[edit]Hi. When you recently edited List of United Kingdom locations: Gab-Gan, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Galltair and Gamston, Nottinghamshire (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

[edit]Hi, I'm impressed that you were able to find a meaning in that amazing statement! Just wanted to mention that I came across this while chasing the source of a copyright violation that dates from 2007 (now fixed), so I won't follow up with the perp. Caddy (disambiguation) cleanup
[edit]Hi,
You removed the {{Disambiguation cleanup}} tag from Caddy (disambiguation) indicating "no justification provided for need for clean-up". Per the documentation for the template, I provided a resaon for the cleanup in my edit summary. The article does have entries which are duvious, and has excess linking which is in contravention of the manual of style which specifies one blue link for entry. -- Whpq (talk) 19:55, 9 July 2012 (UTC)
- I've just done a cleanup on that page.
I'd guess your impressively extensive editing has run mostly to articles, and it of course it would be bizarre not to expect such experience to give one the right instincts about editing Dab pages & abt critiquing them (or other's tags on them); it is especially attractive in light of Dab pages almost always residing in the main namespace (usually called "the Article namespace"). Nevertheless, Dabs are not articles, and almost everything about their care and feeding is at WP:Dab and WP:MoSDab, even if it duplicates guidance found elsewhere, or implicitly or explicitly creates exceptions to any expectation that article-applicable guidance applies equally to Dab pages.
Perhaps most compellingly, my recollections suggest strongly that the majority of Dab-CU placements are made with edit summaries shorter than the one by our colleague, like my own bald "+tag for needed Dab-CU". (While i do not suggest my own practice is normative, i think my tendency -- whether re a Dab or article -- toward unusual length in the ed-summs, <!-- --> comments embedded in the page near a change i've made, and/or long explanations on the corresponding Talk-namespace page, may help persuade you to take seriously my endorsement of our colleague's tagging of the Dab in question.)
If you find a desire to better understand this somewhat esoteric stuff, browsing the relevant talk pages (WikiProj Dab, Dab, & MoSDab) probably provides the gentlest starting point. Also, if you would like, let's give a shot to my trying to answer your questions about why i chose such-and-such a change, in my cleanup of Caddy (disambiguation).
In any case, thanks for taking an interest in at least that particular Dab.

The editor whom you asked to slow down
[edit]I noticed your comment on the relevant talk page and that editor's reply to you. Looking at the pattern of rapid fire editing and the pedantic, nay punctilious, nature of the edits leads me to wonder if the editor might be positioned somewhere here. I have reinforced your message asking the editor to slow down. Fiddle Faddle (talk) 23:01, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

- I am sure he will. Odd that we both assume the editor to be male, but the behaviour does appear to be. It may be that the message requires a further reinforcement. I am also wondering, since he has obvious WP knowledge and skills from the get go, whether this is a sock. Fiddle Faddle (talk) 07:33, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

- Following on from that: the edit concerned is this one, where you did a lot more than simply removing a hatnote as claimed by the edit summary. You introduced a lot of deprecated or even obsolete wiki markup, such as linked dates and years; the
|accessdaymonth=
and|accessyear=
parameters; day of month with leading zero; use of|date=1998
etc. instead of|year=1998
etc.;|id=ISBN 079382785X
instead of|isbn=079382785X
. You also removed a lot of other info, such as|archiveurl=
and|archivedate=
parameters and most of the interlanguage links. Was this a script-assisted edit? If so, the script is seriously in need of an upgrade. --Redrose64 (talk) 23:08, 31 October 2012 (UTC)- I think I worked it out... you seem to have reverted all the way back to the version of 13:33, 10 August 2007 - more than five years ago. I wasn't sure what to do with this when I was cleaning up the page, so I dumped it on the disambiguation page. Definitely the wrong place to put it, and I apologize. But even if it doesn't belong there, it doesn't seem like deleting it entirely is a very responsible thing to do. Now information on this subject with this meaning does not appear anywhere in Wikipedia. So I am dumping it again, this time on your talk page.
- It is also a safe breaking (safe cracking) tool from the Victorian era, consisting of a heavy brass stock with two sets of barrels, the large one on top and the small one below. The device was clamped to the frame of the safe's door. A large steel screw would then be driven into the safe's lock, or between the safe's door and its frame. Either the frame buckled or the lock failed as the pressure exerted by the device was reputedly up-to three tons.

The article Marc Maiffret has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- May not meet notability standards.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Eye bath
[edit]The reason I added it to Category:Temporary maintenance holdings is that there's a system bug such that whenever someone converts a soft redirect into a real article (which is what happened in the edit I reverted immediately before that), even after it gets reverted back to a redirect again the system tools stop bypassing it like they usually do with soft redirects. Instead, they start treating the page as an uncategorized article, picking it up on all the maintenance tools that the categorization project uses to do its work — and once that's happened there's no other way to make the page ever drop from the uncategorized articles list (null edits don't work, deleting and restoring the page doesn't work, etc.) except by finding a way to actually "categorize" it.
The uncategorized article tools have to be kept clean, and we can't leave the article sitting as a permanent speedbump that has to be perennially worked around. We have to do whatever we have to do to make sure the page stays off the uncats list, because bots or inexperienced users who work with the uncat tools will sometimes end up actually tagging it in error. And that's why Category:Temporary maintenance holdings even exists in the first place — there are a few types of issues where we can't file a page in normal content categories, but still have to do something to prevent the other problems that arise from leaving it uncategorized. So at least until the bug actually gets fixed, the page does have to be added to the maintenance category.
Trust me, I don't go around adding that category willy-nilly to every soft redirect under the sun — I added it to that specific page because it's actually causing a specific problem that can't yet be fixed any other way. Bearcat (talk) 18:31, 28 July 2013 (UTC)
From the documentation for the template:
- Do not use this template on disambiguation pages that contain a list of people by family name. Instead categorize the disambiguation page by including the surname parameter with the {{Disambiguation}} template. For example, {{Disambiguation|surname}}. This will include the disambiguation page in Category:Surnames.

In this edit in 2007 you added several place names, including Bridge Field. An article has now been created, but it's only a stub and there's not enough information to identify its location. I've tried maps and search engines and could only find a business and a similarly named farm in different parts of Cumbria. Do you have a source for the list? Peter James (talk) 14:44, 14 October 2013 (UTC)
- The source for the list is http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/time-zone/europe/uk/england/county/cumbria/index.htm - however I don't recommend it! I was using it to flesh out county lists but it has too many places that have little or no other information available. Possibly because of the nature of its geography Cumbria was the hardest of the 3 or 4 counties I tried to use it for, before abandoning the exercise. I tried to omit places that had no other Wikipedia presence; but either Bridge Field was an error on my part or its substantiating other link has been deleted. Disambiguation link fixing one-day contest
[edit]I have decided to put on a mini-contest within the November 2013 monthly disambiguation contest, on Saturday, November 23 (UTC). I will personally give a $20 Amazon.com gift card to the disambiguator who fixes the most links on that server-day (see the project page for details on scoring points). Since we are not geared up to do an automated count for that day, at 00:00, 23 November 2013 (UTC) (which is 7:00 PM on November 22, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the project page leaderboard. I will presume that anyone who is not already listed on the leaderboard has precisely nine edits. At 01:00, 24 November 2013 (UTC) (8:00 PM on November 23, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the leaderboard at that time (the extra hour is to give the board time to update), and I will determine from that who our winner is. I will credit links fixed by turning a WP:DABCONCEPT page into an article, but you'll have to let me know me that you did so. Here's to a fun contest. Note that according to the Daily Disambig, we currently have under 256,000 disambiguation links to be fixed. If everyone in the disambiguation link fixers category were to fix 500 links, we would have them all done - so aim high! Cheers! bd2412 T 02:32, 18 November 2013 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of Country cousin
[edit]If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Country cousin requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A5 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article consists of a dictionary definition or other article that has been transwikied to another project and the author information recorded.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, you can place a request here. Finealt (talk) 21:08, 10 December 2013 (UTC)

Misinformation on bafta best actress article
[edit]Hi..i've noticed you had made substantial edits to the Bafta best actor article, so i'm drawing your attention to the shambles that is the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role article. The user HesioneHushabye (talkpage here talk) has persisted in providing false information about the award; the user has ignored the fact there were TWO categories (Best British Actress, Best Foreign Actress) from 1952 to 1967, has ommitted Best British Actress (not only is that wrong, but the reason; "the award is defunct".....errr...so is "Best Foreign Actress", which he not only kept in, but put it among the "Best Actress" award which was created in 1968 when both British and Foreign awards were merged). I restored the correct information that existed on the page prior to his arbitrary intervention. I assumed good faith edits at the beginning and explained the best actress article should provide the same correct information that the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role does. The user has arbitrarily made up his own category (best foreign actress as being "best actress") ignoring the official Bafta site itself which I provided. An awards table is not up for discussion, it's black and white; arbitrarily deciding personal criteria (which is what the user has done) has no place on an awards table. — Chie one (talk) 06:35, 11 Jan 2014 The user above wishes to make mere cosmetic changes to the page that are not needed, all of this is clearly explained at the top of the page and has been the same format with no other editors having problems with it for a long time. The user above is mis-interpreting the history of the awards and the information on the page. The nominees and winners for "Best British Actress" are indeed listed, on their own separate page. The page does not have to mirror the Best Actor page. HesioneHushabye (talk) 05:52, 11 January 2014 (UTC)
- Err.. why not have "Best Foreign Actress" on it's own "separate page"?. As I said, an awards table is not up for discussion, it's black and white; arbitrarily deciding personal criteria (which is what the user has done) has no place on an awards table. The page was unchanged for years and provided the same correct information as Bafta for best actor did...until the users arbitrary intervention. To have Best foreign actress (which is also defunct by the way) alongside best actress is wrong. Bafta's official site or a wiki user making up their own criteria? hmmm. The Best actor page has it correct, there is no misinformation or made up criteria. — Chie one (talk) 07:10, 11 Jan 2014
Your reasoning makes no sense. it's purely cosmetic. Having them separate makes the page cleaner and less confusing and it's all outlined at the top of the page. The information on the BAFTA site and what's on the page are infact the same. Your whining about the pages being separate is silly and no other users or editors have complained since I created the new pages and tables a long time ago. HesioneHushabye (talk) 07:28, 11 January 2014 (UTC)

The article William Finnie (professor) has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no references. Under Wikipedia policy, this newly created biography of a living person will be deleted unless it has at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.
If you created the article, please don't be offended. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Referencing for beginners, or ask at the help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. Reflist presentation
[edit]Hello Saga City. I can't see how the change you made in this edit has manifested in the article; could you illuminate? PaleCloudedWhite (talk) 22:33, 2 April 2015 (UTC)
- On my screen it split the list of references into 3 columns rather than 1. However, as I understand it, the effect depends on the size of the font, the width of the screen and any picture so it is thus preferable to the cruder Reflist|2 or Reflist|3 that forces the number of columns. As I'm no techie this is the best answer I can give, but hope it clarifies things. S a g a C i t y (talk) 08:33, 3 April 2015 (UTC)
- Following this up - I've been 'playing' with font sizes on the Yetminster page. Increasing the size of the font reduces the number of columns; unsurprisingly reducing the size of the font increases the number of columns. So it seems I was right. S a g a C i t y (talk) 08:44, 3 April 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks. Both versions look the same on my screen with my preferences (actually I've never altered my preferences, so they must be on a default setting). Presumably when more refs are added in that article, at some point the list will split on my screen too, even if I don't change font size... PaleCloudedWhite (talk) 09:02, 3 April 2015 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Deanery of Alresford
[edit]If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Deanery of Alresford requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), web content or organised event, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.
Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on Doings requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, images, a rephrasing of the title, a question that should have been asked at the help or reference desks, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. The article IVV has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- This page started out as a redirect to Volksmarching. It was then changed to a DAB page when iShares was added. Later IVV (Business) was added saying it was a part of Balfour Beatty. Volksmarching was the first one removed. None of the three pages that have been on the DAB page actually contain "IV". I can not find anywhere to redirect this to and it doesn't meet the need for a DAB page.

Do not create articles about living people that are entirely negative in tone and unsourced. Wikipedia has a policy of verifiability and any negative information we use must be reliably sourced, and our articles must be balanced. Negative, unreferenced biographies of living people, along with attack pages, are not tolerated by Wikipedia, and users who create or repost such pages and images in violation of our biographies of living persons policy may be blocked from editing. [edit]Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited William Goring, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Shoreham (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Hi. I'm contacting you because you wrote a comment about the above article seven years ago (!!), on the off-chance that you may still be interested. The Aycliff article appears to have been deleted on the grounds of non-notability. But it now appears that it could be of historical interest, if rewritten for that aspect (see my comment in the above link). Storye book (talk) 17:28, 7 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Storye book: I can't remember exactly what the resolution was on former settlements (usually called Deserted Medieval Villages) but feel that, individually, they weren't considered notable S a g a C i t y 17:47, 7 March 2021 (UTC)
- It's not a deserted medieval village. It's a council estate built around 1950. I had thought that it was totally demolished, leaving nothing behind, but it appears that it was partially demolished for the new dual carriageway in 1985, because Geograph has at least one picture of what's left of it taken one year ago. It also had the stationmaster's house, which became the King Lear pub, which in turn was demolished a few years ago and replaced by flats or similar (source for King Lear pub). But no worries. I just though you might be interested. Cheers. Storye book (talk) 18:08, 7 March 2021 (UTC)

Senior Wikipedians
[edit]WikiProject Wikipedians aged 70 and older has been inactive for some time. The following three proposals may help invigorate this project.
- Change the name of this project to WikiProject Senior Wikipedians.[a]
- Open membership in this project to users who are at least 60 years of age and have made at least 50 edits in the past year.[b]
- Open supporting membership in this project to users who are less than 60 years old but have made at least 50 edits in the past year and support the goals of this project.[c]
Suggested goals for this project:
- To support collaboration and communication among members for the advancement and improvement of Wikipedia and the Wikimedia movement.
- To encourage older people, retired people, and soon-to-be-retired people to participate in Wikipedia both for the advancement of the encyclopedia and for their own personal enjoyment.
- To encourage older people to share their experience and expertise for the improvement of Wikipedia.
- To encourage older users to use their experience and expertise to help younger and less experienced users.
- To encourage participation in local and regional Wikimedia events.
- To sponsor Wikipedia meetings and classes at places where older people gather.
- To advocate for the elimination of ageism and sexism in Wikipedia and the Wikimedia movement.
Notes
- ^ The current name of this project, WikiProject Wikipedians aged 70 and older, is somewhat cumbersome and excludes participation by any users under the age of 70 years.
- ^ This current minimum age limit of this project is 70 years. A minimum age limit of 60 years should permit the participation of most retired users. The minimum activity level of 50 edits per year is arbitrary. A minimum activity level indicates continued interest. Members who do not meet the minimum activity level shall be moved to inactive status. Members who have died shall be moved to memorial status.
- ^ A new class of Supporting Members allows those users under 60 years to support the goals of the project. Users approaching the age of 60 years may wish to become supporting members in anticipation of reaching the minimum age limit for members.
Please add your suggestions for this project at Senior Wikipedians. Thank you, Buaidh talk e-mail 01:15, 10 July 2024 (UTC)
If you don't wish to receive any further information about Senior Wikipedians, please remove your username from our notice list. Thanks.

Elder Wikipedians
[edit]My proposal to make extensive changes to WikiProject Wikipedians aged 70 and older was a bust, primarily because many users felt that the term "Senior Wikipedian" implied a higher ranking Wikipedia membership. Therefore, I am making two less ambitious proposals:
- Proposal #1. Change the name of "WikiProject Wikipedians aged 70 and older" to "WikiProject Elder Wikipedians".
- Proposal #2. Drop the minimum age requirement to 60 years.
Please respond to Elder Wikipedians and let us know what you think of each of these proposals.
Thank you, Buaidh talk e-mail
