Disambiguation of Novi Stars
All sorted :) --Really21 (talk) 15:25, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
Gerry Skilton
Hi,
your bot sent me a confusing message that I had added links to the above article which I had not done. I had simply restored the article which had, erraneously, been turned into a redirect page. I set that right but I did NOT add any links. Anyway, what's the point of your bot telling me that I added links? I'm not sure I need to receive that kind of information, and anyway, the way the words are minced in that message, I feel it sounds a bit patronizing at least to an experienced user. I think you may want to go over the messages you programmed your bot to send. --Krawunsel (talk) 11:35, 4 September 2012 (UTC)
- I try to get the bot to avoid messaging users who are reverting vandalism, etc. based on the edit summary. If you had used "restore" or "revert" you wouldn't have received a message. So please accept my apology and feel free to ignore and remove the message. Also, you can always opt out of any future messages. Regarding the message itself, I recently changed it per Sue Gardner's suggestion. How would you change it? I'm definitely willing to scale it back a bit. --JaGatalk 16:37, 5 September 2012 (UTC)
Thank you
Thank you for the message on the talk page of my userpage. I notice this is a bot so I wondered whether I should have sent my message to the operator of this bot! ACEOREVIVED (talk) 14:49, 5 September 2012 (UTC)
opt in
I'm not sure I think its reasonable that I need to place special code on my talkpage in order not to receive these messages. How about making it opt in?·ʍaunus·snunɐw· 13:33, 5 September 2012 (UTC)
- That would destroy the purpose of the bot - outreach and education. --JaGatalk 16:40, 5 September 2012 (UTC)
- I thought the purpose was to get rid of links to disambiguation pages. If the purpose is outreach and education I think the bot should be closed altogether. We don't need more bigbrothering.·ʍaunus·snunɐw· 13:41, 6 September 2012 (UTC)
- I find it unreasonable that someone should find it unreasonable to place a small piece of code on your talkpage not to receive the messages. Why wouldn't you want to receive the messages anyways? The DAB links that it notified you of were incorrectly linked to and should be modified. Ryan Vesey 14:17, 6 September 2012 (UTC)
- Then create a bot that can fix those instead of harassing content creators with automated outreach educational messages. Noone should receive unsolicited automated messages. If someone wants to comment on my work then I expect them to have the decency to do so personally. If someone wants to educate me or reach out to me even more so.·ʍaunus·snunɐw· 14:21, 6 September 2012 (UTC)
- There is no reason for you to be slighted by a bot informing you that you made an error. A bot cannot fix DAB links, it doesn't know where they should lead. Who is lacking decency here? Nobody is commenting on the quality of your work. A bot is informing you of an error, nothing more. The fact of the matter is, a reader doesn't want to end up on a dab page, they want the link to take them to the correct destination. This bot improves the encyclopedia. If you don't want to receive the messages, it is incredibly easy to add to your talk page. Ryan Vesey 14:27, 6 September 2012 (UTC)
- And soon my talkpage will be a collection of bot deny links. Of course dab fixing is good, but let the bot post its messages to those editors who enjoy doing gnome work. Make it an opt-in bot so that I can keep doing what I am best at and dablink fixers can do what they are best at.·ʍaunus·snunɐw· 14:38, 6 September 2012 (UTC)

dablinks with dn tags
Hi. I'm not sure if this is technically feasible, but if possible, could DPLbot refrain from warning about links to disambiguation pages that have been added together with a dn tag? Thanks. --Stfg (talk) 18:15, 8 September 2012 (UTC)
- I'm sure it could be done, but does that happen that often? I'm not sure it's worth the programming effort; it would not be a quick and easy thing. --JaGatalk 18:23, 9 September 2012 (UTC)
- I don't know how often it happens in general, but I don't think it's worth troubling you for it if it's a big job. I'm sure editors can put up with it in that case. Thanks for considering it. --Stfg (talk) 18:29, 9 September 2012 (UTC)
- Could you program it to ignore a contribution with an edit summary containing !nodpl!? SineBot does this. Ryan Vesey 18:33, 9 September 2012 (UTC)
- I could do that quite easily, if people want it. I already filter for edit summaries that indicate vandal fighting. --JaGatalk 01:44, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

the coolest bot ever!
whoever had the idea to do this: super great! I could fix them in a minute or so due to the tooltip coming up. I do 'sloppy' keywording: things that should be keywords which can be looked up I do just enclose in square brackets. If they come back red I remove the brackets, if not then I did in the past treat it as a valid lookup to assist the reader learning more, and not bother to actually follow them. Now, right, this time I did hit three disambiguation pages and the bot sent me a message (I first thought it came from someone else and thanked him for his input LOL). I used the fix it link in the talk message, the links were red, and clicking brought a great tool tip with selections, actually the ones that would fit were already lit up! Great software, great coding! Bots rock!
Mike (talk) 18:43, 9 September 2012 (UTC)
Possible expansion?
I know nothing about coding so the framework may or may not be already in place. Could the bot check for phrases encloded like [[this] or [this]]? (Things that were meant to be linked but weren't coded correctly and inform the contributor? Ryan Vesey 18:46, 9 September 2012 (UTC)
- I think Wikipedia:WikiProject Check Wikipedia has that covered already. I'm not sure if a bot fixes them or not - if there isn't a bot for this, there should be. --JaGatalk 01:47, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

Corrected Disambiguation

Jcheckler (talk) 17:08, 13 September 2012 (UTC)
It Worked
I had no idea this was around; I think it's a great idea cuz I wouldn't have known myself to check. I'm like anybody else, I stumbled into Wikipedia editing gradually, and I typically don't notice stuff unless it comes and hits me in the head.
I'm not even sure if the dis link was my fault; but I'm perfectly happy to fix it as it needed to be fixed.
Alternative idea: check this when someone edits a page: right when they're presented with the first page after clicking Edit. When I'm about to make changes anyway. Hmmm maybe I see why you did it this way. — Preceding unsigned comment added by OsamaBinLogin (talk • contribs) 21:46, 13 September 2012 (UTC)
- Hey, thanks for the note. I couldn't do that anyways - something like that would have to be integrated into the Wikimedia software and all my work is based on Toolserver, which is a separate site that holds (usually) real-time replicated Wikipedia databases. --JaGatalk 23:41, 13 September 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for your info on, "Black Hand" entry. It's now corrected; but, I'm not the one to make that mistake. It was an entry that was there before I'd started on the page, though I may have edited it since. I just didn't look to see if the link had been connected to the correct meaning. Suggestion for boilerplate inclusion
Hi,
I received your bot's boilerplate warning.
In fact, this was intentional in my case, but while I was investigating the dabs, I came across a reference to WP:INTDABLINK.
It might be useful to include a link to that in your boilerplate, as I found it quite informative and explained things that the current boilerplate doesn't really make clear.
All the best,

Strange syntax.
I'd rather the bot tell me "I noticed" than "We noticed" when it notices I mess up. It's more accurate and less creepy. Also, "though" should start the sentence, rather than interrupt it (especially without a comma). Not a big deal, just putting it out there.
It's OK to remove this message. InedibleHulk (talk) 04:24, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
Incorrect disambiguation notice
Hi Your bot posted a disambiguation notice to me which is incorrect:
We noticed though that when you edited Reijo Tossavainen, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Kymi (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles
The link concerned does NOT point to the disambiguation page but to a specific page.
The markup concerned (without spaces) is:
[ [ kymi,finland | kymi ] ]
Your bot appears to be reading only the content of the markup after the pipe.
If you wish, please reply via my Talk page. Thanks. LookingGlass (talk) 08:10, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
The Royal Bot
I agree with User:InedibleHulk above that your bot uses inappropriate and annoying language. Have you any idea how patronising your bot can sound to content editors when it tells them:
Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that...
How does your bot assess the worth of my edits? What is the basis of this accolade that Wikipedia appreciates my help? Was that decided at some extraordinary board meeting chaired by Jimmy Wales? Perhaps an emergency meeting called so an immediate assessment could by made in the name of Wikipedia concerning the value of my recent contributions? And who or what exactly is this Royal We that claims it has "noticed" something. I notice you didn't respond to InedibleHulk, so perhaps you think this is not strange language. Is that because the careful assessments I suggested would be needed are in fact carried out by appropriate monitoring committees before the bot makes its assertions? --Epipelagic (talk) 23:26, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
- I wouldn't read too far into the lack of response. I just don't think this page is watched that often. Probably why it starts with a "Contact Owner" link. Maybe because I said it wasn't a big deal. You've got a good point on the "appreciation" thing, though. The bot only notices disambig errors and treats them the same, whether they come from The Wikipedian of the Year or some vandal who may have meant Proton-enhanced nuclear induction spectroscopy instead. This robot really shouldn't be thanking anyone, without knowing what's what. Yes, it's polite, but insultingly so. Still not a big deal (to me), though. InedibleHulk (talk) 01:07, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi there, you've sent me a helpful comment that some of the links I inserted led to disambig pages. I had tried to input the exact page title, such as moksa (jainims) because that page exists. "Opt Out"
I did not appreciate the automated message this bot left. I shouldn't have to "opt out" of receiving what really seems to be a condescending message from a bot by posting a template on my talk page. The automated comment should be taken out of this bot's function. Agent 86 (talk) 13:08, 23 November 2012 (UTC)
- Insult to injury, it seems the bot doesn't even repair the error it claims to be pointing out. Agent 86 (talk) 13:10, 23 November 2012 (UTC)
- You've linked to a word or a phrase that could mean several different things. How is the bot supposed to know which one you meant? It tells you to fix it, because you have a human brain. And, as the person who linked the ambiguous word, you should know where you intend it to link better than anyone. If the bot doesn't slightly annoy you, you won't know you screwed up, and people clicking your Wikilink will go to the wrong place. Pretty helpful, I think. If it did repair these itself, and then notified us just to scold us, it would be different. On that note, I've fixed your link for you. InedibleHulk (talk) 22:18, 23 November 2012 (UTC)
- FYI, all I did was move info written by another editor. So I knew just as much as the bot about whatever the problem might have been. Maybe it should have spoken down to the original editor who wrote the substantive text instead. Agent 86 (talk) 08:39, 24 November 2012 (UTC)
- Maybe one day it will. I think, for now, it's wise to keep these bots at least semi-retarded, analytically. You don't want something that can read Wikipedia in a glance getting any bright ideas. Speaking of ideas, let's solve the mystery of whether linking to a disambig page on the disambig bot's talk page causes it to become confused and explode. Could come in handy someday. InedibleHulk (talk) 10:08, 24 November 2012 (UTC)

- The service provided by the bot are very valuable, but that notification language needs to be changed:
is condescending and arrogant. The person receiving the DPL bot message is part of Wikipedia. Saying "Wikipedia appreciates" denies that membership. Also, the bot is not authorized to speak on behalf of all Wikipedia, yet appears to do so by claiming "Wikipedia appreciates". The whole "your", "we", and "you've" language further creates a divide by classifying the person receiving the DPL Bot message as not being part of "We" and not being part of "Wikipedia." Telling the editor "Such links are almost always unintended" implies that is something that editor does not know. Most editors do not intentionally link to DAB pages and are aware that such linking is almost always unintended. There's no reason for a bot to tell a human something they already know as an editor. That just puts the bot in a Mr. Know-it-all position and insults the intelligence of the person receiving the message."Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that you've added some links pointing to disambiguation pages. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles."
I was going to change the template text, but the location of the template -- Template:DPL-bot_notification? -- was not included in the message. Like other template messages, the location of the template should be included in the message. I suggest changing the bot text to something like:
Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. At least one of those edits includes a link pointing to a disambiguation page, which merely list "Did you mean..." article titles:
- Article (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver)
- added a link pointing to DAB page
It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. You can read more at DPL bot FAQ and join the WikiProject at the DPL WikiProject. Thanks. <!-- Template:DPL-bot_notification --> -- DPL bot (talk) time, Date (UTC)
- -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 14:02, 28 November 2012 (UTC)
- That's a lot better. Perhaps you should share it with this bot's master, at User talk:JaGa. InedibleHulk (talk) 17:25, 28 November 2012 (UTC)
Suggestion
Is there a way for the bot to check to see whether the notified editor in fact made the change and, if so, send a note of thanks? I just made the changes suggested by this and it would be nice to see a followup thanks, something like: "Thanks for making the changes! -- DPL bot (talk) 18:09, 28 November 2012 (UTC)" -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 13:20, 28 November 2012 (UTC)

Bot dablinking pages when an included template is the perpetrator
Greetings, Your bot recently dablinked Hraschina meteorite. This is sort of wrong. The dabs are in Meteorites which is currently transcluded by over 100 pages... Is it possible for the bot to look deeper in future and tag templates rather than articles where appropriate? -Arb. (talk) 10:41, 1 December 2012 (UTC)

Hurricane Joan–Miriam → Hurricane Joyce
Actually I did mean to use the disambiguation page there as the link was intended to point to all Hurricanes Joyce (or rather the Atlantic ones) so in this case the disambiguation page was the best available target. Carolina wren (talk) 00:29, 2 December 2012 (UTC)
Tea Party
The bot recently notified me about adding a link to the disambig page Tea Party to the article The Tea Party. This was intentional, as the link is inside a hatnote saying "for other uses...". That's kind of the point. JIP | Talk 18:06, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
- Like the bot says, these links are almost always unintended. The bot can't analyze motives, it automatically sends a message to anyone who links to a disambig. In most cases, this is helpful. In cases like yours, it's fine to ignore it. Think of it as asking you if you're wrong, rather than telling you you are. InedibleHulk (talk) 20:52, 4 December 2012 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Bhadohi (Lok Sabha constituency), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Pratappur (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). John Chilembwe article
Thanks for this, as a fairly new contributor, I was a bit unsure about some links, but having read-up on Pipe-links after your note, things are clearer
I have re-written the article and added citations, but it still has the label:- its sources remain unclear because it lacks inline citations.
How is removing this dealt with?

Confusing notifications
Is there any point making confusing notifications like this? Had it been posted about an edit that was made today, it might be of some use but since I haven't edited the article in four days the first thing I felt was confusion. Since DPL bot doesn't include a diff of the edit that the message concerns, it makes it hard to work out what the message is about. As it happens, I did add the link but it took me a while to find the diff of the edit, which was this, made six days ago, my 7th last edit on the article and 291 edits down my contribution history. At best, that's a stale notification. --AussieLegend (✉) 13:14, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
- No need to look through edit histories. The bot says the problem was with a link named Wilmington. Just follow the link to the page, find "Wilmington" (either by just looking or using your browser's Find function) and edit it to point where you want. I've fixed this one for you. InedibleHulk (talk) 15:24, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
- The point was, I didn't know why I'd gotten the message so I had to look to find out why. I didn't think that DPL Bot had a 6 day backlog. I assumed that if I'd gotten the message today, it must have referred to an edit made today and that DPL Bot was confused. As for fixing it, how did you know that the Wilmington referred to was in Delaware? The sources only refer to "Wilmington, USA". --AussieLegend (✉) 16:31, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
- I don't see any source at all in the article, but a quick Google search turned up this, which also clarifies that "New Atlantis" is just a shell company, set up by Sea Shepherd. Maybe you'd like to use this source in the article? InedibleHulk (talk) 01:50, 17 December 2012 (UTC) Nevermind, I added it myself. InedibleHulk (talk) 01:57, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

Another incorrect notification
The bot posted this to my page: "We noticed though that when you edited Worldbuilding, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Homebrew" - I did not add that to that article, and the edits I did to the page did not even modify anything that linked to it in any way. Looks like your bot is broken. Bad robot, bad. DreamGuy (talk) 20:27, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
- That actually does look like a correct notification. In this edit there was a change from homebrew to just homebrew. Now how that happened or whether it was intentional or not, I don't know, but that change did introduce a new link to a DAB page. VernoWhitney (talk) 21:13, 24 December 2012 (UTC)

Not a disambiguation link
In this message the bot claims that the link Zero ideal is to a disambiguation page. Actually, that page is a redirect, and has been for over 5 years. It has never been a disambiguation page. Deltahedron (talk) 17:39, 16 January 2013 (UTC)
- Well, yes, but the redirect is to a disambiguation page, so it's the same problem either way. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 19:43, 16 January 2013 (UTC)
- Then the message should say so. In this particular case, the link is intended since the target of the redirect is not merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles either. Deltahedron (talk) 21:40, 16 January 2013 (UTC)
- I think the underlying problem, which the bot certainly had no way of detecting, is that Zero element is really a list of definitions, not a true disambiguation page for directing readers to distinct topic articles. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 22:55, 16 January 2013 (UTC)

Jay
Please excuse me - I'm confused about the system, but hope to learn! The article on the jay was edited by self by linking Britain and Ireland using . This was seen as disambiguation. How so! When you have finished with this I have other questions. Osborne 20:39, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
- Hello, Osborne. I don't think the bot will respond to you, since it is not programmed to do so :-), and its operator seems to be away for now. I assume you are referring to your edit to the Eurasian Jay article (not Jay; precision is important in this discussion). You did create links to Britain and Ireland using the correct syntax. The problem, as you will see if you click on the link to Britain, is that the word "Britain" is ambiguous. Since you were talking about bird ranges in a geographical sense, and birds don't care about political boundaries, it seems very likely that you meant the island of Great Britain. Since we want readers who click on that link to get to the relevant article, you should change it to read
Britain
. This is called "piping"; it lets us link the reader to the "Great Britain" article while having only the word "Britain" appear as the text of the link inside the "Eurasian Jay" article. Best wishes -- R'n'B (call me Russ) 16:39, 27 January 2013 (UTC)
Hi: you are dead right! I did mean "Great Britain"! I am pleased and grateful for your advice as I get rather cross with people who dont know the difference between England, Britain, Great Britain, UK, British Isles. As for "piping - thats is new to me, I will look into it. As to whether Britain or Great Briting is political, well to me they are the same, however I bow to your opinion/knowledge. I would be gratefull for your assistance on another matter (which I have not checked for the last few days). In the Irish Naturalists' Journal Euthyneura myrtilli Macquart is mentioned and I decided to try to add it. According to the article Ir. Nat I. 30: 55 -56 it is a a fly (Diptera: Hybotidae). However it seems there is another animal (a slug if I remenber correctly) and I tried to separate them and got the entry into wild confusion! (unless someone has sorted it out recently). Bot gives warnings if a page is merely restored
DPL bot gave me a warning here[[6], but I haven't edited the page in question, Michele Knotz, just restored it. Thanks, --Tikiwont (talk) 08:57, 28 January 2013 (UTC)
- When you "restored" the page, you did so by editing it. And, looking at the history, it does not appear that this was a simple revert to an earlier version; you started with an earlier version of the article but then altered that by removing the prod tag, thereby creating a new version of the article that had never existed before in precisely the same form. How do you propose that an automated process should detect that this was not simply an insertion of new text? --R'n'B (call me Russ) 15:13, 28 January 2013 (UTC)
- Ah that helps clarifying. I intended not editing anything related to wikilinks. In that sense the mere restore only shows up in the log but not in the edit history and I remembered vividly removing cleanly the prod tag. What I forgot is that i restored in two tranches, first the older version deleted as prod, removing the tag so that shouldn't trigger the bot. But then I restored the later stub, and that version came to sit between the restored one and mine with the bot later justly comparing my version to the one now preceding it in the history. So rather a particular case and nothing to worry about. Sorry for the trouble and thanks for having added this species to the bot environment.--Tikiwont (talk) 21:39, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

Disambiguation links
Thanks for the information! Beo34(talk) 1 March 2013 —Preceding undated comment added 15:58, 1 March 2013 (UTC)
Suggestion
First of all thanks for pointing out the disambiguation link fault. Second, a suggestion: the article that I am editing 'angle' has over 60 times the word 'turn' (the one which I left with a disambiguation link on the page) is used. It would be nice to have a way to know which word needs to be edited by the number word count. I mean how do I know if it was the first, 50th, or both times that 'turn' came up as an issue? Thanks again. John W. Nicholson (talk) 22:07, 1 March 2013 (UTC)
- There may be many "turn"s, but there should be only one Wikilinked. Open the edit window, use your browser's Find function and look for "[[turn". That should be the culprit. InedibleHulk (talk) 02:37, 2 March 2013 (UTC)
Pardon please
Sorry to say that I did not get what you siaid. -KrozanDarshandhari (talk) 05:24, 4 March 2013 (UTC)
- You added Nepali to an article, instead of Nepali language. The first link is to a list of pages with "Nepali" in the title. If you don't want to use the article's entire title, you can "pipe" links by separating the words like this:Nepali. Any text after the "|" will redirect to the article before it. I've fixed these three for you. InedibleHulk (talk) 13:00, 4 March 2013 (UTC)
A kitten for you!
Thanks for your help correcting the link I put on Sokal affair!!!
Trilobitealive (talk) 02:13, 5 March 2013 (UTC)
Suggestion
As well as pointing out disambiguation links, it would be useful to inform editors of new links in Category:Redirects from misspellings. It's very easy to use a common misspelling (e.g. Billie Holliday or T. S. Elliot without noticing, as the link appears OK. Colonies Chris (talk) 12:54, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
Thanks - Disambiguation March 7
Dear Bot, Thanks for the notification regarding the link pointing to the Lavaur disambiguation page I posted on Bridewell Palace. Now fixed. FClef (talk) 00:54, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
The bot just tagged this as having a large number of incoming links needing disambiguation. While there are a lot of links all but one are from non-article namespaces and there isn't much point in fixing them (as noted in the template documentation). Would it be possible to have the bot consider only article-space links? Hut 8.5 15:41, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
- When the bot ran, there were 47 links from a template that had this link transcluded in it. Someone has fixed the template, so now there are no links, and the bot will remove the notice the next time it runs. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 15:50, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
- I see, thanks. Hut 8.5 17:28, 8 March 2013 (UTC)

WGBH - which?
I got this message for adding the link WGBH for this article. Unfortunately, I can't clarify it further than that, it's just WGBH news, it's not clear from the article whether it was WGBH tv or radio or both or just their web site. --GRuban (talk) 16:46, 4 April 2013 (UTC)

DPL bot is sick
Dear DPL bot,
You left me this message recently. You told me I'd linked to the disambiguous page ABC. I'm a tad confused b/c I've gone over my recent edits, and I never linked to ABC! Is this a bug? Is the DPL bot not feeling well? NickCT (talk) 12:40, 10 April 2013 (UTC)
