aircraft carriers
I noticed that there is a List of battleships of Japan but there is no List of aircraft carriers of Japan. Shouldn't there be one? The unified list of aircraft carriers is missing several non-fleet carriers, like the Ise class battleship conversions, and the I-400 submarine aircraft carriers, so a specific list for Japan would be useful in having these more specialized carriers/less generic. 65.93.12.101 (talk) 11:08, 2 April 2011 (UTC)
- I agree that there should be such a list. walk victor falk talk 19:06, 2 April 2011 (UTC)

Fukushima disaster
The usage of Fukushima disaster and naming of Fukushima I nuclear accidents is in question, see Talk:Fukushima I nuclear accidents.
Are there any other disasters that need to be noted at Fukushima disaster disambiguation page?

2004 NPB baseball crisis
I set out on a quest to write an article on NPB's first and only player strike in 2004. When looking for the corresponding article on the Japanese Wiki, I noticed that it's rolled into one big article with the team merger and the expansion team, among other things. The article is called プロ野球再編問題 (2004年). From what I can tell, this translates to "Pro-baseball realignment"? Anyone have a better translation? Or, better yet, does anyone have any idea what term I can use to name the upcoming English article equivalent? --TorsodogTalk 00:08, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
- As far as I remember the Japanese media coverage back then, gappei mondai/[プロ野球]合併問題 ranked very high on the list of terms used to describe the whole chain of events, ja:球団合併問題 and ja:プロ野球球団合併問題 are also redirects in ja-WP. So, maybe "NPB merger crisis"? Depending on the focus and structure of the article "2004 NPB player strike" might also be fine to keep a similar format to MLB articles as in 1994 MLB strike. Request for input in discussion forum
Given the closely linked subjects of the various religion, mythology, and philosophy groups, it seems to me that we might benefit from having some sort of regular topical discussion forum to discuss the relevant content. I have put together the beginnings of an outline for such discussion at Wikipedia:WikiProject Religion/2011 meeting, and would very much appreciate the input of any interested editors. I am thinking that it might run over two months, the first of which would be to bring forward and discuss the current state of the content, and the second for perhaps some more focused discussion on what, if any, specific efforts might be taken in the near future. Any and all input is more than welcome. John Carter (talk)

WikiProject Japanese Bibliography
It was suggested here that the inactive WikiProject Japanese Bibliography be turned into a task force of this project. Does anyone from this project think this would be a good idea? Hut 8.5 12:56, 7 April 2011 (UTC)
- The project has already been notified twice, see above. --Kleinzach 22:42, 7 April 2011 (UTC)
- I think it's a good idea. It's mainly been kept for historical reasons, but apparently the deletion zealots--who have nothing better to do with their time--want to see it deleted for no good reason. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 06:26, 8 April 2011 (UTC)
- No editor at the Mfd suggested deletion. If this project had woken up earlier you could have actually participated. Apology please! --Kleinzach 07:29, 8 April 2011 (UTC)
- At least one editor suggested it should be deleted or it wouldn't have been at MFD. JJ98 has been going crazy with nominating inactive WikiProjects, despite the instructions on the MFD page. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 06:42, 12 April 2011 (UTC)

Japanese stub templates
FYI, Fry1989 (talk · contribs) changed the image on several Japanese stub templates on 9 and 7 April. The size doesn't appear to have changed, but the existing size themselves seem problematic, since they leave alot of whitespace. See Template talk:Akita-geo-stub for what I mean. 65.93.12.101 (talk) 10:21, 10 April 2011 (UTC)
Old Kyoto Map
For anybody who needs a 1696 map of Kyoto or who just likes looking at pretty maps. bamse (talk) 22:48, 10 April 2011 (UTC)
- The map is called Genroku 9 Kyoto Daiezu (元禄九年京都大絵図) according to the International Research Center for Japanese Studies (Nichibunken). Yodo Castle (ja:淀城) near Yodo Station is clearly visible. Perhaps we can put it somewhere, like Heian-kyo to introduce street naming and numbering. --Shinkansen Fan (talk) 02:38, 12 April 2011 (UTC)

Need to update the "Largest Cities of Japan" section in the main Japan article to reflect 2010 Census Populations
This is actually my first time doing this so I apologize if the format of this type of change request is incorrect. I noticed that the current section "largest Cities of Japan" in the main Japan article is a little outdated and reflects the population of the top 20 Japanese cities from the 2005 Census. The city populations have been updated in the 2010 Japan Census and the new numbers are indicated below (source located at the very bottom):
Rank City Name Prefecture Pop. 1. Tokyo Tokyo 8,949,447 2. Yokohama Kanagawa 3,689,603 3. Osaka Osaka 2,666,371 4. Nagoya Aichi 2,263,907 5. Sapporo Hokkaidō 1,914,434 6. Kōbe Hyōgo 1,544,873 7. Kyōto Kyōto 1,474,473 8. Fukuoka Fukuoka 1,463,826 9. Kawasaki Kanagawa 1,425,678 10. Saitama Saitama 1,222,910 11. Hiroshima Hiroshima 1,174,209 12. Sendai Miyagi 1,045,903 13. Kitakyūshū Fukuoka 977,288 14. Chiba Chiba 962,130 878,056 15. Sakai Osaka 842,134 16. Niigata Niigata 812,192 17. Hamamatsu Shizuoka 800,912 18. Kumamoto Kumamoto 734,294 19. Sagamihara Kanagawa 717,561 20. Shizuoka Shizuoka 716,328
The source for the 2010 Census city population data is located here: www.stat.go.jp/data/kokusei/2010/jinsoku/zuhyou/jinsoku.xls
or just go here and download the "jinsoku" xls (in Japanese): http://www.stat.go.jp/data/kokusei/2010/
Thanks for taking the time to look at and consider my request.

FLC of List of National Treasures of Japan (writings: others)
I invite comments, questions and suggestions for the featured list candidacy of List of National Treasures of Japan (writings: others). The nomination page can be found here. Thanks. bamse (talk) 14:45, 22 March 2011 (UTC)
- It has been listed as Nominations urgently needing reviews, meaning that it is in danger of failing because of a lack of reviews. So far it has received one "support" vote (no "oppose") while three votes is considered to be the minimum for success. Hopefully a member of this wikiproject will have time for a review. You'd need to do the following: Check this list for these criteria and leave your comments (together with a "Support"/"Oppose" vote) here. Thanks a lot! bamse (talk) 21:02, 24 April 2011 (UTC)

JNTO photo library
Hello all. I don't know if you've come across the JNTO photo library - reasonably extensive and some are quite good. Looks like they're ok with bona-fide use - as I have also had confirmed by email (copied below). Don't know if anything can be made of this? Thanks, Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 15:23, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
Dear XXXX,
Thank you very much for your kind interests to our country. Please use our images freely. Each photo has the different credit line, so please find copyright information from the photo detail and put it. Hope it will be of your help.
Best regards,
Yukiko Agata JNTO Tokyo
To clarify, that was specifically in response to my asking whether they are ok for their images to be used in Wikipedia articles, Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 19:17, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
- Looks like a very useful image library. I asked the experts how we can use these images. bamse (talk) 20:23, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

- First pass, reading this, is that we can't use any of it as free use, because article 5 of that notice is essentially a non-commercial stipulation which is. For some incredibly stupid reason that the WMF seems to think they do a good job of justifying, WMF projects treat non-commerical as being not free enough for free use on WMF projects.
- TLDR: These would be "non-commercial" so they would all have to be fair use, not free use.
- I'll look a bit more now, see if I can get anything that might mitigate that. Sven Manguard Wha? 22:24, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
- Nope, no mitigating factors, see below. Sven Manguard Wha? 22:46, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
- Alright, so let's break this down into small, easy to summarize points
- Every single image on that site is marked as copyrighted by JNTO, many others are marked as copyrighted by a local organization/government/person and by JNTO.
- Here's an example of the first kind, the "©JNTO"
- Here's an example of the second kind, the dual ©JNTO/©Other, in this case "©Nagano Prefecture/©JNTO"
- Short of finding the proper person to speak to for each organization/government/person, we cannot use any of the dual copyrighted images, even if JNTO waves their copyright, the other is still in effect.
- As for the ones that only say ©JNTO in that field, in order for Wikipedia to use any of them, Wikipedia must receive a written release, most preferably the one at Wikipedia:CONSENT, for the use of the images on the website. The email that was transposed above is not sufficient for this, it's too vague and grants only Wikipedia use.
- The form could be tweaked in such a way as to allow one form to be used for all the images we wanted to use, however, again, JNTO does not have the ability to override the copyright for anyone other than JNTO, so dual copyrighted images cannot be released this way.
- If you use the CONSENT form, it's already there, if you don't, make sure they know about the commercial aspect, as that's something that they are apparently concerned about.
I know no one likes jumping through hoops, but this is the way it has to be done. Good luck and thanks for putting in all this effort. If you need anything else, drop me a message, Sven Manguard Wha? 22:44, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
Japanese Wikipedia images
I've been trying to use some of the images from the Japanese Wikipedia but in some instances the result is only red text with the image name. Has anyone had any experience of dealing with this? Thanks, Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 19:15, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
- Any image you see on the Japanese Wikipedia, is located in one of two types of storage location: (i) on Japanese Wikipedia itself or (ii) on Wikimedia Commons. For instance, this is an image that belongs to type "(i)". This is an image that belongs to type "(ii)". Note the message below the ukiyoe image, saying that this file is located on "commons". This message is not present in images of type "(i)". On English wikipedia you can use only images that have been uploaded to Commons (or to English Wikipedia). If you want to use an image of type "(i)" from Japanese wikipedia on English Wikipedia, you can reupload it to Commons under the same licence mentioning its location on Japanese Wikipedia, etc (see WP:MTC). I use this tool for such cases which makes the process less painful. bamse (talk) 20:04, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
