A couple of questions

[edit]

Hey, Miss V., I need some pointers on two draft article questions.

  1. Draft:Abdülbaki Gölpınarlı is translated from Turkish Wikipedia with the help of a friend who is interested in his work translating Rumi's poetry. My question: what is the appropriate way to indicate it is based on the Turish Wiki page? By the way, did you know that people in Turky cannot access Wikipedia, Turkish or otherwise?
  2. I'm interested in drafting an article on a book that currently has a re-direct to the author's bio. What is the least clunky way to change a re-direct to an article?

Thanks for any light you can shed on these minor issues. Hope your December is going well! — Grand'mere Eugene (talk) 21:49, 16 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Howdy!
  1. This looks like the thing--a talk page template: Category:Pages translated from Turkish Wikipedia. I know there a lot of folks who live overseas who can't access their electronic ballot materials. It is quite a long list of countries, so this does not surprise me!
  2. For the article, just turn it into an article! Then check what redirects there. I think a bot will fix any double redirects but I used to like to check them myself.
Hope this helps! Valfontis (talk) 20:06, 17 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, yes, I know I can count on you for practical advice! — Grand'mere Eugene (talk) 20:23, 17 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Finished new natural area article

[edit]

Hey, would you have time to check out Sitka Sedge State Natural Area? It could use some pruning--I got lazy and maybe put in too many direct quotes. Sigh. Then I added it to List of Oregon state parks but couldn't translate the coordinates to create the little dot on the map. Will post to Oregon talp page for that technical stuff. Hello again! Curious about your take on these edits to the Agness article. I'm very skeptical of those claims about the population. Jsayre64 (talk) 19:19, 30 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

What Wikipedia guidelines are at play here? Is the information cited? I reverted to the last clean version. It would be a service if you could research the claims made by the new editor, update the article, and provide citations. Some of those edits seemed useful (but WP:OR) and I hate to throw the good out with the bad. Valfontis (talk) 01:49, 9 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

TPSs who like to work on community articles might want to take a gander at Waconda, Oregon. Needs editing and pruning. Valfontis (talk) 23:42, 13 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I thought better of blanket reverting so my solution was put all the new edits "below the cut" as it were. Valfontis (talk) 23:43, 13 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

COI Help with Catlin Gabel School

[edit]

Hello @Valfontis: I am in a conflict of interest relationship with Catlin Gabel School, and am looking for a volunteer to help review and make my requested edits, if approved. I noticed that at one point you had edited the page for the neighborhood West Haven-Sylvan, Oregon where the school resides. Might you have the time and inclination to assist me/the school? They are wanting to make some updates and additions to the page. A few volunteers have helped already, but may have lost interest. I greatly appreciate you considering my request. A tag has been placed on Category:Smegma (band) albums requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Liz Read! Aritrary Header

[edit]

Dear fellow Wikipedian, Despite having been off Wikipedia for sometime now, I am coming back with a few specific ideas in mind for which I may need to get help and advice. I am looking to create a few Wikipedia pages about various financial institutions which are quite high in notability but have not yet been covered, however, despite my experience and my knowledge of the field, I am new to this kind of content.

Therefore, I am looking for other, recognized editors that I could consult in case I need help or advice if I encounter roadblocks during my endeavor. I would need to get advice from someone who is well versed in the fields of finance and business. (Or interested in such matters enough to help me)

Let me know if you could help me with this task and if not, let me know if you know someone on wikipedia that would be the go to person to help with such matters ? I am trying to contact a few administrators who seem to be highly competent in those fields but am currently having a hard time finding someone. PS: I love the isle of Man, would love to visit at some point Thanks in advance, SUPERGTOR (talk) 21:54, 11 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How we will see unregistered users

[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Nomination of Alice Di Micele for deletion

[edit]

Hello, I'm hoping to get your input to help save this page because in a weird way you are indirectly responsible for the nomination for deletion. I typically only do little edits here, spelling and grammar, correcting numbers based on the passing years and such, but the other day I wanted to change the name of the above mentioned page based on my real world conversation with Alice. The page originally was titled "Alice Di Micele" but on 15 September 2015 you changed it to "Alice DiMicele" and said "that's how she spells her own name" but it isn't, at least not according to her. I didn't know how to make the edit to move the page and I asked in the Tearoom. The first editor to respond explained what needed to be done, another editor fixed it before I could, but then a third editor came along and said that the page should be deleted. This is all over my skill level to deal with. I've known Alice since we were teenagers and I would hate for my bumbling attempt to update and correct her page were to lead to it being deleted.

Thank you for any help you can give. I believe Alice will also be coming to your page to plead her case with you.

Possible Deletion of page

[edit]

Greetings. I was sent a warning from a friend who edited it, that my wikipedia bio (which i honestly have nothing to do with) was going to be deleted and that i needed to fix it. I knew nothing about wiki and tried to fix the problems but found out it was COI. Apparently a friend who is an editor, tried to fix the spelling of my name. Long story short, when you changed it from Di Micele to DiMicele you weren't wrong... because technically I spell it both ways.. but in the last year I've had to make sure i keep the space in my name. My legal name is Alice Di Micele. Long story short, and sparing you the annoying details of having a complicated name, I couldn't get my facebook page for my music business or my spotify pages verified until i used the correct spelling. So I've been moving to add the space everywhere and a friend asked me the other day if he could fix it on my wiki page. I don't know much about wikipedia so I said sure. Now my bio is likely going to be deleted as that somehow alerted editors to it and they feel my career is not notable enough for a wiki page. Many of the feature articles done about me over the years aren't available online and I think people who don't live in Oregon or love folk music have no clue who I am or why I would have a page about me. If you care to weigh in on the talk/delete page I would be grateful since apparently you know who I am. It may be that I am not notable enough to continue to have a wiki page as the other editors seem to think. If thats the case, then thats fine, but I figured it was worth speaking to you since you edited the page at one point. The person who set it up originally isn't on wiki anymore and says they don't have time to even look at this. https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Alice_Di_Micele

Thank you for your time. warmly, Alice Di Micele Alicedimicele (talk) 00:16, 11 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@StreetcarEnjoyer Thanks for the heads up. Usually I fight for the notability of my articles, but this sounds like a case of WP:IHEARDITONNPRONEMORNING and WP:GEESHIHADNOIDEADOUGLASCOUNTYHADANAEROSPACEINDUSTRY. No interest in it besides me and some COI editors. May or may not merit a blurb in the article about the space award. Edit: It wasn't even linked there! I just did that for convenience, however, no objections to this PROD. I'll let it run its course. Valfontis (talk) 20:41, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article Havana, Oregon has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable location. Sources consist of GNIS (not sufficient for notability) and a trivial one-word mention in a 1913 magazine ("The first section extends from Pendleton to Havana station, a distance of eight miles"). Satellite view shows empty farmland; topo maps from the 1930s suggest this was never a community but rather a rail siding possibly with a flag stop for local farmers. That is a far cry from a "community" and the article thus fails WP:GEOLAND.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

GNIS saving efforts...excellent work

[edit]

Hey Valfontis!

Well said...well said, indeed - [4]

Big fan of your Oregon work. Me and my husband read some of your work when we came back from a Central Oregon road trip last year, helping us fill in a bunch we didn't know. Just great efforts on your part.

Hope your able to save more articles during this GNIS cleanup task. It's been draining in my area of interest...

All the best!

Hello! My condolences about Ruth! It's good to know someone is reading my gentle screeds, even if the intended targets don't seem to be! (Or are getting scared off, alas.) I just ordered four railroad books and plan to get my revenge that way, by writing in as much detail as possible about the stations in an article about the line. I don't think redirecting station names to the line they were on will upset too many people. Globe, Oregon will rise again!
I was just in Central Oregon and am hoping to add to the knowledge bank after I back up my original research with some...research.
I lived in Olympia for a bit and had a project at TESC that involved Yelm and McKenna (glad to see it's still there). And I think I have some shirttail relations in Chehalis.
I don't usually wade into policy discussions but I'm wondering how hard it would be to work on improving WP:GEOLAND after the GNIS backlash dies down. (I swear there was a GNIS entry with a circular reference to something I wrote on Wikipedia, so I'm not too surprised it was deemed unreliable.)
I guess because WP:USEFUL, WP:NEGLECT, WP:HURT, WP:EVERYTHING and a bunch of other inadmissible arguments, I just don't get why we can't host a well-sourced short article on a tiny place name that appears on a map, that PEOPLE MIGHT WANT TO KNOW SOMETHING ABOUT! /rant
Thank you for your well-researched work on Washington places! Valfontis (talk) 17:23, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to participate in a research

[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team

Hallo

[edit]

Hallo Valfontis! My name is Angeliki Preza and I am new in wikipedia. I wrote an article about myself and so it was deleted. Your name was listed in the list that people can copy my deleted article to my user page. So can you help me? If yes, what is the procedure? Yours sincerely, Angeliki Preza Αγγελική Πρέζα (talk) 20:24, 6 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I can't do much if you don't give me a link to the article. It looks like the articles have been recreated: Draft:Αγγελική Πρέζα, Draft:Angeliki Preza. However, besides having an obvious conflict of interest, it also appears you are not notable enough to have an article about yourself. Please don't use Wikipedia for self-promotion. Again these articles haven't been deleted, and read what I wrote carefully, I already linked the articles in what I wrote. You also need to log in. Good luck, Valfontis (talk) 21:17, 6 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2024 Elections voter message

[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2024 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:09, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
