Rentjong Atjeh
Padahal artikelnya bagus 'lho... Hanamanteo (talk) 06:40, 3 November 2013 (UTC)
- Haa... lah... Idemu gila, bung Hanam. Wong artikelnya saja (terlalu) pendek, masa mau dicalonkan sbagai AP? yg bner aja? klo id:De Stem des Bloeds dan Djaoeh Dimata sy masih stuju, tapi klo klo Rentjong Atjeh? --
— Crisco 1492 (talk) 06:33, 4 November 2013 (UTC)
- Adi, tidaklah gila saya mengusulkan artikel Rentjong Atjeh menjadi AP. Sudah memenuhi syarat-syarat AP. Kecuali jika tidak memenuhi syarat-syarat AP, mungkin tak apa jika anda bilang saya gila... Hanamanteo (talk) 12:29, 4 November 2013 (UTC)
Jgn-lah terlalu sering utk memudahkan sesuatu dlm Wikipedia! Itu namanya mempermainkan sistem. Adalah "dosa" dlm Wikipedia, utk mencari celah yg (katanya) utk kebaikan, eh.... tahunya utk sesuka-hati perutnya. --
Akbarini dari Kalbar 05:27, 5 November 2013 (UTC) - Apakah karna Farras & Woodrich-lah yg mengusahakan artikel sejarah ini, anda lantas mati-matian membela Rentjong Atjeh jadi AP? Tdk! Tdk bener klo dijadikan AP!
Yg kedua, anda memanfaatkan celah dlm kriteria AP, yakni "pendek tapi lengkap atw panjang tapi kurang lengkap." Inikan namanya mempermainkan sistem, yaitu dgn jalan itulah artikel2 yg lengkap, memenuhi syarat artikel dlm Wikipedia, yg dibuat oleh org terkenal pula, anda jadikan sebagai AP. Itukan namanya mempermainkan sistem. Sy sdh beritahu sjak awal: dosa mempermain sistem Wikipedia itu! --
Yg terakhir, jgn-lah skali2 anda undang sy utk memilih artikel Rentjong Atjeh. Pendapat sy sdh clear? Klo sdh, sy tinggalkan dan takkan sy bicarakan lagi masalah ini ibarat ksatria yg masih punya harga diri. --

DYK nomination of History of Chincoteague, Virginia
Hello! Your submission of History of Chincoteague, Virginia at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. I'm never sure whether I should post queries on the DYK nominator's page or the main contributors but hopefully you won't shout too loudly at me if I'm making a silly mistake on this and just not seeing it? It's a fab article and I don't understand why it's languished without being DYK reviewed for so long. SagaciousPhil - Chat 09:26, 3 November 2013 (UTC)

22 minutes and no queue to promote
I managed to throw together one full prep and two mostly full ones, but that won't do any good if no admin shows up to get the first one into a queue. If you're around and can do it, we won't get off schedule. Unfortunately, it's past my bedtime, so I can't stay around to see what happens... I realize you're probably not at the computer at the moment, but just in case... BlueMoonset (talk) 07:37, 4 November 2013 (UTC)
- Got one, not sure if it's late or not. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:33, 4 November 2013 (UTC)
- It's a little late, but thanks for saving us from a lot late! (You did give me a bit of a scare there with prep 3, though, before you reverted.) And now it's really past my bedtime; I had to do some cleanup after Nikkimaria discovered not one but two problematic hooks in prep 2... BlueMoonset (talk) 08:36, 4 November 2013 (UTC)
- Yeah... I was rereading your message, then went... "partially built? oh no..." — Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:42, 4 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi Crisco.

- Diformat bagaimana? Alteaven (talk) 04:17, 5 November 2013 (UTC)

Picture cropping
Two of my DYK nominations have a picture that is overly long or broad, Jahrhundertring and Wilfred Byng Kenrick. As you know, the two editors whom I would ask to crop are not available. Can you do it? Or tell me how to learn to do it myself? In both cases, the cropped version should not replace the original. The former could be cropped mostly at the top, for the other I suggest a detail from the center. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:03, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
- I have a Windows operating system and Firefox as the browser, and this is what I do.
- Click on the image to open it.
- Right-click and choose "save image as".
- Save the image on your computer with an appropriate file name (I tend to keep the original file name and add "crop" to the end e.g. "Wagner.jpg" becomes "Wagner crop.jpg"
- Find and open the picture on your computer, and open it (I have Windows Live Photo Gallery, but other software will be much the same)
- Find the "crop" tool, and play around with this until you have got rid of the bits you don't want. Then save it.
- Where the image page for the uncropped image says "This is a file from the Wikimedia Commons. Information from its description page there is shown below.", click on the words "description page" to go to Commons.
- Click on "edit" at the top of the page, and copy everything
- At Commons, in the toolbar on the left hand side, find "upload file" (under participation) and open this in a new tab or window for ease, then click "Back to the old form" (at the top), then "use the basic upload form" (at the bottom), and you end up here
- Click "Browse" and find your file e.g. "Wagner crop.jpg"
- In the summary box, replace everything that's there already with the material you have copied from the original file (description, licence, categories etc). Adjust the description as necessary
- Add a note to say that the file has been cropped from [[:File:Wagner.jpg]] (don't forget the ":" before the word "File"
- Click on "upload file" and it should be uploaded
- Enjoy!
Crisco may have some better ideas but that's the general approach, I hope... If you're cropping to show one particular person from a group, then you may want to think of a better filename than "X crop.jpg" and you may need to find one or two more appropriate categories, but the upload's the main thing. BencherliteTalk 19:23, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you, will try, but not now, - still on vacation, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:37, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks Bencher. That's pretty much all I do when cropping, unless I'm also trying to clean the background at the same time (and that takes a bit more work). I'll see if I can help here Gerda. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 22:26, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you both! Now I have a new situation to solve: someone else cropped the image for Jahrhundertring and replaced the original. I would like to have both, one for stamp size, one for articles, namely Patrice Chéreau who is on the Main page now. I would prefer the original name for the cropped version because "File:Gwyneth Chéreau.jpg" seems also cropped :) (short for Gwyneth Jones in staging of Wagner's Ring Cycle by Patrice Chéreau) - The other might be File:Centenary Ring.jpg or what you think is good. Ideas welcome. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:30, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
- ps: the other article went to prep without the picture, - I will follow the recipe above some other day, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:10, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
- If the image is not on the MP yet or protected, I'd download the crop, revert the upload, and upload separately at Commons. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 22:31, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
- I don't know what you mean, the image was on the MP and is archived, also in my memories (and the DYK statistic), - what you suggest sounds good anyway, I will take care of the articles when you tell me what you did, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 00:16, 8 November 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you, will try, but not now, - still on vacation, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:37, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
Hi Crisco 1492- I believe I've addressed your comments. Thanks.-Godot13 (talk) 21:36, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
- When possible could you have another quick look. I had not explained something adequately: shinplasters (as an alternate word for fractional currency) was issued by the federal government (the subject of this list), and also by local merchants and municipalities (i.e., script). I have clarified that the laws against shinplasters was leveled against script, not federally-issued fractional currency. Thanks-Godot13 (talk) 23:09, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
- I got that after looking at the Shinplaster article, but this needs to be clear for people too lazy to click as well. I will check your additions when I get home from work. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:12, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
- Many thanks.-Godot13 (talk) 23:24, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
Main Page appearance: Frank's Cock
This is a note to let the main editors of Frank's Cock know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on December 1, 2013. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask Bencherlite (talk · contribs). You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/December 1, 2013. If it needs tweaking, or if it needs rewording to match improvements to the article between now and its main page appearance, please edit it, following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. The blurb as it stands now is below:
Frank's Cock is a 1993 Canadian short film written and directed by Mike Hoolboom (pictured). The eight-minute production stars Callum Keith Rennie as an unnamed narrator who discusses his relationship with his partner, Frank. The two met while the narrator was a teenager and spent nearly ten years together. Frank has since been diagnosed with AIDS, and the narrator fears his lover's death. The story was based on the experience of one of Hoolboom's friends at People With AIDS, which Hoolboom adapted after receiving a commission to create a short film about breaking up. Shot on a low budget, the work is shown in a split-screen format with interspersed scenes from popular culture, gay pornography, and human creation; this format is meant to symbolise the "fragmentation of the body" experienced by AIDS sufferers. Produced by Alex Mackenzie, Frank's Cock was critically acclaimed and won several awards, including the NFB–John Spotton Award for best Canadian short film at the 1994 Toronto International Film Festival. The script has been republished several times and has inspired a short on LGBT issues in Canada's native community. (Full article...)

61st Oscars (1989)
Hi there.
I was wondering if you will be could proofread 61st Academy Awards regarding featured list candidacy since you have done several film awards lists. I understand you may be busy, but I just want some feedback on grammatical errors or contents and I would be grateful for the extra help. I also pledged that this will be the final Oscar ceremony list that I hope to promote for 2013 (I resume college this January so I'm not sure if I have time to keep up with further nominations until I know what happens). Thanks.
BTW: Thank you for promoting the 1996 Oscars. Very grateful.

- Emang kenapa? — Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:06, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

- Yep, I've watchlisted (and replied). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:52, 9 November 2013 (UTC)
Crisco, what would you recommend for this nom, which had extensive close paraphrasing issues. I pinged Yoninah, who reviewed it, and got a reply on my talk page that when the editor had made a couple of minor edits that didn't really address the close paraphrasing, Yoninah took care of it for the English sources, but can't deal with the Serbo-Croatian sources where—it seems likely—further close paraphrasing exists. Yoninah doesn't feel comfortable approving an article under these circumstances, which is very understandable.
If you could either take a look at the article yourself or make a suggestion about the best way to determine an outcome, that would be great. Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 03:51, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

User:189.62.144.40
Hello again. Long time, no write.
I'm writing to you again due to a problem user. Can you block 189.62.144.40 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log)? Based on the edits and MO, this user on this address is most probably the same user as the one on 189.102.111.66 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log)—changing dates and other info without any verifiable source and putting the title of the article on the edit summary. Crisco, does this run afoul of WP:DYKSG#D7, on the "unexpanded headers" point? It's an article on BBC programs for the centenary of WWI, and many of the programs are named, but without explanation of what they are. hey did you see any londo live in the houses on the approach road (like say on the east side of the road 100 metres south of the entrance..) ?? satusuro 15:49, 14 November 2013 (UTC)
- I knew there'd be a comment from you. I took the approach road from the north (don't know if that was open 20 years ago, still quite narrow... we never went through Jl. Solo). Didn't see any foreigners outside the temple complex. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 15:54, 14 November 2013 (UTC)
Crisco, I was wondering if you could do a review of this one. I had to withdraw after losing patience with Tomica, and BaldyBill engendered a hostile response—though I do wonder at the criticism of the Vibe source, since the Wikipedia article on Vibe (magazine) seems to give it reasonable bona fides, at least for a review under their auspices, though I don't know their online standards. (Unfortunately, online typo correction seems to be a rare thing, even at normally reliable sources.) Thanks for considering it. BlueMoonset (talk) 16:41, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
- I've generally treated Vibe as reasonably reliable, particularly for reviews. It is a fairly major publication in its field. Yes, online typos rarely get fixed... digital world possibilities with a print-medium mindset. I don't feel comfortable with this nomination and think a spotcheck of sources needs to be carried out. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 22:20, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
- Good to have another view of Vibe. I also didn't feel comfortable with the nom, once Tomica failed to make that fix. I can call for another reviewer there, but I've already taken myself out of doing anything more; if we can't get anyone to review it, what happens? We're asking for a major investment of time with the spotchecks, and I know we'd be reluctant to promote without them. I could ask Nikkimaria, but I feel like I'm imposing on her a lot, lately. BlueMoonset (talk) 02:45, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
- I say if it fails, it fails. I don't have the time to invest in full spotchecks right now (starting an international seminar later, and I have to teach) but maybe someone will pick it up. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 02:57, 15 November 2013 (UTC)

Steeplechase 2013
Hi Crisco 1492- I try to avoid making assumptions - in FP, specifically the set of fractional currency that was just promoted (and the set of FRBN currency which might get enough support), am I correct in believing that each individual image of the set counts as a piece of featured content for the Steeplechase? If this is the case then I will officially enter. I have three more days to nominate eligible material. Thanks in advance for your input.-Godot13 (talk) 06:30, 17 November 2013 (UTC)

Gender
[1] Yes writing out "(female)" is awkward, but her gender *IS* important because the Wikipedia article and its references explain that "She also gained notability as she was the only woman, other than Hillary Clinton, in the photograph." While reading the whole article makes it obvious which depicted person on the photo is associated with the "Audrey Tomason" name in the article, not writing out her gender creates two difficulties that are worse than putting the awkward note "(female)": first, I had *great* difficulty understanding who "Audrey Tomason" is looking at the photo and at the list of people in the photo: the description says "standing" and "from left to right" and if someone closely looks at the photo it's possible to identify her correctly in the first instance, but the chance of mistaken identification is quite high, and I actually misidentified her (I actually thought she was a male standing near her, only much later reading the whole article I understood my mistake). I regularly interpret English Wikipedia articles in Greek to other people, which means I read the English text and I say aloud the Greek translation as I tranlate the text on my head in real time, and I regularly make mistakes regarding the genders of people as I don't know what names are associated with which gender, I actually was reading aloud interpreting this article and I announced to the other people who were listening to me that she was a male near her, then I wondered who this young woman is and I assumed she were probably a low-ranking employee like e.g. a cleaner or a random journalist as I didn't see the list of names containing any other female than Clinton, and then I looked closer in the photo and found out the person whose shoulder is visible and with the list of names I understood my mistake and corrected myself. Because she holds an apparently high-ranking office, someone not being able to understand genders from foreign names would immediately assume she is male because males are more often associated with high government positions. So, the mistake I did could be done by other people as well, some of whom may be interpreters who read articles aloud to other people who listen. Problem is, interpreters can't know that in the next paragraphs the article specifically refers to her as a woman, so such a mistake regarding her gender could go unnoticed for some time. Of this problem regarding genders isn't only in this article, but it's a good case here, so I think we need some way to give the gender info in the encyclopedia, as the English language isn't good at giving the gender info (in Greek it's virtually impossible to refer to any person without giving out the gender info, nearly all words carry the gender information). While the inclusion of gender after names may seem awkard, allowing such gender mistakes to happen seem more of a problem to me. Cogiati (talk) 12:25, 20 November 2013 (UTC)
- TL; DR. Short version: if it is clear in the body of the text that Tomason is female, having to indicate that she is female with a parenthetical could be downright insulting, as if saying "yeah, this person has a fairly high position even though she's female", clearly a position we shouldn't be taking. That the individuals' positions in the photograph are numbered in that list also makes where she is perfectly clear.12:50, 20 November 2013 (UTC)
- (Talk page stalker: C's talk page happens still to be on my watchlist). Cogiati (I speak as a retired woman French professor): Crisco is right. The reason is that English and the gendered languages have gone in opposite directions on the question of indicating gender when talking about a person's profession. The bottom line is that in English we strive for gender neutrality unless there is a compelling reason to specify gender (first woman president, only male midwife, etc.); I see none in this instance. Personally, I also deplore the recent move towards using "female" instead of "woman" in contexts like this. I'm a woman not a female. Ideally I'm a retired French professor, period. If you have to specify, for example you want to say that professors who are women get screwed if they take time out to raise their kids, then that's "women professors" not "female professors" get screwed. Hope this helps. Awien (talk) 18:38, 20 November 2013 (UTC)
Thanks much

Komik Si Juki
— Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:00, 17 November 2013 (UTC)
— Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:55, 17 November 2013 (UTC)
- Klo Phineas and Ferb (sering nonton d RCTI jam 7 pagi) termasuk anak2 yg "anti-mainstream" gx kak? Sbab, mereka sring mengada-ngada. Thn '50-an sdh ada gak? --
Kmudian, sayang skali film kartn yg sy sbut d atas rupanya tdk termasuk "anti-mainstream". Soalnya gini, kak, membawa monyet k luar angkasa itu 'kan udah biasa. Nah, skrg sapi yg dibawa k luar angkasa. Itu 'kan luar biasa. --
Lalu, masalah koran. Kan kata om, "Orang2 Belanda udah lama diusir dari Nusantara" tapi kayaknya baru mau akhir thn 50'an lah org2 Belanda itu semua pada diusir kcuali org2 yg keukeuh (kukuh) hatinya, sperti Fritz G. Schadt, André Joseph Guillaume Henri Kostermans, dll. Tapi sialnya, tiada org Indo (atawa Belanda) yg mau kerja d pers (thn. 60-an) --
Dekker, misalnya. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 09:33, 18 November 2013 (UTC)
- Aduh, kok pembicaraan kita malah makin ngelantur, 'ya? Baiklah, Dekker.
Akbarini dari Kalbar 02:36, 21 November 2013 (UTC)- Oh begitu. Boleh, kalau saya sempat ke Kalimantan. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 05:19, 21 November 2013 (UTC)
- Klo d Jawa, org2 Indo macam sy 'ni paling banyak d kota ap saja? --
Akbarini dari Kalbar 07:34, 21 November 2013 (UTC)- Konon di Purworejo masih banyak. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 11:46, 21 November 2013 (UTC)
- Muslim atw tdk? 'Dah itu, apakah mereka punya -setidaknya- sedikit ciri2 org Belanda (paling tdk kw2)? --
— Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:09, 21 November 2013 (UTC)
- Kak, sy mulai jenuh membicarakan asal-usul diri sy (org Indo).
Lalu, masalah koran. Kan kata om, "Orang2 Belanda udah lama diusir dari Nusantara" tapi kayaknya baru mau akhir thn 50'an lah org2 Belanda itu semua pada diusir kcuali org2 yg keukeuh (kukuh) hatinya, sperti Fritz G. Schadt, André Joseph Guillaume Henri Kostermans, dll. Tapi sialnya, tiada org Indo (atawa Belanda) yg mau kerja d pers (thn. 60-an) --
Betul, seperti itu. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 06:29, 22 November 2013 (UTC)

UN Peer Review
Hey Crisco, I just opened a peer review for United Nations; I think it's just about ready to go to GA, but this topic is so sprawling that I thought I'd get other eyes on it first. Would you be willing to take a look? Khazar2 (talk) 02:32, 23 November 2013 (UTC)
- I'll try to have a look-see sometime this week. I'll be heading for Jakarta in a couple weeks to do research for my thesis, so everything is a bit rush-rush right now. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 02:39, 23 November 2013 (UTC)
- Very cool. How's the thesis coming? -- Khazar2 (talk) 02:40, 23 November 2013 (UTC)
- Something like 60 pages (A4, double space) and 17,500 words. The proposal's been accepted, so I just have to write the darn thing (and try to find some data at Sinematek Indonesia, the National Archives of Indonesia, National Library of Indonesia, H. B. Jassin Documentation Centre, and the library of the University of Indonesia). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 02:44, 23 November 2013 (UTC)
- How long does it have to be in the end? -- Khazar2 (talk) 02:46, 23 November 2013 (UTC)
- I think 75 is the bare minimum. I'm aiming for about 120 pages or so. At the rate I'm going, it shouldn't be too bad. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 02:49, 23 November 2013 (UTC)
- Nice. Given your experience here, I shouldn't think producing mass amounts of footnoted prose should slow you down in the least. Good luck, keep me posted on how it goes... -- Khazar2 (talk) 02:52, 23 November 2013 (UTC)

Hey Chris. I noticed that Soekiman Wirjosandjojo image is not available in Commons. Can you find and upload it? This is very important since he was one of the Indonesian PM. Thank you. SpartacksCompatriot 16:27, 23 November 2013 (UTC)

Soekarno: Indonesia Merdeka
— Crisco 1492 (talk) 05:29, 24 November 2013 (UTC)
Yet another DYK related Q from me
Hi Crisco, sorry to keep asking you questions about DYK; but I have another. How many DYKs would you consider a reasonable number in regard to helping format the hooks for prep areas? Thanks again for all the help; Matty.007 16:09, 23 November 2013 (UTC)
- For editing the prep areas you don't need a set amount of DYKs. You need to know the DYK process, however, and be sure that you check the pages for issues before promoting them. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 22:35, 23 November 2013 (UTC)
- I'm not planning on doing anything like that yet, probably when I am closer to 50 DYKs, but I was wondering what you felt a good amount of experience was. Thanks, Matty.007 08:58, 24 November 2013 (UTC)

DYK for Franklin Peale
On 24 November 2013, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Franklin Peale, which you recently nominated. The fact was ... that Franklin Peale (pictured) was responsible for introducing the mechanical reproduction of coin dies to the United States? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Franklin Peale. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and it will be added to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. Prep 4
Hi Crisco, I just noticed you are working on the queues and prep areas at the moment. Sorry to be a complete pain but did you see I had posted a note at WT:DYK about the hook for Wellington Suspension Bridge presently in Prep 4? Perhaps it's not possible to change it though .... SagaciousPhil - Chat 10:42, 25 November 2013 (UTC)
- I didn't do Prep 4 and was just intent on getting something to queue. If there is a date request and you (or the nominator) have an issue with the article running now, there is no issue against pulling it from prep. Just make sure to move the template a bit further south (to the special holdings area) — Crisco 1492 (talk) 10:44, 25 November 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Crisco, thanks for the prompt response - no, it wasn't a specific date request, per se, it was simply it is scheduled to run during the night and I would be in the land of nod while it was appearing (and also it's about a bridge in Scotland so probably of more interest during UK day time). I did also leave a note on Gilderien's page but I do appreciate there aren't many approved hooks to work with just now. SagaciousPhil - Chat 11:02, 25 November 2013 (UTC)
- I don't think there is an issue if you move it to Prep 2 (evening in UK, I believe). Prep 1 is full, but you could probably trade an American hook. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 11:05, 25 November 2013 (UTC)
- I didn't think I could do that as I'm the nominator - and article creator? SagaciousPhil - Chat 11:12, 25 November 2013 (UTC)
- Fair enough. I've done it (switch to prep 1). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 11:23, 25 November 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you, very much appreciated - I'll leave you in peace now to get on with your work ... SagaciousPhil - Chat 11:32, 25 November 2013 (UTC)

DYK nomination of Carmyllie Railway
Hello! Your submission of Carmyllie Railway at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Crisco, I was hoping you could weigh in on my talk page; Cwmhiraeth has a question about a joint nom with another user, who just had a nom rejected due to attribution issues with material copied from CC sources (and the consequent huge reduction in text that could be considered "new"). I gave it my best shot, but I'm not sure I got it right. Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 15:48, 25 November 2013 (UTC)

Delisting feature picture
You have voted on the delisting of US Postal Currency 5 cent 1862 1863. Some new information has been presented. Would you consider reviewing your vote?
The deletion request was started because it was assumed that File:US-Fractional (1st Issue)-$0.05-Fr.1231.jpg was the same currency as File:US Postal Currency 5 cent 1862 1863.jpg. The Fr.1231 currency was in better condition so it should replace "US Postal Currency 5 cent 1862 1863" as the featured image. They are not the same. The older file is of type Fr.1230 because it has an ABC monogram on the back. As a security measure, the US Post Office had the front and back of the bills printed by two companies. The back of the Fr.1230 was printed by the American Banknote Company and their ABC monogram appears in the lower right corner. The Fractional currency (United States) article explains the difference but does not show an example. -- SWTPC6800 (talk) 18:41, 25 November 2013 (UTC)

Image question
As you're an image minded sort of chap, I thought I'd check this with you. This version of an article I've been working on has several images. I've removed quite a few of them as I think they are dubious. They're probably PD in their place of origin, but I think they fall foul of US Copyright under the 1996 thing (whose name escapes me and I haven't the patience to chase it up!). Yet they are on Commons. But I'd like a second opinion. Also, on that article (D'Oliveira affair), is there any scope for a fair use image such as B. J. Vorster or Basil D'Oliveira. I suspect it's not justified, but again I'd like your opinion as you are rather better than me at this kind of thing. Thanks! Sarastro1 (talk) 21:07, 27 November 2013 (UTC)

- That's the chap! Sarastro1 (talk) 21:36, 27 November 2013 (UTC)
- I've yet to see a single image that is definitely PD. Most of them fall afoul of the first URAA clause (in the template): They were not PD in their source country at the time of the Act. I haven't even been able to confirm File:Alexander Frederick Douglas-Home official.jpg. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 22:32, 27 November 2013 (UTC)

Alhamdulillah dan....
Bung, sy bersyukur karna klo d sini, AP harus diperiksa panjang lebar (lebih2 dlm hal bhs.) dan apa sebabnya, faktor ke-tatabahasa-an itu [klo dilihat] paling penting dlm penilaian/syarat satu artikel sbelum menjadi AP? Toh di id.wp aja, syarat ke-tatabahasa-an aja gx penting2 amat?
50-an akhir) gak seperti sejarah org2 d P. Jawa yg "terang boelan benderang"?
Salam. --Akbar ini dari Kalbar 06:13, 30 November 2013 (UTC)

Huruf dlm buku2 sy tdk kurang, tdk pula lebih melainkan semuanya sudah di-edit dgn baik, walaupun buku2 yg lain, sy tak tahu nasib mereka. O ya, satu lagi. Ap beda bhs. Kalau perbedaan AmE dan BrE, baiknya membaca Comparison of American and British English. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 06:50, 30 November 2013 (UTC)

- Question though: are the images fixed (i.e. are you not going to add any more?) — Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:57, 3 December 2013 (UTC)
- I don't think so. Should be all OK as it is - there's not much from her time we can use, as she's too 'new', and didn't get into any US productions, so the opportunities for finding free images are very slim. - SchroCat (talk) 09:34, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

I looked over the article structure in light of your suggestion to merge the fairly stubby Marketing section and indeed did so, although in a slightly different manner than you'd proposed. I'd love to see what you think of the current state of The Carpet from Bagdad, especially if you've got time to give it a closer examination. Crisco, I'm not sure whether this was part of a class or not, but the nominator has had only one edit since the end of October (mid-November), and the creator hasn't edited in about two weeks. I'm also not sure this ever had a full review, though Victuallers appears to have some issues with it (and his ALT is the only valid remaining hook; I just had to strike the original as too long). Hi Crisco. You previously pitched in on this article and I was hoping you could provide some fresh perspective here. image status on DYK nom
Hi Crisco, if you get the chance would you mind having a look at the Lilian Bland DYK nomination, please? I'm not sure about the image as although it has a US PD tag, it also has a 'possibly un-free' template. SagaciousPhil - Chat 17:34, 8 December 2013 (UTC)

- Hi Crisco, I can see you've been uploading some other images for this (I always seem to manage to give you more work to do!). The DYK nominator appears to have just been indefinitely blocked [2] but I guess I can try contacting the article creator Andrew Gray? Or can the 'main/alternate' account take over? I was going to suggest either holding the nomination until the image concerns are clarified or running the hook (once I've double checked the rest of the DYK criteria) without an image - or maybe substituting one of the others you've found ... but would they reproduce well enough? SagaciousPhil - Chat 09:21, 9 December 2013 (UTC)

- I drafted most of the article but AD moved it to mainspace & added the image. I'll have a look at this tonight when I've some free time. Andrew Gray (talk) 12:44, 9 December 2013 (UTC)
- Okay, here's my conclusion: I have no evidence at all but I'm really quite confident that image was published around the time of the flight. Bland faded from public attention very fast; nothing was then written about her until the 1960s. It seems quite unlikely these photos were taken, not published, and then unearthed for the first time in her eighties.
- The article is an unfinished mess, though (it was a userspace draft) and really needs some cleaning. I'll see if I can do some before it goes live. Andrew Gray (talk) 22:29, 9 December 2013 (UTC)
- Sorry, you caught me just before flying out to Jakarta. I will try and take a look. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 10:32, 11 December 2013 (UTC)

Uncle David FA
Hello there Crisco. Crisco, I know you're in Jakarta right now—I hope you're having a great time—but I'm hoping that as someone who works from foreign language sources and does his own translating, you'll understand the issue here and whether it even is an issue. For some reason, NinaGreen and/or Proudbolsayhe have decided that I'm an expert, but you'll know what the issues are here, if any are indeed germane. Thank you very much. Possible POTD and a question.
Hi Crisco- I was thinking about putting up a $1,000 1882 Gold Certificate for POTD January 11th (Alexander Hamilton's birthday). On commons there is Media of the Day, which does not appear to require any featuring process. There is a 5 minute video, a rap song written about Alexander Hamilton, that I was thinking of submitting, but I wanted your opinion if it was too long, not appropriate, etc. Many thanks.-Godot13 (talk) 02:11, 8 December 2013 (UTC)

She finally spoke about it publicly in a 2013 interview, in which she described the performance as looking "like a gay bar mitzvah". --Birdienest81 (talk) 20:29, 13 December 2013 (UTC)

Templat Avatar
mau nanya nih bung Crisco, saya liat di artikel List of Avatar: The Last Airbender episodes ada kode macam {{:Avatar: The Last Airbender (season 1)}}, {{:Avatar: The Last Airbender (season 2)}}, {{:Avatar: The Last Airbender (season 3)}} itu merujuknya kemana ya ? Saya rujuk ke Template:Avatar: The Last Airbender (season 1) tidak bisa, saya rujuk ke Template::Avatar: The Last Airbender (season 1) juga tidak bisa. Anda tau kagak kode tersebut merujuknya kemana ? --Erik Fastman (talk) 04:38, 14 December 2013 (UTC)
- Bukannya memang tidak ada templat itu? Adanya {{Avatar: The Last Airbender}} di Wikipedia bahasa Inggris. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:07, 14 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi Crisco-
I made the request for a higher resolution image of the Star Spangled Banner. I had no idea what I was in for... The request needs to go through their publicity office as it is classified as an iconic national treasure. I will follow up with them as it is crazy that the English Wikipedia article does not even have an image of the entire object.
Different topic: the Indonesian "Featured Picture" process, if an image is highlighted in green after the voting period is over, does that mean it is featured, or simply chosen to be shown on the main page in the future, or both? Many thanks.-Godot13 (talk) 05:32, 15 December 2013 (UTC)
- Green is chosen to be featured in a certain period (three days, I think). So, for instance, File:Astoria Hotel SPB.jpg would be running from 9-12 January 2014. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 11:45, 15 December 2013 (UTC)

Edit warring at Talk:Claude Monet
Sorry, didn't notice the WikiBreak message

Hey, Crisco, would you mind handling this, or pointing it to another uninvolved admin who could? User:Modernist is editwarring at Talk:Claude Monet. I gave him a 3RR warning, which he deleted from his talk page within minutes and continued with another revert at Talk:Claude Monet. Sorry to be a pain in your ass. Curly Turkey (gobble) 11:53, 16 December 2013 (UTC)
Just to be clear---I'm not asking for any admin to waste their time wading through Modernist's personal attacks, I'd just like to see the editwarring dealt with appropriately. Curly Turkey (gobble) 12:22, 16 December 2013 (UTC)

- Sigh... both of you: if you are still edit warring, I suggest asking a third party to weigh in / ask for page protection so that discussion is enforced. I've been quite busy, so I cannot do it right now. The joys of digitizing several thousand pages of documents... — Crisco 1492 (talk) 11:03, 17 December 2013 (UTC)
DYK for National Press Monument
On 18 December 2013, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article National Press Monument, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that the building which houses the National Press Monument (pictured) was once an office of the Indonesian Red Cross Society? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/National Press Monument. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and it will be added to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

Hi,
I saw that this was closed. I still thank you for supporting it. Meanwhile, I made a new version of this document, which is of much better quality than the previous one: File:La Cosmographie de Claude Ptolemée.pdf (PDF format this time, because I didn't manage to make a DJVU file as good as this PDF). Do you think I can renominate it? How so? Thanks, Yann (talk) 13:13, 15 December 2013 (UTC)
- Ooooohhh... that's impressive. Yeah, renominating it is fine. I'd just do as you did before, but add a "2" after the title. So, for example, you'd create something like Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Geography by Ptolemy 2 — Crisco 1492 (talk) 09:07, 18 December 2013 (UTC)

What do you think of the status / licensing of this image? I'd like to use it for Wikipedia:Today's featured article/December 26, 2013 but I'm always a bit wary of taking images from places other than the FA in question without getting a second pair of eyes. Thanks, BencherliteTalk 19:41, 19 December 2013 (UTC)
- I wouldn't use it. That's a fairly professional looking image, from an editor with very few edits, and no EXIF data. Suspicious in the best of circumstances. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 04:14, 20 December 2013 (UTC)

Another image question ...
Hi Crisco, sorry I know you're really busy and sort of on a wiki-break at the moment but if you get the chance could you tell me if the license on this image [3] is okay for DYK? Crisco, I have no idea when you're returning from Jakarta, but in case it's relatively soon, there's a disagreement over a picture of a fairly recent public sculpture in the US and whether a picture of it is valid for use on DYK. Regardless, have a wonderful time—and, if you're still there, holiday—while you're there; I hope you find everything you need for your research. BlueMoonset (talk) 23:15, 23 December 2013 (UTC)

Banknotes
Hi Crisco-
The first batch of "earlier" Indonesian banknotes (1946-1948) can be found here. I've got about 80 or so to process. Not all the series are complete (the two posted are), but a nice assortment from most of the issues from the 1940's through 1970's. - Godot13 (talk) 03:49, 19 December 2013 (UTC)
- Those are beautiful. We really should have an article on the Java Bank (I think I started something in user space, but I'm usually drawn more to military history and popular culture). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 07:58, 19 December 2013 (UTC)
- If you've got a draft going we can work on it... I can turn the images into a table to accompany the article... Just a thought.-Godot13 (talk) 20:39, 19 December 2013 (UTC)
- I've got User:Crisco 1492/Java Bank. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 04:38, 20 December 2013 (UTC)
- Looking around a bit. Take a look at De Javasche Bank (section) of this article and let me know if developing a separate article (without going into significant detail) would be duplicating effort...-Godot13 (talk) 23:02, 20 December 2013 (UTC)
- That section is long enough that it would be best split (or merged into the article in my user space). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 03:00, 21 December 2013 (UTC)
- Okay. A few references which may cover most of the bases: 1) A book on the De Javasche Bank, dated (1918), but good background; 2) official website of the bank containing an 8-file history; 3) a website giving the history of the bank officers; and 4) from the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank archives, a 1930 Bank of Java Annual Report (brief). When you get a chance (I know you're doing thesis research...), let me know what you think of these sources.--Godot13 (talk) 04:49, 22 December 2013 (UTC)

- Hi Crisco- I'm working up a draft of a banknote table that could possibly accompany an article. It may be over-inclusive right now but there is a 1947 series (Republik Indonesia) I haven't worked up yet that shows how currency was being issued by two banks simultaneously prior to the 1949 Java Bank nationalization.--Godot13 (talk) 06:14, 26 December 2013 (UTC)
- Quite nice. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense, as from 1945 to 1949 both the Republican government and the Dutch colonial one (often as the Netherlands Indies Civil Administration) were vying for power, and both claiming sovereignty over the archipelago. It's particularly fun for writing articles like Djaoeh di Mata. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:36, 26 December 2013 (UTC)

- I was more concerned about addressing your point, actually, the others I quickly saw as junk stuff. I try to keep up with all edits to articles I'm concerned with, but it's an imperfect science, especially when I'm out of touch for a few days or stuff gets covered over on my watchlist by subsequent edits. Haven't noticed much film stuff moving, how's that going?--Wehwalt (talk) 12:31, 27 December 2013 (UTC)
- Three weeks with very little access to internet will do that to a person (i.e. not much time online). However, I have an absolute wealth of photographs from the 1940s through 1950s that I digitized, so our articles will be a lot better illustrated. I also think I have enough to bring Roekiah and D. I (hopefully) improved the caption on tomorrow's POTD (actually just before you created the protected version) to replace trivial measurements with a better summary of the article. I don't want to break anything, so could you check the new caption and copy it to Template:POTD_protected/2013-12-28? Many thanks, ~HueSatLum 01:19, 27 December 2013 (UTC)
- Sure, makes for easier reading. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:29, 27 December 2013 (UTC)
The imagemap on Template:POTD protected/2013-12-28 contains a wrong link to the firs file. It should be "File:Arborophila_brunneopectus_male_-_Kaeng_Krachan.jpg" instead of "https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Arborophila_brunneopectus_male_-_Kaeng_Krachan.jpg". Could you fix this? Armbrust The Homunculus 01:39, 28 December 2013 (UTC)
- Done. Thanks for catching this. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:40, 28 December 2013 (UTC)

Undeletion request for Buddha Bar
Greetings! Can you undelete Buddha Bar? I'd like to move it to draft space and try to rehabilitate it. Cheers! bd2412 T 02:29, 28 December 2013 (UTC)
- Which version? That article's been deleted four times already. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 02:56, 28 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Can you offer your opinion in this discussion regarding the better photo for an article Infobox? Thanks, and Happy Holidays. Nightscream (talk) 23:47, 26 December 2013 (UTC)
- Hi, Crisco. Thanks for participating in the discussion. Sorry to bug you again, but two other photos have been added to the discussion since you voiced your preference. Could you post again to indicate whether your previously-stated preference remains the same? Thanks, and have a Happy New Year! Nightscream (talk) 18:28, 29 December 2013 (UTC)

FLC images
Hi Crisco, I'm sure you've seen that I've got Bibliography of E.W. Hornung at FLC at the moment. All the images on the page are newly uploaded to Commons (by me), and I wonder if you wouldn't mind running your eye over them to make sure they are all OK? Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 09:13, 30 December 2013 (UTC)
- What's the status in Britain? You'd need to know the cover artist for that, usually. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 09:28, 30 December 2013 (UTC)
- Should be OK: they are all old enough to pass in the UK (I think), and I've tried to use US editions wherever possible to limit the double status clearance. - SchroCat (talk) 09:49, 30 December 2013 (UTC)
- Also, make sure the date parameters are filled in correctly. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 09:29, 30 December 2013 (UTC)
- I thought they were—unless I'm missing something obvious (which is highly likely!) - SchroCat (talk) 09:52, 30 December 2013 (UTC)
- Well, some of them say "2013-..." for instance (File:Notes of a Camp Follower.png) — Crisco 1492 (talk) 11:44, 30 December 2013 (UTC)
- Ah - that was dropped in by the upload wizard (and I thought that meant it was right). They'll all be wrong on that score, so I'll tweak accordingly (and presume that just a year is sufficient, rather than a more specific date). Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 12:06, 30 December 2013 (UTC)
- Right, just the year. The date is probably from EXIF data or something, but that's certainly not what you're looking for. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:10, 30 December 2013 (UTC)
- All sorted - it's the top ten uploads on this lot. The most recent book was 1919 and all bar one (I think) are the US editions. The single British work is A Bride from the Bush – 1890.PNG: does this also need a UK tag too? - SchroCat (talk) 12:17, 30 December 2013 (UTC)
- It should, yes. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:27, 30 December 2013 (UTC)
Wikipedia featured picture / File:Burj Khalifa.jpg
Hi Crisco, Could you let me know how I can find when the Wikipedia featured picture / File:Burj Khalifa.jpg will be listed in the Wikipedia Today's featured picture? Warm regards --Donaldtong (talk) 01:21, 30 December 2013 (UTC)
The following message came from Armbrust talk page;
Hi Armbrust, Would you give me a tip of how I can find the Wikipedia featured picture / File:Burj Khalifa.jpg will be or will not be selected in the Wikipedia Today's featured picture? Thanks in advance --Donaldtong (talk) 07:14, 29 December 2013 (UTC)
- The featured pictures for the Picture of the day panel of the Main Page are selected (mostly) in the order they were promoted. I don't see any reason, why this picture shouldn't be selected, but I have no idea, when this will happen. The selection of the images is done by Crisco 1492, so it would be better if you would ask him about this. Armbrust The Homunculus 08:43, 29 December 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks Armbrust for letting me know. The ping didn't work, for some reason. If it goes in accordance with order of promotion, sometime in 2015 is most likely. However, if you want it run earlier just let me know. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 06:57, 30 December 2013 (UTC)
Thank you Crisco for your replied answer. Would it be possible if this image File:Burj Khalifa.jpg can run earlier in the Wikipedia Today's featured picture? Thanks in advance --Donaldtong (talk) 13:46, 30 December 2013 (UTC)
- Certainly. Any particular date in mind?14:00, 30 December 2013 (UTC)

Crisco, it looks like this one is turning toxic, and there's been a call for an admin. Maybe I shouldn't be the one to go looking for one, but I'd like it to be someone familiar with DYK. Or should I have gone directly to WT:DYK with the admin request? Please let me know. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 08:32, 30 December 2013 (UTC)
- Replied. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:42, 30 December 2013 (UTC)

- Thanks for stepping in. That hook was pretty much what I had in mind when I made my suggestions earlierbut he was damned if he'd listen to me. (I'm so tired of it that I'm going to ignore that December 1836 to January 1840 isn't what I'd call four years, but it doesn't surprise me that he doesn't care.) I don't know why I'm butting heads with people this week; Victuallers has his knickers in a twist over an approval he made that I went to promote but found I couldn't when I checked the article. Maybe I need to take a break from DYK—I can't believe I was typing this while 2013 turned to 2014 here and I didn't even notice. Not really how I wanted to start 2014, but I'm definitely hoping it gets better and better from here. Come to think of it, being free of that mess is a good augur... Your nom
I see it. I am holding off on reviews until at least this weekend. I wind up not that far from you on this trip, globally speaking, as I will be in Canberra and Sydney at the end of Feb/beginning of March.--Wehwalt (talk) 10:43, 2 January 2014 (UTC)
- No worries. Have a safe trip (and if you are in the area [a bit closer than Oz], feel free to drop by! I have plenty of coins if you want to collect 'em, though probably too damaged to be worth anything later). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:06, 2 January 2014 (UTC)
- I don't think I own very much in the Indonesian sphere, there might be a couple of aluminum pieces in my "junk bag" (sorry). I think I have a Netherlands East Indies 1 cent with the hole in it somewhere around, but I'd have to hunt for it. I'll be in Singapore in April 2015, that's in your ballpark. Lafayette dollar, the first of the two coin articles that person from Porlock on my talk kept distracting me from, is in mainspace, if you want to do the DYK, which should probably be about it being the first US coin to feature a US citizen.--Wehwalt (talk) 22:41, 2 January 2014 (UTC)
- Yeah, I know, they aren't very good quality. But the 1,000 rupiah piece is pretty decent, and the pre-2000 stuff seems to have been made out of something other than aluminium. Will take a look. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:45, 2 January 2014 (UTC)
- I think it was from the 1950s or 1960s. I think they sold a lot of them to companies that marketed them to kids, like the Littleton Coin Co. Low denomination. On my one very brief visit to Indonesia, to an industrial island near Singapore, I saw no coins, everything was paper money.--Wehwalt (talk) 00:47, 3 January 2014 (UTC)
- Really? If it was Batam, I can kinda understand that (it's a relatively expensive place to live, and the coins used to be a maximum of 500 rupiah [5 cents, give or take]). Interesting! I rather like the old 50-rupiah coins (this one)... nice design, I think, though quite small. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:57, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

- From me too, Crisco. Looks like a fun flick. Have you seen all those movies you've written up? Have a great 2014, Drmies (talk) 14:51, 2 January 2014 (UTC)
- Sadly, no Drmies. The ones I've been writing about are lost (or at least none of the sources I've seen know where they are). Djaoeh Dimata is at Sinematek Indonesia, but when I asked they told me it wasn't in viewing condition. The last film FA I wrote on something I've seen was Pengkhianatan G30S/PKI, which was a... lengthy... work. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 14:53, 2 January 2014 (UTC)

Drmies (talk) 16:15, 2 January 2014 (UTC)

UK signatures
Hi Crisco, just looked at File:Sheridan Smith signature.png: I thought signatures from the UK were not allowed? - SchroCat (talk) 20:38, 3 January 2014 (UTC)
- Since it is uploaded on the English Wikipedia, UK copyright law doesn't matter too much. The important thing is that it's public domain in the US. Now, as to whether it is or not... that's not my expertise. I suspect so, though. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:11, 4 January 2014 (UTC)

DYK for Rachmat Kartolo
On 6 January 2014, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Rachmat Kartolo, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that Rachmat Kartolo, son of actors Roekiah and Kartolo, initially did not want to enter the film industry but ultimately completed more than 40 movies? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Rachmat Kartolo. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and it will be added to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |
