Oops, my bad. Somehow I completely missed that there was a separate section about user talk pages on WP:TALK. -- Hawaiian717 15:29, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

Userbox Dune Spice
Hallo, you've changed the picture of a Dune userbox (that I host in my userspace) some time ago. I don't like it with this picture and will revert this. If you like the other version better you can always get your own ubx in your space. Also please don't mark such a change as minor. Thanks. Bisco 17:30, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
Two things
One, I hope you don't mind I tagged the Kagawa district cat you created this morning. I think the rationale for of/in is that they don't actually exist anymore, so they aren't "in" anywhere. When I made the 県別 for the municipalities and the districts, I just took the parent cats names (Category:Dissolved municipalities of Japan and Category:Dissolved districts of Japan).
Second, there was a bit of confusion around Uehara Azumi and Azumi Uehara. A new user created both articles with identical content. A second user made a redirect from the MOS-JA correct (Given Family) order to the other one. I don't know if I should just revert the redirect, or, if it is best handled by deleting the one article and starting over. Maybe someday, I'll get up the nerve to throw the rest of my free time out the window and RFA so I can stop bothering you about stuff like this. :-) Neier 05:46, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
- I'm fine with the renaming. It helps keep things consistent (even though people seem to keep changing the wording that's acceptable--the format I had for the title of that cat was what was being used when I created it). And the redirect from Uehara Azumi to Azumi Uehara was the correct way to handle that. So, no worries. (^_^) ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 06:01, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
- Oh, wow. I just realized it was 2006 when you created it. Weird. :-) Anyway, things will be stable soon. Neier 06:15, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

Fidika
I don't know. One part of me says, it's a sockpuppet of an indef-blocked user, we should block it. The other says, if he's come back and hasn't violated copyright for this long, maybe he deserves a second chance? I looked at a couple of his contributions and they were not likely to be copyvios, IMO. But there are a lot more contributions. Mangojuicetalk 11:32, 22 April 2007 (UTC)
- That's basically what I was thinking. The articles I've come across so far are really badly written, however. I guess we can just check on him every now and then. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 17:12, 22 April 2007 (UTC)
- Well... actually now that I've thought about it, it bothers me that only the two of us know about the past history of this new account. If we think it's okay for him to edit, we should probably insist that the link be made explicit. And also, once that's done we should make this judgement explicit and clear, so he doesn't get blocked for "sockpuppetry" without further abuse. Mangojuicetalk 19:13, 22 April 2007 (UTC)
- I'll take care of it. I'm going to unblock & reblock with a summary, redirect Fidika's userpage to the new user, and inform the new user about what we've decided. Mangojuicetalk 15:01, 23 April 2007 (UTC)
- Done. I've also put a note on the new account referring back to the old account. I've asked him that it remain there (or somewhere else visible). Mangojuicetalk 15:39, 23 April 2007 (UTC)

- Just a note on the signatures; I know some people complained about having the iconography in your signatures, and you invited them to install, etc. I have done this myself, so it doesn't appears ???. But even so, when reading the above discussion it took me a minute to figure out that Ganryuu was not you. To those who do not know the language of your signatures, it creates an unreadable situation. With one person doing it, it's easy. "Oh, that's Nihonjoe". With two, it takes a short bit to figure out. If lots of people did it in an active discussion, it becomes virtually impossible to track what is being said by whom. Just some feedback, --Durin 13:50, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
Maybe you can help
Hi, Joe, I'm hoping you're still online. I have a problem and originally sent a message to an admin involved more in this matter. But I was wondering in the meantime if you could have a look at the problem and see what you think.
The matter in question can be found here. If you could leave a reply on my talkpage, and/or Nishkid's I would appreciate it. Cheers, John Smith's 18:44, 25 April 2007 (UTC)
- I think Nishikid64 is handling things well, so I'll decline to become involved. The only comment I'll make is that both you and Giovanni need to cool your heels and be more pleasant with each other. Constant accusations of misconduct on the other's part will do nothing to help you work to a resolution agreeable to both of you. If you find that you can't respond in a civil manner at a particular time, take a walk or do something else for a while and then come back to it.
- Remember that you may not always be able to read the tone of a message as it's just text, so always assume good faith and work on that assumption, even if the other person doesn't. You have control of yourself, so you can choose how you wish to react to any given situation. As long as you always make sure you are remaining civil, things will eventually work out.
- Hmm...looks like I switched to advice mode for a bit. Please take it to heart. I've seen quite a bit of improvement in how you handle things from when I first ran into you, so i know you can do it. Giovanni has improved a lot over the last few months as well, so I know he can do it, too. If you do your part, then you'll find it much more pleasant to work together. Hope that helps. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 19:23, 25 April 2007 (UTC)
- Ok, I didn't want you to make a decision just hear your thoughts as to whether it is ok to move someone's comments. But if you don't even want to do that I understand fully. I was just so outraged by Giovanni's repeated interference in my correspondance with the new guy that I was reaching out for help.
- By the way, I would assume good faith with him but he's admitted (as I showed on Nish's page) that he doesn't think I deserve it. How can I assume good faith on his part after that? John Smith's 20:06, 25 April 2007 (UTC)
- Generally, you shouldn't move someone else's comments (there are some exceptions, but this probably wasn't one). As for assuming good faith, if Giovanni doesn't want to do it, that's his choice. However, you should still always assume good faith yourself, regardless of how the other person is acting or reacting. Don't worry so much about whether the other person isn't following the policies and guidelines. Instead, make sure you are following them. Then, when situations like this come up and someone is looking into the issue, they'll see that you are assuming good faith and acting in a civil manner rather than the opposite, and that will help bolster anything you are doing instead of people pointing out that neither side in the dispute is following the guidelines. Just focus on making sure you are abiding by them, and let the rest take care of itself. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 20:12, 25 April 2007 (UTC)
Thank you for the new badge of honor
Thank you for the new badge of honor! [1][2] --Durin 13:14, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
- I'm so happy you think being flippant is a badge of honor. This only solidifies my opinion that you don't give a damn about any opinion other than your own. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 15:49, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
- I think you miss the point. When people insult the person who states an opinion, I don't find it necessary to engage them in discussion. It is usually the case that the person is unwilling to engage in good faith discussions about a given topic. As a predicate to discussion, I refuse to engage anyone who is willing to descends to such levels, such as you calling me flippant. You want to make a "fine distinction" but the reality is you are attacking me, and not any points I've raised. Until such time as you're willing to drop personal attacks, there's no point in discussing things with you since you lack the tools necessary to engage in a meaningful, open and honest discussion. I hope you have a pleasant day, --Durin 16:32, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
WP:RFA/Coren
Okay, so if I'm not mistaken, only the actual oppose votes should be counted, of which, after yours, there are 5 or 6. Why are there all of those ones and twos everywhere? Again, this is just my opinion, but I don't think voters should be putting number signs anywhere other than in front of their vote. I've been tring to fix this a lot. Apparently I can't. Can you? --Tractorkingsfan 04:42, 27 April 2007 (UTC)
- Fixed. The # signs are required for the count to continue working properly. As long as you put a colon (:) after the #, it won't increment the numbers. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 04:48, 27 April 2007 (UTC)
- Gotcha. Yeah, I had the wrong idea. So anytime you do a new comment, you should put a # sign (which keeps the count from restarting), but if you but a colon after the #, then you can have a properly formatted reply that isn't necessarily a new oppose. Am I right? Sorry for the confusion. --Tractorkingsfan 04:52, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

Akanemoto has made several thousand edits in recent months. More than 90% are to his userspace, and it's all in Japanese. Unusual names - Romaji
Heya. Thanks again for your extensive work on this list - I do think it'll come in quite useful in future. I am curious, however, about the romaji readings given for each placename. For many of these, I understand where the "standard" reading comes from, and thus why it would be unusual or unexpected for the actual reading to be the one used. Two examples of these many are Chitose, Hokkaido, which is written as 幌美内 (Poropinai) and Ishinomaki, Miyagi (合戦谷, Kasegai).
However, there are a number (I'm looking primarily at the Okinawan ones, now, only because those are the ones which happened to catch my eye) for which the romaji name given is just as... unexpected or unusual as the actual placename. Tomigusuku (保栄茂), which is given as "Bin" in the romaji column, is one such glaring example - no matter how you parse that, no matter which on/kun readings you use, there's no way that three kanji can together be read "bin", right?
I'm not trying to criticize or attack you, nor do I wish to suggest that you/we should look over every single one on this entire list to make sure they all make sense. I'm just curious if these romaji readings are all taken directly from the Japanese page you translated, or where they come from. Just wanted to point out the inconsistency - could be something as minor as an oversight or typo. Thanks. LordAmeth 22:09, 4 May 2007 (UTC)
- Bin is correct. http://www.yu-bin.net/pc/post.cgi/47/0/9010214/index.html and, that site can probably be used to verify any other questions that arise. - Neier 22:39, 4 May 2007 (UTC)
You're probably looking for User talk:Nihonjoe, the creator of Wikipedia:WikiProject Japan/Place names with unusual readings. I only made two edits to the project page. I share your belief that it'll be quite useful. Fg2 07:35, 5 May 2007 (UTC)
- Wow, sorry about that. I don't know why I got the two of you confused. Gomen. LordAmeth 08:28, 5 May 2007 (UTC)
Hiya. The above is from a conversation I began on User:Fg2's talk page, accidentally confusing him for the person- you- who's been doing all the work on that page. I'm still a bit confused as to the logic of the romaji column. If the romaji is supposed to represent a normal, natural way of guessing at the pronunciation of the characters, and the location column is meant to give the actual (unusual) placename, then why are so many of the romaji entries inscrutable? LordAmeth 08:33, 5 May 2007 (UTC)
- LordAmeth, first, I apologize for continuously interrupting on other people's talk pages. The romaji column is the way the place is pronounced, and is the place for which the kanji is listed. The location (in most cases) is the city or town where the strange-named place can be found, and has nothing to do with the kanji. So, 合戦谷 is an area in Ishinomaki (石巻); Bin is in 豊見城市 (Tomigusuku-shi), etc. Tomigusuku is an exception to the rule, as its "place" is the entire city. I don't know if blanking the field in that case is better or worse. I think the location is a nice column, because most of these are not city or town names and it is good to know where they can be found. Neier 09:03, 5 May 2007 (UTC)
- なるほど。That makes sense. Thanks for the explanation, and sorry for the bother. LordAmeth 11:21, 5 May 2007 (UTC)
Neier is correct in what each column is for. Thanks, Fg2, for adding the explanation to the page itself. I didn't think of that since I was the one doing the paqge and I knew what each column was for. And yes, some of the pronunciations of place names are very bizarre and unusual. A few of them really surprised me when i was transliterating. (^_^) ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 18:51, 5 May 2007 (UTC)

- What are you talking about here? If you note the date on the message you're quoting, it's from almost a year ago. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 19:21, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
Hi; a new explosion of discussion has started on the talk page. The good news is luckily, everyone involved has more or less stayed civil and really stayed to the talk page (I don't recall seeing any edit wars related to this recently, which is really great).
There was significant discussion of why the previous poll was not conducted well. The reason I'm leaving a note is that some users are using your comments from this poll to support their position, most notably your usage of a google test. We are shying away from using a standard google test here because, since the dispute is so well advertised, it is not quite appropriate (national news on both sides are gaming for search results, personal blogs of people from the respective countries distort it, etc.) There is even an article from the Korean times talking about the cyberspace naming campaign here that talks about it.
Anyway, I'm not trying to convince you of my side (the comments above are a subset of the ones I have left). Others have responded with their own ideas. I would appreciate it if you could take a look over what has been said and leave your thoughts on the matter. It's frustrating to have people say, "Well, Nihonjoe feels this way," when I really don't know if you do or not since you simply had a short sentence on it a year ago. Fair use rationale
I've responded to your comment on Betacommand's talk page. You may wish to review the licensing policies, a fair-use rationale cannot simply be plastered onto an image. There are rules that need to be followed to protect the project, and you're doing the project a disservice by attacking a user who's trying to keep lawyers away and is acting in-line with the interests of the foundation. If you are unable to follow the licensing policies, then you must refrain from uploading content. - CHAIRBOY (☎) 22:15, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
- All I'm wondering is why he's wasting everyone else's time when he could just as easily pop in a fair use rationale himself in the same amount of time it takes to have his bot go through tagging everything. They are all logos, so the fair use rationale would be exactly the same for each one. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 22:17, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
