Question from DCfootball09 (13:51, 24 October 2024)
[edit]Hi! I submitted my first article and it was denied and need some editing. I completed the step suggested. It there a way to alert the original reader to review again? --DCfootball09 (talk) 13:51, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hello DCfootball09, and welcome to Wikipedia! To request that a draft be re-reviewed after your edits, there is a "Resubmit" link at the very bottom of that big box above the article. In future, please don't remove that big box, since it's how Wikipedia tracks the progress of drafts. I put it back for you, so you should now be able to see a blue "Resubmit" button. If you have any other trouble, feel free to ask, and happy editing! ~ L 🌸 (talk) 16:16, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you so much! I have no idea how I did that mistakenly! I'm still learning and can't wait to expand my knowledge DCfootball09 (talk) 17:25, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
- Learning to edit Wikipedia can be like trying to drink from a firehose -- lots of details to keep track of all at once! The best way to learn is by doing. Glad I could help in this instance and good luck with your future work. ~ L 🌸 (talk) 19:51, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
- Morning! Any help you can give me with my article further? I'm trying not to be impatient but I'm so anxious haha DCfootball09 (talk) 16:35, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- If you're asking about Pat Bastien, it looks like that was already approved through AfC! I made a few polishing edits myself just now. If you want to continue improving the article, the first thing I notice that the page is an orphan (meaning no other pages link to it). The biography is also lacking a lot of info on his life before college. And it would be nice to add the page to some more categories -- I personally use Wikipedia:HotCat for that. Of all those, the orphan status seems most urgent to me. You could also start planning your next article! My advice there would be to start with a magazine or newspaper that covers topics of interest to you, and the next time you read an interesting, in-depth profile, go and see if you can use it to make or expand a Wiki article. I hope you have fun! ~ L 🌸 (talk) 18:55, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hi again! I noticed some of the content at Pat Bastien was removed because it didn't match the source it was cited to. I wanted to emphasize that verifiability is a crucial part of writing Wikipedia articles, so even if you know something is true from your familiarity with the topic, it needs to be in a published source somewhere else before we put it in the Wiki article. If you'd like help researching sources to put some info on Bastian's coaching philosophy back in the article, just let me know.
- Regarding the tags for promotional language, spammers often remove those tags in bad faith, so it can look a little shady when a newbie removes their own promo/NPOV tag. It can also take a while to really learn how to write in Wikipedia's dry, factual style, so it's hard for a newbie to evaluate whether the tag is still appropriate. If you think you've fixed up an article enough that it's not promotional anymore, a good idea is to ask for a second look at the Teahouse.
- Anyway, that's my unsolicited advice for now -- if you have any questions as you edit, or want to solicit more advice, just let me know! ~ L 🌸 (talk) 20:45, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- I will accept ALL of the advice! This is really fun just have to continue to refine until I get it just right. I truly appreciate you taking the time to explain. DCfootball09 (talk) 21:15, 22 November 2024 (UTC)

Administrator Elections: Voting phase
[edit]The voting phase of the October 2024 administrator elections has started and continues until 23:59 31st October 2024 UTC. You can participate in the voting phase at Wikipedia:Administrator elections/October 2024/Voting phase.
As a reminder, the schedule of the election is:
- October 25–31 - SecurePoll voting phase
- November 1–? - Scrutineering phase
In the voting phase, the candidate subpages will close to public questions and discussion, and everyone who qualifies for a vote will have a week to use the SecurePoll software to vote, which uses a secret ballot. You can see who voted, but not who they voted for. Please note that the vote tallies cannot be made public until after voting has ended and as such, it will not be possible for you to see an individual candidate's tally during the election. The suffrage requirements are different from those at RFA.
Once voting concludes, we will begin the scrutineering phase, which will last for an indeterminate amount of time, perhaps a week or two. Once everything is certified, the results will be posted on the main election page. In order to be granted adminship, a candidate must have received at least 70.0% support, calculated as Support / (Support + Oppose). As this is a vote and not a consensus, there are no bureaucrat discussions ("crat chats").
Any questions or issues can be asked on the election talk page. Thank you for your participation. Happy electing.

Question from Tres Libras (18:31, 23 November 2024)
[edit]Hello,
I’d like to create an article, but I’m not sure where to find good ideas for a topic. I’m open to working on anything and plan to draft it slowly in my sandbox. I won’t publish it until I’ve received your feedback.
Thank you! --— Tres Libras (talk) 18:31, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hello Tres Libras, and welcome to Wikipedia! Personally, I think it's easiest to start with a source of information first, and then see what articles it leads you to. (And keep in mind that expanding an existing article is often much more useful than making a new article.) So, I'd grab any book or long magazine article that interests you, and as you read, see if it has information that could be added to existing Wikipedia articles on related topics. If you really do want to do a whole article from scratch, I think a similar approach still applies -- look for some topic where you can find 2-3 in-depth sources about it but there's no Wikipedia article. WP:BACKWARD has more advice in this vein. Personally, I find there are a lot of books where there is plenty of information in book reviews but no Wikipedia article, so I work on those a lot. If you have more specific questions as you work, feel free to ask, and happy editing! ~ L 🌸 (talk) 21:59, 24 November 2024 (UTC)

Question from Eternal-Opto-Mistic-Wonderer (14:47, 31 December 2024)
[edit]Good morning. Nothing to ask yet. And, I'm not sure I'll be a true editor. I'm more interested in learning what exists and positing what might be; that is, trying to "wonder" aloud aimlessly and seeking the worlds' response. --Eternal-Opto-Mistic-Wonderer (talk) 14:47, 31 December 2024 (UTC)

Welcome to the 2025 WikiCup!
[edit]Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2025 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor, we hope the WikiCup will give you a chance to improve your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page.
For the 2025 WikiCup, we've implemented several changes to the scoring system. The highest-ranking contestants will now receive tournament points at the end of each round, and final rankings are decided by the number of tournament points each contestant has. If you're busy and can't sign up in January, don't worry: Signups are now open throughout the year. To make things fairer for latecomers, the lowest-scoring contestants will no longer be eliminated at the end of each round.
The first round will end on 26 February. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email), Epicgenius (talk · contribs · email), Frostly (talk · contribs · email), Guerillero (talk · contribs · email) and Lee Vilenski (talk · contribs · email). 2025 Update from Women in Green
[edit]Hello LEvalyn:
2024 has wrapped up, and what a full year it was for WikiProject Women in Green! Over the past year, we hosted two edit-a-thons, one themed around women's history and another on women around the world. We also managed to achieve most of our 2024 annual goals, nominating 75 articles for GA, reviewing 64 GA nominations, nominating 8 articles for FAC, peer reviewing 3 articles and reviewing 10 FAC nominations. Excellent work, and thank you to everyone involved!
For 2025 we have a new set of goals for nominations and reviews. In particular, we would like to see more articles on our Hot 100 list being improved and nominated for GA this year. If you take a look at the list and see an article you are interested in contributing to, feel free to add it and yourself to our Hot 100 project discussion. You might even find someone interested in collaborating with you!
This year, as with every year, we hope you will join us in helping improve our coverage of women and women's works on this encyclopedia. Every contribution helps. We'll see you around!

Question from InekeCrezee (08:37, 5 January 2025)
[edit]Hello mentor, I am very happy to have your assistance! I have been battling fake information in my wikipedia page for many years. for some reason, my date of birth is coming up as 01 January 1950 and I am at my wits end trying to change this as it is incorrect. Please assist. Happy New Year and many thanks! Ineke Hendrika Martine Crezee --InekeCrezee (talk) 08:37, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
- Hello Dr. Crezee, and welcome to Wikipedia! How frustrating. Wikipedia's policy is to to only include birthdays when they have been reported in multiple secondary sources or published by the person themselves. (You can read the policy here.) It looks like for now you've successfully removed the date; I have added your biography to my "watch list" and I will keep an eye out to make sure the date is not re-added. If you would like a birth year to be included, and for it to be the correct one, you could make a post on a public social media site that just says "For the record, I was born in XXXX!" and that can be used to put the correct year in the article. Just send me the link if you decide you want to do that.
- Also -- as annoying as I'm sure this has been, since you have an account now, you could consider making improvements to Wikipedia's articles about linguistics topics! The humanities can get a bit overlooked here, and your expertise could be a real boon to the encyclopedia. As long as your changes include a citation (even an offline/paywalled one) they would be very welcome.
- Let me know any time can help further! ~ L 🌸 (talk) 08:55, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
- Oh, actually, looking more closely, it seems you intended to update the birthdate, not remove it! The birthdate is "hidden" in the article right now, so your change isn't visible to readers. I can un-hide it if that is what you prefer; just let me know. (Or you can un-hide it by deleting the "<!--" parts.) ~ L 🌸 (talk) 09:00, 5 January 2025 (UTC)

Question from CeleniaSig (12:24, 8 January 2025)
[edit]Hi, I was looking through the Vulpes page when i noticed an extinct species called "Vulpes Gigas". I wanted to find more information about it, but after at least an hour of searching i can't find any proof that it actually existed. I don't question it existing, as it's referenced in other websites, but I can't find a solid source for it. What should I do? --CeleniaSig (talk) 12:24, 8 January 2025 (UTC)
- Hello CeleniaSig, and thanks for raising this topic. I... actually do now question the existence of Vulpes gigas? I get zero hits on Google Scholar, which is pretty unusual for something that's real! And the websites seem like they could have just gotten their information from Wikipedia, in an example of WP:Citogenesis. I notice that it's only mentioned in list of 'fossil species' on the main Vulpes article, where there isn't a single citation to support that it's real.
- Since there is no citation, you can delete Vulpes gigas from the list with an edit summary like "removing unsourced material that I can't reliably verify elsewhere." If someone else with more expertise is able to find a reliable source with more information, they can add it back in with a citation. (And then you can read their cited source to learn more!) You could also mention on the article's talk page that you are doing this, to encourage other editors with more expertise on the topic to weigh in.
- Thanks for your eagle eye here, and let me know if you have any future questions! ~ L 🌸 (talk) 22:57, 9 January 2025 (UTC)

- Hello Sugar candyy, and welcome to Wikipedia! It sounds like you've found some outdated information that needs to be updated. This is a great kind of edit to make yourself, to learn the ropes of Wikipedia. Here are the general steps:
- Find a news article that says Victor Oko-Jumbo has become the Speaker of the Assembly.
- Click "edit" on the article to delete the current sentence and add something like, "Since [YEAR], the Speaker of the State Assembly is Victor Oko-Jumbo".
- Click the "cite" button and follow the instructions here to put a reference to your news article after the sentence.
- If you have any trouble, let me know and I am glad to help, or you can get a faster response by asking at the Teahouse. Happy editing! ~ L 🌸 (talk) 23:02, 9 January 2025 (UTC)

Pardon my query: What is the consensus format on dates? I often see dates posted as, for example, "March 10 1980", instead of "March 10th, 1980". Technically this is grammatically incorrect, but is this the accepted date format? --Aorclippy (talk) 16:58, 10 January 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for reaching out to check! It looks like in the Manual of Style at MOS:DATE (short version at WP:DATEOVERVIEW), the format “March 10 1980” is an error. The style is to use either “10 March 1980” or “March 10, 1980” (which just has to be consistent within the article). You can improve these when you find them by adding the missing comma. Happy editing! ~ L 🌸 (talk) 21:14, 10 January 2025 (UTC)

I don't do this much myself, but I think this help page will give some useful guidance. The main ideas, as far as I know, are, 1, each wikipedia has its own policies and anything added to the English wikipedia must follow English wikipedia's policies; and, 2, translations need to be properly attributed. You can also ask at the Teahouse to get advice from a wider pool of editors. Good luck, and happy editing! ~ L 🌸 (talk) 02:50, 13 January 2025 (UTC)

I have warned twice a user for spreading misinformation and ten times in edit. still, he kept changing and started giving fake counter warnings to prove his points and removed high-quality citations. what should I do? --Adrikshit (talk) 06:07, 15 January 2025 (UTC)
- Looking at the discussions on your talk page, it appears that you are involved in a content dispute in a contentious topic. Wikipedia's policy about neutral point of view requires that all major viewpoints are considered, which may include viewpoints you disagree with. A new wikipedian trying to edit a contentious topic should approach debates by assuming that you don't already know what the outcome should be for any particular article or edit. That includes not assuming that you already know what counts as a "high-quality" citation for that topic. To get consensus about what makes for a good citation, you can ask at the Reliable Sources noticeboard and check their list of sources that have been discussed before. I recommend that you do not issue any further warnings. Instead, I suggest you ask for more opinions about how the article is written, either at the Reliable Sources noticeboard that I mentioned or through dispute resolution. I also recommend that you slow down and focus on assuming good faith when trying to determine how the articles should be written. Your current approach seems highly confrontational, and debating in bad faith is likely to lead to being blocked from Wikipedia. ~ L 🌸 (talk) 01:52, 17 January 2025 (UTC)

Question from NAL Editor (20:25, 16 January 2025)
[edit]Hi, LEvalyn! I didn't realize I'd be editing code. Yikes. The birth and death dates for Sam Bernard are incorrect. Per his birth certificate and tombstone, he was born 16 July 1863, and per his death certificate and tombstone, he died 17 May 1927 (at sea). How the heck do I correct this? --NAL Editor (talk) 20:25, 16 January 2025 (UTC)
- Hello NAL Editor, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thanks for catching this error. It sounds like there are two things going on here! First, if you want to edit in an interface that looks less like code, try clicking "edit source" like usual and then look for a pencil icon in the top-right, next to the word "preview". Click that pencil and choose "visual editor". If you want to edit the infobox from that mode, double-click on it. You should be able to just type in the correct dates, but if you have any trouble, let me know.
- The second thing I want to give some advice on it how to add citations verifying these new dates. The usual thing is that the first paragraph and the infobox will summarize information, and the main article will explain it and cite sources. It looks like Sam Bernard doesn't specify any birth/death dates in the main article at all, so it would be really helpful if you could add that information, and follow these instructions to add a source. Usually, Wikipedia prefers to cite a biography or other article about a person, rather than their birth certificate or tombstone -- that way we can be certain it's the right Sam Bernard's information. An obituary is often a good source. Do you know of something to cite? If not, I can help you look.
- Thanks again for helping Wikipedia be more accurate, and happy editing! ~ L 🌸 (talk) 00:00, 17 January 2025 (UTC)

GAN paperwork
[edit]Hi, just a note on how to record GAN results: there are several steps, putting the icon on the article, marking the talk page as passed and the WikiProject status as GA, and putting a link on the WP:GA list page. All of these can be done automatically by running the GAN tool.
The GAN Instructions page usefully adds:
"Many of the technical steps for nominators are automated with the GAN-helper user script (how to install), and the GANReviewTool does the same when you review an article."
All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 10:44, 17 January 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you for this note, but I'm not entirely sure which part of the GAN paperwork I may have messed up. I do use the GANReviewTool, but maybe I used it wrong. Can you point me to my error? ~ L 🌸 (talk) 18:35, 17 January 2025 (UTC)
