Recent Updates

Hi, don't you think you should wait before making solid edits. Nothing has yet been resolved.--Blackknight12 (talk) 01:12, 1 November 2018 (UTC)

Blackknight12, I understand your concerns. My edits weren't meant to legitimise what has happened in Sri Lanka, they were just a reflection of reality on the ground in Sri Lanka. The machinery of government (civil service, police, military, state media) are all taking orders from MR and his government.
History is littered with people who have taken power illegally, through coups, assassinations, palace intrigues etc, and proclaimed themselves to be king, president, prime minister etc. We in Wikipedia don't ignore them just because they have gained their position through unsavoury methods.
The likelihood is that MR will contrive enough defections to achieve a majority in Parliament. Even if RW somehow manages to cling onto power we need to acknowledge that MR was de facto, if not de jure, in charge, even for a few days. Just as we acknowledge that Mohan Peiris was de facto CJ.--Obi2canibe (talk) 20:42, 1 November 2018 (UTC)
On another note, thanks for your edits regarding the cabinet. I think however it would be best to separate the table in Sirisena cabinet into two, 2015-2018 and 2018-present, given that this is a new government or new cabinet, or a cabinet reshuffle.--Blackknight12 (talk) 13:48, 9 November 2018 (UTC)
@Blackknight12: I agree that the article needs splitting but, as things are changing fast, let's wait for the dust to settle before we decided at which juncture we should split the article.--Obi2canibe (talk) 14:14, 11 November 2018 (UTC)
@Blackknight12: Now that the crisis is over I suggest that we split Sirisena cabinet into three: First Sirisena cabinet for the national unity government from January 2015 to October 2018, Second Sirisena cabinet for the UPFA government from October 2018 to December 2018 and Third Sirisena cabinet for the incumbent UNF government. What do you think?--Obi2canibe (talk) 21:32, 16 December 2018 (UTC)
Rather than splitting the article I suggest dividing it, because its still his first an only term. Having said that we should divide Rajapaksa cabinet into First Rajapaksa cabinet and Second Rajapaksa cabinet. For the Sirisena cabinet from 2015-18 we should name it the First Sirisena–Wickremesinghe cabinet, as it is sort of a duel executive situation in Sri Lankan politics when one party has the executive branch and the other has the majority in the legislative. The new cabinet to be sworn in soon should be named the Second Sirisena–Wickremesinghe cabinet. I think it would be better off if we rename the whole article the Sirisena–Wickremesinghe cabinet, while another thing to consider is that Sirisena is in the executive because of the UNP. As for the "government" from October 2018 to December 2018 I dont consider it a legal appointment as do many others, and obviously the government here is not a reliable source, and theres still a Supreme Court ruling to come on the legality of it. I suggest we write a paragraph about the constitutional crisis in between the two cabinets and link it to that article. Details about the October-December cabinet with a simplified version of this list can be expanded in the 2018 Sri Lankan constitutional crisis article, as that "cabinet" is directly and solely related to the crisis. The same should be done fo the Wijetunga cabinet, it should be spilt into the Wijetunga cabinet and Wijetunga–Kumaratunga cabinet and the Kumaratunga cabinet, into the First Kumaratunga cabinet, Kumaratunga–Wickremesinghe cabinet and Second Kumaratunga cabinet.--Blackknight12 (talk) 09:16, 17 December 2018 (UTC)
@Blackknight12: Dividing the article doesn't solve the problem that the article is too large (almost 200k). With another year to go before the next presidential election, the article will only grow in size.
The rule we've followed in naming cabinet articles is to name them only after the head of government and the president is the head of the government. As the recent events have shown, even after the 19th amendment the president still retains a lot of executive power. We can still split the articles as you've suggested but only name the president in the title - so First Wijetunga cabinet (1993-94) and Second Wijetunga cabinet (1994); and First Kumaratunga cabinet (1994-2001), Second Kumaratunga cabinet (2001-04) and Third Kumaratunga cabinet (2004-05).
As I've stated previously, it is not up to us to pass judgement about what's legitimate or not. We can't ignore the fact that MR and his ministers held the levers of power for seven weeks. Adding a list of ministers to 2018 Sri Lankan constitutional crisis isn't a good idea, that article is already getting too large.--Obi2canibe (talk) 17:49, 17 December 2018 (UTC)
I think it's maybe time we update the rule a bit. Even though the President is head of state and government, when the office of Prime Minister is held by a member of a different party the Prime Minister holds a lot of power in the legislature. As we can see the new cabinet appointed by Sirisena and Wickremesinghe are mostly UNP members and are all from the UNF. We cant say its solely a Sirisena cabinet because Wickremesinghe and the UNP had a lot of say in who gets what. Had the Prime Minister and the legislature been from the SLFP like Sirisena, then Sirisena, in his capacity as head of state and government but also Leader of the SLFP would have had all the power to appoint and confirm who he wanted. So I think its important we take this into consideration. I have also updated 2018 Sri Lankan constitutional crisis with a small list of the crisis cabinet, I think that should suffice as the article already talks about the short lived cabinet and its governmental acts, and is more appropriate there than having its one article.--Blackknight12 (talk) 10:58, 20 December 2018 (UTC)

NPR Newsletter No.15 16 November 2018

Chart of the New Pages Patrol backlog for the past 6 months.

Hello Obi2canibe,

Community Wishlist Survey – NPP needs you – Vote NOW
  • Community Wishlist Voting takes place 16 to 30 November for the Page Curation and New Pages Feed improvements, and other software requests. The NPP community is hoping for a good turnout in support of the requests to Santa for the tools we need. This is very important as we have been asking the Foundation for these upgrades for 4 years.
If this proposal does not make it into the top ten, it is likely that the tools will be given no support at all for the foreseeable future. So please put in a vote today.
We are counting on significant support not only from our own ranks, but from everyone who is concerned with maintaining a Wikipedia that is free of vandalism, promotion, flagrant financial exploitation and other pollution.
With all 650 reviewers voting for these urgently needed improvements, our requests would be unlikely to fail. See also The Signpost Special report: 'NPP: This could be heaven or this could be hell for new users – and for the reviewers', and if you are not sure what the wish list is all about, take a sneak peek at an article in this month's upcoming issue of The Signpost which unfortunately due to staff holidays and an impending US holiday will probably not be published until after voting has closed.

56 Division

—— It would probably be a good idea to let the IP editor know that it failed verification on 56 Division (Sri Lanka) and discuss the changes with them, if you haven't already. It looks like they have edited in this topic area quite a bit, and there could be additional mistakes in other articles. NPR Newsletter No.16 15 December 2018

Hello Obi2canibe,

Reviewer of the Year

This year's award for the Reviewer of the Year goes to Onel5969. Around on Wikipedia since 2011, their staggering number of 26,554 reviews over the past twelve months makes them, together with an additional total of 275,285 edits, one of Wikipedia's most prolific users.

Thanks are also extended for their work to JTtheOG (15,059 reviews), Boleyn (12,760 reviews), Cwmhiraeth (9,001 reviews), Semmendinger (8,440 reviews), PRehse (8,092 reviews), Arthistorian1977 (5,306 reviews), Abishe (4,153 reviews), Barkeep49 (4,016 reviews), and Elmidae (3,615 reviews).
Cwmhiraeth, Semmendinger, Barkeep49, and Elmidae have been New Page Reviewers for less than a year — Barkeep49 for only seven months, while Boleyn, with an edit count of 250,000 since she joined Wikipedia in 2008, has been a bastion of New Page Patrol for many years.

See also the list of top 100 reviewers.

Less good news, and an appeal for some help

The backlog is now approaching 5,000, and still rising. There are around 640 holders of the NPR flag, most of whom appear to be inactive. The 10% of the reviewers who do 90% of the work could do with some support especially as some of them are now taking a well deserved break.

Really good news - NPR wins the Community Wishlist Survey 2019

At #1 position, the Community Wishlist poll closed on 3 December with a resounding success for NPP, reminding the WMF and the volunteer communities just how critical NPP is to maintaining a clean encyclopedia and the need for improved tools to do it. A big 'thank you' to everyone who supported the NPP proposals. See the results.

Training video

Due to a number of changes having been made to the feed since this three-minute video was created, we have been asked by the WMF for feedback on the video with a view to getting it brought up to date to reflect the new features of the system. Please leave your comments here, particularly mentioning how helpful you find it for new reviewers.

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna ‎

Hi Rajapaksa became MP and he have joined the party. --Panam2014 (talk) 22:29, 19 December 2018 (UTC)

@Panam2014: That's not correct - during the constitutional crisis several MPs claimed to have joined the SLPP, not just MR. And you need to provide sources for your contributions, not guess.--Obi2canibe (talk) 22:45, 19 December 2018 (UTC)
@Obi2canibe: sources have been provided for Rajapaksa. So, at leat 1 MP have joined the party, and Rajapaksa have never said that he have switched down. For others MP if you want to add them, please read the news. Or in this case, we should remove in the article Leader of opposition that Rajapaksa is member of SLPP. Sources are not needed in the infobox if the info is sourced in others pages, like MR. --Panam2014 (talk) 23:03, 19 December 2018 (UTC)
@Panam2014: We can't have incomplete data. You need to do some research to find out the total number of SLPP MPs. Just because you've found sources to show that MR is a member of SLPP doesn't mean you should mislead readers by saying that SLPP has only one MP. Better to have no data than misleading data.--Obi2canibe (talk) 19:03, 20 December 2018 (UTC)
@Obi2canibe: we should replace the number one by "?". To mean that the party have at least one deputy. For his previous party,we should replace the current number by "?" because the current number is outdated. --Panam2014 (talk) 19:33, 20 December 2018 (UTC)
@Panam2014: The question mark isn't helpful to readers. You could put "at least" next to the number or provide a footnote but the best option is to do some work and find out the actual number.--Obi2canibe (talk) 19:44, 20 December 2018 (UTC)

Reverts

Can you please explain exactly what the reason for your revert on my edits is? I'm trying to homogenize all the templates of the regional parliaments of Spain. Thanks. TheRichic (Messages here) 19:19, 20 December 2018 (UTC)

I did provide an edit summary. The guidance on Template:Infobox legislature gives what should be included under the house_type field - "upper house", "lower house", "unicameral house", "unicameral", "bicameral", "tricameral" or "tetracameral". In this case it should be "unicameral" or "unicameral house". MOS:SMALLFONT requires small font sizes to be used sparingly, particularly in infoboxes. If the native name was meant to be in small size those who designed the infobox would have designed it that way.--Obi2canibe (talk) 19:39, 20 December 2018 (UTC)

Rajapaksa vs Wickramasinghe

Why are you repeatedly inserting Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka on all pages when he was sacked and Ranil Wickramasinghe has been reinstated? --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 06:38, 31 December 2018 (UTC)

You have been editing Wikipedia for 14 years and yet you do not understand basics such as WP:V. Instead of providing WP:RS for your edits you justify your edits by facts included in other articles. Seriously, have you not heard of WP:NOTSOURCE? Worse still, you change content and then leave in tact sources which verify the content you've removed.
I have been painstakingly editing these articles for a number of years to ensure that they are accurate and properly sourced. With one stroke you've managed to destroy their integrity. Pathetic.--Obi2canibe (talk) 16:59, 1 January 2019 (UTC)
Calling someone pathetic is not good idea. Maybe you could read WP:CIVIL. Ultimately, at the end of the day, you did restore my edits. Next time, a more constructive approach would be to just add the refs rather than just undo an edit that shows the wrong person as the Prime Minister of a Country. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 18:10, 1 January 2019 (UTC)
So no acknowledgement that you violated a WP:CCPOL. Just expect others to clear up after you. Do rules not apply to you? Is there something special about you?--Obi2canibe (talk) 20:18, 1 January 2019 (UTC)

there is no overall popular vote in US legislatures as each candidate is elected separately especially in the senate where not all the seats are up so saying in 2018 the democrats won the popular vote but lost the senate is kind of stupid because they won the popular vote for seats up they did more seats then the republicans עם ישראל חי (talk) 18:30, 1 January 2019 (UTC)

You've clearly misunderstood the significance of Category:Elections not won by the popular vote winner and its sub-categories. They are not for elections where the number of seats are determined by the overall vote (e.g. Israel). If you looked at the articles in the category you will see none of them are determined by overall vote. No democracy would have an electoral system which is determined by overall vote but for some reason elections could be won by the party that did not win by the popular vote.
The categories are for a particular phenomenon of elections based on constituencies, such as the U.S., where one party wins the most number of seats but another receives the most number of total votes. This occurs because of particular voting patterns (e.g. where one party is extremely strong in some constituencies but weak in others) or where constituencies aren't equal in size (e.g. US Senate).--Obi2canibe (talk) 20:39, 1 January 2019 (UTC)
no the category is for actual elections where one candidate wins more votes but loses the election which doesn't apply to us legislature elections. עם ישראל חי (talk) 21:32, 1 January 2019 (UTC)
I have started a discussion at WP:WPE&R.--Obi2canibe (talk) 22:02, 1 January 2019 (UTC)

To the so called authority who decides what history is

I don't agree with Obi2canibe's overtly tyrannic controls over articles. There is no sense for actuality and factual(ity). You don't get to decide what the actual history is. History is what has happened. You can change it if you have a time machine. Have you got one Obi2canibe? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jjwitz94 (talkcontribs) 15:28, 28 January 2019 (UTC)

Left office

The left office column you did insert here is internally contradictory. With the calling of new elections the term of the legislature ceases to exist. Since then the president of the Chamber serves solely in his/her capacity as president of the Diputación Permanente. There is a reason to not give much importance to the left office column.--Asqueladd (talk) 21:27, 3 February 2019 (UTC)

@Asqueladd: This is true of most elected posts but we include the left office date in infoboxes, lists etc because most readers won't know when the legislature was dissolved.
I could not find any sources for the left office date so I have used the dates in the individual biographical articles for each president (in Spanish and English Wikipedia).--Obi2canibe (talk) 14:03, 10 February 2019 (UTC)

Hello Obi2canibe,

News
Discussions of interest
  • Two elements of CSD G6 have been split into their own criteria: R4 for redirects in the "File:" namespace with the same name as a file or redirect at Wikimedia Commons (Discussion), and G14 for disambiguation pages which disambiguate zero pages, or have "(disambiguation)" in the title but disambiguate a single page (Discussion).
  • {{db-blankdraft}} was merged into G13 (Discussion)
  • A discussion recently closed with no consensus on whether to create a subject-specific notability guideline for theatrical plays.
  • There is an ongoing discussion on a proposal to create subject-specific notability guidelines for chemicals and organism taxa.
Reminders
  • NPR is not a binary keep / delete process. In many cases a redirect may be appropriate. The deletion policy and its associated guideline clearly emphasise that not all unsuitable articles must be deleted. Redirects are not contentious. See a classic example of the templates to use. More templates are listed at the R template index. Reviewers who are not aware, do please take this into consideration before PROD, CSD, and especially AfD because not even all admins are aware of such policies, and many NAC do not have a full knowledge of them.
NPP Tools Report
  • Superlinks – allows you to check an article's history, logs, talk page, NPP flowchart (on unpatrolled pages) and more without navigating away from the article itself.

To District or Not to District

You have reverted my change on S. Thomas' College, Gurutalawa from Category:Schools in Badulla to Category:Schools in Badulla District. I'm currently adding more articles for schools in Sri Lanka under each district where I can find enough references. I removed District part from the category because there are 2 schools under the category without district in the name. Also, after checking how other schools in different district laid out Category:Schools in Kandy is an example. However, if you would like to keep District because S. Thomas' College, Gurutalawa is not within the Badulla city limits, then I guess we have to find a way to link all other 2 schools (future) ones too. – NirvanaTodayt@lk 02:37, 18 March 2019 (UTC)

@Nirvanatoday: - We only include only one geographic location category in each article and it's the lowest available tier i.e. city, if available, otherwise district, otherwise province. The name of the school is irrelevant, only its location matters. The categorisation has to be accurate as well - S. Thomas' College, Gurutalawa isn't in Badulla city therefore it should not be included in Category:Schools in Badulla. But it is in Badulla District so it can be included in Category:Schools in Badulla District.--Obi2canibe (talk) 19:38, 24 March 2019 (UTC)
