— Crisco 1492 (talk) 05:23, 19 September 2013 (UTC)
Kalau anda belum tertarik, mengapa anda menulis artikel ? (film)? Hanamanteo (talk) 09:28, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

Adam Kadmon

Hello, I have seen that you have closed the discussion Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Adam_Kadmon_(character). Can I kindly ask you to reconsider this decision? Please take a look at the AfD discussion. As you can see there is no explanation about what's wrong (if anything) with the article and which points of WP:GNG and WP:BIO are not met. Furthermore I can say that this discussion does not meet the AfD criteria for mainly 2 reasons:

  1. Few people say it's not notable without giving any arguments. According to the AfD rules, arguments must be provided. In WP:ATA there is written to avoid this kind of "argumentations";
  2. 1 person wrote that this article must be deleted immediately. - In this case also there is no argumentation at all. Nor any linkage with the Wikipedia policies.

In addition I would like to add that no consensus at all has been reached. And I would like to enphasize az well the difference between consensus and voting. With this I kindly ask you to reconsider and reopen the discussion because no consensus was met. Thank you for understanding. Thanks --★ Pikks ★ MsG 10:18, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

  • Or, perhaps, you could actually read what people have written in their comments. The Kadmon article was written as if it were a Wikia entry and, per WP:TNT, could be deleted and rewritten from scratch. I can userfy the content for you if you want to expand it, but I should note that 1) "promotional" is certainly a valid criteria for deletion, as is non-notable and 2) your own !vote was based on an "it's notable" argument; I don't see you putting forth a single reference, nor an other evidence that the topic is notable. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:10, 19 September 2013 (UTC)
Hi, thanks for your reply. Let me please assess the points you mentioned.

Promotional: you wrote to "read what people have written in their comments". Right. People wrote it at the very beginning. Please read the dates of those comments and check the edit history of the article. After those comments I have spent hours in editing the article according to WP:NPOV. So that all the non neutral tone was removed. As you can see from my comment on August 25 the article had been edited. To be sincere the article had a lot of edits since it was sent to AfD. As I can see from your note above, you just read the comments, but not the article itself.
If you still believe that there is some promotional tone somewhere, please say where, and it can be edited. According to the policies 'Disputes over page content are usually not dealt with by deleting the page, except in severe cases.' and 'Pages that are exclusively promotional, and would need to be fundamentally rewritten to become encyclopedic.' can be deleted, for minor non neutral points there are other kind of resolutions, such as {{npov}} templates. In my opinion there is no more biased text, and if you think that there is still something it is for sure some very little piece or bad-chosen word, for sure it's not a exclusively promotional article, thus a deletion would be a bad choice.

non-notable: there are reliable sources that are verifiable, and there are as well primary sources, which are confirmed by secondary and tertiary sources which are completely independent from the subject. This literatures includes not only websites, but also national and international newspapers, as well as books. Since according to the rules a person is presumed to be notable if he or she has been the subject of multiple published secondary sources which are reliable, intellectually independent of each other, and independent of the subject, the person is notable. This article not only meets the basic criteria for notability of living people WP:BASIC, but it also meets WP:CREATIVE and WP:ENT. To summarize, the article just needs some copy editing for English language and it may need to be shortened. For sure not WP:TNT. It was already listed in the Guild of Copy Editors and its turn was very near. Please suggest how we can go further. I would appreciate if you could do something for it. Thank you --★ Pikks ★ MsG 13:42, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

  • Both would have been very good arguments to include in the deletion discussion, where they could have been seen by everyone. Note that most of the time admins closing a discussion will only read the discussion, and thus arguments not written in the discussion (or changes not noted there) will not be taken into consideration. A simple mention like "Article edited" is not nearly non-ambiguous enough to make a decision based on. You have convinced me to undelete and nominate again at AFD; please ensure that your arguments are included there. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:55, 19 September 2013 (UTC)
    • You may participate at the new AFD here. I note that the issues of self-published sources and the article being written in an in-universe perspective (blurring fact and fiction) are still present. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 14:01, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

Your concerns have been resolved there! Zia Khan 18:02, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

Hi, I had a few concerns about this AFD discussion, and I think I would have preferred to see them addressed in more detail before a decision was made regarding the page's deletion. Before I take it to deletion review, I'd like to know whether you considered my concerns and looked into them before making the decision to close it as delete. Mabalu (talk) 13:03, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

  • Hi Mabalu. Re: your deletion/redirect/merge argument, I read that and considered that a redirect could be created after the discussion. If you want to have content to merge I can provide it to you, no issues there. Re: your concerns about possible socking, I read that and noticed it. The reason I closed as delete afterwards was because I saw the !vote from BabbaQ, whom I've seen active in other areas of the project (and is fairly active) and thus I assumed is an unrelated account. I do not have check-user, and would not have used it in this instance, so I would have been unable to confirm your suspicions nor prove them false. The possibility of socking is concerning, but I believe the consensus was acceptably clear. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:17, 19 September 2013 (UTC)
I would appreciate having some content to merge, if possible. I do feel the nomination was bizarrely random (with no connection whatsoever to any of the nominator's other activity or edits that I could see) regardless of whether or not it deserved nomination. To be honest, I think it DID deserve discussion and probably deletion, although I would have liked to see a bit more discussion beforehand. My feeling is that it should have been made into a redirect in order to preserve the history of the page (which had been around quite a while) as I didn't think it was QUITE that offensively promotional. But yeah, I'm not really that bothered about the article, I just kinda feel the AFD was just slightly under-discussed. So do let me have the material to merge and I'll pop some into his missus's article. Thanks. Mabalu (talk) 14:11, 19 September 2013 (UTC)
I mean, if you want to I would be open to re-evaluate the articles notability if the article was improved some. Talkback me if the article is recreated. Thanks--BabbaQ (talk) 17:49, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

General question

Crisco, I have a general question - how to lookup text of the old article that was deleted from Wiki? I am an experienced editor, but I do not know that trick. I noticed that you were able to restore Valeria Lukyanova old deleted article here: https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/User:Crisco_1492/Valeria_Lukyanova How did you find that old text? Just Curious. Btw, thanks for restoring Valeria Lukyanova page, I tried to do it myself before, but User:Hammersoft was keep doing speedy deletions :( Innab (talk) 17:32, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

  • If I may, I can answer for Crisco; he can do that because he is an administrator and see deleted versions of the article. As to my speedy deletions, since I am not an administrator I made no speedy deletions; i can't make any as I don't have the rights to do so. I can tag an article for speedy deletion, which carries every bit as much weight as the next editor's opinion. I'm sorry you disagree, but our disagreeing doesn't make me right or wrong or you wrong or right. It just is. --Hammersoft (talk) 18:30, 19 September 2013 (UTC)
    • Pretty much per Hammer. Only admins can see and recreate deleted content, unless it has been suppressed, in which case not even admins can see it. Also agree with the important note on wording: Hammer's tagged it, but the actual deletion must be done by an admin. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 22:32, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

A user, @Johnjgillis: seems to disagree with your closure of this discussion to the extent that he has sought to edit the closed discussion several times now, to the extent that he is on his level 4 final warning for doing so. I perceive that he is acting in good faith but that his passion for the article is causing him to miss working within the rules. I was wondering if you might engage him in conversation about the deletion discussion and closure, please? Fiddle Faddle 15:23, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

Hi Crisco, I apologize for my newbie behavior. I believe you deleted the aforementioned page too quickly. Given the current state of the supporting cites offered, however, I understand your decision. However, I have additional cites that provide much more authority and credence to the claims of Alfred's regional importance as a law professor and humanitarian within the Sicilan-American community. I welcome the opportunity to provide this new information.Johnjgillis (talk) 15:35, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

  • Hi John. The issue with the article is that the references are all self-published or by the subject, which we cannot use to determine notability. Articles require reliable, independent sources which give in-depth coverage of the subject to show that they are notable enough for inclusion, and (as a rule) the subject's own website and Facebook are not up to snuff. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 22:38, 19 September 2013 (UTC)
  • I understand and concur. I will be providing new secondary sources that should address any notability concerns. Tell me, is it better to try to revive the deleted page, or create a new one with the improved sources? For the former, where do I post the updates?Johnjgillis (talk) 17:25, 20 September 2013 (UTC)

Abbotsbury POTD

The village is known for its swannery, subtropical gardens and historic buildings. That's what sources reinforce. I fail to see how that "sounds like a tourist ad". How is it justifiable to summarise the village without mentioning those features? I don't live there you know - I haven't even been there for 19 years - so I'm not trying to flog the place. But have it your way. PaleCloudedWhite (talk) 13:51, 21 September 2013 (UTC)

  • The MP audience is considerably finicky. Did you ever read about Gibraltarpedia? A lot of those DYK hooks were even less like advertisements, but that never stopped the arguments over them. Having information about locations that may be visited by tourists on the main may cause similar arguments, though the content is fine in the article proper. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:55, 21 September 2013 (UTC)
Well, it seems daft to me, rather like having an image of Heidelberg and describing it just as "a city in south-west Germany" and not mentioning the castle or university. There's something ironic in seeking out the most striking, beautiful images for POTD, but then using accompanying text which deliberately downplays the location, just in case some of our readers are inspired to further their education by going and visiting the place. (This isn't a rant aimed at you personally - I appreciate you're just anticipating trouble. Rather it's a general rant.) PaleCloudedWhite (talk) 15:16, 21 September 2013 (UTC)
  • Understood. Generally I focus on the town itself (history, for instance) rather than things which may be considered tourist attractions. Admittedly history is its own draw, but that's generally not as controversial. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 15:23, 21 September 2013 (UTC)

Recent deletion of the D-Cubed page - request for a review of notability of the sources

Hi Crisco 1492,

I have a connection to a page that was deleted recently, the relevant discussion being here:

https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/D-Cubed

Having read some of the guidelines, I have some queries about why some of the supplied sources were not acceptable. With your broad Wikipedia experience, would you mind helping me out with my questions?

One of the contributors, Stuartyeates regarded this source as acceptable, so perhaps that’s a starting point for notability:

http://computingengineering.asmedigitalcollection.asme.org/article.aspx?articleid=1399189

The author, Professor Hoffman, is a respected academic at a respected institution writing in a respected journal:

http://www.cs.purdue.edu/people/faculty/cmh/

http://computingengineering.asmedigitalcollection.asme.org/journal.aspx

The next source is this one:

http://dl.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=112573&dl=GUIDE

The author is connected with the subject, but as I understand the guidelines if the source is reliable and is quoted without original research, it is a valid source.

The article is seminal in this field. It has been cited 55 times. It has a fee associated with it, not uncommon for academic journals, yet it has been downloaded 654 times, including in recent weeks, indicative of current widespread credibility in the academic community of an article published in 1991. The journal is peer reviewed, and highly reputable. To quote Wikipedia:

http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Association_for_Computing_Machinery

“The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) is a U.S.-based international learned society for computing. It was founded in 1947 and is the world's largest and most prestigious[1] scientific and educational computing society.”

The final of the more substantive sources is this one:

http://www.ams.org/journals/tran/2007-359-05/S0002-9947-06-04049-9/S0002-9947-06-04049-9.pdf

One of the authors is the same as in the previous article, hence he is connected with the subject. However, the second author, Professor Power, is a respected academic at a respected institution that has no direct connection to the subject yet has contributed a large amount of time to a highly significant deeply academic paper related to the subject. Does this second author give this source some of the characteristics of a secondary source, which in itself is arguably very notable?

http://www.lancaster.ac.uk/fas/maths/people/stephen-power

The journal, the Transactions of the American Mathematical Society, is peer reviewed and highly reputable. It is given an A* ranking by the Australian Mathematical Society:

http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/List_of_mathematics_journals

It’s sister journal, the Journal of the American Mathematical Society, is reported to have the eighth highest impact ranking of mathematical journals on the above page.

Together with the numerous less significant D-Cubed sources, I feel the subject is more notable than many other comparable pages on Wikipedia. If after reviewing the above you thought there was potential merit, I would be delighted to draft a new version of the D-Cubed page making careful use of the above and other sources for your review.

Best regards, MingleLane — Preceding unsigned comment added by MingleLane (talkcontribs) 16:48, 16 September 2013 (UTC)

  • Hi Mingle, I trust you've read WP:GNG (and WP:NSOFT, though it is not policy)? None of the sources you list here seem to discuss the software in detail, but either the coder/creator or organisation backing it. Per WP:GNG, this cannot be considered enough evidence of notability. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:18, 16 September 2013 (UTC)

Hi Crisco 1492,

Firstly, I apologise if I have messed anything up on your talk page. I tried to add some formatting to my original version of the message below and got into a bit of a tangle (my posts to your page are my first on Wikipedia). I cannot yet work out how to use the indented bullets that are the convention for responses on your page.

Thanks for your feedback. I had read WP:GNG, and now I have read WP:NSOFT.

The following source is only concerned with the D-Cubed software:

http://computingengineering.asmedigitalcollection.asme.org/article.aspx?articleid=1399189

May I ask, in what way is it lacking in detail?

This source:

http://dl.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=112573&dl=GUIDE

... is solely concerned with key aspects of the algorithms of the D-Cubed software. I realise that it is not accessible without payment (I could perhaps email a copy to you if you would like), but I understand that this is not a bar to being an acceptable source. I realise that it is largely primary, but it is in a respected peer reviewed publication, and has been validated by numerous citations and downloads. I would only use consistently with Wikipedia policy on primary sources.

This source:

http://dl.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=112573&dl=GUIDE

... is solely concerned with a proof (an extraordinary piece of mathematical work as is evident from the prestigious journal) of key aspects of key algorithms of the D-Cubed software, as indicated by numerous cross references to the previous source.

If feel the following source may also be notable when taken in conjunction with the other sources:

By way of background, the D-Cubed software is part of the history of computer science in the field of geometry and user interfaces, stemming from the amazing work of Ivan Sutherland below:

https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Sketchpad

It is used in most computer-aided design (CAD) systems, hence has a role in the design of many modern manufactured items (cars, planes, consumer goods...).

I believe the notable place of the D-Cubed software in the history of computer science and modern CAD systems can be established via the above sources when supplemented with the numerous less substantial sources that are available.

Thanks again for your consideration.

Best regards, MingleLane

Another general question

Crisco, thank you for answer to my question above. I have another general question, may be you can help me to answer it: If I think that an admin interpreted Wiki rule wrong, it there any way I can take his interpretation of the rule for discussion with other admins on some discussion board? I.e. is there any discussion board where I can ask admins for an interpretation of the Wiki rule?

In this one case, I have an admin that says that WP:GNG is not enough to keen an article, and WP:BIO is always required for a person. I think he is wrong and want to discuss it with other admins. Innab (talk) 16:57, 22 September 2013 (UTC)

  • If the article has been deleted through AFD, you can go to WP:DRV and open it up for further discussion. Or you can try talking to the admin in question and arguing your point (I note, however, that the GNG provides only the presumption of notability, and does not guarantee it). Other processes have their own pages too. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 22:27, 22 September 2013 (UTC)
Thanks! This helps. :) Innab (talk) 22:33, 22 September 2013 (UTC)

YL Ventures

Hey Crisco 1492, I have seen that you closed the discussion Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/YL Ventures and I would like to add more info that might change the outcome of that discussion, which was deletion of the article. The global notability of YL Ventures is arguable, although in my humble opinion appearances in such publications as TechCrunch, The Next Web and VentureBeat might indicate that. After all, these are the leading news resources for the global high-tech and venture capital industry. However, I believe that there is no doubt that YL Ventures is a very notable VC firm in the Israeli high-tech industry (also known as Silicon Wadi). There are significant mentions of the fund's activity and interviews with the fund's partners in TheMarker, Globes and Calcalist, which are Israel's biggest financial news resources. In addition, there is a lengthy interview in Geektime.co.il, a leading Israeli high-tech news website. I can add these references if that helps. All of this material is in Hebrew, but it clearly shows that YL Ventures, a US-based fund, has a strong status in the Israeli high-tech industry. ThomasEq (talk) 10:43, 23 September 2013 (UTC)

Is there anything you can do about this?

Template:Did you know nominations/Footpaths of Gibraltar is still being held up, nearly 2 months after I submitted it. It's gone through 3 reviews, it's been approved for DYK, and it's survived an AfD and a merge discussion by a large majority. If we can just get it in a queue and out of the way, that will bring this idiotic saga to an end. Prioryman (talk) 20:27, 23 September 2013 (UTC)

Rather surprised that you took this to FAC so suddenly. I was going to see if I could try to improve it further. I've long thought it FA material of course but I had a feeling that something might have been overlooked and it might be possible to find some further material. The problem of course is that finding scraps in google books is only likely to amount to sporadic bits of info anyway so maybe it's fine. • Proposal (risking collision here): that "Arise, Awake" be made the lead hook in P2 (moving from P1, where I placed it and would run from 3:45am to noon local time) so it runs noon to 8:15pm local time; in P4, it runs a day late on the 28th. Sounds good? I'll find another hook for P1. BlueMoonset (talk) 01:13, 26 September 2013 (UTC)
  • Goodness, this is embarrassing: in the Josephine MacLeod hook, could you please add a comma after "Swami Vivekananda"? It's clearly missing one. (The embarrassing part is that I missed it when restoring approval to the hook.) BlueMoonset (talk) 01:20, 26 September 2013 (UTC)
  • Tito, I gave the times correctly: P2 will be promoted to Q6, but the queues are running every 8 hours and 15 minutes to get back to running one queue a day at midnight GMT. (Right now, we're an hour and 15 minutes off.) So Q6 will be promoted at 12:00 on 27 September, assuming that nothing goes wrong with the bot and preps are promoted on time. Crisco, since it's been half an hour since I first posted here, and it's not a good idea to have "Arise, Awake" in two separate prep areas, I'm going to clean up as I proposed above. BlueMoonset (talk) 01:38, 26 September 2013 (UTC)
  • Tito, as long as we have you here, what are you planning on doing with the rest of the hooks. There are three more in the "Late September (Swami Vivekananda 150th anniversary)" section, but they aren't scheduled for any particular date. At this point, they either need to be scheduled to a specific date (there are only three days left), or moved back into the main section. Any other hooks should probably be left in the main section for normal promotion once they are approved. Sound good? BlueMoonset (talk) 01:56, 26 September 2013 (UTC)
  • No planning, I was thinking to wait for 27 Sept and then change the header to "Any day after 6 Oct". But, the 3 hooks which were kept reserved for the DYK month, I don't want to run those in September and that's why requested a 10 days gap (27 Sept+10 days= 6 Oct). TitoDutta 02:09, 26 September 2013 (UTC)
  • Tito, it's a bit odd to have what amounts to an anti-special occasion: hold until enough time has lapsed. I'll let Crisco weigh in on this, but my opinion is that it's not a proper use of the special occasion hold if there isn't a special day or event in a six week period to hold them for. BlueMoonset (talk) 02:22, 26 September 2013 (UTC)
Important

@BlueMoonset, Crisco 1492, and Nvvchar: An editor added a Fanpov template in Joesphine MacLeod. I have reverted their edit. Most probably they will revert my edit or post at talk. If you think the hook needs to be removed from queue, please replace it with immediate next best hook. We have multiple hooks ready at this moment. TitoDutta 04:09, 26 September 2013 (UTC)

  • Nikkimaria is a respected DYK admin, so if she ends up removing the article from Q4, there won't be any choice in the matter. (Also, if the argument is that the article is not neutral, then it wouldn't qualify for DYK until edited accordingly, as neutrality is one of the requirements.) We'll need another admin, hopefully Crisco here, to do a direct promotion into Q4 of one of the three articles still in the special holding area. BlueMoonset (talk) 04:33, 26 September 2013 (UTC)
  • (edit conflict) Okay, pinging @Nikkimaria: too. Yes, promote the next best hook from the reserved DYKs. Thankfully we have few. Yes, BlueMoonset, be an admin, We often debate and fight, but, no doubt you'll be a great admin. I'll post a detailed RFA proposal at your talk page when I'll get some time. TitoDutta 04:39, 26 September 2013 (UTC) added missing word "proposal" TitoDutta 04:53, 26 September 2013 (UTC)
  • Okay, back from work. Let me summarise: Queue 4 has MacLeod, still, and has been neutralised a bit more. Arise, awake, and stop not till the goal is reached is in prep 2, scheduled for Q6. I edit conflicted Blue accidentally (didn't see the notice, BTW) and prep 1 has an empty hole in it. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 06:51, 26 September 2013 (UTC)
  • I have been waiting for last 10 hours to fix this issue and need to go out at this moment. I am removing the template. If a) you see more issues, i) ignore if it is a minor one or post at talk, I'll fix ASAP, b) if the issue is critical and the hook needs to be pulled down, please replace it with the immediate next best hook TitoDutta 12:52, 26 September 2013 (UTC)

DYK for Mega Mendoeng

The DYK project (nominate) 23:29, 26 September 2013 (UTC)

Maybe you'd know?

Crisco, Sasata came to my talk page (User talk:BlueMoonset#Opinion requested) and asked about the hook, which has no specific sourcing for the plot elements of the hook. It just barely skirts the requirement that the hook have a real-world connection by giving the name of the director, being about a work of fiction, so I'm a bit dubious about it anyway, but it's also not a great hook, effectively saying "did you know that the plot of X is Y"? Anyway, I realized that I didn't know whether plot elements were free from sourcing requirements even if they are used in the hook—such facts have extraordinary inline sourcing requirements—so I thought I'd ask you, with your greater experience here at DYK. If you could post your understanding on the nomination template, I'm sure we'd both appreciate it. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 00:34, 27 September 2013 (UTC)

  • Many thanks, Crisco. Good to know. I was surprised regarding the Pokeritis hook, but it's good to know that my standards are stricter than they ought regarding fictional hooks, and I need to loosen up. It seems too easy, somehow, to tack on the year of publication or the name of a film's director. Ah well. A good reminder to get on my 30-month anniversary here. BlueMoonset (talk) 04:27, 27 September 2013 (UTC)

The Signpost: 25 September 2013

Crisco, could you please take a look at this and give it a tick if you think it appropriate? Even though my ALT1 is basically a cut-down version of the original hook, I'd like to have someone independent make the decision to approve or not. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 17:42, 27 September 2013 (UTC)

Deletion of Texpatriate

You came to the conclusion that Texpatriate had reached a delete consensus. However, it is my understand that when a deletion review is relisted, one should disregard the comments made beforehand. There were ZERO comments since the second relist. Accordingly, I believe that a no-consensus is the only appropriate conclusion. Houstonbuildings (talk) 20:17, 27 September 2013 (UTC)

  • "it is my understand that when a deletion review is relisted, one should disregard the comments made beforehand." Your understanding is wrong; a relisting is to gather more discussion, but it does not invalidate previous discussion. Where did you get such an idea? — Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:39, 28 September 2013 (UTC)

Hi, I had previously merged some content from Hibriten High School Band to Hibriten High School so closing this AFD as delete presents GFDL issues. A couple of solutions present themselves. One would be to re-close as a redirect, protecting it if thought appropriate. The other method would be to restore the content and move it to Talk:Hibriten High School/Hibriten High School Band and add a link to it from Talk:Hibriten High School. DYK needs a queue within three hours

Crisco, the queues are empty. I've just loaded another prep (this makes six in a row), so there are two available to be promoted. We need one in three hours, and a second in eleven. With luck, some other folks will show up during the weekend to load preps, though I'll keep an eye on things in case they don't. BlueMoonset (talk) 04:52, 28 September 2013 (UTC)

  • I think people just don't want to read piles and piles of discussion. Mind you, there are some completely untouched noms from August... probably fairly easy reviews too. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 15:45, 28 September 2013 (UTC)
  • And, of course, no sooner do I type the above but DoctorKubla takes on two of the oldest reviews, and approves the oldest one from July 5! There are probably twenty from August that are untouched or just had some hook jiggering. Even Template:Did you know nominations/Telepharmacy from July just needs someone to see whether the "US-centric" issue has been dealt with: Orlady dove in, but it means she can't review it now, and I've always been bad about judging such centricity. BlueMoonset (talk) 15:52, 28 September 2013 (UTC)
  • Many thanks. The outcome may not be what we were hoping for, as you saw. Depending on what Bryan decides, I may ask Orlady if she wants to take it on. And as long as I have you here...we have three preps waiting. The second is yours, so I imagine you want someone else to promote it, but the first certainly could be promoted, and it would be nice to have one queue filled, at least. And while I'm pushing my luck, I'll squeak my wheel again about Information Technology in Bangladesh again... I appreciate your patience! BlueMoonset (talk) 01:44, 29 September 2013 (UTC)

I'm in the absolute wrong mood to rule on whether a day plus 20 minute delay in nominating this should be allowed or not. The article's author appears to be a single-day editor who hasn't returned in over a month, and I can't decide whether Penwatchdog's nomination—as the author's mentor, and as the person who did do article cleanup a couple of weeks later—should be given an exception. One way or another, I think the decision should be made soon, for Penwatchdog's sake if for nothing else. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 14:32, 29 September 2013 (UTC)

Question about AFC entries

Hi. I'm having a problem with the two Rhode Island International Horror Film Festival articles at AFC. I added more sources to the articles a few weeks ago but another editor just rejected both articles and was kind of rude about it. 72.74.216.193 (talk) 02:18, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

  • Have replied. I note, however, that I would still not be comfortable with the article going live just yet. Coverage from a newspaper outside of Rhode Island would go a long way to making other editors see the notability of the topic. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 02:33, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

Thanks, I appreciate it. The selections page has six articles from The Providence Journal. I'll try to find some more for the award winners page. 72.74.216.193 (talk) 02:55, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

I was talking about the comment he made in the history ("An IP knows better than a Editor... NO"). 72.74.216.193 (talk) 02:55, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

The editor keeps rejecting the article (claiming I'm being "willfully disruptive" ) even though I've been adding sources. I guess I can leave a message at ANI. Does it matter if I don't have a Wikipedia account? 72.74.216.193 (talk) 05:26, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

I didn't mean to start any trouble. I saw most film festival articles (e.g. Sundance Film Festival) were using similar lists and thought it'd make sense to have some for the Rhode Island International Horror Film Festival. Should I just forget about AFC and include both lists into the main article? 72.74.216.193 (talk) 16:14, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

I used List of Sundance Film Festival selections to write the Rhode Island International Horror Film Festival version. I looked at the Cannes Film Festival awards and a few others but the Sundance lists seemed a lot less complicated. What would be the best way to add a shortened list? Should I add just the 2012 selections/winners or just the ones with articles? 72.74.216.193 (talk) 20:26, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

  • The most recent winners would be a good start, I think. You're right, tables are an absolute nightmare, so I just find a format that works on Wikipedia and use that mark-up when I make a new list (however, tables are absolutely not required, and the Sundance list is perfectly valid as is). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:14, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

Orlady has done more work on this, hoping to address the issues you raised. Is it ready now, do you think? Thanks for taking a look, Crisco. BlueMoonset (talk) 02:47, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

Hello dear Crisco. I'm sorry to bother you, but this is getting ridiculous. Since mid-July Gatoclass had been "promising" to review the Template:Did you know nominations/Chechen-Russian conflict and he still hasn't. Instead, he started reviewing new DYKs. I wish these cats were done yet; if only I could get a PDF of their bibliography. I spent the last hour on ILL ordering stuff. I've gone through all the footnotes in Linden's footnotes but I don't expect too much coming out of it. I'll need to go through the bibliographies of all our articles again. Fun! But, and that's the good news, this bibliography will be finite. Drmies (talk) 03:12, 5 October 2013 (UTC)

  • Agree. Doesn't seem to be such a major work that it would draw mounds and mounds of commentary (the Germans translated from us, after all!). I wish I could help you go through the bibliography, but ILL in Indonesia is just a no-no. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 03:17, 5 October 2013 (UTC)

Question re. Fascist headquarters image

You've obviously seen this pic before. I was looking for a way to incorporate it into an article I'm developing w.r.t. Mussolini's regime in Italy, but I notice that neither Wikipedia nor Commons have any available copies. A quick Google search reveals that it formerly existed as File:Fascist Headquarters - 1934.jpg (or so it seems); since it's likely been deleted, I can only assume that its copyright status is dubious. You're active in image licensing issues, so I figured you might be aware of this and could offer some assistance. When, if ever, did the discussion regarding that image's copyright status take place, and where can I find it? Kurtis (talk) 03:54, 5 October 2013 (UTC)

  • Better yet, I believe I've found a free equivalent in use on the Italian Wikipedia. I actually don't think any such images of the Fascist headquarters are copyrighted at this point; you can't just stick a copyright tag on something and say "that's mine", you have to be its creator, or the original publisher. Kurtis (talk) 04:17, 5 October 2013 (UTC)
  • Actually, now that I look into it, I'm not so sure. I'm having a hard time finding the author, and from what I've read, if the person who took this picture hasn't been dead for 70 years, it's still copyrighted. Kurtis (talk) 04:32, 5 October 2013 (UTC)
  • Ah yes, the Lex Luthor-esque headquarters. I think, per Template:PD-Italy, if you can show original publication in Italy from 1975 or before (20 years before the URAA) this would certainly be PD. If the original publication was elsewhere it's a bit dicier. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 06:13, 5 October 2013 (UTC)
  • OK, so the real question in my mind is, does this image constitute a "simple photograph"? It was featured prominently on the streets of Rome back in 1934, so many passers-by with knowledge of how to work a camera could have been compelled to take a picture. Kurtis (talk) 01:28, 6 October 2013 (UTC)
    • I don't see anything artsy about it. Seems to be ambient lighting, very little (if any) post-processing, and the people at the bottom suggests that the photographer didn't have the power to say, clear the street, and did not care if any passers-by were below. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 04:08, 6 October 2013 (UTC)

I just used subpages for each image and randomised their selection on the main template i.e. {{Random subpage|page=Wikipedia:Today's featured article/September 12, 2013|start=1|end=5}} with the rest of the blurb as normal. It sounds as though you'd need 20 subpages for each image, using the main template only for whatever common code/text the POTDs would share. NB if you do this - subpages would only be protected automatically while actually displayed on the main page, which would make the other 19 vulnerable to attack. So what I think you'd have to do is to give each of the subpages full protection and protect all of the images too. I also got a friendly bot operator (Joe Decker) to purge the main page every 15 minutes using Joe's Null Bot (talk · contribs), after a suggestion at the Village Pump. April Fool's Day article idea

You know that I don't do DYK or April Fool's Day items anymore. I have a good idea for an article on Alfred Stanley Johnson, Jr. who was a trick photographer from my general area (Waupun, Wisconsin) circa 1900. He's already mentioned in the tall tale article. He photographed his family and pasted in images of humungous pieces of food! I heard about him yesterday during a television program on the Wisconsin Channel (a digital subchannel of the Public Broadcasting Service). Here's a solid source from the Wisconsin Historical Society: https://www.wisconsinhistory.org/whi/feature/talltales/ . There are MANY great postcard images to be used on the main page that he did which are pre-1923 (so in the public domain in the United States). Looks like a fun article to create! No need to reply, but do it here if inspired to do so. Royalbroil 03:00, 9 October 2013 (UTC)

Sorry for the late reply. I had read your comment on my German user page, but forgotten to answer. Additionally I hadn't noticed that you promoted my map as featured picture. I will read comments more carefully next time... ;-) As to answer your question: like user NNW said in the discussion, it is cartography standard (at least in Germany) that on maps without indication of direction north is the upper side. Perhaps this is handled differently in English speaking countries. If I have to update the map some day, I will consider adding some kind of compass. Thank you for promoting my map - it seems to have been quite successful. -- Thoroe (talk) 17:56, 6 October 2013 (UTC)

  • I'm pretty sure it is standard in many English-speaking countries (I'm Canadian, and that is what I was lead to believe in high school), so I didn't mind either way. It is a fantastic map, and it most certainly deserves featured status on the English Wikipedia as well. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 22:24, 6 October 2013 (UTC)
This'll never be a featured anything--except for in the category "Beer Fan in grocery store in Montgomery, Alabama".
When I was in Rome in May I probably walked about half of the Vatican walls (that is, on the Rome side). I enjoy all the buildings and monuments in Rome that proclaim that they were constructed by various Pontifexes Maximus of former times and it was somewhat startling to see the gate (I guess it must be St. Anna's gate, judging by the location) testifying to the construction of same by Benedictus XVI, Pontifex Maximus. Though there is a new guy in town, didn't see anything by him yet (though I did go to see him celebrate Mass). I guess there will be one or two by him in course of time. After all, Rome wasn't built in a day.--Wehwalt (talk) 16:53, 7 October 2013 (UTC)
Good for you, visiting in the spring. This past summer I was in the Vatican, and I damn near collapsed from exhaustion! Kurtis (talk) 15:06, 8 October 2013 (UTC)
  • LOL. I think Indonesia's got me prepped up if I ever wanted to visit, but my wallet is screaming "no!". I have to say though, I hear the public accommodations are fairly nice in Rome... — Crisco 1492 (talk) 15:34, 8 October 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, if you can handle Indonesia (also a pretty hot and humid place), chances are very good you'll have no trouble in Italy. I live in a more northerly area of Canada, so that's quite an adjustment for me. Rome is amazing. My favourite places in the country were the Colosseum, Assisi, Milan, and San Gimignano.
  • San Gimignano does look quite nice (and I'd never heard of it before, to be honest). The furthest north I've been is Ottawa, and in July it was nowhere near "cold" (well, my wife would beg to differ, but she's Indonesian). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:23, 9 October 2013 (UTC)

Terima kasih. Hanamanteo (talk) 02:26, 9 October 2013 (UTC)

One prep, no queues, one hour

Crisco, I have no idea whether you'll be around in time to see this, but I've filled a prep, and it needs to be promoted to a queue in the next hour or everything will be late. That's the crucial thing. After that, well, there won't be any filled preps, so that kind of needs to be done, too. BlueMoonset (talk) 06:54, 9 October 2013 (UTC)

I put in an alt, I think hunting was only a small part of it compared to the fishing. Today, no one bothers the ducks, which roam the island. Traffic usually stops to accommodate them. I've been there three times, and when I was there in August for five days, I had this article planned. I have images to upload and sources from the library, but I really should go back to do research at the county library in Accomac.--Wehwalt (talk) 13:14, 9 October 2013 (UTC)
  • Either is fine, thanks. I gather Ms. Henry found it so. How do you webarchive? I am planning to download some postcards from ebay, as being simpler than scanning from books and uploading.--Wehwalt (talk) 14:22, 9 October 2013 (UTC)
  • I tend to use Webcite, though I'm not sure what I'd do if it goes down. For postcards, uploading both sides onto Commons, then just the one, is also an alternative. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 14:28, 9 October 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for getting CPJ... I totally dropped the ball there. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 15:05, 10 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi Crisco. I posted a draft History section that was shared on the Talk page here a week ago and haven't heard back from North. I was hoping you might have a minute to take a look. Cheers CorporateM (Talk) 15:40, 10 October 2013 (UTC)

  • Hi Corporate. I've taken a look. The history looks fairly neutral, and is almost ready to go live. However, current footnote 20 is an error (reference not defined?). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 22:35, 10 October 2013 (UTC)
Yah, it calls upon a reference already used in the current article (#19). It'll fill-in properly in the article CorporateM (Talk) 13:18, 11 October 2013 (UTC)
  • Ok, let me do the Lead and re-write the products section. There is overlap now with the Trademarks controversy and the Candlestick controversy, because I had integrated them with History, since they both take place during distinct time-periods. CorporateM (Talk) 14:01, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

A couple questions:

  • Is it ok for us to remove the Trademarks and Candlestick sections? These are now integrated with History. Since they are controversial topics, I didn't want to do it myself.
  • I didn't know if you noticed that I expanded on the Candlestick controversy a little in the History section already. Does it need even more expansion or just more than what was originally there? CorporateM (Talk) 14:59, 11 October 2013 (UTC)
    • I'd post the first question on the talk page. As I moved the content to main space, it's best to have a third opinion.
    • Second question: A little bit more, if there is coverage of it. Were there demonstrations, etc? — Crisco 1492 (talk) 15:05, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

FA congrats

Just a quick note to congratulate you on the promotion of Amir Hamzah to FA status recently. In the absence of a request, the article may end up being picked at any time (although with 1,327 articles in Category:Featured articles that have not appeared on the main page at present, there's no telling how long – or short! – the wait might be). If you'd got any questions TFA-related or problems, please let me know. I think you know where the TFAR page is by now, don't you? No harm in spreading the word, I hope... Ha, "shortest hook ever"? That's what she said. Note how I am piping to avoid a redirect, cutting down on server load; that's just the kind of girl I am. Man, wikilinking, or trying to wikilink, the MS fragments took forever (and what's funny is that Rosenfeld writes his article when the USSR still exists, and the Priebsch-Closs collection is still private), though not as long as leaving a crappy message on De728631's German Benutzer Diskussion page. Doing umlauts is a drag but I'll fix them when I get to a desktop, unless you beat me to it. I got one more source in from ILL and printed it out, but it was on that day when I teach until 9PM, and then Liam started throwing up all night, so god knows what happened to it. There's two more items in the pipeline. But when we get done with that Scheisse, we'll have (and I know you know the feeling from all the Indo articles you wrote) the best article in the fucking world on the topic. Also, DYK that Kelapstick was in Papua New Guinea last week--I grew up with "Irian Jaya".) Umlaut is usually indicated by an -e, and always following a vowel. I'd have to go and click on the character menu, then select it, and if it's supposed to be in a template, copy it from the main editing screen to the template screen, and etc. I'll get to it when I can if you can't--whether I'll be around this weekend at all depends on how many puking kids Mrs. Drmies is willing to put in the Hondissey and drive to Mississippi, to my mother in law. For some reason I hope the puking picks up, about 5 minutes from now. :) Take it easy Crisco, Drmies (talk) 05:19, 12 October 2013 (UTC)

Got the new ten year 36 page ePassport, I will probably run out of pages before I run out of time. --kelapstick(bainuu) 15:57, 16 October 2013 (UTC)
          • And with me, same country, different island. West Papua or Papua (province)? I've wanted to go to both, but the cost is prohibitive, and I doubt I could get funding as my thesis is not related in any way, shape, nor form to Papua. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 16:07, 16 October 2013 (UTC)
          • K-stick, if you weren't such a Lego-loving family man you'd be totally rock and roll. We'll get a souvenir from you from some airport, no doubt, but somehow I don't think there's a novel coming. Drmies (talk) 17:11, 16 October 2013 (UTC)
            • In Papua, flying into Timika specifically, then up the mountain via chopper weather permitting, bus if it is not permitting (as it didn't last time). Papua is a restricted area as well which requires a specific permit to enter, and the government of Canada has a regional warning to avoid all non-essential travel. I am never one to listen to the government. I got to spend a little time in Bali on my way over, and expect I will again, it's our access point from Hong Kong or Singapore. Maybe I will get Drmies one of those hula girls for her dashboard, they scream class. --kelapstick(bainuu) 23:06, 16 October 2013 (UTC)

Hello Crisco 1942

It is nice to see a young person eager, enthusiastic and willing to take on a useful volunteering job such as choosing the images for the main page of Wikipedia. I am also aware of the fact, as you must be, that the position carries a certain amount of kudos.

I also want to point out that, as a cleaner-upper of images, you have a particular set of values, and a good deal of vested interest.

Let it be a learning experience. You will fulfil this role ever so much better, if it is.

Here are a few precepts. I don't expect you to agree with them all, or take all or any of them on board at once.

  • Art is a valued subject of this encyclopedia. Art is the topic of many encyclopedic articles. Many individual artworks have their own pages. A number of people specialise in writing encyclopedic material about art and artists.
This means that when you put up a painting by an artist, then the artwork itself possibly has a current significance far beyond that of the the life details of the original subject. The outstanding composition, colouration, narrative quality or symbolism in the work of art may all be the subject of encyclopedic writing. The classic case is the Mona Lisa. Likewise, Michelangelo's Creation of Adam is not simply significant because it illustrates a Biblical moment.
  • Every majorly significant artist and many minor ones have a biography on Wikipedia. When their work is featured, then the artist is featured, not just their subject.
  • Every artwork represents a technique which may be the subject of an article. Some artworks are superb representatives of of technique, or demonstrate a rare achievement.
    • NOTE: I am urging you not to be narrow in your concept of what constitutes "encyclopedic content" in an image, in the terms of the criteria.
My reading of that criteria was that a black and white photo of a Rainbow lorikeet conveys little that is encyclopedically useful. A photo may be attractive or interesting of itself, but have hardly any encyclopedic value. [1]. Artworks, provided the work itself is of reasonable quality, and the reproduction good, rarely fall into the category of being un-encyclopedic, because they always represent an artist, a style, a period in time, and a technique, regardless of subject.

  • The word "restoration", in the context of an artwork means that the artwork itself has been dealt with.
If what has been done, has been done to a digital reproduction of an artwork, then the words "digitally restored" ought to be employed, not simply "restored". You can argue it as much as you like, but people who deal with the original, tactile real-world images will not regard their picture as having been "restored".
  • "Restored", digitally or otherwise, is not necessarily better. From the point of view of a museum, this image [2] the unrestored, archived picture of the Armenian woman and her children, is of far greater value than the restored image. The reason is that the photo is almost certainly a unique record of that individual, and the scars on its surface mark its history. No amount of fiddling with the scratches is going to turn it into a top quality photo. But as a remarkable record of an historic event, it is beyond doubt of "feature photo" quality. This is one of those cases where "improving" the images does nothing to increase its encyclopedic value. The only way that its value can be increased is by having the highest possible resolution image available.
  • Digital restoration often has negative effect. Here is a recent example of digital restoration that has caused considerable loss, and even changed the colour of the text at the bottom of the image from a sepia tone to grey. The background does not appear improved by the effort.
View larger Minatare Chief before (left) and after (right) digital cleaning. Note the losses on the outer contour of the figure, particularly notable on the feather.

NOTE I am not indicating that I am in entire disagreement with digitally restoring images. There are many instances where it is greatly beneficial, particularly of printed material, where the old image has seriously lost quality, and/or where the image itself has significant value for its subject matter (such as the South Side image).

However, I believe that the original state should be retained as well.
Amandajm (talk) 13:53, 12 October 2013 (UTC)
  • Hi Amanda, and thank you for the feedback. As you point out, everything must be taken in context, and that includes my comment about "unencyclopedic". Dürer's Rhinoceros, for instance, would have no encyclopedic value in depicting the actual physical form of the animal. In discussing the actual work itself, or rhinoceroses in human culture, it would have some value (somewhat higher for an article on the work itself). For an MP feature, we'd stick with the one with the highest EV: the work as a work. In other cases, say the Minatare Chief, there would not be enough information present on the work to create an encyclopedia article on it, and thus on the English Wikipedia we could not have a blurb on the work as a work. If we had an article on the individual depicted, I'd go with that, but if not then (as is likely going to happen next year) it would be a blurb based on the tribe. This is not to say that the image does not have any EV in the article on the artist, but it is not as simple to demonstrate it in a rather short blurb.
I do admit that I am in a predominantly language-oriented field, and as such have had little experience with the visual arts. However, I must note that I have not said that any image is not "art". My primary concerns for limiting blurbs to concrete topics is (as explained above and at the POTD talk page) to ensure that the topic is readily accessible to the widest possible audience, and as such the blurb will be useful to the greatest number of people. Does this mean that subjects such as cubism rarely reach the main page? Certainly, though that is more incidental then by design.
Regarding credit: I completely recognise the right of the artist / creator of a work, be it of a work which is now public domain or a work that is copyrighted (including CC licenses) to be credited for their work. The issue with having a lengthy byline for the creator, rather than "Lithograph" or "Photograph" is simply that the number of possible tasks that may have had to be completed before a work could be materialised is too vast to list everything. Ultimately, in the name of saving space, the work as an entirety is credited to one or more artists. It's much simpler for the limited (and valuable) main page space.
Regarding digital restoration: it has been presumed, almost from the getgo, that readers will understand that the physical work has not been restored before being scanned by the person credited, but that the scan has been digitally restored to a state approaching that of the work as it first appeared. We are, after all, featuring digital images, not physical objects. Digital restoration being referred to as simply "restoration" is purely a space-saving convention, similar to the colon replacing "by": the meaning is implicitly agreed by convention, and thus read contextually.
Re: Original state: both files have all edits which have been uploaded retained. In this case, File:A Minatarre chief 0057v.jpg has the sepia-overlaid edits (starting from the very vignetted one all the way to what I decided was good enough), whereas all versions of the one on a white background are at File:A Minatarre chief 0057v edit.jpg. I did not upload separately as they were all incremental edits on the same image, and said image had not received any special status at the time. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 14:21, 12 October 2013 (UTC)
Regarding the South Side image, I strongly object to my change of direction in the article caption as being "persistent vandalism. It plainly wasn't vandalism.
The caption initially contained a statement that was meaningless waffle: That the history of South Side was "a long one". Two hundred years is a short history, in terms of civilisation. I notice that you accepted that change.
I also made clear that this work was unusual in itself, for having been drawn and processed by the same artist. The lithography is rarely by the artist, and the artist needs creditting. In this case the artist and lithographer are the same individual and he needs crediting as such.
My other change of caption was to a statement that had universal significance, rather than focussing on the tiny local frame of the place depicted. Bird's-eye views were of great general significance and interest. They were used in the depiction of locations to which Governments, such as those in the US, Canada and Australia, wanted people to settle; they were often used to depict battles and battlefields (so there are depictions of South Africa, the Crimea etc).
My editted version took up exactly the same number of lines as yours.
You made some curious Edit Summary about the part of speech, (using the noun form) which appeared to be irrelevant to the change that you made.
Minatare chief: You comments don't address the considerable loss of quality to the outer edges of the coloured fields in this print. Look at it larger. Look at the feather and the problem shouldbecome immediately apparent. Compare the lettering of the older (high res) version with the latest and you will see the change to the colour. Little has been achieved and much lost by fiddling around with it.
Please note my comments on the Armenian woman image, (currently up for assessment) where the editor reduced a really valuable pic to a poor, unacceptable image, simply by following the lead of other "restorers" who try to make the old look like the new.
Giotto, Flight into Egypt
One of the ways in which digital restoration can be used most valuably is as a tool for the art Historian.
Seeing the Mona Lisa in its original colouration is possible by skilful digital manipulation, and evidence provided by paintings of that date which have fewer layers of varnish.
The image that I have placed here is relatively well preserved, as far as frescoes from around 1300 go. However, like the other frescoes of the Scrovegni Chapel, it has suffered serious loss to the lapis lazuli blue. There remains just a small patch to evidence the fact that the Blessed Virgin Mary's robe was once intensely blue. It is the sort of thing that the casual viewer may miss entirely, and certainly not realise the implication.
The extensive use of that blue was written into the contract and with the semi-precious stone provided.
To me, as an artist and art historian, Giotto's manner of using that totally uncompromising flat blue colour is of singular importance in understanding his compositions. However, the overall picture of how he composed his pictures has been lost, along with the flaking colour. If the blue in the Scrovegni Chapel frescoes was restored and the work published online, it would give a different view of the individual images, and the artist's overall mastery of composition.
I did a "digital restoration" of a couple of Giotto images, about twenty-five years ago, using Paintbrush, which was the only thing I had available at the time. It's about time that it was done again, using the much better techniques, now available.
Amandajm (talk) 01:57, 13 October 2013 (UTC)
  • Re: Minatere chief: I did not reply to that directly because I read and understood it and was taking it under consideration for future use. No reply in this case was not to be read "don't care", but rather "you have a point" or "you are correct". I should note, however, that the colours in the LOC's original scan were likely affected by the yellowing of the paper as well, and thus a digital restoration would (by necessity) affect those somewhat.
I did not touch your changes to the South Side caption proper, as I mostly agreed with them (though I find the caption now a bit long, and again we should focus on the most specific possible usage). That is perfectly clear from the template's edit history. I only took issue with you unilaterally changing the way in which credit was given. As I have said multiple times, precedent is to simply present Lithograph. I have also given a reasoning behind it. Length is not only the number of lines, but also a number of words: why spend five words on something that can be summed up in one? The noun form comment was regarding "printed", etc, which are definitely not noun forms.
If you disagree with the precedent which has been established regarding credit, you can (again I link this) try discussing at WT:POTD or WT:FP. We seem to have a fundamental regarding how credits should be treated, and thus it seems unlikely that we will find middle ground.
Re: Armenian image. Could you provide a link? I'm looking but I can't find it.
Regarding the label of vandalism: perhaps it was mistaken, in retrospect, but at the time I was thinking: how do you suppose one should define edit warring against consensus and precedent on a page which is due for the main page in 24 hours, where all attempts to communicate have been patently ignored?02:17, 13 October 2013 (UTC)
I find it curious that you say that you did not "touch the changes to the South Side caption proper. You reverted my changes to the South Side caption proper. The change read:
This historic lithograph shows a bird's-eye view of the South Side of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Panoramic images such as this one, drawn from life and printed by Otto Krebs in 1871, were a popular form of topographic mapping from as early as the 17th century. The history of Pittsburgh's South Side begins with a grant of land in 1763. Krebs has depicted the area located at the confluence of the Monongahela (foreground) and Allegheny (background) Rivers, with what was then known as Birmingham in the right foreground and Allegheny in the distance on the left.
It nows says exactly what it said previously, with the omission of the "long history" bit.
I was completely unaware that your plan was to feature this as soon as 24 hours, or I would have let it pass, except for the "long history" bit.
Regardless of all this, those of you who frequently clean up old printed images need to be aware that you often have three individuals to credit: the artist, (pinct); the engraver (scupt) and the printer (print). Bringing this all down to the single word "Lithograph" and then putting your own name (or Adam's) in print as "Restorer" seems just a tad arrogant, if you have omitted the name of the person who drew the image.
Re the Minatare chief: having gone to the trouble of editing the two images to make the point, I did expect you to acknowledge the point that was made.
Thank you for your response. It is a pity that the wonderful bird's-eye view has gone to the main page which no mention of the nature of such images, and the focus still entirely on Pittsburgh.
Amandajm (talk) 07:27, 14 October 2013 (UTC)
  • This? Sorry, I missed it when double checking. The issue with this is that the bold link is not to an article which has the image, which is a requirement for POTD. To be honest I'd have preferred going straight to the South Side article, but the image is not there. Perhaps the information could have been reworked so that the bit about panoramas could have been pushed further back, giving context but not overwhelming the blurb.
The template's name indicates the date, in YYYY-MM-DD format. So Template:POTD/2013-08-17 was 17 August 2013, and Template:POTD/2013-11-22 will be 22 November.
Credits: That may be, where such a difference is indicated on the image credit page. I will consider it in the future.
Minatare: My apologies. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:42, 14 October 2013 (UTC)

  • "Widely-covered", "Vital", and "core" are incremental, so that's "only" six points and not twelve. I'd probably agree with the main page representation points. So, by my counting, nine points. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 14:27, 12 October 2013 (UTC)

Hai, Crisco, bisakah anda menjadikan artikel biografi Indonesia seperti Soedjatmoko atau Fakih Usman hingga menjadi AP di Wikipedia bahasa Inggris? Crisco, would you please take a look at this one? It doesn't seem to me that this qualifies as new, since the material was pre-existing (created on August 15, with expansion starting August 28), but it is quite true that Koala15 would turn said material into a redirect regularly until Tony stepped in, reinstated the material, and then began expanding. How would this situation work? The bulk of the current article is still that original material. I imagine you've faced this situation before; can you please post to the nomination page? Many thanks. Transclusion

Hey,

Just a heads up - generally, protection icons aren't necessary for content that's going to be featured on the main page, since protection is assumed (with the exception of TFA). However, if you do choose to use protection icons, try to wrap them in <noinclude></noinclude> tags, or else we get people worrying about weird locks floating around the Main Page. :P

Cheers, m.o.p 01:41, 14 October 2013 (UTC)

Crisco, this one's just weird, and I'm not sure how to sort it out. It needs the attention of someone other than me, so I thought of you. Hope you can figure out what needs to be done, when you get the chance. Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 06:16, 14 October 2013 (UTC)

Javanese script

Hi Crisco,

— Crisco 1492 (talk) 15:48, 14 October 2013 (UTC)

  • Sorry, would not be PD in the US. We have to consider US copyright laws, as the servers are located in Florida. An image like this can only be PD in the US if it was either a) published before 1923 or b) public domain in the UK before 1996 (the URAA) and not protected in accordance with US law (rather difficult for the UK, with 70 pma) — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:23, 16 October 2013 (UTC)

Crisco, what's going on with this nomination? (I figure that you, as nominator, would know where it stands.)

If it needs a new reviewer, I'm happy to put out the call for one; I've just removed the redlinked Mains, and each of those sections now has recently added 2012 material in them, presumably from those redlinked articles (which failed at AfC). Please let me know. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 16:08, 17 October 2013 (UTC)

  • Tito seems to have been insisting on having the "Main" links blue before this could be passed (!), which is nowhere near the DYK requirements. So long as the 2012 winners are in the article I think that's already fine. A new reviewer would be needed. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 22:37, 17 October 2013 (UTC)
  • I've called for a new review that is complete, and added it to my periodic "old nominations" list; I didn't actually call for a new reviewer, but I can if it becomes necessary. (It seems odd to me that three different IPs are being given "make" credit, even though I feel pretty confident that it's the same creator, who has an ISP that frequently reassigns IP numbers. (It makes communication with said creator a bit difficult at times.) BlueMoonset (talk) 02:55, 18 October 2013 (UTC)
  • It's the same IP, yes. Dynamic ones bite. I don't know if this is the same individual who did so many wrestler biographies a few years back, though as the fields are quite different it would surprise me. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 02:57, 18 October 2013 (UTC)

Main Page appearance: Lie Kim Hok

This is a note to let the main editors of Lie Kim Hok know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on November 1, 2013. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask Bencherlite (talk · contribs). You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/November 1, 2013. If it needs tweaking, or if it needs rewording to match improvements to the article between now and its main page appearance, please edit it, following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. The blurb as it stands now is below:

Lie Kim Hok

Lie Kim Hok (1853–1912) was a peranakan Chinese teacher, writer, and social worker active in the Dutch East Indies. Born in Buitenzorg, Lie studied in missionary schools. In the 1870s he began working as the editor of two periodicals published by his teacher, leaving the position in 1880. Lie's first books, including the critically acclaimed poem Sair Tjerita Siti Akbari and grammar book Malajoe Batawi, were published in 1884; Lie published a further 23 books before his death, including Tjhit Liap Seng (1886), considered the first Chinese Malay novel. Lie also acquired printing rights for the newspaper Pembrita Betawi, helped establish the Chinese organisation Tiong Hoa Hwe Koan, and wrote numerous articles in newspapers. Styled the "father of Chinese Malay literature", Lie is also considered influential to the colony's journalism and linguistics. However, he has also drawn criticism for adapting other writers' works without giving credit, a tendency first discovered after his death of typhus. As a result of the language politics in the Indies and independent Indonesia, his work has become marginalised. (Full article...)

Hi Crisco,

Film festival lists on AFC

Hi Crisco. Is it alright if I start working on the Rhode Island International Horror Film Festival lists again? Titodutta said all I had to do was add "at least 1–2 secondary RS" and I've added multiple sources since then. The awards list has 11 and the selections list has 6 (all from the Providence Journal). I'm not sure what else I can do. 72.74.206.140 (talk) 01:49, 22 October 2013 (UTC)

Is this better? 72.74.206.140 (talk) 11:18, 22 October 2013 (UTC)

Ok. I've also expanded the intro for the selections list. 72.74.206.140 (talk) 20:37, 22 October 2013 (UTC)

  • Alright. Looks fairly good. However, how is "Southeast Asia" a country? Re: "nearly every country in the world except for Vietnam and Southeast Asia (As of 2009).". — Crisco 1492 (talk) 22:23, 22 October 2013 (UTC)

I'm just going by what the source says. I can reword it. 72.74.206.140 (talk) 08:58, 23 October 2013 (UTC)

I've added a few more sources to both articles. Do you think they're ready to be submitted again? 72.74.206.140 (talk) 22:50, 23 October 2013 (UTC)

I couldn't find any information on awards prior to 2001 so I removed the 2000 section from the awards list. Almost all the sources in both the main article and the selections list support that the festival has been around since at least 2000. 72.74.206.140 (talk) 17:46, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

Thanks. I appreciate all the help. 72.74.206.140 (talk) 12:16, 26 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi Crisco. North addressed the redundancy and provided some feedback on a proposed Lead, which I incorporated into the draft. I was wondering if you would take a quick look at the proposed lead and see if you also find it acceptable. CorporateM (Talk) 16:35, 23 October 2013 (UTC)

Yah, North got it. I also culled through it for copyedits (missing commas, etc.) and boldly made some tweaks to the Products section. I've been looking into the Candlestick sponsorship. Even paid a $4 fee for a very thorough LA Times archives article, but haven't found anything worth including. It's possible I'm just not seeing it. But if you like I can send you the LA Times article to take a look, or we can wait for feedback from a GA review.
North also mentioned it needed an image or two, which I'm going to look for and there are some External links that probably do not belong, but are regarding the trademarks controversy, so I won't remove them. Should be GAN-ready fairly soon! CorporateM (Talk) 22:45, 23 October 2013 (UTC)
  • Will take a look at the ELs. Agree about the images (as I've said before, the cables!) As for the LA Times... don't worry about it yet. Let the GA review have a look first. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 22:47, 23 October 2013 (UTC)
Lol, North said cables too. You wanna know what's painful - they have an image of Noel Lee standing in front of the garage where Monster was founded. The image looks old and it would be terrific for the History section, but oh those precious copyrights. CorporateM (Talk) 22:55, 23 October 2013 (UTC)

I just got back from Best Buy, where I took a bunch of pictures of Monster products for commons. Mostly the products are still in their packaging and I presume the packaging itself is copyrighted? I was wondering if you knew what how to best navigate copyrights for it? CorporateM (Talk) 20:07, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

  • If you have a flickr account, try uploading there. I can usually digitally remove the cables from their packaging (though, of course, having the cables photographed without the packaging would be much better). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 22:31, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

Pertanyaan

Begini:

Lalu, ada tetangga sy mantan veteran ngaku2 klo dia punya gulungan film Terang Boelan thn 1937. Sy bilang, klo ada arsip lama, tlg 'ya diserahkan k PNRI. Tapi, dia bilang ndak mau.
— Crisco 1492 (talk) 15:46, 24 October 2013 (UTC)
Bersana Big Cola
Terbang ke Afrika
Dan bertemu jerapah?

Salam. --Akbar ini dari Kalbar 04:21, 26 October 2013 (UTC)

Tak pikir, film hilang itu film yg bener2 hilang hingga payah mau mencarinya, dan klo ditemukan kembali, itu menjadi film yg rediscovered. Trima kasih, kak atas informasinya, sbab, tanya jawab sy ini, sebenarnya buat bahan tugas wawancara sy d plajaran Bahasa Indonesia. Trima kasih. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Adi.akbartauhidin (talkcontribs) 05:09, 26 October 2013 (UTC)
  • Wekekek kalau buat tugas tinggal bilang tadi.
Salam. --Akbar ini dari Kalbar 09:40, 27 October 2013 (UTC)

Missing DYKmake in Q4

Just in case you're around in the next half hour, I've just posted at the bottom of WT:DYK about a missing DYKmake in Queue 4. If you can add it, that would be great. (It's for the lead hook.) Thanks! BlueMoonset (talk) 15:26, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

You protected this article after only one vandal edited it. Seeing as how there had been no IP edits since August, I think this was a bit preemptive. Consider unprotecting? Taylor Trescott - my talk + my edits 21:11, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

  • Pay a bit more attention to the page history (and try looking at similar TV station articles, such as RCTI). There are some very persistent, IP-hopping editors (likely paid) who insist on making Indonesia- and Malaysia-related TV stations a hotbed of cruft, overlinking, etc. In this case, the same or similar individual made the same edits which had led to the page being protected for an escalating amount of time (including one year most recently). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 22:23, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi, could you have your comments at Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/List of international cricket five-wicket hauls by Curtly Ambrose/archive1? Regards, Zia Khan 01:53, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

Maybe Remy Sylado's middle name is "Fa"

Hi. Regarding Remy Sylado, I can verify that the song is "And I Love Her" (not "All My Loving"). But strangely, it's missing a note. The source lists the notes as "re-mi-ti-la-do", but the song is actually "re-mi-fa-ti-la-do". (The musically-inclined Drmies can probably substantiate this.)

I've got a plausible explanation for the incorrect title named by one source. The first line of the correct song, "And I Love Her", sung to the specified notes, is "I give her all my love", which sounds a lot like the incorrect song title, "All My Loving". MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 09:42, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

  • Fair enough, fair enough. I'll self-revert. Hmm... odd about the "fa". Perhaps because a lot of Indonesians have trouble pronouncing F? Or because the addition of another number would get rid of the "kiss" symbolism? — Crisco 1492 (talk) 09:50, 25 October 2013 (UTC)
  • Or, if you remove the word corresponding to that note from the song, it leaves "I give all my love". Speaking of musical notes, this is all about a series of individual notes, whereas chords are combinations of notes, so I've changed "chords" to "notes" in both the article and the DYK. Quick copyright question for you, this one about Die Forelle. The lyrics of the song are in German, but the article also provides an English translation. The translation of the first three verses appears to be taken verbatim from a 1988 book, and the translation of the fourth verse verbatim from a 2003 book. Does this raise any copyright concerns? -- Khazar2 (talk) 18:26, 27 October 2013 (UTC)

  • At four paragraphs I'd consider fair use questionable. One, okay. Two, arguable... four is a bit much. We wouldn't have four verses of a modern pop song, would we? — Crisco 1492 (talk) 22:27, 27 October 2013 (UTC)
  • Not sure what you mean: I should translate it as if none of the others existed? (I would hesitate, - this is period German and should be translated with a feeling for the time, Moonraker is exquisite at that.) - For Bach, we got rid of all (complete) texts and translations in the articles, there are links to text and several translations, text is quoted and translation cited only where it is needed to make a point about the music, for example BWV 103, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:49, 27 October 2013 (UTC)

  • Schumann-Heink's death date alone would put it copyrighted in the US, as it was still copyrighted in Germany/the EU at the time of the URAA. So in the US this performance (and who made the recording? that has its own copyright) would be copyright until 95 years after her death (1936 + 95 = 2031). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:05, 27 October 2013 (UTC)

The tag was removed as apparently this isn't a copyvio. See the talk page for the details. Could you have a look as I can drop this back into the article if it's clear? Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 12:03, 28 October 2013 (UTC)

re mi si la do

My last lesson in solfège was a long (LONG!) time ago, but I think enough stuck for me to be able to confirm that that is indeed the opening of And She Loves Me, not All My Loving.

And if you're interested, solfège, also known as tonic solfa, is a system for sight-reading music that originated in Italy and is in use world-wide, by no means particular to Indonesia. (It's kind of the phonics of reading music, as an analogy).

Awien (talk) 12:20, 28 October 2013 (UTC)

  • Only reason I specified "Indonesia" is because for my (admittedly Anglophonic and tone-deaf ears), it is often rendered "Do re mi fa so la ti do" in English (or is that a different system all together?). I do, however, owe you a big thanks for polishing that phrase up. Thank you! — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:26, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
You're welcome - and isn't it a cute way of creating a pen name? As for "Do re mi fa so la ti do", that's the same system, the whole scale from bottom note to top, rather than a tune. You're maybe too young for The sound of Music [[4]]? Best, Awien (talk) 12:35, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
  • LOL, not too young to know which song you're talking about without opening the link. My question: how does "tea, I drink with jam and bread" get translated into the romance languages? I mean, those lyrics aren't going to make sense in countries with sol la si do, right? — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:39, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
Yes, the mnemonic for the names only works in English, but if you listen to the whole thing, it's also a lesson in how the names relate to the notes of the scale. Never know, might cure your tone-deafness ^_- Awien (talk) 12:43, 28 October 2013 (UTC)

With nothing better to do this morning (hah!), just for fun I transcribed the first phrase of O Canada into tonic solfa. It's in the key of F, so F is do. The first note of the tune is A, so that's mi, and so on. That makes O Canada, our home and native land mi so so do, re mi fa so la re. (And whether you call the fifth note of the scale so or sol, and the seventh ti or si doesn't affect the principle). Feel free to ignore this lecture if you really don't care ^_-

As for a week of Georges, a certain person close to me has no problem with that, and thinks in fact that a month of Georges would be fine too. Now back to making the yard winter ready before the snow comes. Ciao! Awien (talk) 13:00, 29 October 2013 (UTC)

  • That... makes really good sense, actually. I've been more... pulling my hair out because of pictures. Went to Monumen Jogja Kembali, got a decent panorama... then realised that the stitching errors were pretty bad. Oh well, time to invest in a tripod.
As for snow... one thing about Canada I don't miss at all :D. Now, if we were talking poutine... — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:08, 29 October 2013 (UTC)
Aaargh! For heaven's sake don't talk poutine! A person could gain a kilo or two just thinking about it! Awien (talk) 16:29, 29 October 2013 (UTC)

Never seen this at DYK before

Crisco, I recently pointed out some significant problems with the nominated article at Template:Did you know nominations/Güstrow Castle; this was a Rosiestep and Nvvchar nomination of their Güstrow Castle article. I have to admit that I was shocked when my Watchlist showed that the article had been moved out of article space into their wikiproject space; although a redirect was left behind, the article currently lives at Wikipedia:WikiProject Rosblofnari/Güstrow Castle. I have no doubt that this is temporary—the edit summary says "mv article into sandbox for audit"—but is this appropriate? Legal for DYK noms? Something we want to encourage? They're adding editing checklists at the top of the article itself. I realize they recently got hammered at WT:DYK for the Chad articles, but is this method of quality control compatible with DYK?

I thought if you wanted to fix an article, you put an {{Under construction}} template on the article and hashed things out on the talk page. This is apparently their new way of handling articles with issues; they recently moved Jiddat al-Harasis over to their wikiproject for review, and then moved it back when they'd finished it immediately before starting the move on the castle article. That took a bit over 26 hours; it's 34 hours and counting for Güstrow. I've just this minute dropped a note on Rosiestep's page, since she nominated the article, asking for a response from her, but how should this work going forward? Should I take this to WT:DYK to get discussion on the compatibility issue? BlueMoonset (talk) 04:53, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

  • Da puck? This is... a headache and a half. Yeah, this is not kosher... I'm against a unilateral revert, but they should certainly not be doing this. I'd say a gentle reminder for now, then more if need be. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:23, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

"Happy Diwali!"

While Diwali is popularly known as the "festival of lights", the most significant spiritual meaning behind it is "the awareness of the inner light". It is the belief that there is something beyond the physical body and mind which is pure, infinite, and eternal, called the Atman. The celebration of Diwali as the "victory of good over evil” refers to the light of higher knowledge dispelling all ignorance, the ignorance that masks one's true nature, not as the body, but as the unchanging, infinite, immanent and transcendent reality. With this awakening come compassion and the awareness of the oneness of all things (higher knowledge). This brings Satcitananda (joy or peace). Just as we celebrate the birth of our physical being, Diwali is the celebration of this Inner Light. While the story behind Diwali and the manner of celebration varies from region to, the essence is the same – to rejoice in the Inner Light! And this year Diwali and All Souls' Day come together to fully defeat the Evil! "Happy Diwali!"JKadavoor Jee 06:30, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

Nah, atas bantuan kakak, sy berucap terima kasih.

— Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:17, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

Hey, congratulations on the Lie Kim Hok TFA! It was good to see the familiar face on the main page. And thanks for the pointer on film descriptions. I'm a newbie in that field. Cheers, -Zanhe (talk) 09:47, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

Congrats from me, too! Always nice to see your work up there. -- Khazar2 (talk) 14:09, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

Reopen or not?

Crisco, at User talk:BlueMoonset#Beixin culture, the creator/nominator of a nomination that was closed a few days prior for lack of action has posted extensively. A fair amount is extraneous, but the gist of the second post is the request that the nomination be reopened. (There's also an assertion that the level of close paraphrasing we found is fine in academic publishing as long as the inline cites are present.) I think we've reopened on request in certain situations in the past, but I'm not remembered what the reasons were. If this is an appropriate thing to do, I'll reverse the rejection, but I wanted to check with someone who's been around longer first. BlueMoonset (talk) 14:04, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

  • Re: close paraphrasing. Wikipedia is, in some cases, even stricter than academia. That's a fact of life, and we should accept it if we want to keep it free. Re: reopening: I'm of the school "too late, it's your own fault". Article isn't particularly lengthy or in-depth, so I don't see that as a reason to give a special remittance. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 14:23, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

The photo has been changed, so if you would like to vote on that one, please do. Sincerly, Blurred Lines 15:52, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

What needs to be done about Indo People, if anything? Firstly, I'd like to fix that stupid info box arrangement with 100 photos. Or at least make it arrange better so that the info box doesn't span 1/2 the width of the article. Personally, i think a large number of info box photos are stupid, but I won't win that battle - as a minimum though they need to be better arranged. Did you get a change to review Kwauf's changes? cheers --Merbabu (talk) 20:16, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

68th Academy Awards

Hi, I fixed everything you mentioned for Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/68th Academy Awards/archive1.--Birdienest81 (talk) 02:23, 3 November 2013 (UTC)

I have re-nominated the set of United States Fractional currency as FPC. It was unopposed last time, but fell one vote short of promotion. Since you voted last time I wanted to ask if you would consider reviewing it one more time. Thanks-Godot13 (talk) 06:21, 3 November 2013 (UTC)
