Collingwood Players

[edit]

Very comprehensive, but gee they have a lot of common names! The-Pope (talk) 12:50, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Bloody early 20th century ... if only they called their kids names like Steele Sidebottom we'd be fine! Don't worry, I'll get to it. Jevansen (talk) 12:55, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Chess player, footballer, or both?

[edit]

Hi there, I was wondering if you could explain to me what's going on with Charles G. M. Watson? When you created the article you wrote it as if the chess player and Melbourne footballer were the same person, but then when a user claiming to be a family member removed all the stuff about the football career saying that he never played football, you just seemed to go along with it. So is Charles G. M. Watson the Bert Watson who played for the dees or are they two seperate people? Jenks24 (talk) 12:16, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The Encyclopedia Of AFL Footballers said they were the same person but it wouldn't be the first time they have made an error, so unless I can locate another reference which ties the "two" together I'm not confident enough to revert the article back to my version. As a Demons fan, I don't suppose you have an literature which mentions him? Jevansen (talk) 12:31, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately my Demons literature is fairly limited. However, I did find that he was named "H. Watson" which also leads me to believe they are two seperate people and that The Encyclopedia Of AFL Footballers is wrong. Also did a google search and search through trove nla and couldn't find anything to link them, so unfortunately a new article will be needed someday :( Jenks24 (talk) 16:44, 16 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Cats questions

[edit]

Hey there, I see you've started with changing to the subcats of Category:Australian players of Australian rules football (good work, both for the ideas and the effort). Anyway, two questions: 1) For someone like David Neitz who was born in Tasmania but played for the Vics in State of Origin, which cat should he go in? and 2) Is there a reason that Category:Australian rules footballers from the Northern Territory is a redlink? Cheers, Jenks24 (talk) 06:33, 24 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sock?

What do think of this? I think it's yet another sock of User:BrianBeahr, but thought you may know better than I. Cheers, Jenks24 (talk) 16:43, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah mate it's him, no doubt. He hasn't quite mastered the art of socking. Tends to always give himself away after his first three edits. Uploaded a non-free image as well. Sigh...

It would have been nice for you to do this, but not COPYING (which is bad) but reverting and moving (which maintains article history and attribution). Read the article history properly before you start lecturing on MOS.The-Pope (talk) 23:29, 16 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Footballers & Cricketers

[edit]

Hi Jevansen,

If it's a list of cricket and football players I don't see any justification for relegating one player to footnote/'see also' status just because they happen to be female.

Obviously female footballers are held to the same lofty "notability" standards on wikipedia, so I'm not sure they should be subject to overt discrimination on player lists etc.

Perhaps you could clarify?

Cheers, Clavdia chauchat (talk) 00:48, 27 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox

[edit]

Yeah, thanks for asking because the exact same thing has happened to me. I noticed sometime today (it's not just on Grgic's article, but all articles with template:infobox afl player NEW), but after checking the infobox's history I also assumed it was something to do with my browser. Seeing as you have the exact same problem I guess it must mean that it's not my computer/browser, but something to do with the site. Not really sure who we should ask about this though.... Jenks24 (talk) 14:59, 28 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Don't know about you, but I'm afraid this sort of intricate template stuff flies right over my head. Yeah I saw that the guys who developed the templates we have aren't really active anymore, so I'm not really sure who we could ask to fix it either. Perhaps we could ask at WP:VPT (but I'm not really sure if that is a place to do requests)? Or even at WT:AFL or WP:AWNB to see if anyone there is any good with templates? Jenks24 (talk) 15:40, 28 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wendy is in the AFL Articles list because the Lions are thinking of using her at full-forward now that they've lost Fev! Seriously, she and others like Barry Humphries are there because they won the Anti-Football League award, and that cat is a subcat in the Aussie Rules cat tree. I've noticed it before, but haven't been bothered enough to do anything about it. Cheers The-Pope (talk) 09:45, 17 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hierarchical categories

[edit]

Regarding Just because he played for South Australia doesn't mean he has to be Australian, so nationality category is still useful

I assumed that Category:South Australia cricketers would be a sub-category of Category:Australian cricketers, and hence you wouldn't put him in both. I have to admit surprise that they are unconnected! Given that they are unconnected, then yes, I agree, he should be in both.

Have you any idea why they are unconnected? Pdfpdf (talk) 08:29, 18 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Viv Richards, Kieron Pollard and Umar Gul's cats might give you a clue!. There is a subtle difference between "Fooian cricketers" and "Foo cricketers". If you are an Australian who plays cricket you should be in Category:Australian cricketers. (slightly offtopic - should this be dispersed into states?) If you play for an Australian team then you'll be in the Category:South Australia cricketers (note it is South Australia, not Australian). We had the same issue, to a much lesser extent, in the AFL - just because you play football for a WA club doesn't make you West Australian, or even Australian! It can be a problem in that if you ever do a recursive people cat scan (ie everyone under the tree Category:Australian people), you can either miss out a lot (if you don't have a Fooian cricketers cat, that is based on nationality, not team) or include a lot of incorrect people (if you do put the team based cats under the Australian cricketers umbrella). Cats are fun!The-Pope (talk) 08:50, 18 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Quietly put the stick down and back away and leave them to it. Maybe they won't notice I was here. Pdfpdf (talk) 11:08, 18 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please tick the box!

[edit]

As it seems like you have a few thousand more of these changes to do, can you please mark then as minor, so that my watchlists aren't flooded! Between Jenks' TAC cup allocations and now this, the vandalism is getting hidden! Cheers, The-Pope (talk) 15:53, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No worries, I'll do that from now on. Jevansen (talk) 06:03, 24 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion request

[edit]

Hey there, just wondering if you could slap a {{db-self}} tag on Bert Watson so it becomes a redlink again, as we established above that he's probably not the same guy as the chess player. It's quicker if you this rather than taking it through the RfD process which is pretty backlogged. Cheers, Jenks24 (talk) 18:36, 20 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No probs, I've tagged the Bert Watson page. Jevansen (talk) 07:04, 21 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

AWB and Pentagon

[edit]

Just so you're aware, your recent AWB changes involving the Pentagon have produced the following text in articles:

the [[The Pentagon|Pentagon]]

They're minor and probably don't need fixing, but I wanted you to be aware this was occurring. Wikiacc () 17:03, 7 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Jevansen (talk) 23:43, 7 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there, when you did that big run recategorising players by state, you categorised Henry Alder as from Victoria. The original club in the infobox is Beverley Football Club from WA, so I changed the cat to say he was from WA. Thought you might want to know and if I've misunderstood something, feel free to change it back. Cheers, Jenks24 (talk) 21:45, 15 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ah yep, right you are. I've changed it back to from Victoria and added the newspaper article as a ref. Thanks for clarifying, Jenks24 (talk) 02:17, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Les Miserables query response

[edit]

Hey. I think it's a problem on your end. No matter how I type Les Miserables, I still get the same page with the same edits. I've got three edits from you on the 18th and this one from an hour ago. Have you made any other recent edits?

I did notice your initial post to my talk page, but five minutes later it was removed by the same IP. Is this a shared IP address? Jevansen (talk) 03:52, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, the IP is shared, and so is this one. I made the edits myself. Also, if you check your viewing history, I deleted them a few times to prevent your page from getting damaged (at least on my end). I hope everything is okay with Wikipedia. 70.25.99.236 (talk) 04:03, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'll try to explain the situation as best as I can.
On 17 May 2011, I made five edits to the Les Misérables page under the library IP 205.189.194.208. I cannot recall whether they got through the first time (I believe they got rejected the first time or it took a while to save) but according to the page's history, they got through. On May 18th, I did three edits (as you described above) under 170.170.59.138. From what I recall, they also had problems or took a while to save, but once again according to the history, they got through. Now, if I type the URL with the accent and no underscore(Les Misérables), it shows the updated page, but when I type the title without the accent (Les_Miserables), it shows a previous version. I also type it with the accent and underscore (Les_Misérables) and it shows another earlier version. It's only when I click on "Edit" and then click on "Save Page" that the recent edits show up on all versions of the title ( a null edit). Even just clicking on "Edit" and reading the text on the edit page itself, the updated text is present. But when I delete my cache/browsing history, the "Les_Miserables" and "Les_Misérables" versions goes back to a previous page.
Also on your talk page (this page), when my browsing history is clear (or cleared), the IP 170.170.59.138 on May 20 shows up in your page history, but not the question I posted. It even says at the bottom of the page "This page was last modified on 16 May 2011 at 02:17." Once again, when I click "Edit/View Source" and then click "Save Page" that the page and page history is fully updated, and the correct date and time of modification is stated. As you can see in this page's history, I did delete the question a few times. I even tried another IP (70.25.99.236) and it also gives the same problem.
You should try to clear your browsing history and see if the same thing happens to you. If it does, try the trick that I mentioned above. Would trying other purges help? (http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:Purge)
I really hope what I said here makes sense, and I look forward to your reply. 170.170.59.138 (talk) 05:39, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Mate, I honestly have no idea. I've added a copy of your post here, at our tech help page so hopefully they are able to assist. Cheers. Jevansen (talk) 06:05, 21 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again, Just updating you that the Les Mis page seems to be mostly okay now. It's now your talk page here that is the issue. This page and the page's history are not updating, and the only way I can see the updated version of this page is when I click on the Edit button or purge your page. Tell me, are you still able to see this page in its updated version? Perhaps this might be a regional issue. You may want to let tech support know. All the best. 170.170.59.138 (talk) 14:09, 21 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Update: I see all the posts now, and your history is up to date as well (as of this writing at least). It looks like there's something going on at my end, because everytime I make an edit, it doesn't show up for a few days. Do you know if tech support knows about this?
BTW, thank you very much for your assistance. 170.170.59.138 (talk) 18:24, 21 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
We got the following response from tech, hope it helps - "For 'readers'/google, redirects in wikipedia are not real redirects. They are more like copies of the same content with another title. As such when one article is refreshed in the cache, not necessarily all alternative copies are updated at the same time, often leaving you with entry points where outdated content is presented to IP users". Jevansen (talk) 01:12, 22 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
This has also been happening to your talk page. As of this writing, my "update" post and your post on May 22 still do not show up until I do a purge, and when I delete my browsing history and refresh the page, they disappear again. This should not happen with your page, because you do not have any redirects or other titles. While I noticed the posts should show up on their own in a day or so, it shouldn't be doing that in the first place. If you choose to, delete your web history and refresh this page and see if the same thing happens on your end, just to be sure if its my location that has this issue. 170.170.59.138 (talk) 23:06, 22 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again. Just updating you that Wikipedia left a notice on all the pages that they were fixing a technical issue (which I believe they referred to as a legacy problem). While all my recent posts up to 22 May 2011 at 23:06 show up now, this post still doesn't when I clear the viewing history. Just wanted to let you know, and thank you for your replies and assistance earlier. 170.170.59.138 (talk) 21:22, 24 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Paul O'Brien

[edit]

Hi Jevansen - I've been creating some more AFL player articles using List of Carlton Football Club players as a base. Just got up to Paul O'Brien - there are 3 who have played in the VFL/AFL (born 1948, 1950 and 1961). I was going to create a disambiguation page but there is already a Paul O'Brien article. I was wondering if you could move that page to something like Paul O'Brien (actor) to make room for a disambiguation page. The only reason I haven't done it myself is I'm not entirely sure how to do it without stuffing up all the pages that link to the current article. I know you're a wiz with this sort of thing (after working your magic on Bob Hay), so I thought I'd leave a message here for some help. If you don't have the time to do it, I'll search around for some info and give it a go myself. Thanks! Terlob (talk) 05:34, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hatnote removal question

[edit]

Newbie question: I noticed that you recently removed the Tommy Hampson hatnote on the Thomas Hampson (baritone) article. After reading through the Wikipedia:Hatnote article, it appears that the hatnote complied with section 4.1: Examples of Proper Use > Two articles with similar titles. Could you enlighten me on this topic. Thanks! -- Waldhorn (talk) 03:15, 25 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wondering why the articles you start still come up for new page patrol

[edit]

Hi Jevansen! I just "marked as patrolled" Alexander Dick, and thought, "Ye Gads, of course it should be marked as patrolled, it was started by Jevansen!" Do you have a personal reason for not having the Wikipedia:Autopatrolled permission? I haven't looked through your archives, but I'm flabbergasted why you haven't, and can only think this must be a choice on your part. --Shirt58 (talk) 13:25, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I know I do have Auto patrol and have for quite some time. The Alexander Dick article was created by User:IgnorantArmies, not sure why my name would be coming up. Cheers. Jevansen (talk) 13:43, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think I got this fuddled up with Cliff Deacon, which came up as a new page, but was, of course, marked as marked as autopatrolled. If there was such a thing as a monthly allowance for experienced editors making beginners mistakes, I'd have definitely used up my allotment for July 2011 already. :-) --Shirt58 (talk) 14:26, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Chris Heighinton England

[edit]

If you take a look through Chris Heighington and actually read it you will see that his father Tom is from England and he has weighed up options to play for the England national rugby league team, therefore he is of English descent thanks to his father does Chris himself have to be born there to be of English descent? NO. Here is just one source that confirms this http://www.watoday.com.au/rugby-league/league-news/heighington-turns-back-on-poms-to-chase-blue-jersey-20110126-1a5fa.html and please stop deleting his english backround from his page. Harry Equid dob

[edit]

Hey. I just added a dod to Harry Equid's article, but I noticed that his Essendon profile has his dob as 1924, but stats rleague has it as 1923. Hi! We're having a Canberra Wikimeetup on 20 November 2011 at Siren Bar in Gunghalin from 2pm to 4pm. It's most just a chance to chat with other local Wikipedians, get a chance to go a different sort of bar (which is reasonably kid friendly, serves real food, and has non-alcholic options), and, if you're interested, learning more about what Wikimedia Australia and local GLAM projects are happening. He's reverted it and repeated his interpretation of the by laws on the talk page. I've reverted the edit back, put a vandalism warning on his talk page and on the NFL talk page reminded him that he needs independent third party sources for his claim because his interpretation is original research (and goes against the NFL interpretation FWIW). Jevansen I am really needing your help now. IP 60 is clearly trying to bait me on the NFL talk page with the intent of trying to get me to admit that his interpretation is right. He is trying to game the system as well. What I want to know is - would I be right in adding this information to the Dispute Resolution section above the discussion? Or would that make me guilty of a gaming violation myself? I am really worried here as I hope you would understand and I'm not handling this very well. I need to do something - I can't just sit on my thumbs here. This is out of control completely and I honestly think a ban for this IP needs to be considered. But I can't just yet. Simon Clarke

[edit]

I'm a bit troubled by a statement on the Simon Clarke (rugby union) article that he was England's most-capped scrum-half until Steve Smith overtook him. It is sourced though, from a book, so I'm loath to just remove it - would you mind checking the source again? The record was actualy held by Clarke's predecessor, Dickie Jeeps, who had 24 caps for England against Clarke's 13. Cheers. --Bcp67 (talk) 14:39, 21 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Fair solution! It's difficult when there is a claim which is sourced but facutally accurate. Looks like the guy who wrote it was a player himself and probably just unware of the stats, unlike a pedant like myself! - thanks for your help.--Bcp67 (talk) 10:44, 22 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The article List of cricket incidents has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No clear indication as to what's an "incident". This could be nearly anything in cricket.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Hey, I've never modified a wiki and have no idea how.

However, I noticed you created the wiki about my great granddad, http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Bob_Corbett_(footballer)

I was wondering if you could update it slightly with the information about him from this link: http://www.awm.gov.au/research/people/roll_of_honour/person.asp?p=553641

Regards, Bryan — Preceding unsigned comment added by 176.27.146.253 (talk) 00:11, 6 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Happy to, but could I just confirm first that we are on the same page. This nominal roll lists the year of his birth as 1922 (we have 1895). Is it the footballer who was killed in the war, or his son? (nominal roll lists his next of kin as a "Robert Corbett"). Cheers Jevansen (talk) 00:42, 6 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Davis Cup representative articles

[edit]

Hello there! I noticed that you've taken the initiative to split off the player tables from the nation Davis Cup articles to new articles. Was there any discussion regarding this with any of the WikiProject? This is quite a significant change, one which I'm not entirely sure I agree with, and I've seen no record of a discussion on WT:TENNIS, nor have I seen a discussion on any of the article pages. This should not have been a change that was made unilaterally, in my opinion.

On a side note, I'd like to advise that you should use ndashes (–) instead of hyphens in the win-loss records recorded in those player tables. Thanks. Prayerfortheworld (talk) 13:47, 2 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I didn't split off any player tables. The only one of the lists that already had a player table on the team article was the American one. Someone else created that list.
The ones which I created were all from scratch, so I was adding new information, rather than transferring between articles. The Canadian and Croatian team articles have a simple bullet list of former players, but all other team articles didn't list past players.
If people disagree with having them as lists then I wouldn't be that bothered if these new tables were moved to the team articles and the lists became redirects (from the Davis Cup template). That said, to use Canada as an example, there are existing lists for their national representatives in cricket, rugby, football (soccer), hockey etc, so having one for tennis seems reasonable.
For these reasons (creating rather than transferring & list precedents) I didn't think what I have been doing was all that controversial/significant and thus needed any consensus. I'd welcome a discussion on the matter however if you think it is warranted. Cheers. Jevansen (talk) 00:09, 3 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thanks for clarifying that. I don't disagree with these changes, after reading your justification. I just felt that this was a change that should've been discussed on WT:TENNIS, even if it were reasonable, since this change makes at least forty new articles and significantly affects at least forty others in terms of content. I'd advise that you should discuss changes of this magnitude before making the changes, and take appropriate steps to ensure that that information is still accessible. Thanks for adding those other tables to Wikipedia, though, it's something that needed to be done. Happy editing! Prayerfortheworld (talk) 03:37, 3 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Jevansen! I also had this doubt since I detected a problem on page List of Australian Open men's singles champions. Realized in the hall of champions (in 1982) was with the flag of South Africa and on the event page (1982 Australian Open) had the American flag. Sure, I do a lot of research about it, without having a firm conclusion. About the article you gave me, was published in June 1983, and there he was informed American citizen since "last August", however, was still in 1982. But then I found out the Australian Open, at that time, was played at the end of the year in mid-October or November (after the U.S. Open), and not at the beginning of the year as is done today. It became a source of confusion and this news, along with the discovery date of the tournament at the time, explained everything. From my understanding, he was a U.S. citizen when he won the Australian Open in 1982. Also pass a page of the site itself the Australian Open that talks about it. [1] I greatly appreciate for your help. Thank you! Egtj (talk) 16:41, 18 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You're right, I was going by the assumption the Australian Open was in January. He was definitely a US citizen by October. Nice work! Jevansen (talk) 07:30, 19 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

New Player Articles

[edit]

G'day, I've noticed all the great new player articles that you've made recently - are you following a list or just jumping around? I'm developing an automated excel based database/list system that makes writing stubs simple, but a couple of times I've gone to cut and paste my version and found that you've already created the article. At the moment I'm sticking to the single season players list, as it's easier to code for a single team than for multiple seasons/teams. So unless you have a particular list/club era that you are trying to complete, if you could stick to the multiple season players, then we won't be treading on each others toes too much. With over 6000 players still without pages, there's more than enough to go around! I could always jump to the 70s, no draft details makes it a bit easier too. Thanks for all your hard work, The-Pope (talk) 10:46, 10 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, I'm happy to stick to multiple seasons players (using that list). I'd been going off the "List of XXX Football Club players" articles, sourced from AFL Tables, which I now see can often differ from names on the Wikiproject single/multiple player lists. It would be great if we could at least have stubs for everyone who debuted in the AFL era .. which helps towards a goal of having no more redlinks on the VFL/AFL Draft articles (except for some clubs). Cheers. Jevansen (talk) 02:34, 11 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
