Can someone who has time to do a couple minutes of research and a couple edits e-mail me so I can forward you some info on something on which I have COI? Broadly construed, it's military history. Valfontis (talk) 21:56, 7 January 2015 (UTC)

Mayors

I'll help update the mayors if you tell me where you'd like me to begin. Finetooth (talk) 17:29, 13 January 2015 (UTC)

Thanks, but I finished them! If I can think of any more monotonous updating tasks I'll let you know! Valfontis (talk) 18:07, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
See my above note about TPS help, though. It's not meatpuppetry, I swear. Valfontis (talk) 18:08, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
Sure. I can do that. Finetooth (talk) 18:19, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
Happy to offer another set of eyes/neurons/typin' fingers if it helps. -Pete (talk) 18:35, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
Can I e-mail both of you together? i.e. Finetooth are you "out" to Pete? Valfontis (talk) 18:54, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
Yes. Finetooth (talk) 21:44, 13 January 2015 (UTC)

Roger that, over. Valfontis (talk) 21:48, 13 January 2015 (UTC)

speaking of places in Oregon...

...ever heard of Palestine, Oregon? There was a placemarker sign (shown here) when I was a kid, but Google streetview shows it is currently removed (if I remember correctly and it was at the intersection of Oak Grove and Palestine northwest of Albany). If I get a copy of OGN I'll be sure to look that up as well. 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 20:41, 13 January 2015 (UTC)

You name it, I've heard of it. It's an area of interest of mine. And I see you've found one of my favorite sources. :) Here's some info on the former Palestine church. Valfontis (talk) 21:01, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
I remember that church. I'm glad to know they didn't tear it down. Nearby there was another place marker called "Oak Grove" to the east of Oak Grove Elementary School on Oak Grove Drive, I think about where Karstens Lane is. I always wondered if they at one point had been considered true communities, and aspired to be someplace like Crabtree, Oregon, of if they were always thought of as neighborhood place names. Anyway, glad I made someone happy. It is out of my normal editing area, but my editing here does take some unexpected turns. 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 21:23, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
There is another Oak Grove, Oregon (need to disambiguate that) in Polk County that appears to consist of a (defunct) school, a church and a grange hall and that's it. I don't know what its status was either. I vote for "wide spot in the road". In my informal assessment, I think a true community needs those three things (give or take a grain elevator or a water tower) and a store. Crabtree even has a tavern and a p.o. so it's a real going concern! Cheers, Valfontis (talk) 21:34, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
Crabtree is definitely a going concern, there's no reason it couldn't incorporate as a city if it wanted to. My dad lived there for awhile when he was growing up. Palestine obviously had a church, I wouldn't doubt it had a grange hall, but I don't know about a school. There is still a cluster of houses there, but not historic structures, possible they could have replaced older buildings, they are smaller plot sizes than the surrounding area. Oak Grove, Benton County, had a school, and an old building which could have been a church or a grange hall (or perhaps both) but it was demolished when I was young. I never knew there to be any habitational concentration there, but that's why I'm interested, the past holds surprises. 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 22:01, 13 January 2015 (UTC)

New To Wiki

Hey there! Thank you kindly for your note regarding my user name. Now, I have spent the last hour reading about how to change user names, how to manage my own page, and how to be a better editor. I would like to take you up on your offer to obtain a new username, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do so. I have read through the Wikipedia:Questions page but the answers seem to be eluding me. Do I have to specifically ask someone for a name change? Or is there a link which I can do this easily myself?

Thanks again for all of your assistance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by PWPLA02 (talkcontribs) 18:59, 22 January 2015

(talk page stalker) I will explain how to CHU on the requester's talk page. JohnCD (talk) 22:41, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

Good sir, On the Merchant Hotel (Oregon) talk page I left a brief question about the name. Since then I found Merchants' Hotel at Warren Heywood Williams. Any thoughts? (Merchant's Hotel is not yet in use) Geirfuglasker (talk) 02:54, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

Why are you calling me sir? Please take a look at my user page. I'm trying fix something right now, I'll wait. Valfontis (talk) 02:55, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
I know it must drag along one of those obscure, Urban Dictionary meanings that can only cause one to shrink away and think silently, "How could I have been so stupid just then to use THAT word..." Then again, it grieves me even more to think that I might be the cause of your mood going from friendly to cranky. It might be best just to leave that on the table; thanks anyway. Geirfuglasker (talk) 03:39, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
I was already cranky. But even though approximately 90% of Wikipedia editors are male, it is narrow-minded to assume that the editor you are dealing with is male. That kind of thing makes me crankier. Unless you are Marcie. As far as the name of the Merchant Hotel, generally we go with whatever the NRHP calls it, though since this is a contributing property, it's not as big a deal and see also Sentinel Hotel (that name makes me cranky also). The two links I just added call it "Merchants Hotel". The plural gets more Google hits but that is including "Merchants' Hotel" and "Merchant's Hotel". A quick glance makes me think the plural without an apostrophe is more common, even if not correct. More research is needed. And some dabs and redirects it seems... Ed Teague at the UO might have an opinion. He was helpful in the matter of the name of the Hotel Ramapo. Valfontis (talk) 04:20, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
Oh that 90%; I apologize. In matters of gender identity pronouns, I am as clumsy as I am reckless, but I will get the hang of it. Thanks for looking into this hotel question that suddenly seems much less important. Geirfuglasker (talk) 05:16, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

This is rather hilarious. Apparently I'm a lunatic. You're welcome. Valfontis (talk) 14:04, 31 January 2015 (UTC)

That is hilarious! Good job Crazy Woman.
The marketing phrase The Encyclopedia that anyone can edit is widely construed by novices to mean The website that can have anything written and so new editors are surprised when their misinterpretation is corrected.
How the heck did you happen to notice that entry? —EncMstr (talk) 17:29, 31 January 2015 (UTC)
I was idly searching my username because I'm vain to see which of my subpages are being indexed on Google. Since I only share my name with a winery and a defunct post office, sometimes these things jump out at me! I can't believe that nut fascinating Astorian felt compelled to write a letter to the editor about me. Even more unbelievable that the Astorian published it! Valfontis (talk) 17:34, 31 January 2015 (UTC)
I have searched for my username a few times too. Thankfully it is so mangled random unique that it doesn't appear as anything else. Perhaps the publishing of this discredits the Astorian as a WP:RS?  :-) —EncMstr (talk) 17:50, 31 January 2015 (UTC)
Ha ha, yes! Valfontis (talk) 17:55, 31 January 2015 (UTC)

Edits regarding Aram Hampson

Valfontis -- I see you have made some recent edits to the article Aram Hampson. You removed a section of Aram Hampson#Early life stating that it was "unsourced". The original paragraph included: Hampson and his sister Githa Hampson are the only brother and sister to win multiple state championships in both cross-country and track and field. -- Removing it because it was "unsourced" is a poor excuse for the deletion of the sentence. I will be adding that sentence again when I find a source, which I know where to look for reliable sources. As much as I appreciate editors, this edit was unnecessary in my opinion. Regardless, CookieMonster755 (talk) 22:48, 1 February 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for the advice. Note you really don't need to write a message on each person's talk page who edits an article in which you have an interest. You might want to read up on conflict of interest and ownership of articles. Cheers, Valfontis (talk) 22:52, 1 February 2015 (UTC)
I don't know how Conflict of interest has to do with edits with the article. CookieMonster755 (talk) 23:22, 1 February 2015 (UTC)
It's just advice. Please read it. Valfontis (talk) 23:29, 1 February 2015 (UTC)

Apologies

Dear Valfontis -- I am very sorry for not being civil and kind. I completely understand why the article Aram Hampson should be deleted. I know you said its not necessary to post on your Talk Page about this, but I felt like I was rude and wanted to send an apologie. Thank you for helping out Wikipedia. CookieMonster755 (talk) 05:23, 3 February 2015 (UTC)

No worries. It's always a good idea to take a couple deep breaths and think it over before you write anything you might regret later. Valfontis (talk) 06:27, 3 February 2015 (UTC)

Oregon legislative updates

Not a problem. I doubt I'm going to get around to all of it, at least not anytime soon, so feel free to pitch in where you can. -Kudzu1 (talk) 06:15, 3 February 2015 (UTC)

I'm crap at getting around to it, but I bet @Esprqii: or @Peteforsyth: will help out eventually, right guys? Valfontis (talk) 06:16, 3 February 2015 (UTC)
I'm also super swamped lately but I totally will find some time to do it soon! I feel terrible that the new session started without waiting for my update. --Esprqii (talk) 15:31, 3 February 2015 (UTC)

Found a cool place name

I very much appreciate the details on Promise Oregon. MORBID curiosity, have you ever heard of, Old Glory Arizona??? (YUP, they had a post office as well) I plan to write it up soon, BUT I thought, Old Glory is just a great place name. I am most proud of Sweet Lips Tennessee.......Coal town guy (talk) 23:17, 5 February 2015 (UTC)

Sweet Lips, Tennessee?! Sweet. Nope, I pretty much stick with Oregon stuff. One of my favorite place names is Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. I'm old enough to remember the TV show (Bob Barker era)... In Oregon, Donnybrook has potential (OGN has half a page on the topic). It was just around the corner from Axehandle (a quarter page), which post office was called Kilts (half a page)... Hmm, looks like there needs to be some work done with redirects... Valfontis (talk) 23:40, 5 February 2015 (UTC)
Cool, my grandmother ws a postmaster in a coal town in West Virginia. As you can imagine, some of the town names were rather unusual or in some cases FUNNY....I got my Truth or Consequences postmark not too long ago, along with Tuba City and Happy Jack AZ.....I even felt inspired to provide a pic of the Red Devil Alaska Postmark as well as a Supai AZ postmark....far far away places. Red Devil has the distinction of shutting down their PO for a bit because (and I quote the postal record) nobody else wanted the job. I of course take special historic pride in Dwarf, KY, it was named after J Combs, a distant relative of smaller physical stature...Coal town guy (talk) 00:34, 6 February 2015 (UTC)

Ken Kesey portraits

Why have you removed the link to portraits? I read Lena Hades said she had a correspondence with him http://www.liveinternet.ru/community/lj_lena_hades/post321409656/ The portraits are excellent indeed Chuangzi (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 17:07, 8 February 2015 (UTC)

context
Please read WP:EL. The Kesey article attracts way too many external links. If we put every link in the external links section relating to Kesey it would defeat the purpose of the encyclopedia, since the encyclopedia is not a collection of links. I considered the link you added carefully, and per my edit summary, the link to the pics doesn't add anything to our knowledge of Kesey. I see that Lena Hades is notable in her own right, but that doesn't mean her drawings of Kesey are any more notable than someone else's pictures of Kesey. If for some reason the article didn't have any images the link to the drawings might be helpful but we already know what he looks like. I hope that explains. Valfontis (talk) 17:17, 8 February 2015 (UTC)

Understood, thank you for your reply! Chuangzi (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 17:32, 8 February 2015 (UTC)

Oregon Government Ethics Commission

Are you planning to start a page for Oregon Government Ethics Commission? I noticed you added the redlink to Mike Nearman. -Kudzu1 (talk) 00:42, 14 February 2015 (UTC)

Not anytime soon. But with things going the way they are I'm sure we'll need an article for it. See also "what links here" and WP:REDLINK. Valfontis (talk) 00:45, 14 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi, Valfontis! I just reverted another IP edit at Bobbi Kristina. I think it's time for semiprotection but I'm away from my computer and have no tools on this account. Can you handle it? If not I can do it a couple of hours from now. Thanks. MelanieN alt (talk) 03:14, 20 February 2015 (UTC)

Should this one be renamed Williams Avenue to conform to the other streets in the Portland Streets category and template? If it needs a new name please fix it, and by extension if the article has deeper, more troublesome issues please advise. Geirfuglasker (talk) 07:55, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

(context: {{Streets in Portland, Oregon}}) I don't see why you need to rename it per WP:COMMONNAME, the only reason would be if there was also a South Williams Avenue, and a quick Google doesn't reveal any such street. I did learn that Quarterflash has a song called "Williams Avenue". Valfontis (talk) 19:43, 22 February 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, that's good enough for me. The Quarterflash song will be mentioned in a new section. What nice violin and guitar riffs at just over the 3-minute mark, and the lyrics describe the neighborhood as it used to be. Geirfuglasker (talk) 22:02, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

I had already fixed it. I'm an admin, I do kinda know what I'm doing at least half the time. Valfontis (talk) 19:06, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
Good to know :-) I guess I was mouse-clicking faster than you were adminning. 19:10, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
Apology accepted. By the way, the instructions at WP:BEFORE and at Template:Afdx say to use "2nd". It autofills whatever you put after the pipe, I'm not sure where you saw the instructions to put just "2". Valfontis (talk) 19:17, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
Never looked into instructions before; worked for me. (looked now, thanks) Staszek Lem (talk) 19:41, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

Senate Bill deletion

Context: Oregon Senate Bill 166

Hello Valfontis. You are sure quick to judge. Senate bills are not notable? What a joke. Explain this:

and there are a lot of other bills on this Wikipedia, and if bills are not notable, you better delete all of them, you Smart aleck! CookieMonster755 (talk) 04:39, 3 March 2015 (UTC)

Fine, just delete the article alreay. You win this battle. CookieMonster755 (talk) 04:52, 3 March 2015 (UTC).
Cookie Monster, you have been warned repeatedly about your tone and civility. You may not be aware, but your tone is rude and snotty. I'm going to have to ask you to not post on my talk page any more. I am quick to judge because I am an adult with 9 years of experience on Wikipedia. I also happened to work at the State Legislature so I understand legislation. What you are doing is giving a "other crap exists" argument. The bills you've cited were all passed into law, which may make them notable, and I note the Oregon and Calfornia ones are considered landmark legislation, and the Texas one caused a lot of public debate. SB 166 hasn't even been heard in committee yet. It may not ever be heard in committee, as it was passed onto Rules over a month ago. At this point it is non-notable per WP:GNG. If you need further help, please ask at the Teahouse or WikiProject Oregon. You may link to this discussion but I no longer wish to communicate with you. Good luck. Valfontis (talk) 04:59, 3 March 2015 (UTC)
P.S. You need to learn that Wikipedia is not a battleground--instead, we have rules and guidelines, and if your articles don't meet our standards, it doesn't mean you are losing. Please heed what people like @MelanieN: and @Acroterion: have talked to you about. Valfontis (talk) 04:59, 3 March 2015 (UTC)

Kate Brown and Mahonia Hall

No indication she has moved in yet, but she has said she will: [1]

On a purely "scuttlebutt" note, my in-laws apparently saw her at a furniture store this weekend. -Kudzu1 (talk) 08:05, 8 March 2015 (UTC)

Oh, I missed that, thanks! I don't always read the local rag, they can't seem to get the physical one to my house and I hate reading the news online. It's not news unless I hear it on OPB. I found a couple articles that I can use to expand the house article. Apparently Mary Oberst called it "Pneumonia Hall"--this amuses me to no end. Valfontis (talk) 16:03, 8 March 2015 (UTC)

Hidden Valley HS

Hidden Valley High School (Oregon) does not indicate that it is located in Hidden Valley. There are hundreds (maybe more) of schools that are named similarly. Thanks –Aidan721 (talk) 00:20, 9 March 2015 (UTC)

See WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. The Oregon ones are all named consistently and via consensus. That was the naming convention 9 years ago. If we want to change it it will have to be discussed. And all the schools in List of high schools in Oregon will need to be reevaluated. See also my note on your talk page. Valfontis (talk) 02:39, 9 March 2015 (UTC)

Kbabej

I am not sure why now (and I am not going to go back over my interaction with Kbabej to work it out), but I had assumed that Kbabej was female. Given the amount of young (and not so young) testosterone in the air around ANI, I sympathise with (although do not condone) anyone who states "I created a new account to report another user for disruptive editing, believing that I would be harassed after the report" (21:46, 12 February 2015), and if Kbabej was socking for the first time then I would have supported a warning with or without a short block (as was administered by Salvio giuliano on 16 March 2014). But the quote I gave on Kbabej's talk page puts this second bout of socking in a whole different category as I implied in my posting to Kbabej's talk page. -- PBS (talk) 11:39, 17 March 2015 (UTC)

OK, PBS, I was just curious if it was an assumption based on his username or something. I won't further violate his privacy by defining any groups he may belong to, but I'm 99% sure he's male. In my experience (noting that I mostly edit in non-controversial areas) most people who complain about harassment on the wiki are in fact not being harassed but instead their edits aren't up to community standards and they don't like hearing that. This is from someone who has had her livelihood and safety threatened by someone who tried to out her, so I'm absolutely not saying that Wikipedia cannot be a hostile place for women to edit. I guess I'm just concerned that you think "I socked because I felt unsafe" could be used as an excuse, when in fact there are other channels for dealing with legitimate harassment. I'm having trouble articulating why this bothers me, I guess because my contributions are pretty much competent, notable, etc., and also I don't discuss my gender unless necessary (see "hostile place" above), so I'm not sure I've experienced the kind of harassment you thought he was experiencing and I don't want to speak for all female editors. I guess my take on it is "policy is policy", and maybe female editors can take care of themselves without resorting to violating policy? I'd be happy to hear from anyone who has a contrary opinion. Happy editing, Valfontis (talk) 18:02, 17 March 2015 (UTC)
My assumption was not based on recent developments, it was based on my interaction with the editor over a couple of pages back in January so I would not bet a beer that my initial assumption was right. I do not think it is only females who dislike the ANI environment, and I also know one or two women who edit Wikiepdia who are more than capable of initiating a dog fight at ANI if they think it is to their advantage. I am very concerned that ANI is not fit for purpose other than for the most simple of cases (see this example posed on 8 February 2012) and I think as time passes it is becoming less so. -- PBS (talk) 23:14, 17 March 2015 (UTC)
Hmm, I think I have a Hungerford ancestor or two... But yes, ANI isn't a fit place for human or dog, of any gender. I've only used it of late to have possible legal threats checked out. Thanks for the link to the example discussion. Valfontis (talk) 00:05, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

I know Kbabej in "real life" and need to investigate further why this individual's account was blocked. ---Another Believer (Talk) 20:22, 21 March 2015 (UTC)

Feel free. I think it was justified. It was for unrepentant socking. See User talk:Kbabej starting at about User talk:Kbabej#February 2015 and Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Kbabej. Maybe you can talk some sense into them. Valfontis (talk) 20:46, 21 March 2015 (UTC)

Re: OSU NRHP District

Good to know. How interesting that there is a university NRHP District. We'll have to track down the NRHP nomination form and see which sites are included, then add then appropriate existing articles to WikiProject NRHP so they can keep an eye on their progress as well. I went to both U of O and OSU the other day for Wikipedia presentations, which went well. It was my first time to OSU and a did a little exploring, hence the new articles. :) ---Another Believer (Talk) 20:21, 21 March 2015 (UTC)

Hi, Valfontis. Regarding your edit in Sherman Skolnick, the anti-Catholic bit is a bit over the top but it appears as though the CT label has been applied by many others. I've included three academic sources that refer to it.(diff) Feel free to edit it as you see fit. Cheers! -Location (talk) 00:05, 3 April 2015 (UTC)

Thanks. I'll buy the conspiracy theorist bit but since I have some COI on this (my friend was a good friend of Skolnick's) I'd want some really good sources for the anti-Catholic bigot part and I would also ask for some third opinions. Thanks again. Valfontis (talk) 00:35, 3 April 2015 (UTC)
I have seen a few threads pop up recently as to whether it is OK to label someone a "conspiracy theorist". You may find some of these in WP:NPOVN or WP:FTN. Some argue that is is OK to state "X is a conspiracy theorist" whereas other prefer something like "X has been described as a conspiracy theorist". It would be nice if there was some large-scale discussion on this.
I think SS had a few conspiracy theories involving the Pope and the Vatican, but "anti-Catholic bigot" likely is not accurate. - Location (talk) 03:28, 3 April 2015 (UTC)
Oh, I agree, he was definitely a conspiracy theorist. I have no problem with that (the label). It's not necessarily a slur. My friend would probably disagree but I'm trying to tread the middle ground here. Thanks for the note, I'll likely not be able to revisit this for a while. Valfontis (talk) 11:14, 3 April 2015 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Original Barnstar
The Z. Vanessa Helder article is great! I create a stub for her last year which got promptly deleted. Had I put as much effort as you into the article, however, I'm sure it wouldn't have been. vr rm 17:39, 12 April 2015 (UTC)
Aw, @Vrrm:, that's very nice of you, but I only did some copy editing (which I didn't even get around to finishing), you really should give this barnstar to @Tomseattle:. I noticed it because I created Women Painters of Washington and I have it set up to notify me if anyone links to that article. Cheers. Valfontis (talk) 18:06, 12 April 2015 (UTC)

Thanks vr rm and Valfontis! Thinking of doing an Yvonne Twining Humber article next. It's been fun for me learning about great regional artists other than the famous Northwest Mystics and Asian-American artists (as much as I like them, too). Tomseattle (talk) 15:54, 19 April 2015 (UTC)

Covered Wagon

Took a break from Portland sculptures to add Covered Wagon to the project. I'll have to create another for the L&C/Sacajawea relief on the other side of the main entrance and then see what other Salem sculptures need articles. These sorts of articles are pretty easy to promote to GA status since there is only so much info about outdoor sculptures. Enjoy! ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:46, 22 April 2015 (UTC)

Update: Also Dr. John McLoughlin (sculpture) + Lewis and Clark (sculpture) + Over the Top to Victory. I'm not entirely sure I understand the relationship between the McLoughlin statue in Salem and the one in DC (the Smithsonian source is a little ambiguous), but I'll try to do more research soon! ---Another Believer (Talk) 03:58, 25 April 2015 (UTC)
