I own and use a private computer, but it is readily accessible to several friends. I have an account, but nonconstructive edits (like the one that inspired the above message) still happen. Unfortunately, creating an account for every user that edits Wikipedia through my computer is out of the question, and most cannot afford the time for account maintenance. Is there any way I can continue access to Wikipedia while managing other users' edits? I would very much like to avoid being blocked again. Surfing Interference

The article needs sources. The links section attracts spam and all the links there are of low quality. I would prefer some high quality sources. Books and magazines are good for that. That's why I removed them. Dawnseeker2000 14:47, 29 August 2010 (UTC)

The "external links" section and the "references" section are completely different. If there's spam, remove the spam, not the section, and consider using {{No more links}} to let editors know. There was one link, and it was a link to the ODP. Additionally, the policy you cited does not even mention external links.  ℳono  18:28, 29 August 2010 (UTC)
Directories, as in directories of links. You can see the relationship there right? I added the Open Directory Project link, but the other editor removed it saying " dmoz is primarily a list of breeders and lumped in with labradoodles to boot". I frequently replace large, and egregious lists (directories) of links with the {{dmoz}} template. It's a great solution.
That article really doesn't need external links. Articles are not required to have them, so your argument of not removing the section isn't valid, unless you can point to a specific policy, that is. On top of that, those particular links probably wouldn't fly with a good article review. I went ahead and removed the link to dmoz because there isn't anything specific to goldendoodles there anyhow. WP:NOTDIR sounds like a lot of things it isn't, and tends to be over-applied. Anyway, I know you added the dmoz link, however, then you removed it, which I didn't agree with. Essentially, it's more of a non-issue; I just thought it might be useful to have the link. It's likely that people who visit the article may be interested in getting a goldendoodle, and a directory listing breeders might be useful, however, not in the article (Wikipedia is not a vehicle for advertising)... Finally, your improvements look nice.  ℳono  21:26, 29 August 2010 (UTC)

Stereoscopy

Hi Dawnseeker2000,

Thanks for reviewing the article about Stereoscopy. Just curious why you removed an external link on Phereo.com? I completely agree that an article shouldn't have extensive number of external links, however this external link appears to be much more complex and relevant than others.

Take a closer look - most of approved links are sets of stereo photos - sometimes they are placed to sharing sites like Flickr that have no stereoscopic support. My external link leads to a stereo photo sharing resource with a good number of stereo content that can be observed utilizing any stereoscopic tool described in the article. I myself use Phereo for posting stereo photos from my Fuji stereo camera.

I'm sure that this link is relevant. If you want to shrink links - just remove those which lead to strange galleries of stereo photos placed to websites that don't allow stereo vision.

Hi Dawnseeker2000,

I worked hard updating "Stockton, CA" in order to include the "outdoor activities" category. I also erased two mean nicknames included in the description, and demoted violence to later categories so as not to unfairly paint a one-sided negative portrait of this vital, historic, and growing city. I have trouble understanding why one would not want to create a more knowledgable and balanced portrait of a city in an encyclopedia description and include my admissions.

Mercy Corps

I was recently sent a message by yourself telling me that my edit to the Mercy Corps page constituted vandalism. In this particular instance I had added Edinburgh, Scotland to the locations of headquarters of the organisation. Hi, I read the article and I noticed the translation by Google distorts the original meaning. Where Geert said: "Er zijn mensen die zeggen dat ik de moslims haat. Ik haat de moslims niet. Het doet mij verdriet dat de islam hen van hun waardigheid heeft beroofd." Google translates it as: "Some people say that I hate Muslims. I hate the Muslims. It grieves me that Islam has deprived them of their dignity.". It should have been: "Some people say that I hate Muslims. I don't hate the Muslims. Hi, I have not been on site for quite a while. I just read you post from late August concerning the external link I added to the Poodle Hybrid content. Link was for Doodle Rescue Collective, Inc. - a 501 3(c) non-profit, all volunteer organization that rescues poodle hybrid's dumped in animal shelters in the US & Canada. Guns n' Roses revision

The reference you removed is fully reliable. Few people knows more about the band than I do and I have several references on Wikipedia for another website I did work on (gnrsource.com). That website is broken now and I can't put anything there.

A fight with AnomieBOT

Hi Dawnseeker,

The crime that attracted AnomieBOT to my edit of Near-Earth object was that I removed one of a pair of references named "BROWN02", the one that had the text defining the name for the second reference in the pair. AnomieBOT did not care if the reference I removed was appropriate of not, it just wanted to keep the name defined for the second use of the reference. I am just finding out how this works and did not realize what I had done at first. As you can see by the edit history I finally figured it out.

Go Daddy edits

The ip is adding a reference tag to the url, so that any visit to that website counts towards the users account. It's spam and an attempt to receive a higher click-thorough number to the ips account. Dave Dial (talk) 02:45, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

WikiProject Space reorganization

Hello WikiProject Space member! A discussion has been started regarding the future of WikiProject Space here; any comments you might have would be welcome! There are mainly two competing ideas:

  1. Centralize all the Space-related WikiProjects, such as Astronomy and Spaceflight, and merge them into WikiProject Space, or
  2. Separate the Astronomy and Spaceflight "sides" of WikiProject, and remove WikiProject Space.

If you can think of other options, that's great too. Your contribution to the discussion would be much appreciated. Thanks! :)

Dawnseeker, I removed the original report because it looks like a new user who's trying to add information to the article but overwriting it instead - we see this quite often. OK apologies for re-adding the report and I may have overdone it with the warnings on that user page, but I don't see much point in messing with folks that are clearly here to vandalize. There's two indications regarding their intentions: what they're actually doing (blanking) and their user name (which tells us in no uncertain terms what they'll be doing). So that's how I see it. List of web application firewalls

Thanks for clarifying the reason for your deleting the reference to Armorlogic. However, Armorlogic is notable in the world of Web Application Firewalls. Armorlogic's Profense is the leading WAF for virtual servers. In particular, VMWare users. Also, all the major competitors are listed there so it is completely unfair not to list it. Why shouldn't Wikipedia try to be more comprehensive in their list? Readers are assisted by this and it improves wikipedia as a source. Who is the judge of notable. I am certain that Armorlogic sells more WAFs than Barracuda, although Barracuda may sell a greater variety of products. Please reinstate Armorlogic on the list of WAFs.

While we agree that the original Armorlogic article started off on the wrong foot as we did not know what we were doing and approached it on the understanding that people would give us a chance to satisfy the guidelines. We thought we had provided sufficient information including third party references - Secure Computing Magazine review of our product and many of the others already listed - but the editors had a full head of steam so it became too difficult to defend the page. More importantly for new comers, we shouldn't be judged against perfect. For example, there is nothing in the Barracuda or Fortinet pages to distinguish them from Armorlogic in terms of notability. Every business is interested in being on Wikipedia for the same reason - to raise the profile of the company (aka advertising). You have indicated the listing should be held to the same threshold as a company page. It seems to me that a list of WAF products, should simply list well known WAF products. Perhaps a threshold might be what shows up on a google search rather than something as arbitrary as the editor of wikipedia who may not have any domain expertise. If you search Google under Web Application Firewall Comparison or VMWare Waf ... you will see our product near the top of the list. It is valuable information to list the WAFs - valuable to the readers. By analogy, certain vehicles or even countries might not seem notable to some readers or editors, but they should still be included in a list of vehicles and countries, shouldn't they? Again, please reinstate Armorlogic in the list of WAFs.

Hi Dawnseeker2000. On Madison High School (Portland, Oregon), there's a good reason to preserve dead links used as references. Yes, it's only being used to duplicate what is found in the KGW article, but it's good for WP:V. I changed Heidi Klums name above her picture to her current name which she likes to be called Heidi Samuel. It keeps getting reverted when in all actuality her real name now is Heidi Samuel. Plagiarism

ACA disambiguation

hi, Dawnseeker ... a few days ago you removed my addition of the Australasian Corrosion Association to the ACA disambiguation page, citing no "red link necessary". wondering why you had not simply removed the red link, i added the entry back without creating a red link. i notice you have again removed it and am wondering why. since the page does have a section for Professional Associations, and since the Australasian Corrosion Association (corrosion.com.au) is clearly one, i cannot understand why it wouldn't belong in that category. i have currently left the page as it is and am open to discussion, please. Euphonium Edits

Bravo for having the courage to clean-up that contentious and obese section on notable artists. Your criteria for continued mention there of a groundbreaking artist's notability being demonstrated by their own article is a solid basis. (Though you missed Simone Mantia who is responsible for preventing the disappearance of the instrument in the US - but who amazingly was missing from the old list).

That section and College Climate above it are constantly in flux. I had called for this edit on the discussion page for the article and when you had the guts to push the list of euphonium players back to List of euphonium players, I went ahead and detached the list of schools and teachers as well to Euphonium Instructors. DOING A PROJECT

I wasn't finished updating the reference. I'm doing this for a project and now that you've fixed my reference when I wasn't done I can no longer show accurately that it was me that referenced this material for my project. I would appreciate it if you would no longer correct anything that has my name attached to it. As I am frustrated now and will most likely have to look up and choose another inline citation. If you mean that you don't see a rebuttal from my IP address, I have a dynamic IP address which changes beyond my control. The IP I edit from today may not be the IP I edit from tomorrow. I must disagree that repeatedly restoring a contentious item that is currently under discussion (and that has been quite reasonably challenged) is not vandalism. Although I respect your right to express support for the item, I think you also need to watch your tone in criticizing someone who is simply defending several Wikipedia policies, notably WP:CON, WP:V, WP:NOR, and WP:BURDEN.
