Translation
What is the meaning of "来帰する" in this sentence: "三鎮陥落.広嗣軍惨敗により、豊前国の郡司層は兵を率い、続々と政府軍に来帰する。"? bamse (talk) 09:48, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
- I think it's "surrender". This page says "大野東人25日付報告、豊前国の大領・少領らの来帰が相次ぐ。" and the ja article says "9月25日、豊前国の諸郡司が500騎、80人、70人と率いて官軍に投降してきた。". Using a zh to ja machine translator, 来帰 was translated as 帰順する/surrender. But it looks like 来帰 sometime means "naturalize" or literally "go/visit somewhere and return" or "come and go". Oda Mari (talk) 15:34, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
- Originally 来帰 means arrive back in Japanese. But in this sentence it means "surrender". Oda Mari's translation is good. --Hot cake syrup (talk) 21:00, 10 September 2011 (UTC)
File licensing question
Hi, I'm using File:Fujiwaranomichinaga.jpg in Murasaki Shikibu and realized I haven't a clue about the licensing on the file. Does the Japanese text add any useful information? Thanks. Truthkeeper (talk) 22:27, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
- I am afraid the Japanese text only says "Fujiwara no Michinaga" so is not that useful. Unfortunately there is no source given in the image description. The uploader has only been active for a short while 5 years ago so asking him/her is likely not going to help. I am not an expert on licensing, but the license of the file looks strange unless the copyright holder (the artist?) put it in PD. Based on the style of the painting, I would suspect it to be from the Edo period which would allow for a PD-Art license. However I am not confident enough to upload it under that license based on a guess. bamse (talk) 22:51, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
- And congratulations for today's main page! bamse (talk) 23:01, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks, I should have asked you directly. The license is no good, so I'll have to try find it somewhere or replace it. Truthkeeper (talk) 00:02, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
- Here's an interesting link to a webcast lecture about the Fujiwara & Michinaga. I suspect the image at the beginning is Michinaga, but can't find it anywhere. Truthkeeper (talk) 01:11, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
- Can't find that image from the webcast either. If you don't mind using an image that is similar in style to those that are already in the article, you could take this image of Michinaga which is a crop from a larger image (see for instance here. That image is from the National Treasure Murasaki Shikibu Diary Ekotoba, Kamakura period (13th century); (the part of the scroll that is located at Fujita Art Museum, not the one from Gotoh Museum). bamse (talk) 17:12, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for that. I've replaced it with another, because the license wouldn't have passed FAC. I'll keep these links in mind though - I'm thinking there are some subsidiary articles on Genji to be done. Truthkeeper (talk) 01:11, 24 August 2011 (UTC)
- "... there are some subsidiary articles on Genji to be done." Sounds good. Very much looking forward to those. bamse (talk) 22:50, 24 August 2011 (UTC)
Does anyone happen to know where all of these images came from? I can't find a source anywhere. Thanks. Truthkeeper (talk) 16:51, 4 September 2011 (UTC)
- Most likely from hist most famous work Zenken Kojitsu (前賢故実, something like "Biography of great men of the past"; various English translations exist) bamse (talk) 05:46, 5 September 2011 (UTC)
- Of course this does not answer your question of what actual source the uploader scanned. Did you try to contact him/her? bamse (talk) 05:51, 5 September 2011 (UTC)
Unsourced speculative edits by anonymous
The currently blocked anonymous 2.224.12.20 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) has a history of problematic edits to articles about Germany, in which he/she repeatedly added unsourced information about administrative subdivisions that may become effective in the (distant) future, but doesn't reflect the current situation. Since he/she also edited several articles on Japanese administrative subdivisions, could someone have a look at his/her contributions? Markussep Talk 11:14, 5 September 2011 (UTC)
Hi, I'm looking for some quick translation help. The Japanese mushroom Marasmius funalis is known in Japanese as Kenawatake. Does this have an English translation? Thanks. J Milburn (talk) 10:38, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
- Hard to say from the romaji only. I was searching for a kanji transcription (which does not need to exist) or a prose explanation of the name, but without success. That being said, "take" is most likely mushroom and "ke" could be "hair" (referring to the hair on the stem). Sorry for not being of much help. bamse (talk) 13:31, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
- It might be 毛縄茸 as "funalis" means "rope-like". 毛 is hair and 縄 is rope. So it could be "hairy rope" or "fuzzy rope". Oda Mari (talk) 15:23, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
- I don't know if this helps: ケナワタケ. It's taken from a Japanese description of the mushroom here. Sasata (talk) 15:41, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
- Thank you, but the link doesn't help. The name is written in katakana only. Oda Mari (talk) 15:50, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

- Thanks, what does it mean? Do you know? J Milburn (talk) 17:10, 9 September 2011 (UTC)

Adding more parameters to {{Infobox Shinto shrine}}
I'd like to see the following parameters in {{Infobox Shinto shrine}}.
- Coordinates
- Shrine rank: ja:社格
- Architecture: architectural sytle of the main building (honden)
- Alternative names
- Pilgrimage: ja:札所
- Festivals: ja:例祭
- Rituals: ja:神事
These already exist in the Japanese template, but I don't how to translate and code this kind of stuff here. Can anybody help? --Shinkansen Fan (talk) 06:53, 9 September 2011 (UTC)

Morning Musume song title translation query
Over on the Kono Chikyū no Heiwa o Honki de Negatterun da yo!/Kare to Issho ni Omise ga Shitai! article (a single by Morning Musume), the song title "Kare to Issho ni Omise ga Shitai!" was translated as "I want to go shopping with him!". I have commented this out in the article, as I have my doubts about whether this is an accurate translation. Apart from the fact that "kare" is more likely to mean "boyfriend" here, I have not heard of "omise ga shitai" being used to mean "go shopping", and without knowing exactly what the song is about, I would have thought that it meant "I want to start/run a shop with my boyfriend". Can any native Japanese or other knowledgeable editor confirm/check this, and possibly comment on the article's Talk page. Thanks. --DAJF (talk) 01:20, 10 September 2011 (UTC)
- I don't know the song either, but your understanding is correct. It's not shopping but running their own shop. --Shinkansen Fan (talk) 07:30, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks. That confirmed what I suspected, although it does seem a bit of an odd title for a song. --DAJF (talk) 09:19, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
Maidashi in desperate need of copy-editing and cleanup
Can someone please have a look over the recently created article Maidashi (a district in Higashi-ku, Fukuoka)? It was written by a Japanese native, and appears to have been mostly machine-translated from the equivalent Japanese Wikipedia article. I had a go at cleaning up the English and removing some of the unrelated stuff myself, but the author still appears bitter about my having sent an earlier article of his to AfD and simply reverted my changes outright as "destructive". This article definitely shows potential for improvement and expansion, but it needs a native English speaker to improve the level of the writing and bring it up to a basic standard. Thanks. --DAJF (talk) 05:53, 10 September 2011 (UTC)
I am slightly bewildered for DAJF's claim. The reason comes from the fact as follows.
His series act [1] consists of three elements.
① correction of the grammatical errors
② large removal
③ treating for using of pic.
For mixed three element, I cannot hide my embarrassment, for these reason I reversed it.
I agreed to ① but for ② and ③ asked him discussion of community.
Mr. Leutha, he is a reliable writer, corrects the grammatical errors now, and I think people of sound judgment will develop an appropriate response.--Hot cake syrup (talk) 09:34, 10 September 2011 (UTC)
Transcription / translation of Hokusai text in Tako to ama
Hi WikiProject Japan, I was considering running File:Tako to ama retouched.jpg through Featured Picture but I would prefer having a transcription and translation of the text in the image. The original author was Hokusai. Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:10, 10 September 2011 (UTC)
- I won't dare to translate this. But from what I can see, the text in ja:蛸と海女 only partially matches that in the print. bamse (talk) 22:26, 10 September 2011 (UTC)
- This seems to be a bit more faithful. That said, the content is the Edo equivalent of porn movie dialogue, consisting basically of variations of "Suck my pussy, ah, oh, I'm coming, ah". エエ、いつそ、アレアレ、おくのこつぼのくちをすハれるので、いきがはずんで、アエエモイツク... Jpatokal (talk) 23:03, 10 September 2011 (UTC)
- For the sake of curiosity, I must say that I am interested in seeing that. If a transcription were available, I could ask someone here. I can't really identify the text all that well, so could anyone vouch for the quality of the transcription at the blog? (I'm assuming there is quite a bit of "muto" or however its spelled...) Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:23, 10 September 2011 (UTC)
- The transcription seems to match, but turning that into English is not straightforward: the writing is in historical kana and full of obscure slang. The blog entry above explains some of the terminology though. Jpatokal (talk) 23:52, 10 September 2011 (UTC)
- Fair enough. I will add the transcription to the image description page and request translation. Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:04, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

- Another thing to consider: this picture will never be allowed on the front page as a picture of the day due to the content. Are there other featured pictures with similar content? - There are some nudes and scatological images, but the scatologicals aren't for the main page. Nothing overtly sexual, although the current main image at Hentai could probably get FP status. It would have to be whitelisted for WP:FPC first though. It should be noted that FP status is not exclusively for MP exposure. Crisco 1492 (talk) 04:25, 11 September 2011 (UTC)
I found an en translation at here, quoting from this page. I think the translation is fairly good. Oda Mari (talk) 07:28, 11 September 2011 (UTC)
- Fair enough... but said translation would be copyrighted, methinks. I'll try asking at MCQ. Crisco 1492 (talk) 09:05, 11 September 2011 (UTC)
- It's copyrighted, so one by us would be necessary. Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:48, 11 September 2011 (UTC)
- Nice to see Japanese sex-related dialogues haven't changed much in 200 years. Crisco 1492 (talk) 09:10, 11 September 2011 (UTC)
Just curious, but with all the many beautiful examples of ukiyo-e we have available, why something that's so overtly sexual? Truthkeeper (talk) 13:13, 11 September 2011 (UTC)
- To be quite honest, that's the first time I've heard the term; I'll take a look. I chose Tako to ama as it "caught my attention" and is actually a fairly important historical piece, based off what I've seen. Heaven knows how many editors would be willing to nominate it. Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:30, 11 September 2011 (UTC)
- There is a genre called shunga. Oda Mari (talk) 13:41, 11 September 2011 (UTC)
- True enough, but the only image aside from Tako that is of high enough resolution is File:Meiji Period Shunga.jpg, and it doesn't seem to be a historically significant piece (also should be renamed...) Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:52, 11 September 2011 (UTC)
- Sorry, but as I am not an expert with the genre, I cannot tell which ones are historically significant pieces. Oda Mari (talk) 15:05, 11 September 2011 (UTC)
- Neither am I; I'm basing my comment on the fact that it seems to have no title and no article. BTW, if possible I'd like some help with Extermination of Evil; I cannot read any Japanese, so I am not sure what the proper Japanese names of the five paintingswould be. Crisco 1492 (talk) 10:35, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
- Not sure about the historical value, but it is probably the best known shunga image. As for the Extermination of Evil, the images don't have an official title (as given by the artist), so titles assigned will be descriptive. The emuseum website, Agency for Cultural Affairs and possibly others use the titles which are already in your article, so not sure the following is of any use to you: (i) Tenkeisei (天刑星, lit. "star of divine punishment"), (ii) Sendan Kendatsuba (栴檀乾闥婆, name of one of the protectors of Buddhism), (iii) Shinchū (神虫, lit. "divine insect"), (iv) Shōki (鍾馗, name of an (original Chinese) deities said to prevent plagues and ward off evil), (v) Bishamonten (毘沙門天, name of a guardian god). bamse (talk) 13:55, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot for the transcriptions; I wasn't sure so I didn't include them. Crisco 1492 (talk) 14:06, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

- I'll check it later. Please be patient. OK? Oda Mari (talk) 09:03, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

Ip edits to kana articles
Would some kind soul of this project please have a look at the edits made by 98.237.20.196? They have been making very tumultuous changes to almost every kana article. Are the edits correct or are they disruptive? Many thanks, --Eisfbnore • talk 21:28, 24 September 2011 (UTC)
- Broadly speaking they seem disruptive, eg. this has lost a lot of the information in this. The user has apparently done this before and has been blocked for it [4], so wholesale reverts seem in order. Jpatokal (talk) 22:43, 24 September 2011 (UTC)
- That said, are we really in concensus that examples are unnecessary? The specific examples are mostly crap, but for eg. U (kana) having some is actually kind of handy. Jpatokal (talk) 22:50, 24 September 2011 (UTC)
- Well, there were some examples before, and the consensus at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/IncidentArchive718#Questionable edits to kana articles seems to be that the former examples were good, and the ones that the IP added were unhelpful. I'll probably just revert those changes. --Eisfbnore • talk 11:01, 25 September 2011 (UTC)
Help with quote translation
Can anyone with a better handle of Japanese than me tackle a translation of a quote? I've got the gist of it, but I'm planning on using the quote in an article and I'd like to have it be a little more precise. Here is the quote: 「オレの長い野球生活でもこんな猛打は初めてだ。諸君知っているかい?アメリカでは今日みたいなにヒットの種類を全部打つと“サイクルヒット”というのさ。こんなことは滅多にできないんだ。ヨネダも2000奪三振だって?いいことばかりだな今日は。とてもハッピーな気分だ」。 And the source if you need some context. Spelling for Juro Oka, and does he have an article at jp.wiki?
Greetings, I wrote a stub about Juro Oka, the "father of modern Japanese whaling"; can anyone provide a Japanese spelling of his name? And does an article on him exist on the Japanese wiki? User:Tenmei has contributed to WP:Japan articles enormously. However Tenmei is now discussed to be banned for one year. Please see Wikipedia talk:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Senkaku Islands/Proposed decision#Concerns. Although Tenmei is some problem in editing style in contentious articles, Tenmei should not be banned without any restrictions. I would appreciate any comment there from WP:Japan participants. ―― Phoenix7777 (talk) 10:24, 30 September 2011 (UTC)
- I don't think that lobbying in relation to ArbCom cases is a very good idea. From having been on the receiving end of Tenmei's conduct a couple of years ago, I think that a ban is long overdue. Nick-D (talk) 10:27, 30 September 2011 (UTC)
