Draft:Grason Ratowsky

Thanks for your feedback on the draft I submitted for the bio I submitted. I'm reaching out to gain a clearer understanding of the feedback, as I've encountered varying perspectives from different editors. I've made concerted efforts to capture the artist's significance through a range of citations, recognizing that much of the coverage extends beyond traditional exhibition contexts. The artist's narrative is enriched by his alternative lifestyle, navigating between New York and Mallorca. While I acknowledge there is exhibition-related content from the art world noted, a substantial portion of the coverage revolves around the artist's unique duality between cultures and his place in the arts worldwide. A lot of references are in Spanish or Korean, and I'm curious if this might be a factor affecting the article's approval? Or should I maybe write more in the body to expand the bio? I know this is not a WP:TOOSOON aspect, so it would great to maybe provide a little more feedback. Thanks for your help!! Artsjournalism (talk) 10:02, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

@Artsjournalism I'll answer these in sequence, please let me know if I missed any:
  1. Coverage extending beyond traditional exhibition contexts is good, actually! That's exactly what we're looking for. Lots of artists who are not notable as wikipedia defines it have exhibitions, and those exhibitions are reported on in local press; this kind of coverage can be used to verify statements of fact in the article, but isn't useful for showing notability. For notability we're looking for in-depth biographical coverage (this is pretty unlikely for an artist until they're at the stage where they start having "retrospective" exhibitions) or in-depth coverage of their work by art critics. Artists who don't have either of these readily available in the article should still be passed through AfC if the article has verified evidence of the artist's work being in the permanent collection of notable art galleries. I don't see sufficient evidence of any of this in the draft, and I referred you to WP:TOOSOON because I think it's unlikely that you'll be able to turn up this kind of evidence with the artist in this stage of their career. Given the sources in the article at present, I do think it's likely that the subject will qualify in the future, though.
  2. "Alternative lifestyle" isn't useful for assessing notability, though the international nature of the coverage is part of what motivated me to tell you WP:TOOSOON instead of "no" outright.
  3. I did look at the non-English sources, so at least in the case of my decline that wasn't a factor. As stated above I think it's actually a factor in his favour.
  4. If you have more sources to expand the bio, doing this might help. I sometimes ask people to expand the bio when previous declines haven't resulted in more sources, in the hope that the drafting editor just hasn't understood the decline reason and will naturally find some more useful sources in the course of doing the expansion. I didn't ask for that in this case because I don't think it will help.
Sorry, I know this isn't what you were hoping to hear, but I hope it's helpful! Think of it this way: ask yourself honestly, if the artist you're writing on died tomorrow, would they end up in art history books? If yes, they should probably have an article. If no, they almost certainly should not. -- asilvering (talk) 17:11, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

Thank you for the article approval

Thanks for accepting Outside the Magic Circle, which for some reason was automatically rejected a second time yesterday. I had spent a lot of time reading the special Notability rules for books published by an academic press and felt certain it should make it through this time. Anyway, thanks for your and everyone's labor in screening new articles. I know that Notability requirements are necessary to keep away self-promoters and PR hounds (and I'm not one of those!). Best regards - Harborsparrow (talk) 15:21, 20 November 2023 (UTC)

@Harborsparrow, a tip for books like this one: if you can provide 2-3 footnotes of academic book reviews, it should sail through AfC. (If it doesn't, your reviewer has messed up.) If you had another one or two footnotes like the current fn 7 (the jstor one), I think, or at least hope, that it wouldn't have been declined earlier. Don't get me wrong - you did have sufficient sourcing in the article for it to be accepted already. But I see at least one reviewer was confused and thought the scholarly introduction was a primary source (!). It's harder for a reviewer to miss something with a title like "Review of [book name]" and then the name of some academic journal. -- asilvering (talk) 21:30, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
This is helpful to know! It would have been easy to find book reviews, if I had known. I'll keep it in mind for the future. Thanks again. Harborsparrow (talk) 16:29, 21 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from Cedric-adedje (09:50, 22 November 2023)

Are a lot of creators, allowed to remove a wiki article that they don't like? --Cedric-adedje (talk) 09:50, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

@Cedric-adedje no, no one is allowed to do that. Articles can only be deleted through three different procedures (in order: WP:CSD, WP:PROD, and WP:AFD), each of which have their own clear rules. You might be interested in reading WP:PPOV, a list of arguments to avoid in deletion discussions. -- asilvering (talk) 11:48, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

Questions To Ask Later

I have so many questions, to add to do this site, as a matter of fact I got like 19 or 25 of them. I think it's best if I list them, and get back to you on that. Cedric-adedje (talk) 00:17, 23 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from Cedric-adedje (02:16, 23 November 2023)

Can a lot of users be banned from Wiki, if they violate just by deleting a page? --Cedric-adedje (talk) 02:16, 23 November 2023 (UTC)

Your insight is needed

Thoughts on this one? ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 00:49, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

@WikiOriginal-9 oh gosh, anyone with that many books, I assume they're AfC-notable unless I can prove otherwise, since there's almost no chance that two of them don't have two reviews. Kids' books don't tend to get very in-depth reviews, though, so the typical rule of thumb may or may not work to predict AfD outcome - it'd depend on whether participants were actually looking at the sources or if they're just going "five reviews, notable, QED." This was a fair decline, though, because there aren't any of those kinds of sources in the article. I see a quote from the School Library Journal in here, but it's not appropriately sourced. A bunch of these awards look like nothingburgers, or they aren't awards at all ("CBC Notable Social Studies Trade Book"?? this is just like... a list for kids' librarians), but the Caldecott is a pretty big deal ("Caldecott Honor", though, means she was on the shortlist, rather than the medalwinner). All this is to say, I think this is probably an AfC-notable writer, but the draft doesn't show it. -- asilvering (talk) 06:03, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
OK, thank you for your thoughts. When I was originally sent this message, no one had declined it yet so I thought I'd ask you. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 06:09, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
Hey asilvering, they submitted it again. Just FYI if you're interested. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 04:59, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
Actually looks like it already has an article (created recently by a different editor). Your instinct appears to have been correct. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 09:19, 23 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from Redstar0005 (22:07, 22 November 2023)

How do I try to make an article --Redstar0005 (talk) 22:07, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Redstar0005, welcome to wikipedia! Have you read WP:FIRST? -- asilvering (talk) 16:26, 23 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from Cedric-adedje (12:36, 23 November 2023)

Is Wikipedia, similar to Google and Bing? --Cedric-adedje (talk) 12:36, 23 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Cedric-adedje, these last two questions are duplicates of your earlier ones, which I answered above. -- asilvering (talk) 16:39, 23 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from Redstar0005 (20:50, 23 November 2023)

I created an article and I want to rename it. How do I do that? --Redstar0005 (talk) 20:50, 23 November 2023 (UTC)

@Redstar0005, assuming you're using the desktop version of Wikipedia and you haven't changed any of your settings, there will be the word "page" near the top right of the screen when you're looking at a page on wikipedia. Click that, and you'll see some options, one of which is "move". Click that button and then fill out the information required. Done! -- asilvering (talk) 00:19, 24 November 2023 (UTC)

A note

Hi asilvering, thanks for questioning my reject at Draft:Impulse Space. Outside of an editor being disruptive or something like that, I have no issue with an editor overriding a decline/a reject or otherwise allowing for resubmission; no need to ask. We (the community) have differing opinions, make mistakes or new information becomes available. For this particular draft I chose not to "undo" the reject as that would place the draft back into pending status and it didn't sound like that is what you were asking me to consider but if that is your preference, I am happy to do so or you can. Likewise for manually removing the reject. S0091 (talk) 17:51, 25 November 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for that, @S0091. I'm not sure they'll be able to convince anyone the topic is notable, but I don't think they quite deserve to have the door shut in their face yet either. -- asilvering (talk) 22:47, 25 November 2023 (UTC)
The main reason I signed up for the backlog drive was because of re-reviews, knowing mine would be held up to scrutiny along with everyone else's. I don't care about barnstars but I do care about AfC doing a decent a job. We all should be willing to take critical feedback and I appreciate your willingness to give it. S0091 (talk) 23:27, 25 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from Cedric-adedje (20:09, 25 November 2023)

For Question #6 - Also let me elaborate. Narrator Voice is simply an app, where a lot of people share their podcast, or write about their lifes, and since you didn't know. I was wondering that instead of sharing thought on Wiki, can't like many people shared, things out on that Narrator Voice, which I mention? --Cedric-adedje (talk) 20:09, 25 November 2023 (UTC)

@Cedric-adedje Wikipedia isn't a place for you to share your podcast or write about your life. We're here to build an online encyclopedia. I'm still not sure what your question is - of course people can share things on apps like Narrator Voice, if that's what they're for. If that's what you want to do, you should use those apps. -- asilvering (talk) 22:43, 25 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from Cedric-adedje (20:17, 25 November 2023)

Also, how can you easily find a perfect group chat, to socialize with others, right here? --Cedric-adedje (talk) 20:17, 25 November 2023 (UTC)

@Cedric-adedje this is not a social media website. You can't do that here. -- asilvering (talk) 22:40, 25 November 2023 (UTC)

Removing "Anarchist" from Paxus Calta

Thanks for your explanation. I appreciate that it is difficult to classify things correctly and the wikipedia editors are constantly cleaning up things which are not quite right. And frankly, i would rather the mainstream media refer to me as an activist, rather than an anarchist. But i am a proud anarchist. If you put the link back in that would be great. Alternatively, someone at some point decided is was a worthy enough anarchist to be listed in the "American Anarchist" article on Wikipedia (see https://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=Category:American_anarchists&from=C). I am a bit of an amateur when it comes to actual wikipedia editing, so i dont know who added me, but i was tickled to find myself in such good company.

Thanks for your efforts to make wikipedia a more reliable source of information.

Please excuse my sarcasm in my previous comment. Paxus Calta (talk) 08:35, 26 November 2023 (UTC)

Sorry @Paxuscalta, I'm not sure what you're asking me to do - what link ought to go back in? -- asilvering (talk) 22:32, 26 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from Dead76 on Propaganda in World War II (21:12, 28 November 2023)

How do you go deeper in the posters --Dead76 (talk) 21:12, 28 November 2023 (UTC)

Sorry @Dead76, I'm not sure what you're asking. Are you looking for more information about WWII propaganda posters? You could start by asking for help from a local librarian. Most studies on propaganda are specific to individual countries, so it would help if you could explain which country you're interested in. -- asilvering (talk) 01:39, 29 November 2023 (UTC)

One of the worst articles I have ever seen

Riyaz Kharrat has been in its current state in mainspace for over FIVE YEARS. I just had to show someone (lol), and you're the local NACADEMIC expert so I picked you. Looks like it could possibly be notable but not sure. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 06:09, 30 November 2023 (UTC)

oh my god asilvering (talk) 06:14, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
almost all of it added in this single edit! [1]. oy. -- asilvering (talk) 06:16, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for nuking it. I was planning to as well but I wanted someone to see it in all its glory first, lol. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 06:21, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
That is without doubt the worst example of "I copied my CV onto wikipedia" I have ever seen. -- asilvering (talk) 06:24, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
I don't remember ever seeing a wall of text that big survive for that long. And there were other respected users editing the page too who didn't even notice, ha ha. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 06:26, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
I had a moment of "do we have to csd this as a copyvio?" before I decided that claiming copyright on a cv would be absurd. It was, however, definitely just a copy of his cv with the Arabic numbers changed to Arabic numerals. oof. Unfortunately for the clean-up crew there's almost no way someone with a cv that long isn't notable. It's longer than some entire academic articles. -- asilvering (talk) 06:30, 30 November 2023 (UTC)

Editor experience invitation

Hi Asilvering :) I'm looking to interview people here. Feel free to pass if you're not interested. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 18:47, 1 December 2023 (UTC)

Replied! And uh, wow. There are a lot more 21st-century births in this list than I was expecting. That sure is... context. -- asilvering (talk) 22:39, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
I attended WikiConference North America and there was this whole talk about how they're concerned that their active editor base is greying and I'm just sitting there going "huh?" It's nice to see I'm not the only one whose existence is younger than that of Wikipedia itself. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 03:13, 2 December 2023 (UTC)
That's pretty funny. I wonder what gave them the impression! Certainly many people have spent the last 20 years growing up with Wikipedia. (20 years! I think typing that out just gave me three new grey hairs.) But it's very obvious that it continues to attract new editors of all ages. I am really surprised to see quite so many people on your list are younger than Wikipedia, though. I had gotten the impression that when it was brand new, a lot of regular editors were college kids. Learned something cool in class? Put it on Wikipedia! As Wikipedia has gotten more established, and articles are expected to be more polished, I would have expected that bump to flatten out. But unless you've managed to bias your selection towards younger editors somehow, it looks like that's still a pretty significant chunk of the demographic. -- asilvering (talk) 05:01, 2 December 2023 (UTC)
ok that was supposed to be a joke but I just looked at myself in a mirror and I literally do have three new grey hairs -- asilvering (talk) 05:37, 2 December 2023 (UTC)
@Asilvering: Just wanted to say I loved your responses to this. Particularly questions 3 and 4. It's too easy when typing away behind a keyboard to be mean and not nice, and I unfortunately do feel a lot of meanness beneath the "civility" on here. We need a lot more niceness on this platform and I can say working together with you has always been a very nice experience. :) -Grnrchst (talk) 22:02, 2 December 2023 (UTC)
I'm glad to hear it @Grnrchst, and same to you! -- asilvering (talk) 23:25, 2 December 2023 (UTC)
Yo would you mind interview me? Cedric-adedje (talk) 23:41, 2 December 2023 (UTC)
@Cedric-adedje, Clovermoss is looking for responses from people who have been editing Wikipedia for a while, as a reflection on their experiences. You haven't done any editing yet, so that won't be you for a while. But there's no time like the present if you want to get started! Your newcomer homepage will have some suggested edits if you want to try those. I recall working on Category:Articles with too few wikilinks when I started. -- asilvering (talk) 00:01, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
So let me get this straight, you only interview, those that does most editing? Cedric-adedje (talk) 13:42, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
So let me get this straight, you only interview, those that does most editing? Cedric-adedje (talk) 13:47, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
@Cedric-adedje Yes, my questions are geared towards people who have been editing for a long time, as it's meant to be a reflection on their experiences over time. You're still a new editor right now. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 15:24, 3 December 2023 (UTC)

Wordsmith barnstar

If such a thing existed, I would give it to you. This is probably one of the singularly most amazingly representative sentences I have ever read on this platform: "I don't think I needed help so much as I needed to not be driven away". I think it encapsulates what many editors have said to me over the years as to why they stayed or left and is definitely my exact experience. Without Montanabw and Dr. Blofeld, I truly would have left, because of simple mean-spiritedness on the part of a handful of editors. I may in the future steal your line, but I will credit you. Bravo! SusunW (talk) 18:29, 4 December 2023 (UTC)

Aw, thank you. :) I really enjoyed reading your responses as well. I'm glad no one managed to drive you away! Wikipedia is better with you on it. -- asilvering (talk) 18:44, 4 December 2023 (UTC)

Opinion on notability? ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 18:32, 4 December 2023 (UTC)

Hm, my guess is he'd probably survive an AfD. I'm not sure what counts as a strong h-index in this subfield of engineering, but his is over 30, and he's the first author on some of his most-cited work. I expect that this omits some of his publications too (I'm just looking at google scholar, and I only see results in English). Three textbooks would be a good sign too, but I'm not sure those are textbooks. The first one sends me to a link that appears (via machine translation) to say that it has a circulation of 250 - if that means "print run" that seems quite low for a textbook. I wouldn't want to accept the draft through AfC in its current state, but there's a much better version in the edit history. It may well have needed some de-promotional cleanup, but not... this. -- asilvering (talk) 18:54, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
Ok, thanks. I was asking because at the ANI thread, Drmies said "User:WikiOriginal-9, this should have never been moved into article space." and moved it back to draft. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 19:55, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
I mean, I wouldn't have accepted it as is either, but if Drmies wants it out of mainspace the place for that discussion is AfD. I've seen them complain about legitimate WP:NPROF accepts before (eg: [10]), so perhaps they're trying to apply different standards than "would this survive AfD"; you'd have to ask directly, I suppose. It doesn't seem warranted to me to decline it on the basis of poor sourcing since there is better sourcing in the article history that was removed. -- asilvering (talk) 22:35, 4 December 2023 (UTC)

Comments on FA nomination of Education

Hello asilvering, I wanted to let you know that I have nominated the article Education for featured article status. So far, there has not been much response from reviewers. Hi, I made a page (Felix) and was wondering if it was possible for if somebody search "Stray Kids Felix", it would be a redirect to his page. If possible, please tell me how. Thanks! --Redstar0005 talk to me! 02:01, 6 December 2023 (UTC)

@Redstar0005, WP:R (the long version) and H:R (the shorter, clearer version) explain how to make redirects. But does anyone actually call him "Stray Kids Felix"? Those words in that order don't appear anywhere in the article. If you search wikipedia for "stray kids felix", the correct article will show in the search results, so I'm not sure you need this redirect at all. Give it a try and see what you think. -- asilvering (talk) 03:12, 6 December 2023 (UTC)

Request for any assistance with page for Jeffrey B. Perry

Hello! You reviewed this page I have been working on a while ago and ultimately rejected it with a thorough explanation. I did another draft where I attempted to address these issues but was rejected again(4th time) by a different reviewer. The reviewer this time left no comments so I am just at a bit of a loss as to what I can even do to improve the sourcing. If you could offer any guidance on what the issues still are, specifically what points are still 'lacking sources', I would really appreciate it. At this point I would be happy to just remove the offending sections and hopefully be able to get a shorter version of the page approved that just discusses his published works and the reaction to the them which seems to me at least to have the most ironclad sourcing. But again in order to do that I would need to know what the offending sections are.

Thank you for your time hope to hear from you.

Hi @RingmasterCaine, welcome to Wikipedia! One thing you can do is go to your newcomer homepage, select some topics you're interested in, and see what turns up. Anything you get sent to that way has some kind of problem or other. You might also want to join a Wikiproject on something you're interested in. If you'd like to practice some simple wikipedia skills and don't care about what topic you're looking at, have a look at the lists at WP:MAINT (down at the bottom). There are some simple ones and some less-simple ones. If something catches your eye but you're not really sure how to do it, feel free to ask. -- asilvering (talk) 06:28, 22 December 2023 (UTC)

Do a lot of people, Look up things on Wiki, just for College and School? 5. Do people use other sources besides Wikipedia, such as Brittanica Encyclopedia, Fandom and of course Girls Ask Guys? 6. Wikipedia isn't so bad, but instead I always used this app, which was made by Escolha Tecnologia, and it's called Narrator Voice, so during my down time, I often write of what comes up to my mind but, type it as a result. So, is it the best decision, besides posting it here? 7. To be honest, why are a lot of articles, doesn't teach us about life, apart to those newer articles? 8. What might happen, if other Creators, took someone else's idea, that they put on their published article? 10. Why does Wikipedia website, always filled with thousands of articles? 11. How come fandom always connect with Wiki? 12. If a lot of people, don't seem to find any interesting articles, are they allowed to leave, and find other articles online, or keep searching? 13. Is it wrong, to add my own topics, on someone else's talk page, instead of mine? 14. Is it also wrong, when people scam, of whatever article that you are posting about them, instead of your interest? 15. Are there any specific wiki apps, for people to find on Play Store, if they don't seem to find anything cool from here? 16. Last but not least, do people usually removed other people, only through the case of rudeness and bullying? Cedric-adedje (talk) 00:51, 23 November 2023 (UTC)

  1. No, only admins can delete pages, and they only delete them according to specific protocols (see WP:CSD, WP:PROD, and WP:AFD).
  2. The most-viewed page is the front page. The most-viewed article is United States.
  3. No, those are search engines, and wikipedia is an encyclopedia. However, google and bing do use wikipedia content, such as in the info panel that shows up when you google a topic.
  4. yes.
  5. yes.
  6. I have no idea what you're talking about, sorry.
  7. I don't know what this means either.
  8. or this one.
  9. That's fine, so long as you use attribution.
  10. er, that's the point of wikipedia!
  11. I don't know what this means.
  12. No one is forcing anyone to stay anywhere or read anything. You're free to read whatever you want.
  13. I don't understand this question either. You use Talk pages to communicate with other editors. If you don't intend to communicate with someone else, you shouldn't use their talk page.
  14. I'm not sure what you mean, but scamming is obviously wrong in all cases.
  15. There is a wikipedia app, but I don't recommend it for editing. Most people who edit on mobile use the desktop version of the website.
  16. Why would you want to add categories to a talk page?
  17. Your talk page is here: User talk:Cedric-adedje.
  18. I don't understand this question.
  19. There are many reasons why people get blocked or banned on wikipedia. Incivility is one of them, yes. See WP:CIVIL.

For Question #16 - I plan on adding categories, so that way, if most people have a specific topic, that they will like to add or discuss, I can try to create at least 1 or 2 categories. The first one will be about Q7A as for other Discussion chat page. So can you show me how it's done? Cedric-adedje (talk) 17:28, 26 November 2023 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) @Cedric-adedje Talk pages are to discuss improving articles, not discussion forums about the topic (see WP:NOTFORUM). Keep in mind Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a social media site so Wikipedia does not have "chat" pages. For more information about categories, see WP:Categories. S0091 (talk) 21:19, 26 November 2023 (UTC)
For Question #18 - Would I be able to return back, if other articles, doesn't fit my perspective? Cedric-adedje (talk) 20:20, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
There is nothing preventing you from reading wikipedia as often as you want to. -- asilvering (talk) 01:41, 29 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from RingmasterCaine (13:05, 23 December 2023)

Hello! I'm here to say, I would want to update the Apocalypse Nerd article, but I know nothing else, and I don't have the comics. Any ideas? --RingmasterCaine (talk) 13:05, 23 December 2023 (UTC)

@RingmasterCaine, sorry for not answering you earlier (I was on a wikibreak over the holidays). For updating Apocalypse Nerd, you don't need to have the comics handy if you're going to write sections like Reception and so on, for which you'd use things like published reviews as sources. An easy way to check for sources is to search google scholar for articles, which I did here: [11]. The very first source is a PhD thesis, which is great news for you because it isn't paywalled. Normally we want to avoid PhD dissertations in favour of formally published scholarly work, but in this case there aren't a lot of academic sources available so it should be fine to use this. Good luck! -- asilvering (talk) 21:25, 2 January 2024 (UTC)

Question from DerCookieMonster (15:28, 2 January 2024)

Hello! DerCookieMonster here. If i had information on a fictional character/creature which is little known, would it be fine if i wrote an article on it? --DerCookieMonster (talk) 15:28, 2 January 2024 (UTC)

@DerCookieMonster, you can write articles on subjects that are little-known, provided that they meet the standards set out at WP:GNG. That is, it's ok if not many people know about a topic, but at least a few reliable sources need to have discussed the topic. If you're not sure, feel free to ask me about a particular fictional character and I can let you know what I think. Alternatively, if the character/creature is from a book, series, etc that already has a wikipedia article, you can also write about the topic there (and then you don't need to worry about WP:GNG). -- asilvering (talk) 21:31, 2 January 2024 (UTC)

Question about Articles for creation: Hou Xiaonan

Hello Asilvering! After many failed uploads, I need your help with the reference source for Articles for creation: Hou Xiaonan. I have no idea what reference source is available for the articles. Coule you give me some examples please? Thanks a lot! JustinYuAu (talk) 02:04, 8 January 2024 (UTC)

@JustinYuAu, you have a lot of facts in the article (I assume you mean the one you've written on your userpage), and they will have all come from somewhere, right? Find the URL you got that info from (or book, or whatever), and that's your reference. Pretty easy. It's important that your information comes from reliable sources, so if some of this info is from social media and you can't find it anywhere else, you should probably remove it from the draft. As for putting refs into your draft, the wiki software will handle most of the work for you: put your cursor at the end of the sentence you want to add a reference to, then click "cite" (in the Visual Editor toolbar), then dump the URL into the box that comes up and hit "generate". Double-check to make sure the bot didn't come up with something outrageously wrong, then hit "insert". WP:REFB for more info. -- asilvering (talk) 02:51, 8 January 2024 (UTC)

Lead Too Short for Actor/Actress

Hello!

So... a few days ago I saw your user page and followed the link for "lead too short". But is there any way to see articles by our interest? Like, how to sort them to find the articles of actor/actress? Miracle for0110 (talk) 02:26, 11 January 2024 (UTC)

@Miracle for0110 There are two ways I can think of to do this. The way I usually work is by getting the maintenance list for the relevant wikiproject and working from there. There's a WP:FILMBIO that will have the kinds of articles you're looking for. The maintenance list for that project is here [12]. That's nearly every tagged article in the wikiproject, so you'll be faced with a gigantic list, most of which you can ignore. It's sorted by category, so you can click on the tag you want to work through and it will jump the page down to that section. If you want to look for some other topic, the big list of all the wikiprojects with maintenance tag listings is here [13]. Unfortunately, I can't get any specific lists to load right now... hopefully that's just a temporary problem and they'll be working again soon.
The other way is to do a category search. I've done one for you here with the search term "actor", which I think will pick up most of the people you're interested in. But that's going to search by article text, so you'll get some things that aren't relevant just because the article says "actor" in it somewhere. Disrespectful messages

Did you message me in order to gloat? I imagine you call that neutral and respectful, hey?. Shows what you know. And. I already responded to the other fella's note.

https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/User_talk:AntiDionysius#Reversions

Our world cannot evolve if we must praise con artists. Wikipedia pedantically leads the way into a new dark ages touting banal formalism.

Offering contrary evidence is not a neutral point of view and cannot be made to sound neutral. If you can improve something, then do so. Deleting reference to valid commentary is a poor response, especially on a website claiming to be devoted to information and knowledge. Shame on the lot of you.

I messaged you to help, under the assumption that you cared to learn. I see I was in error. -- asilvering (talk) 11:04, 15 January 2024 (UTC)
I learn every day. And I have more sense and etiquette than to repeatedly insult those I deal with. Insulting me only betrays your pettiness. You disqualify as unreliable a reference you obviously know nothing about. Talk about not wanting to learn - look in the mirror, mate. Your reversion was unethical and wrong, and certainly helps no one. Your effort here, at least in this case, devalues wikipedia and undermines any claim wikipedia makes for credibility. -- Ronald Blake (talk) 08:06, 16 January 2024 (UTC)
For anyone reading this who does care to learn about why self-published sources are generally unacceptable on Wikipedia, see WP:SPS. This is part of the Verifiability policy. -- asilvering (talk) 08:29, 16 January 2024 (UTC)

Recommendation On Draft:Amanda Shatzko

Hi, I saw you had a detailed comment on the draft. I edited it and would appreciate any feedback that you may have, including how good is it to pass the editorial review process? Thank you! Wikstarrin89 (talk) 06:32, 18 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi @Wikstarrin89, I prefer not to re-review drafts when I was the last decline (I don't want to be keeping an article out of mainspace in the event that my opinion is out of sync with general consensus). Your best bet is just to resubmit it and see what happens. If you'd like some additional new eyes on it, I suggest asking for thoughts at WP:TEA. -- asilvering (talk) 14:29, 18 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi @Stefandavidkraus, I'm not sure exactly what you're asking, but WP:REFB might help? For your second question, assuming you're talking about references, in general Wikipedia prefers WP:SECONDARY sources, and primary documents like what you're talking about tend to be a sign that you're about to do some original research, which is generally discouraged. You might want to check with the folks at WP:AVIATION. -- asilvering (talk) 07:14, 26 January 2024 (UTC)

Plagiarism (cont'd.)

Thank you again for guiding me through the script installation in the Teahouse. If I understand correctly, this script will enable me to mark particular edits in the page history for review by the administrators? LeónGonsalvesofGoa (talk) 05:44, 13 January 2024 (UTC)

@LeónGonsalvesofGoa yep! Basically, if you find a copyright violation, you have three options. One is to use WP:CSD - this is for when the copyright violation exists from the very beginning of the article history, or for when basically the entire article is a copyright violation and removing the plagiarised bits would leave us with effectively no article at all. The second is to do what you did in that previous article, and tag the page for possible copyvio (which means someone else has to come along and check and deal with it). But if you can identify the particular edits in the page history where copyvio was introduced, that saves the admins some work, so it's best to take this option when you can. First, remove the copyvio from the article yourself, so there's a clean edit on top. Then, you want to find the edit where the copyvio was introduced, and mark every edit including that one and up to your clean one as copyvio. An admin will come along, check your work, and then apply WP:REVDEL if they agree that it's appropriate. More info, links, etc at WP:CP. -- asilvering (talk) 18:02, 13 January 2024 (UTC)
My mistake, it seems the page hasn't been reviewed yet (Zainuddin Makhdoom I). Is there a way to undo what I did? I'm aware that at least one paragraph was plagiarised. Additionally, it seems the author of the page has been blocked (User:D climacus). LeónGonsalvesofGoa (talk) 04:45, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
@LeónGonsalvesofGoa it looks like you tagged the article for attention, but didn't post it onto the copyright investigations page, so no one noticed. Not to worry - I've put a revdel request on it. Here are the steps I took, so you know how to do this yourself if you need to in the future:
  1. I went back into the page history to the last edit before you put the cv notice on it: [15]
  2. I clicked (top right corner) Page --> Analysis --> Copyright vio detector. If you're using the default UI this will look a bit different for you, but the outcome is the same.
  3. Yep, obvious copyvio. I didn't even have to ask you what blog post it was copying from. It's such an obvious case that we can immediately ask for deletion.
  4. I tagged it for WP:CSD (I use WP:TWINKLE to make this easy).
  5. I changed my mind. It looks like the very top part of the article might be fine. So I went back into the history and restored the edit from before you got to it, where there is still obvious copyvio.
  6. I deleted the copyvio from the article and left the URL of the page it was copied from in the edit summary.
  7. I added the "unreliable sources" tag because the rest of it doesn't look great and someone should verify it.
  8. I used User:Enterprisey/cv-revdel to tag the edits that need deleting - everything from the first edit where the text is added, up to the edit where I restored it.
Done. An admin should swing by and remove the relevant page history soon. -- asilvering (talk) 03:51, 24 January 2024 (UTC)
Impressive, I will have to look into Twinkle. To address #7, I actually found this article through a book I'm reading about Portuguese colonialism. Let me see what I can gather from it. LeónGonsalvesofGoa (talk) 04:46, 25 January 2024 (UTC)
I added reference #3 but see an error message in red (Zainuddin Makhdoom I). Can you help me correct? I am trying to find more reliable sources. LeónGonsalvesofGoa (talk) 05:30, 30 January 2024 (UTC)
@LeónGonsalvesofGoa Done! You could also remove that parameter entirely, probably, but I left it. -- asilvering (talk) 05:36, 30 January 2024 (UTC)

Page mover granted

Hello, Asilvering. Your account has been granted the "extendedmover" user right, either following a request for it or demonstrating familiarity with working with article names and moving pages. You are now able to rename pages without leaving behind a redirect, move subpages when moving the parent page(s), and move category pages.

Please take a moment to review Wikipedia:Page mover for more information on this user right, especially the criteria for moving pages without leaving a redirect. Please remember to follow post-move cleanup procedures and make link corrections where necessary, including broken double-redirects when suppressredirect is used. This can be done using Special:WhatLinksHere. It is also very important that no one else be allowed to access your account, so you should consider taking a few moments to secure your password. As with all user rights, be aware that if abused, or used in controversial ways without consensus, your page mover status can be revoked.
