[edit]No longer want to be reminded that this was my very first outreach on Wikipedia...
Chehalis, Washington revert?!
[edit]Hey, Cheerful Squirrel...
I guess you've been around a lot longer under other names but wow...like holy wow...you removed my entire edit because I added a line break? I mean, that's it...I separated the opening paragraph from one into two. And my entire +2,000 edit has to go!? Which also reverted a second follow-up edit?!
Like, total wow. Not even joking. Gonna need you to fix that revert.Shortiefourten (talk) 02:46, 28 June 2021 (UTC)
- I'm going to take a break for a week or so and get some coaching on how to do better. I'm really sorry about this. Cheerful Squirrel (talk) 03:01, 28 June 2021 (UTC)
No worries...I knew you'd change it back. I was joking/laughing as I wrote to you, I mean, how could you not, over a spacebar move! Good luck in your future coaching!Shortiefourten (talk) 03:13, 28 June 2021 (UTC)
Howdy. I thought your draft for this was really good. I would have moved it directly to article space myself but it needs to be requested at WP:RM#TR, as a redirect is in the way. Anyway, congrats on the article. --- Possibly ☎ 03:09, 14 August 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks so much, Possibly ☎! Like you, looks like a couple of other editors have done some work already on the draft so things are moving along for my very first article creation attempt. I swear I'll figure out how to add photos correctly one day...I'm 20 years into almost figuring it out in Microsoft Word, so any day now! If I can ask of your experience, do I do anything about the redirect or is that something an admin should take care of without my inexperienced meddling? --- Shortiefourten (talk) 15:46, 14 August 2021 (UTC)

Chehalis Gophers - Thank You
[edit]Thanks so much for the "Thanks" and for awarding me the Barnstars regarding the creation of the Chehalis Gophers page!! I greatly appreciate your passion for the region and your work on Wikipedia. If you do create an article section on Millet Field, that would be excellent, it appears that there is some interesting history regarding the park. Keep up the great wiki work! Chehalis
[edit]No worries. The thing to keep in mind is that the AFC process was initiated because far too many new editors were creating articles that weren't even remotely ready to actually be in articlespace, because the notability and/or the sourcing weren't even close to where where they needed to be. But if the process were "create draft and then move it yourself as soon as you're technically able to move pages", that would still defeat the entire purpose: people only have to make ten edits to Wikipedia before the move right is opened up, and an editor can literally make ten edits within one or two minutes of registering a new username, so draftspace wouldn't be an even remotely effective control because no page would ever actually be stopped by it. So drafts have to be reviewed by AFC reviewers, not just moved by their own creators within a day or two of being created.
I would also ask you to think a little bit about whether an international encyclopedia really needs an article about every individual city park in a small city of just 7,000 people. Parks aren't all automatically entitled to have Wikipedia articles just because they exist — when it comes to run of the mill topics like streets or parks or buildings, where there are literally millions or even billions of them in the world about which very, very similar articles could also be written, getting a topic like that into Wikipedia isn't so much a question of just verifying a few facts about it, but of demonstrating a reason why its existence is much more special than most other examples of the same class of topic. That is, the question isn't "would this article about a park in Chehalis be interesting for a resident of Chehalis to read?", so much as "would this article about a park in Chehalis be important for a resident of New York City to read?" What's the reason why somebody on the other side of the country, or even the world, should consider the park across the street from your house to be considerably more important than the park across the street from their house? Opened a question for this decline over at that action desk thing...no worries. I understand where you're coming from. Thought it would be easier to list why I did what I did over there. If I need to spin them off on to separate pages, no problem!
Thanks for the review and approving the other two. Have a great one!
Shortiefourten (talk) 17:34, 20 February 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Shortiefourten, I see this got straightened out. I suggest creating redirects for each park to that article so if someone searches for John Dobson Park, for example, they will directed the article. No need to submit them to AfC for review. If you need help, just ping me. Thanks your for contributions and sorry for the confusion on this one. S0091 (talk) 16:22, 21 February 2022 (UTC)
- I accepted John Dobson and McFadden Parks and Parks and recreation in Chehalis, Washington because they never should have been returned to draft space in the first place. And because whatever problems they may have had then, they would now survive an Articles for Deletion nomination. If anyone does that to your work again, you can accept it and go through the Articles for creation process (sometimes good advice can come out of it), or you can object, as described in WP:DRAFTIFY.
- Despite acceptance for publication, the two articles can still be improved. I agree with S0091 that readers will be slow to grasp why two parks are covered in one article. Your posting on the Afc help page made it clearer than the article does. The lead of the broader list article is also a bit awkward. People have framed the topic (and titled their articles) many different ways for different localities. Unfortunately, there are few good or featured articles/lists to follow. Yours is a bit like List of areas in the United States National Park System, but that may not be the best fit. Afc is ill-suited to these sorts of improvements. The prospects for improvement are better in article space. Good luck with them, and thanks for starting them. --Worldbruce (talk) 06:07, 22 February 2022 (UTC)

Disagreement with deletionists
[edit]Hi @Shortiefourten: I saw your recent changes to U.S. Route 12 in Washington, and saw that your changes were reverted because WP:NOTGUIDE. That made me want to save off the paragraph you added somewhere, so I looked on Wikivoyage (which ISGUIDE, I believe), and found (what I think is) a vaguely correct place to put it. See wikivoyage:Talk:Lewis and Clark Trail for my comment on the subject. I decided to look at your user page (User:Shortiefourten) to see if you were likely to go over to Wikivoyage and add changes there. I found that this wasn't your first encounter with deletionists, and that you already seem to be pretty experienced as an editor. That made me sad, because I'm more of an inclusionist myself, and have frequently found myself frustrated with deletionists in my twenty+ years of editing. I took one of the pages you highlighted ("Ruth, Washington"), and copied one of the last versions you worked on to "User:RobLa/Ruth, Washington". If you're interested in working on a "notable" version of "Ruth, Washington", I'd be happy to work with you on that. I'm an admin, and can undelete Ruth, Washington and move it to Draft:Ruth, Washington, working on it with you (and hopefully others) until we feel comfortable moving it back into the main namespace. Do you want to do that (rather than merely mourning the deletion of Ruth, Washington)? -- RobLa (talk) 00:41, 1 July 2023 (UTC)
- Hey RobLa,
- Seems like we'd make a fine pair of editors to work together! I've added the reborn page to my User:Shortiefourten/sandbox. Thanks, thanks, THANKS!
- I'm not bent out of shape about the Ruth article but I would not want to see a locale lost to history (especially on an encyclopedic site?!) based on strict opinions of notability that cannot be overruled because of the imbalance of deletionist power under the BRD process. Based on my research, there isn't much out there about the location. The issue for me was I was unaware of the WP:GNIS listings and coupled with some census items and brief news articles from decades past, felt it qualified as a town/community page. Turns out, it was probably just a railway station with a few local residents at best. I'm looking for the best place to merge it with - at the Lewis County, Washington page under a subsection or creating a WA state list of rail stations, which is not my expertise at all! But thank you for saving it...if you can find more, then awesome sauce, LET'S DO THIS!...otherwise I'll be able to use what you brought back from the dead to add somewhere else...it does not deserve to be forgotten!
- As for the US Route 12 issue, the EV chargers is a first of it's kind installation...I disagree that it's equivalent to listing every gas station on the route...maybe in 20 years when EV chargers are everywhere! However, this reverted edit is not a deletionist issue but par-for-the-course with this particular editor towards my editing and I am not going to get into a spat over it. I've lost my cool over this editor before, and even though I feel hounded and there are, to me, clear WP:OWN issues, I just don't have the capacity to deal with him anymore.
- Wikivoyage is very cool and I use it as a reader myself but with limited time as it is just to edit here, I'm not sure I could give it any attention but feel free to add that paragraph if you feel it fits (with my permission? that sounds weird, but seriously, have at it!). I agree with what you wrote here and at that talk page.
- Thanks for reaching out! Sometimes it can feel very lonely and one-sided here until you see that there are others out there who think as you do (and may have your back!). Go INCLUSIONISTS!
- Excellent work that you've accomplished along the way. Truly impressive!
- Shortiefourten (talk) 18:53, 3 July 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Shortiefourten; I restored the page to Draft:Ruth, Washington (and the talk page (Draft talk:Ruth, Washington) and found at least one book source on archive.org. I suspect there are others to be found with the right searches over there. I'll keep an eye on the article, and potentially help with a move back to the main namespace when we feel like it's ready for another move. (p.s. I feel your pain vis a vis WP:OWN; I have a long history with U.S. Route 12 in Washington, both in real life and the article). -- RobLa (talk) 22:43, 3 July 2023 (UTC)
Friendly suggestion
[edit]Have you considered trying out the Simple English Wikipedia? There are less deletionists there, and it really needs help with its coverage of rural Washington. The article on Chehalis there is a two-liner stub! Basically, I think you would enjoy editing there, and the site could really use an editor like you. QuicoleJR (talk) 18:32, 2 July 2023 (UTC)
- Hey Q JR,
- With my time already limited, I'm very doubtful I could fit in the editing time to help out there...and I'm waaaaaay to wordy for "simple"! I'm not too worried about deletionists here...just feeling hounded by one editor.
- Thanks for thinking I've got the right stuff! Keep up the good work and see you around!

[edit]Hi Shortiefourten!
Thanks so much for the note and kind words! Glad to have you back making wiki contributions!
There are so many colorful and interesting things that are associated with minor league teams and their history. Your ballplayer minstrel show research is great little nugget! It is fascinating, hilarious and so unique all at the same time. Yes, I think it is intriguing part of the Chehalis Gophers history of the team and most certainly worth including on the team page. Theaters in Chehalis
[edit]Hello! Glad you are still active. I was looking at your draft for the History of theaters in Chehalis, Washington, and it looks pretty good. There is one thing, though, and that is the name of the article. I looked at a few other articles, and precedent would name this Theater in Chehalis, Washington or List of theaters in Chehalis, Washington. There are currently no articles using the "History of theater in X" style, while we do have Theatre in the United Kingdom, Theater in the United States, Theater in Chicago, List of theatres in California, and List of theaters in Colorado, to name a few. Other than that, it looks like a great article! Thanks, QuicoleJR (talk) 16:24, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
- Hey QuicoleJR!
- Long time and, wow, your edit count skyrocketed!
- Not sold on what the title should be either: History of Theaters is true but doesn't match titles, as you mention, in limited similar-ish articles. Shortening to Theater seems (for me) to define it more about production or shows but the Chicago article certainly helps dissuade me of that a bit. Since I'm still finding sourcing and needing to curate down to leave out some over-detailing, I've got some time to figure it out. I agree, though...it is a great article!
- Hope all is well. By the way, thanks to you asking about MyNorthwest.com as a source, it's a hell of a lot better than I thought. Used it a few times since.
- Thanks for reading my draft!

Toledo crosswind runway
[edit]Hey there, I was happy to see a big revamp of the Toledo airport (er, South Lewis County Airport) article. It's nice to know someone is working on pages in that region. I did remove the "crosswind" claim, because it's hard to know cause and effect on several things there. Was it built to intentionally not be aligned with prevailing winds, or was that a requirement from the terrain or available land? Further, was it built for military pilot training in mind, or was used for that later? Was it built into crosswinds for military pilots or was it "discovered" to be useful for that after being built?
I wanted to drop you a note rather than make it appear to be starting a "comment by edit war" type thing. tedder (talk) 19:22, 10 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hey @tedder!
- I've flown from airports but an expert on flying it does not make me! No concerns over edit warring - clearly you have aircraft/port/stuff experience so I defer graciously! I wrote as it was stated in the source - basically, yep, it was built at the beginning intentionally to be a crosswind runway for the intent to train pilots. Military specifically, the ref doesn't state and there's no mention of any topography issues...nor does any other source.
- If you think it comes across as confusing or the cause/effect needs more sourcing, by all means, let's leave it as you feel best. It seemed an odd, fun tidbit (the source mentions it to be unusual) but unlike my husband, not married to it!
- Thanks for the kind words and on a side note, a truly impressive history you have there. Thank you for your tough and unfortunately-not-thanked-enough efforts! Shortiefourten (talk) 19:34, 10 July 2024 (UTC)
- Yeah, I focus on the Oregon stuff but adopt Washington articles as well. Plus I'm interested in the airports I've been flying into, and sometimes I stumble across one and dig into it. I'm finding that airports are often missing written history and they have stories for little communities. Let me know if I can help with any articles, glad to meet you (so to speak). tedder (talk) 19:41, 10 July 2024 (UTC)

Skookumchuck Dam
[edit]Hello! If you happen to have a chance, some pictures of the Skookumchuck Dam would enhance the flood article as well as a few others I see you have been active in building. DJ Cane (he/him) (Talk) 20:15, 16 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hey DJ Cane!
- Been awhile...the new photos on the Chehalis flood article look good and makes the page pop. I've tried finding federal guvmint photos (USGS/FEMA, et all) but no real luck but I'll keep looking. It's all on my Wiki-work list...everytime I cross something off, I add another 2 inches (51 mm) to it.
- You see the conversion to mm's, there?
- Again, solid work as always!
- Shortiefourten (talk) 17:19, 17 October 2024 (UTC)
- The conversion to mm is a nice touch. I meant if you have a chance and feel the motivation to, it would be neat if you drove out to the dam to get some pictures. Glad you like the picture edits. DJ Cane (he/him) (Talk) 17:25, 17 October 2024 (UTC)
