Raymundo Deyro

[edit]

Hi,

I've seen you putting in the Wikipedia information for Raymundo Deyro. He's actually my uncle and I wanted to see if you are related to him also and how. I'm currently working on the Deyro family tree and I'm exploring all areas where I can get information to complete the tree. You can email me at seareigna@yahoo.com. Hope to hear back from you. Thank you. SeaReigna (talk) 16:46, 16 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. No relation I'm afraid. I just like to write biographies on tennis players, one of which was your uncle. Sorry to hear that he passed away. Jevansen (talk) 00:18, 17 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Jevansen:; the Cap Numbers of this article (List of South Sydney Rabbitohs players) appear to out-of-sync with thessralmanac.com list (List of South Sydney Rabbitohs Premiership First Grade Players), e.g. Paul O'Brien is 613 in the artcile, but 628 ssralmanac.com list. I, Darwinek, hereby award you this barnstar for your excellent contributions in the area of sport articles, particularly tennis. You fill the gaps that exist on Wikipedia, and that's a tremendous help to the project. - Darwinek (talk) 22:25, 22 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sportspeople categories

[edit]

Hi Jevansen. I noticed you created recently a bunch of new "Sportspeople from" categories for the Czech Republic and Slovakia. As a member of both WikiProjects, I wanted to express my big thank you for this effort. Could I ask you to create also categories for Sportspeople from Jihlava and Sportspeople from Karlovy Vary? Those are the last remaining Czech regional capitals that don't have their sportspeople categories. Thank you.--Darwinek (talk) 22:25, 22 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, you're most welcome. I'll add Jihlava and Karlovy Vary to my list. Jevansen (talk) 00:10, 23 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

project tagging

[edit]

is there any particular reason for not adding qualifying projects when tagging ? JarrahTree 10:40, 24 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Jarrah, guessing you mean why I don't add all applicable projects when I create the talk page? In most cases, were I to do it this way via AWB it wouldn't be much easier or faster than doing so manually (thus becoming a less attractive task to do en masse). I see you've added some more tags to some of these categories so thanks. Jevansen (talk) 11:12, 24 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough... JarrahTree 13:53, 24 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
As long as you realise that it causes a lot of people to have to follow your edits to fix up and complete - the value of incomplete tagging is... ? JarrahTree 00:46, 25 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
That's ridiculous. Firstly nothing needs fixing. The tagging can be expanded, in the same way a stub article can be built on. Secondly, these people who you say have to follow up these edits are in no worse a position than if the article wasn't tagged in the first place. If anything they have one less tag to add. If you see instances where I have added an inappropriate project tags, let me know, otherwise ... Jevansen (talk) 01:00, 25 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
My sincere apologies, I hadnt realised you had replied. We have very different ideas (nothing needs fixing), but what has evolved since this conversation, is that yes, after considering some issues, indeed, any tagging of any sort is better than none at all. I do think your idea about tagged pages being potentially like a stub page is interesting, but fail to see where that actually occurs in reality - usually it can be up to 5 or 7 years incomplete and never looked at. I am the first one to admit surprise when I re-visit tags that I had done 5 to 8 years ago that I had not completely fixed or really didnt have the right mixes. Pity so few eds are interested, either gone, retired, or lost interest, so on that basis - it is good that someone even gets as far as you have - soldier on! University of Mainz versus Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz

[edit]

You moved the category and re-categorised lots of people. The problem is that the University of Mainz existed from 1477 to 1800ish and the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz was only opened in 1946. For someone like Andreas Joseph Hofmann, Category:Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz alumni is just wrong, as he died almost a hundred years before that university was created. I think that you should either undo your move or split the category into one for the old university and one for the new university. What do you think? —Kusma (t·c) 19:24, 20 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

(watching:) many universities changed names often, - it may be fair to just use the generic University of Xtown (or: Xtown university) which will be correct for most. Next problem: Folkwang Hochschule - now a university - had four or five names, but only for the last few years was a university, - the category is wrong for most people. What can we do? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:41, 20 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Kusma, thanks for raising this. I'd suggest splitting them, making Category:University of Mainz alumni a subcategory and assign it to Andreas Joseph Hofmann and others that graduated pre re-opening (I've seen examples of this elsewhere). Both categories would just need to clear description outlining this criteria. Happy to organise that if this is what is decided. Jevansen (talk) 22:03, 20 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jevansen, I think that for Mainz, where the old university and the new university can be cleanly separated (anyone born after 1810 belongs to the new university, anyone who died before 1945 belongs to the old university, and there is an argument to be made that the old and new universities are truly separate, although people like to pretend there is some continuity), this can work, although we'll end up with a lot of slightly mis-categorised people (editors will naively put a "University of Mainz alumni" on people who recently graduated). In general, I would support the simplest unambiguous name, so I'd probably be happiest with just a single category for "University of Mainz alumni". Looking through Category:Alumni by university or college in Germany, it seems we mostly use the full name only if there is any ambiguity (and then we use the full modern name instead of sorting previous historical names; for example we claim Karl Marx for the HU Berlin, which is slightly anachronistic as the (then only) University of Berlin wasn't named after Humboldt until 1945, but at least this is the correct one of the three universities of modern Berlin). That avoids problems with universities changing names in most cases, and nobody cares whether someone graduated from University of Leipzig or from Karl Marx University, Leipzig. I think Gerda is right -- the generic name is usually best. Also for Mainz, the common name of the University is "University of Mainz", not "Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz", so one could actually argue that the article is not currently titled properly. —Kusma (t·c) 08:20, 21 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting. Having also thought about it some more, whether or not there is continuity, we have a single article for "both" universities so they should probably then be treated as the same in the category tree, meaning the one alumni category. While the article remains named as it is we should keep the topic category as Category:Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, but I'll move back the alumni and faculty categories to "University of Mainz". Does that sound ok? Jevansen (talk) 10:09, 21 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps we should not discuss it just among the three of us, - is there any project responsible? My expert for all category-related questions is Ser Amantio di Nicolao. I'd prefer to have categories for place, faculty and alumni the same, and broad and simple, not one specific name which is the current name but can change tomorrow once a university is named after someone to be honoured. A category article should of course reflect the possibly different names such an institution has had. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:30, 21 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
More input would certainly be nice. The Germany project standards WP:GERCON don't say anything about categories, but they do support University of Mainz. The page has been moved a couple of times, it is probably time to settle this via WP:RM. —Kusma (t·c) 19:38, 21 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jevansen, thanks for adding a talk page for the 2007 South Pacific Games logo. The article to which it belongs seems to have been incorrectly renamed some years ago. Transportation breakdown in East Africa (Bollore logistics)

[edit]

Greetings I am here to report the misconduct of transportation management in East Africa especially Uganda. Bollore Logistics is a leading African clearing and forwarding company that clears almost 90% of the goods imported in Africa and 70% of the Cargo exported out of Africa. So in this case Bollore has a lot of cargo to transport and this should be a profit to the company, but it's very unfortunate that the people in transport management chose to freeze Bollore trucks from carrying cargo and they give the cargo to private transporters. Mr. Anthony Small the operations manager Uganda / Southern Sudan is the man trying to breakdown transport and logistics in Bollore so that he can benefit from hired transporters. Unfortunately he informs our superiors in France that transport in Bollore doesn't work, but this all a lie, he is creating away to make his own money out of transport by hiring cheap transporters. This is my personal email address ltalemwa03@gmail.com and i am writing to notify our superiors about the situation in transport section in East Africa. For any further information in regards to this information, please I am available on this and my mobile number (+254-780-726-756). Thank you very much Bishop kenana (talk) 10:36, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

sheesh, if youre gonna remove all the queensland qualifiers in the queensland project (nsw etc) - just as everyone disappears, you might find that there are some who do not buy into the issue - the whole austrylian project has a very schizoid determination of qualifiers - there are a few eds left on the project, and active even less - there have been arguments in the time that you and I have been on - the current wacthers and inhabitatns of the australian noticeboard may or may not be au fait with the earlier arguments... sheesh, it is like watching the disappearing portals - no one turns up to even make comment. BY rough average - if you look into the places project - I would say less than 20% at a guess have the lone erections to unqualified names - woopwoop - etc - consistency, as a bulk edit person as such might have an appreciation of - does not sit well with some states... surely there is something better to do than follow the fantasies of the low edit single name eds of ten years ago. whatever, have a good one regardless. JarrahTree 09:57, 20 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hey again JT. I have no interest in removing all qualifiers, just the few topic categories which aren't in line with the place's article name. Basic rules of categorisation surely override the preference of the project (given in this case the category trees are already inconsistent as you've said), so happy to answer to any lynch mob. Pretty much done now anyway. Jevansen (talk) 12:28, 20 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Categories for sportspeople

[edit]

Hi, I see you've done edits in the past concerning sporting categories and wanted to ask for your help / advice in combatting some potential problems in this area.

I've been tracking vandalism from IP users in the range of addresses 80.233.32.x-80.233.47.x. Most of this has been childish (and offensive) nonsense but I've just found what seems like a longer-term effort of more subtle changes, including adding ever more specific categories to sportspeople and actors.

An example is Navid Niktash who is now the sole member of the categories French expatriate basketball people in Sweden, Iranian expatriate basketball people in Sweden and Iranian expatriate basketball people in France. A list of edits which are mostly of this type from one particular IP is Special:Contributions/80.233.37.88, but I stress that this is non-exhaustive. I do not know yet how may articles are affected or how long this has been going on. In many case, subsequent edits have been made to articles and so the bad edits cannot simply be rolled back. I have little familiarity with most sporting categories, so it isn't always obvious to me which categories should be deleted and which kept.

FYI, I have made a Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Incidents#Persistent_vandalism_from_a_range_of_IPs report at ANI about the ongoing problem. Any help appreciated. Thanks. FrankP (talk) 18:28, 13 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Frank. I've had a look at all of the sportspeople edits of the particular IP you listed. The category edits seem well intentioned, it's more of a competency issue. They're diffusing categories without checking whether such a category even exists and as a result around half of their categories changes have resulted in redlinked categories. These have all been reverted by various editors. In the case of Navid Niktash, a user ended up creating the two categories instead, which is why he is the only one populated. He does meet the criteria for inclusion in both.
Assuming all the sporting categories edits across their other IP addresses are of the same manner, I wouldn't worry too much. Based on the IP provided, editors were quick to fix such edits and in the worst case scenario there may be a handful of redlinked categories about the place. Jevansen (talk) 07:16, 14 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category moves

[edit]

Please can you not just move categories invoking the speedy criteria without first listing them at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Speedy. Arbitrary category moves often leave articles behind, hence they get reverted to the status quo ante. Timrollpickering (Talk) 14:26, 15 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Tim, thank you for your message. My understanding was that categories can be moved manually, provided all post-move cleanup is completed?
I'm unsure what you are referring to about leaving articles behind, as I always ensure every page has been moved across to the new category name. It's possible you saw some instances where someone added an article to an old name after this was done? I regularly check Category:Wikipedia non-empty soft redirected categories and assisted yesterday with mass cleanup which was required after a WikiProject made a change to their category structure, which left many pages/templates requiring updating.
I only make moves which qualify for the speedy criteria and make this clear in the summary. Ultimately, as these moves are uncontroversial, I believe this saves everyone's time at CfD and prevents a backlog of requests that are only going to get approved. Jevansen (talk) 21:48, 16 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Because of problems with caches and the job queue, Category:Wikipedia non-empty soft redirected categories doesn't always update immediately. Boldly moving often leaves stuff behind and can get in a mess. WP:CFDS is precisely for saving everyone's time with non controversial stuff as the bots can catch it all. The criteria you mention are for proposing speedy changes, not for implementing them directly. Timrollpickering (Talk) 23:56, 16 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'm aware Tim of the delays involved with that category and merely use it as an extra check, as well as to monitor issues relating to other's category moves. Each time I move a category I make sure the right number is now in the new one and refresh the old to ensure it is empty. You reverted three of my category changes claiming in your edit summary that I hadn't moved the contents, but I have gone back over my edit history and can confirm that I had moved the contents over in all those instances. Jayden Okunbor and Corey Harawira-Naera

[edit]

Hiya Jevansen I just have a question that someone with your expert knowledge might know the answer to. I have done some edits for the two players mentioned above regarding their off-field incidents but a new user keeps deleting the edits saying it is slander and libellous despite the fact that I have appropriate references.

If the allegations are proven 100% true and I re-add the information yet it keeps getting removed then what can I do?. This user has already threatened me with the use of lawyers. Sully198787 (talk) 06:20, 19 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sully. Page protection is the best option is this case. If they have any legitimate issues with the content they can bring it up on the talk page, otherwise they're just being disruptive. Legal threats are usually a blockable offence, so you could go down that route if you want, but that's only one of the IPs being used.
I've re-added the content to Jayden Okunbor and requested page protection. Corey Harawira-Naera hasn't had enough activity to warrant such action, it has only had the one removal attempt. Again I re-added the section. The IP was right in their edit summary that "CHN met the girl outside of school", so I've tried to clarify that, but otherwise there is no justification to remove the content.
I'll keep an eye on both articles. Cheers. Jevansen (talk) 07:50, 19 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Jevansen: One of the shows listed for this project, under Broadway Musicals: Show by Show, is Irving Berlin's, "This Is the Army." There is already a long article about the film, which was based on the show. The film article has a nice section dealing with the show. Is it OK if I pull out the section about the show and create an article around it, with a cross-reference? Bob Rjstern (talk) 15:12, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi

[edit]

Hi, first I wanted to thank for your edits, some of these pages are in my watchlist and I know I can trust them but I think there is one simple mistake, this one here. I have 3 separate sources naming the guy as Lee Jin-ho, OCA results (from 2014 AG website), a newspaper from 1990 and also Korean NOC website. they are not easily accessible online, but I can show you screenshots if you want. Mohsen1248 (talk) 17:48, 13 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mohsen. Thanks for letting me know. There seems to be a discrepancy among tennis sources over the spelling of his name, the ATP is usually the most reliable and uses Lee Jin-so, which is why I went with that. However you've obviously got multiple strong sources which use Lee Jin-ho, so I'm satisfied with that. Nice work!. Jevansen (talk) 07:13, 14 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Category:Universiade medalists for Peru requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". Hi BlameRuiner. Sorry for that. Since GS first mentioned it, I randomised the list I was working on at that time so I was tagging non-football articles at the same time to limit any watchlist strain. I'm close to finished on my overall task but unfortunately the last list I'm working through is only footballers and there are still a few to go... but I can spread it out more and do it in smaller chunks. Hi Jevansen, I’ve seen you have created some great tennis profiles... can you please add one for former British tennis pro, Joshua Milton? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:8801:C10D:6100:C56F:C08A:8910:222B (talk) 04:59, 10 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I'll look into it, but it does appear an article on Milton has previously been deleted for not meeting the tennis notability guidelines and a lack of suitable sources. That was in 2011, so it will depend on whether Milton has been the subject of "significant coverage" in sources since then. Jevansen (talk) 05:26, 10 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ok .. so I've created a short bio for Joshua Milton. He doesn't strictly meet our notability guidelines for tennis (ATP Tour/GS main draw or Challenger title), but I'm satisfied there are sufficient sources to meet our general notability guidelines. Like last time someone may still nominate the article for deletion and it will be up to the community to determine whether the article should be kept, but I've referenced the page the best I can through available online sources. Dean/Dani

[edit]

Hi Jevansen, tonight someone changed the references to Dean Laidley to Dani on the North Melbourne page. I wasn't sure of the policy about this, so went looking at other similar cases and saw your name in the Athletics at the 1976 Summer Olympics – Men's decathlon revision history about how to refer to Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner. But WP:GENDERID tends to lean the other way. Is there a clear ruling on this? I saw the Village pump discussion, but it seemed to avoid making any definitive calls in User:Drmies closure. Any idea? Revert? Leave? I think "Use context to determine which name or names to provide on a case-by-case basis" in MOS:GENDERID leans towards reverting to Dean in all the football era articles. The-Pope (talk) 14:06, 25 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Pope. Good to hear from you. You pretty much summed up where we're at. No clear ruling, but following Jenner as an example of how we treat sportspeople who transitioned would seem the most sensible approach.
In the context of Laidley's playing and coaching career, I reckon this is one of the cases where we're ok to use her former name. An option, if it becomes contentious, could always be to introduce a footnote saying subject is now known as Dani etc. That solution has been used in many Jenner articles. On the NM page, after reverting, I'd suggest changing "his resignation" to "their resignation" (or avoid pronouns altogether). Jevansen (talk) 23:52, 25 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hallo, Thank you for creating Karen Smith (tennis) . When you create an article like this with a "disambiguated" title, please make sure that the reader can find it from the basic name (ie Karen Smith ), by adding or expanding a hatnote, or adding the article to a disambiguation page. This helps the reader to find your article, and also reduces the chance of a future careless editor creating a duplicate article with a slightly different disambiguator. I've fixed this one. Thanks, and Happy Editing. PamD 10:47, 12 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hey. The data just doesn't seem to add up. Doubles record is 2-5, but looking at her GS record she won more than two matches. WTA website also does't have her US Claycourt title from 1978. Singles record doesn't seem right either when you tally.[2]. Her record, while not spectacular, would also indicate more than $1,000 in total winnings. With the rankings, her highest for singles is 421 on the WTA website, yet she made the third round at Wimbledon twice, so again doubtful. This source says she was ranked 49th in the world. Hi Jevansen - hope you are well. Are you able to tag your mass-category additions as minor edits? I can then filter them off my watchlist and spot any sneaky IP vandalism that might crop up! Thanks. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 08:15, 20 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

G'day Lugnuts. They should all have been marked as minor, at least that's how it appears on my end. A watchlist bug maybe? I have you mind with this task because I know you would have created the majority of these articles and it's going to kill your watchlist. Another option is to hide "page categorization" perhaps? Jevansen (talk) 09:36, 20 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Haha, ignore me - schoolboy error on my part. Yes, they are indeed minor. Feel free to hit me with a trout round my lugs! Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 09:46, 20 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Boxingfan2020. I added the template you'll see at the top of the bio which will add it to the list of drafts awaiting approval. The template has further details. Sounds like there is quite a backlog! If you wish to make further edits to the page during this time that's no issue. Cheers. Jevansen (talk) 08:48, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Women tennis players

[edit]

Thanks, Jevansen, for all your recent articles on women tennis players. As you probably know, sports are an area where the vast majority of new biographies are about men. It's therefore good to see you have been focusing on women. If you intend to continue along these lines, you might like to become a member of wp:Women in Red where we are trying to chip away at the gender gap. You might be able to inspire others to follow in your footsteps. Keep up the good work!--Ipigott (talk) 10:40, 5 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

New Page request (disambiguation) for Ettore Rossetti

[edit]

Dear Jevansen, Thank you so much for publishing an article on my namesake, Ettore Rossetti from Tuscany, Italy, former professional tennis player. https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Ettore_Rossetti

Since I am also a tennis player and a Guinness World Records title holder in tennis with my identical twin brother, I would like to request a new article to avoid confusion.

The first line in this article currently reads "Not to be confused with American tennis player Ettore Rossetti, a Guinness World Record holder for tennis rallies." (Thank you so much for that reference.)

Would it be possible to publish a new article and hyperlink to it from my name Ettore Rossetti?

By way of background, my identical twin brother and I are 3x Guinness World Records title holders in tennis and now in pickleball, for the Longest pickleball rally and have appeared in Ripley's Believe It or Not! Here are some sources for your reference:

Thank you so much for everything you do to document, publish and share human knowledge. Ettore.rossetti (talk) 05:17, 9 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ettore. I created a new article - Angelo and Ettore Rossetti, linked from your Tuscan namesake. Normally we only have pages on pro players but the feats of you and your brother have received quite a bit of coverage, certainly dominating search results over the other Ettore. Hopefully people will now stop asking you about the time you went to the Australian Open. Jevansen (talk) 08:41, 9 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

RE: New Page request (disambiguation) for Ettore Rossetti

[edit]

Thank you so much, Jevansen. One slight correction and suggestion: Angelo lives in Hamden, CT [3] and Ettore lives in Shelton, CT [4] (they used to work in Weston, CT not live there). Here is an independent verifiable source which is already cited in your footnote #6: [5]

Also, feel free to use a photo(s) from this page as they are cc licensed (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0): [6]. Thank you again for your contributions as a prolific Wikipedian. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ettore.rossetti (talkcontribs) 16:01, 9 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ettore. I made the correction. In terms of the images, you would need to change to a different CC license for us to be able to upload to this site. Please see a list of acceptable CC licenses here. Regards. Jevansen (talk) 18:50, 9 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

RE: New Page request (disambiguation) for Ettore Rossetti

[edit]

Thank you again, Jevansen, you're epic! I changed the CC licenses for most of the photos found here: https://rallyforcharity.org/about-us/ and uploaded this one to Wikimedia Commons for public use but didn't want to add to article because of COI guideline.

The Rossetti Brothers pass the 15K milestone on their way to a new Guinness World Records title for the Longest pickleball rally of 16,046 shots on October 10, 2021 in Rocky Hill, CT.

Thai district categories

[edit]

Thanks for working on the categories, but Category:Amphoe of Nakhon Ratchasima Province should have been renamed to Category:Districts of Nakhon Ratchasima province instead of Category:Amphoe of Nakhon Ratchasima province, per the recent move of the main page (see Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2022 January 21#Category:Amphoe). Error regarding Federal District

[edit]

Hello Jevansen, I'm sorry but I think there is an error in some of your edits, the Category Category:Members of the Legislative Assembly of the Federal District was intended for politicians representing the Federal District (Brazil), not Federal District (Mexico). Some articles of clearly Brazilian politicians such as Erika Kokay and Izalci Lucas have been moved into Category:Members of the Legislative Assembly of Mexico City which is clearly erroneous. I don't know what the solution to such an issue is but I wanted to bring it to your attention. Thank you. Inter&anthro (talk) 15:24, 16 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi User:Inter&anthro. Thanks for pointing this out. Based on the categories on the page, I understand it has always been a category for Mexico's Federal District. I've gone through the category and the two you mentioned are the only Brazil politicians. There is no category for members of the Federal District (Brazil) so it looks like they'd been erroneously placed in the one for Mexico. I have removed the category from both pages. When I look at the 88 top priority articles in Category:Top-importance biography (arts and entertainment) articles, half of them are not "top priority" for A&E in a million years. If no one bothers making the top priority list even slightly realistic (at the moment, it contains a draft, a category, 6 articles on Churchill, Kepler, Borg, Haarsma, ...), then what's the point of tagging others for low priority? Fram (talk) 07:37, 22 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm loving this for the watchlist cleanup. Last year I closed an AfD before I knew about the setting not to watch every page and my watchlist is full of essentially every futstal player. So this tagging puts them on my watchlist and I can now unwatch. (Yes, I know 7000 items doesn't matter if they're not being edited and showing, but it bothers me irrationally to have a large watchlist) Star Mississippi 15:48, 30 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Query

[edit]

Hello, Jevansen,

I have a question for you. One of the tasks I do is tag empty categories for CSD C1 speedy deletion. There is a database report that is generated daily and I also run queries on Quarry to discover categories that are empty. But somehow, in a split second, they go from being empty to you filling them! How do you do that so quickly? I noticed this thing a while ago but it just happened again with Category:Sportspeople from Vitória, Espírito Santo a few minutes ago and so I thought I'd ask. Fastest editor on the project! Liz Read! Talk! 03:33, 13 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Liz. The combination of Cat-a-lot and a script which displays short descriptions in categories, both make light work. I would manually select anyone in Category:People from Vitória, Espírito Santo who has a sports profession as their short description, then on the press of a button Cat-a-lot makes the move for me. Jevansen (talk) 03:43, 13 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello

[edit]

Hello Jevansen,

When making the category "Sportspeople from Foča Region", did you consider to add sportspeople from Rogatica (i.e. Ibrahim Šehić) in that category, since he is the only one uncategorized?

Thanks! 77.221.0.38 (talk) 06:41, 13 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. We've got Category:People from Rogatica categorised under Category:People from Sarajevo-Romanija Region, so as such I'd didn't populate anyone from that category into Category:Sportspeople from Foča Region. Jevansen (talk) 07:03, 13 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

J.G. Ballard

[edit]

I noticed in the history that you just moved Ballard from "Category:People from Surrey" to "Category:Writers from Surrey." Is there a reason (and I'm asking this from an honest place of not knowing and wanting to find out) that he shouldn't be on both lists? Mr Underhill (talk) 13:55, 8 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mr Underhill. Basically we want to be using the most specific category available in the category tree without duplicating any parent categories. Category:Writers from Surrey is a subcategory of Category:People from Surrey (same tree), so the latter becomes redundant. Jevansen (talk) 22:33, 8 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I just noticed that you had responded to me! Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. Mr Underhill (talk) 02:25, 7 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Peter Fishbach Record

[edit]

Hi Jevansen, Could you respond to this on the Peter Fishbach bio? Thanks. It seems strange to rely solely on the incomplete ATP records which apparently are extremely incomplete for the pre-1968 era, which means that about 90 years of tennis achievement are excluded from consideration. I think that the pre-1968 ATP records include only the four Grand Slam tournaments, as if the tennis players before 1968 did not compete anywhere except in the Grand Slam events. I would suggest that tennis tournaments prior to 1968 which were officially sanctioned by a representative tennis body such as the ITF or the USLTA should be included in the official tournament count. Is that not already our policy on these tennis bios? Tennisedu (talk) 05:10, 13 August 2023 (UTC) Tennisedu (talk) 05:18, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hey. My concern was that the data you're adding was not cited to a reliable source, so reverted to official numbers. Where are you getting your w-l records from and is the source reliable? (I have no issue with including this otherwise). Jevansen (talk) 05:27, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Prokos, Andrew

[edit]

I noticed that you removed this artist from two categories Category:Photographers from New York (state) and Category:Artists from New York City. This artist lives and works in New York for at least 25 years according to his bio. He is predominantly known for his cityscapes and architectural photography of New York for the last quarter century. The NYC address is publicly available in google business, google local etc. Why remove an artist whose body of work directly relates to New York? I noticed that Prokos's Wiki page doesn't mention much about where the artist currently lives and works so perhaps that needs to be added there. Thanks! Larantes (talk) 01:53, 17 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Larantes. Andrew has Category:Photographers from New York City, which is a subcategory of both Category:Photographers from New York (state) and Category:Artists from New York City, so I removed the latter two. Please see WP:SUBCAT for the relevant guideline. Jevansen (talk) 02:04, 17 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ahh I see, got it thanks! Prokos is also being included in Negative (photography) but the website cannot be cited because it appears to be blacklisted. Could you request removal from the blacklist? It appears that a trusted high-volume editor has to request it for it to be considered. Larantes (talk) 02:32, 17 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Are you trying to cite the Wikipedia url on Negative (photography) or the photoawards.com article relating to Andrew? Jevansen (talk) 02:44, 17 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I am referring to the Wikipedia article on Negative photography, not the Prokos bio page on Wikipedia. The editor cited the photoawards page...I suspect because they couldn't cite the actual series page, which is found at andrewprokos.com/photos/inverted-uae-series/. I can't give you the full link as the main domain seems to be blacklisted. Larantes (talk) 02:56, 17 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like the andrewprokos.com site was spammed across the site several years ago ([7]). Any request to have the website removed from the blacklist will be judged on its merits, the user's experience/edit count has no bearing. Jevansen (talk) 03:20, 17 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I saw that, but it looks like was 16 years ago so I doubt the problem persists. The blacklist page says that requests from editors with significant edit history are considered...anyone can make a request, but it will probably just be denied. It's not super important but just a pain that citations can't be added as this photographer is well known for his negative image work. Thanks again! Query

[edit]

Hello, Jevansen,

I just have to ask you one thing that has me completely mystified. I do queries for empty categories so I can tag them. But, very often, a category that has shown up as empty is INSTANTLY filled by you in the minute between the time it shows up in the query list and the time it takes to look at at the category. I mean, how to you categorize a dozen or so articles into a category in the course of a minute? What mass-editing tool do you use or do you just have a lot of tabs open and have fast fingers? It's remarkable. Liz Read! Talk! 08:53, 26 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Liz. I have a script installed which displays short descriptions in categories (see link for example image). I can then easily identify an article which meets the criteria, say a footballer, and use the Cat-a-lot tool to switch them to the new category, moving them in bulk with the click of a button. Hi, why are you removing categories like Footballers from the Canary Islands? Could you cite the Wikipedia policy if your edits are based on? OscarL 12:50, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Oscar. Category:Spanish footballers by autonomous community have been diffused into Category:Footballers in Spain by province. Jevansen (talk) 00:28, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Category:Cricketers from the London Borough of Wandsworth indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. Liz Read! Talk! 02:36, 18 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Leigh Halfpenny has Category:RC Toulon players so would be a expatriate player in France). Jevansen (talk) 07:25, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And those categories are incorrect. This is why I asked you to be careful. Halfpenny is playing for the Crusaders, as is Sanders. Primefac (talk) 07:28, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So I think we disagree on the intention of the category. I'd interpret Category:Expatriate rugby union players in France as foreign players who resided in France to play rugby, at any point in their careers. Jevansen (talk) 07:33, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Needs to be a better category name, then. This is also why I rarely want to deal with category issues. Primefac (talk) 07:35, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Primefac that this category is very confusing. I came here to post a similar comment. You have added Category:New Zealand expatriate rugby union players to so many biographies of players who at some point were playing overseas but have returned to play in New Zealand and aren't expatriates anymore (or have retired and gone home) and I assume you've done the same with players from other countries who have returned home. I don't think this category (name) is helpful at all. Please, consider giving it a better name. I haven't thought about an alternative name for very long, but it could be something like "Category:New Zealand rugby union players who have played overseas" (or "Rugby union players who have played in France" etc) if it's a NZ player who has played overseas in the past (or a player who has played in a specific country in the past). Category:New Zealand expatriate rugby union players could then be reserved exclusively for players who are currently playing overseas (or in a specified country). Ruggalicious (talk) 02:00, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Ruggalicious. I understand the issue around the name. A renaming isn't something I can do unilaterally, it would have to be discussed at CFD and concerns the entire category tree (Category:Expatriates by country of residence). Jevansen (talk) 02:08, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your reply Jevansen. Having thought about it longer, I think a category that relates to something that is current at one point in time is problematic anyway, because it's a situation that can easily change and it would amount to a lot of work to keep player biographies in that category up-to-date (e.g., moving them in and out of expatriate categories when players move). So you could never limit an expatriate category to people who are current expats only as I suggested earlier. I guess there's not much we can do about the expatriate category being confusing (because it includes people who are no longer expats or have moved out of a specific country), but – realistically – not many visitors to these pages will even notice categories under articles anyway and it will mostly be editors who are bothered by it. Hello, Jevansen,
Sorry to post these notices to you when you do so much work creating and filling categories. But we have lists of empty categories and tagging them is just part of the process. It's perfectly fine to remove the tag whenever they are no longer empty. Thanks for all of the work you do. Liz Read! Talk! 08:48, 8 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I noticed that you have added Czech municipalities to WP Cities en masse. May I ask about the key and why some were added and some were not? Is it possible to add the remaining ones in bulk? FromCzech (talk) 06:36, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ok. Upon closer examination, I discovered that town and market towns, municipalities that are not Stub and that have other content on Talkpage than banner shell, have not yet been tagged. academic journal editors by nationality categories

[edit]

Hi, just a few remarks: a very large proportion of "academic journal editors" don't belong in that category, but in "scientific journal editors" or in any one of the field-specific categories in Category:Academic journal editors by field. Second, by its nature, almost all of these editors are academics. They move a lot. Have a look at Graham Lees (just a random click, not the most notable of editors). Although English by birth, he worked in France, the Netherlands, United States, and lastly in Finland. Most of his work as an editor of TSWJ was done in Finland. So in what country category should he be placed? Jan Bruell was Polish born, but edited while living in the US. He get categorized "American editor", not "Polish editor", so why is Lees categorized according to country of birth? Frankly, I think that all these nationality-based cats just open a can of worms. It's much more useful to categorize people according to their field, which usually is quite unambiguous and tells you more about a person than the country where he happened to be born or worked. --Randykitty (talk) 15:34, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Randy, thanks for the feedback. I won't diffuse this category any more pending further comment/approval.
Although they weren't labelled as such, I was working under the assumption that categories like Category:Scientific journal editors were intended to be non-diffusing subcategories of Category:Academic journal editors, given how many were still categorised in the latter. As such I thought it would be best to diffuse by nationality, consistent with existing categories schemes which have academic types broken down by nationality down to their disciplines/subfields etc.
I understand what you're saying about the difficulties of this in terms of academics. To your examples, Jan Bruell has American nationality per his infobox, there's no indication in the article he hold dual nationality, while Graham Lees has the short description "British publisher", although I acknowledge his nationality isn't mentioned elsewhere in the article (nor was he categorised as such).
Cheers. Jevansen (talk) 03:33, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Expatriates

[edit]

I was wondering about the definition of " expatriate", and whether someone who say spends a couple of months in India to play in the IPL really qualifies. I just looked the word up, and my dictionary says it's someone who lives abroad, "especially for a long period". JH (talk page) 08:48, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You could definitely make that argument. We define an expatriate as a "person who temporarily resides outside their country of citizenship", so a two-month IPL stint would seem to fit. But it's certainly open to interpretation. Jevansen (talk) 09:18, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category removals

[edit]

Hi User:Jevansen, I see you spend a lot of time deleting and creating categories. I don't care in areas that don't concern me (such as your many recent edits in sportspeople categories) but I do care about the entries I feel a certain responsibility for. That includes Irish composers, for example. On 12 April, you deleted the category "Irish classical composers" from some six or seven composer articles. Thankfully, the category is still there. I will now reconstitute that category for those names where you deleted it. But tell me, WHY do you do this, and what gives you the right to make such changes without prenotification or discussion? I want you to stop this activity, at least when it comes to (Irish) composers. Aklein62 (talk) 08:28, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I am following the guidelines outlined at WP:DIFFUSE and WP:SUBCAT. Jevansen (talk) 08:53, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well, then please don't in the case of Irish composers. I think there is a lot of sense in having a category called "Irish classical composers" and not having to piece it together from various subcats according to genre, period, gender, etc. I remember there was a similarly industrious WP editor some time ago who actually created all those subcats that you are now deleting. They may all make sense to different people, but there should be an overall category also. Thanks. Aklein62 (talk) 10:20, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Jevansen,

I just noticed that this category was emptied and tagged for CSD C1 speedy deletion which, as you know, is not speedy but actually takes place a week from now if the category is still empty. You should have received a notification about this but I noticed you haven't so I'm leaving this one for you. Happy editing! Liz Read! Talk! 20:12, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Expat volley players

[edit]

Hi! I dont really understand the logic behind some categorie changes. Example, why remove "cat:Estonian expatriate volleyball players" [8] when there's only 1 subcat the person is added in (France). So now all players who have played in France have been removed from the parent category. What about the other countries the players have played in? Until there is a category for each of the country the player has played, i don't think the parent should be removed. Pelmeen10 (talk) 13:52, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Architect David Carnivale

[edit]

Dear Mr. Deyro,

This is Architect Dave Carnivale; someone notified me that my Wikipedia page (which I've been proud to have for many years) has been suggested by someone to be deleted. I write to you because I've tried but cannot find out how to "join the discussion" and hope you will be kind enough to add my comments for me.Sounding immodest cannot be helped in listing why I should remain, forgive me. First, being the first architect in the world to have a website (affordablehouse.com) which made its debut March 15, 1996, and that at the time having been the second book anywhere on Earth printed cover-to-cover on the internet (the site was simplified and revised around 2022 after having been "on the air" so-to-speak for a quarter century is enough to warrant my page. Remember, in 1996 only 25k-30k websites were functioning at all; another 75k simply said "Under Construction."Secondly, in an 8 year federal case, pro se, which went to the del. District Court ('Carnivale v. Staub' Civ.No.08-764-SLR), the Federal Circuit (Appeal from the U.S.Patent and Trademark Office,Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, in No. 92047553 'Staub v. Carnivale) and the Third Circuit (Civil Action 1:08-cv-00764-SLR) I brought trademark law, specifically the 1948 Lanham Act regarding trademark protections into the computer age. The case is now cited throughout the country and established that tiny alterations in domain names is insufficient to protect against claims of trademark infringement. In turning to my page I see a few inaccuracies which have crept in over the years; my projects now number more than 700 across the U.S. (not 500) and my book is now self published rather than published by BookSurge. Having practiced for neary a half century (not quite but getting close) and having won nearly every preservation award there is in N.Y.C. (I am a very traditional architect with a strong interest in preserving historic architecture) I am not unknown and am, as much an architect as those listed under 'American Architects' - and on Staten Island, a place of 500,000 people, I can say that I am fairly well known.I do not know why someone moved me from "People from Staten Island" to "Artists from Staten Island"- that is inaccurate in that I am an architect, a retired college professor, a preservationist and an author - and architects, while they should be artistic, are part historians, part engineers, part mathematicians and part businessmen too- putting me in the 'artists' category is simply less accurate, if not inaccurate. I see someone called my page a "Puff Piece" which does not reflect I was the first pioneer of a major profession on the internet, and, acting pro se for 8 years in federal court, I altered trademark law regarding the internet. For these reasons, I ask that you might ne kind enough to enter my comments into the discussion for me, since I haven't been able to figure out how to do that. I may send this same message to another editor or two, but you are the first I've contacted....I thank you in advance, Sincerely yours, David Carnivale 2603:7000:6E3B:C199:B1A5:F394:7F02:6A17 (talk) 03:06, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Expatriate golfers

[edit]

You created and populated several categories for expatriate golfers in the US based solely on whether or not they attended college in the US. Given that expatriate states that "Students who study in another country may or may not be referred to as expatriates", I feel that categorizing golfers who only lived in the US while attending college as expats is tenuous. As a US resident, I've never heard of athletes from foreign countries referred to as expats. That is why I removed many of the golfers from the categories you created. Stub templates

[edit]

Please, stop removing blank lines before stub template, as per WP:STUBSPACING: "Leave two blank lines between the first stub template and whatever precedes it.". CLalgo (talk) 12:47, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I am aware of this. This is done automatically by the Cat-a-lot gadget. I've raised the issue previously but am yet to get a resolution. Regards. Jevansen (talk) 12:52, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So please, manually restore those lines. Don't leave it for other editors to do. CLalgo (talk) 12:57, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I can make this a task to complete when I'm finished running through these articles. Many of these are going to be soon edited again (using the tool) so it would be counterproductive to do it now as the changes would then be reversed. Jevansen (talk) 08:15, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
We don't use a Crystal ball. Please don't leave things like this on articles in hope that someone will clean up after you in the future. CLalgo (talk) 08:21, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
To clarify, I mean I personally will be editing these articles again soon, as part of my process. Any attempt to remedy this now would end up with someone else complaining for flooding their watchlist with a pointless task. I can manually review any Judo related articles more promptly if it really bothers you, but beyond that I don't know what to offer you. Jevansen (talk) 08:34, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That would be nice, as my watchlist is currently flooded with this problem you were asked 3 days ago to stop creating. CLalgo (talk) 08:53, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok they're now fixed. Jevansen (talk) 09:21, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Jevansen: I ask again: Please stop removing blank lines before stub templates. CLalgo (talk) 11:53, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

We've been through this. It's an issue with the Cat-a-Lot tool. Will keep happening. Not a big deal. User:Tom.Reding regularly does WP:STUBSPACING fixes through AWB to take care of this. Jevansen (talk) 20:10, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

21st-century African-American military personnel

[edit]

I noticed that you have added Category:21st-century African-American military personnel to multiple articles on Tuskegee Airmen. I'm not sure that category is appropriate as it implies that they were military personnel in the 21st century, despite most of them having been retired for half a century by that time. I think such categories would be much better used for military personnel who were active during their respective centuries. What are your thoughts? - ZLEA T\C 07:05, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Trove ref titles linking through miscapitalized redirects

[edit]

I notice you sometimes add references, probably from Trove, with links such as Newcastle Morning Herald And Miners' Advocate through over-capitalized redirects, as in this edit and in this edit. Should be lowercase and as in Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners' Advocate. You can find more such things via the report WP:Database reports/Linked miscapitalizations. I have a hard time keeping up with that, so if you could help by cleaning up some of those, or by being careful to not put overcapped Trove refs in the fist place, that would be much appreciated. dual and triple premiership players

[edit]

Hey, mind taking a look at the list here and here? These are all templates of dual and triple premiership players. Can these be replaced like what was done with Template:1904/05 Fitzroy dual premiership players? Do you know if there are even more of these that I missed? Gonnym (talk) 10:40, 17 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Gonnym. Search also ""triple premiership players" for several further templates. Template:1955–57 1959–60 Melbourne premiership players, Template:1927–30 Collingwood premiership players and Template:1986/88/89/91 Hawthorn premiership players are others not otherwise captured. Most of these likely aren't even in use anymore. The two I checked (2013/14/15 Hawthorn & 1951/52 Geelong) aren't on any pages and have already been separated. Every one of these will have existing individual year templates they can be replaced with, like the Fitzroy solution. Jevansen (talk) 10:53, 17 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to participate in a research

[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Printmakers

[edit]

Are you sure you know what you are doing with these category edits? Engraving is just one printmaking technique among many, and actually not much practiced in the 20th century - etching & lithography being far more common. People like Stanley William Hayter are much better described as printmakers, & this category should not be removed. Johnbod (talk) 05:06, 8 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi John. Hayter was already populated in Category:20th-century engravers, I just diffused it by nationality. Any engraving categories fall within printmaking so I removed the parent cat per usual procedure. I've added back Category:20th-century British printmakers nonetheless as I take your point that this is what he was primarily known for. Jevansen (talk) 05:29, 8 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Galina Ustvolskaya

Hi. This was removed per WP:SUBCAT and WP:DIFFUSE. She was already populated in Category:Soviet classical composers. Jevansen (talk) 20:09, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Record producers

[edit]

Hi, why did you remove Category:English record producers from a load of musicians who are, English record producers? This must be undone. Or are you in the process of creating subcategories? Hiddenstranger (talk) 10:04, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey. This is due to them having Category:English remixers (Category:Remixers being a subcategory of Category:Record producers). Jevansen (talk) 10:07, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I noticed that you added Category:English remixers under Category:English record producers. That shouldn't be the case though. Remixing existing tracks and producing new original music are two very different things. One of the main professions of these artists is producing new music. Remixing is just another commissioned job they do. Therefore, they should all still remain under Category:English record producers. Hiddenstranger (talk) 10:21, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. I was just following the category structure that was already in place. I'll update the other categories too (to remove record producers as a parent cat). Jevansen (talk) 10:26, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I see you're undoing those edits. Thanks. Hiddenstranger (talk) 10:36, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Category:21st-century Japanese singer-songwriters indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. Hello, Jevansen,

Usually, you are amazing in that you fill empty categories as soon as they are created but a lot of these Storting categories showed up as Empty Categories on my Quarry query. Just reminding you of them in case you have moved on to other category creation. Thanks for all of your contributions to the project! Liz Read! Talk! 23:35, 23 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Still working through, will make sure to add at least one to each category to start with, but this will be a slower process. Not every one of these parliamentary periods are supported by an existing list, so a read of individual articles is required in some cases. Thanks.

Consolidating mass category changes

[edit]

Just to pick a few names in my watch list, Kenneth LeFevre, Louis F. Kosco, LeRoy J. Jones Jr., Anthony Impreveduto, Arline Friscia and Marion Crecco have all had categories updated five or six times each over just the past few days, almost entirely taking over my watch list. It would not have taken much effort to reduce the number of edits by combining the obvious sets of edits together, which would simplify the lives of all those individuals who watch these articles across the state and the nation. Can I ask that more effort be made to increase the amount of time planning the edits to reduce their impact on other editors? Alansohn (talk) 21:55, 8 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I would if it were possible. The automated tool I use can only add/remove one category at a time. Even though it takes double the amount of time, what I could do is make more use of AWB where practical, as these edits can be marked as minor. Cheers. Year of death missing

[edit]

Hi! Just saw that you marked John A. Tibbits with Category:Year of death missing, but it's written in the article as 1893 - I've removed it for now. Is there something I should do to prevent this from happening in the future, or some additional step I need to take with the Tibbits article? Thanks! Staraction (talk | contribs) 05:19, 21 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey. He just hadn't been populated with Category:1893 deaths, that's why the category was added (even though his death year wasn't strictly "missing"). I didn't review each individual article, rather added the category on mass to any 18th/19th-century U.S. politician without a death category. This helps identify articles like Tibbits that need to be populated with a year of death. In some cases the information may already be in the article, but most of the time further research would be required. I've updated the article with his birth year and death year categories. Thanks for picking this up. Jevansen (talk) 05:33, 21 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. Hey, not sure if you saw, but I responded to your VPT question (the part about marking the edits minor by default at least). – 2804:F1...26:F77C (::/32) (talk) 20:59, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, forgot about this. I've responded in the thread. Am grateful for your assistance. Jevansen (talk) 21:04, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm tempted to remove all my comments (if you agree anyways) and let other people have a go at answering... it was intentionally not marked as minor in the script you imported (I said this at VPT too), because of a request to the author of the script to set it to false, the justification being that adding and removing categories is not a minor edit...
Should I remove all of those responses? Pretty sure people would be more likely to respond the other parts if all my pointless text wasn't there.

Not at all, it was useful to rule that out. The solution made total sense .. beyond me why it wouldn't work. Cheers. Jevansen (talk) 21:52, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
