Adam Voges and Batting Averages
[edit]You reverted my edit stating that "claims need appropriate supporting references, not hyperbole from one journalist". However, you aren't clear on what constitutes "an appropriate supporting reference". (Ironically, you accuse me of subjectivity, while yourself being subjective.) I can't see anything wrong about my edit. Don Bradman's average is, in fact, iconic and deserves mention in the lead. Adam Voges has historically been the only batsman to come close to this, and has been compared by numerous people (not just one journalist, I can give more references) to Bradman. So, while his average remains high, I think both names deserve mention in the lead. Please explain objectively why you feel otherwise. 96.248.68.27 (talk) 00:08, 20 March 2016 (UTC)
- Appropriate supporting references would be articles that make serious claims that Voges has rivalled "Bradman's status in the game's elite". I'll save you the time, you won't find one which goes beyond a mention of statistics. Voges is not the only batsman to have a Bradmanesque start to their career. I'd suggest reading about Jimmy Adams, who averaged 87 after 12 Tests. Barely averaged 40 in the end. More recently Mike Hussey averaged 84 after 20 Tests. If you think Voges averaging 95 is significantly better than both of those, consider that he is only one low score away from averaging in the 80s as well. The journalists know this, which is why it is you and not them making these claims. Jevansen (talk) 04:16, 20 March 2016 (UTC)

New tennis article creation
[edit]Just a heads up. When making tennis player tables, as our tennis guidelines now stand, outcome should be "result", the tables need a "category", and we don't use a number column at all. However the number column is under discussion in detail at the project talk page. Thanks. Fyunck(click) (talk) 23:47, 14 April 2016 (UTC)

[edit]Thanks for adding the ref for Raymonde Veber Jones, there have been tons of times where I've seen people add living people without a ref for things like that (of course the most amusing was when I saw one being added to a guy born in 1850, they must of misread that as 1950 is my only guess!) [edit]Certainly appreciate your feedback on the Kicks after the siren in Australian rules football article, I left a bit of food for thought on the Talk page. I had a little chuckle to myself when the Hun / Fox Footy ran an article today that talked of how "only 38 people have done it since 1913" – in the space of two hours I found four more, surely you'd just say "at least"! But I guess that is the state of journalism (or lack thereof) these days...
It's definitely been a while since I've edited heavily on WP, even longer since I've seen the names of guys like you, Pope, Sge etc... do any of those guys still edit? I can vividly recall the enjoyable WP:AFL Quiz circa 2009. Hope all is well. Gibbsyspin 10:02, 16 May 2016 (UTC)
- Hey Gibbsy, good to hear from you. Ah yes, forgot about that quiz, the cricket members had one as well which met the same fate. Both were good fun. You'll find that User:The-Pope is very much still active, User:Roisterer is still around too. Incidentally I just went back and checked if anyone has recently edited the AFL quiz and noticed that the Pope finally provided us with an answer to the final question, some seven years after it was asked in 2009 ... that's a long time to leave us hanging. Jevansen (talk) 10:52, 16 May 2016 (UTC)
- Welcome back Mr Spin. I was waiting to answer the Quiz question after I created {{Fremantle Football Club premiership players}}. <sadface> In regards to the Kicks ATS article, referencing to You Tube is probably my bigger issue, rather than other leagues. Will expand my comment there. The-Pope (talk) 12:07, 16 May 2016 (UTC)

[edit]I was looking at the history for Sarah Robles and noticed that you removed Category:American weightlifters using HotCat). - Hi Marc. Thank you for your question. I am currently splitting these categories by gender. In this case I removed the category as it is a parent category of Category:American women weightlifters, which already existed on Sarah's page. Jevansen (talk) 09:18, 23 August 2016 (UTC)

Alex Stenzel
[edit]A world ranking is notable in itself and three world rankings and having additional mastered 10 other diverse athletic disciplines certainly qualifies for a great multi athlete.Vonlandsberg (talk) 03:19, 28 August 2016 (UTC)
- Not notable per Wikipedia:Notability (sports). Junior tennis players are presumed notable if they have "been in the top 3 of the junior ITF world rankings", cyclists need to have competed in a UCI, Grand Tour or Olympic race and merely competing in the Ironman World Championship is not enough, a "top ten finish" is required for a presumption of notability. If any of these are met, they need to be supported by a independent reliable source (not Alex Stenzel.com). Jevansen (talk) 03:33, 28 August 2016 (UTC)
Stenzel made it to the semifinals at the Port Washington Rolex Cup, in Port Washington New York, in 1981 which was then considered the unofficial indoor world championships in the under 18 division. The only sources are news paper cut outs at Stenzel official website. [1]Vonlandsberg (talk) 03:55, 28 August 2016 (UTC)
- Does that meet any of the requirements listed at WP:NTENNIS? Jevansen (talk) 04:01, 28 August 2016 (UTC)
No, but still a notable multi-athlete. How about creating a new page called poly athlete that doesn't have such a high requirements for the primary sport but takes in consideration a high level of sophistication in many athletic disciplines. Vonlandsberg (talk) 04:39, 28 August 2016 (UTC)
- We could ... but he wouldn't be good enough for that either. Jevansen (talk) 04:42, 28 August 2016 (UTC)
Do you know of any other athletes who have been as good as he has in as many and such diverse variety of sports?Vonlandsberg (talk) 05:31, 28 August 2016 (UTC)
- Is he good? I can't find any sources which discuss his supposed all-round sporting abilities. Maybe he just has a lot of time of his hands? I guess there are only so many vegetables you can make a sandwich out of. Jevansen (talk) 06:06, 28 August 2016 (UTC)
Here is link to his official athlete site it lists his 3 world rankings and also shows him performing 12 other sports at an expert level. [2]Vonlandsberg (talk) 09:31, 28 August 2016 (UTC)
- If he is such a multitalented sportsman, why is there no coverage of his sporting accomplishments anywhere other than his own website? I have looked at the link you provided, which is basically just images of Alex in the outdoors. The only thing I learned from it is that he doesn't like wearing shirts. Jevansen (talk) 10:21, 28 August 2016 (UTC)
- Yes, it looks like that he likes to show off his abs. And I agree he should have gotten some coverage. But there is no other sources then pictures and videos except for the three world rankings which are documented.Vonlandsberg (talk) 22:15, 28 August 2016 (UTC)

Invitation to the African Destubathon
[edit]Hi. You may be interested in participating in the African Destubathon which starts on October 15. Africa currently has over 37,000 stubs and badly needs a quality improvement editathon/contest to flesh out basic stubs. There are proposed substantial prizes to give to editors who do the most articles, and planned smaller prizes for doing to most destubs for each of the 53 African countries, so should be enjoyable! So it would be a good chance to win something for improving stubs on African sportspeople, including footballers, athletes, Olympians and Paralympians etc, particularly female ones, but also male. Even if contests aren't your thing we would be grateful if you could consider destubbing a few African articles during the drive to help the cause and help reduce the massive 37,000 + stub count, of which many are rated high importance (think Regions of countries etc). If you're interested in competing or just loosely contributing a few expanded articles on African Paralympians, Olympians and committees etc, please add your name to the Contestants/participants section. Diversity of work from a lot of people will make this that bit more special. Thanks. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:13, 6 October 2016 (UTC)
