Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Coordinators/September 2024

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Overview

[edit]

This election is to appoint the project coordinator team for one year, from 30 September 2024 to 29 September 2025. Coordinators are generally responsible for maintaining all of the procedural and administrative aspects of the project. All of the coordinators, and especially the lead coordinator (or lead coordinators), serve as the designated points-of-contact for procedural issues and focus on specific areas requiring special attention. They are not, however, endowed with any special executive powers.

Responsibilities

[edit]

From Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Coordinators:

The primary responsibility of the project coordinators is the maintenance and housekeeping work involved in keeping the project and its internal processes running smoothly; this includes a variety of tasks, such as keeping the announcement and open task lists updated, overseeing the assessment and review processes, managing the proposal and creation of task forces, and so forth. There is fairly little involved that couldn't theoretically be done by any other editor, of course—in only a few places have the coordinators been explicitly written into a process—but, since experience suggests that people tend to assume that someone else is doing whatever needs to be done, it has proven beneficial to formally delegate responsibility for this administrative work to a specified group.

The coordinators also have several additional roles. They serve as the project's designated points of contact, and are explicitly listed as people to whom questions can be directed in a variety of places around the project. In addition, they have (highly informal) roles in leading the drafting of project guidelines, overseeing the implementation of project decisions on issues like category schemes and template use, and helping to resolve disputes and keep discussions from becoming heated and unproductive.

Practical information on coordinating may be found here and here.

The current coordinators are:

The candidate with the highest number of endorsements will become the lead coordinator (provided he or she is willing to assume the post); this position may be shared in the event that multiple candidates receive the highest number of endorsements. The remaining candidates with twenty or more endorsements will be appointed as coordinators to a maximum of eleven appointments (including the lead coordinator). The number of coordinators may be increased or reduced if there is a tie or near-tie for the last position.

Gog the Mild

[edit]

Gog the Mild (talk · contribs)

I have been active on Wikipedia for some time, during which MilHist has become my Wiki-home and I have much appreciated the creative space made available for me. Working as a coordinator over the past five years has seemed a useful way of partially paying back for the use of the "playground" and perhaps helping to maintain it as the collegiate place that it is. Note that I take a Shermanesque attitude to the possibility of being elected lead coordinator.

Comments and questions for Gog the Mild

[edit]
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • Some enthusiasm and some time. As a natural Wikignome I actually enjoy some of the more repetitive or routine activities, so I may be able to free some of the more experienced coordinators' time up for some of the more high-skill activities. I also review MilHist nominations for promotion to Featured Article or, less frequently, A Class status.

I have been your Lead Coordinator for the past year. I am currently standing for re-election. Last month I was at Wikimania 2024 in Katowice, Poland, and am still in Europe at the Paralympic Games in Paris, France. (Including a visit to Omaha Beach.) But I will be back in a couple of weeks time.

  • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
    • I have written over one hundred Featured Articles. The main project I worked on for some years was improving the articles on the Manhattan Project to Good article status or better. The history of the Manhattan Project was turned into a Featured Topic. As a result of the recent Oppenheimer film, the article on J. Robert Oppenheimer, has run up over twenty million page views this year. In more recent times I have enjoyed writing articles on military logistics and nuclear-powered rockets.
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • I have a PhD in military history. I have access to academic libraries and online journal resources, and have experience with military history research related to World War I and II. I write and maintain Bots, in Perl and C#. The role of the coordinator used to be quite complex so I wrote the MilHistBot, initially to handle the work involved in promoting articles to A-class. This made the task of promoting A-class articles much easier. Since then I have set the MilHistBot to work cleaning up our project backlogs. Several of the project backlogs are now no more. (One was cleared last month with the help of a template change excluding draft space articles from tagging. We are approaching our goals with regard to the overall quality of articles. In recent times, in my role as lead coordinator, I have been involved with the move of our WikiProject banner to use the {{WPBannerMeta}} meta-template.

After a year off, I'm back again. I was elected in the coordinator elections in 2020, 2021, and 2022, but didn't run in 2023 due to real life things. I will state upfront though that I am likely to be much less active in the summers for the forseeable future, due to the timing of the busy season at my work. Hi all, I hope you're doing well! For those who don't know me, I am Iazyges. I primarily write on Roman topics, but also review a great deal of other topics, mostly related to history. While unfortunately not as active as I once was due to real-life business (high school and even college me did not have an understanding of how blessed they were with free time), I am hopeful that I will be able to do more in the near future as life settles down a bit. • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • I have had a fair amount of tenure and experience in the role, serving for 6 years non-consecutively, as well as a wealth of experience (although I daren't call myself excellent) in reviewing articles. I hope to continue to provide what I can to the project.

Pickersgill-Cunliffe

[edit]

Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk · contribs)

Throwing my hat into the ring for a third year! Since the last election I have been granted a mop...this doesn't mean I am less active but I do have a wider set of responsibilities. I look forward to continuing my involvement with the WikiProject.

Comments and questions for Pickersgill-Cunliffe

[edit]
  • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
    • My main area of interest is the Napoleonic Wars. I initially focused on naval warfare but have since broadened my horizons. I have most recently delved into the First World War and took Henry Macandrew to FAC. Amongst my (far too optimistic) list of projects, I am working on a Roebuck-class ship good topic.
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • With two years under my belt I would tentatively call myself an experienced coordinator. I work mostly in the reviewing realm, focusing on GAN but also helping out at ACR and FAC. I am also involved in rejuvenating the member affairs process, currently focusing on welcoming new members and occasionally having a say in The Bugle.
