WikiCup 2024 March newsletter

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Move review for AA Rano Industries

Sir I need more explanation about the article AA Rano Industries and Dandume market the are yet to review is there anything I can do.

Thanks Pape2023 (talk) 23:04, 28 February 2024 (UTC)

@Pape2023 Hi there. I’m sure you don’t really mean a move review as that is not the case here. The article you’re talking about is pending review by patrollers and it has already been tagged as reading like a promo. Perhaps you have to fix that by rewriting the article in a way that is not promotional. Hope this helps. Regards, Vanderwaalforces (talk) 05:41, 29 February 2024 (UTC)

New page reviewer granted

Hi Vanderwaalforces. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group. Please check back at the permissions page in case your user right is time-limited or probationary. This user group allows you to review new pages through the Curation system and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or nominate them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is vital to maintaining the integrity of the encyclopedia. If you have not already done so, you must read the tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the deletion policy. If you need any help or want to discuss the process, you are welcome to use the new page reviewer talk page or ask via the NPP Discord. In addition, please remember:

  • Be nice to new editors. They are usually not aware that they are doing anything wrong. Do make use of the message feature when tagging pages for maintenance so that they are aware.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted. Please be formal and polite in your approach to them – even if they are not.
  • If you are not sure what to do with a page, don't review it – just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Accuracy is more important than speed. Take your time to patrol each page, including checking for copyright violations using Earwig's copyright violation detector, checking for duplicate articles, and evaluating sources (both in the article, and if needed, via a Google search) for compliance with the general notability guideline.
  • Please review some of our flowcharts (1, 2) to help ensure you don't forget any steps.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you also may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In cases of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, or long-term inactivity, the right may be withdrawn at administrator discretion. If you can read any languages other than English, please add yourself to the list of new page reviewers with language proficiencies. Hey man im josh (talk) 13:48, 8 March 2024 (UTC)

Adding SaaS metrics to Software as a Service

Hi, could you help me understand why these changes were reverted since you did not add any edit summary other than the revert message: https://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?diff=1213046364&oldid=1213046086&title=Software_as_a_service Inffer (talk) 07:21, 11 March 2024 (UTC)

@Inffer Hello there. No you didn't check well, I left an edit summary. While that is not only the case, it also appears you're not properly interpreting the sources, especially the part where you cited the https://www.mckinsey.com/ website. It would make sense if you could rephrase what you wrote.
Also, carefully look at the new section you added and cited https://www.irjet.net/archives/V8/i6/IRJET-V8I650.pdf. Vanderwaalforces (talk) 08:06, 11 March 2024 (UTC)
Thank you now I understand the problem. I will rephrase the McKinsey cited part to match the source.
And fixed the IRJET source URL, sorry about that. Inffer (talk) 08:50, 11 March 2024 (UTC)

Robots.txt revision

Hey! Sorry if I'm missing something, but you reverted an edit of mine on the Robots.txt page. I didn't see any edit summary (beyond the standard revert message,) and I wanted to know what was wrong with it? I trust that you know why you reverted it, but I can't learn what my mistake was without an edit summary. Hyonk Tea (talk) 13:54, 13 March 2024 (UTC)

@Hyonk Tea Hi there, yep, I did add "Unclear" to the default edit summary. Either way, your edit appears to be an extrapolation of the cited source's intent to ensure adequate parsing capacity for individual robots.txt files. Your interpretation is consistent with the source's mandate that the parsing limit must be at least 500 KiB, ensuring that crawlers can handle robots.txt files up to that size. However, the source does not explicitly mention a total size limit for all robots.txt files from a domain. It focuses on the parsing limit for individual robots.txt files. Your edit also seems to extend the source's guidance to a broader context, which is not directly supported by the source text but aligns with the principle that crawlers must be capable of parsing larger robots.txt files. Overall, the source supports the requirement for a minimum parsing capability of 500 KiB, but it does not specifically address a cumulative size limit across all robots.txt files from a domain. If you could find a source that addresses all these, you could add your statement back citing the source.
Hope this helps. Regards, Vanderwaalforces (talk) 15:20, 13 March 2024 (UTC)

Request on 10:36:00, 15 March 2024 for assistance on AfC submission by Chukwudi Utazi

I need assistance determining what a reliable source is. In my submission, I tried as much as possible to cite many sources to lend credence to the article but these sources have been adjudged unreliable.

What do I do please? It's a little discomforting for me right now.

Chukwudi Utazi (talk) 10:36, 15 March 2024 (UTC)

@Chukwudi Utazi Hi there. I hope, after reading this, you are no longer confused. You can take a look at WP:NGRS, a page I am currently maintaining for sources that are reliable in the Nigerian context. You did quite a good job at that draft but the major problem is that there are too many unsourced statements. For example, the "Legal Career" does not cite any source at all, the Entrepreneurship section cites few sources, and so on. This is the issue, where did you get the information from? Kindly cite the sources you got the information from and make sure they align with WP:NGRS otherwise, remove them entirely and lets work with the available and reliable sources.
Hope this helps. Vanderwaalforces (talk) 10:48, 15 March 2024 (UTC)

Goldie19 (talk) 17:17, 17 March 2024 (UTC)

Hello Goldie19, hope your Sunday was splendid. This draft was declined for more or less the same reason why it was draftified in March 2023, that's literally 1 year ago. Let's not pretend, I mean, I don't know how to, Adegboyega is simply not notable for a standalone article. Take a look at the very simple and generic WP:GNG, it's clear that the subject fails GNG. I presume the first three sources you presented will be your best sources, so, the Guardian one may look good, but the ThisDay and Leadership ones do not, see WP:INDEPENDENT, WP:SECONDARY. Do not move the article back to mainspace as it would be a waste of time, I will take it to AfD and it will be deleted. Adegboyega is not notable for a standalone article, maybe yet. Vanderwaalforces (talk) 20:07, 17 March 2024 (UTC)

Your revert here created both wp:overlink problems, as well as a deletion of an end-year that keeps the article from misleading readers into thinking there is not yet an end year. https://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=New_London_High_School_(Connecticut)&oldid=1214275182&diff=cur&diffonly=0 2603:7000:2101:AA00:39E3:ECA3:D3A:7B1B (talk) 03:39, 18 March 2024 (UTC)

Hi there. That is correct, you can’t add an end year without a source, what if it’s not true, you also didn’t explain using the edit summary box at the bottom of the big edit box. Vanderwaalforces (talk) 05:16, 18 March 2024 (UTC)
Do you believe that all end years are reflected in the refs where there are end years? And there was a sufficient edit summary. And you added links that violated wp:overlink - which you have not explained. Nor did you explain why you did that in your edit summary. --2603:7000:2101:AA00:79C8:18F2:59F9:859F (talk) 19:30, 18 March 2024 (UTC)

About Silviu Istrate

I know Youtube shouldn't be a source. I addded all the articles that I could find on Google about him, yet it is not enough. That's why I used Youtube. And I used it for his political views, which he expressed directly (for example, at "he self-identifies as a democratic socialist", I put a source where he said "I am a democratic socialist" RAMSES$44932 (talk) 07:09, 21 March 2024 (UTC)

@RAMSES$44932 Hi there, YouTube should not be used in such context, in fact, stating that "he self-identifies as a democratic socialist" and citing a source where HE said "I am a democratic socialist" and published it, is a perfect example of what Wikipedia refers to a source that is self-published, it is a good example of a source that is dependent on the subject of the article. This is the main problem throughout the article.
Try to use only the sources you can find that are not YouTube, it's better to have a stub than to have a full-fledge article that relies significantly on unreliable self-published sources. Vanderwaalforces (talk) 07:45, 21 March 2024 (UTC)

Have a look at this

Hi Vanderwaalforces,

Have a look at this it has the same MO with the other articles I've AFD'ed. Author also claims image is own work which mean he/she has a COI with the subject. Jamiebuba (talk) 21:20, 24 March 2024 (UTC)

@Jamiebuba Hello. It appears that the subject passes GNG, but COI is smelling. Tagging with {{COI}} would work and also dropping a UW on their talk page to disclose properly. The file on commons could be nominated for deletion based on permission grounds, wdyt? Vanderwaalforces (talk) 21:40, 24 March 2024 (UTC)
Since they're claiming its own work and I've done a reverse image search and there nothing i think the file on commons can't be nominated. I'll just have to tag the article for COI. Jamiebuba (talk) 21:48, 24 March 2024 (UTC)
@Jamiebuba That works! Vanderwaalforces (talk) 22:56, 24 March 2024 (UTC)

Sir I am new editor I create an article Rano Air but if I searched it will not appear in the Google.sir I need more explanation.

@Bamalli01 Hello there! I see that you are a Nigerian editor and I love that. I also see that you have been warned about paid editing just today, and it all centres on the articles you've created. You, reaching out to me to ask why the article you've created is not "appearing in the Google" is another red flag. You reply to the message on your talk page reads sincere and if you really are not involved in what you were warned about, I will advise you to simply stop editing articles like that (or even stop creating articles for now, since you are new) and focus on other topics. You could find interesting copyedits to make at Special:Homepage. When you do this, you'll be exposed to other policies and guidelines and also guide from other editors. You can then later decide to create articles and you'd find yourself doing well. Please, I want you to listen to me and follow instructions. Vanderwaalforces (talk) 15:40, 26 March 2024 (UTC)
