forward.
Best,
Baldeep 2001:8F8:1921:ED8:B8CA:E622:1098:7447 (talk) 10:00, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
While it sounds harsh I think it would be best if you do start again, that way you avoid repeating the same mistakes. Focus on writing a short article that concentrates on providing the hard facts that make the topic notable. Anything else can be added later, but that needs to be your bread and butter. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 10:04, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Lol. Ok buddy i take this constructively. Will be back with a new article and hope it will sail smooth this time. How do i ensure that you only get to review again when i submit next? 2001:8F8:1921:ED8:B8CA:E622:1098:7447 (talk) 10:18, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Dear @Pickersgill-Cunliffe,
Over the past few days, I've worked diligently to revise the article from scratch, incorporating the feedback you provided last time. I've now republished the article as
Draft:Swamini Brahmaprajnananda Saraswati - Wikipedia
Would you kindly review it and offer any feedback before considering deletion or any such drastic steps? I'm hopeful that the improvements will meet the necessary standards this time.
Thank you for your time and consideration. Om. 🙏 Baldeep1102 (talk) 17:06, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Here is a cup of lemonade for you. I shouldn't have created the redirect for Interstate 249 under WP: Crystalball and it's WP:Too Soon, as no plans are in the works to upgrade Missouri Route 249 to Interstate Standard. Cwater1 (talk) 19:10, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I am constantly having to revert the notice back on User talk:24.50.25.163 it was issued by you, and I find it unacceptable. It seems like the reverts are in bad faith. Felicia (talk) 15:41, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

IPv6's edit 'not vandalism'

[edit]

I noticed that you tagged this AIV report as not vandalism. I figured I'd bring it up since I just re-reported the IP range for repeating the same vandalism - the information added is obviously false, as it has been every time this IP range as made similar edits over the last few months. For example, they are claiming that a video release from 1987 contains clips from a TV show that wasn't filmed until 10 years later. MrOllie (talk) 00:52, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted Page on SRVC

[edit]

Hi @Pickersgill-Cunliffe You recently deleted the page I wrote on a fashion brand called SRVC Studio - The reasons was that it was too promotional and you are absolutely right - The reason for me wanting to add it is because its a very interesting brand in the space of London and has quite an interesting story and unique point of view on fashion. My question is more I want to resubmit as I want to rewrite the article in a more interesting way that benefits Wikipedia. Do I have to create a new article? As I can no longer access the previous version that got declined :( Thanks a lot for your help! Brice Brice87! (talk) 08:58, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Brice87: Hi! If you want to rewrite the article in a non-promotional manner you are best to start afresh with a new version. Please ensure that you are demonstrating the notability of the topic as you do so. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 09:01, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations, Pickersgill-Cunliffe! The article you nominated, Henry Macandrew, has been promoted to featured status, recognizing it as one of the best articles on Wikipedia. The nomination discussion has been archived.
This is a rare accomplishment and you should be proud. If you would like, you may nominate it to appear on the Main page as Today's featured article. Keep up the great work! Cheers, Gog the Mild (talk) via FACBot (talk) 00:06, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Aveka Singh

[edit]

@Pickersgill-Cunliffe:, Could you please draftify my page Aveka Singh you deleted so I could improve the page?

Im not sure how its identical to the deleted page seeing that the deleted page used at most one of the collection of sources for my page (all the sources except one werre published after the old page was created in 2020).

In addition, the reason I created her page now was that she has gained way more profile since the deleted page, having played for the senior Indian nationalm team. Thanks, Das osmnezz (talk) 20:29, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Pickersgill-Cunliffe:, Please see above. Thanks, Das osmnezz (talk) 19:38, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Das osmnezz: The article is now here. I deleted it because it was not clearly different to the previously deleted version. Please ensure that you work on the article more thoroughly in draft space, including more sources and indicating notability far more obviously than six lacking-in-context one-line sections. Thanks, Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 19:57, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think this could use some admin guidance

[edit]

Hi P-C, and apologies to be bothering you again. As a not quite random admin who understands mil hist can I seek your advice on a situation I keep having with the well intentioned but perhaps enthusiastic editor LuciusHistoricus. They have been editing articles which I have taken through FAC and if I revert (which I often but not always have) citing BRD they re-revert with long explanations in the edit summary. A couple of points have come to discussion on talk pages, but I am not convinced that they have a complete grip on how sourcing works on Wikipedia, especially on FACs. A fresh pair of eyes and any advice you may feel appropriate for both of us would be appreciated. And apologies again for asking you to be piggy in the middle in a series of content disputes.

Thanks Gog the Mild (talk) 21:26, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Gog the Mild: Apologies for the delay in responding, you managed to message me almost immediately before work exploded! Per FAOWN, "it is considerate to discuss significant changes of text or images on the talk page first". It looks like you and Lucius are engaging on the various talk pages which is the right way to go. All editing appears to me to be in genuine good faith and I am not wont to interfere in that. The main point I would want LuciusHistoricus to take going forward is that just because other Wikipedia articles use a certain style, or phrase things a certain way, it does not mean that others should too. This is especially true for Featured Articles that have gone through a long approval process to get them to the state they are in. I would also note the militia discussion and some trouble over determining consensus amongst reliable sources, but this appears to be dealt with. It's never simple editing FAs and considerate discussion is needed from all parties. If you come to a true sticking point in the future you should consider a request for comment. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 18:50, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No worries PC and thanks for the response. Coincidentally the temperature seemed to lower just as I wrote the above. Hopefully, with BRD etc going forward it will stay low. Gog the Mild (talk) 18:57, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Swarleystinson88 (05:33, 10 August 2024)

[edit]

Hello, I have been trying to segregate table data based on chronology in 2024 Wayanad landslides. But a user keeps reverting the edit. In talk page, he is giving me a subjective reason as to why the table doesn’t need a chronology and also accusing me. May I know if I am at wrong here? I was just trying to arrange data for better comprehension. --Swarleystinson88 (talk) 05:33, 10 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Swarleystinson88: I see there has been an extensive discussion about this already, and think you would be wise to open a request for comment if you believe changes should be made that other editors have so far disagreed with. It is not a discussion of whether you are "at wrong", but a process to find consensus for either change or status quo. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 18:55, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it has been clarified. Thank you. Swarleystinson88 (talk) 03:51, 13 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have absolutely no financial or legal benefits from this. I only have the copyright, because I created and wrote this article myself, providing the sources. I am aware that I am transferring the copyright to Wikimedia Commons. Since about 2005/2006 I have been editing Miguel and the Living Dead for free on the Polish wiki. I have been interested in the music of this aesthetic for about 30 years (I have a lot of books, CDs, vinyls, cassettes, all original editions from all over the world). Finally I updated it and decided that it is worth making an English version for MATLD. I have been following the band for years and going to their concerts. I know their biographies very well. I know the musicians (by the way, I know many Polish bands, including some musicians personally, but I decided that there should be an English version for MATLD, because the line-up has become international and the band has played and continues to play with international bands not only in Poland). I sent them the translation and they asked if they could put it on the new page, so I said ok. How could I know that this would be a conflict. I am not their manager. Their page was created by someone else, I don't know this person at all. I just found out by accident that MATLD is being revived and decided to write an article. I regret all this hard work since October 2023 and unfortunately I didn't write this draft in the rough draft. Please help me with this somehow. MKutera74 (talk) 11:08, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I am interested in creating a new Wikipedia Page for my boss. Any ideas on how or the best place to start? --Razaq O Balogun (talk) 15:05, 29 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

My best advice is that you do not do this. You have an unavoidable conflict of interest and would have issues with bias and paid editing. If your boss is notable rest assured that somebody else will write the article on them. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 18:28, 29 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Nominations for the upcoming project coordinator election have opened. A team of up to ten coordinators will be elected for the next coordination year. The project coordinators are the designated points of contact for issues concerning the project, and are responsible for maintaining our internal structure and processes. They do not, however, have any authority over article content or editor conduct, or any other special powers. More information on being a coordinator is available here. If you are interested in running, please sign up here by 23:59 UTC on 14 September! Voting will commence on 15 September. Hi! I joined as an editor primarily to translate a page from Brazilian Portuguese to English (i’ve also wanted to do it for a while, but this translation is my first goal).
