RFA2024 update: phase I concluded, phase II begins
Hi there! Phase I of the Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/2024 review has concluded, with several impactful changes gaining community consensus and proceeding to various stages of implementation. Some proposals will be implemented in full outright; others will be discussed at phase II before being implemented; and still others will proceed on a trial basis before being brought to phase II. The following proposals have gained consensus:
- Proposals 2 and 9b (phase II discussion): Add a reminder of civility norms at RfA and Require links for claims of specific policy violations
- Proposal 3b (in trial): Make the first two days discussion-only
- Proposal 13 (in trial): Admin elections
- Proposal 14 (implemented): Suffrage requirements
- Proposals 16 and 16c (phase II discussion): Allow the community to initiate recall RfAs and Community recall process based on dewiki
- Proposal 17 (phase II discussion): Have named Admins/crats to monitor infractions
- Proposal 24 (phase II discussion): Provide better mentoring for becoming an admin and the RfA process
- Proposal 25 (implemented): Require nominees to be extended confirmed
See the project page for a full list of proposals and their outcomes. A huge thank-you to everyone who has participated so far :) looking forward to seeing lots of hard work become a reality in phase II. theleekycauldron (talk), via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 08:09, 5 May 2024 (UTC)

Congratulations! - Today's TFA, Felix M. Warburg House, was written by Vami_IV and Epicgenius, introduced: "This article is about another of the great houses that once lined Fifth Avenue in New York. Specifically, this is the mansion of Felix M. Warburg, a Jewish financier who ignored fears of anti-Semitic reprisal to his decided to build himself a big Gothic manor in the middle of New York City. Although the Warburgs no longer remain, their legacy does: the museum is now the home of the Jewish Museum (Manhattan) and the building largely survives as they left it. It's a beautiful building and I hope you will all enjoy it."! - in memory --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:30, 10 May 2024 (UTC)

Hello, I am new here. I want to start with the copyedits. How do I start? Are there any particular tips for starters like me? --Beulaah (talk) 09:46, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Beulaah, so sorry for the late reply. You can find a guide for copyediting articles here, and a good page that you might start on is here. Welcome to Wikipedia, and if you have any questions, please do ask! The Night Watch (talk) 23:24, 1 June 2024 (UTC)
NPP
Hi there, I hope you are well. I'd like to get some feedback on whether I'm currently eligible for the NPP right. I am an active reviewer of AfC and participated in several AfDs with in-depth discussions. Could you please review my edits and provide feedback on whether I'm ready to to get this right? Thanks! GrabUp - Talk 15:51, 4 June 2024 (UTC)
- Was the feedback provided yesterday at User_talk:Extraordinary_Writ#AFC_Reviewers not adequate? Hey man im josh (talk) 19:16, 4 June 2024 (UTC)
- I want to get feedback, other than extraordinary, from someone I haven't talked before. Extraordinary's feedback is not bad, but it is repetitive. GrabUp - Talk 01:19, 5 June 2024 (UTC)
- I have to agree with Extraordinary Writ there, and there isn't much that I would add. I think you're moving a bit too quickly right now, and some more time for patrolling with AfC and tagging for notability etc. be good. Applying any sooner than that would be premature in my opinion, especially now that it has been only about a month since your last NPR request was declined. Just develop a meaningful track record and another admin might be willing to grant eventually if they find you have enough experience. The Night Watch (talk) 01:27, 5 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hey,
- Thanks for your reply, but I wanted independent feedback. Josh came and just finished by sharing extraordinary feedback. I knew after seeing his feedback, no one would want to differ with him.
- Whatever, you said, “Just develop a meaningful track record.” Does that mean I don’t have a good track record now? Are my AfD participations still WP:SNOW, or have I engaged in deeper discussions to show my knowledge? I want to know where my main problem is!
- Thanks for the reply. I will acknowledge and try to make myself better. GrabUp - Talk 01:52, 5 June 2024 (UTC)
- When I mean a meaningful track record, I mean demonstrating your understanding of Wikipedia policies beyond deletion and just spend some more time with AfC and elsewhere to practice. Perhaps for about two months. Maybe continue your existing work and perhaps start patrolling the new pages feed and doing maintenance taggings. And I recommend applying at PERM instead of asking on a specific talk page, as it would allow more eyes on your next request and they might give you more detailed feedback than I might have. The Night Watch (talk) 19:38, 5 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks. At the time of my past decline, I was told to improve the deletion process. I also have enough AfC track record to judge me. I don’t know why my PERM was declined based on “moving quickly.” At least I should be able to have a trial like others. Extraordinary also said that “It’s on me whenever I can make the PERM request,” and you and he are just recommending that I wait. However, they just declined the PERM, saying you both are recommending to wait without seeing or judging my work. When asked, they just ignored me. GrabUp - Talk 00:09, 6 June 2024 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) @Grabup Hi there. You are definitely doing a great job; you are interestingly a proficient editor. I can say that I have been seeing you around lately at AfDs and your rationales usually make sense. I get the frustration of your requests for permission being declined, I have been there and trust me. But let's not blame the admins for not granting rights, you know, there've been a trend of users who misuse these tools and their rights getting revoked. This is what they're trying to avoid, they (and as a matter of fact, Wikipedia) wants new page patrollers who are well-grounded to the core in our core content policies, and in achieving that, they have to put in more scrutiny while reviewing requests for permission. This is something very understandable and expected given the issue about abuse I mentioned earlier. I mean, look at me, I am literally at my third trial at NPP, even though by the end of my second (which was a two-month thing) trial I was already doing great at NPP. I am currently on a 4-month trial which started since May 2024. I didn't mind or complained because to an extent I understood why and wasn't bothered because, after all, it is a chance to show what I am capable of.
- It is only quite unfortunate that the requests became disruptive that you had to be blocked from the PERM pages. Please calm down, you are doing great, I envy and respect your contributions and I don't want you to get tired of contributing on here. Vanderwaalforces (talk) 16:31, 7 June 2024 (UTC)

Curious about your changes to Darío Benedetto
Hello, I was curious as to why the page I referenced above receives suppression for vandalism. Checking the deletion log, this seems to have been happening a lot recently. Why did you make the choice to suppress those edits (out of curiosity). I also apologize for my incorrect revert, which caused more work for you. Thanks, OnlyNano 17:57, 14 June 2024 (UTC)
- @OnlyNano I revision deleted the vandalism because it was purely disruptive material by a clear LTA. Not much to look at there, some other admins did the same with that form of vandalism. And no worries about that revert, I make a lone mistake every now and then while patrolling too :) The Night Watch (talk) 18:03, 14 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for your understanding! I noticed the page change the second I reverted it, and I went through a wormhole of confusion and worry haha. Thanks for explaining more about your decision, I never knew that some forms of vandalism yielded that! Have a good one :) OnlyNano 18:11, 14 June 2024 (UTC)

The third round of the 2024 WikiCup ended on 28 June. As with Round 2, this round was competitive: each of the 16 contestants who advanced to Round 4 scored at least 256 points.
The following editors all scored more than 400 points in Round 3:
- Generalissima (submissions) with 1,059 points, mostly from 1 featured article on DeLancey W. Gill, 11 good articles, 18 did you know nominations, and dozens of reviews;
- Skyshifter (submissions) with 673 points, mostly from 2 featured articles on Worlds (Porter Robinson album) and I'm God, 5 good articles, and 2 did you know nominations;

Question from Mysticrain19 (06:26, 12 July 2024)
Hello! I was wondering if I can take a screen of apple maps satellite view of a park and label things such as beach, camping loops, boat launch and then upload it to the parks wikipedia page? Are these considered copyrighted or are they free use to upload? --Mysticrain19 (talk) 06:26, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Mysticrain19 I'm not quite sure about using apple maps satellite views for images in articles, but it seems like according to the terms of use for Apple Maps, that the service is copyrighted [1] and wouldn't be free content to upload images of. I think you might be able to get a better answer at The Teahouse as I'm not a very good person to give information on copyright statuses of maps. The Night Watch (talk) 15:21, 13 July 2024 (UTC)
Further Statement
Whew, this is going to be a big statement. Some of you may have been watching my behavior over the last few months, that I've not been as active and calm as I usually am. There are a lot of emotions running through my head, and after a long while of dealing with mental health problems, I've concluded that I'm not the best fit to be an admin at this point in time. I wouldn't say never, but I think there are a lot of things holding me back, chief among them, uh, me.
There are numerous problems that I hope to someday resolve, mostly surrounding my temperament, discussion-perspective, and maturity issues. I don't have very good skills at de-escalating disputes and being a conflict-averse person, it's hard to learn those skills at a young age. And I'd rather resolve them beforehand than end up doing a shoddy job.
The event that inspired this was a controversy surrounding tone policing that I poorly handled some months back, and after some long-term deliberation, I feel like I need time to learn so I'd say this is a NOTQUITEYET situation for me. I'm going to take the step of not resysopping and maybe running for a reconfirmation in 2-5 years. But hey, this might be a relief to a lot of you, and it is for me. And I feel like I'm better off several months later now that I have lots of wikifriends who I enjoy talking with via email and Discord. This also gives me a lot of time to focus on collaborating on content with others, expanding my work to new areas, and focusing on improving my interpersonal skills. Thanks for your support and insight, The Night Watch (talk) 23:12, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
- I just want to say that I think you're better at these things than you give yourself credit for. I know you know I think that, but I'm willing to say it publicly. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 16:06, 13 July 2024 (UTC)
- Clover, I know my flaws. I'm incredibly skittish and passionate in high-pressure situations, and I'm not as calm and collegial as I wish I could be. People change, but I feel like this is not my time. Maybe in a few years, but I know what it feels like to be judged and rejected by a close community and deal with the emotional aftermath. So this is a NOTQUITEYET, and maybe some people would change their minds eventually, though I don't know. But hey, the world is your oyster. Don't let silly me drag you down. You can lean into any role you want, and you should care about the community as a whole, not about what happens to a few conflicted people. I'm still around, and I'll still give to the project in some little ways. The Night Watch (talk) 16:20, 13 July 2024 (UTC)
- I don't think you're silly. I genuinely mean this. I see a lot of myself in you which is probably why I care so much. I often feel like I have the same flaws. As I said before, try to give yourself the grace you give others. That said, Wikipedia is not an obligation and you're free to participate in whichever way you think is best. I'm not going to try and force you to do something you don't want and I know you've thought a lot about this lately. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 16:26, 13 July 2024 (UTC)
- We have a few things different. You're incredibly extroverted while I'm the exact opposite, incredibly shy. That's part of why my interactions with others are difficult and emotional sometimes. My dad was like that at one point actually. You've had more experience standing your ground while I prefer to stay out of most community discussions. Overall, learning how to work and communicate appropriately with others is a gradual process and one that I'm not quite suited for at the moment. That's how you can think about yourself: adminship is not just about skill, but learning how to work well with people of all backgrounds. You're skilled at that y'know, but not everyone has the same proficiencies. They take time to learn. The Night Watch (talk) 19:26, 15 July 2024 (UTC)
- It's true I'm not shy. But standing my ground is not easy for me. I used to have immense inner turmoil whenever I'd disagree with anyone on anything and I still have to fight those feelings of inner worthlessness quite often. It's true that things take time to learn but I do genuinely think you're better at it than you give yourself credit for. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 19:50, 15 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hey, I'm making my own little commitment to do better, and maybe someone will notice that 2-5 years down the line, but that's fine if not. Not everyone has to like me, and I have gotten involved in my own share of self-inflicted drama. Time doesn't heal all wounds. But you have the community at your back, and my support. I meant what I said here. You're incredibly kind, caring, and empathetic, and I wish I was a little more like that. Wikipedia can be a heavy place sometimes, and you might lose a lot of friends. That hurts, I know firsthand how some Wikipedia-nastiness can affect a close friend in real life. But hey, I'm here for you and the project. I just need a little time. - I understand that you need time. As I said, I wouldn't ever want to force someone to do something they don't want to do. I just wish you would stop tormenting yourself in the meantime because I know what that feels like and it sucks. We can be our own harshest critics sometimes. I often feel like I don't live up to other people's expectations. Just know that I'm here for you and that sometimes the loudest voices drown out the compassionate ones but that doesn't mean they don't exist. You belong here and you can choose what you want your future to look like. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 01:54, 16 July 2024 (UTC)
If it makes you feel better, I declined an offer for adminship in late 2021 for the same reasons. I knew I'd freak out the moment I got taken to WP:ANI for the first time.
- I would love to discuss our struggles with you on Discord a bit more, if you'd like. Scorpions1325 (talk) 13:54, 14 July 2024 (UTC)

Thank you for improving article quality in July! - Today's story is about a photographer who took iconic pictures, especially View from Williamsburg, Brooklyn, on Manhattan, 9/11, yesterday's was a great mezzo, and on Thursday we watched a sublime ballerina. Question from TechnogodCEO (13:16, 24 July 2024)
hello, I was wondering how I would go about creating a new page on Wikipedia
Thank you, TechnogodCEO --TechnogodCEO (talk) 13:16, 24 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @TechnogodCEO creating a new article on Wikipedia is a tricky process, and the general instructions are located over at this page. Usually most contributors spend time working on existing pages to get used to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for article construction. But in brief, for your article to be included on Wikipedia, it's subject needs to be discussed and cited to reliable sources such as reputable newspapers or books. These sources must cover the subject in detail and be non-affiliated to the subject directly. I'm here if you have any further questions or if you want a concept clarified. Happy editing, The Night Watch (talk) 15:11, 24 July 2024 (UTC)

Question from FDFbasket (23:00, 24 July 2024)
Hello. How do I add some missing info to the Professional career category? I tried to edit and received an error message --FDFbasket (talk) 23:00, 24 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @FDFbasket, sorry for the late response. I'm assuming that the error message was probably from you accidentally tripping the edit filter while trying to add information to the Professional career section for David DiLeo. I saw the information was eventually added by you, but was removed as unsourced information by another user. Wikipedia needs information that is added to be cited to reliable sources. Citations include materials such as reputable newspapers, books, or other media. Without citations, the content in articles can't be considered verifiable and might be removed. If you'd like to re-add the material, I suggest finding a citation to verify those statements you added. A page here has some basic instructions for helping cite sources. Any further questions or needed clarifications? Feel free to reach out here. The Night Watch (talk) 16:44, 25 July 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for your response. I am new to this process and totally confused. I don't know how to proceed from here. Could you give me a step by step guide to add the edit and the reference. The reference for my edit is the web page as follows: https://basketball.realgm.com/player/David-DiLeo/Summary/107316
- Thanks for your help. FDFbasket (talk) 17:34, 25 July 2024 (UTC)
- @FDFbasket If you are using the source editor, there are some instructions here to use the RefToolbar feature while in the editing window to insert the website source with the {{cite web}} template. So you insert the sentence of information you wish to add and then use the RefToolbar to cite the source immediately after the information, then publish your edit. One question, do you think this this website a reliable source? The Night Watch (talk) 16:30, 27 July 2024 (UTC)

- @Boneless Pizza! I'll try to review soon, though I'm taking things slower this week so it might take a little while. The Night Watch (talk) 16:03, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Boneless Pizza! So sorry for the long delay. I've slowed things down a large amount to try and get my anxiety under control. I don't want to overcommit, but this is on my to-do list and I'll get back to you. Again, so sorry for the wait. The Night Watch (talk) 18:22, 17 August 2024 (UTC)

Question from Fighterace2 (15:47, 10 August 2024)
Hello. I am director of the American Fighter Aces Association. The page on "Elmer W. Harris" as a Fighter is completely false and has no references that are factual. Harris has three confirmed aerial victories. We are the world's authority on this topic, along with the USAF, Navy, and USMC. Help remove this page completely as it is likely a family member or friend of this man. Regards. Gregg --Fighterace2 (talk) 15:47, 10 August 2024 (UTC)

Thank you for improving article quality in August! - Today's story is about a stage director, - watch Aida, so tender so cruel. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:04, 20 August 2024 (UTC)
Whatever the reason for the rename, I think of you! I remember Stabat Mater today, you can watch a five-year old concert that I heard, music of sadness and consolation. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:26, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- I was thinking of this for a couple months. Never 100% satisfied with my two old usernames, and I'm not sure I'm 100% satisfied with my new one either. But I felt like I might as well try something new. Make a pseudo-fresh start I guess? Mostly because It hasn't been the best year so far. I really do try to work through things, but sometimes it feels like I'm grasping at straws. I haven’t written anything for almost three months, and I was also unable to comment on a recent FAC that I signed up for.
- It might just be recent life stress from moving, but I also struggle with new anxiety that ping-pongs from being nonexistent to being strong enough that I just want to sleep away everything. It's something I'm learning to deal with. But yeah, I do try to find what works for me even if it’s difficult. I'm arranging to go to a meetup soon since I think that might help make me feel better in a way. Seeing someone face-to-face is really a novel thing. There's always a chance that I don’t end up going, or just awkwardly stand in a corner most of the time. But trying something is better than nothing, right? Voting for coordinators is now open!
Nominations for the upcoming project coordinator election have opened. A team of up to ten coordinators will be elected for the next coordination year. The project coordinators are the designated points of contact for issues concerning the project, and are responsible for maintaining our internal structure and processes. They do not, however, have any authority over article content or editor conduct, or any other special powers. More information on being a coordinator is available here. If you are interested in running, please sign up here by 23:59 UTC on 14 September! Voting will commence on 15 September. If you have any questions, you can contact any member of the current coord team. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 06:42, 1 September 2024 (UTC)
September music

Today's story has 3 composers, I couldn't decide for the one on the Main page or the one who didn't make it on his bicentenary, so took both, and the pic has a third. Listen if you have a bit of time. The music, played by the Kyiv Symphony Orchestra in Germany in April 2022, impressed me. - Thank you for explaining above, and "trying something new" sounds good. Please update the QAI project page. The name made me think of the composition Bells of Beyond. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:52, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
First time wanting to edit!
Hey there. I have been on Wikipedia for a long time. I love reading random articles about pretty much anything. I'd love to start editing and improving the site while also giving me something to do.
