Neil Peart

Ha, I was just reading that article on the mobile app; thanks for cleaning that up a bit. I assume that in the next couple of days folks will turn this into FA material. Did you read any of his books? Are they any good? I'll bear a lifelong grudge against him for penning "The Trees"--I loved Rush but hated those lyrics for their easy allegorical condemnation of progressive politics. Now I'm going to go upstairs to bring down some old CDs. Permanent Waves may still be my favorite. Drmies (talk) 23:59, 10 January 2020 (UTC)

@Drmies: I've never really listened to their music much, though it came up on the radio and in mixes on occasion. I've read a little of the Clockwork series with Anderson, but I haven't read any of his nonfiction. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 00:01, 11 January 2020 (UTC)

Hi, hope you're doing well. I happened upon these articles and was wondering if they're really needed: the only events here are apocryphal, yet it looks like they're being set forth as historical facts. Do you have any additional insight on why you created them? Best, Dekimasuよ! 15:02, 22 January 2020 (UTC)

@Dekimasu: They are based on the contents of the linked articles. If that information is incorrect, then we need to fix the linked articles. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 18:12, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
The linked articles don't treat the events described as factual, however. They are described as "legendary narratives". Both articles state that "there remains no conclusive evidence though that supports this historical figure actually reigning." I think the way Emperor Suinin lists him as having died at the age of 138 is sufficient to make it clear that the timelines should not be treated as historical information. Similarly, we don't have the birth of Methuselah listed at 31st century BC, nor is his death listed at 22nd century BC. There is also no mention of King Arthur at 5th century in England or 6th century in England (though he is mentioned at 537, it just says "(approximate date)"). Dekimasuよ! 18:35, 22 January 2020 (UTC)

Hi Nihonjoe, I'm a freelance journalist (print/audio) researching a story about the unappreciated community that bustles behind the scenes here. Quick translation request

Hi, I am currently in the process of making some changes to "Doesn't Really Matter", which is currently in the process of a good article review. I happened to see you at Wikipedia:Translators available and was wondering how to interpret this source. I am able to generally understand what was mentioned on the website, but the inconsistency of Google Translate has muddled people's names (Kan Chinhua) and phrases (the lyrics of Sabi are colored with the greetings of Asian countries such as "Malamine Tamara Dannyabad ..." I made a unique device) in the second paragraph, as well as misinterpreting the first sentence of the third paragraph. The latter has caused some confusion on this section of the article. Google Translate has printed out the translation, "However, after the song was completed, Janet himself requested that the release be discontinued, saying that the lyrics image is different from the original song". The reviewer and I have misinterpreted her reasoning, as she either mentioned not to change the lyrics of her song, or wanted new lyrics to be written instead. Are you able to briefly summarize the website since it only contains four short paragraphs? Thank you. — Angryjoe1111 (talk) 12:40, 12 April 2020 (UTC)

You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, 1992 St. George earthquake), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Improving the articles about the Culture of Japan and Chinese culture

I observed that you reversed my edits from the pages about the Culture of Japan and Chinese culture. My main interests are related to quantitative cross-cultural research. I want to improve the articles by adding information about the characteristics of those cultures as explored by global comparative studies. You wrote that my edits were confusing to the readers. I recognize that I added too many graphs that were visually unappealing and the texts elaborated too much on various statistical details which may not be suitable for encyclopedic articles. Also, many quotes from the section about stereotypes, which I added in the article about the Culture of Japan, were too long and redundant. Apart from the scatterplots, I also used maps that showed cultural differences using shades of color. I think those were quite clear and informative. What do you consider was wrong with them? I want to continue working at those articles and I consider that quantitative research, as well as viewing the features of cultures from a global and comparative perspective are just as important and informative for the readers as the many qualitative descriptions about customs and traditions which are presently contained within the articles about Japanese and Chinese cultures. Apart from the problems which I recognized about my edits, what other suggestions for improvement do you want to give me? Thank you very much. --TheCultureDemystifier (talk) 20:59, 17 July 2020 (UTC)

Hello Nihonjoe, I have a request for you that is a bit of a shot in the dark.

The #Japan section at Ages of consent in Asia is one that I see often cited by people all over the Internet, but it has major gaps in coverage/sourcing problems that have not been resolved for years. I suspect this is because the relevant sources are all written in Japanese. For instance, the article vaguely states that Municipalities and prefectures have their own particular laws. I have never been able to find any source in English that shows a prefecture-by-prefecture map, or any sort of legal text. The current source that gives the age of consent in Tokyo as 18 appears to be a blog post (!!!), and the second is a dead link (!!!). Are there close-in-age exemptions? What entails "parental approval"?

Would you be willing to take on this subject yourself? If not, do you know another user I could reach out to? — Goszei (talk) 08:23, 19 July 2020 (UTC)

@Goszei: I suggest asking at WT:JAPAN. This is not an area in which I am familiar with the topics, and I wouldn't know where to begin to look for information. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 17:12, 19 July 2020 (UTC)

Disputed shoal

Hey Nihonjoe~ Great template! I wanted to ask you about Template:Infobox disputed islands. The James Shoal page uses this template, but there are no actual islands on James Shoal. Is there a way to write 'disputed shoal' instead of 'disputed island' in the infobox? I feel that writing the word 'island' adds a bias to the page because it implies there is something above the surface of the ocean on the shoal. Malaysia's claim to the area is partially based on the fact that there are no islands on the shoal. Thanks for any feedback. Geographyinitiative (talk) 14:47, 22 July 2020 (UTC)

Can you see what I mean? The infobox on the James Shoal Wikipedia page prominently displays the words 'Disputed island', as if there is such an island, when in point of fact, none exists. If an artifical island is ever created on the shoal, then we could reconsider this. However, I think the wisest course at this juncture is to either remove the inaporopriate infobox or make it so that 'Disputed shoal' can be subbed in for 'Disputed island'.Geographyinitiative (talk) 14:51, 22 July 2020 (UTC)

Inappropriate to edit a candidates page

It is inappropriate for anyone either associated with the campaign or with their opponent to edit a wiki page. I have reverted your edits back multiple times. Please refrain from making any additional changes without first discussing them with the community. In deleting any controversial topics and replacing them with glowing reports of the candidates awards, and his achievements just prior to an election, you are undermining the integrity of the article.

If you feel a change is warranted please bring it up with the rest of the community first. Thank you very kindly. Vayapues2 (talk) 00:56, 12 August 2020 (UTC)

@Vayapues2: What are you talking about? I've never edited the page more than the one time when I reverted your edits. In fact, I've never even viewed the page before now. If you continue edit warring, I (or another admin) will block you for it. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 15:44, 12 August 2020 (UTC)
Responding to the message you left on my page:
I have neither added nor deleted anything. All I have done is revert the changes you made back to what they originally were prior to your making them. When you come onto a candidates page and alter it a few months out from an election, and when all the changes you make erase potentially embarrassing facts, and when you replace them with lists of his awards, etc, that is always going to trigger concern about objectivity, and cause the rest of the community to revert your edits. Vayapues2 (talk) 16:00, 12 August 2020 (UTC)
The Sim Gill Article, as it is currently written is the same as it has appeared for the past many years. With the exception of a few grammatical updates, and it looks like a few updates relating to current events, such as a fact added by someone recently about an event that occurred in 2020.
Over the past month, various individuals, usually anonymously, have been repeatedly vandalizing the page, removing things less favorable to this candidate, and rewriting the article to include flattering information from his bio page. I and others have worked to revert these inappropriate changes, that are presumably being made by the campaign or on its behalf. I know of at least one member of the project who has gone so far as to email the media regarding the changes being made to the page.
The article as it currently sits is in its original form. Those of us who have worked to restore and protect it have not altered it in any way, other than to revert the changes being made by individuals favorable to the campaign.
If your intent was not to do this, then I apologize. Perhaps you didn't realize that we were reverting back to the original article. In which case I would invite you to help us monitor the page to help ensure that those logging in anonymously and otherwise who keep altering it to look like a campaign website rather than a neutral article are kept in check. Vayapues2 (talk) 16:15, 12 August 2020 (UTC)
(edit conflict) @Vayapues2: Again, you have no clue what you're talking about here. You're tossing out accusations left and right, accusing people of bias for which there is no evidence. Seems to me you might be protesting about things too much, given your virulent activity on that article. Perhaps it's time to take a step back and stop editing it. You seem too closely connected to this topic (most likely a candidate opposing Gill). ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 16:18, 12 August 2020 (UTC)
I haven't accused you of anything. My comments have been professional and respectful. I am in no way associated with either the campaign or against it. If I were, I would be the one altering the article. All that I and the rest of the community are doing is restoring the article to its original form. No need to raise the temperature of the discussion.
I will just leave my earlier offer out there on the table. If you do not have any bias, than I accept that at face value, wish you the best, and invite you to join with us in protecting the article from those trying to edit it to either favor or harm the campaign. It is important that we protect the integrity of any political article around an election! Wish you all the best my brother! Vayapues2 (talk) 18:08, 12 August 2020 (UTC)
@Vayapues2: Your very first comment was "It is inappropriate for anyone either associated with the campaign or with their opponent to edit a wiki page." That's basically saying that I'm one of those two. Also, you don't speak for the "rest of the community", so stop saying that you know what they want. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 18:39, 12 August 2020 (UTC)

Revoking permission to move pages

Hello Nihonjoe, since you commented on WP:ANI#Concerns about AichiWikiFixer's competence and lack of communication, I'm hoping you can coach me a little, since I'm out of practice with most admin tools. SnowFire's suggestion to revoke permission to move pages sounded like a no-brainer, so I thought I'd just go ahead and do that. But then I realized two things: ① I don't know how to remove user rights, and I see no how-to instructions for admins on Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Granting and revoking user rights and Wikipedia:Page mover. ② The user doesn't have the page mover permission. If I understand it correctly, then, what they do doesn't require any permission. So the only thing we can do is ask them. Right?

On a related note; asking you since you have 日本 in your username: Do you think the lack of communication might be explained by a language barrier? ◅ Sebastian 14:00, 23 November 2020 (UTC)

TfD Closure

I am a little confused by your close of Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2020_November_17#Template:Dashboard.wikiedu.org_assignment. Mainly, I don't understand what PAG rationale makes the keep votes (which were roughly equal in number) "stronger" than delete votes. And I'm also not sure why it was closed very soon after the 7th day when discussion was still active - with 3 extra responses on the day of closure; why wasn't it relisted? I'm also a bit concerned by the principle that a third party software (to my understanding, anyway) can mass-put a template on various articles, not bother clean it up after it is no longer relevant, something even multiple keep voters expressed concerns with and supported the removal of. TfD is, and often does, have closes which deal with these problems, and I think your close, despite all the discussion and substantial support for talk message conversion / orphaning expired usages, puts us right back to before the TfD started with no progress made. Hope you can advise on these concerns. Thanks, ProcrastinatingReader (talk) 07:22, 2 December 2020 (UTC)

@ProcrastinatingReader: My rationale for the closure was very clear: those arguing for keeping the template had stronger arguments. And progress was made: deleting the template is (currently) not an option, so other remedies for fixing the issue need to be explored. If you are concerned about "third party software" doing things, that's not a discussion for TFD or my talk page. Bring it up at the appropriate venue and express your concerns so other editors can participate int he discussion and come to a consensus regarding that. Perhaps the Village pump or Wikipedia talk:Education program. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 16:26, 2 December 2020 (UTC)
that's not a discussion for [...] my talk page no, but this is the place to respectfully question the accuracy of your close, whose short statement and claim of stronger arguments is slightly dismissive to a torn TfD. I think it's fair to ask how you came to the conclusion of them being "stronger arguments"? For example, is there any PAG support or precedent for this kind of template? ProcrastinatingReader (talk) 16:46, 2 December 2020 (UTC)
I've modified my close. Hopefully, that addresses your concerns, even if you don't like the result. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 19:00, 2 December 2020 (UTC)
Yes, that's clearer and helpful. Thanks! ProcrastinatingReader (talk) 19:08, 2 December 2020 (UTC)
Nihonjoe, I'm glad to see that you at least expanded on your close rather than just being dismissive to ProcrastinatingReader, but to be blunt with you, it's still a bad close. Lines such as Any discussion regarding converting the template into something else can be had elsewhere reflect that you are not very familiar with TfD, where the D stands for "discussion", not "deletion" as at AfD.
There were significantly more !votes for some sort of modification than just for keeping (at a very rough count, about 14 to 9), and some of the keep !votes were just arguing "I like to know when a student has edited a page", which isn't an argument against converting to a talk page message and thus I would've expected to be discounted.
Regarding the weighting, you wrote in your expansion that However, talk page messages are often archived, which makes it so that information no longer appears unless you go digging through the archives as a rebuttal of the argument for conversion to a talk page message. This is, unless I missed it, not a point that was raised in the discussion itself, which raises supervote concerns. It also isn't particularly compelling: the obvious response is that, if an article is active enough that discussions on its talk page are being archived, it's also likely to be monitored well enough that contributions by student editors will have been reviewed and integrated by the time that happens.
Given the above, I would ask that you please reconsider your close. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 05:09, 6 December 2020 (UTC)
I was thinking of {{DNAU}}, but that works too. ProcrastinatingReader (talk) 11:47, 6 December 2020 (UTC)
I'm sorry, but I don't have time to keep re-evaluating it for everyone who comes along. I have too many IRL things on my plate. I've completely undone the closure and you can have someone else do it. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 23:35, 7 December 2020 (UTC)

FYI

An then-new-ish (since July 2020) editor you blocked late last year has a new, unblocked declared alt-account.[1]

It's been a few months so if his current edits are not themselves disruptive, perhaps a "block with an opportunity to unblock ONE account, with appropriate conditions" either immediately or after a short "block-evasion-penalty-period" (say, 4-5 days, the age of the new account) might be in order. If his new account's contributions are similar to the old one, then it's just a routine block-evading sock. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 18:34, 23 February 2021 (UTC)

@Davidwr: Looks like they were blocked by Dreamy Jazz. The best thing to do in cases like this is to report them on WP:SPI. They get handled faster that way. Thanks again! ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 23:03, 23 February 2021 (UTC)
SPI would've almost certainly led to a fast-block without a nuanced comparison between the two editors' conduct. Since you blocked the first editor, you were presumably more familiar with his past than others, and could make a comparison. That said, if Praxidicae took the time to look into this and came to the conclusion that the new account's edits were the "same disruptive edits", well, that pretty much closes the case. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 00:02, 24 February 2021 (UTC)
I mean they quite literally admitted it. CUPIDICAE💕 01:23, 24 February 2021 (UTC)

WP:ANIME/Magazines subpages

Hello Nihonjoe, I've been cleaning up loose ends at the WikiProject lately, and noticed that there are several hundred subpages that you created, mostly circa 2010 (see [2] for a list), dedicated to the monthly issues of anime/manga magazines.

For the sake of reducing the number of pages to maintain, would you object if I substituted those individual month subpages to the main year pages (for example, this one) and got rid of the monthly ones? Related question: if they should be subst'd, should they be redirects (none of the samples I checked had incoming links except from each other and the month links at Wikipedia:WikiProject Anime and manga/Magazines, which I would remove), should I CSD them with G6, or should you CSD them with G7? — Goszei (talk) 03:11, 24 February 2021 (UTC)

@Goszei: Feel free to subst them if you wish. Space really isn't an issue, though, so it's not really necessary. If you do, let me know when they are all substed and I can delete them. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 17:19, 24 February 2021 (UTC)
I now have subst'd all the ones listed at [3], so the month pages are ready for deletion. Re:space, I meant 'reduced maintenance' in the context of future editor effort, rather than WP:PERFORMANCE. — Goszei (talk) 19:38, 24 February 2021 (UTC)

I have an unrelated question that I should ask since I have a thread open. What was your process for making the "On this day" entries for the portal (see the examples for February).
