Nice to see the enthusiasm!! Be patient just a little while longer. I had them look at the pages associated with the project last night and will have them create userpages tonight. Thelmadatter 13:16, 4 September 2007 (UTC)Thelmadatter[reply]
Oh cool, so we should expect them within the next week or so? J-stan TalkContribs 14:34, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I expect you should start seeing them within the week. Watch this discussion page and the Nav Bar, as soon as they notify me of the existence of their userpages, it will be in both places. You dont have to wait for them to come to you if you want to get started. Next week they have to give presentations on aspects of Wikipedia to help oriente themselves and the rest of the class.Thelmadatter 14:38, 4 September 2007 (UTC)Thelmadatter[reply]

Problem with student accounts

[edit]
Whoa, whoa, are you all different people working on the same account? That can be considered a compromised account and you can be blocked under that name. If you are all User:Appleteam, consider creating separate accounts. But anyway, Welcome! J-stan TalkContribs 18:56, 5 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
for the purposes of the class I want students to work in groups under the same username. See nav bar. They will be working in groups as they contribute to Wikipedia... it is better if they speak with "one voice" instead of communicating separately with mentors and other wikipedians... less chaos. I hope this can be acceptable.Thelmadatter 19:08, 5 September 2007 (UTC)Thelmadatter[reply]
I looked at the blocking policy and if I understand it correctly, this should not be a violation unless there is disruption. I dont see how this will be disruptive. Thelmadatter 19:22, 5 September 2007 (UTC)Thelmadatter[reply]
I don't see how separate usernames could create "chaos", just have each mentor create a subpage on their user page for each group to watch, and that way, it all stays organized. It might not be disruptive, but I know there's something against compromised accounts. J-stan TalkContribs 19:32, 5 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've found it. This policy states specifically that "you are not allowed to share your account or password with others." I'm sorry, but the group accounts have to go. J-stan TalkContribs 20:02, 5 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Who do I ask for some kind of special exception? I am too far along into this project to have this kind of problem. I want them to have an account so that they learn to integrate into the Wikipedian community but I dont want mentors writing the same thing on 4 different userpages. or getting the same question from 4 people. I also dont want to be monitoring about 60 individual pages and trying piece together how the group interacted with their mentors and each other. I discussed this with Richard some time back on this or the school project page.Thelmadatter 20:11, 5 September 2007 (UTC)Thelmadatter[reply]
That's where my suggestion comes in. Lot's of administrator coaches create a "coaching" subpage. Each mentor could have a subpage, and their group could discuss things on that page. You would only have to watch about 5, depending on your number of students. J-stan TalkContribs 20:21, 5 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have over 40 people who have volunteered to mentor, enough to have multiple mentors for each group. Not having their own page IMHO takes away from the Wikipedia experience. If I cant get around the ban against group pages, maybe I can have subpages on my username for each group. But really, it would be better to have some kind of exception to policy in this case.Thelmadatter 20:27, 5 September 2007 (UTC)Thelmadatter[reply]
Also, of course, you could create a "Class" page of your own in userspace, like User:Thelmadatter/Students, which might have the various individual student user pages linked to it, maybe even indicating the individual student's specialty. That might be a way of "centralizing" the students. You might also ask each student who has created their own userpage to make their individual user talk pages redirects to a "group" talk page. I think wikipedia policy would permit an individual user to turn their individual talk page into a redirect to another, multi-user, talk page. Also, I've contacted the presumptive founder of the Wikipedia:WikiProject Classroom coordination, and hope that that party might be contacting you as the opportunity permits. With any luck, she'll have a better idea of what is possible here. John Carter 20:31, 5 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It is my understanding of the GFDL that having multiple people editing under one username violates the GFDL as each author's contributions should be attributed to that individual. Other's with a better understanding of the GFDL may want to step in this discussion. Granted, I have not investigated what exactly you are doing here, but if you are wanting each team to have one ID and then edit the same userpage, you could have all students create an ID and then assign a team leader and have all members of that team edit on that person's talk page.↔NMajdantalk 20:37, 5 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think that giving each user their own userspace, and then have a separate mentoring page (in your userspace, or each mentor's userspace) for each group is a great idea. Giving each student their own userspace certainly adds to the wikipedia experience, it doesn't take away from it. J-stan TalkContribs 20:41, 5 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, we cannot make an exception since allowing multiple editors to edit under one acct violates WP:U and WP:GFDL, just to name a few. However, we can try to come up with a solution that allows your students to continue with their project on Wikipedia. Again, you can have all your students create individual accounts and then assign them to edit only one user's talk page. Or you can create subpages on your username (such as User:Thelmadatter/Group1, User:Thelmadatter/Group2, etc) and have them edit that. Each individuals edits must be attributable to that user's ID, and that is impossible when multiple editors use one ID.↔NMajdantalk 20:53, 5 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Here is a possible solution. I created a subpage of the Project Page Wikipedia:School_and_university_projects/ITESM_Campus_Toluca/Appleteam and the students can put there usernames (when they all have them) on this page. They communicate with mentors and others about their school-related projects here and here only. On their personal pages, they can do whatever they like, but I will not be checking them. Is that acceptable?Thelmadatter 22:42, 5 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, that sounds good. You should create pages like this for each group. Would you like me to mentor Appleteam?
Also, what are you going to do about User:Appleteam?J-stan TalkContribs 22:44, 5 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
you can go to Appleteams page and volunteer but give me a little time to get students settled. This is going to complicate things immensely for them and Wikipedia is not the most intuitive site to get around in. Ill let you know about the already-establish userpages as soon as I talk to my students. Thelmadatter 22:49, 5 September 2007 (UTC)Thelmadatter[reply]
I established group pages for Appleteam, ZYANYA06 and Copitas atAppleteam,ZYANYA06,Copitas and I left messages for them at the userpages I created. Its going to be messy but hopefully I can get all the group pages up quickly.Thelmadatter 23:13, 5 September 2007 (UTC)Thelmadatter[reply]
OK. By the way, you don't have to type your username after the four swing-dashes. J-stan TalkContribs 02:57, 6 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I received a request to take a look at this situation and I have to agree: because of GDFL copyright licensing issues it's beyond the power of individual editors - or even administrators - to approve role accounts. You might try e-mailing the Wikimedia Foundation, but really it's better to have the individual students register individual accounts. You could still keep things fairly straightforward by assigning sequential usernames, such as...

I hope that solves your dilemma. Feel free to contact me at my user talk if you have further questions. Best regards, and thanks for incorporating Wikipedia into your class. DurovaCharge! 02:44, 6 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Mentors

[edit]

Hello. I am one of the mentors with my name on your list of mentors. I was wondering whether you would be assigning your students to us, or whether you would rather we just simply help out. Essentially, I am trying to ask the following: will they be coming to us, or should we be going to them? --דניאל - Dantheman531 02:30, 10 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Either way... in the end, it is the students' responsibility to make sure that they have the help they they need; however, if mentors approach them, Im sure it will be appreciated. I have told them to work on their group pages, so that in case any of you guys want to take the initiative, you have some idea who you are contacting. I thought about assigning mentors, but decided against it because I felt it would take away some from the "wikipedia experience" and I didnt want students coming to me to fix their problems if a mentor disappeared. Thelmadatter 13:36, 10 September 2007 (UTC)Thelmadatter[reply]
What do you mean "Wikipedia experience"? You've used that before, and as a new user, what does the "wikipedia experience" mean to you? J-ſtan TalkContribs 14:08, 10 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have described Wikipedia as a "culture" and a "society". Like becoming part of any society, one must experience the disorientation of learning how to function within that culture. That includes culture clash (where values collide, as they did with the discussion about group user pages) and culture shock (the feeling of disorientation as you are trying to learn a complete set of rules). As their teacher, I am required to guide them through the experience but I cannot and should not explain everything to them. I doubt too many Wikipedians learned how to contribute to this by having someone over their shoulder, explaining every question they had to them in person. One of the priniple goals of this course is to show how communicating effectively in a foreign language requires more than knowing grammar, vocabulary etc. It requires learning how, when, where, what and whom to communicate ... all of these are based on the society/culture at hand. While most people never get to travel to a country where the target language is spoken, the Internet provides opportunties to integrate oneself in outside communities. And Wikipedia is a community. Hope this clarifies. Thelmadatter 14:20, 10 September 2007 (UTC)Thelmadatter[reply]
I guess that clarifies. I also think it would be a help to the mentors if the groups were more active. J-ſtan TalkContribs 14:31, 10 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes it would. Unfortunately, many students do not jump the gun as fast as we would like. Many students wait until deadlines are looming before doing what they need. I have set some intermediate deadlines and warned them that one way to show repect to you guys is to start responding. And lets face it... Wikipedia is a bit daunting! 100 WORDS ASSIGNMENT FROM THE _ PANCAKES

[edit]

These were the topics that we think are the most important. -USERBOXES -MUNICIPALITIES AS A TOPIC And this is why: As we read in the comments, we like the idea of using Mexican municipalities as a topic . For example we would talk about some place we have visited. As Cancùn, Acapulco or maybe Toluca. But we don´t want to only put information like location, weather, etc. But also to put our experiences in that place, and why people from all over the world should visit that place.

As we read in the discussion we don`t think that infoboxes should be necessary. Maybe because it would take a lot of time doing them. And we may not be focusing on what we are writting. It is important to read these comments because they may help us in doing our project. Userpage Userpage

Perhaps a small city, or perhaps a monument or attraction within a city? Or maybe something from history. For instance, we have an article on Tenochtitlan, and on Cancun, but we do not have an article on Ruinas del Rey or El Meco or Punta Sam.
Please be careful about writing about your own experiences. Wikipedia has a policy against original research and we ask that facts be backed up by citations as much as possible. In practice some of our articles fall short of having references, but all of our Wikipedia:Featured articles and Wikipedia:Good articles have references.
How does referencing work in practice? As an example, let's say you know a fact, like "____ is a popular hotel nearby and they offer daily tours of this site". Instead of just writing that in, you would first find some other website or magazine or other source that also says this. Then you would site that source.
Your mentors can help you with formatting the references.
Good luck with whatever you choose! Johntex\talk 00:41, 12 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Firstly, what we read in your user page was mainly about the main reason why you decided to use Wikipedia as the focus and goal of the course. The way how using an internet resource such as Wikipedia will help us in order to learn more about foreign people and their countries. To put in practice the topics discussed in class such as cultural adaptation. Understand that submitting an article in Wikipedia entail a great responsibility as it will be read by many people. Secondly, in your discussion page are just talks you have with other users. Most outstanding discussions are about on how they are concerned of our projects and the way they could help us.

In your main page, we can see the reason why, you want us to made this project. It is important to know about vocabulary and grammar, but we should be able to interact with native english speakers. Using wikipedia would let us understand and interact with the "real world". Reading your user page let us understand better the things that we are going to learn. This project will made us confront a different enviroment. Wikipedia its not an easy thing and we have to learn somethings by ourselves. The discussion let us see different points of view. Mentors, who have years working on Wikipedia discuss things that they think are right. It is also important to read their opinions and create one of our own. Mentors and people everywhere can participate of this project. It would be really helpful and we will learn alot. In your user page you explain us why it is important to write an article in Wikipedia. As you´ve said, not only will it help us to improve our english knowledge, but also to learn more about other cultures. Indeed, people from other countries will learn more about Mexico. That´s why in your discussion page you mention that it is important that we write about issues from our country. You also mentioned that what will help us to improve our english is the project of editing an article or the translating one, and finally to write or own. In your discussion page we can see that mentors also like the idea of this project. They are making a great effort to help use to write very interesting and helpful things. We liked a lot your main page because finally we understood perfectly how Wikipedia will help us. As you said "The only way to learn to write and to learn how to interact in a "foreign" environment is to do it", this is true and we believe that it doesn´t matter how much grammar and vocabulary you know, it is important to know how to interact with foreign people in different ways. What you mention about helping each other and don´t divide the word is a good way to develop teamwork. Mentors interested in our wikiproject and interested in being our mentors. We also saw some help requests related with the wikiproject. We found the whole wikipedia project interesting because it’s not a common assignment and we had never been part of something like this. We also find it kinda difficult because we’re not used to contributing in such a large encyclopedia as wikipedia is. The fact that there are many mentors to help us in whatever we need is cool and helpful. It makes us feel safe and somehow also more encouraged to do a good job. Event though user boxes are fun, they use way too much space. We read the article about Mexican music and we laughed out loud. We hope we don't offend anyone with this but it's just that most of the information is inaccurate. At some point we'd like to contribute with some improvements for it. Finally, we’d like to write an article about Mexican food (pozole, mole, tacos, enchiladas, tamales, etc) because we're fond of mexican cuisine! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 132.254.136.231 (talk) 18:31, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The discussion board is definitely a source designed to provide us help. We can find there instructions to make our Wikipedia article the best as possible. Some of them are related with info-boxes, whose purpose is to support ideas and explain them by giving examples. Info-boxes are not necessarily indispensable for assignments, but certainly, they had become a way for “synthesizing” information. Mentors are one of the most important subjects in the reading. These people offer their help to students and consequently, they will answer questions, clarify doubts and will try to be in touch whenever someone needs it. They had also reorganized pages to avoid any confusion and divided them in some useful categories. It was funny when they began to talk about the teacher’s name. Maybe mentors were trying to figure out where her last name came from. We laugh when they guessed about its origin. Sharing an account became such a problem, but finally a great solution was given. We think this is the best way to be assist with any hesitation. In conclusion, the group can truly affirm that this project will be a marvelous improvement for our second language. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Crisp26 (talkcontribs) 21:15, 11 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think this is a project that won't just help us with comunication in English. Personally, since I am not from México, I feel it will help me adjust to this new environment, this culture I'm trying to be a part of. The teacher is right when she says speaking a foreing language is not just learning grammar and vocabulary, it is also learning how to adapt to the different situations that we will experience. I find it impressive how eassy is comunicating between Wikipedians, and how they help each other in order to become a trustable community. We also appreciate a lot the fact that people who doesn't even know us, it is going to help us with our projects this semester. In the discussion page, there are a lot of topics. In this page you can make all the comments you want about the articles, the way they are written, if they are missing something or stuff like that. Finally i think this project was a great idea, it becomes a big part of our prepartion for all the things we will be doing in a near future. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Alejandrajustiniano05 (talkcontribs) 02:33, 21 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I like it. If you are interested, I managed to get on to Wikipedia in February and now have 4 featured articles including one on the main page today. For bonus points on their projects, I'd like to see your students see if they can get an article to Featured Article status. It would really be a crowning achievement for them...but that's just my two cents...aw crap, that's an idiom...how about "that's what I think; take it for what it's worth." — BQZip01 — talk 22:38, 11 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

that would be wonderful! I suggest that you look at the group pages (on the navigation bar on my user page) and see which group or groups you would like to work with and watch their page(s). This is kinda off to a slow start as students are a bit disoriented in this environment. They dont have to start writing actual contributions until Oct. Groups and Mentors table

[edit]

I have created a table of Groups, Students and Mentors at Wikipedia:School and university projects/ITESM Campus Toluca/Groups. I think this table would be useful to help determine who is in each group and who is mentoring that group. I got the table started and started filling it out. Then I thought that this would be a useful exercise for each group. All they need to do is put their names in the appropriate box in the Students column and the name of their mentor in the Mentor column. If they can do this with wikilinks, that's even better.

Another advantage to having them do this is that they can learn the power of transclusion. Note that, even though Wikipedia:School and university projects/ITESM Campus Toluca/Groups is in Wikipedia space and not Template space, it can still be transcluded just like a template. Your students can notice that any change to Wikipedia:School and university projects/ITESM Campus Toluca/Groups is reflected in both Wikipedia:School and university projects/ITESM Campus Toluca/Students and Wikipedia:School and university projects/ITESM Campus Toluca/Mentors.

If you don't want to use up limited instruction and assignment time having the students fill it out, I can finish the table myself. It just takes time and I figured the students would benefit more from the experience than I would.

--Richard 16:55, 12 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I see the table appears in the Wikipedia:School and university projects/ITESM Campus Toluca/Students. I think that is a better place for it instead of creating yet another new project page. Plus that page is already in the Nav Bar. I will instruct students to fill in as best they can. They are doing presentations about Wikipedia this week and we seem to have about 15 min each day to work on stuff. Templates mentor

[edit]

Would you like me to take one of your more advanced groups and teach them how to create basic templates, or not? themcman1 talk 17:23, 14 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If I can butt in here... we have to be mindful that this is not a course in Wikipedia but rather a course in English that happens to use Wikipedia as a teaching tool. If there are students that want to learn how to use templates, that's great but otherwise the focus should be on writing articles and interacting with mentors rather than on technical details of how to use Wikipedia.
--Richard 17:28, 14 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have to agree. If you get specific requests to do so, fine but creation of templates or images or infoboxes does not count towards their grade for contributing to Wikipedia. Any conversing you due this month with them about creating such counts towards their "networking" assignment... as long as it is all done in English, of course. Reading this discussion page has been very interesting. Interaction is very important in wikipedia so we have to adapt to this system. An interesting thing that we saw is how easy mistakes are corrected by other people who only wants to help you. Here we have to deal with foreing people and accept to be corrected or trashed but it is only to help us and nothing else (we hope). The discussion page is a source designed to write all your doubts and questions about Wikipedia, in order to be answered. The main topics were about the info-boxes to provide a synthesis of the information. Also about the people requesting to become a mentor to help us in our projects. Finally we think that the Wikipedia project will improve our english.Christian Panchana 02:02, 15 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

According with the user page, we are going to have a new experience as writers and also as wikipedians. For this project we have to have an open mind, because we are going to interact with people from different culture. A good thing of Wikipedia is that we have mistakes somebody can correct them. Also this project will improve our skills as writers. In the short time that we have in Wikipedia we have found some people that is very helpful. comment added by Diego Callejas (talkcontribs) 00:50, 15 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Idea

[edit]

I noted a lot of your students have expressed a wide variety of interests: food, beer, etc. Although it is kind of out of date (I'm working on updating it right now), they might find it useful to refer to the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory to see if there are any extant projects which deal with their given subjects, and maybe contact them when they start work on related articles. Just an idea. John Carter 19:08, 16 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: changing name of article

[edit]

Done. See Help:Moving a page; "click on the "Move" tab near the top of the page". --Geniac 14:56, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Be sure to let your students know that moving a page is easy, maybe too easy. Moving a page can be contentious. If the name change is purely about spelling, it's less of a problem although sometimes even the spelling of a name can be the subject of heated and, unfortunatedly, even vitriolic debate.
Anyone can move a page but anyone else can move it back and sometimes this leads to "move wars". Unless a move is clearly uncontroversial, it's a good idea to ask on the Talk Page first and then wait a few days to see if anyone objects. This is a rule of thumb that I often violate but I also get slapped around every so often when I get too bold. Help your students avoid this unpleasantness. Advise them to use this feature carefully. --Richard 16:24, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi teacher, I'm from the MexicoJapan group. I'm finding your page and this project quite great, this will improve our english so much. I've seen some of your articles (ex:machaca) I've been thinking that for my project I can improve some of your articles about our culture. Also I think your user page is very well distributed for us the students, so we found very easy to read the articles and in our team we found that the response of the mentors is incredible. We never thought we had such an amazing response to this project. We are currently reading the article a mentor gave us to iniciate our wikipedia project. I hope our contribitions will make a better user page and improve the wikipedia community. (MasamiS 18:08, 19 September 2007 (UTC))[reply]

A Round Tuit.

Thelmadatter, I see this was mentioned above (#Formatting tweaks, 5P)... were you going to need the Syllabus page printed out? If so, it makes sense to leave all those links and hard external links. Otherwise, do you agree it would look better with wikilinks? One other question I had was this: I noticed a few of the groups are... well... really quiet and haven't edited much yet. Is that a cause for concern, or are they not expected to have done much yet? --Geniac 14:10, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes...wikilinks would be much better ... gosh darn it, I just never get that "roundtuit" thingy I need to fix that little problem. No editing yet, That will start the first week of October. This "partial" was just first creating a presence in Wikipedia and brainstorming ideas for the contributions of the third partial (~October) and 4th partial/final project (first 2 weeks in November. I know this is slower most Wikipedians operate but students are doing other projects and assignments as well and this allows for time for mixups and problems--- which we have had!Thelmadatter 16:17, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Good point and I understand the need for taking a slower pace. I changed the URLs on the Syllabus page to wikilinks and reworded things slightly around them. --Geniac 18:16, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

RE:Translations from English to Spanish Wikipedia

[edit]

There is no strict protocol for translating English-language to Spanish, and it certainly is not limited to featured articles. Sadly, articles from Word may not be uploaded to Wikipedia. What you can do is do the article in Word, copy-and-paste it to the edit box, create the article, and then wikify (format) it. --Agüeybaná 21:00, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Borbotones Team!! Contribution

[edit]
==100 WORDS: BORBOTONES TEAM!==

ABOUT YOUR USER AND DISCUSSION PAGE:

Nowadays the world is becoming smaller day by day. The main reason of this is the fast growing of means of communication. One of them, if not the most powerful is the Internet. Your discussion and user page helps us to realize the importance of networking as a good strategy for solving problems or starting a group project. It also represents a bigger confrontation with an English public that can’t be developed in a classroom. We learned from your conversations with mentors that some aspects we don’t know can be clarified by other people even if they aren’t from our culture or country. As you said Wikipedia is a community and we would probably have to deal with problems like disorientation but we have to consider that human can adapt to every environment.

MORE SPECIFIC OPINIONS ABOUT DISCUSSION PAGE:

*About e-mail and interviews as a formal reference: In Mexico it’s considered that an e-mail or interview is a reliable source when it comes from a recognized and well know people or group of people. Even APA considers e-mail as a source. This is the way to cite them: Author > URL > Subject > Date > Name of the server used (hotmail, yahoo…)

*Infoboxes: they are a good tool if you want to have your pages organized. However as Richard tells us, don’t waste too much time with them because the project is for upgrading English skills not editing Wikipedia.

*Translating from English to Spanish (articles): I think that translating an article from English to Spanish is not a big problem. However we are humans and of course we make mistakes. We should check spelling and redaction when finishing translating so that your article will not be a “run-on”.

*Titles and signature: About the discussion page we would like to invite users to use Titles because sometimes it was a little difficult to follow the conversation. EDGAR-ENCASTIN 03:31, 23 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

While it is true that emails can be accepted as valid sources in academic papers, Wikipedia does not accept them due to the inability to verify. The only way anyone at Wikipedia has for verification realitically is to be able to go to the source itself to check. While a regular publisher may have the resources to go and contact the knowledgable person who wrote the email, WP does not. That is the principle reason we cannot use emails as sources.Thelmadatter 15:09, 24 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

100 shocked head words

[edit]

We think that this Project is very ambitious because of its goals. First of all the project not only help us learning more about English, it also help us interacting with people. The way we can interact with people is not only by finding help in mentors and talking to them, the interaction is done since uploading an article or a comment. On the other hand, by uploading comments or updating our group pages, we got corrections or even disappointments. As we have read, we will have to upload a stub in the third partial in order to complete our assignments and we find it very interesting. The reason we think that is the fact that the stub wont be helpful only for us, but every Wikipedian on the web. --Flea 1100962 02:56, 25 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry teacher I hadn't done this before... well during my "surf" here I could notice there were some probles during Account Creation, due to the fact that J told you it was prohibited to share an account and a password with other people. I found it good, because in that case you can "protect" yourself for being used as "bad example" in wikipedia. I hadn't thought about the fact that it is not really easy to organize all these pages, but reading what the mentors did to your page and how they helped me to reorganize mine, i finally came to the idea it is a hard work. I know not only surfing here is a "contribution" to wikipedia, I've come to the conclusion that using wikipedia can be accurate if we all help to do so. Arezvik 19:26, 25 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Working on Toluca page

[edit]

Next week (Oct 1-4), my students will be working on the page about Toluca Mexico to improve it (our school is located here). You can help by looking at the page and making comments about what needs to be improved on the page on Talk:Toluca. In particular, comment on things needed to wikify the page and/or things that you, as a "foreigner" find confusing and/or incomplete. As residents here, I'm sure my students will also think of things that need to be changed or added. Thelmadatter 14:19, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

How do I archive?

[edit]

Now that students are done looking at my old messages, how do I archive them? Thelmadatter 14:19, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

First You have to create an archive subpage of your talk page. Then all you have to do is move them there in chronological order depending on when the discussion was first started. See Help:Archiving a talk page for more. I actually have a bot archive my talk page for me. You might not want that because some of these discussions might be relevant later. Thanks for the update! Btw, State of Mexico isn't an article; it's a redirect to México (state), which I see you have piped in your wikilink. I thought I'd point this out in case somebody thinks your students will be editing the redirect and not the article. I advise using actual article titles when talking about them when possible; it's usually simpler and clearer. Btw also, can you remind your students to always log in before editing? New Photo uploaded
Hi miss, here I send you the links to my new contribution. I upload an image of the twelve angle rock, the most famous rock of all the Inca walls. It is famous because of it's perfection and also because it has 12 angles. This rock is even the image of the most famous beer in my country (Perú), "Cuzqueña". Very interesting. Galleries are nice but not really very informative. It just makes me want to ask if you couldn't find a place for this picture where you can put some text describing what the Inca Wall is and why this stone is interesting. I'm guessing that it is because the stone mason's carefully carved 12 angles so that this stone could fit into the wall. Is there enough text to write an article on the Inca Wall? Is this wall known by that name? You could also upload a picture of a bottle of Cuzqueña and use it to support the point about the notability of this stone.

Mentors and anyone else who is interested... please take a look at the group talk pages of my students (on the navigation bar). On their pages I had them put up how they would like to modify a section of either the Toluca or State of Mexico page, depending on the class section they are in. I have them citing using APA format right now, but we will cover Wikipedia style on Monday. From what I have read, the information found is really good, but pointers on grammar, expression etc. would be appreciated. It would be really nice if they could hear it from someone other than me all the time! :D These modifications are practice to get an idea of what to do for their assignments for this month.Thelmadatter 16:53, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

HELP, PLEASE

[edit]

Hello teacher, we have already uploaded to wikipedia our contribution of Pemexgate but we can not find how to make the references appear at the end. We followed the instructions as in the Toluca page but it doesn`t work. Could you help us please??? Lirdoco

There are a couple different ways to do this. I suggest that you follow each sentence that you wish to add a reference to with <ref> and </ref>. Your reference information goes between the <ref> and the </ref>. <ref> comes before your reference information and </ref> comes after.
Then, at the end of the article, add a section called "References". Use ==References== to create the section. Then add this line <references />.
That should do it.
I have fixed the Pemexgate article for you. Some attention will be needed to improve the English but it looks like a good start. I will try to come back and look at the English when I have more time.
Good work. Keep it up.

Hello teacher 2007 Tabasco floodI made my contribution is the one of interestings facts. Den-dede 02:36, 13 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Another editor has removed your text as being inappropriate to that article. I'm sorry but I agree that it doesn't fit with that article. It does, however, seem to be a useful addition to the Tabasco article which is where I have placed your text. I have made some corrections to the text.
  1. "is waiting..." is presumbably a direct translation from the Spanish "está esperando" but this is not colloquial. "is waiting for..." is more better English but still not quite colloquial to express what's really going on. The question here is who is planning the project, who is sponsoring/funding it and who will actually supervise the construction of such a project. Is this a national project or a local/regional project? Is Tabasco awaiting a project being planned, funded and managed by an agency of the national government? If so, "awaiting" or "expecting" are reasonable ways to express this. If, however, Tabasco is the main driver behind this project, then "contemplating", "planning" or "developing" are better ways to express this. I used "contemplating". If this is not the right sense ("sentido" en español) of meaning, then please fix it.
  2. In English, "hydraulic" means "having to do with fluids and liquids" and is a very general term. The phrase that we use in English is "hydroelectric power" or just "hydropower". I'm not sure if you would use "explotación" in this context in Spanish, but you would in English.
  3. "Intensity of rain" is probably not what you mean here. "Intensity" suggests that you are discussing how much rain falls in a short period of time (hours, days). For hydropower, what you need is total volume of annual rainfall. Well, I'm not an expert in hydropower but that's my personal guess.
  4. "is up 3200MW" suggests that the exploitation of hydropower has increased 3200MW ("ha augmentado" en español). The text on the website says "asciende a 3200MW" which translates as "has risen to (a level of) 3200MW". This is an important difference.
  5. Acronyms like CONAE should be in all caps. Using upper and lower case as in "Conae" is confusing. Also, the first time you use an acronym in a document, chapter or major section, spell out the acronym. Since this is Wikipedia, use the English translation (National Commission for Energy Conservation).
Hope this helps.

Two articles on natural disasters need expansion

[edit]

Hello, I hope that your project is going well. I would like to let you know of two articles that may be of interest. They both need more information added relative to Mexico.

I created 2007 Tabasco flood yesterday. It is currently linked from the Main Page due to the importance of this event, but the article still needs expansion.

Also, the October 2007 California wildfires article includes a brief mention of the fires in Northern Mexico, but this section needs expansion. Could someone please help add information to that part of the article? Best, Johntex\talk 14:58, 7 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the semester went pretty well! So well that over a third of my students increased their TOEFL scores by 20 points or more... very significant! Now comes the good/bad news.... Ive been asked to repeat the course, modified for teachers here at the Tec campus. Oh joy oh joy! Actually, the nice thing is that these are older and (hopefully!) more mature students. They will be working on their contributions to Wikipedia independently, not in groups. Some, however, may be a bit technophobic (despite the fact working at a tech high school/college!). I would like to say that, as an educator, I find your recent comment which states that "it's a bad educator that bans their students from reading Wikipedia"[8] is ignorant, rude, and disrespectful of people who actually know how to teach and have dedicated their lives to doing so. You may revel in amateurism, but professionals can see that this site is a terrible education resource. 1.33% of the Wikipedia is tagged for cleanup alone. It may be interesting as a general trivia site, but it is not something I would permit my students to learn from, whether you call me a 'bad educator' or no. 86.142.48.123 (talk) 16:30, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I was going to write something here but I was stuck in a meeting this morning for 3 hours *groan* I, too, have to disagree with your statement that Wikipedia should be accepted for schoolwork. You even included the caveat that only articles that are well-cited should be used. What teacher is going to want to analyze every Wikipedia article cited to see if it is acceptable for use? Also, many (if not all) elementary, middle or even high school students would not be able to determine if an article overall has good citations or not. Besides, it is generally accepted that terciary sources are not academically acceptable. I teach my students to use encyclopedias, Wikipedia included, only to begin their research when they have no clue about the topic. Also, there is nothing wrong with chaining to the sources that many entries cite like newspaper articles, books etc but use the information from the original... not the encyclopedia. I write you this as one who uses Wikipedia extensively (see my user page and WP:SUP) for my writing and Advanced EFL classes. Don't throw down the gauntlet to educators... you get the reaction like the one above. However, keep pushing to make Wikipedia better. You are right that students do use it, even if prohibited. Plus, it is proving to be a really excellent way to get students to write and research.Thelmadatter (talk) 19:05, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The BBC article is entirely misleading about my remarks. My opinion on the proper use of Wikipedia in the educational environment has not changed one bit. I believe that our anonymous teacher, above, would respond as the audience did: strong applause. The key, of course, is to hear what I actually said, rather than this misreporting. I have asked the BBC to run a correction.
I believe that educators whose entire response to Wikipedia is to tell students not to look at it are in fact bad educators. Good teachers will understand that the right approach is to teach students about the weaknessess - and strengths - of Wikipedia. And to caution them that Wikipedia is not an acceptable source for an academic citation, any more than Britannica is. Thelmadatter, I agree absolutely with your remarks about the use of Wikipedia in the classroom, and based on reading what you have said, I suspect we would have to work really hard in a conversation to find any differences in our opinions at all on these matters.  :-) So, I please innocent.--Jimbo Wales 19:18, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

finding an old page

[edit]

Need a favor... when my class started working on the Mexico State page (as it is now called) it was called México (state) and had only information from the 1911 Encyclopedia Britanica. However, when I got into the page's history I cant get to that version. Looks like there were two pages with two different names that got merged. Does that version no longer exist? Thelmadatter (talk) 17:08, 10 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure but perhaps this is the revision that you are looking for. If not, you will have to look through the page history of Mexico State to find the specific revision that you are looking for.
As to what happened, this is probably more than you want to know but...
  1. When you try to visit the México (state) article, you are redirected to Mexico State
  2. However, the reason for this is that México (state) was moved to State of Mexico on October 6
  3. How would you determine this? When you visit México (state) and get redirected to Mexico State, there is a notice of the redirect that says "(Redirected from México (state))". If you click on the wikilink in the above notice, you are brought to the title México (state). If you now click on the "History" tab, it will tell you that User:GTBacchus performed the move on October 6.
  4. And therefore, all the page history for México (state) was also moved to State of Mexico
  5. If you look at the page history of State of Mexico, you will see that it was moved to Mexico (state) on December 6 by User:GTBacchus
  6. And therefore, all the page history for State of Mexico was also moved to Mexico State
  7. If you go to Mexico State and click on "History", you should be able to find the version you want sometime before October 6.
I know the above is a lot of extra detail that you don't necessarily need to know right now but I thought it would be useful if you understood how to noodle this out for yourself. (teaching you to fish rather than giving you the fish).
Best regards,
Richard

Rewrite

[edit]

yes JW 21... but actually I was looking to find the category page that list all the lousy articles that need to be rewritten, which I have done. As lousy as my talk page might be, I doubt anyone, including me, wants to rewrite it! :D Thelmadatter (talk) 17:31, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Im working to develop a kind of "cheat sheet" where the headings, reference list and other coding is already set up. Students could take the cheat sheet and use it to create pages and get started contributing to Wikipedia faster. I noticed that waiting almost 2 months before students really start putting anything up on Wikipedia in Advanced B, despite the fact that "getting integrated and familiar with the community's standards" was part of the course, was really too long. For Advanced A, I wont have any time to get them familiar with all of Wikipedia's policies. I know Alixb and Hugo Estrada are interested in developing the pages for all the towns/cities in Mexico. Here's the idea I have (I dont know how to make the codes NOT do what they are supposed to do, so you may have to look at the section below in edit mode to see what I wrote for my students in MS Word)

The coding for an infobox could be added to this sheet but the idea here is to get students contributing as quickly and easily as possible and still keep in guidelines. It could also work to standardize a bit more how these kinds of articles are written. Other cheat sheets could be devised for biographies, movies etc. Whaddya think?

I have moved the actual outline to Template:Mexican municipality. This template should be used with substitution as in {{subst:Mexican municipality}}. We will have to work on adding an infobox and maybe providing some parameters to the template.
This is the sort of thing that should be discussed with WP:MEXICO. I think one of the instructors offered to help with infoboxes but we demurred suggesting that the focus should be on writing English not building infoboxes. Now is the time to take him up on his offer.

For an example of how this template would work eventually, look at Template:SCOTUS-case. Then create a new article in userspace using the following line...

{{subst:SCOTUS-case|Wooley v. Maynard|430|705|1977|held that New Hampshire could not constitutionally require citizens to display the state motto upon their vehicle license plates}}
If you put everything starting with the {{ and }} on a new page and hit "Show preview", you will see that an entire article outline is provided for the SCOTUS case.
Look at Wooley v. Maynard to see the actual outline that the template generated.
--Richard 22:29, 7 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good, we should definately discuss it and get a template expert here! Alixb 23:57, 7 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As I stated on the WP:MEXICO talk page, Richard is a Wikipedia god! hee hee hee I had no idea such an idea existed before, but this should be very helpful. I dont quite understand what you mean by "This template should be used with substitution as in {{subst:Mexican municipality}}. ", however.
On a personal note, Im in Veracruz this weekend attending a MexTESOL conference (for English teachers in Mexico)... sun, sand, sea, 85F/28C temps.....ah the sacrifices I make for my students!!!! Thelmadatter 00:55, 10 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Students gearing up to work with Wikipedia

[edit]

I dont know if I will have time to contact those on my list of mentors, so Im hoping most of you guys have this page on your watchlist. A course for teachers at my school, based on Wikipedia begins on Monday Jan 28. I will very shortly put a list of projects they will need to do at Wikipedia:School_and_university_projects/ITESM_Campus_Toluca/Syllabus and a list of student userpages as soon as possible. These students will not be working in groups.

I would really appreciate mentor help with these students, not only for the authenticity of the Wikipedia experience but I need to confirm some comments that my Advanced B students made last semester. I receive several negative comments and no positive comments about working with mentors. Most of the negative comments were that mentors never answered or gave any real help. Now I dont know if that is accurate or if students were asking mentors to practically write their articles for them. I would like to see what more mature adults have to say about working with more seasoned Wikipedians.

Advanced A will do a 3-day mini-project in Wikipedia, using the town article "cheat sheet" template I developed Template:Mexican_municipality. These students will be working in groups but considering the brief duration of this mini-project, I will simply have each student create an account and upload a portion of the article the group creates. I dont think it will be practical or necessary to elict help from mentors for these guys. ****

FritzBot and ongoing attempt to document Mexican municipalities

[edit]

There is a lively discussion about the proposal to have a bot create articles for all of the worlds documented towns and villages, see Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)/FritzpollBot. There are already a LOT of responses on this page and I have only scanned the various comments. This may affect my use of Wikipedia for my English classes as such a bot would create a ton of articles about Mexican towns and villages... whether such have municipal status or not. If such bot does go forward and do this, I would really like to see some kind of consensus about whether to combine town/municipality articles or not. After struggling with the issue and with my students, I really do think that in most cases, especially dealing with central and southern Mexico (which I am more familiar with), combining the two is the most logical choice, as for many, either the town is the only community of any real size (like most cases in Oaxaca) or conversely, the city and the municipality are co-extensive. As for naming convention, naming such combined articles seems to be best done under the town/village's name (most have the same name, at least partially but where the are different, the city name would be more distinctive in most cases... and the bot is going to create a page with the town/village's full name anyway. For towns/municipalities that have the same common name (like Atizapán or Acatlán), disambiguation pages will serve.

Another issue is standardizing infoboxes... I would like to see one for towns with municipal status and towns/villages without such. Ive made a first attempt at such at the Acambay, Mexico State page, though you will have to see it in edit mode to see all the information I think needs to be in there. I have not created one for non-municipal towns/villages but such should include a line stating which municipality it belongs to.

Infobox help needed

[edit]

{{helpme}}

I have put up (new) infoboxes for all the articles that exist that link from Municipalities of Mexico State. However, I want both the population figure for the municipality and the town/city to appear in the infobox. The information is in there but does not appear on the article. For example the article for Acambay. I know I need to do something with the code but I cant figure out what.Thelmadatter (talk) 16:54, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Isn't the town listed at the very top of the box? What info for the Acambay article is missing in the box? GtstrickyTalk or C 17:12, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you look at the article in edit mode and scroll down a little, you will see that I have put in two population figures.. one for the municipality (the area the town is govermentally responsible for) and one for the town, itself. I would like both to appear and clearly labeled to show which is which. Thelmadatter (talk) 17:16, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I see:
Population (2005)Municipality
- Municipality 56,847
- Seat 3,724
Is this not what you want? :-) Stwalkerstertalk ] 17:17, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Humboldt picture

[edit]

The information below the image HumboldtHouseDF.JPG in the article about Alexander von Humboldt reads: House were Alexander von Humboldt lived in Mexico City in 1863, located at 80 Rep. de Uruguay[...].
Humboldt certainly did not live there in 1863 as he was already dead at that time. The correct year would certainly be 1803, when he stayed in Mexico City for about 9 months.

Mexican municipalities and towns

[edit]

Hi. Myself and User:Aille are currently working through Mexican municipalities and their seats and starting them like Canatlán. See Wikipedia:WikiProject Mexico/State templates for the templates we've created. It would be great if you could join our little project and help get all municipalities and towns up and running using the "Enciclopedia de municipios". So far I've reached Durango state Count Blofeld 11:14, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes for some of the states particularly if the municipalities are smaller I think its best to combine them, well initially anyway. Main priority though is to get them up and running so we have an article on every municipality/town. I've done a fair bit of work on Salvador too with infoboxes but the rest of Central America, and well Latin America as a whole from Mexico down to Chile needs a lot of work also. I;ve translated numerous articles from Spanish wikipedia like Tenerife and expanded Xalapa from the Enciclopedia but I'm not completely fluent although have a good understanding of it Count Blofeld 17:15, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Feel free to add the towns to Template:Mexico State like I've done with Template:Chiapas

Excellent. Perhaps you could add the pinmaps and municipal locators to the infoboxes? Count Blofeld 19:59, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Municipios

[edit]

Thanks for the message, and the tips on sources. I take the point about a lot of the EdoMex's municipalities (particularly the conurbated ones) being coextensive with the cabeceras. And even for the bigger ones (Dgo, Chih, Coah...), there's the point about whether it's worthwhile to have two mutually reinforcing stubs: "name is a municipality in..." & "name is a town in the municipality of..." -- it's a major event when you find a muni article that actually has more than one "settlement in it" article (tho' it did happen to me last night down in Campeche). One tries to reassure oneself that what we're doing is articulating a framework from which future articles will hang, but even so... although the gaps are discouraging, the quality of a lot of the existing articles is even more. I was wary of touching the EdoMex, but looking at the template there above, it doesn't look so bad: half done, or thereabouts. Nomenclature is another problem (formal city names with "de Fulano de Tal" that are never used in real life, etc.), but extensive preemptive redirects can take of that. See you around the municipalities, then. Aille (talk) 20:19, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Good luck with Oaxaca. Naturally with a gigantic 571 municipalities we will not want to be having seperate articles on the towns and munics. I can't really imagine 1142 links in the infobox anyway. Oaxaca is a perfect example of where it is sensible to merge them Count Blofeld 23:16, 14 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Care to fill out:

I;ve placed them ready seehere. Just need to delete the doubles and format it. I'll default set it at collapsed ready as it will be considerably larger than the others when completed Count Blofeld 23:23, 14 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nominate that for GA...

[edit]

Incredible work on 1985 Mexico City earthquake, it's well past GA criteria, nominate it at good article nominations, please. Also, would you be interested in joining WikiProject Earthquakes? —Ceran (speak) 21:21, 28 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am not criticising you, I am criticising the article. There is a big difference. As a reviewer or reader I'm uninterested in who contributed to it; the article has been put up for GAC and you should expect constructive criticism. As well as my review comments, I corrected a great many spelling mistakes and grammatical faults and I'm not even half-way through. The article as it stands is most certainly not worthy of GA status, but if you and other editors are willing to correct these problems then it may well qualify.

You don't need to put references on the end of each line, but you do need to make sure you include references that work. Reference 6, does not. I haven't checked all the other references because there are so many issues with the article in general. If I were you, I'd have a look at a few featured articles from the front page and try to integrate the formatting there into this article. For instance, the Frank Zappa article uses the plain citation tag throughout. The MoS says not to mix the two templates, as the results are formatted inconsistently.

I'm sorry if you don't like articles to which you have contributed being criticised, but you should remember - "If you don't want your writing to be edited mercilessly or redistributed for profit by others, do not submit it." This is written on the edit page of every article. I have edited plenty of articles myself, and have helped a few along to GA status, and one to FAC (recently TFA). Check my user page to see which - then look at the history of some of those articles. You'll see some quite merciless criticism in the reviews. You should remember that the people reading the article will not be able to assume anything, as an editor who contributed would - they don't have the expert knowledge. My role as a reviewer is to point that out. The article should be accessible for anyone. Parrot of Doom (talk) 16:48, 6 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I'm 95% happy with the article now. If you could just address the remaining issues, I'll pass the article immediately. Parrot of Doom (talk) 02:01, 9 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank-you. I'm sorry we got off to a bad start, but I was impressed by the speed with which you worked on my requests - you're obviously a keen wikipedian (as am I). I hope the process hasn't put you off, my first GA nomination was rejected out of hand in less than a day! I had a search on Google Book search for the cathedral and found quite a few references you may be interested in. I include them in my articles where relevant, I reference them as a book (although some of the sources I've used have been over 200 years old!). It may well be worth a look around. Parrot of Doom (talk) 00:53, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I know the feeling, don't worry about it. Look at me, I made a stupid mistake on that citations business. I must have brain fade, I've been doing a hell of a lot of editing lately :) Best of luck with future articles, and I hope to see that Cathedral article on the TFA section of the front page one day. Good articles

[edit]

Seriously mate complaining to Jimbo Wales is about the least effective thing you can do about it. Speaking to Jimbo about encyclopedic content is about as useless as tits on a boar's head, to put it mildly. He rarely bothers responding or seems to show any interest to anything content related, except some controversial article but will happily answer to complaints about "rogue admin" etc. Yes often it does seem like nit-picking FA articles in particular you'll be astounded by how fussy people are over it. As I've said before there are thousands upon thousands of "good" B class articles but have minor issues which prevent them from being a GA. The best thing you can do is stick with it and look at the notes of the reviewer or conduct a peer review to get some feedback. Count Blofeld 17:21, 6 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I'd recommend reading Wikipedia:Good article criteria and talking on related pages. Also you could create an essay yourself on the subject if you would like to help other editors like yourself you are finding it frustrating developing articles. In general I'd discuss something at the Wikipedia:Village pump. Best of luck! Count Blofeld 10:05, 7 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. on a quick glance Valley of Mexico looks an excellent start and I'm pretty sure it could pass GA with a bit of editing. If you need any help (having 41 GAs myself) let me know! I can look into it later if you like. The main problem initially I see is often you don't reference important claims in the article. Some of the lesser important sentences are referenced but some of the major claims you make are not backed up. Imagine you are a random reader. Think about it from another point of view. What would constitute an authoritive encyclopedia article. If there are important claims (as I've added cite tags to in the article) how do I go about making this seem accurate and verifiable to the reader and to improve its integrity? Count Blofeld 10:13, 7 December 2008 (UTC) Count Blofeld 10:07, 7 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes with GAs and FAs the writing might be even be brilliant but if it has some strong claims unreferenced or some minor MOS problems it will fail straight away. I know of many B class articles which in terms of content are superb but are failing in references and MOS problems which means that they ar enot even GA. You don't have to cite every single sentence but those which are solid facts or are strong claims would need to be sound with references. As I said think Verification. The reader needs to be assured that what they are reading is completely accurate and if they come across important information they need to check the source. Thats the beauty of wikipedia in that people can slag us off for being unreliable but if articles have many sources and references that can instantly be verified we become more of a platform for recirculating existing information rather than a primary source of doubt. This is why references are extremely important to this encyclopedia to make it more credible and avoid original research. Once you become accustomed with what is required you can let your writing do the talking and the GAs will soon come naturally. Expect a few knock backs along the way, I also hate criticism but try to utilise the negative feedback that others may give and turn it into ways you can increase your standard of writing, thats what I do. Keep up the good work, especially glad it is Mexican related given the inadequacy that currently exists on Mexican subjects. 10:24, 8 December 2008 (UTC) Count Blofeld

Congrats on the cathedral article. One thing the reviewer missed though is that without a doubt a citation needs to support the claim "the largest organ in the Americas". Anything strong like that needs backing up. ANyway both articles sound good, I'd go with Valley of Mexico first. I can read it later if you like and make any copy edits or suggestions The Bald One White cat 10:52, 10 December 2008 (UTC) Excellent I'll pay the hydrology section a visit tomorrow but as I said it looked alright from what I saw. One thing, yesterday I started the Template:Mexican Federal Highways. Could you try to expand them? They don't have to be GAs but any sources you can find to prove their worth would be good, I had a hard time last might explaining to a new page patroller that they are national highways and clearly of note The Bald One White cat 23:19, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am very sorry to hear that circumstances prevent you from working on this article in the near future. Apart from the need make "Pollution" and "Hydrology" more concise (pretty much done for "Pollution"), most of the issues are minor and IMO could be cleared up fairly quickly. I hope your difficulties are quickly resolved and that you will re-submit the article after fixing the issues. In that case I'm sure it will quickly pass as a GA. Thanks for the work you have already put into it, and for producing such an interesting and varied article. Best wishes, --Philcha (talk) 09:40, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Valle de Chalco

[edit]

Hello! I believe the redirect from Valle de Chalco Solidaridad to Xico should be removed. I lived in Valle de Chalco for approximately five years, and absolutely NO ONE refers to it as Xico. In fact, if you say you live in Xico, and unless you are replying to a question about exactly where in Valle de Chalco you live, the assumption will be that you live in the town of Xico in the state of Veracruz. And even then, you are more likely to give the name of your colonia than just say "Xico." You will also note that, in Spanish Wikipedia, Valle de Chalco Solidaridad has its own article, with no redirect to Xico.

I went ahead and wrote a new article on Valle de Chalco. The reason I did this is because an administrator explained that your redirect could not be removed. However, you've got some great stuff in your article. Not only that, but it's silly to have "dueling articles." Would you be open to removing the redirect and combining the info from the two articles? Thanks. Escuincla (talk) 14:58, 27 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ok. I went ahead and changed the Valle de Chalco Solidaridad redirect to Valle de Chalco. Once I finish gleaning info from your Xico article, I'll redirect that, too, to Valle de Chalco. I only just started, three days ago, contributing to Wikipedia. (Has it really been only three days???!!!). But I'm already an addict. Hi Thelmadatter. I think it'd be better if this article had a simpler title, either Librería Porrúa or Editorial Porrúa — these are both registered sociedad anónima company names, I don't think they need disambiguating or translating in the title.

Also depends on whether separate articles are desirable for the bookselling arm, and the publishing arm. I think, at this stage, we could probably combine info on these in the same article - would you agree? And if so, which do we put it under — I'd suggest the publishing arm as that would be more often linked to, but either really would work. Saludos, --cjllw ʘ TALK 02:26, 7 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm glad to see that you got your hands on Barrios as a source for the Pulque article. Too bad it's no longer in print. Those sites you used are obviously modeled after Barrios. Generally in Wikipedia the web sites would be put in an external links section and the books like Barrios and Caso would be in a references section. I saw your comment on Himalayan Explorer's talk page, and remembered your classes. But, if you do have any class projects coming up, and you think I might be able to help, let me know. John Carter (talk) 01:41, 16 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Curiosity. What exactly would you mean by "Mexican" mythology? Presumably something other than the major Aztec, etc.? If you want, I think there might be some material around here on more recent mythology, but I'd have to check. If you think I could help, though, let me know. Aztec mythology was really unusual though. Particularly the incarnation of I think Quetzalcoatl who, if I remember right, walked the streets at night and had his chest open and close, showing no heart, to the sound of thunder. I read that about 20 years ago now, and it still creeps me out. John Carter (talk) 02:24, 16 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

HAHAHA, I'm sorry, I couldn't help it, "dismother" sounds quite Mexican hahaha. Anyway, back to Querétaro. I think the article would do better if it was modeled after another FA for a city, such as Manchester. The main issue with Mexican cities is not exactly the lack of sources, but the lack of sources in english. And sometimes translation of available sources does not help very much. Anyway, I would be glad to help c/e and complements. Perhaps it is better to copy the article (or sections of it) into one of our user namespaces for any changes we make. > RUL3R>trolling>vandalism 00:19, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well, "dismother" is no english word haha, you must know that already. The closest english translation could be "quite f****d up", but "messy" would do for a sufficient one. As for the article, I just copied it in my namespace at User:RUL3R/Qro, to edit without incurring in conflicts in the article namespace, and so discussion is less messy. > RUL3R>trolling>vandalism 01:24, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Boudin

[edit]

Mmm The boudin balls are made from a rice and pork mixture, which is then rolled in a cornmeal batter and then deep fried. They're really good!! I want to work on expanding some Mexican cuisine articles soon; I would really like to help break down the misconception that Mexican cuisine is all tacos, enchaladas and refried beans. LOL.. nsaum75 ¡שיחת! 04:58, 26 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

My talk page was the target of a "battle" a couple of days ago, and somehow your last message got lost in the midst of several editors trying to revert the works of a persistent vandal. Anyhow, my apologies for the tardy reply. I would love to meet up, however I will be in Israel during the latter part of December and first part of January. Perhaps another time...or some time when I swing through Mexico City? --nsaum75 ¡שיחת! 02:21, 29 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Greetings y Feliz Año Nuevo!! My internet is currently limited here, so I am not able to contribute to the Beer in Mexico article as much as I would like, however when I return in a few days, I'll see what I can add. I am still firmly against summarily deleting content just because the source is not the best -- rather I think room should be left for expansion and improvement of the source (as I noted in my comment on the Beer page). There are articles on celebrities based on friggin MySpace and YouTube fan pages -- and I certainly think a beer festival website is much more reputable than something run by a 15 year old.
Alas, the source-issues raised by Ronz are similar to ones I run into all the time in regards to Israeli/Arab/Middle Eastern cuisine -- lack of English sources and those that do exist are sometimes questionable in nature and/or political/promotional. For instance, Hummus has been repeatedly placed under protection due to edit warring over the use of the word "Israel" in the article. Some editors try to replace the word "Israel" with "Zionist Entity" or insert material sourced from "political newsletters" that state "Israeli solders make Palestinians drink urine and dance while singing about Hummus."... I mean, its insane... its friggin food! Anyhow, sorry to ramble. I'll check for more sources and hopefully be able to contribute more when I get back from my trip.
Hasta! -nsaum75¡שיחת! 23:15, 31 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

DYK change =

[edit]

The 5x expansion results in obscure, new articles qualifying but expanded articles not qualifying. Let's change it to 5x or 3x if there is significant, quality expansion of a stub. I don't have time to lobby and campaign so feel free to start a talk page discussion and I authorise you to cut and paste this comment in up to three times. Suomi Finland 2009 (talk) 20:33, 26 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

An alternative way for recognition for article expansion is GA (good article). Believe me, it is not an easy process. Took me 2 months of work to get an article to GA, maybe a week if you work on it daily for a few hours. Suomi Finland 2009 (talk) 16:55, 27 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Chocolate

[edit]

Hola Amiga! I had started to create an article on Chocolate Mayordomo, when I started thinking perhaps an article on chocolate in Mexico would be a good idea. We are the birthplace of chocolate, and unlike the rest of the world, Mexico uses chocolate in all kinds of savory dishes. Anyhow, before I moved forward, I wanted to "poll" some members and see what their general feelings might be towards such an article. Cheers! --nsaum75 ¡שיחת! 02:46, 9 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Beer in Mexico

[edit]

I appreciate that someone with your skills is helping with Wikipedia. Sorry that my comments were repetitious, but I first wanted it to be clear what I thought of each source. At this point, I think it might be better to focus on the general discussion above the list of sources, identifying what aspects of WP:RS and WP:SELFPUB (and any other relevant policy/guideline) apply and how closely they should be followed. My intention is to clean up the poorly-written beer-related articles that are regularly targeted by spammers. --Ronz (talk) 06:12, 31 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

First that all: Happy New Year!. Thank you very much about the photos of Rotunda of Illustrious Persons. I have already used all of them in each biographical article at Spanish Wikipedia. Well, I still need to create 18 articles in order to use all your photos, if I have the time of course. I do not visit the English Wikipedia frequently, if you need something you can write me into my userpage at Spanish Wikpedia. Best Regards. --Jaontiveros (talk) 20:22, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Although I disagree with you about the hook for this DYK, I will provide you with the cite for the underlying journal article that prompted the newspaper article to which this hook was cited:

Well it was a general sport complex as well, but the owner, Salvador Lutteroth was a wrestling promoter primarly but also promoted boxing so I'm not surprised it was used for Boxing right away, but it was built to accomodate the increasing crowds for wrestling - it doesn't conflict IMO but it definitly needs adding, I'll have a look at it.  MPJ -DK  20:46, 25 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah! Help at the prep queues :). Looks good. A friendly tip is to place a {{inuse}} tag on the top of the prep area you are working on. Febrero 2010

[edit]

I can't remember if I mentioned this before, but eventually I would like to develop a few articles on some of the more popular beers in Mexico. Note, I said popular beers in Mexico and not popular Mexican beers -- lol. I like to tell my friends in the US -- while they throw back a "fine" imported US$4.75 bottle of Corona -- that Corona in Mexico is the same as Bud Light in the US...ie: drinkable, but nothing special. Anyhow I've started an incubator for Montejo, simply because I already had photos on hand. Who knows if it will ever reach the point of becoming an article, but I thought I would give it a try. Not much is written yet, as between traveling and work, I just haven't had much time to sit down and go searching for stuff. You're welcome to add to it, if you happen to come across any Montejo-related material while working on the "Beer in Mexico" article. ¡Saludos! --nsaum75¡שיחת! 05:22, 19 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Heads up on assembling DYK sets

[edit]

Assembling the sets is an art which all of us keep mastering and without feedback it is hard to get better. Thus (i) please respect the wish of the nominators to feature the hook on specific date; this was meant for 8 March (no big deal); (ii) the last hook is supposed to be quirky, which is off course subjective, but IMO this was not. Regarding your comment.

  • Cited references (5 and 8) dated 2003, says "Existing hydropower plants constitute 360 MW (30% of the generating capacity), and hence only 1% of the exploitable potential has been developed." Exploitable hydro potential being 39,624 MW. (360 / 39,624= .009 = .9%, say 1%)
6% figure comes from updated existing hydro output (of commissioned plants #1-19) of at least 2,449 MW. (2,449 MW / 39,624 MW = .061 = 6.1%).

Do you mind if I add a "Military conflict" infobox to the article?radek (talk) 11:29, 13 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

One thing. I'm a little skeptical of the number of 60,000 for dead or wounded on the insurgents side. That would be an extremely high casualty rate, even allowing for the lack of training and equipment. This source [10] says "2000 killed, and many more wounded". Even being generous with the wounded, it's very unlikely that you'd get 60,000. My guess is that the source in the article is including the 40,000 (mentioned in the same source) in the number.radek (talk) 05:23, 14 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oh yes, I remember starting some of the northern desert municipalities some of which are well over 1000 square kilometres and remember thinking how certain parts of the municipality undoubtedly differ from the main town. This is why ideally I think we should have seperate articles on both and also articles on other major towns and villages within the muniicpalities. The municipalities of some of the northern states, especially Baja, are the exception, not the rule. Once you get out of the major deserts, municipalities are much, much, much smaller. Mexican map=

[edit]

Hi. This annoying German who barely edits english wikipedia keeps reverting my map updates see this. Which map would you prefer to use? Personally I find the blank Mexico map less professional looking than the relief map which is more realistic and gives the reader an idea of altitude which is very important. The rendering is much more attractive in my view. Which do you prefer, File:Mexico relief location map.jpg or File:Mexico location map.svg? We need to form a consensus over this otherwise this Oboe user is going to continue to revert. Dr. Blofeld White cat 16:50, 8 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've replaced it with one with out rivers. Do you want me to create a Template:Location map Mexico Mexico City or not?? Dr. Blofeld White cat 18:08, 8 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Granted. See Chapultepec Castle. You probably disapprove of it though and think it has too much detail. Well, that the best I can manage for now... Dr. Blofeld White cat 18:37, 8 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I can, however, make maps of areas of Mexico which will be relatively blank. I'll try making a Template:Location map Mexico Oaxaca and tell me what you think. If there are any specific regional maps you want just ask. Dr. Blofeld White cat 18:41, 8 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

See Abejones

I made Template:Location map Mexico Yucatán. See Chacmultun and Chunchucmil. Dr. Blofeld White cat 13:30, 9 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I also found some existing maps and made some in Category:Mexico location map templates. I'm currently seeing whether we can convert existing municipal loators into blank svgs. If so there will be no need to make more like Yucatan. Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:50, 9 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A Barnstar for You!!

I have not once - ever - awarded one of these, but I was impressed with an overhaul you did on an article a few months ago and then I perused your contrib history...you completely and utterly deserve a barnstar. And I can't believe you don't already have one. (I had to go with the blanket "National Merit" because, surprisingly, there is not a Mexico star.) ocrasaroon blah blah blah

[edit]

Why did you revert my edits to this article? Colonies Chris (talk) 08:10, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think you've properly looked at the changes I made. I didn't add any quotes, I just converted existing curly quotes to straight quotes, per WP:MOS. I enclosed a few Spanish words and phrases in language templates and italicised them. They only appear once, so there was no question of repeating the italicisation, And I corrected a typo, which you've also reverted. Colonies Chris (talk) 18:01, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Have you bothered to either look at the changes I made or to read what I wrote above? I didn't add any quotation marks except around "La Bamba", which is in line with the Manual of Style (Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style_(music)#Popular_music; I didn't italicise any Spanish words more than once; I didn't italicise any place names. Cheese

[edit]

If you need photos of Cheese, let me know. I just posted a new one of Oaxaca cheese the other day....and while the markets around here don't have much aside from Oaxaca cheese, I did see cheese curds today (which at first I thought might be soaked maize). --nsaum75¡שיחת! 03:09, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I walk by Mercado Benito Juarez every day, so I'll go in tomorrow and see if there's a good cheese stall...if not, I'll hit up Asbastos on Thursday...the teachers have been bogging down most of the big markets the past two weeks (more so than usual), so a lot of the vendors just haven't been opening...sigh. --nsaum75¡שיחת! 02:03, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the teachers do deserve more than they are paid (one of the world's most important, yet inadequately compensated, professions)...but its been worse here than in years past. Usually the police keep their distance, but this year trucks with state police are everywhere...and in the middle of everything...it makes me wonder if they know something we dont... --nsaum75¡שיחת! 18:04, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I'm unimpressed with the cheese stands at Benito Juarez & Abastos...Benito Juarez is surrounded by protesters and construction...and Abastos doesn't have any variety -- all Oaxaca cheese. I'm going to the sunday-only Pochote organic market tomorrow morning, and they should have a variety of local artisan cheeses...Last time I was there they even had Panela made with chapulines!! Keep your fingers crossed that its not shut down by protesters too.. --nsaum75¡שיחת! 01:13, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You are now a Reviewer

[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 20:29, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sierra Norte / Juárez

[edit]

I have a feeling I have messed up... I started an article on Sierra Juárez, Oaxaca, mostly geographical (mountains, forests etc.), and then came across Sierra Norte de Oaxaca which seemed to be a different name for the same region. Looking at the size, number of sources and inbound links for each article, I decided to merge Sierra Norte into Sierra Juárez. But now I have an uncomfortable feeling that Sierra Norte is a larger region, including Sierras Villa Alta, Ixtlán and Juárez (see map in the article). Do you know if that is the case? Aymatth2 (talk) 19:58, 4 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the pointer. I was confusing a region with a range, part of a larger range. I am disentangling them now, and think I will continue with regions (and ranges) of Oaxaca for a while. Thanks, Aymatth2 (talk) 01:20, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

DYK nomination of Cullen Wines

[edit]

I have responded to your concern and suggested an alt that is hopefully suitable at DYK. Camw (talk) 02:36, 4 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I believe self published sources (such as the company website) are fine per WP:SELFPUB which says "Self-published and questionable sources may be used as sources of information about themselves, usually in articles about themselves or their activities", as long as they aren't the only source.
The general notability guidelines indicates that "If a topic has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject, it is presumed to satisfy the inclusion criteria for a stand-alone article" and I believe the subject meets this basic criteria through coverage by places like the largest Malaysian newspaper, WA Business News, major wine magazines, and the NY Times among plenty of others but I'm happy to get more opinions.
As to the overly promotional nature of the article, I've tried to stick to well sourced facts, happy to accept assistance if you have suggestions on how to improve it though. Camw (talk) 03:35, 4 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
SELFPUB is part of the official verifiability policy, so if you've had problems with another editor then feel free to bring it to their attention ;)
I've asked for a second opinion on the DYK nomination and we'll see how we go. Camw (talk) 01:21, 5 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent. For most lists though you should be able to fit them on the borough pages if you split column them like List of colonias in Coyoacán. One idea might just to create a single List of colonias of Mexico City. might be too many to cram on one page though, f you use columns it should be possible.. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:26, 4 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This might strike you as odd Thelma but inside the Trotsky museum have you ever felt there is a presence in any of the rooms like somebody is watching you or somebody is in the room with you and nobody is there sort of thing? Nomination for deletion of Template:Mexican municipality

[edit]

Template:Mexican municipality has been nominated for deletion. You are invited to comment on the discussion at the template's entry on the Templates for discussion page. Thank you. — This, that, and the other (talk) 09:47, 14 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I created this template for you to use in your project. It is now being proposed for deletion by another editor. The rationale given is:
This seems to be related to Wikipedia:School and university projects/ITESM Campus Toluca, which took place a few years ago. All the links seem to be by virtue of transclusions of Wikipedia:School and university projects/ITESM Campus Toluca/Navigation bar. Unused. — This, that, and the other (talk)09:47, 14 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to keep the template, you should explain why here. If not, do nothing and it will probably be deleted in a few days.

How are you doing? Drop me a line at my Talk Page and let me know.

I believe I addressed your issues at Template talk:Did you know#Articles created/expanded on February 8. The article specifies that the mayor approached the village's disincorporation as an artistic piece, that his book can be considered a component of the work, and there's also a large floated quotation analyzing the disincorporation on its artistic merits.

  • Coordinating various tasks and interacting with the various language communities of India. India is bit comlicated you might know. More than 40 language wiki communities itself.
  • Interacting with the local Government to get various things released under some free license so that it can be reused for wiki projects.
  • Developing technical solutions for various Indian language wiki projects.

Submitted Alt 1b as a rewording of Alt 1 I am suggesting as a hook. Alt1b is basically the same as Alt1, however it does not use the word "bodied". A detailed explanation of this is reference #1 of the website explaing what Henry Ford Museum said of the Soybean car.
http://content.usatoday.com/communities/driveon/post/2010/06/mystery-car-40-henry-fords-soybean-car/1
This is further explained in this website, which is also one of my references. It says: The “Soybean Car” was actually a plastic-bodied car unveiled by Henry Ford on August 13, 1941 at Dearborn Days, an annual community festival.
http://www.hemp.com/2011/01/henrys-hemp-car-not-so-much-hemp/
Would that then be acceptable?--Doug Coldwell talk 11:57, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Could you help me please? That other guy's behaviour is just disruptive. He's just trying to impose a POV by force. He was and still is the only one complaining about his own preferred version. I just keep reverting him as vandalism, because of the large pieces of text he's erasing (even if they are refereced). It is not fair that one single user can disrupt and mess up an entire article. Hi. I've copied the FA SPanish article to Talk:Barranquilla. I've begun translation. Its a huge article so all help is needed! Should take a few weeks but like with Montevideo and Tenerife etc is a core article. If you could help whenever you can translating a few paragraphs this would be a great help.♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:04, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yah flora and fauna is tricky...♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:16, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Can you translate this, its difficult for me:

You were reported to AIV regarding template editing

[edit]

Hi, as per the header you reported to AIV in respect to some edits to templates. As the reviewing admin I commented that you were unlikely to be vandalising the project and asked if these edits had been queried. The reporter contacted me on my talkpage, and said that they had but were reverted. It is very likely that this is an editor with little experience of the project, but - given that they came to me in response to my comments - even more likely to be a good faith contributor. I would be grateful if you could explain your edits to them, and answer any concerns they might have. Thanks, LessHeard vanU (talk) 22:25, 29 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

1921 Mexican Census

[edit]

Hey, I'm using the 1921 Mexican census just as a reference to the last official time the Mexican government asked all Mexicans about their race (perception). Please don't remove it. I took like over 2 hours adding these things and researching it to better the article. And it's pretty annoying that you are throwing my time and work to the trash.

The website of the guy who researched the census is not one single personal website. this guy has written for LA Latino, Houston Culture, etc. The guy who researched it is not some random blogger, the document he researched is not false, and the his website is not a blog.

If you want to add something to the 1921 census mentioned in the states of Mexico, like "This was the last census to record race" or "Since then, the demographics have changed" then do so. But please don't just remove the stuff I put because I put time and effort into it.

So, please leave the census info there, and then, like I said, make it known that current demographics may have dramatically changed, but I think it is a good reference. And besides, it's an official government stat, it's not like Schmal is making the info up.

Have a nice day.--76.95.196.87 (talk) 23:28, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Can you at least (for the sake that I put out of my own time and effort) put the 1921 stats for each state in the "History" section? (And mention that since then, the population ethnic demographics may have changed dramatically). --76.95.196.87 (talk) 00:54, 7 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No, it would require that a good secondary source discusses the sentence and suggests that it is of particular relevance for understanding the demographic development of the states. As it is the information is poorly source and it is not at all obvious why it would be relevant for readers to know how many people described themselves as "indigena pura" or "blanco" or "indigena mezclado" in 1921.·ʍaunus·snunɐw· 01:04, 7 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

User seeks advice on Spanish health content

[edit]

I thought you may have input into this - User_talk:Jmh649#Gota. A user feels that his Spanish content is not getting fair consideration and does not know how to get another opinion from the Spanish Wikipedia community. This user is adapting translations from the WP:TTF, which are medical articles translated from English by Translators without Borders. Thanks for any attention or referral you can give to address this. Blue Rasberry (talk) 17:55, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Request for input in drafting potential guidelines

[edit]

Hi. There are, at present, no particular clear guidelines for religious material here, or, for that matter, guidelines for how to deal with ideas in general, particularly those ideas which might be accepted as true by individuals of a given religious, political, or scientific stance. There have been attempts in the past to draft such guidelines, but they have quickly been derailed. I am dropping this note on the talk pages of a number of editors who I believe have some interest in these topics, or have shown some ability and interest in helping to develop broad topic areas, such as yourself, and asking them to review the material at User:John Carter/Guidelines discussion and perhaps take part in an effort to decide what should be covered in such guidelines, should they be determined useful, and what phrasing should be used. I also raise a few questions about broader possible changes in some things here, which you might have some more clear interest in. I would be honored to have your input.
