Student athlete compensation → Name, image, and likeness – This article is about the set of rules in the United States; most articles linking here seem to use "name, image, and likeness" rather than this contrived title. Hameltion (talk | contribs) 19:11, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
- Leaning oppose, as the proposed target is too broad. There are all sorts of public figures whose "name, image, and likeness" are of value, from professional athletes to disc jockeys and movie stars. It is a stock phrase in contracts for famous people for the use of these attributes. See, e.g., this Voice of America article, noting a licensor seeking "to ensure that their use of Elvis’ name, image and likeness are officially licensed and authorized". - One or even a handful of random uses of the words as a phrase are not enough to make it a generic term. Search
"name image and likeness"
on Google Scholar, and you'll find only results about college athletics on the first I don't know how many pages. Even limited just to sources from before 2020, I don't see a stock use of the phrase until result 15, and then not again 30. Hameltion (talk | contribs) 03:02, 16 March 2024 (UTC)- There's nothing "random" about the other uses. The phrase was put into NCAA policy in 2021 (as an exception to their amateurism policy) because it's been an established phrase for rights of publicity since the 1980's and going back to seminal cases like Haelan Laboratories, Inc. v. Topps Chewing Gum, Inc. (2d. Cir. 1953) ("likenesses"), Zacchini v. Scripps-Howard Broadcasting Co. (U.S. 1977) ("name or likeness"), Lugosi v. Universal Pictures (Cal. 1979) ("name, face and/or likeness"), Instrumentalist Co. v. Marine Corps League (7th Cir. 1982) ("name, image and/or likeness"). SilverLocust 💬 13:53, 16 March 2024 (UTC)

- Oppose rename. The article Student athlete compensation should broadly cover the history of amateurism and professionalism in college athletics and the NCAA, including the many decades before NIL was instituted. The modern NIL system will be one section in that article. I would Support creation of a dedicated Name, image, and likeness or Name, image, and likeness (NCAA policy) article, rather than a redirect here, to cover specifically the NIL system. The NCAA NIL rule change is notable enough for its own article. PK-WIKI (talk) 09:04, 16 March 2024 (UTC)
- @PK-WIKI: I would support a free-standing Name, image, and likeness article. It is clearly a notable concept by itself. BD2412 T 17:50, 16 March 2024 (UTC)
- Comment Even the topic of Student athlete compensation has a lot of overlap with Amateurism in the NCAA. Without some clearer delineation on the higher level topic(s) or even consideration of a merge (pages aren't the big currently), a rename to a lower-level title seems premature.—Bagumba (talk) 04:17, 17 March 2024 (UTC)
