Name
[edit]I have moved the article and reverted the POV by Ketabtoon (talk · contribs), using reference from Encyclopaedia Britannica. Tajik (talk) 19:22, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
As an Afghan i insist on calling the mountain range "Spin Ghar", because the region is predominantly inhabited by Pashtuns and even Farsi-speaking Kabulis (for example my family) prefer the Pashto name. I don´t know how to edit an article´s title, so please change it if you read this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.14.247.72 (talk) 23:38, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
Spin Ghar proof
[edit]The mountain is widely known as Spin Ghar. I will definitely give you some information to back my claim.
"sits on an infiltration route from the Spin Ghar mountains between Nangahar province and Pakistan's lawless Tribal Areas, where bin Laden is still thought to be hiding." [1]
"The Mountain tops of Sping Ghar and Lakay Ghar can handle heliborne landings and Mujahideen air defense posture was...." [2]
"area of the western Spin Ghar (Safed Koh). Range than to the Zhawar Kili region to the south, but Beck was obviously correct in his ..." [3]
"Natural forest is found in 11 districts adjacent to Spin Ghar." [4]
"Two major mountains in the eastern part of Afghanistan include the Sping Ghar in the north..." [5]
"After a pitched battle near Spin Ghar left nine Afghan soldiers and 40 Taliban dead" [6]
"location of bin Laden in the western Spin Ghar Range, near a prominent fault zone" [7]
"Ali and Zaman both assured our people that they had forces in blocking positions on the Spin Ghar (mountains) when there were" [8]
If these are not enough, than you are welcome to google Spin Ghar. (Ketabtoon (talk) 20:14, 9 August 2009 (UTC))
- I suggest you study the rules of Wikipedia before editing any other articles. You should begin with Wikipedia:Naming_conventions. I won't revert you this time, but I will ask admins for help. Encyclopaedia Britannica cannot be overruled by citing some 3rd class travel-blogs and newspapers. As for Google:
- 2,930 hits for "Spin Ghar"
- 5,250 hits for "Safed Koh"

Title
[edit]The most common name if this mountain, in English books, is Safed koh 763 times. Safid mounain range is used in britannica and it should be mentioned in this article, but it is not much common in English books (only one (Britannica)). Alefbe (talk) 20:16, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
In my view, Safēd Kōh and Spin Ghar are two differend mountains. Safēd Kōh is west of Herat, Spin Ghar is on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. --Goldzahn (talk) 11:20, 31 October 2011 (UTC)
- I suggest moving it to Safed Koh. And in our article here, the link for "Spin Ghar" leads to nowhere, while the link for Safed Koh leads to Encyclopaedia Brittanica. Every serious English language source that I come across mentions this mountain range only as Safed Koh. From older sources to the new ones such as CIA and Oxford dictionary. Actually US defence Ministry mentions that "Spin Ghar" is just a name that locally refers to Tora Bora. ماني a.k.a. [[User:Mani1]] (talk) 17:46, 24 April 2020 (UTC)
Requested move 21 September 2024
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: moved. Moved as an uncontested request with minimal participation. If there is any objection within a reasonable time frame, please ask me to reopen the discussion; if I am not available, please ask at the technical requests page. I don't see any opposition with the move, and since there is no consensus here after two relisting, I am moving this per uncontested consensus as well as this talk page discussion in 2022. The nominator provided much sources, and I see no opposition, if not the name change period. (closed by non-admin page mover) Safari ScribeEdits! Talk! 19:58, 13 October 2024 (UTC)
Spīn Ghar → Safed Koh – Restore the article to its previously discussed name. The article was moved to a local name [4], but per the discussion on the talk page, it was restored[5] to its original stable WP:COMMONNAME. Ainty Painty (talk) 04:40, 18 September 2024 (UTC) This is a contested technical request (permalink). – robertsky (talk) 07:51, 21 September 2024 (UTC) — Relisting. - Reverting a 15-year-old move is a bit of a stretch here, in my opinion. I don't really see an obvious common name. A discussion might be a good idea. C F A 💬 12:45, 18 September 2024 (UTC)
- I agree - moved to contested. After that long, the title is either the status quo or nobody noticed - either way, a discussion wouldn't hurt. ASUKITE 15:57, 18 September 2024 (UTC)
- I apologize for the confusion. The redirect I mentioned was incorrect. This is not a 15-year-old move. In fact, this is the second time the article has been moved. Previously, it was restored to the romanized title “Safēd Kōh” based on the talk page CONSENSUS, and it remained stable for over 8 years until it was moved by an unconfirmed user in 2017. A discussion was required for moving to a new or undiscussed title. Here, I am simply requesting the restoration of the last discussed title. Ainty Painty (talk) 05:42, 19 September 2024 (UTC)
- The 7 years since 2017 is more than long enough to be a stable title. See WP:TITLECHANGES and WP:SVTRT. This would require a new RM. SilverLocust 💬 07:35, 19 September 2024 (UTC)
- The current title has not remained stable for seven years. The article was moved again in 2022, but that move was reverted by Robertsky, who did not notice the consensus on the talk page [6]. Furthermore, if you still contest this or are not convinced, I suggest moving this discussion to the article's talk page and starting a new RM. Ainty Painty (talk) 06:36, 21 September 2024 (UTC)
- 2022 was a time away and many decisions had been made since and decisions since then are fuzzy. if I didn't notice the talk page discussions, apologies. if I did notice the talk page discussion, it may have been a decision based on the discussion is a WP:LOCALCON that an anonymous editor had challenged and I reverted accordingly. Nonetheless, opening a more formal RM would be a better option. – robertsky (talk) 07:50, 21 September 2024 (UTC)
