Synthesis
[edit]Evaporation of solutions of rhodium trichloride and excess ammonium chloride:
- RhCl3 + 3NH4Cl → (NH4)3RhCl6
Physical properties
[edit]The compound forms red crystals. Slightly soluble in water.
Chemical properties
[edit]The compound undergoes partial hydrolysis in dilute aqueous solutions:
- (NH4)3[RhCl6] + H2O → (NH4)2[RhCl5(H2O)] + NH4Cl
Uses
[edit]Ammonium hexachlororhodate(III) hydrate is a raw material and intermediate used in organic synthesis, pharmaceuticals, and agrochemicals.[5]
