A hand

Hi, I've found something very strange and started a discussion at Talk:Mediterranean cuisine. A neutral hand (or indeed several such) would be very welcome. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 15:11, 28 April 2016 (UTC)

@Chiswick Chap: Hey there: I actually just saw the notice you posted at WT:Food. Thanks for the notice. North America1000 15:13, 28 April 2016 (UTC)
Oh good! I hope this can be dealt with even-handedly by a suitable mix of sensible editors, but given how long the article has been stuck, perhaps it's time for the matter to be resolved peacefully. Is there anywhere else I can usefully post? Chiswick Chap (talk) 15:27, 28 April 2016 (UTC)
@Chiswick Chap: Just so you know, I can't guarantee that I will become involved in the article in a major way. Regarding where else to post, perhaps Wikiproject Europe. North America1000 16:32, 28 April 2016 (UTC)
I quite understand, and I wasn't expecting it. Most likely, just a moderating hand in the discussion would suffice, and of course, with any luck there will be some other editors about. Chiswick Chap (talk) 18:13, 28 April 2016 (UTC)

Would you be so kind and close the AfD relating to the Gary Cziko article please? Thanks.Picomtn (talk) 21:28, 13 May 2016 (UTC)

Prep 3

Hi, your nomination for Chahan (food) was placed in Prep 3 without an image. Would you like me to add to the hook to make it less obscure:

@Yoninah: Hey, that works, but be sure to add a comma after the word "dish", rather than the period that is in place... Queue 3 already has an image for a different article at this point, so it appears to be no go for using an image for the dish. North America1000 00:13, 16 May 2016 (UTC)

Templating

Don't start templating me when you are messing up Miss Spain by only halfway merging it as you claimed. Finished it or shut up. Your protection mode of all kinds of irrelevant info is well know. The Banner talk 21:25, 4 May 2016 (UTC)

I am under no obligation to edit per your direction, and I have made no claims of "halfway merging". Please stop blanking and redirecting the page at Miss Spain 2004. The deletion discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Miss Spain 2004 closed as merge. As the creator of the deletion discussion, it comes across that you are attempting to circumvent the consensus at the discussion to get your way. If you disagree with how the deletion discussion was closed, Wikipedia:Deletion review is that way →. North America1000 21:28, 4 May 2016 (UTC)
I agree with the result, I do not agree with the halfway mess and confusion you created. You can blame me, fine, but it is you who created the mess. The Banner talk 21:39, 4 May 2016 (UTC)
No "mess" or "confusion" was created whatsoever. North America1000 21:41, 4 May 2016 (UTC)
All relevant info is already in Miss Spain. So what do you want more? The Banner talk 22:05, 4 May 2016 (UTC)
Perhaps you should ask other participants at the deletion discussion to perform the merge. However, I wouldn't order or demand for them to do so as you did here, which is unlikely to gain much of a response. North America1000 22:16, 4 May 2016 (UTC)
You really give me the idea that you are following me around in order to protect as much pageant-related articles as possible. The Banner talk 10:24, 5 May 2016 (UTC)
I noticed a content removal you performed while patrolling Recent changes. You didn't use an edit summary, so I reverted the unexplained change. See below for more information. After this, I noticed some BLP prods you performed, but I was able to find sources about the subjects, so I added sources. I get the impression that you would prefer for all pageant-related information on Wikipedia to be removed, regardless of notability. All you do is remove content, but sometimes you don't even bother explaining why using an edit summary. I feel that some of your removals are excessive, and often damage articles, and when you remove referenced content as I've occasionally seen you do, it comes across that you may be trying to reduce the demonstrated notability in articles, perhaps as a means to justify their deletion. Also, your content removals are often ambiguously-explained and open ended in edit summaries, such as "fancruft", etc., and are often based upon your own subjective criteria rather than Wikipedia guidelines and policies. Also, ordering others to perform merges and telling them to "shut up" as you have done above demonstrates a hostile, uncivil attitude toward other editors. This ongoing stance regarding pageant articles suggests that you're oftentimes WP:NOTHERE to build an encyclopedia. North America1000 10:27, 5 May 2016 (UTC)

When editing Wikipedia, there is a field labeled "Edit summary" below the main edit box. It looks like this:

Edit summary (Briefly describe your changes)

Please be sure to provide a summary of every edit you make, even if you write only the briefest of summaries. The summaries are very helpful to people browsing an article's history.

Edit summary content is visible in:

Please use the edit summary to explain your reasoning for the edit, or a summary of what the edit changes. Thanks! North America1000 10:27, 5 May 2016 (UTC)

Hi Northamerica1000,
I was looking at this article and was going to add that its name in Japanese was chāhan (チャーハン). <stuff I know about, but can't find references for> It's written in katakana because it's considered a "loan-word" from Chinese. It's a Japanese version of Chinese cuisine. And it's considered something dad can make to give mom a break from cooking.</WP:NOR> I also notice that the articles linked to ja:チャーハン via Wikidata are just the various languages' variations of "fried rice". I have no knowledge at all how to wrangle Wikidata sub-categories (if such things exist) but I'll give it a shot over there, time permitting - I'm very busy at work weekdays. I'm reminded of - honk, honk, here comes the WP:NOR bus! - when I lived in Japan and was asked what "yakiniku" was in in English, and I said "Korean barbecue".

University of the Philippines Los Baños Institute of Biological Sciences

Hi. Here's a question for you. I'm trying to help out on the merging backlog out of AfD. You participated in this AfD discussion over a year ago. Here's my question, the result of the discussion was to merge to the main article, University of the Philippines Los Baños, but it wasn't discussed about adding it to the University of the Philippines Los Baños College of Arts and Sciences, which is the branch of the university this institute belongs to. In the spirit of being WP:BOLD, can I merge it to the latter article, where I think it is more appropriate?Onel5969 TT me 18:31, 10 May 2016 (UTC)

@Onel5969: Go for it. See the discussion at Talk:University of the Philippines Los Baños Institute of Biological Sciences § Getting ready to merge, but... started by Anne Delong, where consensus exists to merge the article to University of the Philippines Los Baños College of Arts and Sciences. North America1000 21:54, 10 May 2016 (UTC)
onel5969 and North America, it seems I went on with other tasks and never came back to do the merge. Please by all means do it, with the appropriate attribution in the edit summary.—Anne Delong (talk) 01:38, 11 May 2016 (UTC)
Hi Anne Delong (I don't think we've ever "spoken" before), and thanks NA. Was working on resurrecting an article from G13 tonight, but will do that merge tomorrow. Onel5969 TT me 03:01, 11 May 2016 (UTC)
Okay, I did it, but I screwed up the attribution in the edit summary, and since I'm not an admin I can't fix that. Sorry to bug you, but could you correct it for me? Thanks. Onel5969 TT me 03:21, 11 May 2016 (UTC)

Northamerica1000: I created the page for George Groslier. I appreciate your contributions to my new article. I am working with a partner who is trying to give me all the information he has about this subject, including references. What you have done so far is good, as far as I can see. But if you wish to contribute more content to this article, could we coordinate our efforts? I think it would be much more pleasant that way. Dylanexpert (talk) 02:11, 13 May 2016 (UTC)

@Dylanexpert: I may not work on the article more; interesting subject though. If I do add more to it, it would likely be easier for me to just add a few "side edits" here and there, as I did when adding references. Hey, are you really a Dylan expert, as in Bob Dylan? North America1000 03:44, 13 May 2016 (UTC)
A few "side edits" are fine. And yes, to answer your question, I do consider myself an expert on Bob Dylan... to the extent that anyone really can be.

Deletion of Primal Sympathy

Dear Northamerica1000,

It appears that you recently deleted the page regarding Wordsworth's Primal Sympathy.

That page had existed for several years and was visited in large numbers according to Google data and was the highest-clicked result for "primal sympathy" on Google's search engine.

Then it got taken down. I appealed that decision. The page was restored and an administrator said in restoring it that it never should have been deleted in the first place according to the Wikipedia criteria.

It was up for about a week again and then it seems you got involved and took it down? It's hard to understand why this page is being targeted for deletion. It is a scholarly topic and this page has assisted students in studying Wordsworth for years.

I would kindly ask that you restore it and that it not be deleted again. The deletion was already successfully appealed.

Kind regards, James — Preceding unsigned comment added by 210.148.47.161 (talk) 03:13, 23 May 2016 (UTC)

Dear Northamerica1000, — Preceding unsigned comment added by 210.148.47.161 (talk) 08:03, 23 May 2016 (UTC)

Could you please restore the page to allow sources to be added. It seems the complaints all stem from uncited sources. Adding sources should meet all criteria, correct? I can add the sources within one week if the page is restored. It is a subject of scholarly attention. Check the logs -- while in existence it was accessed by 1000s of hungry minds looking for guidance on the interpretations of this subject. Wikipedia is better off having a page dedicated to this topic than not having it.

Cheers, James — Preceding unsigned comment added by 210.148.47.161 (talk) 05:26, 23 May 2016 (UTC)

Here's what I can do, because I cannot simply buck consensus at the deletion discussion in this matter. You can list the sources you have compiled here, and then we can review them together. I could find myself in trouble if I were to restore the article under the terms you have stated just above. North America1000 05:44, 23 May 2016 (UTC)

Dear Northamerica1000,

Thanks certainly seems fair and reasonable. To assist me, can you copy the text of the page here? It's a bit hard to add the cites without having access to the page. But I'll do my best. Thx!

I can email you a copy of the deleted article. However, I seriously don't condone it being republished on Wikipedia without first being reviewed, such as at Articles for creation (AfC). FYI, an easy way to post a submission to AfC is to place {{Userspace draft}} atop a draft page and then select the "Submit your draft for review" link. North America1000 15:39, 23 May 2016 (UTC)

OK, how would I send you my e-mail address? Thx. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 210.148.47.161 (talk) 17:50, 23 May 2016 (UTC)

Please note that the "keep" !votes (except those from the article creator) were based on the incorrect impression that a supreme court justice had been assassinated, not the head of the secretariat of the court. --Randykitty (talk) 17:22, 23 May 2016 (UTC)

@Randykitty: I noticed that in your comment at the discussion. The !vote by BabbaQ also states, "notable, per sources ...", one keep !vote provided almost no rationale ("Strong Keep Error fixed"), E.M.Gregory provided a guideline-based rationale for retention ("The coverage of this attack was certainly international ...), and the !vote by SwisterTwister was essentially to draftify, and basing deletion in part upon a non-guideline-based notion that "there's also no actual article for him" (Wikipedia has plenty of articles about events when the subjects themselves may not be notable). As such, ultimately there was no consensus for a particular action within the discussion, and it had been relisted twice.
Also, I'm not seeing any input from the article's creator, Interestedfinefellow in the discussion. North America1000 17:37, 23 May 2016 (UTC)
  • Fair enough. And I mixed up the article creator with "Strong Keep Error fixed"... I guess that in a few years, somebody else will take it to AfD again... --Randykitty (talk) 18:58, 23 May 2016 (UTC)

DYK for Crema (dairy product)

On 28 May 2016, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Crema (dairy product), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that in Mexico, crema is sold directly to consumers by ranches that produce it? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Crema (dairy product). You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Crema (dairy product)), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

The ghost of Annabel: Dude Rancher Lodge. Montanabw(talk) 05:06, 30 May 2016 (UTC)

@Montanabw: Nice work on the new article, looks nice, and it's quite informative. North America1000 06:24, 30 May 2016 (UTC)
And always a lot of fun to do these unique, quirky places. Montanabw(talk) 19:37, 30 May 2016 (UTC)
Dude Rancher Lodge
@Montanabw: Dude Rancher Lodge is GA material with relatively minor improvements; it's not a no-tell motel... Ha! Being listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places is a nice bonus. North America1000 20:00, 2 June 2016 (UTC)
Well, I'm in the wikicup so a GAN next round would be something that gets my attention. If you want to post comments on the talk page or make some edits, I'd welcome any collaboration or feedback. I had a blast working with other people on the cow tipping GAN, and this one has a similar quirky feel. FYI, you can buy and stream the entire episode of "Hotel Impossible" on Amazon for $1.99, which I did. Not sure I needed anything there that wasn't in the "teaser" clips that are free and cited in the article, but if interested. Montanabw(talk) 23:52, 2 June 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the additional input. North America1000 17:48, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
