Anton Sebastianpillai

I would be grateful if someone could kindly check the ethnicity-related text and categories on Anton Sebastianpillai, and perhaps translate the article into a suitable language(s). Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:18, 8 April 2020 (UTC)

I suggest to change the aforesaid article name to Tissamaharama alleged Tamil Brahmi Inscription. Tissamaharama Tamil Brahmi inscription- see the details. Some scholars have successfully showed that the initial reading of this inscription by Mahadevan was not logical. Mahadevan's reading was also partially accepted by Ragupathy but completely rejected by Somadeva and Falk. Therefore it is incorrect to identify this potsherd completely as a Tamil Brahmi inscription. Please comment on its talk page--L Manju (talk) 16:33, 27 April 2020 (UTC)

Hello there. This is an invitation to join the 50,000 Destubbing Challenge Focus of the Week. £250 (c. $310) is being given away in May, June and July with £20 worth of prizes to give away every week for most articles destubbed. Each week there is a different region of focus, including one week dedicated to South-South East Asia, which includes Sri Lanka, though half the prize will still be rewarded for articles on any subject. There's a potential £120 to be won in total for destubbing on any subject or region of your choice. Sign up if you want to contribute at least one of the weeks or support the idea! † Encyclopædius 11:49, 28 April 2020 (UTC)

questions about medias in Sri Lanka

Could someone tell me the newspapers, TV channels, and magazines in Sri Lanka with high credibility? I am now working on Colombo Financial City in Chinese version, but I don't know how to find the trustworthy newspapers in Sri Lanka.Johnson.Xia (talk) 20:25, 28 October 2019 (UTC)

Hi John,

Notable, credible English newspapers in Sri Lanka are: Daily FT, Daily Mirror, Sunday Times, Daily News, Sunday Observer, The Morning, Ceylon Today, The Island, Sunday Island,

Hope this helps!

Where was the "Colombo Art Gallery", referred to in Charles Freegrove Winzer in the context of a 1941 exhibition held there? Is it the same as the National Art Gallery, Sri Lanka? The later article does not mention a date of foundation. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:47, 16 August 2020 (UTC)

It's very likely that they are one and the same. This article suggests that the gallery which is currently known as the National Art Gallery was completed in 1932 and wasn't taken oven by the government (nationalised) until 1971.--Obi2canibe (talk) 13:46, 16 August 2020 (UTC)

Need help with Central Province stub articles

Hi folks! I'm a member of the Stub sorting WP and I'm trying to sort Category:Central Province, Sri Lanka geography stubs into their respective districts. (There are over 1,200 articles without any district category assigned; I'm having to go to each article, check the coordinates on a map, and sort accordingly.) There are several articles where the title includes "Eastern Province" but the stub type assigned is that for Central Province, and there are no coordinates to check. tl;dr If you know what province any of the following settlements are in, would you please indicate it here or assign the appropriate province category to the article?

Thanks in advance for any help! Her Pegship (?) 21:12, 30 October 2020 (UTC)
@Pegship: Although it's common for several settlements to have the same name, they all look like they're in Central Province and whoever created the articles used the wrong province in the title.
This list of villages in Central Province from 1992 might help with your work as it's sorted by district. You can then use Cat-a-lot to categorise the settlements by district. Still a lot of work to categorise 1,200 articles but easier than checking co-ordinates.--Obi2canibe (talk) 15:04, 31 October 2020 (UTC)
Thank you SO VERY MUCH. My search skills are well-honed but I have been unable to find anything like this list online. I've never heard of Cat-a-Lot but will go find it as soon as convenient. Thank you for broadening my horizons. Her Pegship (?) 18:04, 31 October 2020 (UTC)

Chris troutman Hi there I’m Lanka is the best and I am correct the maps being shown are incorrect to historic standards as I placed the original maps back, people kept removing it also sorry for being seem to be disruptive I’m just not good on the Wikipedia sites do to the HTML and it’s hard to use the talk area on mobile so I can’t add the summery and reason properly to why I keep changing the maps back to the original without explaining why sorry for creating a disturbance I just didn’t know how to communicate the changes to the Wikipedia site but I also suggest that the wiki project look into the page history to see what Had happened. Requesting for members of the wiki group to fix up the wikis

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anuradhapura_Kingdom

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom_of_Dambadeniya

Before starting to read this you may want to bring up a map of Sri Lanka with its districts marked out to help you understand what is happening and see why I tried to fix the problem

And other sites of significants to Sri Lankan culture had got fake maps of Sri Lankan kingdoms with clearly depicted mordern day democratic socialist republic of Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 districts but have been coloured in to sort of match the ancient maps and not clearly marking historical territory of kingdoms that were based of rivers and water bodies in Sri Lanka one key example is the Anuradhapura kingdom wiki which has a map shaded in with the Anuradhapura, polonnwaru, Jaffna and other northern Sri Lankan districts instead of the Area between Deduru oya and the Mahaweli river which historically separated the kingdom from the Malaya and Ruhuna. I did attempted to reverse this error but users reverted it back asking for more information then this

Me and some people did fix some of the wikis but though when I was updating Anuradhapura polonwaru ect it was keep being reverted by the same users which I did send messages to explain but were ignored

Also sorry to post this really late I’m on mobile and it’s really glitchy and was hard to do a whole report on what happenedLanka is the best (talk) 10:40, 29 December 2021 (UTC)

So, not entirely sure how the proposed deletion process works, but I guess I'm supposed to stick this particular template in here to notify you about it, so here it is:

Notice

The article CTB Flying Squad has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

the CTB flying squad doesn't appear to have actually existed (see Talk:CTB_Flying_Squad#Possibly_a_misinterpretation?)

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

Hello Wikiproject members, Peter Ormond (talk · contribs) redirected the above page to List of heads of state of Sri Lanka without providing an explanation, So I reverted him. I believe such redirections should be done only after a discussion. I think List of presidents of Sri Lanka is a perfectly alright article to have. In 1972 Sri Lanka became a republic and the salient feature of a republic is having a president as the head of state instead of a monarch. Therefore the list of presidents is really important culturally and politically for a republic. Furthermore, Articles such as List of presidents of India exist and a featured list. Therefore I strongly believe it should not be redirected, if it needs to be redirected it needs consensus obtained through a discussion. Regards--Chanaka L (talk) 10:46, 20 April 2022 (UTC)

Agree - controversial changes should always be debated/discussed on the article's talkpage, so that a consensus is reached before any changes are implemented. Dan arndt (talk) 12:42, 20 April 2022 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Parliament is counting from 1978?

During the live telecast today, I heard Wickremesinghe being referred as the "newly elected 8th president of Sri Lanka." Similarly other day I heard the phrase the "10th parliament" referring the current legislature. Contrarily, here in enwiki they are referred as the 9th president and the 16th Parliament of Sri Lanka. It is clear that parliament is keeping record and counting from the 1978 constitution. I think these disparities should be reconciled. Otherwise it would be Original research on our part. Cheers. Chanaka L (talk) 14:40, 20 July 2022 (UTC)

The Parliament news article. They seem to not bother about Gopallawa's non-executive presidency. I believe adhering to the parliament's numbering scheme in List of presidents of Sri Lanka is advisable not to confuse the nonchalant readers.--Chanaka L (talk) 05:01, 21 July 2022 (UTC)

Or Koththu - LionCountry25 (talk) 07:14, 4 November 2022 (UTC)
As far as pronunciation goes, writing as "koththu" is correct. This pronunciation is similar to "thothuthu". And we will not write that as "tottu" in English.
Koththu is just koththu.
"Roti" (godamba roti) has become just a variation among "rice koththu", "noodles koththu" and "dolphin koththu" (which is made out of parata robbons). Thush 007 (talk) 07:17, 30 January 2023 (UTC)

Theres no such thing as kottu roti. Cause its parāta that's cut into small pieces to make kottu. And since "ත්තු" written in english is "ttu", the accurate name should be "kottu". Some will say "ttu" sounds like "ට්ටු", but when written in english, "ට්ටු = ṭṭu". So කොත්තු=kottu. Again its not kottu roti. Kottu roti is basically parāta. Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Aymatth2 (talk) 14:32, 13 April 2023 (UTC)

You are invited to join the discussion at Wikipedia talk:Content assessment#Proposal: Reclassification of Current & Future-Classes as time parameter, which is within the scope of this WikiProject. This WikiProject received this message because it currently uses "Current" and/or "Future" class(es). There is a proposal to split these two article "classes" into a new parameter "time", in order to standardise article-rating across Wikipedia (per RfC), while also allowing simultaneous usage of quality criteria and time for interest projects. Identify an author?

Vajra Chandrasekera posted this picture on his Instagram; apparently it's a novel that his father wrote, which was successful enough to have four printings. I can't read the title or the author's name (Google Lens refuses to even recognize it as text!), and thus I can't determine whether his father (who he has described in interviews as "a moderately well-known Sri Lankan writer (novels, some short stories) of the 70s and 80s") was independently notable.

Can anyone read that? Thanks. DS (talk) 14:42, 28 June 2024 (UTC)

I do not know Sinhalese but based on Chandrasekera's blog the book is පස්වෙනියත් පුතෙක් (Pasvaniyat Putek) by Tilak Chandrasekera. Obi2canibe (talk) 10:35, 29 June 2024 (UTC)
Ah, thank you. Should have checked there first. Well, regardless of whether the elder Chandrasekera was notable, he doesn't appear to have received sufficient coverage in English to enable me to research him, much less write about him. Perhaps someone else will do the first of those, if not the second. DS (talk) 14:56, 29 June 2024 (UTC)
