Draft page: MEnvesti
Hello DannyS712, thank you for your feedback on the wiki draft page for MEnvesti. I have done more in-depth research about the company to reflect the standards for encyclopedia entries as you suggested. The new draft has been re-submitted and awaiting re-review. Category:WikiProject Women music deletion discussion
I noticed you closed the above CfD deletion discussion, at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2020 January 18 as "delete" as a non-admin before the category had been deleted. Are we allowed to do that in obvious cases where the speedy deletion will be accepted (i.e., empty category being one)? Just so I know for future.
Thanks,
--Doug Mehus T·C 01:04, 26 January 2020 (UTC)
- @Dmehus: Cfd is a bit different from other non-admin closures. See Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Administrator instructions for more. A few sysops have been kind enough to copy my closes over for the bot to process, see WT:CFDW. Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 01:20, 26 January 2020 (UTC)

Problems
- Some mobile diffs have problems. A couple of buttons are not shown. Structured data diffs on Commons are confusing. The developers are working on fixing it. [1][2]
- Administrators on wikis that use Structured Discussions can't move discussion pages. This is a bug. The developers are working on fixing it. [3]
Changes later this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
Future changes
- There is JavaScript code on Special:Undelete for administrators that makes it possible to automatically select multiple checkboxes by holding the "Shift" key and clicking. This code is also loaded by accident on other special pages and on articles. This makes pages slower to load. This will be fixed. If you know of other special pages where this is useful please tell the developers at phab:T232688.

First ref can be used for non-controversial info but isn't independent. It meets an SNG, but it is good preactice to also show meeting the GNG. To meet the GNG, it would 1 additional source.

Requesting you to be my mentor
Dear DannyS712, I was asked by Mgasparin to be as my mentor, I requested for AfC and was denied for not meeting minimum edit requirements, I would like to learn more about the things for AfC or AfD, I have been active on fighting vandalism until November of last month, resumed this year in January and started my fighting in vandalism, after few edits I saw an article which I felt should have not been approved for article of creation so I decided to apply for AfC and awaited for review, after a week I saw that my request was denied and check a message left by Mgasparin to my thread created when I requested for AfC, Mgasparin recommended you as one of the 3 mentors and starting from today I am going to resume my editing here on Wikipedia until Summer. Looking forward to hearing from you. Angus1986 (talk) 01:16, 1 February 2020 (UTC)

- Following a request for comment, partial blocks are now enabled on the English Wikipedia. This functionality allows administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces rather than the entire site. A draft policy is being workshopped at Wikipedia:Partial blocks.
- The request for comment seeking the community's sentiment for a binding desysop procedure closed with
wide-spread support for an alternative desysoping procedure based on community input
. No proposed process received consensus.
- Twinkle now supports partial blocking. There is a small checkbox that toggles the "partial" status for both blocks and templating. There is currently one template: {{uw-pblock}}.
- When trying to move a page, if the target title already exists then a warning message is shown. The warning message will now include a link to the target title. [4]
- Following a recent arbitration case, the Arbitration Committee reminded administrators
that checkuser and oversight blocks must not be reversed or modified without prior consultation with the checkuser or oversighter who placed the block, the respective functionary team, or the Arbitration Committee.
- Following a recent arbitration case, the Arbitration Committee reminded administrators
- Voting in the 2020 Steward elections will begin on 08 February 2020, 14:00 (UTC) and end on 28 February 2020, 13:59 (UTC). The confirmation process of current stewards is being held in parallel. You can automatically check your eligibility to vote.

Suggesting a new feature
A much welcomed feature might be the possibility to sort files in Categories similar to the option to sort files in Windows directories, that is by name (now default and only option), by date, by file or image size, by type and what have you. The possibility to sort by date would be a tremendous improvement, since it shows in a click which files have been added, files that may inspire the expansion or the improvement of an article on Wikipedia. Sorting by file size would make it very easy to select the best resolution etc. etc. This feature seems to come in so handy, that I can hardly believe it doesn't already exist (or am I missing an existing tool?). Maybe if you have the time and the mood... Greetings, Eissink (talk) 14:52, 5 February 2020 (UTC).

Lint errors at German Wikisource
Dear DannyS712, first I want to thank you in general for your contributions to erase the Lint errors. Unfortunatly some automatic replacements are rather damaging to our project. As an example: please do not replace <tt> tags, because special formatting guideline apply to our projects. These changes need to be undone. Best regards --Mapmarks (talk) 21:22, 6 February 2020 (UTC)
- @Mapmarks: My apologies - I looked but didn't find an explanation for using `tt`. Given that the tag is deprecated, is there any plan to replace its usage? DannyS712 (talk) 21:46, 6 February 2020 (UTC)
- Most of the German transcription projects use the <tt> tag for distinguishing Antiqua from Blackletter typefaces that appear in the transcribed sources. Many projects have their individual guidelines, for example s:de:Württembergische Oberamtsbeschreibungen/Editionsrichtlinien and s:de:ADB#Editionsrichtlinien. The tag is widely used for this purpose, I guess on 80% of all projects. At the moment ~214.900 errors are listed in the "obsolete-tag" section (tt and other tags).
- I can’t remember if it was officially communicated to dewikisource that the tags are deprecated and should be replaced? And there is no plan to replace them, as far as I know. At least there should be a discussion about it first on German Wikisource, :) --Mapmarks (talk) 02:29, 7 February 2020 (UTC)
- @Mapmarks: The deprecation was not a mediawiki decision; it is not supported for HTML5. See https://www.w3schools.com/TAGS/tag_tt.asp DannyS712 (talk) 06:06, 7 February 2020 (UTC)

Short descriptions
Please be more careful with these. You've just tagged a bunch of politicians with shortdescriptions saying they were footballers because they played amateur football at some point. New Page Reviewer newsletter February 2020
Hello DannyS712,
- Source Guide Discussion
The first NPP source guide discussion is now underway. It covers a wide range of sources in Ghana with the goal of providing more guidance to reviewers about sources they might see when reviewing pages. Hopefully, new page reviewers will join others interested in reliable sources and those with expertise in these sources to make the discussion a success.
- Redirects
New to NPP? Looking to try something a little different? Consider patrolling some redirects. Redirects are relatively easy to review, can be found easily through the New Pages Feed. You can find more information about how to patrol redirects at WP:RPATROL.
- Discussions and Resources
- There is an ongoing discussion around changing notifications for new editors who attempt to write articles.
- A recent discussion of whether Michelin starred restraunts are notable was archived without closure.
- A resource page with links pertinent for reviewers was created this month.
- A proposal to increase the scope of G5 was withdrawn.
- Refresher
Geographic regions, areas and places generally do not need general notability guideline type sourcing. When evaluating whether an article meets this notability guideline please also consider whether it might actually be a form of WP:SPAM for a development project (e.g. PR for a large luxury residential development) and not actually covered by the guideline.

Testing the Page Curation Tool with Wiktionary soft redirects
I see you are a New Page Patrol reviewer on English Wikipedia. Even though the guidelines at NPP don't, specifically, prohibit one reviewing pages they themselves created, the Wikipedia Page Curation Tool page says it's not available on pages one creates. Nevertheless, I would like to perform a test, and I need to find someone who is not autopatrolled. I did reach out to Utopes, and I see they are not autopatrolled, but I'm not sure where they are based. As I suspect you are North America based, would you mind browsing wikt:Category:English internet slang for a non-encyclopedic term we don't currently have a redirect or soft redirect for and create a Wiktionary soft redirect using {{Wiktionary redirect}}? That way, I can then test to see if the Page Curation Tool's toolbar shows up for Wikimedia sister project soft redirects.
Cheers,
Doug Mehus T·C 23:56, 18 February 2020 (UTC)
- @Dmehus: I can confirm that it does show up; also, I am autopatrolled (global rollbacker :( ) - it shows up for normal redirects as well DannyS712 (talk) 00:05, 19 February 2020 (UTC)
- DannyS712, Oh, I thought you said you weren't autopatrolled on English Wikipedia? Okay, that's fine then. As long as the tool shows up for Wiktonary redirects, that's great. Doug Mehus T·C 00:06, 19 February 2020 (UTC)
- I see that Danny has already responded to you, but you cannot patrol pages that you have created. If you are autopatrolled, you still aren't able to patrol your own pages, because they are already marked as patrolled. The page curation tool does appear for your soft-redirect. Utopes (talk / cont) 00:44, 19 February 2020 (UTC)
- Utopes, Thanks for clarifying. Doug Mehus T·C 02:19, 19 February 2020 (UTC)

MODCOMP IV rediredt?
The link for the MODCOMP IV computer on the PAVE PAWS Wikipedia page is pretty useless when it simply points back to that web page. In point of fact, the PAVE PAWS system was just one user of the MODCOMP IV system; the NASA ground support network had many of them, the oil industry was a major MODCOMP customer, and they saw use in computer-based instruction. So, on Jan. 24, 2020, I fixed the redirect of MODCOMP IV to refer to MODCOMP instead of PAVE PAWS#Development. There's a full paragraph on that web page that describes the characteristics of the MODCOMP IV, while the mention of the machine on the PAVE PAWS page is just that, a passing mention giving no detail, and there is no other use of MODCOMP IV on Wikipedia.
(I note that CYBER 174 is similarly mis-redirected and ought to redirect to CDC Cyber#Cyber 70 and 170 series where there is useful technical information about that series of computers.)
Why did you undo my redirect and point MODCOMP IV back to PAVE PAWS#Development? Douglas W. Jones (talk) 19:28, 25 February 2020 (UTC)
- @Douglas W. Jones: because the target you chose doesn't exist DannyS712 (talk) 19:30, 25 February 2020 (UTC)
- Ah! Stupid me — Modcomp ≠ MODCOMP — which is to say, case matters. Do you mind if I fix the link again, but this time, using the correct case? MODCOMP does exist. Douglas W. Jones (talk) 23:05, 25 February 2020 (UTC)

Your draft article, Draft:Milipaul
Hello, DannyS712. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Milipaul".
In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply and remove the {{db-afc}}
, {{db-draft}}
, or {{db-g13}}
code.
If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.
Thank you for your submission to Wikipedia! UnitedStatesian (talk) 13:57, 28 February 2020 (UTC)

Scripts++
You probably saw, but I started the template Wikipedia:Scripts++/New issue to hopefully streamline the process of writing the update and making the wikitext more friendly. I've gotta run, so it's woefully underdocumented and not yet finished, but feel free to keep tweaking and best of luck getting more hands to help out. I'll come back to that (and the most recent gerrit patch!) once I have time later this weekend. — Wug·a·po·des 01:38, 29 February 2020 (UTC)
- @Wugapodes: yes, please feel free to write it DannyS712 (talk) 01:58, 29 February 2020 (UTC)
- @Wugapodes: I took another look - I don't think extra templates are going to help. I'm planning to write a script to make publishing easier, and it'll also reset the draft page DannyS712 (talk) 15:54, 1 March 2020 (UTC)
Honestly that's probably the better course. It felt like it was getting awkwardly close to DYK levels of baroque templates. — Wug·a·po·des 21:57, 1 March 2020 (UTC)

WikiCup 2020 March newsletter
And so ends the first round of the competition. Everyone with a positive score moves on to Round 2, with 57 contestants qualifying. We have abolished the groups this year, so to qualify for Round 3 you will need to finish Round 2 among the top thirty-two contestants.
Our top scorers in Round 1 were:
- Epicgenius, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with a featured article, five good articles and an assortment of other submissions, specialising on buildings and locations in New York, for a total of 895 points.
- Gog the Mild came next with 464 points, from a featured article, two good articles and a number of reviews, the main theme being naval warfare.
- Raymie was in third place with 419 points, garnered from one good article and an impressive 34 DYKs on radio and TV stations in the United States.
- Harrias came next at 414, with a featured article and three good articles, an English civil war battle specialist.
- CaptainEek was in fifth place with 405 points, mostly garnered from bringing Cactus wren to featured article status.
- The top ten contestants at the end of Round 1 all scored over 200 points; they also included L293D, Kingsif, Enwebb, Lee Vilenski and CAPTAIN MEDUSA. Seven of the top ten contestants in Round 1 are new to the WikiCup.
These contestants, like all the others, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. In Round 1 there were four featured articles, one featured list and two featured pictures, as well as around two hundred DYKs and twenty-seven ITNs. Between them, contestants completed 127 good article reviews, nearly a hundred more than the 43 good articles they claimed for, thus making a substantial dent in the review backlog. Contestants also claimed for 40 featured article / featured list reviews, and most even remembered to mention their WikiCup participation in their reviews (a requirement).
Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.
If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Problems
- Readers who were not logged in briefly saw the interface in a language decided by their browser. It should normally be in the language of the wiki. This happened for a short period of time last week. This was because of a bug. [10]
Changes later this week
- If you forget your password you can ask for a new one to be sent to your email address. You need to know your email address or your username. You will now be able to choose that you need to enter both your email address and your username. This will be a preference. This is to get fewer password reset emails someone else asked for. [11]
- When you asked for a new password you could see if the username didn't exist on Special:PasswordReset. Now the page will show the username you entered and tell you an email has been sent if the username exists. This is for better security. [12]
- On Special:WhatLinksHere you can see what other pages link to a page. You can see if the link is from a redirect. You can now see which section the redirect links to. [13]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 3 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 4 March. It will be on all wikis from 5 March (calendar).
Future changes
- The developers are working on a new interface to solve edit conflicts on talk pages. You can give feedback. [14]
- There is a vote on the creation of a new user group called abuse filter manager. The vote runs from March 1 to March 31 on Meta.

This is the gadget concerned (here), it seems the two tools don't interact properly, a confirmation is shown yes, but the rollback is already performed by then, is it possible to detect if this script is also installed, in which case it will wait for confirmation from MA's script, or alternatively, and this should be easier, include an option similar to MA's tool as a preference. --qedk (t 桜 c) 09:22, 4 March 2020 (UTC)

Period?
Having just seen a couple more purely Australian articles with an Edit summary quite meaningless to Australians (and speakers of lots of other versions of English), I thought I'd draw your attention to Wikipedia:Reference desk/Language#Fixing period locations. HiLo48 (talk) 23:04, 14 March 2020 (UTC)

- Please stop messing with the periods (full stops). It is going to take a troop of cavalry to fix all the damage you have done. Thanks. BeenAroundAWhile (talk) 06:35, 15 March 2020 (UTC)
- @BeenAroundAWhile: what damage exactly do you think I have done? DannyS712 (talk) 06:35, 15 March 2020 (UTC)
- "In American usage, periods (full stops) and commas go inside the quote marks, not outside," he responded. "That's all." BeenAroundAWhile (talk) 06:46, 15 March 2020 (UTC)
- @BeenAroundAWhile: Sure, but I didn't change the status quo of them already being outside of the quotation marks, so I'm not sure why you think I have caused damage. For articles were this was an issue, I eliminated one of two issues with the period location (was after ref and quote, now just after quote), and for articles where it was not, I eliminated the only issue (was after ref, now not) DannyS712 (talk) 06:52, 15 March 2020 (UTC)

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- There is a new API module for changing the content model of existing pages. Use
action=changecontentmodel
to specify the new model. You can read the documentation on mediawiki.org. [20]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 17 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 18 March. It will be on all wikis from 19 March (calendar).
Future changes
- If you edit a page at the same time as someone else you can get an edit conflict. There is a new two-column interface to make it easier to solve this. It will soon be active by default on the German, Arabic, and Farsi Wikipedias. It will be on by default on more wikis within the next months. You will be able to opt out of the new interface. [21][22]
- You can see a proposed design for replying to comments in an easier way.

Potential bug in Stub bot.js
In the occasional cases where {{Ambox}}'s parameters aren't put in separate lines, it looks like the line in User:DannyS712_test/Stub_bot.js will result in undesired behaviour:
var new_page = page.replace(/(\|\s*name\s*=).*/i, "$1 {{subst:FULLPAGENAME}}");
Suggest changing it to:
var new_page = page.replace(/(\|\s*name\s*=)[^|}]*/i, "$1 {{subst:FULLPAGENAME}}");
so that nothing outside the parameter value is touched. Also, I don't think the i flag is needed in the regex since the parameter name name
is case-sensitive.

GOCE March newsletter
Guild of Copy Editors March 2020 Newsletter
Hello and welcome to the March newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since December 2019. All being well, we're planning to issue these quarterly in 2020, balancing the need to communicate widely with the avoidance of filling up talk pages. Don't forget you can unsubscribe at any time; see below. Election results: There was little changeover in the roster of Guild Coordinators, with Miniapolis stepping down with distinction as a coordinator emeritus while Jonesey95 returned as lead coordinator. The next election is scheduled for June 2020 and all Wikipedians in good standing may participate. January Drive: Thanks to everyone for the splendid work, completing 215 copy edits including 56 articles from the Requests page and 116 backlog articles from the target months of June to August 2019. At the conclusion of the drive there was a record low of 323 articles in the copy editing backlog. Of the 27 editors who signed up for the drive, 21 copyedited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. February Blitz: Of the 15 editors who signed up for this one-week blitz, 13 completed at least one copy edit. A total of 32 articles were copy edited, evenly split between the twin goals of requests and the oldest articles from the copy-editing backlog. Full results are here. March Drive: Currently underway, this event is targeting requests and backlog articles from September to November 2019. As of 18 March, the backlog stands at a record low of 253 articles and is expected to drop further as the drive progresses. Awards will be given to everyone who copyedits at least one article from the backlog. Help set a new record and sign up now! Progress report: As of 18 March, GOCE copyeditors have completed 161 requests in 2020 and there was a net reduction of 385 articles from the copy-editing backlog – a 60% decrease from the beginning of the year. Well done and thank you everyone! Election reminder: It may only be March but don't forget our mid-year Election of Coordinators opens for nominations on 1 June. Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here. Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Baffle gab1978, Reidgreg, Tdslk and Twofingered Typist To discontinue receiving GOCE newsletters, please remove your name from our mailing list.

Hello DannyS712. You reviewed Franchise Tax Board of California v. Hyatt for GA status; at that time I was inactive and your comments were thus not implemented in the article. As such, you failed the nomination. I appreciate the time you took to review the article and have since implemented your feedback. Now that that feedback has been implemented, do you feel it is GA-worthy? If so, I'll nominate it and you or any other GA reviewer can take a look at it. Problems
- Some development will be slower than planned. This is because of the current pandemic. You can see the new deployment guidelines. This is to avoid risks when some persons could be unavailable.
- There was a problem when adding interwiki links. The tool you use to add interwiki links could suggest the wrong project to link to. This has now been fixed. [23][24]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 24 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 25 March. It will be on all wikis from 26 March (calendar).
Future changes
- There is a project to make editing easier for newcomers. The developers are trying to understand what initiatives different Wikipedias have to welcome newcomers. They also want to know which templates are often used for maintenance activities. You can help this project by checking if your wiki's pages are listed on Wikidata.

Suggestion for new bot task
Hi Danny I regularly use your very useful bot list of orphaned articles with incoming links. It is great to be able to clear down the list of apparent orphans in this way. Recently I’ve had another thought - there are still a lot of articles that don’t have a talk page so are not brought to the attention of WikiProject editors. I think it would be very useful to have a bot identify a list of articles that don’t have a talk page so I could look at them and add relevant WikiProject templates. Would you have any interest in adding this task to your bot? No worries if not as I appreciate it does a huge number of things anyway. All the best Mccapra (talk) 12:52, 1 April 2020 (UTC)

Historic Hotels of America and duplication
Hi, after working quite a bit at developing new National Registry of the Historic Hotels of America, I finally come across List of Historic Hotels of America which you developed already. Hmm, need to merge, and yours was created first so gets some respect. Mine is organized by state, is nice in some ways, is incomplete in that i haven't gotten through the states. But yours is incomplete, because you only included hotels which have Wikipedia articles, right? I have been creating a bunch of new articles as i go through the states. E.g. Saint Paul Hotel, which must not be on yours. Not sure what best article title is.
Hmm, it woulda been nice if there had been a link from Historic Hotels of America to yours. --Doncram (talk) 22:10, 5 April 2020 (UTC)
- @Doncram: I only created that as a list following a CfD - if you want to merge it, go ahead; I'm not invested in it and have no preference regarding title DannyS712 (talk) 22:20, 5 April 2020 (UTC)
