February music

[edit]
story · music · places

On the main page today, 300 years after its first performance, Bach's cantata BWV 125, - a lovely very intimate piece, with peace and joy in the title. Enjoy listening with score - I discovered that only now! - Today is also the birthday of James Joyce, who has an article by many authors. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:33, 2 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

When I visited Dublin some decades ago, there were many old men in the pubs who reckoned themselves experts on Joyce, and were very proud of that. However, outside the pubs ran a marked Bloomsday trail, marking the voyage of the character Harold Bloom in the novel Ulysses. The old men knew the plot of Ulysses and knew all the points of interest along the trail. What they did not appear to know (at least the ones I met) was what the novel was really about, philosophically - although I'm pretty sure they got a lot of the humour in it. However, there is a saying: "If you think you understand the politics of Ireland, then you don't understand the politics of Ireland". That is to say, there are unknowables in Joyce's writings, and it would be arrogant to believe that any of us can understand all of it. Storye book (talk) 10:04, 4 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

İlhan Usmanbaş? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:59, 3 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Usmanbaş done. Storye book (talk) 10:04, 4 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, and he is marked ready for RD! (Needs an admin.) - Food pictured. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:39, 6 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
today: a German-born Spanish art collector, - the video in her honour is remarkable, as what she gave the world. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:56, 8 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Nice to see a hero. Thank you for that. Storye book (talk) 19:40, 8 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! - Paul Plishka? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:52, 8 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Plishka done. But what a list of tragedies. Poor man. Storye book (talk) 10:39, 9 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, and yes. - I find today's birthday child particularly inspiring, by enthusiasm and determination. That was - believe it or not - a pictured DYK in 2021, without the last line though. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:18, 9 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Plishka in interview --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:35, 9 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the YouTube link. Sadly the broadband here is too slow for watching videos etc. This is an ongoing problem with the local supply system to my village. Oh well. So far I can still work here, with text and stills. Storye book (talk) 08:48, 10 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sad that you miss much, but a small village has other advantages, - I live in one, but with a good connection. At my cousin's place, last weekend, I experienced the slow kind, - wanted to show her some of my pics, but we waited for only a few. - Heinz Winbeck? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:37, 11 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The broadband is even slower today. It has taken me half an hour to put a wikiproject on the talkpage of Winbeck's picture file, and to add an alt to his pic on his article. Tomorrow the engineer will arrive to repair the wires outside my house. I hope. Storye book (talk) 09:33, 12 February 2025 (UTC).[reply]
That's much worse than my cousin's village! - Do you agree that the lead image of Edith Mathis would be better if cropped further? (... nothing distracting left, less skirt) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:55, 13 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Mathis done. Storye book (talk) 10:52, 13 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, and just head is great for my sad list and the article, but for my story I'd prefer a version with no dark something left and less uninformative skirt, for the posture (if that's not too hard for your slow line). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:09, 13 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Do you mean like this? (My broadband was repaired this morning. Fingers crossed ...). Storye book (talk) 11:19, 13 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
yess! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:46, 13 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Phew! Storye book (talk) 11:50, 13 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Look at places for Valentine's food and flowers ;) - with a story, and more music there --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:13, 14 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. Glad the picture edit was useful for the Mathis story. Storye book (talk) 12:14, 14 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Cecil Leeson and Paul Creston.jpg: I'd like a pic for the article of Cecil Leeson, the left person, preferably around 1940, when the OTD plays - which might be free. Otherwise, could we give him a non-free image although this other one exists? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:50, 15 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Leeson done. Storye book (talk) 12:39, 15 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Great, so much better than with background. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:06, 15 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Friedrich Smend? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:24, 20 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
... and actually more urgent: Vladimír Válek? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:50, 20 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Válek done. Will do the other one later. Storye book (talk) 12:20, 20 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
thank you! - I point at a composer today, as the main page does. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:24, 20 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I cannot find a picture of Smend. Do you have a link? Storye book (talk) 08:26, 21 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
No, sorry. Like Dürr before. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:29, 21 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
OK. Maybe a picture will turn up one day. Storye book (talk) 11:51, 21 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
today's is about an opera singer on her 35th birthday, - if you see videos after the repair don't miss the short video which shows her in movement, - they had a Japanese movement coach for the production that impressed me in 2022. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:56, 21 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Birgit Nordin? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:27, 22 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Storye book (talk) 13:17, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Great! - Ricardo Kanji? ... has a pic on the Portuguese wiki. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:01, 26 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Kanji done. Thank you for the link - it's a good one. Storye book (talk) 10:45, 26 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. The next one is Ferenc Rados, - I'll look tomorrow. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:35, 26 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Rados done. There are some nice pictures of him as an old man out there, but this picture is rather striking, I think? Storye book (talk) 09:06, 27 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Someone removed it saying it shows Thomas Mann (who is mentioned in the text), not the pianist. Argue or find another? (forgot to sign)
File:Der Schriftsteller Thomas Mann im Jahr 1926.jpg - better don't argue ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:45, 4 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Wouldn't it be better to just upload the new pic under a different name? Less misleading? I wdon't want to edit war ... --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:46, 4 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I think the issue is probably that on the article page we can see the new picture here in England, and the alt confirms that it's the old bald man with spectacles. But maybe you can't see it yet where you are? Last time I looked at the file, the admins had not yet deleted the incorrect picture (of the man with the moustache), but they will do that soon. Don't worry, all will be well. Storye book (talk) 10:04, 4 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Update: Admins have now deleted the erroneous pic of Thomas Mann from the image filepage, so I hope that in your country you should now be able to see the pic of Rados on the article? Storye book (talk) 18:22, 4 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. When you explained before, I refreshed the page, to no avail, but then opened a new window and saw the new pic immediately. Will be my story tomorrow. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:12, 4 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! - File:Leonie Rysanek, H Anger 1962.jpg was deleted, she should have another one. I don't remember what it looked like. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:38, 28 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Rysanek done. There are some marvellous stage-costume photos of her out there, but this one shows her face best, I think? Storye book (talk) 09:41, 28 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I was blessed with her as Marschallin, in Vienna - Simon Lindley? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:00, 28 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Simon Lindley done. I remember him well, because I sang sop in his St Peter's Singers, in the 80s. He was certainly a fine organist, but he had a difficult side to his personality. On the other hand, I remember him crying after helping some children to choose hymns for the funeral of their father, a policeman who had been killed outside Leeds Parish Church (now Leeds Minster).. March music

[edit]
story · music · places

New month: today is the birthday of Chopin and Ricardo Kanji, see my stories of today and yesterday, with dream music by the first and Bach played by the other. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:16, 1 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Today: Carmen turns 150, as the main page and my story tell you. I chose a 1962 concert of the Habanera, - enjoy! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:37, 3 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the Callas link. It's always lovely to hear her voice again. Storye book (talk) 08:47, 4 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. The first video Google offered was of the 2010 production that the Met had repeated last Saturday, but it lives by the action, not the voice so much. I admire also how Callas "lived" the overture ;) - clever filming. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:12, 4 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Although, when you think about it, she has to do something to keep the attention on her during the overture. Me, I'd put my hands in my pockets, stare at the ceiling, jump up and down a bit, play with my phone... but she has a better idea. ;-D Storye book (talk) 09:23, 4 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Edesio Alejandro? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:56, 6 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Done. I would not normally choose a sunglasses/shades picture, but it is a lovely picture, and it seems to have been a well-known characteristic of this performer? Storye book (talk) 07:48, 7 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent choice! - On Ravel's birthday, we also think of a conductor and five more composers ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:01, 7 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Jean-Louis Pichon? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:29, 10 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Pichon done. Storye book (talk) 09:09, 11 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Great pic, thank you, - looks so inviting to a thoughtful conversation --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:16, 11 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
He's still on the main page, - today also Rossini's latest "sin" --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:28, 14 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Manfred Schukowski pic? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:39, 18 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Schukowski done. Storye book (talk) 17:25, 18 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, on the main page! - Also today: an opera, 100 years old OTD, on Bach's birthday. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:28, 21 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Today, 300 years of Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern, BWV 1! We sang works for (mostly) double choir by Pachelbel, Johann Christoph Bach, Kuhnau/Bach, Gounod and Rheinberger! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:13, 25 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Lovely. Lucky you! Storye book (talk) 12:17, 25 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
yes, happy - Alan Cuckston pic? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:29, 25 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Jörg Streli pic? ...on the main page now, - I forgot. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:28, 26 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Streli done - I like that smiling picture. Storye book (talk) 09:26, 26 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I like it very much! I met him a few times, but never took a portrait photo. In the video (in my story) you can hear his voice, lecture in the middle, q&a at the end. We don't see much, sadly. I remember how disappointed I was when DYK had a cropped image which didn't show what he was interested in: the building in nature. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:38, 26 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it is sad when that happens. I have never understood how architects can tolerate it when councils knock their buildings down, to re-use valuable land for the sake of greed, or owners despoil beautiful listed buildings because they don't care, and because they can usually get away with it. Storye book (talk) 09:50, 26 March 2025 (UTC).[reply]
"architects tolerate" - what could they do? - Janis Martin (soprano) pic? - came across her on memory lane. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:59, 26 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. What could they do. The same question was asked in the US before the Civil Rights Movement. In the UK a lot of buildings (but not enough buildings) are officially protected by the listed buildings laws, but those protections are very weak. I'll look at Janis Martin now. Storye book (talk) 09:36, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Martin done. There are some very formal studio photos of her out there, but they are dull by comparison with this one. This one is not really an ID picture, I suppose, but to me it identifies her perfectly. So I hope it's OK. Storye book (talk) 10:04, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, please could you kindly check that it's the right person? The face looks a bit like Janis Martin the rockabilly singer, who was the same age. So now I'm not sure. Storye book (talk) 10:09, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It's a great pic but I'm also not sure. Perhaps better a "safe" one. She sat across my table after a performance as Isolde, about that time (long ago that is), but looked less girlish if I remember that right. - What I came to say is that the Naxos ref for Cuckston comes with a pic. (It also told me that I was right to rephrase every single sentence in the article because it was all copied.) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:19, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It's OK. Here is another picture of her from the (authoritative) New York Times: here and same NYT picture here. It's a very similar picture from the same decade. Storye book (talk) 10:38, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I like it, and it looks more like opera ;) - and you were right that I couldn't see the NYT. - Struggling with N. again, for Mirella Freni. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:45, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
