links from disambig pages to disambig pages
I seem to be getting warnings for placing links to disambiguation pages from disambiguation pages. Linking between closely related disambiguation pages, however, is widespread and sensible practice. We just want to avoid links from article text to disambiguation pages. --dab (𒁳) 08:57, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
- I agree that closely related dabs should interlink, but intentional links to disambiguation pages should be linked through a (disambiguation) redirect per WP:INTDABLINK. If the link uses this syntax, the bot will not mark it as needing to be fixed.
- I went ahead and fixed Tudur; a piped link also would have worked. --JaGatalk 15:05, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
- You know, there have been several people confused by the INTDABLINK issue. I'm going to look into excluding them when I can - hatnotes and See also sections at the least, and disambig pages altogether are not off the table. Thanks for the comment, it helped make things clearer. --JaGatalk 19:47, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
Disambiguation link notification
Thanks very much for the information! I am very surprised that I did that -- since I was only copy editing this article and no nothing about the subject itself, and among other things was removing only nonexisting links (in response to the discussion). In the articles I translate from the German Wiki I do try to check all the links to make sure they go somewhere useful. However, all that being said, now that I have seen the link to this disambiguation page I think it is one of the exceptions that proves the rule. In the particular context of the "Ius" article this information is very useful! With best regards, --Remotelysensed (talk) 09:28, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for the note. I changed the link to "lex" per WP:INTDABLINK, which keeps your link to the disambig but also marks it as "don't fix". If you think it would look better piped, that would work as well. --JaGatalk 15:10, 17 November 2011 (UTC)

DAB notice
I received this notice from your bot, but I'm pretty sure I made no such edit. Cheers. de Bivort 15:49, 6 December 2011 (UTC)
- A vandal had deleted some content that contained the link to urchin, and when you reverted the vandalism, DPL bot mistakenly thought you had "added" the dablink. This doesn't happen when vandalism is reverted quickly, but when there's a lag between the vandalism and the reversion, this can happen. Sorry about the false positive. --JaGatalk 17:37, 6 December 2011 (UTC)
Not quite accurate
Hi. I have been notified that I have made several links to DISAM pages. In some instances that was true. In others I was just the most recent editor working on an article and did not actually create those links. Regards --Greenmaven (talk) 21:15, 6 December 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for the note. That would be a big problem, so I reviewed each dab link in the message, and found that they are indeed correct:
- Dinklage was linked to Patrimony here
- Little Horton was linked to MP here
- Patni Computer Systems was linked to Telecom here
- Philosophia Reformata was linked to World order here
- Sexual abuse scandal in the Catholic diocese of Fairbanks was linked to Aboriginal here
- The Blackfriars of Shrewsbury was linked to Welsh here
- Two-Spirit was linked to Seers here
- The one in Philosophia Reformata was especially annoying because all you did was fix an ill-formatted link, but the dablinks did all originate from your wikilinking/cleanup work. You may want to use the opt-out instructions; people doing maintenance work tend to get a lot of these messages. --JaGatalk 00:35, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
- My humble apologies: I have checked all the records you provided and found my memory was faulty. I have even found a better link for one of them having seen what an earlier editor had intended. I will stay opted in for now, because I want my edits to be valid. I will see how often my edits are in error. Regards --Greenmaven (talk) 03:50, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
- No apologies necessary. Thanks much for the notes. Cheers, --JaGatalk 05:02, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
- Would it be reasonable to include the edit diff link in future automated message posted on users' talk pages? Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 15:27, 8 December 2011 (UTC)
- I'd say I could, but I didn't want to make the message any larger than necessary. I'm willing to consider it, though. --JaGatalk 21:22, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

Hi, about the msg you sent me, i didn't add any link to Anterior (band). there was just some vandalism in that article by an IP which i inverted it back. it maybe added by other wikipedians. you can go and check the history of that article. Reza (Let'sTalk) 10:50, 8 December 2011 (UTC)
- Hi, Reza, and thanks for the message. You're right - that was a false positive. I've added code since to avoid this in the future - the bot won't send messages to people if they had "revert" or "vandal" in their edit summary when they added the dablink - but it will take a couple of days for the data to update. You shouldn't get any more messages from DPL bot for vandalism reverts going forward. --JaGatalk 13:50, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

BOT malfunction! BOT malfunction!
I received a notification about some link I supposedly inserted in a disambiguation article but, as can be verified at the History page of that article, no such insertion was made. - There's nothing wrong with the bot. When you created the article Edgardo Obregón, you started it with
- Edgardo Obregón (born 1999 in Mexico City, Mexico) is a football prodigy.
- The link to prodigy doesn't go to an article; it goes to a "Did you mean..." disambiguation page. The bot is asking you to fix that link. --JaGatalk 16:58, 16 December 2011 (UTC)

- No worries; you certainly aren't required to fix the dablink. Do you think the wording needs to be improved? It's a tricky thing to explain, especially when you're trying to take as little talk page real estate as possible. --JaGatalk 01:02, 17 December 2011 (UTC)

Thx for your notice. I understand what I have to do. But clicking the use the dpl bot and then clicking to the right term, I got the above error, even after logging out and in again. Any idea why? thy --SvenAERTS (talk) 13:19, 18 December 2011 (UTC)
- I'm guessing you clicked on "fix with Dab Solver", and then clicked "Save" after you fixed the disambig link. Dab Solver only keeps track of your login for a short time, so that's probably where your session data is being lost. If you go back into Dab Solver, try mousing over your username and click "Switch users" so you can get your credentials again. Sorry for the inconvenience! --JaGatalk 13:33, 18 December 2011 (UTC)

bug in bot
There is a bug in this bot program. It says I "added a link to the disambiguation page Robin Roberts", but I did not. My edit had added a piped link to Robin Roberts (baseball), as you can see at . The bot entry is at User talk:Eagle4000 #Disambiguation link notification: "Hi. In List of Philadelphia Phillies award winners and league leaders, you recently added a link to the disambiguation page Robin Roberts (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject. It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 10:44, 18 December 2011 (UTC)"
I hope you will be able to fix the bug, so it does not waste the time of editors, i.e., in checking the alleged dablink and (for some editors) composing and sending a "bug" report. This bot is a great idea, but not with its bug. Thank you. Eagle4000 (talk) 15:23, 18 December 2011 (UTC)
- There's no bug. In this edit, you added a direct link to Robin Roberts, and it's still there in the Sporting News NL Pitcher of the Year Award section. --JaGatalk 15:48, 18 December 2011 (UTC)
A kitten for you!
Thanks for catching the disambiguation link in the Dominance (Genetics) article. I solved it by removing the referenced term.
So, if locus goes to disambiguation, and I want to reference Locus (Genetics), do I insert Locus (Genetics) ?
I have a cover letter for a $3M grant due tomorrow, otherwise I would have experimented.
Smcewincarr (talk) 17:04, 18 December 2011 (UTC)
- Hi Smcewincarr. Right, you'd want to point it to Locus (genetics) using the following syntax:
- at the same locus
- That way the word "locus" would still display but the link would go to Locus (genetics). I went ahead and made the change to Dominance (genetics) so you could see it. Good luck on that grant!!!!! --JaGatalk 19:33, 18 December 2011 (UTC)

- Hi Mustafa. Two of the links you added were to "Did you mean..." pages, Today and Abdülmecit. The bot is asking you to let us know what article you intended. I went ahead and did the work; it was best to unlink "today", since it's a word we can expect the reader to know the definition of, and I linked Abdülmecit to Abdülmecid I, who I believe is the ruler you were writing about. Don't worry too much about it if you don't understand; you aren't required to clean up disambig links, and you can delete the message if you want. But if you do want to know more about disambiguation, please feel free to ask me any questions you have. Cheers, --JaGatalk 19:33, 18 December 2011 (UTC)

Consider making the language focused on next steps and focused on accusatory sounding words/phrases such as "your edits", "you added". Instead suggest "for the link foobar select the link on the foobar page that best fits what you'd like readers to visit".--RadioFan (talk) 17:52, 19 December 2011 (UTC)
dab links on dab pages

- Oh, I see what happened. Todd (surname) isn't a disambiguation page; it's a set index article. Set indices aren't held to the same rules as disambigs; most importantly, while a disambig should only have wikilinks to the "did you mean" terms, a set index is allowed to elaborate at length. Since it's more like an article than a disambig, I don't give the same exemption to set indices. --JaGatalk 16:44, 19 December 2011 (UTC)

DAB solver questions

Is there sandbox for DAB solver?
The two issues made me think that would be nice to have a way to try out DAB solver in a sandbox. That would make it easier to try out what went wrong and to demonstrate the dab links without affecting the article space. — Sebastian 19:11, 20 December 2011 (UTC)
Loss of session data
When I try to save, I get a message like "loss of session data". I even closed Mozilla (8.0) altogether, but that didn't help. I did the change manually, but that means I can't tell you now more exactly what happened. On the top right, the page displays "Sign In". So, is it necessary to sign in specifically for the DAB solver session? — Sebastian 19:11, 20 December 2011 (UTC)
- Well, not necessary. You could click "Show preview" or "Show changes" and then save, or sign in. The sign-in is so Dab Solver can get its hands on a Wikipedia session cookie to use on your behalf. --JaGatalk 23:02, 20 December 2011 (UTC)
Intended dab links
As a first-time user, I was confused at first when I got the bot message for an intended link. The problem is the word "fix", which doesn't do DAB solver's rich functionality justice. It hides the fact that this link can not just be used to fix a link, but also to just look at, or do other things. I can't think of a perfect wording, but maybe something along the lines of "look into it" might help.
So, what to do with such links? Here's an interesting case:
- 10 (number) (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver)
- added a link pointing to Dime
Actually, as "fix with Dab solver" displays correctly, there are even two ambiguous links. Both are intended. Let's look at the first one first:
- 10 dollar note: Here, DAB solver offers a link to 10 dollar note (disambiguation) (currently a redlink) as an option. Would that indicate to the bot (and other bots working on dab) that the link is OK? That would be a use of "(disambiguation)" which I don't see at WP:DAB, and which might lead to double redirects.
- Yep, that is exactly the correct course of action. I created the redirect so it's no longer a redlink. BTW, kudos on coming to grips with WP:INTDABLINK (and its purpose) so quickly! People are usually so confused by it I filter out common INTDABLINK scenarios when I can (links from other dabs and hatnotes, mostly). --JaGatalk 23:02, 20 December 2011 (UTC)
- dime: In addition to the above, there also exists the possibility to link to dime (coin) or dime (currency). I actually would do that now that I'm aware of the option, but for now I want to keep it in the state Dab solver found it. Anyway, is there a way for DAB solver to include these choices in the dropdown? — Sebastian 19:11, 20 December 2011 (UTC)
- I would probably delete that link since you have a link to the US dime in the same sentence. The dropdown usually has some redlinks at the very bottom, but since Dime (coin) redirects to the disambig, using that link wouldn't be much help - it would still need "fixing". --JaGatalk 23:02, 20 December 2011 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification about Bay Parkway
Hello DPL bot.
I added the link next to the Chinese translation for Bay Parkway because I wanted to add the Chinese translation for Bay Parkway. However, there are no actual sources to back it up. I also used google translate to see the Chinese translation for Bay Parkway, however when I found the Chinese translated article of NYC's Chinatowns 1, which shows the Chinese translation for Bay Parkway all the way at the bottom, it does not match what I found via google translate. I tried to set this Chinese translation for Bay Parkway to link it as 有海湾公园道, which did not go through as you will see it. That is why I set up this link "2" next to it to show some evidence of the Chinese translation for Bay Parkway. However, realizing there is no reliable source at this time to back up or clarify completely of the Chinese translation for Bay Parkway, I took it off.
I apologize for creating the disambiguation page and next time I will know not to use disambiguation pages that can confuse readers.
Please feel free to let me know of any editing concerns.

I really apologize for the misunderstanding and misinterpretation. Please always feel free and welcomed to let me know about any editing concerns.

If I understood you correct, you mean that the links like depression and department on my page are unnecessary. So I removed them all. You're welcome to point out more shortcomings on my page. Nnu-12-22100554 (talk) 09:05, 27 December 2011 (UTC)
- For those two links, I think that was the best solution. But you could also have used piped links to point the links where you wanted. For instance, the article College of Teacher Education of Nanjing Normal University had this line:
- the great Chinese educator Tao Xingzhi
- the great Chinese educator Tao Xingzhi
- Now, the link to Chinese goes to a disambiguation page; check it out. It should go to Han Chinese. Here's how I fixed it:
- the great Chinese educator Tao Xingzhi
- the great Chinese educator Tao Xingzhi
- and it now goes to the correct article, and looks the same. --JaGatalk 18:09, 27 December 2011 (UTC)

"check to confirm" link
Just received another Disambiguation link notification - these are very handy! In this case, AWB fixed a link by adding a missing bracket while I was doing something else. When I saw the "check to confirm" link, I thought this would take me to the article history so I could confirm that I (unintentionally) added a link. Based on the other feedback you've been receiving, this may be a useful addition to the automated messages. Keep up the good work! GoingBatty (talk) 15:26, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
- Yeah, I've been thinking about giving people the ability to see their diffs. The problem is, when multiple edits created dablinks, you have to give people multiple diffs, so they wouldn't always fit neatly into the message. I probably need to build some sort of report to give people access to all their dab-creating diffs. I'm traveling right now, but I'll start on something when I get back in a week or so. Thanks much for the feedback. Cheers, --JaGatalk 16:21, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
- Maybe just provide a link to the article history, and they can pick out their own diffs? Good luck! GoingBatty (talk) 16:27, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
Disambiguation link on St. Joseph's Hospital
For the record, the disambiguation link to St. Joseph's Hospital that I added to SEPTA Route 15 was meant to be temporary. I also added a redlink to St. Joseph's Hospital (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) to the dab page that another editor removed without justification. ----DanTD (talk) 14:32, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
- Maybe they deleted it because nothing linked to the redlink? I'm not sure. It might have helped to add the redlink to SEPTA Route 15 before adding the redlink to the disambiguation page. --JaGatalk 16:26, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
- I dropped a note at GB fan's page about the redlink. I'll straighten this out if I can. --JaGatalk 16:33, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
Shipindex pages
This bot is really useful. Does it also check links to pages tagged with shipindex? These are also dab pages, and would appear to be within the scope of what the bot is doing. Mjroots (talk) 11:28, 1 January 2012 (UTC)
- Right now, set index pages are out of the scope of this bot. I would like to help clean up links to these pages - we really need that - but in all honesty it will probably be a couple of years before I can do that. --JaGatalk 18:04, 1 January 2012 (UTC)

Instead of going to the National Park page you expected, it goes to a "Did you mean..." page. The bot is asking you to fix the link. I went ahead and took care of it for you so you can see how it was done. I hope that helped. Cheers, --JaGatalk 21:28, 1 January 2012 (UTC)

Opt in
I have noticed the number of notifications on User talk:Farrtj. Having looked at the rationale for the bot on Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/DPL bot 2, I wonder if a single notification with an offer of opting in might be more appropriate - if the user likes the bot they will want to use it; if they don't like it they need do no more. Also, perhaps the text could point out a useful tool, such as User:Anomie/linkclassifier, which identifies on each page where links go to. I use that and find it very helpful.
In addition, I was recently notified of a link I didn't place - I had done a history merge in which I restored an earlier version, so the bot was picking up on a revert edit. This implies that patrollers who revert vandalism and restore a page which contains dablinks will be getting messages. SilkTork ✔Tea time 13:50, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
- Link classifier is already listed in the FAQ, but the link probably should be moved to the second paragraph in the notification. — Dispenser 19:41, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
- I've been trying to keep the message as short as possible, but I might try to find a way to squeeze the LC link into the message. If I've learned anything with this bot, it's that people don't read FAQ's. Regarding opt-in, I'm not going to do that. I don't have the time to devise and implement an opt-in system, and there's no need; opt-out is working perfectly well, evidenced by how the thank you notes outnumber the complaints by far. --JaGatalk 17:16, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for notifying dab links in articles I started. I have resolved all links that you reported except links to Chowk. Suggesting annother Excemption rule
Last night I got a warning about John McCaa for having added a link to to a generic DAB page that points at 3 alternate pages. I can definitely say that the link was intended as I was trying to use the right context (Presidential Primary Season vs Party Convention). It might be a good idea to write an exemption for editors who have made a significant (upwards of 5000) edits to not suggest that they goofed. Hasteur (talk) 14:03, 15 January 2012 (UTC)
- It isn't a warning; it's a service to inform editors about disambiguation links they've inadvertently created. Regardless, if you don't like the messages, you can always opt out. --JaGatalk 01:23, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

Possible bot error
Hi, this morning the bot put a dab notice on Discography of the Soul series, saying that there were 15 links to dab pages... but dablinks.py returns 0, and I can't find any dab links on the page or in any templates on the page. Not sure why that happened, just thought you should know. --PresN 16:06, 23 January 2012 (UTC)
- The links came through the template Soul series, to which an IP had added 15(!) disambig links. That template has since been fixed. --JaGatalk 18:40, 23 January 2012 (UTC)
- Also, I've changed the database scripts so DPL bot now ignores disambiguation links coming from templates. That will avoid a lot of confusion in the future; thanks much for bringing this to my attention. --JaGatalk 22:15, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

Links
When it comes to linking people or disambiguation you can edit it if you think there was mistakes in the editing, most of the time when links are wrong they are honest mistakes. Dencod16 (talk) 13:00, 27 January 2012 (UTC)
- I'd say almost all disambiguation links from editing are honest mistakes. The problem is, Wikipedia offers no way for a user to easily check whether they've created disambig links or not; this bot is my attempt to fix that. Did you get the impression that the message was making an accusation? If so, please let me know what gave you that impression, and I'll do what I can to improve the message. Thanks for the head's up. This is a great idea for a bot. Eomund (talk) 03:26, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

Disambiguation Page Fix
Thanks for pointing out the link to disambiguation page Platform. I changed the link at the List of Wii games that use the Classic Controller to reflect Platform game.
- Perfect. Thanks for the note. --JaGatalk 02:27, 18 February 2012 (UTC)

- Indeed it does. Fantastically useful service, and one I always act on. Thank you. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:03, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
Indeed, it does. If only it had been around for my first thousand articles....I am sure I have left many and many an ambiguity out there in the WP zone.

limits on lists?
I've created ~2000 stubs in the last few months, largely using a script. I had been planning on using the bot to disambiguate links after the fact, but I have a feeling that the two batches I've had so far are far from all the links that need to be rescued. Is there a backlog or an internal limit that's keep the bot from reporting them to me? Is there a good alternative I can use?
- Well, first I'd like the say I really like the collaboration here - the idea of you letting DPL bot help you with cleanup seems efficient and useful. As to your question, no, there's no limit on quantity, but there is a limit on time - the bot basically sends no more than one message per person per week, summing up that week's dablinks. Do you suspect DPL bot has overlooked some of your recent dablinks?
- The only other resource I currently have for tracking another person's dablinks is this report, in which you're listed at #2. Is that of any help? I keep meaning to create a "dablinks by a specific user" report but haven't got around to it. --JaGatalk 20:48, 13 February 2012 (UTC)
- I suspect that I've see all the links I need to disambiguate now. The other tool you link to is very useful.
- A point of feedback: when doing this work I typically disambiguate the same link dozens of times, almost always to the same links (because my work is topic-based). It would be great to see the links I've used before become faster, easy to select. BTW the descriptions of the work is at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_New_Zealand#Wikipedia:WikiProject_Missing_encyclopedic_articles.2FNZ.2FDictionary_of_New_Zealand_Biography (finishing up) and Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Australia#Australian_Dictionary_of_Biography (about the get started) Stuartyeates (talk) 05:48, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
- I don't think there's a tool that does exactly what you want, but AWB could be of help. Let's say you want to clean up a bunch of links to Victoria. You could then:
- Open AWB (approval required for use).
- Choose a Source. This could be your own text file list of article titles, or all members of a category, or even simply everything that links to Victoria - there are lots of options. Then click Make list.
- Remove anything from the Source list you don't want to work on.
- Click on the "Disambig" tab to the right of the Source box.
- Enable disambiguation and enter "Victoria" as the link to disambiguate, Load links.
- Go to the "Start" tab and, well, Start.
- That gives you some degree of automation over the process, although you are still required to choose the correct option for each link. Another possibility is WikiCleaner, which does mass-editing of disambig links. Unlike AWB, though, you cannot specify your own list of articles to scan, or get content from category members. The only way to make your list is to specify what disambiguation page you want to work on. So you would specify "Victoria" in the login page, and then you would have to remove all entries from the list that you aren't working on. Once that's done, though, you can use some simple commands to say something like "in this list, replace every instance of Victoria with Victoria". Then you kick it off and it grinds through each page in the list, automatically fixing each one for you as it goes. That would be easiest for you, unless it's a real hassle to cut the source list down to size. One must be careful with WikiCleaner because it is a very powerful tool. --JaGatalk 15:53, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
