Apollo Palatinus
Hi there. I've just added some comments to the FA review page for the Temple of Apollo on the Palatine. I see that that section has been archived, but I hope it's not too late to make further changes. Cheers, Choliamb (talk) 14:41, 1 October 2023 (UTC)
- Added another list of suggestions based on a careful rereading of the whole article. Sorry for the nitpicks, but they come with a statement of support, so it's γλυκύπικρον, as Sappho would say. Choliamb (talk) 20:26, 4 October 2023 (UTC)
- Not at all: to misquote another, all the more dulce for being utile. I've just had a quick look through and they're a particularly sharp set of points, and I'm extremely grateful to have the eyes of a subject-matter expert on the article. Will work through them and post replies, though I don't expect to be quibbling much. UndercoverClassicist T·C 20:35, 4 October 2023 (UTC)

- I just returned from a few days away and saw the promotion and your last comment to me on the FAC page; responding here, since the discussion there is closed. You're very welcome. You have a remarkable ability to respond to suggestions without becoming prickly, which I mostly lack but greatly admire. Feel free to ping me if you want my comments on anything else in the future. I tend not to do much editing myself, but as you've already seen, I am more than willing to stick my nose into other people's business. (And of course, feel free not to ping me if you'd prefer that I not butt in. I'm fine with that too.) Cheers, Choliamb (talk) 14:25, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you: you gave an excellent and extremely useful review -- in so many ways the best of what FAC can be. Most of my articles at the moment seem to be archaeological biographies, generally on the Greek rather than the Roman side: I don't think I'll have another at FAC for a little while, but would be most grateful for your input whenever I do have anything there. Wow, and another FA (this one) and another TFA, Kyriakos Pittakis, "about another Ephor General of Greece. Where Kavvadias was a bureaucrat, professionaliser and master politician, Pittakis... wasn't. This story involves revolution, forgery, academic intrigue and at least two cases where Pittakis was almost killed by the ancient monuments he obsessively loved. Pittakis is not a wonderfully documented subject: barring a few book chapters, very few biographical works have been written about him. His early life in particular is obscure, thanks in part to his very ordinary origins, which put him into contrast (and sometimes conflict) with the well-to-do archaeologists that often surrounded him."! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:06, 15 October 2023 (UTC)
Today, it's a place that inspired me, musings if you have time. My corner for memory and music has today a juxtaposition of what our local church choirs offer. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:31, 20 October 2023 (UTC)

- Ha - thanks; appreciate your good humour with the peanuts I've thrown in. Thanks also for the fix on ἔρροι: I assume the point is basically the same ("Nestor's cup can get lost; this one's better")? UndercoverClassicist T·C 10:55, 1 November 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, I think so – I just thought your "may it go to ruin" was a little over-dramatic! Caeciliusinhorto-public (talk) 10:57, 1 November 2023 (UTC)
- (Also, I have my eye on your BM aryballos – I'm currently putting off finishing reviewing Satala Aphrodite but if nobody has picked that up when I have some spare time I'll review it) Caeciliusinhorto-public (talk) 10:59, 1 November 2023 (UTC)
- May well be: the reason I put that translation in in the first place was that I couldn't immediately work out what it meant, and then I remembered it from Medea, where she says πᾶς δόμος ἔρροι ("may his whole house go to ruin"). It seems to be fairly common (and fairly strong) in the optative for Euripides, but as far as I can see nobody else seems to use it in that mood (which surely must weight the scales a bit as to whether it's popping up the eighth century...). Did wonder whether "Nestor's cup can go to hell" wouldn't be a good rendering, but probably best to defer to the professionals.
- Thanks also in advance if you do get to the aryballos: I seem to be struggling to pick up GA reviewers at the moment! UndercoverClassicist T·C 11:05, 1 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi, I am trying to publish as a draft a translation of a page in Hebrew, but I am getting the 'An error occurred while saving the page.' error message. - Hi - yes, you should. I normally get that error when my internet connection isn't very good: it might be something like that rather than a permissions error? Otherwise, perhaps try making edits to other pages first: if some of those work, give it another go?

Question from MathDementor (19:00, 10 November 2023)
Hi, Can we chat about my page for my class? I'd like to get some feedback and find out what I need to adjust to have it published. Thanks! --MathDementor (talk) 19:00, 10 November 2023 (UTC)

- Thank you for your willingness! I think I posted this request in the wrong place. However, if you have time, feedback would be great! MathDementor (talk) 21:24, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
- OK: there's a few steps here to getting it ready for publication. This might seem like quite a lot: do please let me know if I can explain anything in more detail.
- The first question is the most important: can you prove that the article meets the criteria to be included on Wikipedia at all? The issue here is our various notability guidelines, which set out the rules for what can and can't have a page on this site. For biographies of academics, your best bet is usually to show either of three things:
- The person has been recognised as one of the top academics in their field, generally shown by prestigious honours like named (full) professorships, prestigious academic awards, membership of selective learned societies or the publication of Festschrifts.
- The person has written more than one book, and those books have been reviewed in major publications (these need not be strictly academic books: Emily Hauser, for instance, has an article partly on the strength of her fiction books, though she's an academic by profession).
- Multiple serious, independent, reliable sources have published articles discussing the person and their work in detail (not simply mentioning it, citing it, or talking about it in passing).
- At the moment, I'm not seeing any of these in the article, which means it's worth thinking about whether it's the right time to write it at all: if it doesn't pass one of these criteria, it's likely to be nominated for deletion and removed. There are plenty of people who are doing great things and will have articles, but simply haven't yet received enough coverage in published sources for us to write an article about them. I'd suggest looking at this as your first priority: if/when you can put together enough evidence to clear that bar, it would be worth thinking in more depth about how to write the article. UndercoverClassicist T·C 22:14, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for your willingness! I think I posted this request in the wrong place. However, if you have time, feedback would be great! MathDementor (talk) 21:24, 10 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from Diansusanto787 on Michigan–Ohio State football rivalry (06:48, 28 November 2023)
Hi Sir/mdm, I found the information listed in this post is somewhat not correct. In the section "Big Ten Conference" the newly edited post said Michigan leads the series 61-51-6, while after I checked, that 61 wins went back before 1918 Big Ten Conference match up (Michigan has 12 wins and 2 ties before 1918 game). I was just wondering, which one is the correct information?
Thanks. --Diansusanto787 (talk) 06:48, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
- If you're not sure which one is right, the best place to raise discussions about content is on the article's talk page: in this case that's Talk:Michigan–Ohio State football rivalry. It will help if you can show where you found the new information. If however there is material in the article that isn't cited to anything, and which is contradicted by a reliable, independent, published secondary source, you can just go ahead and make the change, adding in a citation (the best way to do that is to use ref tags,
<ref>information about the source</ref>
) to show the evidence on which the correct information is based. UndercoverClassicist T·C 07:10, 28 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from Ludensg (02:32, 30 November 2023)
Hello! I just edited this page https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Raoul_Dufy to approach a more encyclopedic neutral tone, but accidentally clicked publish before typing what changes I had made into the box! Is there a way for retroactively doing this? Thanks in advance! --Ludensg (talk) 02:32, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
- So that I've understood this right: you made all the changes but wanted to leave an edit summary? If that's the case, you can make a "dummy edit" (add a space at the end of the article, which will be ignored by the system) and put the summary there, indicating that it applies to the previous edit. UndercoverClassicist T·C 07:12, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
- Got it! Thanks! Also, I was wondering, at which point do you think that someone can decide that it's already appropriate to remove the maintenance template for the article's tone? I rewrote most of the article to fit the tone, but refrained from removing the template because I'm new haha. Ludensg (talk) 20:01, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
- Anyone can remove a banner, as long as the issue is fixed -- I've gone ahead and done it for this article, as I can't see any sign of bad tone in its current form. Nice work. UndercoverClassicist T·C 21:40, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
- A note--I've reverted edits by the new editor Ludensg, which didn't improve the article, and resulted in some fractured prose. I've respected the decision to remove the tone template. 2601:19E:4180:6D50:65F5:930C:B0B2:CD63 (talk) 05:40, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
- I'll be more specific--the edits weren't a complete loss, but had too many problems, including unnecessary verbiage and euphemisms: His work gained some notable recognition; providing an early affirmation of his talent; Dufy maintained his painting practice; his exposure to Paul Cézanne's art influenced him to embrace a more subdued technique; Dufy formulated his unique artistic style. This distinctive style encompassed the arrangement of skeletal structures; His artistic contributions included; Notably, his illustrations were featured; He later passed away; Dufy's final resting place; he was laid to rest near the artist Henri Matisse. My antennae are up for AI generated prose. At any rate, the article could use copy editing, but this wasn't the best alternative. 2601:19E:4180:6D50:65F5:930C:B0B2:CD63 (talk) 06:08, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
- Got it, I understand the AI worry. I just thought that those extra parts sort of accommodated the information in a less biased way. Something about the way it was originally written seemed not impartial. But I guess it comes with the territory of writing about art. Like the article used a lot of classifying words without in-line citations, so I wanted to work around that. Ludensg (talk) 15:28, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
- However, I don't understand why you reversed my edit that changed this sentence: "By 1950, his ability to paint was diminished when his hands were impaired by rheumatoid arthritis and he had to fasten a brush to his hand to work. " I still think my version read way more clearly: "By 1950, his abilities were affected by rheumatoid arthritis, leading to adaptations in his painting method (mainly the fastening of a brush to his hand)" Ludensg (talk) 15:32, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
- Given the number of problematic revisions, it's preferable in such cases to do a mass reversion rather than cherry-pick. Per that specific sentence, the original version is more direct. - I've made something of a compromise edit: the original paragraph on La Fée Electricité was, I suspect, the main reason for the tone template, and I think Ludensg's edits there did represent a significant improvement. As alluded to here, there definitely are good aspects of that series of edits which can be pulled back out, though it would be good to see some sources brought in now to back up what has been written. UndercoverClassicist T·C 21:45, 2 December 2023 (UTC)
- Cool! I think you left both versions of the paragraph up in the article, so it was there twice. I erased the previous version. Ludensg (talk) 21:14, 4 December 2023 (UTC)

- There are a few situations in which creating a second account is fine: those include when you've lost the password to your original account (though you should put a link to that account on your user page, and consider making its user page redirect to your new one). As long as you don't use the two accounts in a way that implies that they're two people (for instance, voting twice in a discussion, using one to review the work of the other, and so on), it's absolutely fine. Question from TessBrownie (14:14, 13 December 2023)
hi, im interested in creating a new page for a scientist --TessBrownie (talk) 14:14, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
- Hello! Most people start off their editing by working to improve existing pages: there can be a little bit of a learning curve in picking up the house style and how the Wiki software works.
- If/when you do decide to create a new article from scratch, the place to go is Articles for Creation, where you can write it as a draft, receive help on it and have it reviewed for publication when it's ready. First of all, you will need to work out whether the person it is about meets our various notability guidelines, which set out the rules for what can and can't have a page on this site.
- If the article's subject doesn't pass one of these criteria, it's likely to be nominated for deletion and removed. There are plenty of people who are doing great things and will have articles, but simply haven't yet received enough coverage in published sources for us to write an article about them. If the article's subject is a woman, the Women in Red project might be interested in helping out -- they do a lot of work creating new articles on previously-unrecognised women. Thank you today for Temple of Apollo Palatinus, "about what was, at least in its day, one of Rome's grandest temples. Built by the not-quite-yet emperor Augustus on the Palatine Hill, the temple played a major role in Rome's religious life and political ideology. It was, by turns, a senate-house, war memorial, public library and distribution centre for sulphur. The article has to wrestle with the deeply complicated issue of the join between ancient text and modern archaeology: the reconstruction of the complex around the temple is deeply controversial and its excavations have not been brilliantly documented." Request for a GA review
Hi, I came across your page from the Temple of Apollo Palatinus edit history and I must say, I am amazed at the level of edits you have made. Personally I've been very interested in Greek & Roman topics, archaeology in particular, but never had access to the required resources. Now when I've introduced myself, could I please request you to do a GA review for the article on Rajiv Malhotra which I nominated? I believe it is GA worthy, perhaps even FA worthy, with a great level of detail. It was rated C a long time ago, and many good edits have been made since then. If you don't have the time, that is understandable too. Thanks in advance. Matarisvan (talk) 16:12, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
- Hello -- thanks for your message and your kind words. - Hi, another user reviewed it a couple of days ago, there still remains work to be done. Help with a source
Hello again UC. Promised to keep L Truss's article up to date with new sources and a new one's come out (albeit two months ago). Per Amazon it seems to have generally good reviews but since it's by Ben Riley-Smith (writer at the Telegraph) worried it might be a bit one-sided and journo. Would like to hear your thoughts on this. Cheers, Tim O'Doherty (talk) 20:53, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
- To me, the "quality" of the source has to match what it's used to support. If R-S is a remotely respectable journalist, and he gives us e.g. the date of a certain meeting or some other fairly uncontroversial and pedestrian fact, I'd see no problem with using his work. It might be that he's notable enough in his own right to use as a source for views of Truss (his own, most obviously, but also potentially those of people he interviewed). However, the more extraordinary and controversial the claim, the more robust the evidence needs to be -- if he's purporting to have some explosive, closed-door testimony that nobody else ever heard, that is probably a bridge too far. UndercoverClassicist T·C 21:38, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
- Yep, Sagan standard and all that. BR-S seems decent enough. Obviously won't be deviating massively from the FA-reviewed version, but if there are some details which might be good, could pop them in citing the book. Thanks. Tim O'Doherty (talk) 21:45, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
- Read it. Bit underwhelming. Nothing much new. Thanks anyway. Best and happy new year — Tim O'Doherty (talk) 17:49, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
Hi there. I just uploaded some photos taken in Munich this past summer of plaster casts of Acropolis korai painted by Gilliéron père et fils. They were among the casts purchased from the Gilliérons by the Metropolitan Museum in New York (Conte mentions them briefly in Mertens and Conte 2019, p. 30), and when the Met decided to get rid of them they passed to the Museum für Abgüsse Klassischer Bildwerke, München, on more or less permanent loan. The paint is based on the watercolors and painted photographs that Gilliéron père made for Russell Sturgis and Edward Robinson in the 1880s, when the korai were fresh out of the ground. It occurred to me that you might find one or two of them useful as illustrations for the Gilliéron article, which I see you have nominated for GA. At the moment, all the images in the article are of Bronze Age stuff, mostly from Knossos, which is understandable, given the amount of restoration they did there and its lasting influence on the way the site is seen today. But it does create a somewhat unbalanced and one-sided view of their work. Anyway, if you're interested, you'll find them at c:Category:Painted casts of Acropolis korai by Émile Gilliéron and son. Happy New Year! - Choliamb (talk) 00:18, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
- Wonderful as always -- will certainly add them in. Thanks for the bibliography as well! Hope you're well and a happy new year to you when it comes. UndercoverClassicist T·C 12:00, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
- Re the dates of the casts: the website of the Cast Museum in Munich notwithstanding, I think these probably belong to the early years of the 20th century, not the end of the 19th. Mertens and Conte (p. 8) suggest that the Met only began acquiring stuff from the Gilliérons in 1906, and it's no coincidence that this was immediately after Edward Robinson, who had been dealing with Gilliéron since the 1880s, and was responsible for the polychromy exhibitions at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston in the 1890s, moved from Boston to the Met in 1905. Mertens and Conte (p. 30 with p. 46, note 7) also cite correspondence about the korai between Richter and the Gilliérons in 1911 and 1912. Presumably the Met has records that provide a precise date of acquisition for each of them, but I would frankly be astonished if they were before 1900, and without confirmed dates I think it's best to rely on the general chronology suggested by Mertens and Conte, since they have obviously been working in the archives. The Cast Museum in Munich has none of the original records for these pieces and the description on their web site is a much more general one; I don't think you should rely on it for close dating of any of the material it inherited from the Met. (Full disclosure: my wife has been working on Robinson and the nexus of artists involved in the study of Greek polychromy in the 1890s for several years now, and one of the main reasons we went to Munich last summer was so that she could get a look at this material.) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Choliamb (talk • contribs) 14:32, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
- I'm sure all that is correct -- purely from a Wiki point of view, I'm not sure if/how we can make use of it, though. We've got a source which is, at least in theory, reliable, secondary and all the rest of it: meanwhile, even if the Met acquired them in the 1900s, that doesn't contradict the Munich suggestion that they were made (presumably) in the late 1890s -- unless we are absolutely certain that they were made to order and that the 1911/1912 correspondence predates that manufacture. Certainly, the Gilliérons often worked to commission, but they also made reproductions independently and then tried to sell them.
- It's not a major problem for Commons, but I'm uncomfortable changing a cited fact in the article to an uncited one that contradicts what is currently our only source. Is there anything published (perhaps from Mrs. Choliamb?) that would allow us to use that later date by explicitly saying "these casts were probably made after 1900"? UndercoverClassicist T·C 15:10, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
- As far as I can see, you have two sources, not one, and you can choose which one to follow: Mertens and Conte, based on meticulous research in the Met archives, or the Munich cast museum web site, a general puff piece ("Die Gipsabgüsse einiger dieser Koren sind wahre Eyecatcher!") with no scholarly pretensions. Mertens and Conte clearly imply that the Met did not acquire these casts until the early 20th century, and the cast museum in Munich does not have access to independent information about them unavailable to the Met. But as you say, it's not impossible that the casts themselves were created in the 1890s and then sat around waiting to find a buyer (and of course the casts as physical objects have a different creation date from the painted decoration that was applied to them after manufacture, so someone who wanted to stir the pot might point out that there are three possible dates in play here, not just two). There's no way to know for sure without going into the Met archives, and since my wife is chiefly interested in the polychromy exhibitions of the 1890s and Robinson's time in Boston, the precise date of these particular casts is not something that she has been motivated to track down. I could ask our niece who works at the Met to try to do that for me, but even if I did, and she was successful, you still wouldn't be able to use the product of her original research in the WP article, and it still wouldn't address your point about a possible delay between creation and acquisition. Because of your reservatons, I have redated all of the Commons pages for these photos from "ca. 1900–1910" to "ca. 1890–1910" to leave the question a little more open, but I'm not prepared to go any further than that. As for the Wikipedia article, you'll just have do as seems best to you. Believe me when I say it does not matter a jot to me one way or the other, so if you prefer to stick with the late 19th century, I will not be offended (and in the larger scheme of things it won't make any difference to readers or change their understanding of Gilliéron's career). Cheers, Choliamb (talk) 16:27, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
- P.S. Thanks for introducing me to the {{PD-art-70-3d}} template, which I had no idea existed! Choliamb (talk) 16:33, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks -- I think that's where we're going to have to be, at least on Wikipedia, until someone actually puts the later date into print. On Commons, people seem to be much more relaxed about unsourced dates, authors, information and so on, so I can't see any problem with the solution you've adopted. As always, much appreciate your time and wisdom. UndercoverClassicist T·C 20:46, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
- It occurred to me while I was out walking the dog that your hands are also tied by the fact that you put the article up for GA, because even if you were more inclined to follow Mertens and Conte, you'd almost certainly be dinged for WP:SYNTH by the GA reviewer, since they don't explicitly mention these particular korai. So if you want to get it through review, I agree that you're probably stuck with the Munich web site, right or wrong. OK, I'll shut up now. Best wishes for 2024. Choliamb (talk) 21:27, 31 December 2023 (UTC)

- That's a good question; I don't think there is, unfortunately, but WP:HELPDESK might be able to assist. Of course, that list isn't intended as a set of tasks or a to-do list: mine has about 9,000 articles on it! UndercoverClassicist T·C 07:30, 19 January 2024 (UTC)
Question from Brainman69 (10:37, 19 January 2024)
Hey, I've got a page that needs to be published for a cricket player who holds a record for under 17's leading runs scorer in a premier competition that has hosted a long list of elite sports people --Brainman69 (talk) 10:37, 19 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hello -- is that this draft article? I notice you've already done the right thing and put it through AfC -- User:Timothytyy has provided what I would hope is a clear explanation of why we can't move the article into mainspace. Essentially, it's not clear from the references provided that this person meets the criteria required to publish an article on a cricketer: in general, this means having played internationally, or at the highest senior domestic level in a major cricketing nation. As I understand from what's in the article, Disisto hasn't yet done either of those things, so this seems to be a case where we have to wait until his career develops further to be able to write an article on him. That's no slight on him or the article itself: it's simply a matter of the criteria Wikipedia has for the articles it hosts. If he has done much more than the article suggests, we need to find and cite reliable sources that say so. UndercoverClassicist T·C 10:47, 20 January 2024 (UTC)
Your GA nomination of Henry Biard
The article Henry Biard you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Henry Biard for comments about the article, and Talk:Henry Biard/GA1 for the nomination. Well done! If the article has never appeared on the Main Page as a "Did you know" item, and has not appeared within the last year either as "Today's featured article", or as a bold link under "In the news" or in the "On this day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear at DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On this day" column do not affect DYK eligibility. Couple of things
A question: have you thought about participating in this year's WikiCup? A request: if you have the time, I would greatly appreciate your comments over at a peer review for Genghis Khan, which I hope to take to FAC in the near future; I know it's not really your period/area, but any comments would be welcome. ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 22:04, 22 January 2024 (UTC)
- Not really thought about WikiCup, to be honest: I expect I'd be eliminated fairly quickly! I've had a quick scan over Genghis Khan: looks like a very impressive piece of work. I'll give it a proper read before I give full comments -- just left one that popped out to me so that I don't forget about it later. UndercoverClassicist T·C 07:35, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks very much, I'll get to them ASAP. I think with your content work and your reviews, you'd have a very good chance of getting far in the competition—I mean, your GAs above would get you through to the next round already. Still, your choice. ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 20:33, 23 January 2024 (UTC)

Choregoi
While commenting chez the Beulé Gate, I found this verse by W. S. Gilbert from The Grand Duke buzzing round my mind:
We've a choir hyporchematic (that is, ballet-operatic)
Who respond to the choreutæ of that cultivated age,
And our clever chorus-master, all but captious criticaster
Would accept as the choregus of the early Attic stage.
This return to classic ages is considered in their wages,
Which are always calculated by the day or by the week –
And I'll pay 'em (if they'll back me) all in oboloi and drachmæ,
Which they'll get (if they prefer it) at the Kalends that are Greek!
Later in the song come a few lines rather closer to my heart:
As they gradually got on, they'd τρέπεσθαι πρὸς τὸν ποτον
(Which is Attic for a steady and a conscientious drink).
But they mixed their wine with water – which I'm sure they didn't oughter –
And we modern Saxons know a trick worth two of that, I think!
This information will be of no use to you whatever, but I send it anyway. Best wishes, Tim riley talk 10:18, 30 January 2024 (UTC)

Help out with a peer review?
Hi UC, as you suggested, I have put up the article Sam Manekshaw for peer review. I believe you are very busy at the moment but I would still request you to join the peer review if possible. Also, might I suggest that you try the OneClick archiver for archiving old sections on here which the bot hasn't? Thanks in advance, looking forward to your comments. Matarisvan (talk) 05:28, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hello -- thanks for this message, and good luck with the review. At the moment, I'd have relatively little to add what I've said at FAC: lots of improvements have been made, but I would be looking to see more comprehensiveness, particularly in the "Legacy" section. I'll be happy to join in the PR: it would probably be most useful for me to do so after others have chimed in, as they will see things that I haven't and the article will doubtless evolve and improve as a result. UndercoverClassicist T·C 10:44, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, @SchroCat and @Ian Rose have partaken in the PR and also pointed out the need to expand the Legacy section. Should I be getting opinions from more editors? Also looking forward to you joining in soon. Matarisvan (talk) 05:32, 1 February 2024 (UTC)

Question from Ludensg (04:41, 18 February 2024)
Hello! Having some trouble on reaching consensus on some edits on a page, see the discussion here: https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Talk:Raiden_(Metal_Gear)
I think the change should be reverse to my last revision, which has been undone, as I think it's relevant information given the context (its not original research). Also, not including this would result in more vandalism on the page, whih has been strong the past couple of weeks. What do you think? --Ludensg (talk) 04:41, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
- If no consensus can be reached on the talk page, there are a few options. If only two editors are involved, you might try a WP:THIRDOPINION, which is a means of getting an uninvolved editor to take a look and give a view: it might be possible for both of you currently involved to agree to defer to whatever they decide. Alternatively, there is a formal process to seek wider consensus, which again may or may not be useful.
- Ultimately and sometimes frustratingly, there is no way of calling in an authoritative judgement on a matter of content: in general, editors are reasonably people and consensus can be reached (even if that means ending up on a solution that nobody is totally happy with, but everyone can live with), but it is sometimes the case that it cannot, and here sometimes the only thing to do is find another article. I don't mean that to sound pessimistic, but simply to help you set expectations. 17:46, 18 February 2024 (UTC) UndercoverClassicist T·C 17:46, 18 February 2024 (UTC)

Hello UC. I noticed the math on Steve Winwood's age was incorrect. Born in 1948 he'd be 73 until May when he (God willing) will turn 74.
Only noticed this bc my wife's birth year is also 1948. Any husband knows - get the age correct (or err to the *lower.* ha ha) or you WILL pay for it! LMBO.
Hope this helps. If *you* would, please make the correction/edit. Thanks. Terry --Terry themusiclover (talk) 19:57, 7 March 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Terry,
- I'm not sure I see the mistake here. I see the DoB given as 12 May 1948 and the age as 75. That's correct, by my count: his last birthday was in 2023, and 2023-1948 is 75. He'll be 76 in May, assuming all of those dates are right? UndercoverClassicist T·C 20:02, 7 March 2024 (UTC)

- Interesting stuff -- you've certainly gone to the key source (Liddell and Scott) that I would have. What you write sounds eminently plausible. I did find page 97 of this one, which pushes the "popular idea" back a bit: the Greeks (or at least Strabo) also thought there was a connection between arrows and the river Tigris, and the Romans (or at least Varro) thought that extended to the animal as well. RFA2024 update: no longer accepting new proposals in phase I
Hey there! This is to let you know that phase I of the 2024 requests for adminship (RfA) review is now no longer accepting new proposals. Lots of proposals remain open for discussion, and the current round of review looks to be on a good track towards making significant progress towards improving RfA's structure and environment. I'd like to give my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has given us their idea for change to make RfA better, and the same to everyone who has given the necessary feedback to improve those ideas. The following proposals remain open for discussion:
- Proposal 2, initiated by HouseBlaster, provides for the addition of a text box at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship reminding all editors of our policies and enforcement mechanisms around decorum.
- Proposals 3 and 3b, initiated by Barkeep49 and Usedtobecool, respectively, provide for trials of discussion-only periods at RfA. The first would add three extra discussion-only days to the beginning, while the second would convert the first two days to discussion-only.
- Proposal 5, initiated by SilkTork, provides for a trial of RfAs without threaded discussion in the voting sections.
- Proposals 6c and 6d, initiated by BilledMammal, provide for allowing users to be selected as provisional admins for a limited time through various concrete selection criteria and smaller-scale vetting.
- Proposal 7, initiated by Lee Vilenski, provides for the "General discussion" section being broken up with section headings.
- Proposal 9b, initiated by Reaper Eternal, provides for the requirement that allegations of policy violation be substantiated with appropriate links to where the alleged misconduct occured.
- Proposals 12c, 21, and 21b, initiated by City of Silver, Ritchie333, and HouseBlaster, respectively, provide for reducing the discretionary zone, which currently extends from 65% to 75%. The first would reduce it 65%–70%, the second would reduce it to 50%–66%, and the third would reduce it to 60%–70%.
- Proposal 13, initiated by Novem Lingaue, provides for periodic, privately balloted admin elections.
- Proposal 14, initiated by Kusma, provides for the creation of some minimum suffrage requirements to cast a vote.
- Proposals 16 and 16c, initiated by Thebiguglyalien and Soni, respectively, provide for community-based admin desysop procedures. 16 would desysop where consensus is established in favor at the administrators' noticeboard; 16c would allow a petition to force reconfirmation.
- Proposal 16e, initiated by BilledMammal, would extend the recall procedures of 16 to bureaucrats.
- Proposal 17, initiated by SchroCat, provides for "on-call" admins and 'crats to monitor RfAs for decorum.
- Proposal 18, initiated by theleekycauldron, provides for lowering the RfB target from 85% to 75%.

Question from Movies09 (19:24, 15 March 2024)
How can I easily add a source to an article? I just added one to the Mark Chapman Wikipedia page and I got it right on like my 4th/5th try --Movies09 (talk) 19:24, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
- Hello - the easiest way is normally to go into source editing mode and add ref tags: write
<ref>YOUR CITATION HERE</ref>
, replacing the middle bit with information about the source. There are some more creative things you can do later on, but that should work: most articles are fairly unfussy about the format as long as it's obvious where you got it from, and another editor could go and check that reference with the information you've provided. The secretum...
...is back! This time at FAC; if you have either time or inclination to pop in, it would be most welcome. I went through your PR comments after closing it down a month or so ago, and hope I have done them justice. The only area where I drew a blank was in going through Vout's works. All are fascinating in their own right, but while she refers to the collections of Witt, Townley, et al, there is nothing about the Secretum which I can work in, unfortunately. Arab–Khazar wars
Hi! I intend to bring the article on the Arab–Khazar wars back for a second run at FAC soon. Since you made a most comprehensive review in the first run, can you check whether your concerns, as stated there have been addressed? Regarding the Silk Road specifically, I admit I am baffled; as you say, not my field, but though there is much debate going on on when it started and what its exact nature was, I have not encountered skepticism of the Silk Road as such. Can you point me to some literature? Thanks! Constantine ✍ 12:30, 6 April 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Constantine -- I'll try to give it a look when I can. Regarding the Silk Road, the issue is less whether silk and other goods were traded between Europe/Persia/China (they certainly where) and more whether a single, centrally-planned "Silk Road" is the best way to conceptualise this trade, as distinct from a series of smaller and more ad hoc connections between people(s), including connections by sea. This edited volume looks at the topic in detail; the British Museum opt for the plural here, as do UNESCO here. This JSTOR article goes into good detail as to why the plural is useful, and offers the routes across the steppe as a case study. UndercoverClassicist T·C 08:50, 21 April 2024 (UTC)
- Looking at the lead, I noticed that where the Khazars were already established since the late 6th century.: were ... since isn't quite grammatical in English: had been ... since is better. Otherwise, I'm sure I'll be able to find some nits to pick at FAC -- it is after all a huge article, and testament to your hard work and patience -- but it's clearly in good shape. Review comment query
Dear UndercoverClassicist, I happened to notice, while scrolling the "History" section of the list of Good Article nominations, that you have undertaken to review the article on King George II, for which "additional comments are welcome". I would like to offer such a comment, for what it's worth, but I am not sure where I should write it and I thought I should ask your help in this matter. Should I add my comment in the "Discussion" section or am I supposed to create a new section in the review page? Thanks in advance for your response, Ashmedai 119 (talk) 19:11, 22 April 2024 (UTC)
- Hello -- up to you: if you only have one or two comments, or want to join in with a conversation that's already started, you might wish to just directly add what you have to say to what's already there. On the other hand, if you have a substantial amount to say, it would be best to start a new subsection, titled after your username, and to put them there.
