Cities in Sri Lanka
What is the legal definition of a city in Sri Lanka. Look at the List of cities in Sri Lanka I can't help but wonder how a place that has a population of just over 1,500 residents can ever be considered to be a city. I know that a lot of eager novice editors are keen to over-state the importance of their home town however there must be a government definition as to what constitutes a village, town or city. I think that this would greatly assist. Most references I've been able to source indicate that there are only about 24 'cities' in the country. Was wondering if you could help me on this one. Dan arndt (talk) 12:32, 12 November 2016 (UTC)
- @Dan arndt: I haven't come across any formal definition of what constitutes a city. The Department of Census & Statistics considers an area governed by municipal or urban council to be an "urban" area, as opposed to rural. I'd suggest we'd use the same. I think the 24 cities refers to the 24 municipal councils but I don't think we should limit the article to those covered by MC as by quirk of history (and political manipulation) there are some large settlements that don't have MC. Might be worthwhile posing the question at WP:LK.--obi2canibetalk contr 12:49, 12 November 2016 (UTC)

User group: New Page Reviewr
Hello Obi2canibe.
Based on the patrols you made of new pages during a qualifying period in 2016, your account has been added to the "New page reviewers
" user group, allowing you to review new pages and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or in some cases, tag them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed.
New page reviewing is a vital function for policing the quality of the encylopedia, if you have not already done so, you must read the new tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the various deletion criteria. If you need more help or wish to discuss the process, please join or start a thread at page reviewer talk.
- Be nice to new users - they are often not aware of doing anything wrong.
- You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted - be formal and polite in your approach to them too, even if they are not.
- Don't review a page if you are not sure what to do. Just leave it for another reviewer.
- Remember that quality is quintessential to good patrolling. Take your time to patrol each article, there is no rush. Use the message feature and offer basic advice.
The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In case of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, the right can be revoked at any time by an administrator. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 01:34, 19 November 2016 (UTC)

It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

- Breaking the back of the backlog
If each reviewer does only 10 reviews a day over five days, the backlog will be down to zero and the daily input can then be processed by each reviewer doing only 2 or 3 reviews a day - that's about 5 minutes work!
Let's get that over and done with in time to relax for the holidays.

That scout article
I think your critique of the article is valid, as you will have seen from my !vote.
One thing I have found over many years is that an AfD runs better and generally has a better outcome the quieter the nominator can be. By 'better outcome' I mean better for Wikipedia, not what the nominator wishes or does not wish to happen. Please may I commend to you the idea of allowing the scouts to continue to state the the bronze wolf award is awesomeness personified, and to stand back and leave it to the closing admin's judgement over the argument presents. It is not the volume, but the quality of the arguments that ought to win the day.
The actual outcome probably matters little. If it is deleted, that is fine, moved to draft is fine, too, and retention is fine, though it does lack decent referencing Fiddle Faddle 11:56, 20 December 2016 (UTC)

List of Royal College Colombo alumni
Its a massive task so you can reward me when I finally finish. By converting the list to a wikitable I'm hoping to:
- standardise the various subheadings
- weed out some of the non-notable individuals
- remove the unnecessary honorifics
- remove the duplications (listing them under their most notable achievement rather than every achievement)
- create a sortable list, which can be ordered alphabetically
I still need to look at the lead as well.
What that means is that it can be used as an exemplar for other lists such as List of Ananda College alumni, List of Mahinda College alumni, List of Nalanda College Colombo alumni, List of Trinity College, Kandy alumni and probably the worst of the bunch List of St Peter's College, Colombo alumni. Have already worked through most of the small lists of alumni but its a hard slog.
Luckily enough I haven't run into much resistance at this stage but the year is still young. Dan arndt (talk) 01:14, 21 December 2016 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of File:Shelton Ranaraja.jpg
A tag has been placed on File:Shelton Ranaraja.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F9 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the file appears to be a blatant copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted content borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. - @Dan arndt: Now that you've got this image deleted using a spurious WP:F9 please go and find a free image of Ranaraja.--obi2canibetalk contr 20:26, 17 January 2017 (UTC)
Calm down Obi2canibe, it wasn't a spurious WP:F9. The image was published in 2011 and is copyright of the newspaper. I did raise concerns earlier and you suggested that I if I believed that there had been any violation of copyright policy I should seek the advice of WP:CP - which I did. As an experienced editor I thought you might want to deal with it yourself rather than using a Speedy Delete. Please don't take this as a personal affront - like you all I'm trying to do is improve WP, particularly Sri Lankan articles. I hope we can collaborate on future articles. Dan arndt (talk) 05:18, 18 January 2017 (UTC) has extended an olive branch of peace.
- @Dan arndt: I don't see any discussion at WP:CP, nor was I informed of any discussion. I never expected you to speedily delete anything. You're wrong to to assume that the image is the copyright of a newspaper (presumably the Sunday Times). It's earliest appearance is on dbsjeyaraj.com, dated 12/08/2011 whereas the Sunday Times article is dated 21/08/2011, nine days later. Even if it were copyrighted to the Sunday Times WP:NFCI#10 allow its use on Wikipedia as long as it complies with WP:NFCCP. Neither the Sunday Times or the Daily Mirror are press/photo agencies - they are news outlets which source content, including images, from press/photo agencies. You are making too many errors because you are making assumptions. Don't jump in with size 12 boots. Always check what you are doing and above all comply with policies.
- Anyway, I have stared a WP:DRV here if you wish to comment.--obi2canibetalk contr 19:56, 18 January 2017 (UTC)

New Page Review - newsletter No.2
- A HUGE backlog
We now have 811 New Page Reviewers!
Most of us requested the user right at PERM, expressing a wish to be able to do something about the huge backlog, but the chart on the right does not demonstrate any changes to the pre-user-right levels of October.
The backlog is still steadily growing at a rate of 150 a day or 4,650 a month. Only 20 reviews a day by each reviewer over the next few days would bring the backlog down to a managable level and the daily input can then be processed by each reviewer doing only 2 or 3 reviews a day - that's about 5 minutes work!
It didn't work in time to relax for the Xmas/New Year holidays. Let's see if we can achieve our goal before Easter, otherwise by Thanksgiving it will be closer to 70,000.
- Second set of eyes
Remember that we are the only guardians of quality of new articles, we alone have to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged by non-Reviewer patrollers and that new authors are not being bitten.
- Abuse
This is even more important and extra vigilance is required considering Orangemoody, and
- this very recent case of paid advertising by a Reviewer resulting in a community ban.
- this case in January of paid advertising by a Reviewer, also resulting in a community ban.
- This Reviewer is indefinitely blocked for sockpuppetry.
Coordinator election

Please don't follow me to other articles. Two minutes after reverting me on the ragging articles, you followed me to the tamil tigers article and reverted me there.
No more stalking please. Spacecowboy420 (talk) 11:11, 3 April 2017 (UTC)Speedy deletion nomination of COLOMBO OVERSEAS SCHOOL,COLOMBO 8

Harassment by unexplained content removal
Hello, I have noticed that you have removed the categories I have added to the articles Ambalangoda, Polonnaruwa and Ampara without giving a proper reason. Also you have made significant changes to the categories I have created recently (Category:Tangalle, Category:Polonnaruwa,Category:Landmarks in Kurunegala, Category:Monaragala etc.) only giving a '+' sign in the edit summary, clearly as an harassment to me. If you continue to wikihound me and change my edits to demoralize me, you will be reported without any further notification. --LahiruG talk 09:51, 22 April 2017 (UTC)
