need some help

Hi @Rosiestep:. you said I could ping you to discuss ways to get the resources at WikiProject Council moving again. I really need your help and input. My efforts are in jeopardy of being reversed or diverted if I don't get some supportive input. could you please let me know if you are available to do so? I really appreciate it. please ping me when you reply. thanks. --Sm8900 (talk) 03:17, 15 January 2020 (UTC)

Hi Sm8900, and thanks for stopping by. Seems like there might be a bit of confusion. I thought you were seeking points of contact for WikiProject Women in Red, and that's why Victuallers' name and mine -we're the cofounders- were mentioned to you on the Women in Red talkpage. In that regard, I would be glad to chat with you, e.g. our activities, metrics, and so forth. Note, I'm currently on international wiki travel, so if your inquiry is urgent, my pagestalkers might be able to assist if you leave a detailed message. Best, --Rosiestep (talk) 04:06, 15 January 2020 (UTC)
hi Rosiestep. thanks for your reply! well, yes, that is absolutely correct. the thing is, my reason for requesting that data was in order to list you at the page for WikiProject Council. did you get a notification when I listed you there? I hope that you did. either way, would it be possible for you to tell me whether that has your agreement? if so, I may need your input. I appreciate your help. thanks. --Sm8900 (talk) 04:09, 15 January 2020 (UTC)
Hi Sm8900. No, I didn't get pinged. Would you please provide a diff link? Thank you. --Rosiestep (talk) 04:57, 15 January 2020 (UTC)

sure, no problem. here is a link below to the version of the page that shows my edits; this includes the listing of your name, and other coordinators for your wikiproject. Write back here, to let me know what you think of this. If you agree with this, then I could use your input, but first I'd like to give you a chance to look over these edits, since you may not have seen them before if you weren't pinged. thanks!!!

thanks!! --Sm8900 (talk) 05:03, 15 January 2020 (UTC)

Sm8900 Thanks for the link. The info seems fine. --Rosiestep (talk) 05:11, 15 January 2020 (UTC)
thanks, that's really good to know. so then, in that case, could you please go to this talk page section, and express your support for including that information on the page? I added it and everything was fine, but now one editor reverted everything on their own, so I need some input. I really appreciate your help there. thanks.
Link to talk page section: WikiProject_Council#Discussion re recent article edits.
thanks. --Sm8900 (talk) 05:28, 15 January 2020 (UTC)
Sm8900, I just reviewed that section and I lack a clear understanding of what edits are under discussion. Also, don't have time/inclination to delve more deeply. As I've mentioned previously, I'm available to chat about Women in Red. --Rosiestep (talk) 05:41, 15 January 2020 (UTC)
ok, no problem. I understand. thanks!! --Sm8900 (talk) 05:42, 15 January 2020 (UTC)
I also looked at the discussion which seemed pointed but open to debate. I wasn't sure (like Rosie) of the ambition for the project, it seemed that the discussion would in time be constructive. Good luck. Victuallers (talk) 09:09, 15 January 2020 (UTC)
  • Sm8900: I also feel there is some confusion about what exactly you are trying to achieve on WP:Council. Given the high number of page views to its main page, it seems to me to be a useful starting point for those who are interested in examining background on wikiprojects, possibly with a view to creating new ones or improving those which already exist. May I suggest you outline on the WP Council talk page what you consider to be the project's shortcomings and how you think they could be overcome. I too welcome your enthusiasm to make WP:Council more effective and appreciate the progress you have been making with WP History.--Ipigott (talk) 11:20, 15 January 2020 (UTC)
    • Ipigott thanks for your note above. I appreciate your statement of support. as you know, I have just created the new WikiProject to act upon your stated request above, i.e. "to make WP:Council more effective." The new project is at: Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Empowerment.
now with User:Rosiestep's epic achievement yesterday, time is of the essence. It is even more essential that we move forward with this, post-haste and forthwith. If I may, can i please ask that you go over and check out Wikipedia: WikiProject Editor Empowerment? then please come back here, and let me know any and every way that it does or does not meet the idea that you mentioned above. and then hopefully perhaps we can get moved ahead on this. i want to really move ahead with this idea, and the input of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in red is exactly the viewpoint that we need to have on board.
Could you please take a look, and let me know any and all of your thoughts on this, please? I really appreciate it. thanks!! --Sm8900 (talk) 19:07, 24 January 2020 (UTC)

Precious anniversary

Precious
Eight years!

... and today, thank you! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:55, 21 January 2020 (UTC)

Oh, @Gerda, what a happy memory this is, being the first editor ever to receive the Precious Award. Thank you, again, for the original honor, and for the reminder with this post today. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:40, 21 January 2020 (UTC)
Thank you, it's a special pleasure for me as well. To my delight, the date coincides with featuring a woman on DYK who made the impossible possible, - a good reminder to us all that this IS possible. I decorated my talk on the occasion. I met her when the miracle happened, and she was all gentle, kind and happy. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:45, 21 January 2020 (UTC)
Gerda Arendt, these sorts of coincidences are lovely, as is the fact that you actually met Jutta Hering-Winckler. In the meantime, I've updated her talkpage. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:57, 21 January 2020 (UTC)
ps: I uploaded cat pics from a recent vacation, such as this, - feel free to make the description more precise, - I don't know such things in English. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:51, 21 January 2020 (UTC)
So cute! Will you be uploading "La Fajana, La Palma, Three cats on chair" (and any others?) to Commons? If yes, I'd be pleased to have them "keep an eye on things around here". --Rosiestep (talk) 16:57, 21 January 2020 (UTC)
They are on commons, also two others who stare even more: one + three black. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:05, 21 January 2020 (UTC)
@Gerda, found them and now, the three on chair are "keeping an eye on things around here"; in the future, the others. :) --Rosiestep (talk) 17:39, 21 January 2020 (UTC)
Lovely. Under there watchful eyes, the page will be free from misunderstandings ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:35, 21 January 2020 (UTC)

Only 100 or so words. It should be fun and serious at the same time.

All the best,

The community has determined you were the creator of the 6 millionth article, with the article Maria Elise Turner Lauder. Congratulations, and thank you for your work here! Coffee // have a ☕️ // beans // 21:27, 23 January 2020 (UTC)

Maria Elise Turner Lauder
Coffee, Oh my gosh, I've got goosebumps! Thank you for the honor and for the opportunity to spotlight a woman writer. I really appreciate it. --Rosiestep (talk) 21:34, 23 January 2020 (UTC)

Perfect!!! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:16, 23 January 2020 (UTC)

ps: For another coincidence: I just uploaded an image to match, File:Rose Window, Neviges.jpg, - the creator of that beauty celebrates his 100th birthday today, alive! - Heard it/him on radio, rememered the pic, and expanded the article about his master piece five times, - sooo proud I managed! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:22, 23 January 2020 (UTC)

As someone else whose article was close to 6M, this couldn't have happened to someone more deserving. +1 to everyone else's congratulations! And what a sweet payoff for all the work you've done for Women in Red and Women in Green! Daniel Case (talk) 22:19, 23 January 2020 (UTC)

I predict in another five years (or less) Women in Red will be able to firmly be known as Women in Blue because of the hard work done by Rosie and others! Coffee // have a ☕️ // beans // 22:26, 23 January 2020 (UTC)
Congratulations Rosie! So happy that this milestone was reached with an article about a woman. SusunW (talk) 22:32, 23 January 2020 (UTC)

  • Since we live in a novel, according to Robert Anton Wilson, having you write the 6th millionth English Wikipedia article with the subject being a woman writer allows for applause and cheers of "Author! Author!" in four different directions. Congrats, thanks for adding to the fun and, more seriously, for your continuing contributions to world knowledge and encyclopedic honoring of women throughout society and history. • How terrific!! congrats!! --Sm8900 (talk) 01:35, 26 January 2020 (UTC)
  • Belated congrats, Rosie! I was really, really intent on getting the 6 millionth article myself and built up an enormous queue of articles in userspace in the hopes that I'd get lucky. But I seriously misjudged how fast new articles would be uploaded and pulled an all-nighter, expecting a frenzy in the middle of the night. Finally ran out of steam mid-morning (ain't exactly a spring chicken anymore!) and laid down for a 1-hour nap with a little less than 200 to go. When I woke up they were at 6,000,018. Man, was I was pissed that I'd slept through any chance of getting it, but I just couldn't keep my eyes open any longer! Curses, foiled again! I'll get you yet! Just wait for the 7 millionth article!--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 00:49, 14 February 2020 (UTC)
  • Me, too, Sturmvogel 66; I'm no spring chicken anymore, but the good news is that I don't intend to vie for the 7 millionth article so maybe that one will be yours. ;) Anyway, thanks for the congrats; appreciate it. BTW, in case you're looking for something to do, a bunch of the regulars, including me, will be here and here next weekend. Should be fun so come if you can. --Rosiestep (talk) 14:25, 14 February 2020 (UTC)

For your work for creating the 6th millionth article, here's towards a potential FA à la Persoonia Terminalis. Jerry (talk) 22:44, 23 January 2020 (UTC)

Congrats! It 's a pretty good article

Rosie!

Is this a good picture?

This is just wonderful. I've been wondering who the 6,000,000th author will be for a few months now. If you don't mind, The Signpost will give you a paragraph or 3 in News and notes, and maybe even a photo if it fits in well. If you like another photo better let me know. If you want to write a short paragraph for N&N that's ok too. Let me give you a question to work from: How does it feel to have written en-Wiki's 6,000,000th article?

Now if you look about 3 sections up, I'd previously sent you an invitation to suggest a "Most important article out of the last 1,000,000". Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Next issue/Community view You are still invited to do that and if you want to include Maria Elise Turner Lauder that's ok too - "most important" here is meant to be completely subjective. Any other article would be fine as well.

If you read my draft intro to the Community view article, you may have noticed that I wrote about the METL article "but please recognize that this is not the most important new article since then." I obviously left out the word "necessarily" from the draft. I'd guess somebody else is likely to nominate it as "most important", but if you were to self-nominate it later, I'd replace any earlier nomination.

Did I say "congratulations Rosie!" Way to go! Smallbones(smalltalk) 23:27, 23 January 2020 (UTC)

I'm running way behind on this month's Signpost. Saturday afternoon would be fine. Smallbones(smalltalk) 00:03, 24 January 2020 (UTC)

Congratulations from Italy

Congratulations on your 6 millionth article. I think it's important that this article about a woman was written by a woman. I read that less than 20% of all the biographies on wikipedia concern women and this is not a good thing. Lost ground must be recovered, and an old world man says so. Congratulations again for the article and for all your work with Women in Red. Greetings from Italy.Mario1952 (talk) 09:53, 24 January 2020 (UTC)

Thanks, Mario1952. I really appreciate it. --Rosiestep (talk) 13:42, 24 January 2020 (UTC)
hi Mario 1952. well said!! although actually it is not her 6,000,000th article. It is Wikipedia's 6,000,000th article. but Wikipedia is thereby immeasurably enriched, if this seemingly-random achievement fell upon an editor whose work truly exemplifies some impactful work and effort, for this project. congrats!! cheers!! --Sm8900 (talk) 15:27, 24 January 2020 (UTC)

Hi Rosiestep, congratulations. Would you be willing to translate "What's making you happy this week?" into Serbian for inclusion in Wikimedia-l and The Signpost? Thanks, ↠Pine () 21:14, 25 January 2020 (UTC)

Amazon vouchers/book prizes are planned for most articles destubbed from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland and Northern Ireland and whoever destubs articles from the most counties out of the 134. Sign up on page if interested in participating, hope this will prove to be good fun and productive, we have over 44,000 stubs! If we can get an extra prize for whoever improves the most British and Irish women bios and perhaps allow creations for that we can kill two birds with on stone ;-)♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:39, 2 February 2020 (UTC)

Missing the giver, though, who noticed about two years before me ;) - I helped bringing Peter Serkin to the Main page, - yet another kind of missing. - How many cats watch this place? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:52, 3 February 2020 (UTC)
The Cats' Convention
Gerda Arendt Yes, there are many who are missing, in the various ways that can happen. But if we keep writing about some of them (example, Toofie Lauder), they won't disappear. As for the cats: countless. I've thought about creating a subpage with all the cats and when they appeared on my talkpage, but seems like a lot of work; maybe they should organize and do it themselves. Not impossible. According to Eunice Allyn, cats held a convention back in 1909. So they are quite capable. --Rosiestep (talk) 17:20, 3 February 2020 (UTC)
These well-organizes cats should be able to make the list ;) - I know what you mean, 34 days into this year, I still didn't make a list of the psalms and our progress (or lack thereof). But at least the list of Recent deaths got done. DYK that someone nice (and now also missed) created Die Fliege (the fly), which is a lively and unobtrusive way of remembering. You'll find it on my talk, and to add someone dear, just click on it. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:24, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

Did you know ... that Elke Heidenreich,
two-time winner of the Grimme television award,
wrote the book Nero Corleone
featuring a tomcat
as the bullying protagonist?

I brought a cat to the Main page, on creator's birthday ;) - a late Valentine --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:21, 15 February 2020 (UTC)

Congrats, @Gerda. Quite nice that you did so. I didn't know of Elke previously but was happy to read about her now; very notable, indeed. In honor of bringing a cat to the Main page, I thought it would be fitting for a contemporary of the tom to make his way to my talkpage. So le voilà! That said, he better be on his best behavior as no bullying allowed here. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:38, 15 February 2020 (UTC)
She appeared, introducing a new book, and impressed me by saying - asked by someone I know what she was most proud of - that it was having good relationships with all the men who were her partners, and good relationships among those. Don't miss the little video (no need to understand the German), and the best pics are in the NZZ interview, with the pianist. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:45, 15 February 2020 (UTC)

Idea for new community workspace

Hi. I would like to create some kind of collaborative workspace where coordinators or members of various WikiProjects would gather and provide updates and information on what is going on at each wikiproject, i.e. regarding their latest efforts, projects, and where interested editors can get involved.

You are a coordinator at one of the most active WikiProkjects, so I wanted to get your brief input on whether you'd be interested in helping me to make this happen. I see a few possible options for making this happen, so I would like to get your input and feedback on this. which of the options below would you prefer? also, please reply to the brief questions below.

Please feel free to let me know what you think of this idea, and please let me know your preference, regarding the options above. if you do not see any need for this idea, that is totally fine. However, I think that the majority of editors lack awareness of where the truly active editing is taking place and at which WikiProjects, and I would like to do whatever I can to help make people more aware of where the activity is, what they can do to help, and also which areas of Wikipedia offer ideas and efforts that might help them in their own editing activities. Please feel free to let me know. --Sm8900 (talk) 05:07, 9 February 2020 (UTC)

hi. this idea is now receiving a full and active discussion! you can participate at: Wikipedia: Village_pump_(proposals)#Idea_for_new_community_workspace. thanks!! --Sm8900 (talk) 16:18, 9 February 2020 (UTC)

Hello Sir

I Want To Become An Editor On Wikipedia Or I Want To Become Wikipedian. But Whenever I Make Any Article Or Something Else That Is Removing By Someone Else What Can I Do? Mhndynamic (talk) 09:03, 11 February 2020 (UTC)

Hello Mhndynamic. Thanks for becoming a Wikipedia editor. There are notes on your talkpage which provide information regarding some of your edits. If you have questions about those notes, you might want to ask the editors who wrote them, e.g. regarding social media links in the External Links sections of articles, etc. But don't become discouraged. We were all new once. Learn how to edit Wikipedia by improving existing articles. Eventually, you'll feel more comfortable around here, and that would be the time to consider creating a new article. Happy editing. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:30, 11 February 2020 (UTC)

Since you created this article, I wanted to make sure you are aware of the nom. I also have recently added a gallery for the article which I’m sure you will appreciate. I discovered there is a stained glass window in the UVA Chapel dedicated to her (she was instrumental in the creation of the chapel.) I contacted the university and they had one of their photogs go to the chapel and take pics of the window for me! Magnificent. Enjoy, and thank you again for creating this. Hoppyh (talk) 21:16, 12 February 2020 (UTC)

Thank you for notifying me, Hoppyh. All your efforts, plus the photos, have really improved the article. Best wishes with the GA Nom. --Rosiestep (talk) 21:43, 12 February 2020 (UTC)

Relying on computer translation?

Hello Rosiestep, about two months ago you created the article Wil Velders-Vlasblom and in the edit summary you mentioned "translated from nl:Wil Velders-Vlasblom" (see [1]). At that moment the Dutch article had the sentence "Ze werd geboren als dochter van een koperslager en is opgegroeid in Rotterdam." According to Google Translate that means "She was born as the daughter of a butcher and grew up in Rotterdam." When you created that article you wrote "Her father was a butcher. She grew up in Rotterdam." That matches the output of Google Translate but it is incorrect. The word 'slager' can be translated into 'butcher' but a 'koperslager' is somebody who is processing metal like sheets of copper or brass and so. That is not the job of a butcher. Some 20 minutes later you did this edit changing "Her father was a butcher." into "Her father was a butcher at a shipyard." That looks weird and that information is still in that article! I will replace butcher by coppersmith. On your user page I see you mentioned your language skills for English as native level and Spanish, French and Serbian as intermediate level, but nothing about Dutch. So my guess is, you completely relied upon a computer translation for the sentence "Her father was a butcher." If so, I think it is better you stop using Dutch sources (including nl-wiki articles) for writing articles on the English Wikipedia. - Robotje (talk) 10:05, 27 February 2020 (UTC)

Oh my, Robotje, I am sorry for my bad translation; and thank you for your feedback, recommendations, and for improving the article. I won't do so again without requesting assistance first from my colleague, Drmies. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:53, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
Robotje, that is a funny and sad thing. Yes, a koperslager is not like a slager at all--Rosiestep, fun fact, a koperslager is someone who beats copper into shape: "slaan" (modern Dutch "to beat") has an etymology derived from "slagen" (it's along the lines, I bet, of the loss of the voiced velar fricative during and after the Middle English period). "Slager" as "butcher" (also in for instance in "kippenslager", "slaughterer of chickens") is related to "slachten", the verb for "to slaughter". Isn't it fun to know both English and Dutch? You know you can always call on me, Rosiestep, but not on Facebook since I'm blocked for a few more days (apparently "filthy troll" violates community standards). Robotje, thank you for pointing this out, but by the same token I am very grateful to Rosiestep for greatly expanding the number of articles on women for Wikipedia, including women not usually written up in English. That a minor mistake crept in, da's niet zo erg. Thank you, Drmies (talk) 17:03, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
Rosiestep, Rooie Vrouwen in de PvdA is for you. Another link turned blue--and a couple more red links added. Liesbeth den Uyl really should not be red... Haha that's funny because she was "red". OK, I'll stop. Drmies (talk) 17:28, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
OK since you insists, I jotted down Liesbeth den Uyl. Maybe you can fix up that infobox--I gotta get to work (Chaucer). Drmies (talk) 17:50, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
Hello Drmies, I am sure she is doing a lot of good work. So thank you Rosiestep for the articles you created or edited based on sources you can understand without using computer translations. I just noticed that she created pages like
  • Barbara Tudek (translated from Polish Wikipedia article with reference to sources in Polish language),
  • Rauha S. Virtanen (translated from Finnish Wikipedia article with reference to sources in Finnish language),
  • Gerd Fleischer (translated from Norwegian Wikipedia article with reference to sources in Norwegian language) and
  • Kirsti Ilvessalo (translated from Swedish Wikipedia article with reference to a source in Finnish language).
In my opinion it is irresponsible to completely rely on an automatic translation of a source to write an article on Wikipedia. When I hear people talking or see people writing things like "It is true, because I checked it in Wikipedia" that worries me. It is nice many readers of Wikipedia have a tremendous trust in the articles. It will be hard to justify that, but at least we wikipedians should really try to do our best. When you understand English, Spanish, French and Serbian but are translating articles from the Dutch, Polish, Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish and German Wikipedia and claim to have used source(s) in most of those languages, but in fact (if I am correct) complete rely on computer translations, then you just accept mistranslations will cause incorrect information in the Wikipedia articles. It is nice you want to help her with articles translated from the Dutch Wikipedia, but the issues is bigger than that. - Robotje (talk) 17:44, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
I am grateful to you for this edit, for instance, but the last thing that I really want to hear here is that Rosiestep is somehow being "irresponsible". This article writing is hard work, a lot harder than adding images, infoboxes, or links to Commons. And we do do our best: that I screwed up and had Van Tuynen as mayor in the wrong province is bad, but I hope you won't say "well you screwed that up, it's better if you hadn't written up the article in the first place because our readers might not trust us anymore". That completely defeats the purpose. Besides, coming from the Dutch wiki, as you do, where as you know "sourcing with reliable references" is a completely unknown concept, you might consider giving Rosiestep a medal for doubling the number of references on Wil Velders-Vlasblom. But that's enough out of me. Drmies (talk) 17:57, 27 February 2020 (UTC)

Internet Archive author

Hi,

We had a discussion earlier about your use of this template (search on "Internet Archive"):

https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/User_talk:Rosiestep/Archive_54#Template:Internet_Archive_author

I see you asked me a question in the previous thread and I never saw it. I actually have programs and scripts that can add this template in a semi-automated manner, though I have not run them in a long time as it is a lot of work to run. But adding live links that contain no content is not appropriate, it may never have content. If you want to monitor it, set up the templates in userspace and occasionally run down the list of links and check for changes. It may be convenient for you to add links with the supposition they might one day contain content, meanwhile wasting countless readers time chasing after empty content and giving Internet Archive a bad impression as a site that is not reliable for providing useful content. -- GreenC 15:58, 2 March 2020 (UTC)

  • Hi GreenC, I'm consulting with an Internet Archive consultant regarding this issue. I'll fill you in once I know more. In the meantime, thanks for reviewing the biographies I'm creating on pre-20th-century women writers. --Rosiestep (talk) 18:02, 2 March 2020 (UTC)
I am employed by IA and work directly with the head person there. With that said I am confident the Wikipedia community would not want search links that bring up bad/no results, there are guidelines against linking to search results. We must do it in this case as it is the only way to link IA content (by author name), but it must be done in a careful way. That is the reason this template exists, to narrow the search results to as few false positives as possible. -- GreenC 18:18, 2 March 2020 (UTC)
Okay; I get it. I'll remove it from the article I created last night, Rosa Miller Avery. It will leave me wondering if IA ever does digitize her works, be it under her real name, the pen name we know of ("Sue Smith"), and or the men's pseudonyms she used "in order to command attention", which are currently unknown. --Rosiestep (talk) 18:41, 2 March 2020 (UTC)
Thank you! And understand the problem! I did write software that goes through biography articles (input is Category:Births in XXXX) and checks the article for multiple names (based on the bold link names in the lead section), searches IA for results, displays results to the bot operator who makes a decision which one(s) should be included, then automatically adds it to the article. But it is complex to run and I have no done it in a while due to other jobs. -- GreenC 19:03, 2 March 2020 (UTC)

Covid-19

Hey, stranger. I've gotten involved in the whole Covid-19/Coronavirus mess. There is a lot going on, and articles on Wikipedia are being created and edited very fast. I was curious if you had been monitoring any of it. Alaska had its first case detected yesterday (It was not I!) I got to see an example of panic buying today @ Juneau's Costco. I will probably remain involved in this issue on Wikipedia for a while. I am well, and I hope you are, too!Juneau Mike (talk) 06:39, 14 March 2020 (UTC)

Hello @my friend, I am well and glad you are, too. I became the Chair of AffCom last month, so I have a lot of responsibilities in that regard (there are 155 Affiliates now!). The most important one at the moment, in my opinion, is to develop new ways of supporting events/conferences in the COVID-19 era. As you may be aware, all offline (in-person) wiki events funded by a WMF grant must switch to (a) online, or (b) be postponed, or (c) be canceled -- no exceptions -- until the WHO has declared that the pandemic is over. This applies to all Affiliates and other grantees, everywhere. We're testing platforms, discussing options (mostly on Telegram), etc. As for the COVID-19 Wikipedia articles, I haven't touched them, but glad to know you are involved. Any editing I'm doing is mostly to further by Wikidata project, Women Writers in Review (which supportes my Visiting Scholar position at Northeastern Univ). As for Costco, we're seeing the same issue here. Stay well, and please do stay in touch. --Rosiestep (talk) 00:25, 15 March 2020 (UTC)

Short descriptions

Sorry to have involved you in discussions on these, Rosie. As you seem to be closely connected to developments in Wikidata, I thought you may have been involved in earlier discussions on these but now see you had little past experience. Nevertheless as a number of editors seem to be making a real effort to include them on all mainspace articles, it is perhaps worthwhile discussing the matter. I see, for example, that while you have not been including short descriptions in your new articles, you have been completing details on Wikidata, including the equivalent of the short description for each biography. As for me, I have been going back over my articles in batches, adding short descriptions where appropriate. I am however now rather doubtful about the usefulness of these. If descriptions already appear on Wikidata, is it really worthwhile adding them to articles? And if they are considered important to articles (e.g. for mobile users), why can't the Wikidata descriptions be automatically copied over to articles? I think it would be useful to develop some guidelines, especially for all our active Women in Red contributors. Given your involvement in Wikidata, perhaps you could try to get some feedback from others involved with these developments.--Ipigott (talk) 08:54, 15 March 2020 (UTC)

Indeed, Ipigott, I have not been adding a {{Short description}} to the Wikipedia articles I've created. At the same time, I haven't deleted any short descriptions that I encounter on pages I've improved. IMO, Wikidata is the center of the wiki universe, and Wikidata item descriptions should flow into Wikipedia articles, just like a Wikidata item's triplets should flow into Wikipedia infoboxes. Some people share this view and others see it differently. Just as I avoided the talkpages regarding the Wikipedia/Wikidata infobox flow, I feel inclined to distance myself from the Wikipedia/Wikidata "short description" talkpages as the time and energy required to read everything and post thoughtful replies takes more time and energy than I wish to devote to such conversations. I'd be more inclined, though, to make a comment regarding this topic if the conversation occurred on the Women in Red talkpage but I wonder if such a conversation would be futile, e.g. if our members' opinions could actualize a change. I'd venture to say that many WiR participants are probably unaware of short descriptions in general, so for that reason, having such a conversation would have value. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:39, 15 March 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for sharing you views on this. Let's see if there are any reactions here over the next few days. If not, as you suggest, it may well be worthwhile bringing it up on WiR. I had hesitated to do so as there are already so many complexities to Wikipedia articles that I didn't want to add one more complication. Those who keep a watch on the articles they create must nevertheless have noticed how other editors add short descriptions, sometimes within minutes of an article's creation. I sometimes wonder how they feel so confident in doing so when an article is still under development. I certainly share your view that it would be logical for Wikidata item descriptions to flow into Wikipedia articles but to the best of my knowledge there have been no steps in this direction.--Ipigott (talk) 15:58, 15 March 2020 (UTC)

Articles

Hi, I moved your articles to the bottom of the list, give Susun the first one on Leap Year day haha!! Thanks so much.♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:52, 20 March 2020 (UTC)

Dr. Blofeld, okay, no worries. BTW, thanks for what you're doing with this contest. I don't know how you're able to stay so focused. It's getting harder and harder for me to do so. Stay safe. --Rosiestep (talk) 22:23, 20 March 2020 (UTC)
Tough times. My parents are currently on a cruise in the Caribbean. Usually my dad emails me when they get on the ship but not heard from them in 6 days. Hope they're not quarantined or something. My secret honestly is exercise. I can't sit for an hour or more anymore without some exercise! I do a set of 25 pressups, or stretches, go for a little walk etc. Even if it's just 5 minutes. If you look at my editing times sometimes it looks like I'm on here a long time but it's the regular breaks I have which maintains focus! I've also managed to stick to learning new words with multiple languages every day for over a month, so something is working well! Doing a little exercise every hour works wonders for concentration!♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:37, 20 March 2020 (UTC)
Ugh, Dr. Blofeld; I hope you hear from your parents soon! Getting away from the computer on a regular basis is important. I have a tendency to head to the kitchen to get a cup of coffee as my "break" but walking outside for 5 minutes would be better. Time to try it out. --Rosiestep (talk) 23:03, 20 March 2020 (UTC)
My head has been buried in Patsy Mink all day, but good to see you are both okay. We're in great shape here, though we are on voluntary quarantine. Plenty of fresh fruit and veggies in the garden to keep us for weeks. Sorry to hear about your parents, Doc. Hope they are okay. I head to the kitchen for coffee too, Rosiestep but via the patio. After my first cup I drink all the rest of them throughout the day in the garden. Like Doc, can't sit at the computer all day. I read, I write, I go outside, rinse repeat. LOL Please stay safe both of you. SusunW (talk) 23:39, 20 March 2020 (UTC)
@SusunW and Dr. Blofeld: I'm spending more time outside in the sun, and it's helpful. My wiki work this month is very different than what I usually do. I've been working systematically on improving (almost) every woman physician biography... little things like headers, punct, minor c/e, adding authority control, updating talkpage ratings where appropriate, etc. It's become my wiki-way of dealing with the pandemic by working through Category:Women physicians by nationality. I've gone through all the biographies in the A countries except American; all the B countries except British; and all the C-F countries. Over the weekend, I decided to work on the British ones; have completed the 49 who are uncatagorized, plus NI and Wales; now working on the Scottish biographies. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:29, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
Me too Rosie, that's why I'm just sorting out the patrolling now! We've had great weather here last two days. Take it easy for a bit, you deserve it!♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:33, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
That is so needed, Rosie. So many articles, so little time. I've been hopping all over the place and in-between adding names to the gender studies scholars list for April. My way of globetrotting while in isolation. Doc have your parents surfaced? Lots of port closures here in the Caribbean, I hope they are not aimlessly wandering the seas. SusunW (talk) 15:37, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
Yes, turns out their cruise got cancelled so they caught a cruise home and landed at Southampton this morning. They said they still enjoyed the cruise across the Atlantic and were given special privilages because of the inconvenience. This is going to cost the world economy an astronomical amount!!♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:43, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
Indeed it will, but that old adage "better safe than sorry" comes to mind. We can recuperate economically, if we have the people to do it; whereas, losing the people would hamper that. So glad they are home safely Doc. Take care of yourself. SusunW (talk) 15:50, 23 March 2020 (UTC)

Last day or two I've been following the Coronavirus news closely and it's a big demotivator. Makes you feel depressed with the situation. The exponential growth in cases is alarming. When the Desutbathon began there were just 35 cases in the UK, by yesterday there were nearly 10,000. Best to try to largely ignore the news and stay safe. Stay positive!♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:49, 26 March 2020 (UTC)

Dr. Blofeld unfortunately, I think it is ignoring the news that has gotten us here. People haven't taken it seriously. I hope beyond hope that everyone realizes the seriousness of it now. Be thankful you live in a country that has adequate medical care. I am certainly glad to be in a place in Mexico with excellent service, but am worried about friends in the Caribbean, Africa, and the Pacific, where that isn't so much the case. Please stay safe. SusunW (talk) 14:52, 26 March 2020 (UTC)

Good point, yes, a lot of people haven't taken it seriously. My point was if you spend too much time watching the news reports on it it's not a positive thing for your mind! Take it seriously, stay safe and avoid dwelling on it too much I was trying to say.♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:18, 26 March 2020 (UTC)

Totally agree with that! SusunW (talk) 15:28, 26 March 2020 (UTC)
@Dr. Blofeld and SusunW: demotivator is a good word for it. I become a bit anxious every day. But being outside helps, and as it's springtime here, I encourage myself to be present in the moment. I don't want to avoid the news, but I'm no longer glued to it; I remember feeling the same way with 9/11. And, while I've cut back on new article creation, I've done a ton of work on article improvement -- go figure. Please stay safe. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:07, 26 March 2020 (UTC)

Doing some work and came across a few books by Janet Meisel. Small obituary there. Can you find enough for a starter article either of you? Or perhaps Megalibrarygirl can, more local for her.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:22, 28 March 2020 (UTC)

@Dr. Blofeld, SusunW, and Megalibrarygirl: I've been working on Maria Gobat all day long. She's not British, she's not a writer, so why? I found so much material about her, plus a photo, so I just went for it. --Rosiestep (talk) 23:11, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
Those are the articles that to me must be written. The sources present themselves as if it is a gift and you just feel compelled to accept. It's a lovely piece Rosie. SusunW (talk) 23:36, 28 March 2020 (UTC)

Yes, when you come across an article it's important to start it or at least make a note of it. I only came across Janet in compiling sources and thought she might be somebody worth starting. It should at least be pleaced in the missing articles.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:30, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

Dr. Blofeld, I created a Wikidata item for Janet Meisel here so she'll show up on redlists generated by Women in Red or anyone else. In the meantime, I created an article last night on another 19th-c woman writer, Sarah Lanman Smith, because there was so much info available; plus thank you to Gamaliel for a nice photo uploaded last year. --Rosiestep (talk) 17:05, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

Cool! Thankyou! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:12, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
