Karna Article

HI, need your help. I linked the references to the public domain English translation of the Mahabharata by Krishna Mohan Ganguly which is available online and crossed referenced with other translations to verify the information. Is it a unreliable source? Please let me know why. As for links being dead, I'll try to remedy that. Maglorbd (talk) 05:10, 25 April 2014 (UTC)

Hi, Thanks pointing out the errors. I have added a reference in "Karna's Family section against Vrishaketu. Please let me know if you can access that site - it contains a translation of the Mahabharata. I will correct the other references accordingly.Maglorbd (talk) 10:19, 25 April 2014 (UTC)

HI, I was just adding reference available in this site: http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m08/m08075.htm. Which gives an English translation of the Mahabharata, not trying to interpret them. There is a note saying the article needed citation.Maglorbd (talk) 09:46, 26 April 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the tip - does this mean all links to raw Mahabharata should be removed? And there are lots of scholarly works - but they also quote either raw Mahabharata or the Puranas or Harivansha as their sourse - will that be alright?59.152.99.3 (talk) 14:10, 26 April 2014 (UTC)

Request for Opinion/Suggestions on Bengali Kayastha Dispute

Hello TitoDutta

The last best version of the article on Bengali Kayastha, which has been informally reviewed by several senior editors/reviewers, has recently been a subject matter of debate. Though all the statements mentioned in the last best version are reliably sourced, and in fact reviewed and edited by Sitush himself long time back, now all of a sudden he refuses to accept. Anyway, the good part is that at least we are engaged in talk page discussions. If you are interested about the topic, I would like to request you to suggest or let us know your valuable opinion as a senior editor. Thanks. Ekdalian (talk) 10:10, 27 April 2014 (UTC)

Motto of the Day Help Request April 2014

Motto of the Day (WP:MOTD) is in a state of emergency and really needs your help! There are not enough editors who are reviewing or nominating mottos at Wikipedia:Motto of the day/Nominations/In review, and this probably means that you will notice a red link or “This space for rent” as our mottos for the next weeks and months.

Please take a moment to review the nominations and nominate your own new mottos at Wikipedia:Motto of the day/Nominations/In review and Wikipedia:Motto of the day/Nominations/'Specials. Any help would be appreciated! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 09:13, 29 April 2014 (UTC)

This message has been sent by pjoef on behalf of Motto of the Day to all editors of the English Wikipedia who are showing MOTD's templates on their pages, and to all the participants to MOTD: (page, template, and category).

Need advice

Need your advise. Are these a relevant starting point? Google Scholar that is acceptable? Google Books has some books on Karna like this one: this work. Also, if the raw Mahabharata has a comment like "Karna's brother" or "Karna's son Satyasen" in one chapter - would using that as reference be misinterpreted?Maglorbd (talk) 15:17, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

DASHBOARD

Gerson Chicareli
1When the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of Yahweh, she came to prove him with hard questions. 2She came to Jerusalem with a very great train, with camels that bore spices, and very much gold, and precious stones; and when she was come to Solomon, she talked with him of all that was in her heart. 3Solomon told her all her questions: there was not anything hidden from the king which he didn't tell her. 4When the queen of Sheba had seen all the wisdom of Solomon, and the house that he had built, 5and the food of his table, and the sitting of his servants, and the attendance of his ministers, and their clothing, and his cup bearers, and his ascent by which he went up to the house of Yahweh; there was no more spirit in her. 6She said to the king, "It was a true report that I heard in my own land of your acts, and of your wisdom. 7However I didn't believe the words, until I came, and my eyes had seen it. Behold, the half was not told me! Your wisdom and prosperity exceed the fame which I heard. 8Happy are your men, happy are these your servants, who stand continually before you, who hear your wisdom. 9Blessed is Yahweh your God, who delighted in you, to set you on the throne of Israel. Because Yahweh loved Israel forever, therefore made he you king, to do justice and righteousness." 10She gave the king one hundred twenty talents of gold, and of spices very great store, and precious stones. There came no more such abundance of spices as these which the queen of Sheba gave to king Solomon.

11The navy also of Hiram, that brought gold from Ophir, brought in from Ophir great plenty of almug trees and precious stones. 12The king made of the almug trees pillars for the house of Yahweh, and for the king's house, harps also and stringed instruments for the singers: there came no such almug trees, nor were seen, to this day.

13King Solomon gave to the queen of Sheba all her desire, whatever she asked, besides that which Solomon gave her of his royal bounty. So she turned, and went to her own land, she and her servants.

Solomon's Riches

(2 Chronicles 1:14-17)

14Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was six hundred sixty-six talents of gold, 15besides [that which] the traders [brought], and the traffic of the merchants, and of all the kings of the mixed people, and of the governors of the country. 16King Solomon made two hundred bucklers of beaten gold; six hundred [shekels] of gold went to one buckler. 17[he made] three hundred shields of beaten gold; three minas of gold went to one shield: and the king put them in the house of the forest of Lebanon. 18Moreover the king made a great throne of ivory, and overlaid it with the finest gold. 19There were six steps to the throne, and the top of the throne was round behind; and there were stays on either side by the place of the seat, and two lions standing beside the stays. 20Twelve lions stood there on the one side and on the other on the six steps: there was nothing like it made in any kingdom. 21All king Solomon's drinking vessels were of gold, and all the vessels of the house of the forest of Lebanon were of pure gold: none were of silver; it was nothing accounted of in the days of Solomon. 22For the king had at sea a navy of Tarshish with the navy of Hiram: once every three years came the navy of Tarshish, bringing gold, and silver, ivory, and apes, and peacocks.

23So king Solomon exceeded all the kings of the earth in riches and in wisdom. 24All the earth sought the presence of Solomon, to hear his wisdom, which God had put in his heart. 25They brought every man his tribute, vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and clothing, and armor, and spices, horses, and mules, a rate year by year.

26Solomon gathered together chariots and horsemen: and he had a thousand and four hundred chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen, that he bestowed in the chariot cities, and with the king at Jerusalem. 27The king made silver to be in Jerusalem as stones, and cedars made he to be as the sycamore trees that are in the lowland, for abundance. 28The horses which Solomon had were brought out of Egypt; and the king's merchants received them in droves, each drove at a price. 29A chariot came up and went out of Egypt for six hundred [shekels] of silver, and a horse for one hundred fifty; and so for all the kings of the Hittites, and for the kings of Syria, did they bring them out by their means.

RefScript

Wow, thank you very much for promoting that script! It's a shame there is no such script in use at the moment, it would save thousands of hours wasted for writing references and external links. I will add 5 or 10 more websites and update the script starting with right now and I will update it. Can you suggest some newspaper websites to add to the script that would make it more attractive? I should add some frequently quoted newspapers but I'm not sure which ones are those. —  Ark25  (talk) 14:31, 9 May 2014 (UTC)

  • There are many. Only in WP India's English newspapers, we need these articles click on show/hide newspapers. I was testing the script today morning, it is working fine in more or less in every page I tried. Here are some tests.

In the example 2 above, the newspaper was detected as "Telegraphindia.com", it is fine. TitoDutta 18:54, 9 May 2014 (UTC)

Well, it's supposed to work with any ".com", ".org" or ".net" web site, but it doesn't detect the publication date and author name. In order to work best with a website, I have to "teach" the program (add code) so it knows how to detect author and publication date in that website. I updated the script and it now it knows how to handle The Times of India.

<ref name="The_Times_of_India_2014-05-10c">{{cite web |url=http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/home/lok-sabha-elections-2014/news/Election-war-rooms-now-target-Wikipedia/articleshow/33841408.cms |title=Election war-rooms now target Wikipedia |newspaper=The Times of India |date= April 17, 2014 |last=Jayanta Deka |accessdate=May 10, 2014}}</ref>

now the title doesn't contain the string " - The Times of India" and the name of the newspaper is changed from "Timesofindia.indiatimes.com" into "The Times of India". And it has the author and the publication date. I noticed many editors are very scrupulous with those details.

You can change how the script generates the publication and access date in UK or US or YYYY-MM-DD format by changing the line var Date_Format = "US";

Here it's the same reference, with UK-style date:

<ref name="The_Times_of_India_2014-05-10c">{{cite web |url=http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/home/lok-sabha-elections-2014/news/Election-war-rooms-now-target-Wikipedia/articleshow/33841408.cms |title=Election war-rooms now target Wikipedia |newspaper=The Times of India |date= 17 April 2014 |last=Jayanta Deka |accessdate=10 May 2014}}</ref>

I will try to do the drag-and drop thing too in the next few days. —  Ark25  (talk) 17:10, 10 May 2014 (UTC)

Bengali Kayastha

Please discuss if you have any issues with the lead section. The statement is reliably sourced, that too citing two reliable sources. The main concern of Sitush was copyright vio, which has been taken care of. Please go through the references at least. As a senior editor, you can understand, we cannot keep the lead section blank for ever. Even Sitush has never questioned the reliability of Andre Wink or Tej Ram Sharma. I have always maintained that all editors (especially seniors like you) are always welcome to suggest constructive improvements. Regards. Ekdalian (talk) 12:56, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
